Despite the market's AI craze, Netflix stock has dumped more than 35% since the summer. World-class companies don't go on sale often. Here is why investors may want to buy the dip before Netflix's potential monster run this year.
Acquisition drama is weighing the stock down
Netflix peaked over the summer, but the stock has only fallen further since the company announced it had struck an $82.7 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. Studios, HBO, and HBO Max from Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal still needs to go through regulators, but it would clearly be a massive swing for the company if it closes.
One of the market's primary concerns about the acquisition is its funding. Netflix was going to fund the deal with a mix of cash and stock, but had to revise it to an all-cash structure under pressure from a competitor, Paramount Skydance, which was hoping to convince Warner Bros. Discovery to back out.
The deal could add up to $59 billion to Netflix's balance sheet. Netflix, which currently has little debt, can afford it, but all that new debt would likely weigh on the company for a while and diminish its financial flexibility.
Why this dip is worth buying
The further into the future you look, the more you might like this deal for Netflix. The acquisition would add a vast amount of intellectual property to Netflix's portfolio, including the Harry Potter franchise, the DC Universe, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Big Bang Theory, and much more.
Owning Warner Bros. gives Netflix an imposing footprint in television and film, and the HBO Max streaming service adds to Netflix's existing global base of 325 million subscribers. The cross-selling and other monetization opportunities seem endless, especially if Netflix follows the Walt Disney Company's playbook of reinventing key franchises multiple times with remakes and spinoffs.
It would probably take several years, perhaps longer, to pay down that debt. But once Netflix gets there, investors might have a massive cash cow on its hands, an AI-powered media giant with a global footprint that could grow for years as consumers continue to adopt streaming in emerging and established markets.
Netflix's decline has dropped the stock to a price-to-earnings ratio of 34, near its lowest valuation over the past three years. It could pay to buy the dip here, as Netflix could go on a monster run once the market gets some acquisition clarity and realizes just how bright Netflix's future is.

Why is Netflix stock down?
As a services business, Netflix is vulnerable to macroeconomic themes like inflation and how that can impact consumer purchasing power. While the effects of inflation and tariffs continue to ripple through the economy, recent GDP growth suggests that consumer spending remains resilient and is holding up quite well -- all things considered.
The main drag on Netflix stock has nothing to do with the economy or even the current trajectory of the business. Rather, Netflix has been in a months-long contest with Paramount Skydance to acquire the film and television assets of Warner Bros. Discovery (NASDAQ: WBD).
Smart investors have been asking the following questions:
How long could the antitrust process take should Netflix and Warner Bros. come to an agreement?
How will Netflix finance the transaction?
How does the content catalog from Warner Bros. Discovery add strategic value to Netflix?
Here's the big picture: There are a lot of uncertainties that come with acquisitions. And if there's anything Wall Street dislikes, it's unpredictability.
Forget Warner Bros.: It's all about the business model
While the Warner Bros. acquisition now dominates the talking points surrounding Netflix, investors should not become distracted by the mechanics of this deal. Instead, focus on what you do know as opposed to what you don't know.
Here's what we know: The last five years have been transformational for Netflix. Of course, the stay-at-home theme during the COVID-19 pandemic became a subtle catalyst for the company. However, the profile below hints at something deeper -- Netflix's accelerating revenue complemented by an improving gross margin profile indicates that the company has been able to run an efficient business in a post-pandemic environment.
Another way of saying this is that there can be a stickiness factor when it comes to a discretionary service like Netflix. The company has been able to retain its customers thanks to smart capital allocation in the form of content refreshes -- constantly updating its library with new series.
Netflix's business model of recurring revenue combined with profitable subscriber economics has fueled a surge in earnings growth. In essence, Netflix has created a lucrative virtuous cycle featuring strong retention rates, low churn, and steady growth across both the top- and bottom-lines.
This reinforcement loop has provided Netflix with additional financial flexibility to pursue other growth avenues across advertising, immersive entertainment, and inorganic opportunities such as the Warner Bros. deal.
Is Netflix stock a buy under $90?
At first glance, Netflix's forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 27 might not appear like a bargain.
However, Netflix is trading at a considerable discount to some less profitable streaming companies and entertainment conglomerates. In addition, Netflix is hovering near its cheapest level in five years based on forward earnings estimates.
While I suspect the stock will continue to exhibit some volatility so long as the Warner Bros. deal hangs in limbo, I think now is still a good opportunity to scoop up some shares of Netflix at a discount.

Financial results were strong
For the fourth quarter, Netflix's revenue increased by 17.6% year over year to $12.1 billion. Its earnings per share climbed 30.2% year over year to $0.56, while Netflix's free cash flow rose 35.8% year over year to $1.9 billion. Netflix is still the king of streaming and now boasts over 325 million paid subscribers.
The company's results were strong overall, and even though it guided for slower top-line growth in the first quarter, the slate of new and returning content it is launching on its platform should give it plenty of momentum throughout the year as it attracts even more paid subscribers.
The acquisition could unlock value
Netflix's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. won't be cheap. The all-cash transaction would cost a hefty $82.7 billion. It would add significant debt to the company's balance sheet. Some investors and analysts are also worried about some drawbacks from lawmakers and regulators. All of these are important considerations.
However, Netflix's move here could be an important one for the company. With all the success the streaming giant has had, Warner Bros. boasts a deep library of popular characters and movie franchises. If you combine that with Netflix's ability to use data on viewer habits to create popular content -- from movies to TV shows -- the possibilities become attractive.
Netflix will likely juice Warner Bros. brands for all they are worth, launching sequels and spin-offs endlessly. This could strengthen engagement in its ecosystem while attracting significantly more viewers to the platform. So, even though the acquisition isn't without its risks, the upside is also massive.
There is plenty of growth potential
Even without this move, though, Netflix's future in the streaming niche remains bright. True, it has plenty of competition, which has significantly intensified since the turn of the decade or so. But thanks to its brand name and network effects -- and several changes it made to its business -- it has been able to remain the top player. As management points out, Netflix still commands less than 10% of TV viewing time even in its most advanced markets.
There is plenty of white space left for the company to exploit. And after the beating it took over the past six months, it is a great time to buy the stock.

