A saturated and highly competitive sector
In the past five years, the S&P 500 has returned approximately 73%. Conversely, Nike, along with its largest competitors Adidas and Under Armour, struggled mightily. Adidas' stock in this same time frame has declined 51%, and Under Armour is down a staggering 65% as of March 10.

This decline across major athletic apparel brands speaks more to the struggles of the entire sector as it contends with inflation, tariffs, and greater supply chain disruptions. The industry has also struggled to innovate and compete with niche brands that target specific sports and specializations.
Nike's fundamentals are still strong
Nike is in the middle of its comeback, which internally is called "Win Now." The strategic plan began with a shake-up of senior leadership, announced back in December. The apparel brand is also restructuring its distribution approach and is moving away from its emphasis on direct-to-consumer sales. Because of this, Nike is now building its wholesale relationships with department stores and Amazon. It had previously cut ties with Amazon in 2019.
Nike is also refocusing on innovation and design to once again be an industry leader. The results of Win Now likely won't come to fruition for a few more quarters. However, Nike's moat remains intact, and its earnings aren't a disaster.
In its last quarterly earnings release, Nike reported modest revenue growth of 1%. More importantly, the company's balance sheet is still strong with a manageable debt load compared to its cash, short-term investments, and accounts receivable.
Nike has also increased its dividend for 24 consecutive years now.
Is it a buy in 2026?
The stock's forward P/E ratio is just under 23, and its PEG ratio is 1.26, both of which suggest Nike is fairly priced at the moment. Since Elliott Hill returned as CEO in 2024, my belief that Nike can and will slowly right its ship has grown. Hill has more than three decades of experience within Nike and knows the business thoroughly.
It's not going to be a simple task, as economic pressures continue to weigh on the brand, and a saturated market means greater competition and lower consumer loyalty. Yet Nike has shown its relevance in sports culture time and again. It has the ability to hire the brightest minds and maintain its status as the premium athletic brand around the globe.
I think Nike will rebound over the next few years, and buying now will pay off for patient, long-term investors.

Down 11% in 2026: Is Nike Finally a Buy?

In the latest trading session, Nike (NKE) closed at $54.13, marking a -2.82% move from the previous day. This change lagged the S&P 500's daily loss of 1.52%. At the same time, the Dow lost 1.56%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 1.78%.
Coming into today, shares of the athletic apparel maker had lost 10.67% in the past month. In that same time, the Consumer Discretionary sector lost 2.83%, while the S&P 500 lost 2.25%.
Market participants will be closely following the financial results of Nike in its upcoming release. The company plans to announce its earnings on March 31, 2026. The company is expected to report EPS of $0.32, down 40.74% from the prior-year quarter. Meanwhile, the latest consensus estimate predicts the revenue to be $11.29 billion, indicating a 0.17% increase compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
In terms of the entire fiscal year, the Zacks Consensus Estimates predict earnings of $1.57 per share and a revenue of $46.8 billion, indicating changes of -27.31% and +1.07%, respectively, from the former year.
Any recent changes to analyst estimates for Nike should also be noted by investors. These recent revisions tend to reflect the evolving nature of short-term business trends. As a result, we can interpret positive estimate revisions as a good sign for the business outlook.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a hot buzzword in the markets and the economy. Incredible amounts of capital are being invested in computing resources to build the infrastructure. However, the tools that are already available are benefiting companies that decide to be proactive and figure out ways to enhance their performance in this new technological age.

