NVIDIA Corporation provides graphics and compute and networking solutions in the United States, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and internationally. The Graphics segment offers GeForce GPUs for gaming and PCs, the GeForce NOW game streaming service and related infrastructure, and solutions for gaming platforms; Quadro/NVIDIA RTX GPUs for enterprise workstation graphics; virtual GPU or vGPU software for cloud-based visual and virtual computing; automotive platforms for infotainment systems; and Omniverse software for building and operating metaverse and 3D internet applications. The Compute & Networking segment comprises Data Center computing platforms and end-to-end networking platforms, including Quantum for InfiniBand and Spectrum for Ethernet; NVIDIA DRIVE automated-driving platform and automotive development agreements; Jetson robotics and other embedded platforms; NVIDIA AI Enterprise and other software; and DGX Cloud software and services. The company's products are used in gaming, professional visualization, data center, and automotive markets. It sells its products to original equipment manufacturers, original device manufacturers, system integrators and distributors, independent software vendors, cloud service providers, consumer internet companies, add-in board manufacturers, distributors, automotive manufacturers and tier-1 automotive suppliers, and other ecosystem participants. NVIDIA Corporation was incorporated in 1993 and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California.

NVIDIA remains a rare case where extremely high profitability is combined with very strong business growth, but the valuation already reflects a significant portion of these achievements. Revenue for the TTM reached $81.6 billion, and net income reached $58.3 billion, with both metrics having increased markedly compared with previous periods, confirming sustained scalable demand. The margins are impressive: gross margin at 74.15%, operating margin at 64.02%, and net margin at 62.97%, and the year-over-year trend is generally improving, which is a major positive for business quality. ROE of 111.66%, ROA of 83.11%, and ROI of 105.94% are at extremely high levels, so the company’s fundamental efficiency is significantly above the industry median. The balance sheet also looks very strong: debt/equity is just 0.04, current ratio is 3.44, quick ratio is 2.85, and cash on the balance sheet of $80.6 billion provides a high liquidity buffer. At the same time, long-term debt remains moderate, while growth in equity and assets supports financial stability. The weak point is the multiples: P/S of 19.05, P/B of 24.48, and P/FCF of 40.56 are substantially above industry medians, which means the market has high expectations and limits the potential for further valuation expansion. P/E of 30.26 no longer looks excessive in light of growth rates and earnings quality, but it still does not provide much margin of safety. The dividend yield of 0.11% has virtually no impact on the investment case and does not compensate for the high valuation. Recent trends show that the multiples have declined from higher levels, while profitability and revenue continued to grow, which partially justifies the sector premium. However, given the already very strong base forecast and the high historical volatility of semiconductor leader stocks, the adjustment should remain moderately negative. Overall, the fundamentals support a premium valuation, but not enough to raise the target price aggressively.

Construction equipment maker Caterpillar can deliver turnkey electricity-generating solutions at a meaningful scale right now.
Speaking to a Stanford University computer science class in May, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang raised eyebrows by saying, "The amount of energy that we need for [AI] computing is likely probably 1,000 times more than we currently have." He didn't add any additional detail to his mental math and even conceded, "I wouldn't be surprised if we're off by a couple orders of magnitude." If his goal was simply to provide some tangible perspective -- for effect -- on what the energy industry needs to accomplish in the foreseeable future, then mission accomplished.
The projected scope makes sense. Also in May, Goldman Sachs predicted that the power U.S. data centers alone would need would more than double between 2025 and 2027, from 31 gigawatts (GW) to 66 GW. At peak usage, this would push the domestic AI industry's consumption from just over 4% of the nation's total power output to well over 8%. Extending this trend, Bloom Energy predicts artificial intelligence could be using up to 12% of the United States' produced electricity by 2030, and it would still just be getting started.

