Some of these stocks get huge headlines daily
It's hard to call the world's largest company by market cap overlooked, so Nvidia is out for my list. Apple products are front of mind for many consumers, and it's a well-publicized company, so it's also eliminated. Furthermore, Apple's artificial intelligence (AI) strategy has been relatively weak, so I'd hesitate to call it an AI company. Alphabet has seen its shares rally massively over the past year thanks to its comeback in the generative AI world, and Gemini is among the top options available, so I wouldn't consider it overlooked, either.
Meta Platforms and Tesla are both trying to position themselves as AI-first companies, although their adoption of AI shows up in different ways. Tesla is integrating AI in its vehicles through autonomous driving and also has other exciting offerings in the works, like its Optimus robot. Meta is working on several AI products, as well as integrating the technology into its social media platforms. Both of these are well-known in the AI realm and don't qualify as "overlooked."
That leaves Microsoft and Amazon as the last two, and I think AI investors need to take another look at them.
Amazon and Microsoft are making money from AI right now
While Amazon and Microsoft are both integrating AI into their everyday inner workings, the real money maker is cloud computing. Amazon and Microsoft are in first and second place in terms of cloud computing market share, and each is seeing huge growth in this sector. During the fourth quarter, Microsoft Azure's revenue rose 39% year over year. Amazon Web Services (AWS) didn't have as fast a growth rate, rising 24%. However, that growth rate was its best quarter in over three years.
These businesses are cash cows, and with insatiable AI demand, both Microsoft and Amazon are understandably spending billions of dollars on data centers to meet that demand. Once the money has been spent to bring the new computing infrastructure online, each company will be able to generate high-margin revenue that boosts profitability. While each company has a different primary business they're known for, their cloud computing segments are a good enough reason to buy their stocks.
On another note, both stocks trade at a discount to recent levels.
Since 2024, these two have consistently traded with a forward price-to-earnings ratio -- based on estimates -- in the low-30s. Now, they trade at a decent discount to those levels. If you've been waiting to buy these two, there has seldom been a better opportunity over the past few years to scoop up these stocks.
Businesses haven't even scratched the surface of what's possible with AI. According to research done by The Motley Fool, less than 20% of businesses currently use AI. That number should skyrocket over the next few years and drive demand for cloud computing services from these two. Right now is a golden buying opportunity, and investors shouldn't squander it.

Many of these investing giants have been piling into AI stocks.
There are many paths to a billion-dollar portfolio, meaning billionaires don't always agree when it comes to investment opportunities. Even if it's clear that the area of artificial intelligence (AI) has a bright future, billionaire hedge fund managers may choose different paths to an AI win. One may pile into Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), for example, while another sells shares of this AI chip giant.
But, from time to time, these investing experts see eye to eye and make similar moves. And this is exactly what happened in the fourth quarter of last year. Billionaires David Tepper of Appaloosa Management and Michael Platt of Bluecrest Capital Management each sold shares of Nvidia and bought an AI stock that's soared 40,000% since its initial public offering. Let's check out the details.

A look at 13F filings
So, first, a quick note on how we know about these billionaires' moves. On a quarterly basis, managers of more than $100 million in stocks must report their activity to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Form 13F. These forms are available for the public to see, so we may get a glimpse into the latest moves of these investing experts.
Tepper and Platt, like many other billionaires, have been investing in AI stocks; Tepper may be the most aggressive here, though, as his top five holdings, from Alibaba to Meta Platforms, are heavily involved in AI. Platt's biggest stock positions are in finance and energy. Both billionaires made two similar moves in the latest quarter, however...
Tepper, who oversees $6.9 billion, cut his position in Nvidia by 10%, and it now makes up 4.6% of his portfolio. He's held the stock since the first quarter of 2023.
Platt, who manages $3.3 billion, slashed Nvidia by 96%, and the stock now makes up only 0.2% of his portfolio. He's held Nvidia shares since the second quarter of last year.
Tepper increased his position in Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) by 200%, and it now accounts for 6.2% of his portfolio. He's held the stock since the second quarter of 2023.
Platt opened a new position in Micron, and it represents about 0.1% of his portfolio.
A better growth buy
As always with 13F filings, we don't know the exact reason behind the investors' moves. But these decisions by Tepper and Platt suggest the billionaires believe Micron will deliver growth as the next stages of the AI story unfold -- and potentially represent a better growth buy than Nvidia. It's also important to note that these moves took place a few months ago, and the billionaires' views or strategies may have changed in more recent times.
Still, it's fair to say that Micron, a leader in the AI memory and storage space, could deliver significant earnings growth in the coming quarters. Micron's products may be popular among AI customers during this next stage of AI growth, as AI is more regularly applied to real-world problems. To make this happen, models go through inference or a "thinking" process that allows them to develop answers and solutions. And to do this, they will need a lot of memory.
Micron's record earnings
In the most recent period, Micron offered us a preview of this trend, with revenue reaching record levels, and the company expects more records in the next reporting period. Micron says AI demand is driving this momentum.
So, should you follow billionaires Tepper and Platt and opt for Micron shares over Nvidia? This depends on your investment strategy and current AI holdings. If you've already held Nvidia stock for a while and are looking for another high-potential stock, you might favor buying Micron right now. The stock trades at only 11x forward earnings estimates, compared with 20x or higher for many other AI stocks.
That said, like the billionaires, you might want to hold onto some Nvidia shares as the AI giant is likely to keep delivering significant growth as this AI boom marches on.