1. Netflix
The first business on this list is Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX), a dominant force in the streaming entertainment market. It ended 2025 with 325 million subscribers. And it reported 16% revenue growth and a 29.5% operating margin last year, showcasing its financial success.
Netflix has long used AI and machine learning to improve its recommendation algorithm. There is so much content on the platform, it can be overwhelming for viewers. It helps that the underlying technology is there to assist them with figuring out what to watch. Of course, this is bolstered by the immense amount of viewer data that Netflix collects.
The company uses AI in other ways, too. In Happy Gilmore 2, released in July 2025, the technology was used to make characters look younger. It makes sense that AI can be used in visual effects.
Netflix launched its ad-based subscription tier in November 2022, and targeting capabilities are improving with the help of AI. "In 2025, we began testing new AI tools to help advertisers create custom ads based on Netflix's intellectual property, and we plan to build on this progress in 2026," the Q4 2025 shareholder letter reads.
2. Nike
Nike (NYSE: NKE) is next on this list of companies working with AI. The leading sportswear enterprise commands significantglobal marketshare, supported by its strong brand. However, its shares have been wildly disappointing amid ongoing turnaround efforts. They currently trade 68% below their peak (as of March 9)
For Nike, AI is in the DNA. Consumers receive individualized product recommendations when shopping, powered by AI. Nike's marketing strategies, supply chain, and inventory management are impacted by AI. And the company acquired AI start-up Celect in 2019 to help with demand forecasting.
In April 2024, the business unveiled the Nike A.I.R. (Athlete Imagined Revolution) project. The company works with top athletes, like Kylian Mbappé and Victor Wembanyama, to create unique and innovative footwear designs. Generative AI allows Nike to think outside the box.
It's encouraging for investors to see Nike focusing on these kinds of tech-driven initiatives. However, that focus isn't exactly helping the business right now, as the financials have been disappointing. Nike reported a 10% year-over-year revenue dip in fiscal 2025 (ended May 31, 2025), while diluted earnings per share tanked 42%.
3. Uber
And finally, we turn our attention to Uber (NYSE: UBER). The mobility and delivery stock has been a huge winner, rising 117% in the past 36 months. Its growth is impressive, with revenue and operating income up 18% and 99%, respectively, year over year in 2025. And its 202 million monthly active users have made it a partner of choice for autonomous vehicle enterprises.
Uber AI Solutions is a rapidly growing segment that caters to enterprise customers. As it scaled, Uber developed certain tech capabilities to manage its own operations. Enterprises can now pay for these AI features, for tasks like data collection and product testing, for their own use.
Before this latest launch, Uber was working with AI to improve its platform for all stakeholders. For example, rider/driver matching, pricing, customer support chat, and estimating arrival times are all powered by AI.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said on the Q3 2025earnings callthat it's a strategic priority for "Generative AI embedding intelligence across Uber to enhance productivity, optimize our operations, and deliver more personalized consumer experiences."
Netflix, Nike, and Uber aren't shying away from AI. While this doesn't just assume their stocks are going to be winners in the future, it's a sign that their management teams are embracing this exciting technology.

3 Industry-Leading Consumer Companies Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Unique Ways

Nike (NYSE: NKE) CEO Elliott Hill took the reins of the vaunted sportswear giant a year-and-a-half ago with a tall task ahead of him.
Hill was asked to turn around the struggling Swoosh, which was facing the biggest drawdown in its history as a publicly traded company. Revenue growth had fallen as low as negative double digits, as Nike was losing share to upstart challengers like Deckers' Hoka and On Holding.

Since taking over Nike, Hill has made a lot of changes. He's refreshed the management team, streamlined the organizational structure, and brought the focus of the company back to sport. He's also stepped up investments in innovation, pulled back on legacy styles, and reestablished relationships with key wholesale partners after the company overinvested in the direct-to-consumer channel.
Some of those efforts have paid off. Nike's revenue has stabilized with sales up 1% to $12.4 billion in the fiscal second quarter, its most recent one, and it's returned to growth in running, one of its biggest categories.
However, Nike has slumped in recent months and is back to hovering around an 8-year low as margins have continued to compress as the company invests in the turnaround. With the share price now below $55, Wall Street has taken notice.
Wall Street smells opportunity
Barclays upgraded the stock on Wednesday, lifting its rating from neutral to a buy-equivalent and raising its price target from $64 to $73.
Barclays noted Nike's improving inventory levels, which should help lift margins, and that the recovery in running could pave the way for the rest of the business.
Wells Fargo also recently reiterated its buy-equivalent rating on the stock, though it removed Nike from its list of top picks. Finally, Jefferies said that commentary from Dick's Sporting Goods in its fourth-quarter report gives it confidence in Nike's wholesale recovery.
Is Nike a buy?
Nike stock is now down 70% from its all-time high, which came at the end of the pandemic-era stock market boom. However, the stock isn't exactly cheap. In fact, Nike trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 32 as its earnings per share has tumbled along with the stock.
The buy case for the stock, therefore, requires a real turnaround in the underlying business, though the seeds for that are there. Analysts expect profits to fall sharply when Nike reports third-quarter earnings later this month, but they see the company returning to bottom-line growth after that.
Despite its woes, Nike still has a lot of competitive advantages, including its well-known brand and roster of star athletes. Hill looks like he's making the right moves, and Nike should eventually find its way back to growth.
Investors will have to be patient, but Nike looks like a buy at the current price. The components of a turnaround are there. Still, it's up to Hill to put them together.