The same dynamics are taking shape outside of the U.S. as well, of course.
It's an opportunity, to be sure, but only for companies already ready to capitalize on it. To this end, here's a closer look at three industrial names already seeing the upside of the surge in power demand.
1. GE Vernova
GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) is the former power-generation arm of industrial titan General Electric, which began splitting itself into smaller, more manageable pieces in 2021. This particular offshoot makes everything from wind turbines to nuclear reactors to hydropower systems to power grid solutions.Its red-hot equipment right now, however, is natural gas turbines.
Originally intended for utility companies, these power plants -- capable of producing anywhere from 34.5 megawatts to 571 megawatts of power -- are ideally suited to power data centers due to their scalability, ability to be throttled as needed, and relatively small footprint. Just as important, on-premises power generation means AI data center owners/operators don't need to wait for time-consuming (and often costly) connections to a power grid. That's why PwC believes the United States' data center-driven demand for natural gas could easily quintuple between last year and 2035, with an outside chance of further growth taking shape even sooner.
GE Vernova won't supply all the turbines linked to this surge in demand for natural gas. With a companywide backlog of $176 billion (nearly two-thirds of which is gas turbine-related) versus 2026's expected revenue of about $46 billion, however -- and a gas power equipment backlog that grew from 100 GW to 116 GW in Q2 alone - this company's certainly going to meet a huge chunk of this demand.
2. Vistra
Technically speaking, Vistra (NYSE: VST) isn't an industrial company. It's categorized as a power utility, though even by utility-stock standards, it's not exactly your typical power company. While it does directly provide electricity to about 5 million residential and business customers, Vistra's core business is generating and then selling electricity on a wholesale basis to other utility companies sharing the same grid.
The company's now making the most of this flexibility too. For instance, rather than merely connecting new artificial intelligence data centers to existing grid infrastructure and treating them like any other customer, Vistra is now entering long-term power purchase agreements directly with institutions. Early this year, the company announced it had inked long-term deals with Amazon and Facebook parent Meta Platforms to supply both tech companies with the electricity needed for existing and new AI data centers.
Such arrangements still account for only a relatively small part of the company's total business. In that these long-term agreements allow Vistra to make capital investments -- particularly in nuclear power -- with a reasonably assured return on the investment, the company can add power production capacity with the confidence that ultimately allows it to build more efficient infrastructure.
In other words, it's a win-win. That's why you shouldn't be surprised to see more such dealmaking in the future, particularly from Vistra, which has already shown its interest in custom-designed power provision solutions.
3. Caterpillar
Finally, add Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) -- yes, the construction equipment company -- to your list of stocks that will benefit from the AI industry's exploding demand for electricity. It's already benefiting, in fact.
You know it best as a maker of bulldozers, backhoes, and dump trucks. And that's still a huge part of its business to be sure. Largely overlooked, though, is that Caterpillar also manufactures high-capacity mobile diesel and gas generators, battery-based energy storage systems, and more, all of which are proving to be much-needed stopgap solutions while data center owners and operators are waiting on more permanent equipment. Outfits including Space Exploration Technologies and Microsoft (through Nscale) are utilizing off-grid generators to power some of their AI data centers.
To this end, while all of Caterpillar's business lines grew last year, its power generation arm, which provides these generators, experienced company-leading growth of roughly 30%. The company expects this business to double between 2025 and 2030, and S&P Global doesn't exactly disagree with this outlook. It's looking for Caterpillar's power and energy division to grow another 17% this year -- from last year's revenue of $33.4 billion -- en route to $54.8 billion in annual revenue by 2030.

Stock indexes are falling today, with the S&P 500 sliding to a 1-month low and the Nasdaq 100 sinking to a 3-month low. Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks are selling off today, leading the overall market lower. Also, heightened geopolitical risks are weighing on stocks as crude prices surged, and bond yields jumped when President Trump said the US will “hit Iran hard” after a recent attack from Iran that targeted a US base in Jordan.