Vistra sees long-term growth in serving hyperscalers
Vistra is the largest unregulated power producer in the U.S., and partners with Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) to help them meet their power needs. The Texas-based company generates 44,000 megawatts (MW) of energy through nuclear, natural gas, coal, and battery energy storage facilities. Its shares are down by a little more than 1% so far in 2026, but are up more than 46% over the past year.
In 2025, Vistra's revenue rose 2.9% to $17.7 billion, thanks to an AI-driven surge in electricity demand from data centers. Net income fell 52.5% to $233 million due to higher interest expenses and costs related to recent acquisitions.
The company is expected to close its $4 billion deal to buy Cogentrix Energy later this year, adding roughly 5,500 MW of natural gas-fueled generation capacity. It closed a 2,600 MW acquisition from Lotus Infrastructure Partners in November for $1.9 billion.
For 2026, management is guiding for adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of $6.8 billion to $7.6 billion, which would be a 22% increase at the midpoint. Analysts currently project a one-year earnings per share (EPS) growth rate exceeding 230% as the company's newer nuclear agreements and natural gas expansions in the Permian Basin come online.
The company has a 20-year agreement to provide Amazon Web Services with up to 1,200 MW of electricity from its Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant, and a similar deal to provide 2,600 MW to Meta from a trio of nuclear plants.
One of the more subtle reasons to buy Vistra is its dividend. Thanks to the stock's rise, the yield has fallen from the 2.2% to 3.5% range it lived in just a few years ago to around 0.6% currently. However, the company has raised its payouts (admittedly, by small increments) for 17 consecutive quarters. Despite those increases, the payout ratio is only 41.2%, leaving it room for further dividend hikes.
Constellation Energy could be a star performer
Constellation, based in Baltimore, is the largest regulated producer of nuclear energy in the U.S., as well as the largest generator of carbon-free energy. Its revenue should grow, thanks in part to long-term deals with Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Meta. The stock is up more than 49% over the past year, though down more than 14% so far in 2026.
In the fourth quarter, its adjusted operating EPS rose 8% year over year to $9.39, and revenue rose 12.9% to $6.07 billion.
Constellation has already made a big acquisition this year, buying Calpine, known for its natural gas and geothermal power facilities, for $16.4 billion. The company said the move will be accretive to its adjusted operating EPS by more than 20% in 2026 and add at least $2 to EPS in future years.
Also driving revenue growth will be its planned restart of the Unit 1 reactor at the Crane Clean Energy Center, formerly known as the Three Mile Island nuclear facility. With the aid of a $1 billion Department of Energy loan and a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft, the project is expected to generate 835 MW. The company has a similar 20-year deal in the works with Meta for power from the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois.

