Centrus Energy Corp. supplies nuclear fuel components and services for the nuclear power industry in the United States, Belgium, Japan, and internationally. The company operates through two segments, Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) and Technical Solutions. The LEU segment sells separative work units (SWU) components of LEU; natural uranium hexafluoride, uranium concentrates, and uranium conversion; and enriched uranium products to utilities that operate nuclear power plants. The Technical Solutions segment offers technical, manufacturing, engineering, and operations services to public and private sector customers. The company was formerly known as USEC Inc. and changed its name to Centrus Energy Corp. in September 2014. Centrus Energy Corp. was incorporated in 1998 and is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.

What's ailing Centrus?
There was no obvious Centrus-specific news behind the day's decline, although a few factors were likely weighing on the stock. First and foremost was the Trump administration's announcement of new tariffs on imports from dozens of countries around the world, and the threat to tighten sanctions on Russia in particular. Centrus' role as an importer of uranium, and Russia's role as a primary source of most uranium for nuclear fuel, puts Centrus in an awkward position here.
Second, Fluor hinted today at plans to start selling shares in its own advanced reactor-building subsidiary, NuScale Power. Investors may take this as a cue that the momentum trading frenzy in nuclear stocks could be nearing an end.
Finally, uranium prices are down about 10% from their recent high hit in late June -- and have stayed down for most of the month of July, a second suggestion that atomic power might not be the next big thing.
Should you sell Centrus stock?
All that said, Centrus doesn't look to me anywhere near as risky as other nuclear stocks. It's got more cash than debt on its balance sheet, is generating positive free cash flow, and is earning decent profits -- $106.5 million over the past year.
While hardly cheap at 35 times earnings, it's also hardly the most expensive nuclear stock in this industry. I expect Centrus shares to recover quickly.

Nuclear's Moment: Securing US AI Supremacy

In trading on Tuesday, the iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF is outperforming other ETFs, up about 4.4% on the day. Components of that ETF showing particular strength include shares of Dream Finders Homes, up about 7.5% and shares of Quanex Building Products, up about 6.7% on the day.
And underperforming other ETFs today is the Uranium ETF, down about 1.7% in Tuesday afternoon trading. Among components of that ETF with the weakest showing on Tuesday were shares of Denison Mines, lower by about 2.7%, and shares of F3 Uranium, lower by about 2.7% on the day.

Can NuScale Power Lead in Clean Energy and Boost Revenue Growth?

Shares of Centrus Energy (NYSEMKT: LEU), a specialist in enriching uranium for use as fuel in nuclear reactors, tumbled 4.7% through 12:50 p.m. ET Wednesday after one of its partners announced some disconcerting news.
Nuclear power plant start-up Oklo, which had previously signed a memorandum of understanding agreeing to accept high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) supplies from Centrus once its reactors are running, is now teaming up with two other nuclear start-ups. Privately held Hexium and privately held and Bill Gates backed TerraPower, will, along with Oklo, "leverage advanced laser enrichment technology to build a scalable U.S. nuclear fuel supply for advanced reactors."

Et tu, Oklo?
Oklo's desire to team up with a heavyweight like TerraPower is understandable. For a cash-strapped nuclear start-up, it may pay to be on the same team as a company with a backer as well heeled as Gates. Also, Hexium's new technology for enriching uranium may hold advantages over Centrus'.
That being said, Oklo's joining a new team does have the potential to leave Centrus in the lurch. We don't know at this time whether Hexium's tech will pan out nor, if it does, whether Oklo will still proceed to buy HALEU uranium from Centrus as well as from Hexium.
But if it doesn't then this could mean Centrus has just lost a customer that it was counting on keeping.
Is Centrus stock now a sell?
Don't be too quick to pull the sell trigger on Centrus, though. Just because Oklo thinks Hexium will work out as a partner doesn't mean it's right. Centrus is at least a known quantity and an established enriching company already.
It's also profitable, earning more than $100 million over the last 12 months, generating positive free cash flow, free of net debt -- and potentially, a buy.

Why Centrus Energy Stock Plunged Today

Steel Dynamics, Inc. STLD has issued earnings guidance for the second quarter of 2025 in the $2.00 to $2.04 per share range. The company's first-quarter 2025 earnings were $1.44 per share, while second-quarter 2024 earnings were $2.72.
Profitability from the company's steel operations is forecast to be much higher than in the first quarter, as metal spreads widened across the platform, with average realized steel pricing rising faster than scrap raw material costs. Long product steel shipments increased sequentially in the quarter, but flat rolled volumes fell slightly due mostly to an inventory overhang from coated flat rolled steel imports. The energy, non-residential building, automotive and industrial sectors continue to drive demand. Steel division’s pretax earnings were lowered by about $32 million in the second quarter of 2025 because of a noncash write-off of consumable assets.
Earnings from the company's metals recycling operations are forecast to remain stable sequentially in the second quarter, with higher shipments offsetting lower realized pricing.
Earnings from the company's steel fabrication operations are projected to be lower in the second quarter than in the previous quarter, owing to consistent shipments along with metal spread compression as steel raw material costs rose and the average realized sales price fell slightly. The pace of order activity grew in the quarter, and the order backlog strengthened, stretching into 2025 with attractive related pricing. The commercial, data center, manufacturing, warehouse and healthcare sectors were the primary drivers of demand.
The aluminum team is continuing to successfully commission the company's Columbus, MS, aluminum flat rolled products mill and San Luis Potosi satellite recycled slab facility. In January, the team successfully cast its first aluminum ingot in Mississippi, and in March, it did the same in Mexico. The company continues to expect to begin shipping material in mid-2025.
Shares of Steel Dynamics have lost 0.4% over the past year compared with a 31.8% decline of its industry.

STLD Issues Q2 Guidance, Expects Higher Steel Operations Earnings

Centrus Energy (NYSEMKT: LEU) attracted the right kind of energy on the stock exchange Friday. The company's shares closed that session 5% higher, after it published news of an important contract renewal. That pop looked particularly impressive when matched against the S&P 500's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) trajectory, which dipped into the red with a 0.2% decline.
An energetic extension
Before market open that morning, Centrus divulged that the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) exercised its option to extend the company's contract to produce for it high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU). The extension now runs through June 30, 2026.

HALEU is a type of nuclear fuel that has a level of enrichment considered most suitable for current nuclear reactor technology, including the small nuclear reactors (SMRs) that have recently come into vogue.
In what's probably not a coincidence, Centrus' latest news comes barely a week after its business partner Oklo was tapped to build and operate a nuclear plant to supply heat and electricity to an Air Force base in Alaska. The two companies have a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in place for Centrus to supply HALEU for Oklo's projects.
The trend is its friend
In its press release on the contract extension, Centrus added that the DoE holds options for further extensions to the existing contract. It could opt to keep Centrus's HALEU supply going for as much as a further eight years.
So it's not only good news that a major business for the company has a longer runway, but it's looking for more as time goes by. Assuming President Trump's embrace of nuclear energy remains in place (and possibly outlives his administration), Centrus will be in a very good position indeed.