The markets were little changed following the results of the 2-day FOMC meeting early this afternoon, with policymakers keeping interest rates unchanged in a 9-3 decision. Also, earnings results from Microsoft and Meta Platforms after today’s close will be looked at to see whether the vast spending behind the buildout of artificial intelligence can deliver adequate returns. The 10-year T-note yield is up +4 bp to 4.64%.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) jumped by more than +7% today as the recent lull in hostilities came to an abrupt end after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US airbase and command center in Jordan with ballistic missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have hit and halted three tankers attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launched a joint attack on "Iran-aligned terrorists" in Iraq after the IRGC directed them to target US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
Tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, diplomatic attempts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz appear to be at an impasse. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi said Oman's proposal for a route through the Strait of Hormuz, with 50% under Iran's control and 50% under Oman's, would not address Iran's concerns and that the inbound passage and part of the outbound channel must be entirely under Iran's control.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -6.4% in the week ended July 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -3.6% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -9.9%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +7 bp to an 11.5-month high of 6.76% from 6.69% the prior week.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms today, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 87% of the 216 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 34% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the conclusion of today’s FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.73%. China's Shanghai Composite rebounded from a 1-week low and closed up +0.40%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2.25-month low and closed down -1.49%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are down -9 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +3.0 bp to 4.637%. T-notes are under pressure today from a +7% surge in crude oil prices, which raises inflation expectations and is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, long liquidation and position evening are weighing on T-notes ahead of the FOMC’s interest rate decision later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +5.0 bp to 3.154%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +7.7 bp to 5.021%.
The German Jun import price index eased to 6.1% y/y from 6.8% y/y in May.
The markets are discounting an 88% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks are sharply lower today, weighing on the broader market. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index ($SOX) dropped to a 2.5-month low and is down more than -3%. Nebius Group NV (NBIS) is down more than -9% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and KLA Corp (KLAC) and Sandisk (SNDK) are down more than -7%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), and ARM Holdings (ARM) are down by more than -5%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is down more than -4%. In addition, Marvell Technology (MRVL), Lam Research (LRCX), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) are down more than -3%, and Nvidia (NVDA), Intel (INTC), and Texas Instruments (TXN) are down more than -2%.
Trucking and freight companies are under pressure today from soaring crude oil prices. ArcBest (ARCB) is down more than -7%, and Saia Inc (SAIA), FedEx Freight Holding (FDXF), JB Hunt Transport Services (JBHT), and CH Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) are down more than -2%. Also, Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL), Marten Transport Ltd (MRTN), Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings (KNX), and XPO Inc (XPO) are down more than -1%.
Airline stocks are sliding today with the surge in crude oil prices. Alaska Air Group (ALK) is down more than -3%, and Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are down more than -2%. Also, American Airlines Group (AAL) and United Airlines Holdings (UAL) are down more than -1%.
Energy producers and service providers are climbing today, with crude oil prices up by more than +7%. Diamondback Energy (FANG) is up more than +4%, and ConocoPhillips (COP), APA Corp (APA), Devon Energy (DVN), ExxonMobil Holdings (XOM), and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) are up more than +3%. Also, Baker Hughes (BKR) and Chevron (CVX) are up more than +2%, and Phillips 66 (PSX) and Valero Energy (VLO) are up more than +1%.
Lennox International (LII) is down more than -19% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.55 billion, weaker than the consensus of $1.56 billion.
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) is down more than -13% after reporting Q2 net sales of $3.27 billion, below the consensus of $3.39 billion.
Avis Budget Group (CAR) is down more than -11% after reporting Q2 EPS of 98 cents, well below the consensus of $1.91.
Masco Corp (MAS) is down more than -10% after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.99 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.08 billion.
Caterpillar (CAT) is down more than -6% to lead losers in the Dow Jones industrials after Baird downgraded the stock to neutral from outperform, citing a growing trend of state and local government actions targeting data centers, a key growth driver for the company.
Humana (HUM) is down more than -6% after it maintained its full-year profit outlook despite posting better-than-expected Q2 profit.
Garmin Ltd (GRMN) is up more than +17% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 revenue of $2.02 billion, above the consensus of $1.92 billion, and raising its full-year revenue estimate to $8.05 billion from a previous estimate of $7.90 billion, stronger than the consensus of $7.99 billion.
GE Healthcare (GEHC) is up more than +11% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.13, better than the consensus of $1.04.
Amphenol (APH) is up more than +6% after reporting Q2 net sales of $8.76 billion, better than the consensus of $8.31 billion.
Teradyne (TER) is up more than +5% after reporting Q2 net revenue of $1.33 billion, stronger than the consensus of $1.22 billion.
Ford Motor (F) is up more than +5% after raising its full-year adjusted EBIT to $10 billion to $11 billion from a previous forecast of $8.5 billion to $10.5 billion.

Stocks Tumble as Chipmakers Plunge, Oil Spikes

Chip stocks have been crashing over concerns that the infrastructure building boom for artificial intelligence (AI) is not sustainable.
However, when some of the most brilliant minds in business are emptying their coffers to build AI data centers at a frantic pace, you can bet that they are getting strong returns on these investments and not just fruitlessly throwing money away, as some of the bears would have you believe.