Meta launches four new chips
On Wednesday, Meta unveiled four new artificial intelligence chips: The MTIA 300, MTIA 400, MTIA 450, and the MTIA 500.
The 300 is optimized for Meta's core ranking & recommendation (R&R) workloads, which were Meta's dominant workload before generative AI. The 400, 450, and 500 are each for different types of inference workloads. The 400 can implement larger generative AI models for traditional R&R applications. The 450 then augments the 400's capabilities by doubling the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) capacity, and the 500 takes the 450's HBM higher by another 50% on top of that.
Meta disclosed that while the 300 is in use now, the 400, 450, and 500 will be rolled out beginning in early 2027 for generative AI inference. Meta also elaborated on its chip design strategy, noting it uses a "modular" approach that enables it to iterate on new chip designs every six months, rather than the typical two-year cadence. Meta believes this is a necessity, given the rapid pace of AI evolution today:
Rather than placing a bet and waiting for a long period of time, we deliberately take an iterative approach: Each MTIA generation builds on the last, using modular chiplets, incorporating the latest AI workload insights and hardware technologies, and deploying on a shorter cadence. This tighter loop keeps our hardware better aligned with evolving models while enabling faster adoption of new technology.
Like other major cloud companies, Meta is using Broadcom to manufacture and package parts of its chips.
Broadcom says XPUs are on the rise versus GPUs
Broadcom counts Meta as one of its five major XPU customers, to which it supplies SerDes components that connect the chip logic to the networking fabric. At the same time, Broadcom also handles packaging and other elements, ensuring these self-designed chips are manufacturable.
Broadcom held its quarterlyearnings calllast week, during which CEO Hock Tan elaborated on the current trend toward XPUs over graphics processing units (GPUs), noting that as AI workloads evolve, chips require greater specialization for each step in the AI training and inference processes:
The one-size-fits-all general-purpose GPU gets you only that far. ... In a GPU, you have a design for dense matrix multiplication. So you do it with software kernels, but it is not as effective as if you hard-coded it in silicon and make those XPUs purposely designed to be much more performing for mixture-of-experts workloads. The same applies for inference. ... And the design starts to depart from what is the traditional standard GPU design. Which is why, as we always indicated before, XPUs will eventually be more the choice simply because it will allow flexibility in making designs that work with particular workloads -- one for training even and one for inference. ... You can tweak your XPUs toward a particular kind of workload LLM that you want. And we are seeing that. We are seeing that road map in all our five customers.
Should Nvidia investors be worried?
As the AI computing industry evolves toward pre-training, post-training, reinforcement learning, and inference for diverse applications, is Nvidia in danger of losing market share? After all, Nvidia did shell out $20 billion for the intellectual property and engineering talent of inference chip start-up Groq late last year. That may indicate that Nvidia sees emerging demand for non-GPU chips as the industry pivots, as Hock Tan described.
That being said, Nvidia investors shouldn't necessarily panic. Even as the inference market is becoming more competitive, Nvidia still has a strong lead in training, and investment in training infrastructure will continue to grow.
Look no further than Meta itself for evidence. Despite unveiling new chips last week, Meta inked a massive, multiyear deal with Nvidia last month to deploy literally millions of Nvidia Blackwell and Rubin chips in its data centers, along with Nvidia central processing units (CPUs), all connected via Nvidia's SpectrumX ethernet switches.
So, even Meta's new chip designs haven't enabled it to stop buying Nvidia infrastructure.
Meta has legacy businesses across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and its Reality Labs segments, but it is also building its own Llama family of large language models (LLMs). So, Meta may be deploying Nvidia for its LLM efforts and frontier AI research, while the homegrown chips can more efficiently serve its legacy business footprint with optimized solutions.
But the big picture is that AI computing demand is still growing exponentially. That means the emergence of new inference chipmakers won't cause traditional training-focused GPUs to decline; rather, these new types of chips should be incremental and not displace Nvidia GPUs.
In this case, it appears the rising tide of AI compute truly lifts all boats.

Meta Platforms Just Unveiled Its New AI Chips. Should Nvidia Investors Be Worried?

Nuclear power plant upstart Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) is off to a slow start in 2026. Its shares are down more than 18% year to date compared to a decline of about 3% for the S&P 500. There are several scenarios, however, in which Oklo's shares could outperform the S&P 500 this year.
Oklo's Aurora powerhouses are small modular reactors (SMRs) that use recycled nuclear fuel and are designed to operate for up to 10 years before needing refueling. Demand for nuclear power is growing, thanks both to President Donald Trump's emphasis on the technology and the nation's rising power needs, which are largely being driven by the rapid buildout of electricity-hungry artificial intelligence data centers.

