Meta (META) Q1 2026 Earnings Call Transcript

Wednesday, April 29th, 2026
“Thank you very much, everyone,” Fed Chair Jerome Powell said to the press corps following the latest FOMC decision, to light applause, “I won’t see you next time.” With that, the Fed Chair changes hands to former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh for the next FOMC meeting in June. As expected, no change was made to the 3.50-3.75% Fed funds rate, just as it has been since December of last year.
The economy continues to expand at a “solid rate,” as stated in the FOMC release prior to Powell’s press conference, with unemployment little changed. Stephen Miran, as expected, was the lone policy dissenter — advising yet another 25 basis-point (bps) cut on interest rates. Fed Presidents Hammack, Kashkari and Logan dissented on the opposite side of sentiment: they did not want to keep language regarding a bias toward easing, as has been the case for quite some time.
Powell spoke to this in the presser, citing that “the center is moving toward a more neutral place,” despite Miran’s opinion to the contrary. The Iran war is contributing to a “high level of uncertainty” regarding the economy going forward, with higher global energy prices adding to inflation pressure. This is reminiscent of tariff inflation from a year ago, which Powell today said he expects will subside over the course of this year.
The burning question on the lips of many in the press corps was answered by Powell before the Q&A period began: he would be staying on as Fed Governor instead of retiring, and will not leave the board until investigations and legal actions taken against him by the Trump administration are truly over, “with finality and transparency.” Currently there is some question whether the Inspector General will reopen this investigation.
In his demure manner, Powell went further than at any time previously in describing what is at stake with the Fed’s independence: legal actions are “battering the institution,” Fed independence is what “separates successful countries from unsuccessful ones,” and “if we had acted politically, we would have no credibility.” The outgoing Fed chair said it is not his intention to interfere with the incoming Fed alignment, and that he will remain on until he finds it “appropriate to leave.”
Heavyweights of AI Report Astounding Earnings, Growth
There’s no other way to describe this afternoon’s earnings results than “gargantuan.” The biggest of the big AI players are beginning to show results of their capital expenditures over the past couple years, and the numbers are astounding.
Microsoft MSFT was the tamest of the lot, with fiscal Q3 earnings per share of $4.27 outperforming expectations by two solid dimes, for a +23.4% positive earnings surprise. Revenues of $82.89 billion easily surpassed the $81.40 billion anticipated. But shares are still -2% on the news, as heavy capex is keeping the stock trading down -14% year to date. Its Business Software unit grew +17% year over year and Azure was +40% (still slightly below their “whisper number”), so you can see the results AI is having for the company already.
Alphabet GOOGL shares are up +5.8% on its Q1 report this afternoon, with earnings of $2.81 per share outpacing the $2.64 projected on +22% revenue growth to $109.9 billion (minus Traffic Acquisition Costs [TAC], as Zacks prefers to report it, this figure reaches $96.2 billion, ahead of the $92.2 billion expected). Services were up +16%, including Search +16% and YouTube +11% in the quarter, but it was Cloud that really saw a huge jump: +63% in revenues to $20 billion, with its AI Gemini unit +40% quarter over quarter.
Amazon AMZN blew the doors off earnings expectations in its Q1 report this afternoon: $2.78 per share versus the $1.60 estimate on $181.5 billion in revenues, up from $177.8 billion in the Zacks consensus. AWS demonstrated its fastest growth in 15 quarters, +28% to $37.6 billion, while operating cash flow rose +30% to $148.5 billion. Yet its extraordinary capex spending — upwards of $200 billion — is giving investors some sticker shock, sending shares down -3.8% in after-hours trading.
Meta Platforms META put up the biggest earnings surprise of them all in its Q1 report after the close: $10.44 per share, crushing the $6.71 estimate and +62% year over year on $56.31 billion in revenues surpassing the $55.49 billion expected, +33% year over year. Yet revenues for next quarter are being guided relatively in-line with earlier estimates while, again, extraordinary capex spending is sending shares -6.7% in the after-market, swinging to negative growth in share price year-to-date.

