The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday closed down by -0.16%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down by -0.09%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down by -0.51%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) fell -0.14%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) fell -0.51%.
Stock indexes erased early gains on Monday and turned lower, with the S&P 500 falling to a 2-week low and the Nasdaq 100 sliding to a 2.5-week low. Stocks settled lower on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s important November payrolls report. Also, energy stocks retreated after crude prices dropped to a 1.75-month low, and cryptocurrency-exposed stocks slumped after Bitcoin fell more than -4% to a 2-week low.

Stocks extended last Friday’s losses on Monday on concerns over artificial intelligence spending. Broadcom closed down more than -5%, and Oracle fell more than -2% to lead AI-infrastructure stocks lower as last week’s disappointing outlooks from Oracle and Broadcom have prompted some investors to rotate out of the tech sector amid lofty valuations and uncertainty over whether vast spending on AI infrastructure will ultimately pay off.
Dovish Fed comments on Monday were supportive for stocks. Fed Governor Stephen Miran said the Fed's policy stance is unnecessarily restrictive for the economy, citing a benign inflation outlook and labor-market warning signs. Also, NY Fed President John Williams said, "The FOMC has moved the modestly restrictive stance of monetary policy toward neutral," amid increased employment risks and somewhat reduced inflation risks.
Monday’s US economic news was mixed for stocks. The Dec Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions unexpectedly contracted -22.6 points to -3.9, weaker than expectations of 10.0. Also, the Dec NAHB housing market index rose +1 to an 8-month high of 39, right on expectations.
Weaker-than-expected Chinese economic news is negative for global growth prospects. China's Nov industrial production unexpectedly eased to +4.8% y/y from +4.9% y/y in Oct, versus expectations of an increase to +5.0% y/y. Also, China's Nov retail sales rose +1.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of +2.9% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in 2.75 years. In addition, China's new home prices fell 0.39% m/m, marking the 30th consecutive month of declines.
This week's market focus will be on US economic news. On Tuesday, Nov nonfarm payrolls are expected to increase by +50,000, and the Nov unemployment rate is expected to be at 4.5%. Meanwhile, Nov average hourly earnings are expected to rise by +0.3% m/m and +3.6% y/y. Also, on Tuesday, Oct retail sales are expected to be up +0.1% m/m, and Oct retail sales ex-autos are expected to be up +0.2% m/m. Finally, on Tuesday, the Dec S&P manufacturing PMI is expected to decline by -0.2 to 52.0. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall -11,000 to 225,000. Also, Nov CPI is expected to be +3.1% y/y, and Nov core CPI is expected to be +3.0% y/y. On Friday, Nov existing home sales are expected to be up +1.2% m/m to 4.15 million. Also, the University of Michigan Dec consumer sentiment index is expected to be revised upward by +0.2 to 53.5 from the previously reported 53.3.
The markets are discounting a 22% chance that the FOMC will cut the fed funds target range by 25 bp at the next FOMC meeting on January 27-28.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Monday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.56%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed down -0.55%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.31%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Monday closed up by +3.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -0.4 bp to 4.180%. T-notes rose on Monday after the Dec Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions unexpectedly contracted, a dovish factor for Fed policy. T-notes also have support from dovish comments by Fed Governor Stephen Miran, who said the Fed's policy stance is unnecessarily restrictive for the economy. T-notes fell back from their best level after the Dec NAHB housing market index rose to an 8-month high.
The steepening yield curve is bearish for T-note prices. Steepening trades occur when bond investors buy short-term government debt and sell long -term debt. The yield curve has steepened since last Wednesday’s FOMC meeting, when the Fed said it would begin purchasing up to $40 billion of short-term T-bills a month, starting today, to boost liquidity in the financial system. Longer-term Treasury securities are also under pressure from concerns about inflation and the Fed’s independence.
European government bond yields moved lower on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield fell -0.4 bp to 2.853%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -2.1 bp to 4.496%.
Eurozone Oct industrial production rose +0.8% m/m, right on expectations and the biggest increase in 5 months.
