Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) has been on a tear for the better part of the last decade, but the company has experienced a bit of a slowdown of late. The stock is down 8% over the trailing-12-month period, partly because of a clinical setback, although general market volatility and the threat of tariffs probably didn't help.
However, this is little more than a temporary slump. Lilly's prospects remain incredibly bright, and at current levels, the company's shares even look undervalued.

Looking at (and beyond) valuation metrics
One might scoff at the idea that Eli Lilly is undervalued. The company is trading at 27 times forward earnings, which is well above the average of 17.5 for the healthcare industry.
However, that doesn't tell us the whole story. If Eli Lilly can grow its revenue and earnings much faster than the average over the next five years or so, then that would more than justify its premium. Note that the company has been doing precisely that over the past two years. In fact, Lilly's recent top-line growth is, frankly, abnormal for a pharmaceutical company of its size, especially considering it's kept it up over several quarters.
The only other pharmaceutical giant that has come close to Eli Lilly in this category is its longtime rival, Novo Nordisk, which it's now leaving in the dust. So, Lilly has proven it can beat the average in this category -- what about the future?
There's more to look forward to
Eli Lilly should benefit from significant tailwinds that will help it maintain strong sales growth over the next five years. The most important is the growth of the market for weight management medicines. Breakthroughs in the field, the growing population of overweight individuals over the past few decades, and the higher prevalence of a range of health conditions associated with that are all helping to fuel soaring demand for anti-obesity drugs.
Lilly is at the forefront of this wave. Its drug tirzepatide, sold under the brand name Zepbound in weight management, is beating records. Wall Street analysts were licking their chops when they modeled peak annual sales of $25 billion for the medicine a few years ago. That would have put tirzepatide in an exceedingly rare, elite category of therapies ever to reach a peak that high. However, tirzepatide could generate more than that this year (it racked up $14.7 billion in the first half of the year), after being approved only three years ago.
Some new projections now predict sales of almost $62 billion for tirzepatide by 2030. That would put it in a category of...one.
But tirzepatide won't be Eli Lilly's only growth driver. The company is inching closer to launching orforglipron, an oral GLP-1 medicine. This therapy aced late-stage clinical trials, some of which put it head-to-head against other notable drugs -- and orforglipron emerged the winner.
Orforglipron could address some crucial shortcomings. First, some patients prefer oral pills over needles. Second, pills are cheaper to manufacture, store, and transport. They are arguably more commercially viable than subcutaneous injection at the same efficacy. And while orforglipron didn't match tirzepatide's potency, it will likely end up being cheaper and a better option for patients paying out of pocket -- tirzepatide's price tag has been a significant turnoff for many.
By 2030, orforglipron could generate up to $12.7 billion in sales. Together with tirzepatide and other products, it could help make Lilly the world's top-selling pharmaceutical company by then. So Eli Lilly's growth outlook still looks strong. The drugmaker is more than reasonably valued relative to its growth potential.
Don't forget the dividend
There are plenty of other aspects of Eli Lilly's business that make the stock a buy. Let's focus on just one of them: its dividend program. Lilly has been generating plenty of cash and has used some of it to reward shareholders with consistent and material payout increases. Over the past five years, the company's dividend has doubled. And there's more where that came from -- the payout ratio of 37% still looks reasonable.
The stock may not have a particularly impressive forward yield. It's just 0.7%, which is lower than the S&P 500's already low average of 1.2%. However, every other aspect of its dividend profile looks great. Altogether, Eli Lilly is an excellent choice for both income- and growth-seeking investors.

3 Cancer Stocks in Focus
Relay Therapeutics is developing RLY-2608, its lead investigational candidate and a mutant-selective PI3Kα inhibitor, as a novel medicine for CDK4/6-experienced patients with PI3Kα mutations, where there is a large unmet medical need. In clinical studies, RLY-2608 has shown the potential benefit in improving both the tolerability profile and progression-free survival compared to standard-of-care drugs in this setting. Relay initiated a pivotal phase III study called ReDiscover-2 on RLY-260, in combination with AstraZeneca’s Faslodex for second-line PI3Kα-mutated, HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer in the second quarter.

