Stock indexes settled mixed on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrials falling to a 1.5-week low. Soaring crude oil prices boosted inflation expectations and bond yields, and were negative for stocks. WTI crude oil surged to a 3-week high on Wednesday after the US signaled it will maintain its naval blockade of Iran for the foreseeable future. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump told his aides to prepare for an extended blockade and that it carries less of a risk for the US than resuming hostilities or walking away from the conflict without securing a deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear activities.

The broader market came under pressure on Wednesday after three FOMC members dissented in favor of no easing bias in the FOMC ‘s decision to keep policy unchanged. Also, hawkish comments from Fed Chair Powell weighed on stocks, as he said a bit of monetary policy restraint is the right place to be. The 10-year T-note yield rose +6 bp to a 1-month high of 4.41%.
The Nasdaq 100 moved higher on Wednesday as technology stocks rallied on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV rose +25%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc rose by more than +10% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after Wednesday’s close, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Wednesday’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) soared by more than +6% on Wednesday as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. Crude prices raced to their highs on Wednesday after President Trump told Axios that he will not lift a naval blockade of Iran's ports until he secures a deal with Iran to address the country's nuclear program. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
As expected, the FOMC kept the fed funds target rate unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75%. The vote was 8-4 in favor of the decision, with Fed Governor Miran dissenting in favor of a -25 bp rate cut. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said they "supported maintaining the target range for the federal funds rate but did not support inclusion of an easing bias in the statement at this time."
The post-meeting statement said, "Developments in the Middle East are contributing to a high level of uncertainty." Also, "job gains have remained low, on average," and the jobless rate "has been little changed in recent months, while inflation "is elevated, in part reflecting the recent increase in global energy prices."
Fed Chair Powell said policymakers think the policy stance is in a very good place to wait, as inflation is kind of misbehaving, and that maybe a little bit of restriction in monetary policy is the right place to be.
Kevin Warsh won the banking confirmation vote of the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday, putting him on track to be confirmed as Fed Chair by the full Senate before Jerome Powell’s term ends on May 15. Fed Chair Powell said after Wednesday’s FOMC meeting that he will continue to serve as Fed Governor “for a period of time to be determined.” Mr. Powell’s seat on the Board of Governors doesn’t expire until 2028.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate cut or a rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Wednesday, 81% of the 220 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and closed down -0.34%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average did not trade, as markets in Japan were closed for the Showa Day holiday.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Wednesday closed down -16 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +5.5 bp to 4.4010%. Jun T-notes fell to a 4-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 1-month high of 4.430%. T-notes were under pressure on Thursday amid rising crude oil prices, as WTI surged more than +6% to a 32-week high, boosting inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to 1 14.5-month high of 2.479% on Wednesday. T-notes were also pressured by stronger-than-expected US economic reports on Mar housing starts and Mar core capital goods new orders.
T-notes sank to their lows on Wednesday afternoon after three FOMC members dissented in favor of a no-easing bias in the committee’s policy decision. Also, Fed Chair Powell said a little bit of restriction in monetary policy is the right place to be.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 1-month high of 3.118% and finished up +4.3 bp to 3.110%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.078% and finished up +6.5 bp to 5.071%.
Eurozone Apr economic confidence fell -3.2 to a nearly 5.5-year low of 93.0, weaker than expectations of 95.1.
Eurozone Mar M3 money supply rose +3.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.1% y/y.
Swaps are discounting a 12% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed up more than +25% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after forecasting Q2 revenue of $3.35 billion to $3.55 billion, stronger than the consensus of $3.27 billion. Intel (INTC) closed up more than +12%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up +11% after forecasting Q4 adjusted EPS of $4.80 to $5.20, well above the consensus of $3.96. Also, Sandisk (SNDK) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +6%, and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +5%. In addition, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +4%, and Micron Technology (MU) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +2%.

Phillips 66 (PSX) closed up more than +5%, and APA Corp (APA) and Valero Energy (VLO) closed up more than +4%. Airlines and cruise line operators were under pressure on Wednesday as WTI crude oil rose more than +6% to a 2-week high. Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed down more than -3%, and American Airlines Group (AAL), Southwest Airlines (LUV), and Carnival (CCL) closed down more than -2%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) andDelta Air Lines (DAL) closed down more than -1%.
Bloom Energy (BE) closed up more than +27% after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion from a prior forecast of $3.1 billion to $3.3 billion, above the consensus of $3.25 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) closed up more than +16% after reporting Q1 net sales of $1.06 billion, better than the consensus of $1.05 billion.
Rush Street Interactive (RSI) closed up more than +16% after forecasting full-year revenue between $1.49 billion and $1.54 billion, better than the consensus of $1.38 billion.