Are Nike CEO Elliott Hill's Turnaround Efforts Paying Off? Wall Street Seems to Think So.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Wednesday fell -0.08%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) fell -0.61%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) rose +0.03%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) fell -0.15%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) fell -0.07%.
Stocks were undercut by Wednesday’s +6 bp rise in the 10-year T-note yield and the +4.6% rally in WTI crude oil prices. Crude oil prices rallied despite the IEA members' decision to release 400 million barrels from emergency oil stockpiles.

Stocks saw downward pressure as the Iran war dragged on, with missiles hitting three vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf on Wednesday, and new missile volleys hitting Israel.
However, tech stocks received support from Oracle's positive AI news.
The oil market took in stride Wednesday’s decision by IEA members to release 400 million barrels of oil from strategic stockpiles, much larger than the 182 million-barrel release in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The release is designed to replace the oil lost due to the Strait of Hormuz shutdown and the subsequent production cuts by Persian Gulf oil producers, although it will take some time for the oil stockpiles to reach the market.
Stocks showed little net reaction to the CPI report, which was in line with market expectations. The Feb CPI rose +0.3% m/m and +2.4% y/y, while the Feb core CPI rose +0.2% m/m and +2.5% y/y. The headline CPI report of +2.4% y/y was just 0.1 point above the 5-year low posted in April 2025, while the core CPI of +2.5% y/y matched the 5-year low posted in the two previous months. Even though the CPI figures are at or near 5-year lows, they are still above the Fed’s target of +2%. Moreover, inflation pressures will worsen in the coming months due to the recent spike in oil and fuel prices caused by the war in Iran.
Stocks were undercut after JPMorgan Chase said it is restricting lending to private credit funds amid markdowns on some of its loans in the sector, hampering the sector's attempt to weather the current crisis. The $1.8 trillion private credit sector is struggling to cope with an investor exodus driven by unattractive returns and fears of more financial difficulties among portfolio borrowers.
Q4 earnings season is nearly over, with more than 95% of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 492 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a -25 bp FOMC rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets closed mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -1.00%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.25%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +1.43%, adding to Tuesday’s +2.88% recovery rally.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) fell -16 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +6.0 bp to 4.216%, adding to Tuesday’s rise of +6 bp. T-note prices were undercut by Wednesday’s +4.6% rally in oil prices and the +3.2 bp rise in the 10-year inflation expectations rate to 2.383%. T-note prices were also undercut by supply overhang as the Treasury sold 10-year T-notes on Wednesday and will sell 30-year bonds on Thursday. The T-note market largely ignored the CPI report as stale news, given the surge in oil and fuel prices since the Iran war began.
European government bond yields rose sharply. The 10-year German bund yield rose +9.6 bp to 2.932%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +13.3 bp to 4.686%.
Swaps are discounting a 4% chance of a -25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks closed mixed, with Amazon.com (AMZN) falling -0.9%, but Tesla (TSLA) rising +2.1%.
Oracle (ORCL) rallied more than +9% after reporting strong results and guidance indicating strong demand for AI computing.
The Oracle news provided early support to the software and computing infrastructure sector, but most of those stocks fell back. Datadog (DDOG) rose more than +3%. However, IBM (IBM) fell -0.7%, and Microsoft (MSFT) fell -0.3%.
Chip stocks also saw some support from the Oracle news, led by gains of +4.1% in Micron Technology (MU), +3.2% in Align Technology (ALGN), and +2.6% in Intel (INTC). Nvidia (NVDA) rose +0.5%
Oil stocks saw support with the rally in oil prices. Valero Energy (VLO) rallied +6.5%, Marathon Oil (MPC) rallied +5.4%, and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) rallied +4.6%. Chevron (CVX) rose +3.0%, and Exxon (XOM) rose +2.3%.
Nike (NKE) gave up an early advance and closed down -0.7% after an upgrade from Barclays to overweight.
Campbell’s Co (CPB) fell nearly -7% after cutting its full-year earnings guidance.
UniFirst Corp (UNF) rallied more than +6% after Cintas agreed to buy the company in a deal worth $5.5 billion.