Fate Therapeutics is focused on developing and manufacturing universal, off-the-shelf cell products using its proprietary induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) product platform. Its immuno-oncology pipeline includes iPSC-derived natural killer cells and T-cell product candidates.
Fate Therapeutics is co-developing FT825/ONO-8250, a multiplexed-engineered, iPSC-derived CAR T-cell product candidate, with ONO Pharmaceutical. It is conducting a phase I study to assess the safety, pharmacokinetics and activity of FT825/ONO-8250 in patients with advanced solid tumors.
To date, treatment with FT825/ONO-8250 has shown a favorable safety profile with no dose-limiting toxicities. Fate Therapeutics also has some next-generation iPSC-derived CAR T-cell programs in pre-clinical development. In July, the FDA allowed the company’s investigational new drug (IND) application to begin phase I clinical studies on FT836, its MICA/B-targeted CAR T-cell program. Fate has a Zacks Rank of 2.
Verastem Oncology’s novel combination regimen of avutometinib plus defactinib was approved by the FDA in early May for treating KRAS mutant recurrent low-grade serous ovarian cancer (LGSOC), a rare and distinct type of ovarian cancer. The approval was granted under the FDA’s accelerated approval pathway and is commercialized in the U.S. market as an oral combination co-pack with the two prescription products, known as “Avmapki Fakzynja Co-Pack.” The innovative combination therapy generated $2.1 million in sales in the first six weeks of launch.
Following the FDA approval, Avmapki Fakzynja Co-Pack is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for the LGSOC indication. Per Verastem Oncology, the combo sets a new standard of care for women with recurrent LGSOC with a KRAS mutation.
The company is also evaluating avutometinib plus defactinib in combination studies in first-line metastatic pancreatic cancer as well as non-small cell lung cancer in early to mid-stage studies. In May, VSTM reported strong overall response rates from a phase I/II study evaluating avutometinib plus defactinib in combination with chemotherapy for the first-line treatment of metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Based on the positive data, VSTM plans to initiate a registrational phase III study in front-line metastatic PDAC in 2026.

3 Cancer-Focused Stocks Showing Strong Pipeline Progress

Incyte Corporation INCY reported third-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings of $2.26 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.66. The company had incurred adjusted earnings of $1.07 per share in the year-ago quarter.
Total revenues in the third quarter were $1.37 billion, which grew 20% year over year, driven primarily by the sustained performance of its lead drug, Jakafi (ruxolitinib), and increased sales of Opzelura (ruxolitinib) cream on strong launch and demand. The top line beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.26 billion.

INCY's Q3 Results in Detail
Revenues from the sale of Jakafi, a first-in-class JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor approved for polycythemia vera, myelofibrosis and refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), came in at $791.1 million, up 7% from the year-ago quarter, owing to a 10% increase in paid demand. Jakafi's sales beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $770 million.
Opzelura (ruxolitinib) cream, approved for atopic dermatitis and vitiligo, generated $188 million in sales, which rose 35% year over year, and beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $179.1 million. The year-over-year rise in sales was driven by increased patient demand and refills in the United States for both its approved indications.
The newly approved medicine Zynyz (retifanlimab-dlwr) generated sales of $22.7 million, which significantly increased from the year-ago quarter and beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $9.5 million. The company obtained accelerated approval for Zynyz to treat metastatic or recurrent locally advanced Merkel cell carcinoma. Net product revenues of Iclusig were $37.6 million, up 26% year over year. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $30.6 million. Pemazyre generated $22.7 million in sales, reflecting a year-over-year increase of 10%. The figure also surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $22 million.
Minjuvi's revenues totaled $42 million, up 34% year over year. The figure also beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $37.9 million. Incyte gained worldwide exclusive global rights for tafasitamab from MorphoSys AG, which is marketed as Monjuvi in the United States and as Minjuvi in the ex-U.S. markets in 2024.
Incyte and partner Syndax Pharmaceuticals obtained FDA approval for axatilimab-csfr, an anti-CSF-1R antibody, for the treatment of GVHD after the failure of at least two prior lines of systemic therapy in adult and pediatric patients weighing at least 40 kg. The candidate was approved under the brand name Niktimvo. The drug is Incyte’s second approved treatment for chronic GVHD (third-line) and was launched in the United States during the first quarter of 2025. The drug recorded $45.8 million in sales in the third quarter of 2025, up 27% sequentially, driven by strong uptake.
Shares of Incyte have gained 34.8% year to date compared with the industry’s 10.3% growth.

