Kraft Heinz's (NASDAQ: KHC) 6.6% dividend yield can make a significant difference in a portfolio for dividend investors seeking income. Of course, many investors are skeptical of high dividend yields -- and for good reason: high dividend yields are often the result of a stock being under pressure. And, in this case, that is exactly what has happened. As of this writing, shares are down more than 20% year to date and over 30% over the last five years, as investor appetite for the stock has declined during a period of deteriorating sales trends.
But with the dividend stock's valuation now at bargain levels, and the company making some big structural and leadership changes, is it now finally time to buy?

Here are three reasons why I think Kraft Heinz stock may be worth a spot in dividend investors' portfolios today.
1. Strong free cash flow
Year to date, Kraft Heinz's free cash flow (the company's cash flow from regular operations less capital expenditures) has come in at $2.5 billion, up 23.3% year over year. This easily covers the company's $1.4 billion in total dividend payments over this same period.
This gap between free cash flow and dividends paid indicates that the company's dividend payout is likely sustainable, as it's being easily funded by the cash left over after the business has covered both regular operations and capital expenditures.
Further, it's worth noting how this substantial cash flow is impressive considering the sales backdrop. Kraft Heinz's year-to-date sales fell 2.3% year over year. So, while investors have good reason to worry about Kraft Heinz's sales trends, the company can be praised for its ability to generate cash. Kraft Heinz is a cash cow.
2. A cheap valuation
And shares are cheap. This is not only evident by the stock's dividend yield of 6.6% but also by the fact that shares currently trade at just eight times trailing-12-month free cash flow.
A valuation like this suggests investors essentially have zero growth expectations for the company. In other words, the stock could likely provide a reasonable return for investors from here just by maintaining its current sales and free cash flow levels.
3. Share repurchases remain meaningful
But dividends aren't the only way Kraft Heinz is returning cash to shareholders. It's doing it indirectly via dividends, too. In 2024, the company repurchased $988 million of its shares. And in the first nine months of 2025, it has repurchased another $435 million and said it had about $1.5 billion remaining under its current repurchase authorization. For a company with a market capitalization of under $29 billion as of this writing, repurchases like this make a material difference in reducing share count and increasing the ownership stake of each share of its investors.
Impressively, the company is returning a substantial portion of its free cash flow back to shareholders both directly and indirectly while still producing excess cash flow beyond these payments and repurchases.
Meanwhile, there are both opportunities and risks with the company's recent announcement to separate into two companies: Global Taste Elevation Co. and North American Grocery Co. While management says the move will create two focused companies "to accelerate profitable growth and unlock shareholder value," it's always possible that things don't go as well as hoped.
With the Kraft Heinz split not expected to close until the second half of 2026, investors will need to get comfortable with uncertainty in the meantime. Of course, the stock is arguably already priced for uncertainty -- and that's why I think now is a good time for investors to scoop up shares of this high-yielding dividend stock. Still, investors interested in buying the stock should keep their position small, given the risks associated with the strategic split not going as well as management hopes.

Is It Finally Time to Buy This Dividend Stock Now That It Has a 6.6% Dividend Yield?

Top consumer stocks often become some of the best long-term performers in the market. When looking at history, one can see how consumer names such as Home Depot and Booking Holdings often made investors hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars on relatively small investments.
Unfortunately, such successes do not mean all consumer stocks make good long-term holds. As investors reevaluate their portfolios for 2026, it might be time to part ways with three well-known but struggling consumer stocks.