There are good reasons why investors may be wary about the stock. Oklo is a pre-revenue company, and as such, its volatility is through the roof. Its shares have ranged over the past two years between $17.42 and $193.84. However, here are four reasons why Oklo should outperform the S&P 500 this year.
It should add more contracts to its deal with Meta
On Jan. 9, Meta Platforms signed a deal with Oklo under which the tech giant will support the smaller company's effort to deploy a 1.2 gigawatt (GW) power campus in Pike County, Ohio. That campus will generate power for Meta's data centers in the region. By prepaying for that power, Meta will fund the project's progress. The day the deal was announced, Oklo's shares jumped by nearly $8 to close at $105.31.
Oklo has an 18 GW pipeline. If it can sign additional deals with hyperscalers or similar partners, analysts' and investors' opinions of the stock would rise considerably.
One possible customer is Oracle, which has stated its desire to build data center campuses with space for small nuclear reactors on site. Oracle's Stargate collaboration with OpenAI in Texas will require ample gigawatts, and Oklo's Aurora powerhouse would be a logical choice for the behind-the-meter SMR deployment Oracle would prefer. Oracle recently disputed reports that the project was stalled, but even if it is, Meta has shown an interest in stepping in and using the data center, and it already has a relationship with Oklo.
It is in a strong financial position
Oklo's war chest is quite impressive for a company that is currently pre-revenue. Its financial strategy has shifted from a lean start-up to a well-capitalized industrial player, largely thanks to successful capital raises throughout 2025, with a secondary public offering in June and an ATM equity program it rolled out in December.
The company ended the third quarter with $1.2 billion in cash and marketable securities on its books. It also has little long-term debt, which gives it a big advantage over its competitors in the current higher-interest-rate environment.
Based on management's guidance for an annual operating cash burn of $65 million to $80 million, the company has more than 10 years of runway if its spending remains stable. Now, Oklo will likely start to spend more money when it begins construction on its 1.2 GW power campus, but that will also be its first step toward developing long-term revenue streams. The company lost $29.7 million in the third quarter.
Oklo will deliver its fourth-quarter results on March 17, and any good news that report brings could help the stock as well.
The Aurora powerhouse could receive accelerated approval
In November, the Department of Energy approved the Nuclear Safety Design Agreement for Oklo's Aurora Fuel Fabrication Facility at Idaho National Laboratory. That's a big step, and if the Nuclear Regulatory Commission grants accelerated approval for the Aurora powerhouse at the laboratory, it would signal to the markets that the company's technology is valid.
It has already broken ground on the Idaho site. Now, Oklo must wade through the regulatory process, including regulatory pre-application and licensing submissions.
The price of oil will likely remain high

Hyperscalers that are relying heavily on natural gas generation to meet their electricity needs face financial risks.
Oklo's model is to own its reactors and sell the electricity they generate through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs). That strategy gives their customers a fixed price for 20 years. It's a model that's looking increasingly attractive to clients as oil and natural gas prices rise.
Hyperscalers aren't the only potential clients for Oklo. Industrial companies that use oil or natural gas for "process heat" (such as chemical plants or refineries) are more likely to see the appeal in switching to Oklo's high-temperature fast reactors when their current fuel bills double.

The semiconductor and data center specialist has a market capitalization of $1.6 trillion (as of this writing), so investors who buy Broadcom right now are looking at potential returns of 91% if the company joins the $3 trillion club. I believe that day is fast approaching.
AI is just the beginning
One of the biggest byproducts of the rapid adoption of AI has been the ongoing expansion of data centers needed to support the technology. While Broadcom is widely known for its semiconductors, the company is also a supplier of networking components and accessories that are critical to the operation of data centers.
The biggest contributor to the company's recent success has been the unrelenting demand for its Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). These specialized chips can be customized to be more efficient in specific use cases.
As cloud and data center operators look to rein in costs, ASICs have emerged as a viable alternative to Nvidia's flagship graphics processing units (GPUs), which are the gold standard and currently underpin the AI data center market. Google, for example, relies on Broadcom to design and manufacture the high-performance cores at the heart of its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). The company is also developing a custom AI accelerator for Meta Platforms.
The results are undeniable
Broadcom's financial results tell the tale. In its fiscal 2026 first quarter (ended Feb. 1), the company generated record revenue of $19.3 billion, up 29% year over year, driving adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.05, a 28% increase.
Management believes the company's growth will continue to accelerate. For the second quarter, Broadcom is guiding for revenue of $22 billion, which would represent an increase of nearly 47%, fueling adjusted EBITDA of $15 billion, up 50%.
Broadcom's mathematical path to $3 trillion
Wall Street expects Broadcom to generate revenue of nearly $105 billion in fiscal 2026, giving the stock a forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 15. Assuming its P/S ratio remains constant, the company will need to generate revenue of $200 billion to support a $3 trillion market cap.
As the chart above illustrates, Wall Street predicts Broadcom's revenue will grow to $196 billion by 2028, putting it within striking distance of the $200 million needed for a $3 trillion market cap. However, Broadcom's tendency to beat analysts' consensus estimates and raise its guidance is well-documented, so it will likely reach that benchmark even sooner.
The data center boom continues to gain momentum, with global capital expenditures expected to reach roughly $7 trillion by 2030, according to global management consultants McKinsey & Company. As a leading supplier of data center components and infrastructure, Broadcom is well-positioned to benefit from this trend. Moreover, ASICs are increasingly viewed as a viable, less expensive alternative to GPUs, thereby increasing Broadcom's opportunity.
Despite the blistering rise in its stock price, Broadcom still trades at 30 times forward earnings. Valuing the stock using the more appropriate price/earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio yields a multiple of 0.44, when any number less than 1 is the standard for an undervalued stock.
Given the available evidence, I think it's clear that Broadcom stock is a buy -- before it joins the $3 trillion club.