iPhone sales have been benefiting from strong iPhone 17 sales as well as iPhone 16 shipments in Japan, India and Southeast Asia, per Counterpoint data. Apple led the smartphone market with 20% share in calendar 2025, and shipments increased 10% year over year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal first-quarter iPhone net sales is pegged at $78.03 billion, suggesting roughly 13% year-over-year growth.

The Services business is expected to have benefited from a growing installed base of devices as well as subscriber base of its offerings, including Apple TV+, Apple Pay, Apple Music and more. Apple’s streaming business, Apple TV+, is benefiting from a strong content portfolio despite stiff competition in the streaming space from the likes of Disney DIS, Netflix NFLX and Peacock.

According to Gartner’s list, Lenovo was placed at the #1 spot with shipment growth of 14.3%, trailed by Apple’s 5.7%, HP’s 12.1% and Dell Technologies’ 18.2% growth.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal first-quarter Mac net sales is pegged at $9.07 billion, suggesting 0.9% year-over-year growth.

For investors looking for a good investment, one good filter is to think deeply about a business's durability. Is it a company likely to still be performing well 10 years from now? This helps rule out businesses that may be too risky for a portfolio in the first place. Two companies with durable traits that come to mind are Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) and Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX).
Both companies have dominant brands in their respective spaces.

While Netflix's business is the more focused of the two, with most of its revenue coming from subscriptions to its streaming service, it also has an emerging advertising business. And, of course, its streaming service is made up of an exhaustive library of licensed content, but more notably, many popular original series and movies as well.
And though Alphabet generates the majority of its revenue from advertising, it also makes money from subscriptions across its platforms and a fast-growing cloud computing business.
But which of these two market leaders is the better buy?
Netflix: strong revenue growth and expanding operating margins
While Netflix isn't the sprawling technology company that Alphabet is, the company's streaming service does have global reach. The service is available in more than 190 countries and boasts over 325 million subscribers.
And despite its size, the company continues to grow rapidly. Revenue in Netflix's fourth quarter rose 17.6% year over year -- an acceleration from 17.2% in Q3 and even higher than the company's full-year growth rate of 16% in 2024.
But what's particularly compelling about Netflix's business is that it's still expanding its profit margin. After achieving an operating margin of 26.7% in 2024, Netflix's operating margin expanded to 29.5% in 2025. And management believes its operating margin can expand further to 31.5% in 2026.
Also worth noting: Netflix is increasingly benefiting from its still-small but fast-growing advertising business. In 2025, Netflix's advertising revenue more than doubled in size, growing to over $1.5 billion in revenue, or 3.3% of its total revenue -- and management expects this business to "roughly double" this year.
Alphabet: advertising, cloud computing, and more
Alphabet's business is similarly growing fast, with revenue rising 16% year over year in Q3. But it's more diversified -- and it has a rapidly growing cloud computing business that already represents a meaningful portion of revenue.
The company's Google Services business, which is its largest segment, includes a diversified mix of subsegments, with "Google search and other" being the biggest. Other contributors to the segment include YouTube ads, Google Network revenue, and revenue from subscriptions, platforms, and devices. Alphabet's third-quarter Google Services revenue rose 14% year over year.
But the company's Google Cloud segment, or its cloud computing business, rose 34% year over year in Q3, accounting for about 15% of revenue. Impressively, the segment's operating income soared 85% year over year to $3.6 billion.
Which growth stock is the better buy?
So, which of the two stocks is a better buy? To me, Alphabet looks like the clear winner when comparing the two.
Sure, on valuation, the two stocks look about the same. Alphabet and Netflix's price-to-earnings ratios are 33 and 34, respectively, as of this writing. But Alphabet's business is more diversified, with broad-based double-digit growth across almost every major segment. In addition, its cloud business is growing much faster than its overall business and boasts a rapidly expanding operating margin.
Netflix does have a fast-growing ads business, but it's still small relative to its overall revenue. Still, it's a notable catalyst. Further, the company's expanding operating margin is a reason to be upbeat about Netflix stock.
But unlike Alphabet, Netflix has a pending massive acquisition of some of Warner Bros. Discovery's (NASDAQ: WBD) assets, specifically its namesake Warner Bros. film and television studios, including HBO Max and HBO. The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions, is valued at $82.7 billion -- about 23% of Netflix's total market capitalization as of this writing. While an acquisition like this obviously presents opportunities, it also carries with it significant risks.
Overall, Alphabet looks like a better buy given its more diversified business and the absence of a pending risky acquisition.
