It turns out that a potentially awesome partnership backfired. Even the final act of shutting down that deal left Krispy Kreme scrambling to fight the massive infrastructure costs that came along with it. At this point, Krispy Kreme investors might wish the company had never agreed to that costly McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) contract.
What happened to the McDonald's deal?
Krispy Kreme started shipping doughnuts to McDonald's restaurants in October, 2022. The limited test run in Louisville, Kentucky, saw decent results, inspiring a larger-scale implementation in 2024.
But the nationwide rollout was never completed, as Krispy Kreme pulled the plug on this project in the second quarter of 2025. Management noted that the doughnut delivery program was too expensive on a networkwide scale. Furthermore, it will take several quarters to unwind the attempts to build an effective production and delivery network in support of the McDonald's deal.
What's next for Krispy Kreme?
As a result, Krispy Kreme is reviewing its entire logistics setup in search of more cost-effective solutions. The company is ending hundreds of underperforming delivery contracts, though more than half of the shuttered deals will be replaced with higher-volume routes by the end of 2025.
That may sound like an empty promise, but the partners for these new routes include giant household names such as Walmart, Costco, and Kroger. As long as Krispy Kreme can focus these operations on the most profitable delivery routes, the company might be poised for a long-term turnaround.
But that's a pretty speculative forecast. For now, Krispy Kreme investors are simply disappointed in the failed McDonald's experiment and its financial aftermath.

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. CMG has been witnessing a decline in comparable restaurant sales since the beginning of 2025, mainly due to lower customer transactions. In the first six months of 2025, the company’s comparable restaurant sales declined 2.3% against 9.1% growth in the year-ago period, mainly pressured by a 3.7% downtrend in transactions.
Although higher average checks and menu price increases are battling to keep the comps afloat, it is not proving to be sufficient. To counter this headwind and increase sales unit performance across all its restaurants, the company is engaging in several business initiatives, one of which includes enhancing its loyalty program. Launched in 2019, the Chipotle Rewards loyalty program has been scaling since then, with about 20 million loyalty members as of June 30, 2025.
CMG has been consistently enhancing and diversifying its loyalty program offerings to boost customer engagement and ramp up transactions. To add more people to its loyalty program, the company bolstered its enrollment campaigns and signage, both in restaurants and across the digital platform. It launched a three-month gamified experience with extra points, badges and prizes, named Summer of Extras, as its number of reward members reached milestones. The launch of the Summer of Extras promotion boosted customer engagement and increased transactions between June and July 2025, resulting in digital sign-ups growing 14% year over year. Besides this, for fall 2025, Chipotle has another program scheduled targeting the college population. It aims to keep engaging in sales boosting initiatives to increase customer engagement in its loyalty program and boost their frequency and spend year over year.
Loyalty program offerings, effectively amalgamated with operational efficiency, digital enhancements and marketing innovation, have the potential to boost sales trends and revenue growth in the long term.
Competitive Position of Chipotle
Loyalty programs are one of the most well-known marketing initiatives in the restaurant industry to boost customer engagement and sales trends. Chipotle faces substantial competition when it comes to offering a diversified and engaging loyalty program from key market players like McDonald’s Corporation MCD and Starbucks Corporation SBUX.

3. McDonald's
Another iconic brand that consumers will be familiar with is McDonald's. The company's golden arches are usually cleverly positioned high enough so that travelers can easily spot them from far away. It has a vast global presence, with around 38,000 restaurants spanning well over 100 countries and territories. The fast food chain tweaks its menu to adapt to local cultures, and that flexibility allows the business to succeed and cater to a wide range of customers.
And with many value options, eating at a McDonald's can often be a relatively cheap option for consumers to consider, whether they're traveling or just want a quick meal. The versatility of its operations is what makes it likely that McDonald's will continue to be a top fast food chain for years to come.

Despite the recent sell-off, Chipotle remains fundamentally strong, with several levers to drive long-term growth. Management has emphasized that comps turned positive in June and early July, helped by the rollout of targeted marketing campaigns and new menu innovations. Programs like the “Summer of Extras” rewards initiative attracted millions of participants, while limited-time items such as Chipotle Honey Chicken and Adobo Ranch boosted transaction volumes and customer engagement.
Expansion remains a key growth engine. Chipotle opened 61 new restaurants in the second quarter of 2025, with the majority featuring its popular Chipotlane format. Recent updates allow for more personalized rewards, reminders and menu suggestions, and about 20 million members have been active or made a transaction in the past year. The company has also leaned into gamification with its “Summer of Extras” program, which offered bonus points, badges and prizes to loyalty members. The promotion significantly lifted participation, spending and visit frequency, and management plans to build on this momentum with a college-focused loyalty campaign this fall.
The company is also preparing to test a catering platform this fall, an area that currently accounts for 1-2% of sales compared with 5-10% for peers, suggesting a sizable runway for incremental revenues. These factors provide investors with reason to remain optimistic about CMG’s ability to regain momentum over the longer term.

This year, Goodyear expects to sell fewer tires year-over-year worldwide because US wholesalers already have sufficient tires in stock. Meanwhile, demand is stagnant overseas, with a stagnant Asia-Pacific economic environment. In addition, Goodyear produced fewer tires in the second quarter, meaning that the company will have a more difficult time spreading its fixed costs, leading to an expected extra $50 million in costs.

Will New Beverage Innovation Revive Starbucks' U.S. Comparable Sales?

At Holdings Channel, we have reviewed the latest batch of the 155 most recent 13F filings for the 06/30/2025 reporting period, and noticed that McDonald's Corp (Symbol: MCD) was held by 47 of these funds. When hedge fund managers appear to be thinking alike, we find it is a good idea to take a closer look.
Before we proceed, it is important to point out that 13F filings do not tell the whole story, because these funds are only required to disclose their long positions with the SEC, but are not required to disclose their short positions. A fund making a bearish bet against a stock by shorting calls, for example, might also be long some amount of stock as they trade around their overall bearish position. This long component could show up in a 13F filing and everyone might assume the fund is bullish, but this tells only part of the story because the bearish/short side of the position is not seen.
Having given that caveat, we believe that looking at groups of 13F filings can be revealing, especially when comparing one holding period to another. Below, let's take a look at the change in MCD positions, for this latest batch of 13F filers:
In terms of shares owned, we count 25 of the above funds having increased existing MCD positions from 03/31/2025 to 06/30/2025, with 18 having decreased their positions and 2 new positions. Worth noting is that Mane Global Capital Management LP, included in this recent batch of 13F filers, exited MCD common stock as of 06/30/2025.
Looking beyond these particular funds in this one batch of most recent filers, we tallied up the MCD share count in the aggregate among all of the funds which held MCD at the 06/30/2025 reporting period (out of the 5,995 we looked at in total). We then compared that number to the sum total of MCD shares those same funds held back at the 03/31/2025 period, to see how the aggregate share count held by hedge funds has moved for MCD. We found that between these two periods, funds increased their holdings by 14,121,120 shares in the aggregate, from 341,376,245 up to 355,497,365 for a share count increase of approximately 4.14%.