1 Unstoppable Stock To Buy Right Now Before It Soars 91% to Join Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, and Microsoft in the $3 Trillion Club

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) leads the pack in terms of data center computing hardware. Per IOT Analytics' estimates, Nvidia controls a 92% share of the market. That makes all the major artificial intelligence (AI) models dependent upon Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) to a high degree.
OpenAI, Anthropic, and more all need the company's products, and Nvidia has profited handsomely from it. Today, it's the world's most valuable company by market cap.

But, as the saying goes, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Nvidia has competitors like Alphabet with its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) or the subject of this article, Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD), better known by its initials and symbol, AMD.
Not looking to be an also-ran
At present, AMD has a 4% share of the data center GPU market. That's not much, but it's double the next-largest company, which is Huawei, at 2%.
It's second only to Nvidia in the market, which means it's in arguably the best position to chip away at Nvidia's lead. And that seems to be exactly what AMD is trying to do.
Late last year, AMD signed an agreement with OpenAI that will see it supply the AI start-up with hundreds of thousands of chips and allow OpenAI to buy up to a 10% stake in AMD. AMD expects the agreement to generate more than $100 billion in revenue from OpenAI alone.
But the deals didn't stop there. In February of this year, AMD signed another agreement with Meta Platforms to provide it with 6 gigawatts of its Instinct GPUs.
Along with those two, Microsoft and Oracle have both announced that they will purchase AMD's hardware. It's far from exclusive, and both companies are likely to continue buying plenty from Nvidia, but it will help AMD gain market share.
All signs point to AMD gaining traction in the industry. It will likely be some time before AMD threatens Nvidia's dominance, if it can manage to do so in the first place. But an investment in AMD can help diversify your GPU investment portfolio, and with the company's latest results, it's looking like a serious growth prospect.
For 2025, AMD brought in $34.6 billion, up 34% over 2024, and its diluted earnings per share (EPS) grew 26% over the same period. While AMD's net margin is lower than Nvidia's at 12.3% and 55.6%, respectively, AMD's is still solid, which likely has a lot to do with pricing.
The reason AMD is shaping up to be a competitor to Nvidia is that, at least on the consumer side, its GPUs offer comparable performance to their Nvidia counterparts while costing considerably less.
All other things being equal, lower prices generally equal lower margins. But if AMD's hardware is good enough, it can snatch some market share away from Nvidia even if Nvidia's hardware is superior in some ways.
That's AMD's avenue of attack to gain market share over Nvidia, and it seems to be working based on the deals the company is locking in. It could pay to have shares of both companies in your portfolio to hedge your AI hardware bet.

In the latest quarter, billionaire Dan Loeb made a striking move, selling shares of several artificial intelligence (AI) leaders -- but adding to his position in a key AI stock, one that's soared about 453,000% since its initial public offering. Clearly, Loeb thinks this winning player has more room to run, even after such extraordinary gains. Let's take a closer look at the AI moves of this investing giant.