Let's look at three semiconductor stocks to buy into this sell-off.
Nvidia
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has been the biggest AI infrastructure winner, and it remains one of the best-positioned semiconductor stocks. Its CUDA software platform, where most foundational AI code was written, gives its graphics processing units (GPUs) a wide moat when it comes to AI model training.
Meanwhile, its move earlier this year to acquire Groq and its language processing units (LPUs) to handle the decoding phase of inference helps give it a strong offering in the inference market, as well.
The company also recently signed a large deal with SK Hynix in which the Korean memory maker will supply it with high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a vital component that needs to be packaged with AI chips. Since HBM is severely supply-constrained, this access gives the company a big edge.
With the stock trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of just 15 times the analysts' consensus for fiscal 2028 (ending January 2028), it is a top growth stock trading at a cheap valuation. I would be a buyer while it's on sale.
Advanced Micro Devices
The faster they go up, the faster they go down. Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) have shot up this year on the back of its strong growth prospects, but they have been hit particularly hard in this recent chip sell-off. Still, the stock's price action doesn't impact the huge growth drivers the company has ahead.
AMD is just starting to see growth surge on tailwinds from inference and agentic AI. The company now has large deals in place with OpenAI, Meta Platforms, Anthropic, and Microsoft for its next-generation GPUs and Helios Rack systems to help run inference for these hyperscalers.
Management paid a hefty price to secure deals with OpenAI and Meta in the form of warrants for up to 10% of its stock, but it did open the doors for future growth and helped establish it as a strong No. 2 player in the space. These deals should drive tremendous revenue growth in the coming years.
At the same time, the company has a huge opportunity with agentic AI and its central processing unit (CPU) business. AI agents will require more CPUs in data centers, and AMD is a leader in this space. It now sees this market ballooning to $220 billion in the next few years.
With AMD having some of the best growth prospects in the industry, now can be a great time to buy the stock following its pullback.
Broadcom
Another semiconductor stock with huge growth ahead is Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO). The company helped Alphabet co-develop its tensor processing units (TPUs), and it is now riding that huge tailwind.
This has also led other hyperscalers to ask it to help them develop their own custom AI chips. Broadcom sees this producing more than $100 billion in sales for fiscal 2027 (ending October 2027), with Citigroup projecting its AI business could grow to $180 billion in fiscal 2028.
Broadcom has also smartly locked up HBM supply with Samsung Electronics, which likely means hyperscalers looking to produce custom AI chips at scale will have to turn to it for help. And its custom chip business also feeds into its fast-growing data center networking segment.
Following a sell-off in the stock, it now trades at a forward P/E of 19 based on fiscal 2027 analyst estimates, making this a great time to buy while it's cheap.

Semiconductor Crash: 3 Stocks to Buy Now While They Are Still on Sale

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) are locked in a back-and-forth battle for the title of world's most valuable company, with both companies having market capitalizations of around $5 trillion. With their values fluctuating daily, the tech crown can shift rapidly between them.
While being the most valuable company doesn't have any impact on how well their shares perform over the long haul, it's worth evaluating these two leading tech companies on their own merits to find out which one is the better buy. Here's what investors should know.