Swaps are discounting a 0% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks tumbled on Monday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) fell more than -4% to a 2-week low. Riot Platforms (RIOT) is down more than -7%, and Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) is down more than -6%. Also, Strategy (MSTR) and Mara Holdings (MARA) are down more than -5%, and Coinbase Global (COIN) is down more than -3%.
Energy producers and energy service providers retreated on Monday as WTI crude oil fell more than -1% to a 1.75-month low. Devon Energy (DVN) closed down more than -3%. Also, China's Nov retail sales rose +1.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of +2.9% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in 2.75 years. In addition, China's new home prices fell 0.39% m/m, marking the 30th consecutive month of declines.
This week's market focus will be on US economic news. Later today, the Dec NAHB housing market index is expected to increase by +1 to 39. On Tuesday, Nov nonfarm payrolls are expected to increase by +50,000, and the Nov unemployment rate is expected to be at 4.5%. Meanwhile, Nov average hourly earnings are expected to rise by +0.3% m/m and +3.6% y/y. Also, on Tuesday, Oct retail sales are expected to be up +0.1% m/m, and Oct retail sales ex-autos are expected to be up +0.2% m/m. Finally, on Tuesday, the Dec S&P manufacturing PMI is expected to decline by -0.2 to 52.0. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall -11,000 to 225,000. Also, Nov CPI is expected to be +3.1% y/y, and Nov core CPI is expected to be +3.0% y/y. On Friday, Nov existing home sales are expected to be up +1.2% m/m to 4.15 million. Also, the University of Michigan Dec consumer sentiment index is expected to be revised upward by +0.2 to 53.5 from the previously reported 53.3.
The markets are discounting a 27% chance that the FOMC will cut the fed funds target range by 25 bp at the next FOMC meeting on January 27-28.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.71%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed down -0.55%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.31%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) today are up by +7 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -2.0 bp to 4.165%. T-notes are climbing today after the Dec Empire manufacturing survey of general business conditions unexpectedly contracted, a dovish factor for Fed policy. T-notes also have support from dovish comments by Fed Governor Stephen Miran, who said the Fed's policy stance is unnecessarily restrictive for the economy. Strength in stocks today is limiting the upside in T-note prices.
The steepening yield curve is bearish for T-note prices. Steepening trades occur when bond investors buy short-term government debt and sell long -term debt. The yield curve has steepened since last Wednesday’s FOMC meeting, when the Fed said it would begin purchasing up to $40 billion of short-term T-bills a month, starting today, to boost liquidity in the financial system. Longer-term Treasury securities are also under pressure from concerns about inflation and the Fed’s independence.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield is down -1.7 bp to 2.840%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -2.2 bp to 4.494%.
Eurozone Oct industrial production rose +0.8% m/m, right on expectations and the biggest increase in 5 months.
Swaps are discounting a 0% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
KLA Corp (KLAC) is up more than +4% to lead chip makers higher after Jeffries upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $1,500. Also, Micron Technology (MU) and Lam Research (LRCX) are up more than +2%. In addition, Applied Materials (AMAT), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), Nvidia (NVDA), and ASML Holding NV (ASML) are up more than +1%.
Mining stocks are moving higher today, with gold and copper up more than +1% and silver up more than +3%. As a result, Barrick Mining (B) and Newmont (NEM) are up more than +1%. Also, Hecla Mining (HL) and Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) are up more than +1%.
Immunome (IMNM) is up more than +23% after announcing positive results from a Phase 3 trial of its Varegacestat in patients with desmoid tumors.
ZIM Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) is up more than +5% after Calcalist reported that MSC has submitted a bid to purchase the company.
Akam Technologies (AKAM) is up more than +4% after KeyBanc Capital Markets double-upgraded the stock to overweight from underweight with a price target of $115.
Teradyne (TER) is up more than +3% after Goldman Sachs double-upgraded the stock to buy from sell with a price target of $230.
Corebridge Financial (CRBG) is up more than +3% after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the stock will replace Allete Inc in the S&P MidCap 400 effective before the open of trading on Wednesday, December 17.