Jakafi is marketed by Incyte in the United States and by Novartis NVS as Jakavi in ex-U.S. markets. Jakavi royalty revenues from Novartis for commercialization in ex-U.S. markets rose 9% to $125.6 million. Jakavi royalties beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $119.2 million.
Incyte also receives royalties from the sales of Tabrecta (capmatinib) for the treatment of adult patients with metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer. Its partner, Novartis, has exclusive worldwide development and commercialization rights for Tabrecta. Royalty revenues from the drug’s sales amounted to $6.5 million, up 10% year over year. However, the reported figure missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $7.2 million.
Olumiant’s (baricitinib) product royalty revenues from Eli Lilly LLY totaled $37.1 million, up 7% year over year. The figure marginally missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $37.2 million. Incyte has a collaboration agreement with Eli Lilly for Olumiant. The drug is a once-daily oral JAK inhibitor discovered by Incyte and licensed to LLY. It is approved for several types of autoimmune diseases.
Adjusted research and development (R&D) expenses totaled $467 million, down 11% year over year. This decrease was primarily due to a $100 million milestone payment made to MacroGenics in the year-ago quarter. Excluding the upfront and milestone payments and Escient severance payments from the year-ago period, R&D expenses increased 7% in third-quarter 2025, primarily driven by continued investment in late-stage development assets.
Adjusted selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses were $308 million, up 11% from the prior-year quarter’s number, primarily due to increased international marketing activities to support product launches.
INCY’s cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities amounted to $2.9 billion as of Sept. 30, 2025, compared with the $2.4 billion recorded as of June 30, 2025.

Adjusted R&D expenses and adjusted SG&A expenses are expected to remain unchanged in the ranges of $1.815-$1.84 billion and $1.16-$1.185 billion, respectively, in 2025.

BDF-Gestion's bet on Eli Lilly wasn't the biggest one it made in the third quarter, but it was significant. Valued at $15.2 million, it was the firm's eighth-largest holding at the end of September.
Lilly's dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, tirzepatide, could become the top-selling drug of all time. First approved as Mounjaro for diabetes in 2022, and again as Zepbound for obesity in 2023, it's already a mega-blockbuster.
In the first half of 2025, combined sales of Zepbound and Mounjaro soared 121% to reach $14.7 billion. It's just one of dozens of treatments that Lilly markets, but it's already responsible for a majority of total revenue. Sales could soar even further. Estimates on Wall Street vary, but some analysts expect combined sales of tirzepatide and similar drugs to reach a whopping $100 billion annually by 2030.
Tirzepatide is an important revenue stream, but it isn’t the only growth driver in Eli Lilly’s product lineup. Sales of Ebglyss, a treatment for eczema, could soar going forward. Long-term trial data recently showed that it helped about 80% of patients achieve clearance on at least 75% of their bodies.

Right now, the major manufacturers of GLP-1 drugs are Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), which makes Wegovy, and Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY), which manufactures Zepbound. These are already blockbuster drugs, and they're bound to get even bigger. Demand for and sales of the weight loss drugs are only expected to accelerate, and the size of the anti-obesity drug market is forecast to hit $100 billion within five years.
A third major player
But a third major pharma player is emerging in the GLP-1 space.
That would be Pfizer (NYSE: PFE), which is now getting into the weight loss market. In September, it announced that it would acquire Metsera, a next-generation, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company that's developing several obesity treatments. The price of the acquisition is $4.9 billion.
One of Metsera's drug candidates, MET-233i, can be taken less frequently than the Novo Nordisk and Lilly drugs, and has proven highly effective -- it helped patients in one study to lose 8.4% of their body weight in 36 days.