Broadcom’s AVGO Semiconductor business is benefiting from the strong AI revenues, which surged 106% year over year in the first quarter of fiscal 2026. AI networking revenues grew 60% year over year and represented one-third of AI revenues. The company continues to gain market share in AI networking, driven by strong adoption of Tomahawk 6 switch as well as Broadcom’s 200G SerDes, which are capturing demand from hyperscalers.
Tomahawk 6 family switch series is now shipping in production volume. Tomahawk 6 doubles the throughput of its predecessor, Tomahawk 5, and is highly optimized for scale-out and scale-up AI networks used for training and inference. Tomahawk 6 delivers exceptional flexibility with support for 100G and 200G SerDes. It provides one of the industry’s most comprehensive sets of AI routing capabilities and interconnect options, built to handle the demand of AI clusters scaling beyond one million custom accelerators (XPUs).
An expanding portfolio bodes well for Broadcom’s prospects. The company has introduced 3.5D XPU, 102.4T Ethernet switches with co-packaged optics, 400G/lane optical DSPs, 200G/lane Ethernet retimers and AECs, and PCIe Gen6 connectivity solutions. AVGO has also extended a partnership with Meta Platforms META under which the companies will co-develop multiple generations of META’s custom AI chips (MTIA). AVGO will provide its XPU platform and advanced networking technologies to help Meta Platforms build a high-performance AI infrastructure. The partnership includes an initial deployment exceeding 1 gigawatt of computing capacity, with plans to scale to multiple gigawatts over time.
Broadcom expects a positive second-quarter fiscal 2026 performance, with AI revenues of $10.7 billion, suggesting a 140% year-over-year upsurge. AI networking is expected to accelerate in the second quarter of fiscal 2026 and grow to 40% of the total AI revenues. Semiconductor revenues are expected to be $14.8 billion, indicating 76% year-over-year growth. Broadcom expects revenues of $22 billion, indicating 47% year-over-year growth for the second quarter of fiscal 2026. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for revenues is currently pegged at $22.04 billion, suggesting 46.9% growth from the figure reported in the year-ago quarter.
AVGO Faces Tough Competition in the Semiconductor Market
Broadcom is facing stiff competition from NVIDIA NVDA and Advanced Micro Devices AMD in the semiconductor space.
NVIDIA is benefiting from the strong growth of AI and high-performance accelerated computing. The growing demand for generative AI and large language models using GPUs based on NVIDIA’s Hopper and Blackwell architectures is aiding data center revenues. The launch of the Instinct MI350 series that supports deployments powered by AMD CPUs, GPUs and NICs has strengthened AMD’s system-level capabilities.

For the past 175 years, Corning (NYSE: GLW) has manufactured glass for everything from Thomas Edison's original lightbulb to Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone. However, Wall Street is focused on the company for a different reason right now.
Corning is one of the optical fiber industry's leading innovators, and it developed a series of cables that can transmit information much faster than traditional copper alternatives. They are in extremely high demand in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, where data center operators are doing everything they can to increase processing speeds.

As a result, Corning stock is sitting on a 74% gain this year already, so it's obliterating other semiconductor stocks, including Nvidia, Broadcom, and Advanced Micro Devices, which have returned between 14% and 51% so far. Corning just released its earnings report for the first quarter of 2026 (ended March 31), and it included two new deals with major AI hyperscale customers, which could fuel even more upside in its stock from here.
Corning just signed two more blockbuster deals
Nvidia supplies the best graphics processing units (GPUs) for data centers, which are the primary chips used in AI development. Its customers typically configure them in the company's NV-Link 72 rack, which includes 72 GPUs, 36 central processors (CPUs), and various networking components. The rack is connected using around two miles of copper cable, but data center operators are gradually shifting to fiber instead.
Fiber-optic cables can transmit information much faster, and over much longer distances than copper, with minimal data loss. Corning recently released a new product called Multicore Fiber (MCF), which packs four cores into a standard 125-micron strand of fiber. Since MCF has 4 times the density of a single-core solution, data center operators can achieve the same performance with 75% fewer cables.
This could lead to better processing speeds and substantial cost savings for both data center operators and AI developers.
In January, Facebook parent Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) signed an agreement to buy $6 billion worth of Corning's optical fiber over the next few years, which it will use in its AI data centers. In March, Corning broke ground on a brand-new factory where it will manufacture cables specifically for Meta, which highlights the scale of the deal.
During his April 28 conference call with investors recapping Corning's first-quarter operating results, CEO Wendell Weeks said the company signed two more long-term deals with hyperscale customers. He said they are of similar size and scope to the Meta agreement, so they could be worth billions of dollars over the next few years.
Corning's AI-related revenue is accelerating
Corning's optical communications business generated $1.8 billion in revenue during the first quarter of 2026. It represented year-over-year growth of 36%, which was an acceleration from the 35% growth the segment delivered in the fourth quarter of 2025 three months earlier. It was the largest of Corning's five business units, which combined to generate $4.3 billion in core revenue overall for the quarter.
The blistering demand for optical fiber has given Corning an incredible amount of pricing power, which is boosting its profit margins. The enterprise communications segment generated $387 million in net income during the first quarter, which was up by an eye-popping 93% from the year-ago period. It accounted for over half of Corning's total core net income of $612 million, which highlights what an impact AI had on its business overall.
Corning stock could be a solid long-term buy
Corning produced non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings of $2.69 per share over the past four quarters, placing its stock at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 57.7. Nvidia, Broadcom, and AMD trade at P/E ratios of 44.6, 55, and 77.5, respectively, so Corning stock is roughly in the middle of the pack.
However, Wall Street expects Corning to grow its earnings to $3.94 per share in 2027, placing its stock at a forward P/E ratio of just 38.8.That leaves room for upside over the next 18 months or so, but long-term investors will probably reap the biggest rewards from here, because Weeks predicts the market for data center optical fiber could triple in the coming years thanks to AI-related demand.