Stocks are seeing downward pressure as the Iran war drags on, with three vessels hit by missiles today in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, and new missile volleys hitting Israel.
However, tech stocks are seeing support from today’s positive AI news from Oracle.
Stocks showed little net reaction to the CPI report, which was in line with market expectations.
The oil market took in stride today’s decision by IEA members to release 400 million barrels of oil from strategic stockpiles, much larger than the 182 million-barrel release in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The release is designed to replace the oil lost due to the Strait of Hormuz shutdown and the subsequent production cuts by Persian Gulf oil producers, although it will take some time for the oil stockpiles to reach the market.
Today’s US Feb CPI report was exactly in line with market expectations. The Feb CPI rose +0.3% m/m and +2.4% y/y, while the Feb core CPI rose +0.2% m/m and +2.5% y/y. Today’s headline CPI report of +2.4% y/y was just 0.1 point above the 5-year low posted in April 2025, while today’s core CPI of +2.5% y/y matched the 5-year low posted in the two previous months. Even though the CPI figures are at or near 5-year lows, they are still above the Fed’s target of +2%. Moreover, inflation pressures will worsen in the coming months due to the recent spike in oil and fuel prices caused by the war in Iran.
Stocks were undercut today after JPMorgan Chase said it is restricting lending to private credit funds amid markdowns on some of its loans in the sector, hampering the sector's attempt to weather the current crisis. The $1.8 trillion private credit sector is struggling to cope with an investor exodus driven by unattractive returns and fears of more financial difficulties among portfolio borrowers.
Q4 earnings season is nearly over, with more than 95% of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 492 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a -25 bp FOMC rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets are mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -1.00%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.25%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +1.43%, adding to Tuesday’s +2.88% recovery rally.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) are down by -16.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +5.6 bp at 4.212%, adding to Tuesday’s rise of +6 bp. T-note prices are being undercut by today’s +4% rally in oil prices and the +3.6 bp rise in the 10-year inflation expectations rate to 2.386%. T-note prices are also being undercut by supply overhang ahead of the Treasury’s sale of 10-year T-notes today and 30-year bonds on Thursday. The T-note market largely ignored today’s CPI report as stale news, given the surge in oil and fuel prices since the Iran war began.
European government bond yields are sharply higher. The 10-year German bund yield is up +9.6 bp at 2.932%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +14.4 bp at 4.698%.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks are mixed, with Amazon.com (AMZN) showing a decline of more than -1% but Tesla (TSLA) showing a gain of nearly +2%.
Oracle (ORCL) is up more than +10% after reporting strong results and guidance indicating strong demand for AI computing.
The Oracle news is providing early support to the software and computing infrastructure sector, but most of those stocks have now turned lower. Datadog (DDOG) is up more than +2%. However, IBM (IBM) and Microsoft (MSFT) are both down about -0.8%.
Chip stocks also saw some support from the Oracle news, led by gains of more than +3% in Micron Technology (MU) and more than +2% in Intel (INTC). Nvidia (NVDA) is up +0.4%
Oil stocks are seeing support with today’s rally in oil prices. Marathon Oil (MPC) and Valero are up more than +4%. Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Devon Energy (DVN), and APA Corp (APA) are up more than +2%.
Nike (NKE) gave up an early advance and is now little changed after an upgrade from Barclays to overweight.
Campbell’s Co (CPB) is down more than -7% after cutting its full-year earnings guidance.
UniFirst Corp (UNF) is up more than +8% after Cintas agreed to buy the company in a deal worth $5.5 billion.