The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed kept monetary policy unchanged as expected, despite a record number of dissenting votes. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the conclusion of today’s policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.

Stocks Mixed After Fed Holds Rates Steady in Powell's Farewell

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.04%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.49%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.48%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.05%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are up +0.48%.
Stock indexes are mixed today, with the Dow Jones Industrials falling to a 1.5-week low. Soaring crude oil prices are lifting inflation expectations and bond yields and are negative for stocks. WTI crude oil climbed to a 2-week high today after the US signaled it will maintain its naval blockade of Iran for the foreseeable future. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump told his aides to prepare for an extended blockade and that it carries less of a risk for the US than resuming hostilities or walking away from the conflict without securing a deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield is up +5 bp to a 4-week high of 4.40%.

The Nasdaq 100 is higher today as technology stocks climb on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc are up more than +14% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after the close today, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Today’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +5% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the conclusion of today’s policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 199 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and is down -0.33%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average did not trade, as markets in Japan were closed for the Showa Day holiday.

June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -9 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +4.4 bp to 4.390%. Jun T-notes fell to a 4-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 4-week high of 4.402%. Stocks Pressured as Soaring Crude Prices Raise Inflation Concerns

Semiconductor stocks have been on a tear in 2026, as massive capital spending plans from hyperscalers fuel growth across the industry. Two of the top performers so far this year are Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) and Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU). The two chipmakers' stocks are up 93% and 74%, respectively, in 2026 as of this writing.
Investors looking at the semiconductor space may be weighing these two high-flying stocks against each other. Despite the massive run-up in both stocks' prices, one stands out as a better buy right now.

The custom AI chipmaker
Marvell makes optical networking chips and custom AI accelerators, commonly known as XPUs. It designs Microsoft's Maia chips and previously designed Amazon's Trainium chips. It also works closely with the other hyperscalers, Alphabet and Meta Platforms, for networking chips. Nvidia recently invested $2 billion in Marvell, ensuring its chips are compatible with its NVLink Fusion infrastructure for high-speed interconnect.
Marvell's networking chips have attracted significant attention in recent months as the need for high-speed data transfers between GPUs and AI accelerators has grown. Management expects its acquisition of Celestial AI, which specializes in optical interconnect for AI systems, to reach a $500 million annualized revenue run rate by 2028 and $1 billion by 2029.
But investors may still be underappreciating the XPU business. Microsoft has indicated it plans to use more of its next-generation Maia chips for its internal AI training and inference. That could result in a significant increase in Marvell's order volume in fiscal 2028. Additionally, The Information recently reported that Marvell is in talks with Google to develop a custom AI accelerator as an alternative to its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), developed by Broadcom. The talks also included a memory processor designed to work alongside Google's TPUs.
The investment from Nvidia is a further indication that the XPU business has legs, and Nvidia is looking to protect its GPU business against the competition. As such, it's no surprise that analysts expect earnings per share to climb from $3.83 this year to $7.50 two years from now. Marvell should be able to produce consistent share gains of data center server racks for years to come as it improves its networking chip capabilities and wins more sockets for its XPUs.
At a share price of $164, the stock trades for 42.5 times forward earnings, but that drops to 21.7 times earnings two years out.
The memory chipmaker
Micron is one of three major memory chipmakers benefiting from a massive supply shortage. One of the biggest bottlenecks in AI training and inference is memory, and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips packaged with GPUs and XPUs have seen increased demand as a result. But memory chipmakers, including Micron, have been slow to expand production capacity, as they don't want to oversupply the market. In the meantime, prices for memory chips have soared, as the market awaits additional capacity.
Capacity is coming. Micron plans to invest $25 billion in capital expenditures this year and at least $35 billion in 2027 to help meet the demand. Rival memory chipmakers SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are also spending heavily. Still, new fabs take years to ramp up production, so the supply shortage will likely last through 2027.
With higher chip prices, Micron has seen its profits soar. Pricing for its DRAM chips, the building blocks for HBM, climbed about 66% sequentially last quarter. Combined with a small increase in unit shipments, DRAM revenue climbed 74% sequentially and 207% year over year. The smaller NAND segment saw prices climb even faster, leading to 82% sequential growth. Gross margin was through the roof, climbing 18 percentage points to 75%.
Micron's set to see its earnings continue climbing over the next two years as pricing remains high and it's able to produce more units. However, the memory chip business is extremely cyclical. And the production capacity the entire industry's developing to meet demand today will eventually result in oversupply. That will lead to significantly higher overhead costs as pricing falls, resulting in much worse profit margins and a crash in earnings power. So, while analysts currently expect Micron's earnings per share to climb from $57.95 this year to $101.07 in two years, it could see a huge drop in earnings in 2029 as the supply/demand equilibrium shifts.
That's why investors are only paying 8.6 times earnings for Micron. But Micron has historically only traded at a P/E between 3 and 6 at the peak of its earnings cycle. The stock currently trades for close to 5 times 2028 earnings expectations. That suggests the stock might not climb much higher from here unless the demand cycle proves much larger than analysts expect. At their current stock prices, I'd rather buy Marvell, which should be able to produce more steady earnings growth at a fair price.

