Investor Michael Burry, who gained fame from the movie The Big Short for his prescient call on the housing market collapse, has not shied away from his bearish view on AI and several prominent AI stocks. Among the stocks Burry is short on are Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR), and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA).
Let's look at why I'd buy Nvidia, hold Palantir, and sell Tesla.

Nvidia: The king of AI at a low valuation
Burry doesn't believe that hyperscalers (owners of large data centers) are getting strong returns on their investments, which will eventually lead them to cut back on their AI infrastructure spending. As the biggest winner from this spending, then, it should perhaps be no surprise that he is short Nvidia. The company's graphics processing units (GPUs) have been the main chips powering the AI boom, and if spending slows, so will its revenue growth.
However, there is no sign that this spending will slow. Hyperscalers have only been increasing capital expenditures (capex), with Alphabet recently increasing its 2026 forecast and saying it will spend significantly more in 2027. At the same time, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing is upping its own spending to build new fabs to keep up with chip demand. A conservative company like TSMC doesn't make this decision lightly, as empty and underutilized fabs are a huge blow to a foundry.
With AI data center spending set to continue booming, Nvidia's stock looks like a buy, trading at a very attractive valuation of just above 15 times fiscal 2028 (ending January 2028) analyst earnings estimates.
Palantir: A high valuation but huge opportunity
With its stock trading at a forward price-to-sales (P/S) multiple of nearly 39.5 and a forward P/E of 86, it's easy to see why Burry would be short Palantir. However, this is a company that has been growing rapidly and could become one of the largest in the world over the next decade. As such, it is a stock that I'd hold and would look to buy on any significant pullback.
Palantir has arguably become one of the most important AI stocks, as its AIP platform helps make AI more useful in real-world settings. It does this by gathering data across an organization and organizing it into an ontology that it links to processes, concepts, and physical objects. The result is an AI application layer that helps reduce AI hallucinations and allows organizations to use or swap in and out any large language model (LLM) they want.
The company has seen tremendous, accelerating revenue growth, and existing clients continue to invest more in its solutions, as evidenced by its astounding 150% net dollar retention rate. Palantir has a long runway of growth still ahead, and it is not a stock I'd bet against, even with its hefty valuation.
Tesla: A high valuation with challenges ahead
With a high valuation (172 forward P/E multiple) and a struggling business, one stock I agree with Burry that is a sell is Tesla. The loss of lucrative, pure-gross margin regulatory credits from a change in U.S. emissions policies is a huge blow to the company's profitability. Meanwhile, Tesla saw auto sales slump last year after CEO Elon Musk alienated many potential buyers by getting involved in politics.
Tesla is betting heavily on robotaxis and robots to fuel future growth, but both businesses have challenges. Its robotaxi business has struggled with safety issues and expanding, while rival Waymo races across the country. Meanwhile, its robotics business faces the challenge of creating entirely new parts and developing a new supply chain while overcoming technical hurdles.
Tesla has long been a way to invest in Elon Musk's vision of the future, but with his other company, Space Exploration Technologies, also now public, the two stocks are competing with each other for investors' attention, and this has been hurting both stocks. I'd stay away.

Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR) has minted many millionaires during the past three years. The artificial intelligence (AI) software company hovered near penny-stock territory in 2023 and is currently valued at about $125 per share. It used to trade for more than $200 per share at its all-time high, showing how much the stock has gained in recent years.
However, some investors may be concerned that most of the gains are in the past. The millionaire-maker stocks of yesterday aren't always the millionaire-makers of today. Palantir has some compelling fundamentals that suggest it can flip the script, but there are some meaningful hurdles new investors face.