The case for Nvidia
Nvidia has profited for years by being the go-to provider of GPUs for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Tech giants will spend an estimated $750 billion this year and could increase that spending next year. The company enjoys 86% of the AI data center GPU market, making it the undisputed leader ahead of Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.
And its sales and earnings have followed. Even with some of its growth slowing, Nvidia's sales increased 86% to $81.6 billion, and its net income of $1.87 per share in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 (which ended April 26) surged 140% from the year-ago quarter.
While its share price has been a bit volatile lately, Nvidia's position in the AI space is unrivaled, and management believes there's plenty more good times ahead. CEO Jensen Huang said on the first-quarter earnings call: "Demand has gone parabolic. The reason is simple: Agentic AI has arrived. AI can now do productive and valuable work."
What's intriguing about Nvidia right now is that the company is also looking to future opportunities. Management recently revealed more details about its next-generation Vera central processing units (CPUs) for AI, which will directly compete with Intel and AMD CPUs.
It's a bold move for Nvidia, considering that Intel and AMD have the vast majority of the CPU market right now. But the company has likely noticed that tech companies are increasingly interested in efficient CPUs that can process AI agent computing needs quickly. It's still early, but it is positioning itself to potentially benefit from CPU demand in the coming years.
The icing on the cake is that, even with its new CPU opportunities, GPU dominance, and impressive earnings, its shares are still well priced. Nvidia stock has a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 32, slightly below the tech sector's average P/E of 33.
The case for Apple
While many of Apple's peers are pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into expanding data centers and building AI models, Apple has taken a very different approach. It's doubling down on its high-margin devices and subscription sales strategy, all while maintaining its impressive free cash flow.
But that doesn't mean the company isn't benefiting from an increasingly AI-dominant tech industry. Consider that Apple's upcoming Siri update, called Siri AI, will require more-advanced iPhones to run it. It already has 1.5 billion iPhones worldwide, and some analysts believe the improved Siri AI (which uses Google Gemini as its underlying model) will create an upgrade supercycle for the devices. Even if a fraction of current iPhone owners upgraded, it would result in impressive sales, considering iPhone revenue was nearly $210 billion in fiscal 2025.
What's more, Apple says higher usage limits (such as more image-generation capabilities) will be available to users on higher-priced tiers of its iCloud+ subscription plan. Management hasn't outlined the details of the subscription yet, but Wedbush analyst Dan Ives estimates AI services could eventually add $15 billion annually to the company's services revenue. That's on top of services sales (which include subscriptions) of $109 billion in 2025.
Investors have been drawn to Apple lately because the company isn't spending piles of cash to win the AI race. This is allowing it to keep its free cash flow of about $101 billion right now, while its peers are blowing through their cash.
Verdict: Nvidia wins by a hair
I'm a big fan of Apple, and I believe it has unique benefits for investors in the AI age. But I believe Nvidia's position in the GPU market, its expansion into CPUs, and the current spending boom that's underway for data centers mean there are more growth opportunities for the company. I think both stocks are a good buy right now, but Nvidia has the slight advantage as tech giants expand their data center infrastructure.

Better Buy Amid the Tech Crown Shift : Apple vs. Nvidia

The Global X PureCap MSCI Information Technology ETF is seeing unusually high volume in afternoon trading Wednesday, with over 2.3 million shares traded versus three month average volume of about 132,000. Shares of GXPT were down about 0.9% on the day.
Components of that ETF with the highest volume on Wednesday were Intel, trading down about 2.5% with over 68.9 million shares changing hands so far this session, and Nvidia, down about 2.1% on volume of over 66.7 million shares. Cognizant Technology Solutions is the component faring the best Wednesday, up by about 11% on the day, while IREN is lagging other components of the Global X PureCap MSCI Information Technology ETF, trading lower by about 8.9%.

Wednesday's ETF with Unusual Volume: GXPT

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.71%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -1.53%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -0.98%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) are down -0.75%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) are down -1.03%.
Stock indexes are falling today, with the S&P 500 sliding to a 1-month low and the Nasdaq 100 sinking to a 3-month low. Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks are selling off today, leading the overall market lower. Also, heightened geopolitical risks are weighing on stocks as crude prices surged, and bond yields jumped when President Trump said the US will “hit Iran hard” after a recent attack from Iran that targeted a US base in Jordan.