What Is 1 of the Best Pharmaceutical Stocks to Buy Now?

The third-quarter 2025 reporting cycle for the Medical sector is about to pick up pace this week, as most firms are slated to share their earnings results over the next two weeks. The sector mainly comprises pharma/biotech and medical device companies. The earnings season for the drug and biotech sector kicked off around mid-October when bellwether Johnson & Johnson reported strong third-quarter results, beating estimates for earnings and sales. J&J consequently raised its sales expectations for 2025 to reflect a strong operational performance so far this year.
While most of the pharma bigwigs are slated to report their earnings results later this week, Roche posted solid growth in the first nine months of 2025 as high demand for key drugs like Phesgo (breast cancer), Xolair (food allergies), Hemlibra (hemophilia A), Vabysmo (severe eye diseases) and Ocrevus (multiple sclerosis) offset the decline in sales of legacy drugs. Consequently, Roche now expects higher earnings per share growth in 2025.
Per the Earnings Trends report, as of Oct. 22, 13.3% of the companies in the Medical sector — representing 26.8% of the sector’s market capitalization — reported quarterly earnings. Of these, 87.5% exceeded earnings estimates, while an equal share also topped revenue expectations. Earnings increased 7.4% year over year, while revenues increased 9.8%. Overall, third-quarter earnings of the Medical sector are expected to decrease 4.3%, while sales are projected to rise 8.1% from the year-ago quarter.

Even a good business can be a bad investment if you pay too much
Benjamin Graham is probably best known today for his book The Intelligent Investor. He's also known as a famed value investor, the father of fundamental analysis, and the man who helped train Warren Buffett, the legendary CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. Simply put, Graham is the reason why Buffett takes such care to buy good companies only when they look attractively priced.
One of Graham's maxims is that even a good business can be a bad investment if you overpay for it. Basically, a company's valuation matters, and you shouldn't ignore it. This is the key factor to consider when looking at Eli Lilly today.
Eli Lilly is a good business
Lilly is a pharmaceutical giant. It operates in a competitive industry that's highly technical. There's also the complication of patent protection on new drugs, which is provided for only a limited time. Every drug company has to balance investing in research and development against the patent cliffs it encounters as important patents expire.
Eli Lilly is no different from any of its peers in this regard. But it's particularly well positioned right now, while some of its peers are facing troubling patent cliffs in the next couple of years. Specifically, the company's weight loss drugs are not only in high demand, but they have patent protection until the mid-2030s. GLP-1 drugs Mounjaro and Zepbound are right at the center of what has been a huge growth engine for the pharma sector. That should help to power Lilly's performance for roughly the next decade.
That's great, but Wall Street is well aware of this fact. To start with, Eli Lilly's dividend yield is currently a slim 0.7%. That's well below the 1.2% of the S&P 500 index, and the 1.5% average yield for the overall drug sector. But, even more notable, Lilly's yield is near the lowest levels in the company's history. That hints very strongly that the stock is on the expensive side.
This view is backed up by more traditional valuation metrics. Eli Lilly's price-to-sales (P/S) ratio is around 14, versus a five-year average of 11.3. The company's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is near 54, compared to a longer-term average of 52.3. And the price-to-book (P/B) ratio is a touch over 40, versus a five-year average of just under 39.
To be fair, while the dividend yield hints at a very expensive stock, more traditional valuation metrics only suggest that the shares are modestly expensive. But either way you look at it, investors are not getting a low price when they buy Eli Lilly shares right now. Benjamin Graham probably wouldn't buy the stock today.
Make sure you're willing to pay the price
Lilly has, over the longer term, proven itself to be a well-run drugmaker. And it's positioned to take advantage of one of the most important trends in the pharmaceutical industry. But that good news looks like it's been priced into the stock.
Even though Eli Lilly has fallen around 15% from the highs it reached in 2024, most investors will probably be better off keeping this one on the wish list for now.