Fundamental growth has been impressive
Palantir operates a great business model that produces rising revenue and profit. Having the key metrics go up each quarter is the hallmark of stocks that steadily gain value over the long run. The first quarter featured 85% year-over-year revenue growth, with U.S. revenue more than doubling year over year.
That's an important detail because most of Palantir's revenue comes from the U.S. government and businesses. The fact that U.S. revenue growth is outpacing overall revenue growth means that a rising U.S. segment will lift up the entire business in a meaningful way.
Palantir locks in long-term contracts, which result in high annual recurring revenue. Its AI platform is critical for governments and enterprises that use artificial intelligence to analyze and interpret data. It also lets companies create AI agents to perform various tasks autonomously.
More than 200 of its Q1 deals exceeded $1 million in value, with 47 of those deals being worth more than $10 million. Investors are bullish about Q2 earnings, which will come out in August, with company forecasts suggesting a sequential revenue jump.
The valuation leaves little room for error
Even the bears will acknowledge that Palantir has a great business model, but at what price? This is the question that deflates some bullish narratives as the focus shifts from a rising business to a 138 price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio.
Net income more than quadrupled year over year in the first quarter, so it's possible that continued profit margin expansion could make the valuation more reasonable. Palantir wrapped up the quarter with a net profit margin just above 50%, and if the company can continue to maintain high top-line growth, its profit has more room to expand.
Full-year projections suggest that Palantir will maintain high revenue growth. A subscription model and strong customer relations with the largest governments and enterprises suggest that revenue growth can remain elevated beyond 2026. Still, the P/E ratio leaves little room for error.
Value investors may be concerned, but the recent dip has made the stock more attractive for growth investors who can wait a few years before selling their shares. It was only a few months ago when Palantir had a 600 P/E ratio, so a 138 P/E ratio looks more reasonable in comparison.
It's not turning $20,000 into $1 million
If you're looking for a stock that can make you a millionaire, two things matter beyond a stock's fundamentals: the stock's market cap and how much you can invest.
Some stocks can turn $20,000 into $1 million within a few years, but they are extremely rare. Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) achieved the feat last year before entering a correction, and while some stocks can do that in a few years, it is extremely rare. However, in most of those cases, it's a stock with a relatively small market cap that gets the job done.
If you can put only $20,000 into Palantir, it's not going to become a $1 million position. That would require a 50-fold return, and that performance would turn a $315 billion market cap into a $15.75 trillion market cap. Palantir isn't going to become more valuable than Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) combined, so investors shouldn't count on that kind of return.
Palantir, however, does have a realistic shot at a $1 trillion valuation, which would imply more than a threefold return. That may not be enough for most people to turn Palantir into a millionaire-maker position, but portfolio diversification and time can eventually move you toward the seven-figure milestone.

Is Palantir Still a Millionaire-Maker Stock?

Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR) has been on a steady downward slide since achieving an all-time high in October of last year. It recently dipped around 35% from its all-time high, which many investors may view as a buying opportunity.
After all, Palantir is one of the companies bound to benefit from the massive expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), and its soaring revenue backs up that sentiment.

Palantir is slated to report its second-quarter results on Aug. 3, and I think the stock could have a huge move after earnings. But the question is, will it be up or down?
Palantir must exceed expectations
Palantir has been involved in AI for longer than most companies. It started in the early 2000s as an AI-first business that used AI to make sense of data. Originally deployed as a government-only software, it eventually found usage on the commercial side of the market. Now, both sides are extremely important and have helped lead to some impressive growth figures in Q1.
In Q1, overall revenue rose 85% year over year. Palantir gave Q2 guidance for $1.797 billion to $1.801 billion, but the company has a consistent track record of exceeding internal expectations. Wall Street analysts still haven't caught on to this trend, and expect $1.81 billion in revenue, indicating about 81% growth. Palantir will likely grow in that 80% range this quarter, or even get up to 90%, but it may not be enough.
Despite the huge sell-off, Palantir's stock trades for a sky-high price tag.
For a company like Palantir, trading at a 40 times earnings multiple is fairly reasonable. That means Palantir must nearly quadruple its earnings from this point to achieve a reasonable valuation. I don't think that's an impossible task, but it could take several years.
If Palantir's revenue growth continues to accelerate past Q1's 85%, the stock could stay put or move slightly higher. However, if it falls below that level, as it's projected to do, the market may start to panic and dump shares. That's not a great scenario, and it puts Palantir up against the wall to continue producing impressive growth figures.
This could spell trouble for the stock, and I think there could be a big move down following Q2 earnings. Palantir as a company is impressive, but the stock is just too expensive to merit investing in right now.

Prediction: Palantir's Stock Will Make a Huge Move on Aug. 3

Oppenheimer and Baird both reiterated buy ratings on Palantir this week.
On Tuesday, a third analyst warned of weak commercial sales -- sparking a selloff.
Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) stock closed down 6.1% Tuesday after Cleveland Research hinted at weak commercial spending among the company's commercial partners, as StreetInsider.com reports.
But here's the thing: Not everyone agrees that Palantir is heading for disappointment. Over the past two days, two other analysts have come out in support of Palantir stock ahead of its Q2 earnings release on Aug. 3.