The markets are awaiting the results of the 2-day FOMC meeting that ends early this afternoon, with policymakers expected to keep interest rates unchanged. Also, earnings results from Microsoft and Meta Platforms after today’s close will be looked at to see whether the vast spending behind the buildout of artificial intelligence can deliver adequate returns. The 10-year T-note yield is up +4 bp to 4.64%.
Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) jumped by more than +7% today as the recent lull in hostilities came to an abrupt end after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US airbase and command center in Jordan with ballistic missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have hit and halted three tankers attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launched a joint attack on "Iran-aligned terrorists" in Iraq after the IRGC directed them to target US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.
Tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, diplomatic attempts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz appear to be at an impasse. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi said Oman's proposal for a route through the Strait of Hormuz, with 50% under Iran's control and 50% under Oman's, would not address Iran's concerns and that the inbound passage and part of the outbound channel must be entirely under Iran's control.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -6.4% in the week ended July 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -3.6% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -9.9%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +7 bp to an 11.5-month high of 6.76% from 6.69% the prior week.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms today, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 87% of the 216 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 34% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the conclusion of today’s FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.73%. China's Shanghai Composite rebounded from a 1-week low and closed up +0.40%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2.25-month low and closed down -1.49%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are down -9 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +3.0 bp to 4.637%. T-notes are under pressure today from a +7% surge in crude oil prices, which raises inflation expectations and is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, long liquidation and position evening are weighing on T-notes ahead of the FOMC’s interest rate decision later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +5.0 bp to 3.154%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +7.7 bp to 5.021%.
The German Jun import price index eased to 6.1% y/y from 6.8% y/y in May.
The markets are discounting an 88% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks are sharply lower today, weighing on the broader market. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index ($SOX) dropped to a 2.5-month low and is down more than -3%. Nebius Group NV (NBIS) is down more than -9% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and KLA Corp (KLAC) and Sandisk (SNDK) are down more than -7%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), and ARM Holdings (ARM) are down by more than -5%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is down more than -4%. In addition, Marvell Technology (MRVL), Lam Research (LRCX), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) are down more than -3%, and Nvidia (NVDA), Intel (INTC), and Texas Instruments (TXN) are down more than -2%.
Trucking and freight companies are under pressure today from soaring crude oil prices. ArcBest (ARCB) is down more than -7%, and Saia Inc (SAIA), FedEx Freight Holding (FDXF), JB Hunt Transport Services (JBHT), and CH Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) are down more than -2%. Also, Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL), Marten Transport Ltd (MRTN), Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings (KNX), and XPO Inc (XPO) are down more than -1%.
Airline stocks are sliding today with the surge in crude oil prices. Alaska Air Group (ALK) is down more than -3%, and Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are down more than -2%. Also, American Airlines Group (AAL) and United Airlines Holdings (UAL) are down more than -1%.
Energy producers and service providers are climbing today, with crude oil prices up by more than +7%. Diamondback Energy (FANG) is up more than +4%, and ConocoPhillips (COP), APA Corp (APA), Devon Energy (DVN), ExxonMobil Holdings (XOM), and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) are up more than +3%. Also, Baker Hughes (BKR) and Chevron (CVX) are up more than +2%, and Phillips 66 (PSX) and Valero Energy (VLO) are up more than +1%.
Lennox International (LII) is down more than -19% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.55 billion, weaker than the consensus of $1.56 billion.
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) is down more than -13% after reporting Q2 net sales of $3.27 billion, below the consensus of $3.39 billion.
Avis Budget Group (CAR) is down more than -11% after reporting Q2 EPS of 98 cents, well below the consensus of $1.91.
Masco Corp (MAS) is down more than -10% after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.99 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.08 billion.
Caterpillar (CAT) is down more than -6% to lead losers in the Dow Jones industrials after Baird downgraded the stock to neutral from outperform, citing a growing trend of state and local government actions targeting data centers, a key growth driver for the company.
Humana (HUM) is down more than -6% after it maintained its full-year profit outlook despite posting better-than-expected Q2 profit.
Garmin Ltd (GRMN) is up more than +17% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 revenue of $2.02 billion, above the consensus of $1.92 billion, and raising its full-year revenue estimate to $8.05 billion from a previous estimate of $7.90 billion, stronger than the consensus of $7.99 billion.
GE Healthcare (GEHC) is up more than +11% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.13, better than the consensus of $1.04.
Amphenol (APH) is up more than +6% after reporting Q2 net sales of $8.76 billion, better than the consensus of $8.31 billion.
Teradyne (TER) is up more than +5% after reporting Q2 net revenue of $1.33 billion, stronger than the consensus of $1.22 billion.
Ford Motor (F) is up more than +5% after raising its full-year adjusted EBIT to $10 billion to $11 billion from a previous forecast of $8.5 billion to $10.5 billion.

Stocks Tumble Ahead of FOMC as Chipmakers Plunge

Nvidia's stock is cheap, and the AI infrastructure boom looks like it is here to stay.
Palantir has a frothy valuation but its business is growing rapidly.
Tesla has a high valuation and is dealing with multiple challenges right now.
Investor Michael Burry, who gained fame from the movie The Big Short for his prescient call on the housing market collapse, has not shied away from his bearish view on AI and several prominent AI stocks. Among the stocks Burry is short on are Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR), and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA).
Let's look at why I'd buy Nvidia, hold Palantir, and sell Tesla.