The Magnificent Seven technology stocks are trading mostly higher, led by a gain of more than +2% in Tesla (TSLA) and a gain of +0.8% in Nvidia (NVDA)

The Oracle news is providing support to the software and computing infrastructure sector, with Crowdstrike (CRWD) and Datadog (DDOG) posting gains of more than +3%. IBM (IBM) is up more than +1%, and Microsoft (MSFT) is up +0.6%.
Chip stocks are also seeing support from the Oracle news, led by gains of more than +2% in Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). Nvidia (NVDA) is up +0.8%

Stocks Mixed as IEA Announces Historic Oil Reserve Release

In early trading on Wednesday, shares of Nike topped the list of the day's best performing Dow Jones Industrial Average components, trading up 2.0%. Year to date, Nike has lost about 10.2% of its value.
And the worst performing Dow component thus far on the day is Procter & Gamble, trading down 1.7%. Procter & Gamble is showing a gain of 7.0% looking at the year to date performance.
Two other components making moves today are Caterpillar, trading down 1.1%, and Salesforce, trading up 1.7% on the day.

When Nike's (NYSE: NKE) revenue began to slow, many investors blamed competition.
But Nike also disrupted itself. Several years ago, it aggressively shifted toward direct-to-consumer (DTC). Management reduced wholesale exposure and prioritized owned stores and digital platforms. The strategy aimed to lift margins, strengthen data ownership, and deepen customer relationships. Instead, it introduced volatility.

Now Nike is recalibrating. That reset may determine whether the turnaround produces durable earnings growth or recurring instability in the next few years.
The strategic swing
Nike did not misread the industry trend. DTC can improve gross margins and strengthen brand control.
But execution speed matters. To this end, Nike pulled back from wholesale before digital demand fully scaled. Wholesale partners once provided predictable volume, geographic reach, and inventory absorption. When Nike reduced that buffer, problems began to appear.
Inventory rose, promotions increased, and gross margin got compressed. Revenue fell 10% in fiscal 2025 ended May 31, 2025, and earnings were impacted even worse.
For investors accustomed to predictable, sustainable growth, that change hit them hard.
Why balance drives earnings quality
To rectify its mistake, Nike is now rebuilding its wholesale relationships while maintaining digital engagement.
This shift does not guarantee faster growth. Yet. It should improve earnings stability over time. After all, wholesale provides scale and steadier volume, and complementing DTC delivers a higher margin and richer customer data. Together, they can smooth earnings swings and reduce inventory risk.
Moreover, a balanced channel mix tightens forecasting. Better forecasting, in turn, reduces discounting, thereby improving overall margins.
That chain reaction matters more than short-term sales spikes. As Nike's earlier imbalance amplified swings, a more measured mix could restore the consistency that it badly needed.
The execution challenge
Rebalancing distribution may be in the right direction, but it still requires enormous discipline.
Nike must grow wholesale sales without diluting brand equity and sustain digital engagement without overspending on marketing. It must better align production with demand than it did during the DTC expansion. After all, channel strategy does not fail because of the concept. It fails because of execution gaps.
In other words, the optimal model for Nike going forward likely blends premium digital engagement with disciplined wholesale partnerships. Finding that equilibrium will take effort and time.
What does it mean for investors?
Nike's brand is undergoing one of the biggest challenges since its inception.
If Nike's channel reset can produce what investors had always known -- steady, mid-single-digit revenue growth with gradual margin expansion -- earnings per share can compound again over the next several years. But if volatility persists, investors may continue to stay away from the stock.
The market does not require explosive growth from Nike. It requires consistency. And that consistency will decide whether the stock regains its past glory in the next five years.

Looking at options trading activity among components of the Russell 3000 index, there is noteworthy activity today in lululemon athletica inc (Symbol: LULU), where a total volume of 17,471 contracts has been traded thus far today, a contract volume which is representative of approximately 1.7 million underlying shares (given that every 1 contract represents 100 underlying shares). That number works out to 83.1% of LULU's average daily trading volume over the past month, of 2.1 million shares. Especially high volume was seen for the $330 strike call option expiring January 21, 2028, with 1,252 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 125,200 underlying shares of LULU.