1. Nike
Nike (NYSE: NKE) has long succeeded in the highly competitive sports apparel market. Its focus on innovating to improve athletic performance, as well as investments in branding, marketing, and data, helped make it an industry leader.
However, changing consumer tastes and macroeconomic conditions have weighed on the stock. Amid those challenges, rising competition from Adidas, Under Armour, and other emerging brands has also reduced sales.
Additionally, Nike surrendered a key competitive advantage when it moved exclusively to direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales and handed valuable shelf space to competitors. Nike has since worked to reestablish its relationships with retailers, but it has not fully recovered from this misstep.
In the second quarter of fiscal 2026 (ended Nov. 30), revenue was up by only 1%. That improved over fiscal 2025, when revenue dropped by 10%. Also, net income for fiscal Q2 fell 32% to $792 million as expense growth outpaced the increase in revenue.
With that, Nike stock has steadily slid over the last five years, and despite its lower price, the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 34 shows this is still a relatively expensive stock. Considering the heavy competition it faces and the uncertain prospects for a recovery, it might be time to consider running away from this stock.
2. Starbucks
The highly competitive nature of the coffee market may finally have caught up to Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX). The company has struggled to move on from the leadership of the company's longtime CEO, Howard Schultz.
Increasing complaints about high prices, slow service, and poor in-store experiences have cost it both business and prestige. Also, once-happy employees have unionized in increasing numbers, even as rising labor costs squeeze margins. Moreover, its market appears saturated in the U.S., forcing it to pursue opportunities in riskier markets such as China.
To address those issues, Starbucks hired Chipotle's successful former CEO, Brian Niccol, to turn it around. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 (ended Sept. 28), revenue grew by 6% yearly, an improvement from the last fiscal year when revenue declined.
Still, expenses grew faster than revenue, and one-time restructuring charges also weighed on the bottom line. That led to a net income of just $133 million, an 85% decline from year-ago levels. Not surprisingly, such performance may explain why the stock is down over the last five years.
Additionally, while a one-time charge skewed its P/E ratio higher to 54, its forward P/E ratio of 37 means its stock still trades at a premium. Given that valuation and the ongoing struggles of Starbucks stock, it may be a good time for investors to seek opportunities elsewhere.
3. Kraft Heinz
Another consumer stock that has struggled is Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ: KHC). Admittedly, its discounted stock price and 6.6% dividend yield may appear too good to ignore.
Unfortunately, that high yield points to problems rather than an opportunity. The merger of Kraft and Heinz that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway once advocated has been a failure by Buffett's own admission.
Despite that track record, the planned split of Kraft and Heinz has drawn criticism from Buffett and his successor, Greg Abel, an action Buffett has typically avoided with his holdings.
Buffett may have a point, as the split is unlikely to address core problems, such as rising consumer backlash against processed foods and increased competition from private-label products.
Also, its struggles led to Kraft Heinz slashing its dividend in 2019, and the continuing challenges could bring another dividend cut, putting further pressure on the stock.
In the third quarter of 2025, net sales dropped 3% annually, a trend that has been in place since 2023. Even though it earned $615 million in Q3 2025, that only improved due to the lack of impairment losses that hurt profitability in 2024.
Indeed, one bright spot about its challenges is its P/E ratio of 12, an earnings multiple that could tempt some investors. Still, considering the years of struggles and the uncertain prospects of the upcoming separation, Kraft Heinz is one Buffett holding that investors should probably avoid.

3 Hot Consumer Stocks to Leave Behind in 2026

Investors in Kraft Heinz Co (Symbol: KHC) saw new options become available today, for the February 2026 expiration. The put contract at the $23.00 strike price has a current bid of 5 cents. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for LTM's 2026 revenues and EPS indicates increases of 10.1% and 17.8%, respectively, from the year-ago period's reported levels. The stock is down 65% over the last decade, and management is now turning to a breakup to create value, separating the company into North American Grocery Co, which will hold staples like Oscar Mayer and Kraft and Staples, and Global Taste Elevation Co, which contains Heinz, Philadelphia, and Kraft Mac & Cheese, among others.
Buffett also dismissed that move, saying it does nothing to fix the underlying business.
Investors who are understandably frustrated with Kraft Heinz might want to consider a different consumer staples stock like Costco (NASDAQ: COST), which is not only a major customer of Kraft Heinz but also a top performer on the stock market, up 440% over the last decade.
Sell Kraft Heinz, Buy Costco
Kraft Heinz faces a problem that has dogged many packaged food companies in recent years. Consumer tastes are shifting away from unhealthy, processed foods.
A stock like Costco can offer protection from the economic cycle in the same way that food staples like Kraft Heinz traditionally do, because Costco makes most of its revenue from groceries. The company has a recession-proof business model because it counts on membership fees for most of its profit, selling its merchandise at near cost to entice customers.
Costco also has an unbeatable track record of growth among brick-and-mortar retailers as it continues to grow same-store sales, open new stores, and add members.
In its most recent quarter, Costco reported 6.4% comparable sales growth, which included 20.5% e-commerce growth, showing it's tapping into online sales even as it has mostly avoided delivery.
It's a good time to buy the stock as well because shares have pulled back from their earlier peak, down 21% from where they were at the start of the year, even as the business results remain solid.
Costco now trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 45.6, which is a premium valuation, but it's earned that. The retailer won't match Kraft Heinz's dividend yield, but it has a history of rewarding investors with special dividends every few years and should continue to do so.
Overall, if you're looking for a combination of safety and growth, it's hard to beat Costco.