Nvidia: The king of AI at a low valuation
Burry doesn't believe that hyperscalers (owners of large data centers) are getting strong returns on their investments, which will eventually lead them to cut back on their AI infrastructure spending. As the biggest winner from this spending, then, it should perhaps be no surprise that he is short Nvidia. The company's graphics processing units (GPUs) have been the main chips powering the AI boom, and if spending slows, so will its revenue growth.
However, there is no sign that this spending will slow. Hyperscalers have only been increasing capital expenditures (capex), with Alphabet recently increasing its 2026 forecast and saying it will spend significantly more in 2027. At the same time, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing is upping its own spending to build new fabs to keep up with chip demand. A conservative company like TSMC doesn't make this decision lightly, as empty and underutilized fabs are a huge blow to a foundry.
With AI data center spending set to continue booming, Nvidia's stock looks like a buy, trading at a very attractive valuation of just above 15 times fiscal 2028 (ending January 2028) analyst earnings estimates.
Palantir: A high valuation but huge opportunity
With its stock trading at a forward price-to-sales (P/S) multiple of nearly 39.5 and a forward P/E of 86, it's easy to see why Burry would be short Palantir. However, this is a company that has been growing rapidly and could become one of the largest in the world over the next decade. As such, it is a stock that I'd hold and would look to buy on any significant pullback.
Palantir has arguably become one of the most important AI stocks, as its AIP platform helps make AI more useful in real-world settings. It does this by gathering data across an organization and organizing it into an ontology that it links to processes, concepts, and physical objects. The result is an AI application layer that helps reduce AI hallucinations and allows organizations to use or swap in and out any large language model (LLM) they want.
The company has seen tremendous, accelerating revenue growth, and existing clients continue to invest more in its solutions, as evidenced by its astounding 150% net dollar retention rate. Palantir has a long runway of growth still ahead, and it is not a stock I'd bet against, even with its hefty valuation.
Tesla: A high valuation with challenges ahead
With a high valuation (172 forward P/E multiple) and a struggling business, one stock I agree with Burry that is a sell is Tesla. The loss of lucrative, pure-gross margin regulatory credits from a change in U.S. emissions policies is a huge blow to the company's profitability. Meanwhile, Tesla saw auto sales slump last year after CEO Elon Musk alienated many potential buyers by getting involved in politics.
Tesla is betting heavily on robotaxis and robots to fuel future growth, but both businesses have challenges. Its robotaxi business has struggled with safety issues and expanding, while rival Waymo races across the country. Meanwhile, its robotics business faces the challenge of creating entirely new parts and developing a new supply chain while overcoming technical hurdles.
Tesla has long been a way to invest in Elon Musk's vision of the future, but with his other company, Space Exploration Technologies, also now public, the two stocks are competing with each other for investors' attention, and this has been hurting both stocks. I'd stay away.

Famous Investor Michael Burry Is Short Nvidia, Palantir, and Tesla. Why I'd Buy 1 of the Stocks, Hold Another, and Sell the Third.

Pre-market futures are flat-to-down ahead of today’s open, with overseas turbulence in the memory chip market reverberating on domestic shores. We also see something of a hesitation in trading ahead of this afternoon’s Fed decision on interest rates. The Dow is off -340 points at this hour, the tech-heavy Nasdaq is -7, while the S&P 500 and small-cap Russell 2000 are flat.
Saudi Arabia attacked Iran-backed forced in Iraq, demonstrating a further widening of the conflict that originally had been contained to the U.S. and Israel versus Iran. Spot oil prices are back up again this morning, but still just in the $80s per barrel (/bbl); a week ago, Brent crude had surged back over $100/bbl.
South Korean Finance Takes Measures to Calm Market
The finance minister of South Korea overnight has initiated caps on single-stock leveraged ETFs — a clear move to quiet market volatility related to SK Hynix (SKHY), one of the top memory chip producers in the world, which is a key component in the AI trade. The Korean stock market, KOSPI, was down another -6%, -15% over the last week.
This is reportedly the first time the country has applied the breaks to a particular stock trading entity, and it comes the day SK Hynix missed on both top and bottom lines in its first publicly trading earnings report this morning. Both operating profits and sales, however, rose triple-digits in the quarter. The company, one of the biggest suppliers to NVIDIA (NVDA), is down -1% on the news, -22% since its IPO less than three weeks ago.
FOMC Decision: No Longer a Slam Dunk?
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) concludes its fifth meeting so far in 2026, and the first one where analysts have an inkling something might change on the Fed funds rate. Particularly, a quarter-points rate hike has been bandied about as a possibility today over the past week or so, likely due to inflation rates dancing up around +4% over the past couple months and uncertainties around the Strait of Hormuz.
With Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s new methodology intentionally less transparent than the last three Fed chairs (Ben Bernanke, Janet Yellen and Jerome Powell), it’s tough to get a read on what results his leadership will glean this afternoon at 2pm ET. But from this vista, despite whether more hawkish members of the Fed cast their votes to raise interest rates, it’s hard to see a Warsh-led consensus bringing this about so early into his tenure. Unless he’s looking for a fight from President Trump.
Q2 Roundup at a Glance: PG, HUM & More
Procter & Gamble (PG) beat on fiscal Q4 earnings this morning by 2 cents per share, while missing slightly on its top line to $21.2 billion, above the $20.89 billion reported a year ago.
Health insurance giant Humana (HUM) posted a huge Q2 earnings beat this morning: $7.61 per share versus $6.22 in the Zacks consensus, for a +22.35% positive earnings surprise. Revenues of $40.89 billion outpaced expectations by +0.59%.
Biotech major Biogen (BIIB) provided one of the strongest quarterly reports of the morning, with Q2 earnings of $3.60 per share well above the $3.04 projected, on revenues of $2.74 billion which outperformed estimates by +9.4%.
Vans, Timberland and The North Face parent V.F. Corp. (VFC) posted its first earnings miss in the last four quarters: -$0.27 per share versus -$0.22 expected. Revenues of $1.67 billion was -0.29% below consensus.