Marvell vs. Micron: Which AI Chipmaker Is the Better Buy Right Now?

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) holds roughly 85% to 92% of the artificial intelligence accelerator market today. That kind of dominance invites serious competition -- and in this case, much of it is coming from the very cloud giants currently paying Nvidia billions every quarter. The four major hyperscalers -- Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms -- are all aggressively developing custom AI silicon to reduce their dependence on any single supplier.
One company sitting at the center of that shift is Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL).

Why Marvell is different
Marvell Technology is not a brand most casual investors will recognize. It doesn't make consumer devices. It doesn't market to developers. But it does design some of the custom chips and connectivity fabric that allow modern AI data centers to function.
Its custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) business grew from near zero to $1.5 billion in annual revenue in a single fiscal year. The company has 18 design wins with hyperscalers, including Microsoft and Amazon, meaning it already sits inside the hardware stacks of some of the most aggressive AI infrastructure build-outs in the world.
This month, reports surfaced that Alphabet's Google is in talks with Marvell to co-develop two custom AI chips: a memory processing unit and a next-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for inference workloads. Marvell stock jumped more than 13% in a single session on that news. Critically, this isn't a one-time contract announcement. It is a signal that hyperscalers are turning to Marvell as a strategic co-design partner, not just a vendor.
The architecture of the opportunity
Why would Google, with one of the world's most sophisticated chip teams, need Marvell? Because building cutting-edge inference silicon while staying compatible with the broader Nvidia CUDA infrastructure requires a level of chip interconnect expertise that Marvell has spent decades building. Its PCIe, Ethernet, and photonic networking offerings tie into virtually every major AI infrastructure architecture.
In Marvell's fiscal 2026, which ended Jan. 31, its revenue grew by 42% to $8.2 billion. But management now expects to reach $15 billion in total sales in fiscal 2028, with top-line growth of more than 30% in the current year, and close to 40% in the next. The stock currently trades at around $152 per share -- down a bit from the all-time high it touched last week -- and analysts have been boosting their price targets recently in light of the Google news.
The company also recently acquired Celestial AI for $3.25 billion to bring its photonic interconnect technology in-house. This technology enables data to move between chips at the speed of light, which is the next binding constraint in multichip AI systems. That acquisition signals management is already thinking past the current generation of AI infrastructure.
Beyond raw speed, Celestial AI's photonic fabric is designed to break the so-called "memory wall" by delivering massive bandwidth and low-latency connections between processing chips and memory hardware. This lets AI systems more effectively scale across entire racks and clusters. In layman's terms, this means easy speed, easy speed, and more easy speed.
Is the "next Nvidia" just clickbait?
The "next Nvidia" framing isn't about Marvell unseating the GPU giant. Nvidia will likely remain the dominant processor provider in AI training for the foreseeable future, and the moat it enjoys due to the ubiquity of its CUDA software platform is genuinely deep. What the comparison is intended to reflect is the trajectory that I think Marvell is on. Like Nvidia, it started as a specialized niche supplier. Now, it too is earning design win after design win with the major hyperscalers, and eventually, it appears likely to become so deeply embedded in the infrastructure stack with its custom ASICs and photonic interconnect technology that it's effectively irreplaceable.
That's exactly what Nvidia did with gaming and then with data center GPUs.
Marvell stock is up over 80% over the last six months, but the combination of 18 hyperscaler design wins, a Google co-development partnership, photonic interconnect hardware, and 30%-plus projected annual growth makes Marvell Technology the most compelling AI play that most retail investors haven't discovered yet. Those with a long-term view should consider adding it to their portfolios.