Forget Kraft Heinz: Buy This Unstoppable Consumer Staple Leader Instead

Investors in Kraft Heinz Co (Symbol: KHC) saw new options begin trading this week, for the February 2026 expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the KHC options chain for the new February 2026 contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $22.50 strike price has a current bid of 28 cents. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $22.50, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $22.22 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of KHC, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $24.52/share today.
Because the $22.50 strike represents an approximate 8% discount to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the put contract would expire worthless. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 80%. Turning to the calls side of the option chain, the call contract at the $25.00 strike price has a current bid of 88 cents. If an investor was to purchase shares of KHC stock at the current price level of $24.52/share, and then sell-to-open that call contract as a "covered call," they are committing to sell the stock at $25.00. Considering the call seller will also collect the premium, that would drive a total return (excluding dividends, if any) of 5.55% if the stock gets called away at the February 2026 expiration (before broker commissions). Of course, a lot of upside could potentially be left on the table if KHC shares really soar, which is why looking at the trailing twelve month trading history for Kraft Heinz Co, as well as studying the business fundamentals becomes important. Considering the fact that the $25.00 strike represents an approximate 2% premium to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the covered call contract would expire worthless, in which case the investor would keep both their shares of stock and the premium collected. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 55%. I can understand why some investors may be interested in General Mills (NYSE: GIS) stock at the moment. So far this year, the share price of this processed and packaged foods company has fallen more than 26%. This is in contrast to the S&P 500 index, which is up 15.6% over this same time frame.
Following this pullback, General Mills' stock now trades at a historically low valuation and boasts a forward dividend yield of around 5.2%. Despite these positive indicators, there may be a better choice among packaged food stocks in terms of yield, value, and rebound potential.

Why General Mills is not necessarily a strong opportunity
I can see why you might find good value in General Mills shares. Trading at a forward P/E of just under 13, the stock trades at a discount to other packaged foods companies like Nestle and Mondelez International, both of which trade at forward multiples of around 17.
Historically, General Mills has traded at a valuation comparable to its peers. However, the current discount makes sense, namely because the company continues to experience a growth slump. Customers have cut back on its branded products in favor of private label alternatives.
That's not to say lackluster results will persist, but it may be too early to say a turnaround is in motion. Management just launched a new cost reduction program and is exploring ways to jump-start a resurgence in sales growth. Even so, sell-side analyst estimates still indicate weak revenue and earnings growth for the next fiscal year.
What makes this competitor's shares a better buy
Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ: KHC) has turned out to be a poor long-term investment, and don't just take my word for it. Warren Buffett has said it as well, when discussing Berkshire Hathaway's ill-fated investment in the company.
However, past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results -- especially given Kraft Heinz's upcoming split into two separate entities. One of these two entities will own Kraft Heinz's faster-growing brands, including Heinz condiments. The second entity will consist of slower-growing brands.
After the stock spinoff happens during the second half of 2026, the faster-growing segment could experience valuation expansion. Even if the slower-growing segment's valuation holds steady, the net result for investors in both companies could prove positive.
Kraft Heinz has this strong potential catalyst while also beating General Mills in terms of value and yield. Kraft Heinz trades for under 10 times forward earnings, a moderate discount to General Mills. This packaged food stock also has a forward dividend yield of over 6.5%.
The verdict on General Mills vs. Kraft Heinz
There could still be a scenario in which both of these packaged food stocks languish in the coming year due to the ongoing macroeconomic challenges. If inflation persists, everyday families may make a further shift away from branded food products.
However, if you believe inflation will normalize in the coming year, Kraft Heinz may be the better choice. If you haven't already bought General Mills, consider skipping it in favor of this stock.