This Super Semiconductor Stock Is Obliterating Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom in 2026

Wednesday, April 29th, 2026
President Trump continues his tough talk on his social media platform Truth Social this morning, which can be understood at this stage in the two-month war that negotiations are currently static. But for once, there may be something even bigger than the Strait of Hormuz affecting investors’ attitudes (even with Brent crude back up to $115 per barrel): in aggregate, this may be the biggest day ofstock market newsso far in 2026.
Not only is today the final Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decision under Fed Chair Jerome Powell — Kevin Warsh will replace him for the FOMC’s June meeting — but four of the “Magnificent 7” stocks will report quarterly earnings after the closing bell. The FOMC is 100% likely to keep the 3.50-3.75% Fed funds rate steady, as it has been since December of last year. For the “Mag 7” stocks, capital outlays toward AI investment will be closely watched.
Not only that, but we also see dozens of important companies reporting Q1 earnings before and after the bell that are unrelated to the AI trade, such as Phillips 66 in the early AM and Ford F, Qualcomm QCOM and Chipotle CMG this afternoon. Also, a plethora of economic reports greet us an hour before the opening bell.
Fresh Data for March: Durable Goods, Housing Starts & More
We see some unexpectedly strong economic growth numbers from March this morning, and we’ll start by discussing Durable Goods Orders: +0.8% is 4x what analysts had been expecting, the first positive print in the past four months, and the highest since +5.4% in November of last year. This follows an unrevised -1.4% from February.
Ex-Transportation, we see this bump up to +0.9%, and non-Defense, ex-aircraft — a proxy for “regular” enterprise spending — we see the biggest jump in almost six years: +3.3%. We can trace this boom to AI infrastructure spending, with the AI equipment segment up big: +3.7%. At least we’re beginning to see the results of AI investment make its way into metrics not directly associated with Big Tech “hyperscalers.”
Housing Starts for March jumped to their highest levels since December 2024 this morning: +1.502 million seasonally adjusted, annualized units was way up from the downwardly revised +1.36 million reported for February. For the first time since September of 2022, we saw a “5-handle” on 30-year fixed mortgage rates (+5.98%), and homebuilders responded in a big way.
Conversely, Building Permits — a proxy for March came down to +1.372 million seasonally adjusted, annualized units from February’s big jump to +1.54 million, and the lowest figure since August of last year. March is a key month here: that’s when the bombings of Iran started. Even though homebuilders were gaining momentum on lowered mortgage rates, uncertainty due to the war saw Permits — which usually go up in the spring months — take a tumble.
The Advanced U.S. Trade Deficit came in slightly lower than expectations: -$87.9 billion. This is the deepest level of 2026 so far, but still thankfully well off the all-time low -$135 billion we saw in March of 2025, directly before President Trump’s “Liberation Day” of massive global tariffs (which lasted one week).
Preliminary numbers on Advanced Retail Inventories blossomed to +0.7% in March from +0.1% expected, while Wholesale Inventories jumped +100 basis points (bps) from expectations to +1.4%, and 50 bps above the previous month’s +0.9%. These are both metrics that will add to quarterly GDP, albeit the “worst” sort of economic growth, as it anticipates sales that may or may not materialize.
Q1 Earnings at a Glance: PSX, ABBV, BIIB & Mag 7 Later
This may be the longest word-count for “Ahead of Wall Street” on record, as we’re just now getting to Q1 earnings ahead of the open. With this in mind, we’ll merely spot-check some key earnings data this morning:
Big Pharma mainstay AbbVie ABBV beat estimates by 3 cents per share to $2.65 on its bottom line and bumped up its guidance, but shares are flat on the news, even after falling -13% year to date.
Oil refiner Phillips 66 PSX posted a huge +189% earnings beat — +$0.49 per share versus -$0.55 in the Zacks consensus — on higher refining margins, largely based on oil price hikes from the Iran war. These shares are flat, as well, but +28% year to date.
Biotech giant Biogen BIIB posted a +21% earnings beat this morning — $3.57 per share versus $2.95 anticipated — while also outperforming on its top line. Shares are up +2% on the news, adding to the stock’s +4% growth from the start of the year.
After the closing bell today, Microsoft MSFT is expected to have growth +17.6% on its bottom line and +16.2% on its top. Meta Platforms META looks to have grown +4.35% on year-over-year earnings and +31.15% on revenues. Amazon AMZN anticipates a more modest +0.63% earnings growth and +14.24% on the top line. Alphabet GOOGL, with its massive capex spending on AI infrastructure, is projected to come in -6% on earnings and +20.6% on revenues.