Prediction: This Artificial Intelligence (AI) Chip Stock Will Become the Next Nvidia by 2030

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed down -0.49%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.05%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -1.01%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) fell -0.46%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) fell -0.94%.
Stock indexes settled lower on Tuesday, led by losses in technology stocks amid concerns that the massive investment in artificial intelligence will not pay off. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently failed to meet its goals for new users and sales, undercutting the shares of OpenAI partners and AI infrastructure stocks, including Nvidia, Oracle, Advanced Micro Devices, and CoreWeave.

On the positive side, Coca-Cola rose more than +3% to limit losses in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net revenue.
Stocks bounced from their worst levels on Tuesday amid better-than-expected US economic news. The Conference Board Apr consumer confidence index unexpectedly rose +0.6 to a 4-month high of 92.8, stronger than expectations of a decline to 89.0. Also, the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +3 to a 14-month high of 3, stronger than expectations of 1. In addition, the Feb S&P composite-20 home price index rose +0.90% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.12% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in more than 2.5 years.
Soaring crude oil prices are boosting inflation expectations, pushing bond yields higher, and weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil jumped to a 2-week high on Tuesday after the New York Times reported that President Trump is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. Mr. Trump has said any deal must include agreements to curb Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 3-week high of 4.38% on Tuesday. The 2-day FOMC meeting began on Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) rose by more than +3% on Tuesday as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Tuesday, 80% of the 172 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and closed down -0.41%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Tuesday closed down -5.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.0 bp to 4.350%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low on Tuesday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Tuesday’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices boosted inflation expectations and weighed on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% on Tuesday. Also, better-than-expected US economic news on Tuesday, including Apr consumer confidence and the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey, was bearish for T-note prices.
T-notes recovered from their worst level on Tuesday amid strong demand for the Treasury’s $44 billion auction of 7-year T-notes that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.51, above the 10-auction average of 2.50.
European government bond yields moved higher on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and finished up +3.4 bp to 3.067%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and finished up +3.4 bp to 5.006%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting an 11% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners retreated on Tuesday after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Digital (APLD), Applied Materials (AMAT), Sandisk (SNDK), CoreWeave (CRWV), and Vertiv Holdings (VRT) closed down more than -5%. Also, Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -4%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Micron Technology (MU), Marvell Technology (MRVL), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -3%. In addition, GE Vernova (GEV) and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -2%.
Mining stocks fell on Tuesday, amid the sell-off in gold, silver, and copper prices. Newmont Corp (NEM) and Coeur Mining (CDE) closed down more than -5%, and Anglogold Ashanti (AU), Southern Copper (SCCO), and Hecla Mining (HL) closed down more than -4%. Also, Barrick Mining (B) and Freeport McMoRan (FCX) closed down more than -3%.
Packaging stocks rose on Tuesday after Citigroup said Smurfit WestRock would raise US containerboard prices by $50 per ton, effective June 1. Packaging Corp of America (PKG) and International Paper (IP) closed up by more than +4%, and Smurfit Westrock Plc (SW) closed up more than +1%.
Rambus (RMBS) closed down more than -20% after reporting Q1 EPS of 55 cents, weaker than the consensus of 65 cents.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) closed down more than -12% after reporting Q1 operating income of $737 million, below the consensus of $787 million.
Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) closed down more than -11% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $671.0 million, weaker than the consensus of $692.7 million.
Qiagen NV (QGEN) closed down more than -10% after forecasting full-year CER net sales of up +1% to +2%, well below the consensus of +4.62%.
Pentair Plc (PNR) closed down more than -10% after forecasting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.47 to $1.50, below the consensus of $1.50.
Corning (GLW) closed down more than -8% after forecasting Q2 core EPS of 73 cents to 77 cents, the midpoint below the consensus of 76 cents.
Sherwin-Williams (SHW) closed down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $11.50 to $11.90, the midpoint below the consensus of $11.72, and saying it sees little chance of end-market recovery this year due to weak consumer sentiment.
United Parcel Service (UPS) closed down more than -3% after leaving its full-year financial guidance unchanged despite reporting better-than-expected Q1 sales and profit.
Centene (CNC) closed up more than +13% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $49.94 billion, above the consensus of $47.41 billion, and raising its full-year revenue forecast to $187.5 billion to $191.5 billion from $186.5 billion to $190.5 billion, the midpoint above the consensus of $188.79 billion.
Franklin Resources (BEN) closed up more than +6% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of 71 cents, stronger than the consensus of 55 cents.
Nucor (NUE) closed up more than +4% after reporting Q1 net sales of $9.50 billion, stronger than the consensus of $8.87 billion.
Coca-Cola (KO) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q1 net revenue of $12.50 billion, better than the consensus of $12.25 billion.
Dynatrace (DT) closed up more than +1% after the Wall Street Journal reported that Starboard Value LP took a stake in the company and is pushing the company to better capitalize on the shift to AI.