Doximity (DOCS) is up by more than +2% after Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight, with a price target of $65.
Charles River Laboratories (CRL) is up more than +2% after JPMorgan Chase raised its price target on the stock to $190 from $165.
ServiceNow (NOW) is down more than -9% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after KeyBanc Capital Markets downgraded the stock to underweight from sector weight with a price target of $775.
ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) is down more than -3% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $120.
Entegris Inc. (ENTG) is down more than -2% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $75.
LyondellBasell Industries NV (LYB) is down more than -1% after BMO Capital Markets downgraded the stock to underperform from market perform with a price target of $36/
Adobe (ADBE) is down more than -1% after KeyBanc Capital Markets downgraded the stock to underweight from sector weight with a price target of $310.

Stocks Climb in Anticipation of Fed-Friendly US Economic News

In early trading on Tuesday, shares of CVS Health topped the list of the day's best performing components of the S&P 500 index, trading up 5.0%. Year to date, CVS Health registers a 78.9% gain.
And the worst performing S&P 500 component thus far on the day is AutoZone, trading down 5.0%. AutoZone is showing a gain of 11.7% looking at the year to date performance.

Looking at the universe of stocks we cover at Dividend Channel, in trading on Thursday, shares of LyondellBasell Industries NV (Symbol: LYB) were yielding above the 12% mark based on its quarterly dividend (annualized to $5.48), with the stock changing hands as low as $43.18 on the day. Dividends are particularly important for investors to consider, because historically speaking dividends have provided a considerable share of the stock market's total return. At times like these, there are a number of reasons to consider dividend stocks over non-dividend-paying stocks. First, dividend stocks can reward investors without share-price appreciation and also tend to be less volatile than stocks that don't pay dividends. Though they may not have the same upside potential as some non-dividend-paying stocks, dividend stocks generally perform better when the market is falling.

1. LyondellBasell (12.2% dividend yield)
LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB) is a multinational chemical company that's now the highest dividend payer in the S&P 500 by a substantial margin. Unfortunately, the title of highest yield has come from the stock's underperformance, rather than a surge in its dividend payout.
Year to date, the stock is down 40% as it's faced a wide range of pressures, including higher input costs, weak demand for products like polypropylene, increased competition, and overcapacity in much of the world, including Asia. However, it's optimistic about a capacity rebalancing.
Nonetheless, LyondellBasell topped estimates in its third-quarter earnings report, though results were down sharply from a year ago. Revenue fell 10% to $7.72 billion, and the company reported an earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) loss of $835 million after adjustments, down from $1.17 billion in the quarter a year ago.
The company's outlook for the fourth quarter was also underwhelming, though it has sufficient cash on hand to fund its dividend. For now, the 12% dividend yield looks safe, but a sustained downturn could lead to a cut.
2. Alexandria Real Estate Equities (10% dividend yield)
Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) are known for paying dividends, so it shouldn't be a surprise to find a REIT like Alexandria Real Estate Equities (NYSE: ARE) on this list. Alexandria is a life-science REIT, developing megacampus ecosystems in markets across the country.
Like LyondelBasell, Alexandria stock has also fallen sharply this year, down 48%, as the company has struggled. It missed guidance, offered a weak initial outlook for 2026, taken impairments on some of its assets, faced an oversupply of properties in the life sciences sector, and experienced declining occupancy rates.
Revenue was down 1.5% in the third quarter to $751.9 million, and its adjusted funds from operations (FFO), a key figure in the REIT industry, were down from $2.37 to $2.22 in the quarter.
Alexandria has a long history of hiking its dividend steadily but seems to be holding back on raising it, due to the headwinds the business is facing. The company said that the board of directors expects to carefully evaluate its 2026 dividend strategy, a hint that it might get cut. Given the weakness in the business, Alexandria Real Estate looks best avoided in the current environment.