AI stocks encounter turbulence
First, though, it's important to consider the general market environment when Loeb made these moves. This concerns the fourth quarter of last year, and early in that period, AI stocks, the players that have been driving stock market gains, continued to climb -- but by the middle of the quarter, concerns mounted regarding the high valuations of AI stocks and the possibility of a bubble taking shape. And that resulted in declines in many of these stocks in November.
Loeb, who oversees $7.2 billion in 13F securities at Third Point, invests significantly in technology stocks, with these players in three of the top five positions in his fund. Technology stocks also have been among his biggest investment areas over the past year.
Now, let's check out the moves Loeb made in the fourth quarter.
Loeb closed his position in Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), a stock he had held since the third quarter of 2023. In the third quarter of last year, it accounted for 1.8% of the portfolio.
The billionaire reduced his Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) holding by 22%. It's still a major position, though, ranked No. 3 with a 6.8% weight in the portfolio. He's held the stock since the second quarter of 2023.
Loeb cut his position in Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) by 15%. This stock, too, remains a significant holding with a weight of 6.1%. It's the fourth-biggest holding and has been part of the portfolio since the fourth quarter of 2022.
The investing giant added to his Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) position, increasing it by just under 4%. It now represents more than 7% of the portfolio and is Loeb's second-biggest holding. He's owned the stock since the first quarter of last year.
A stock well-positioned for growth
We don't know the exact reasons behind Loeb's moves, but it's clear that he believes Nvidia may have further to go, even after its massive gains since its 1999 IPO, and is well-positioned to benefit from the current and next stages of AI growth.
It's important to remember that, as the infrastructure build-out stage unfolds, Nvidia should continue to see explosive demand. This spending, which the company forecasts may reach $4 trillion by the end of the decade, will power the ramp-up of data centers, and a key element here is the AI chip. And that's fantastic news for Nvidia, which, as the AI chip leader, sells the world's most powerful graphics processing units (GPUs).
And this market giant also should benefit as these data centers open up capacity, as customers will need the best and latest chips to power the application of AI to real-world problems. For example, GPUs are needed for inference, or the "thinking" process a model uses to do its job.
Meanwhile, Loeb hasn't given up on Amazon and Microsoft, leading cloud providers that should generate growth over the long term as customers rush to them for their AI projects. At these cloud providers, customers can find Nvidia products as well as a broad range of other AI products and services.
As for Meta, the stock climbed about 140% while it was in Loeb's portfolio, and though it may have room to run, some investors have worried about the company's aggressive spending on AI.
In any case, Loeb's moves in the quarter show ongoing commitment to the AI story, and if the billionaire is right, many AI stocks still could have plenty of room to run over time.

Billionaire Dan Loeb Sold Shares of AI Leaders Including Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta and Added to His Position in This AI Player That's Soared 453,000% Since Its IPO

Reports surfaced this week that Meta is delaying its newest custom AI model, code-named Avocado, and may temporarily license Alphabet's technology.
The company just reported 24% year-over-year revenue growth in Q4, driven primarily by its core advertising business.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg already outlined a backup plan for this scenario, noting that the company's core business can profitably absorb massive amounts of extra compute.
Shares of Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) took a hit this week following reports that the social media giant is delaying the rollout of its newest custom artificial intelligence (AI) model.
According to The New York Times, the model -- code-named Avocado -- fell short of internal benchmarks when compared to leading models from rivals like Alphabet and OpenAI. The company is even reportedly considering temporarily licensing Alphabet's Gemini model to power its AI products in the meantime to bridge the performance gap.