Oppenheimer loves Palantir
On Monday, Oppenheimer analyst Param Singh reiterated his "outperform" rating and $200 price target on Palantir. Revenue could grow 85% year over year, says Singh, beating consensus forecasts for 80% growth.
Singh disputes Cleveland's report, arguing that Palantir's Q2 commercial revenue growth will be 135% year over year, even faster than U.S. government sales, which should grow 80% or better -- primarily due to increased defense spending.
Baird loves Palantir, too
One day later, Baird analyst William Power likewise reiterated an outperform rating and $200 price target. Power agrees with Singh that both commercial and government revenue growth will be strong for Palantir. Even better, Power adds that Palantir is on track to generate potentially as much as $8 billion in positive free cash flow -- although for now, he's forecasting only a more conservative $6.7 billion.
What it means for investors
To put these numbers in context, Palantir generated just $2.1 billion in free cash flow last year. Most analysts think that number will double in 2026 (S&P Global Market Intelligence estimates $4.3 billion), then grow another 50% or so in 2027 ($6.4 billion).
On a $315 billion market capitalization, that's still a nearly 50x forward FCF valuation on the stock, which sounds like a lot. For a company growing FCF 100% one year, however, and 50% the next, it may actually be a fair price to pay for Palantir.

3 Powerful AI Stocks Poised for the Next Massive Shift

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday closed up +0.02%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.51%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.32%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +0.02%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) fell -0.33%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting a 1-week high and the Nasdaq 100 falling to a 2.5-month low. The weakness in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks on Monday weighed on the Nasdaq 100 and limited gains in the broader market. Investors rotated out of semiconductor and AI-infrastructure stocks on Monday and into beaten-down sectors, such as software.

Stocks initially jumped on Monday after the US and Iran held off on attacks for a third straight day, easing geopolitical risks, pushing crude oil prices sharply lower, and helping lift global stock and bond markets. On Sunday, Mike Waltz, US ambassador to the United Nations, said the US is giving diplomacy “some space.” The plunge in crude oil prices on Monday knocked the 10-year T-note yield down -4 bp to 4.64%.
Monday’s US economic news showed strength in the economy and is supportive of stocks after US Jun capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft, a proxy for capital spending, rose +0.9% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.7% m/m.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) plunged by more than -7% on Monday as tensions eased in the Middle East after the US held off against further airstrikes on Iran for a third straight day and Iran signaled it was refraining from any retaliation as it held negotiations with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz.
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf and President Trump raised the possibility of intensified action against Iran. Also, Houthi militants in Yemen claimed to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has effectively been shut off by the war. Jizan is home to a refinery and export terminal along the Red Sea.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are waiting for results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Amazon.com, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 135 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 38% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on Tue/Wed.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Monday. The Euro Stoxx 50 climbed to a 2.5-week high and closed up +0.02%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.15% on Friday. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +0.50%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Monday closed up +8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -3.6 bp to 4.641%. T-notes moved higher amid Monday’s -7% plunge in crude oil prices, which eased inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1-month low of 2.201% on Monday. Weak demand for the Treasury’s $70 billion auction of 5-year T-notes limited gains in T-notes as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.28, below the 10-auction average of 2.35 and the lowest in 3.75 years.
European government bond yields moved lower on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield fell -3.9 bp to 3.133%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -3.5 bp to 4.997%.
The German Jul IFO business confidence index rose +0.9 to a 5-month high of 86.6, stronger than expectations of 86.0.
ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir said "he remains of the view that the ECB will have to raise interest rates at least one more time" to ensure that inflation risks don't spin out of control.
The markets are discounting an 88% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks retreated on Monday, weighing on the broader market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell to a 1-week low and closed down more than -2%. Sandisk (SNDK) closed down more than -12% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed down more than -5%. Also, Western Digital (WDC), Lam Research (LRCX), and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed down more than -4%, and Micron Technology (MU), Applied Materials (AMAT), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -3%. In addition, Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed down more than -2%.
Energy producers and service providers moved lower on Monday amid the -7% decline in crude oil prices. Devon Energy (DVN), Diamondback Energy (FANG), and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) closed down more than -4%, and APA Corp (APA), ConocoPhillips (COP), and Haliburton (HAL) closed down more than -3%. Also, Chevron (CVX) closed down more than -2%, and ExxonMobil Holdings (XOM) and SLB Ltd (SLB) closed down more than -1%.
Software stocks rallied on Monday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +10%, and Workday (WDAY) closed up more than +9% to lead gainers in the S&P 500. Stocks Settle Mixed as AI Angst Offsets Easing Geopolitical Tensions