The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 150 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and is down -0.26%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +2.8 bp to 4.368%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low today, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Today’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices is boosting inflation expectations and weighing on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% today. Also, better-than-expected US economic news today on Apr consumer confidence and the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey were bearish for T-note prices. In addition, supply pressures are undercutting T-note prices, as the Treasury will auction $30 billion of 2-year floating rate notes and $44 billion of 7-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and is up +4.0 bp to 3.073%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and is up +4.4 bp to 5.016%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting a 13% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.

AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners are retreating today after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) is down more than -8% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Digital (APLD), Sandisk (SNDK), and Vertiv Holdings (VRT) are down more than -6%. Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Applied Materials (AMAT), Micron Technology (MU), CoreWeave (CRWV), GE Vernova (GEV), and Lam Research (LRCX) are down more than -5%, and Western Digital (WDC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and KLA Corp (KLAC) are down more than -4%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA) is down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials.

Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) is down more than -10% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $671.0 million, weaker than the consensus of $692.7 million.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) is down more than -10% after reporting Q1 operating income of $737 million, below the consensus of $787 million.
Qiagen NV (QGEN) is down more than -9% after forecasting full-year CER net sales of up +1% to +2%, well below the consensus of +4.62%.
Corning (GLW) is down more than -8% after forecasting Q2 core EPS of 73 cents to 77 cents, the midpoint below the consensus of 76 cents.

AI Fears and Surging Crude Oil Prices Weigh on Stocks

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.38%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.25%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -0.78%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.44%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are down -0.83%.
Stock indexes are mostly lower today, led by losses in technology stocks amid concerns that the massive investment in artificial intelligence will not pay off. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently failed to meet its goals for new users and sales, undercutting the shares of OpenAI partners and AI infrastructure stocks, including Nvidia, Oracle, Advanced Micro Devices, and CoreWeave.

On the positive side, Coca-Cola is up more than +5% to lead the Dow Jones Industrials higher after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net revenue.
Soaring crude oil prices are also boosting inflation expectations, pushing bond yields higher and weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil jumped to a 2-week high today after the New York Times reported that President Trump is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. Mr. Trump has said any deal must include agreements to curb Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 3-week high of 4.38% today ahead of the start of the 2-day FOMC meeting, where the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged.

Poet's crash today crushed last week's gains
Poet Technologies stock roared higher last week on news that the optics-tech specialist had secured a major new contract expansion. In an interview with Stocktwits, Poet CFO Thomas Mika seemingly confirmed that his company had landed an expanded contract with Celestial AI -- a company that had been acquired by Marvell in February. Mika's comments suggested that the order amount was now above the $5 million level that previously been more opaquely disclosed in an earlier announcement, but huge gains for Poet stock were erased following news Marvell had moved to cancel the order.
Is Poet stock a buy on the pullback?
Poet stock's incredible volatility over the last week reflects just how speculative the company's outlook is, and the evaporation of the expected order connected to Marvell is a sign that most investors should stay away from the stock right now.