Q2 Earnings Season in Full Swing

Pre-market futures are flat-to-down ahead of today’s open, with overseas turbulence in the memory chip market reverberating on domestic shores. We also see something of a hesitation in trading ahead of this afternoon’s Fed decision on interest rates. The Dow is off -340 points at this hour, the tech-heavy Nasdaq is -7, while the S&P 500 and small-cap Russell 2000 are flat.
Saudi Arabia attacked Iran-backed forced in Iraq, demonstrating a further widening of the conflict that originally had been contained to the U.S. and Israel versus Iran. Spot oil prices are back up again this morning, but still just in the $80s per barrel (/bbl); a week ago, Brent crude had surged back over $100/bbl.
South Korean Finance Takes Measures to Calm Market
The finance minister of South Korea overnight has initiated caps on single-stock leveraged ETFs — a clear move to quiet market volatility related to SK Hynix SKHY, one of the top memory chip producers in the world, which is a key component in the AI trade. The Korean stock market, KOSPI, was down another -6%, -15% over the last week.
This is reportedly the first time the country has applied the breaks to a particular stock trading entity, and it comes the day SK Hynix missed on both top and bottom lines in its first publicly trading earnings report this morning. Both operating profits and sales, however, rose triple-digits in the quarter. The company, one of the biggest suppliers to NVIDIA NVDA, is down -1% on the news, -22% since its IPO less than three weeks ago.
FOMC Decision: No Longer a Slam Dunk?
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) concludes its fifth meeting so far in 2026, and the first one where analysts have an inkling something might change on the Fed funds rate. Particularly, a quarter-points rate hike has been bandied about as a possibility today over the past week or so, likely due to inflation rates dancing up around +4% over the past couple months and uncertainties around the Strait of Hormuz.
With Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s new methodology intentionally less transparent than the last three Fed chairs (Ben Bernanke, Janet Yellen and Jerome Powell), it’s tough to get a read on what results his leadership will glean this afternoon at 2pm ET. But from this vista, despite whether more hawkish members of the Fed cast their votes to raise interest rates, it’s hard to see a Warsh-led consensus bringing this about so early into his tenure. Unless he’s looking for a fight from President Trump.
Q2 Roundup at a Glance: PG, HUM & More
Procter & Gamble PG beat on fiscal Q4 earnings this morning by 2 cents per share, while missing slightly on its top line to $21.2 billion, above the $20.89 billion reported a year ago. For more on PG’s earnings, click here.
Health insurance giant Humana HUM posted a huge Q2 earnings beat this morning: $7.61 per share versus $6.22 in the Zacks consensus, for a +22.35% positive earnings surprise. Revenues of $40.89 billion outpaced expectations by +0.59%. For more on HUM’s earnings, click here.
Biotech major Biogen BIIB provided one of the strongest quarterly reports of the morning, with Q2 earnings of $3.60 per share well above the $3.04 projected, on revenues of $2.74 billion which outperformed estimates by +9.4%. For more on BIIB’s earnings, click here.
Vans, Timberland and The North Face parent V.F. Corp. VFC posted its first earnings miss in the last four quarters: -$0.27 per share versus -$0.22 expected. Revenues of $1.67 billion was -0.29% below consensus. For more on VFC’s earnings, click here.