Stock indexes gave up early gains today and are trading mixed, with the Nasdaq 100 falling to a 2.5-month low. The weakness in chipmakers is weighing on the broader market as investors rotate out of semiconductor and AI-infrastructure stocks and into beaten-down sectors, such as software.

Stocks initially jumped today, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting a 1-week high after the US and Iran held off attacks on one another for a third straight day, easing geopolitical risks, pushing crude oil prices down sharply, and helping lift global stock and bond markets. On Sunday, Mike Waltz, US ambassador to the United Nations, said the US is giving diplomacy “some space.” The plunge in crude oil prices today has knocked the 10-year T-note yield down -3 bp to 4.65%.
Today’s US economic news shows strength in the economy and is supportive of stocks after US Jun capital goods new orders, nondefense ex-aircraft, rose +0.9% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.7% m/m.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) are down more than -6% today, as tensions eased in the Middle East after the US held off against further airstrikes on Iran for a third straight day and Iran signaled it was refraining from any retaliation as it held negotiations with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz.
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as President Trump has raised the possibility of intensified action against Iran. Also, Houthi militants in Yemen claimed to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has effectively been shut off by the war. Jizan is home to a refinery and export terminal along the Red Sea.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are waiting for results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Amazon.com, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 135 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 38% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on Tue/Wed.
Overseas stock markets are higher today. The Euro Stoxx 50 climbed to a 2.5-week high and is up +0.39%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.15% on Friday. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +0.50%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are up +5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -2.4 bp to 4.653%. T-notes are moving higher amid today’s -6% plunge in crude oil prices, which eases inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 3-week low of 2.221% today. Supply pressures are limiting the upside in T-notes as the Treasury will auction $183 billion of T-notes today and tomorrow, beginning with a $69 billion auction of 2-year T-notes and a $70 billion auction of 5-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield is down -4.6 bp to 3.126%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -4.9 bp to 4.983%.
The German Jul IFO business confidence index rose +0.9 to a 5-month high of 86.6, stronger than expectations of 86.0.
ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir said "he remains of the view that the ECB will have to raise interest rates at least one more time" to ensure that inflation risks don't spin out of control.
The markets are discounting an 89% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.

Stocks Rally as Middle East Tensions Ease

PAYC vs. PLTR: Which Stock Is the Better Value Option?

Palantir's valuation has centered on hype, which seems to be fading
At the beginning of the year, Palantir's stock traded at well over 250 times its trailing earnings. Investors didn't care about the valuation because it was doing so well; it was thriving due to AI demand, and expectations were that the growth would remain relentless. That excitement can enable a stock to trade far above what its earnings would typically justify.
The challenge, however, is that these days, there are newer, shinier growth stocks for investors to rally around, such as Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp, also known as SpaceX, which went public last month. The shortage of memory and storage products is also leading more growth investors to focus on tech stocks in those areas.
Palantir, despite its impressive growth and all the superlatives its CEO throws out, may simply not be as popular, exciting, or relevant to retail investors as it has been in recent years. And that may hurt the stock more than anything.
Unless Palantir completely smashes expectations, I expect the stock will trade lower
Palantir has typically beaten and raised expectations. But when its valuation is as high as it is, that effectively means beat-and-raise quarters are priced in. And if the raise is not significant, the stock may still fall afterward, as happened when Palantir reported earnings in May. Despite generating 85% revenue growth and raising its guidance, the performance wasn't enough to send its shares rallying.
Currently, Palantir's 52-week low is $106.37, and I believe it will hit that level in the days and weeks following its upcoming earnings report. Heading into the quarter, the bar is set high, and anything short of 85% revenue growth and a strong increase to the guidance is likely to send it reeling.