For a stock that has commanded a premium valuation largely due to its perceived leadership in the AI race, the headline naturally spooked some investors.
But a step back reveals a different reality. The underlying business is firing on all cylinders. And, even more, management has already prepared for this exact scenario.
So, despite the market's pessimistic reaction, is this dip a buying opportunity?
The news isn't a thesis-breaker
While the delay of a flagship AI model is not ideal, it is far from a disaster for Meta. A company spokesperson noted that the company's next model will still demonstrate rapid progress.
More importantly, investors shouldn't be entirely surprised if the timeline for achieving highly advanced AI models stretches out. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explicitly warned investors about this possibility two quarters ago.
In a call with investors last October, Zuckerberg detailed some contingencies for its massive compute build-out plan.
"If it takes longer, then we'll use the extra compute to accelerate our core business -- which continues to be able to profitably use much more compute than we've been able to throw at it," Zuckerberg explained. "And we're seeing very high demand for additional compute both internally and externally."
The company anticipated that the path to next-generation AI might not be perfectly linear, and it prepared accordingly.
A core business that needs the capacity
The biggest fear surrounding Meta's massive spending is that the company is overbuilding.
In January, Meta guided for 2026 capital expenditures of $115 billion to $135 billion. To put that massive absolute capital expenditure figure into perspective, the midpoint of this guidance range represents about 8% of the company's entire market capitalization. If custom AI models get delayed, isn't all that spending a waste?
Not exactly. The reality is that Meta's core business -- delivering targeted advertising across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp -- is highly compute-intensive anyway.
And that business is currently booming. In the fourth quarter of 2025, Meta's revenue rose 24% year over year to $59.9 billion. This was driven primarily by an 18% increase in ad impressions and a 6% rise in the average price per ad.
In a worst-case scenario where the timeline for advanced AI is drastically delayed, Meta is simply building ahead of its infrastructure needs -- another contingency Zuckerberg discussed in its third-quarterearnings calllast year.
"And in the worst case, we would just slow building new infrastructure for some period while we grow into what we build," Zuckerberg said.
Is this a buy-the-dip moment?
Ultimately, I don't believe this AI model delay is as bad for investors as the recent sell-off suggests.
Meta is a highly profitable enterprise with a durable core business. Yes, the company is spending aggressively, but that spending is supported by an $81.6 billion war chest of cash and marketable securities and a proven ability to monetize user engagement.
With that said, valuation always matters. And the stock's current valuation arguably still assumes strong execution in both its core ad business and its future AI endeavors. A valuation like this leaves little room for error, therefore, if the core business begins to slow down while capital expenditures remain elevated.
Fortunately, Meta guided for even faster revenue growth in Q1. The midpoint of its revenue guidance range implies 30% year-over-year growth. So I don't think we have to worry about a potential slowdown yet. Still, the company's growth trajectory will constantly be under extreme scrutiny as long as its capital expenditures remain elevated.
But for investors willing to look past the near-term noise and accept the risks associated with a major technological transition, this dip looks like an attractive opportunity to start a small position in the stock.

Meta Platforms Stock Dips on AI Model Worries. Time to Buy?

Taking a look at which stocks billionaire investment managers are buying can be a great way for retail investors to generate investment ideas. Those wealthy operators have a lot more resources to bring to bear when they are analyzing potential purchases, after all, and some have great track records.
One billionaire whom I follow is Bill Ackman, who founded and leads Pershing Square Capital Management. During the fourth quarter, Pershing Square loaded up on one new stock in particular: Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). It owned zero shares of the social media giant at the start of the period, but by the end, its stake was worth $1.8 billion, constituting more than 11% of the hedge fund's portfolio.

That's clearly an indicator that Ackman is bullish on Meta Platforms, but is it still a good investment for you to make right now?
Investors are looking at old information
We only get snapshots about the activities of those billionaire investors because any fund with $100 million or more under management is legally required to file a Form 13F four times a year. Those forms detail a fund's holdings as of the end of each quarter, and must be submitted no later than 45 days after that quarter ended.
With that in mind, recognize that the information we recently received is old. The trades that built Pershing Square's Meta stake happened months ago. Still, Meta's stock price is lower than it was during the first part of Q4, and essentially the same price as it was throughout the rest. So investors can pick up Meta stock now for around what Ackman paid.
But would that be a smart move?
Meta operates some of the world's most-used social media sites, including Facebook and Instagram. It's also investing heavily in its AI capabilities to ensure that it stays relevant in an AI-first world. While the company has launched a few iterations of its Meta Glasses, future versions in the works will make its current smart glasses product look like ancient technology. Only time will tell how they end up faring in the marketplace, but developing them is a significant expense for the company.
But on the spending front, Meta is laying out massive sums to build AI data centers, and this may be Wall Street's biggest issue with the company. In 2026, management expects capital expenditures of between $115 billion and $135 billion, most of which will go into its data center buildout. For reference, Meta generated $116 billion in cash from operations during 2025, so nearly all of its cash flow is being used to construct data centers.
This has many investors worried, which is why the stock has sunk by about 20% from its 2025 peak and now trades at just 21.4 times forward earnings -- a lower valuation than the average stock in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). That looks like a screaming deal for a company that just grew its revenue at a 24% pace during Q4.
I think following Ackman's lead and investing in Meta Platforms could be a good idea now, because if the company gets AI right, its stock could rocket higher, as the market is only valuing the business now based on its current capabilities.