3. Conagra Brands (7.9% dividend yield)
Packaged-food giant Conagra Brands (NYSE: CAG) hails from another industry that has struggled this year, as shares of the owner of brands like Duncan Hines, Slim Jim, and Reddi-wip are down 36% this year. Falling sales and profitability, weak volume, and a downbeat outlook due, in part, to inflation have all weighed on the stock recently.
In the company's most recent earnings report, organic sales fell 0.6%, while adjusted operating margin compressed by 244 basis points to 11.8%, leading to a 26.4% declined in adjusted earnings per share (EPS) to $0.39.
For fiscal 2026, the company expects adjusted EPS of $1.70-$1.85. The company currently pays $1.40 in dividends, so it should be able to support that dividend, giving yield hunters a near-8% dividend yield.
However, Conagra's overall performance has been disappointing for at least a decade, so investors should temper their overall expectations for the stock.

When the next bear market arrives -- that's a when, not an if, because it will eventually happen -- you will want to be holding dividend-paying stocks that deliver income while the market is moving down or sideways.
But which dividend-paying stocks should a smart investor be looking at?
Well above average yields
Consider that the current yield of the entire S&P 500 index -- the sum of all the annual dividends those stocks pay divided by the cumulative share price -- is just about 1.15%. It's that low because many of the stocks in the index pay small dividends relative to their share prices, and about a quarter of the companies in the index pay no dividend at all.
Fortunately, there are many stocks in the S&P 500 with dividend yields that are way above the index average.
These three have yields that are among the highest in the S&P 500 index.
Let's take a quick look at these three dividend monsters and see if they're worth buying.
Tough markets and regulations
LyondellBasell Industries is an international chemical company that specializes in refining and producing plastic resins. The company has a market cap of about $14.5 billion and annual sales of about $30 billion.
But revenue is currently going the wrong way. Third-quarter revenue of $7.7 billion was down 25% from a year earlier, with a net loss of $890 million. The company blamed a difficult market and regulatory environment that caused significant write-downs.
The stock is down 38% year to date (since Jan. 1, 2025) and 47% during the past 52 weeks. Wall Street's average recommendation on the LyondellBasell is a hold.
Falling occupancy
Alexandria Real Estate Equities is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that specializes in office buildings and labs with tenants in the life sciences and technology sectors. It caters to businesses in high-tech cluster areas like Boston, San Francisco, New York, and Southern California.
Times are tough for this company, too. The REIT reported Q3 results last week that saw it miss analysts' expectations on both revenue and earnings. Revenue dropped 5% and funds from operations, a metric REITs use to measure recurring operating earnings, fell 7%.
Worse, management lowered its forecast for funds from operations for 2025.
The company reported a falling occupancy rate and also realized real estate impairments in the quarter -- trying to get all the bad news out at once -- that pushed earnings into the red.
The stock is down 43% year to date and 50% during the past year. Yet Wall Street currently rates it a buy.
Declining sales and profits
Conagra Brands makes well-known packaged foods such as Slim Jim, Healthy Choice, Duncan Hines, Hunt's, Vlasic, and Birds Eye, among many others.
This company, too, has performed poorly of late. In its fiscal first quarter (ended Aug. 24), sales declined 5.8% while earnings fell almost 65%. Low growth, inflationary pressures, and high debt are the culprits for the company's recent misfortunes. It has also lost sales and profit from recent divestitures of entire units, such as Chef Boyardee canned pasta.
The stock is down 38% this year and 40% during the past 52 weeks. The average recommendation is a hold.
A big part of the reason these three stocks have such high dividend yields is, of course, that their share prices are down significantly during the past year. Stock prices and dividend yields move in opposite directions, after all.
So are they worth buying?
I would argue that LyondellBasell Industries should be avoided, as predicting where the international plastics market and tariffs are headed is difficult right now. As for Alexandria Real Estate, it caters to businesses in an industry -- biotech -- that is poised for strong growth during the next decade, and it has a strong credit ranking and stable balance sheet.
For its part, Conagra is in the midst of a turnaround that could lower debt and boost profits -- and send the share price back up.
All three stocks are clearly on sale at the moment, so investors can pick them up now and enjoy a steady return while they wait for share prices to recover.
