A month has gone by since the last earnings report for B&G Foods (BGS). Shares have lost about 8.4% in that time frame, underperforming the S&P 500.
Will the recent negative trend continue leading up to its next earnings release, or is B&G Foods due for a breakout? Before we dive into how investors and analysts have reacted as of late, let's take a quick look at the latest earnings report in order to get a better handle on the important catalysts.
B&G Foods Q1 Earnings Meet Estimates, Fiscal 2026 View Raised
B&G Foods posted first-quarter fiscal 2026 results, wherein the bottom line came in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate, but declined year over year. The top line was pressured by recent divestitures, partially offset by modest growth in the base business.
BGS’ Q1 Performance: Key Metrics and Insights
B&G Foods reported adjusted earnings of 8 cents per share, up 100% from 4 cents in the year-ago quarter. The metric came in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
Net sales declined 3.9% year over year to $408.9 million in the first quarter of 2026 from $425.4 million in the prior-year period. The decrease was mainly due to the divestitures of the Green Giant U.S. frozen, Le Sueur U.S. and Don Pepino businesses. This was partially offset by growth in base business net sales, contributions from the co-manufacturing agreement and partial-month sales from the College Inn and Kitchen Basics brands.
The company’s base business net sales rose 2.8% year over year to $365.1 million from $355.2 million, reflecting gains in volume, pricing and mix. The base business gain provided a clearer read on underlying demand. Base business net sales growth was driven by a 1.9% lift from higher volume, a 0.5% benefit from net pricing and product mix and a 0.5% positive impact from foreign currency.
B&G Foods' Margin & Cost Performance
On an adjusted basis, gross profit was $84.6 million, down 6.6% from $90.6 million in the prior-year period. Adjusted gross margin was 20.7% compared with 21.3% in the prior-year quarter.
Selling, general and administrative expenses increased 2.2% year over year to $50.2 million from $49.1 million and represented 12.3% of net sales, up 70 basis points year over year from 11.6% in the prior-year period, as acquisition/divestiture-related and other non-recurring expenses rose meaningfully.
Adjusted EBITDA declined 2.5% year over year to $57.6 million from $59.1 million in the prior-year period. However, adjusted EBITDA margin improved slightly to 14.1% of net sales compared with 13.9% in the prior-year period.
BGS' Spices Business Led Segment Growth
Specialty: Net sales declined 2.7% year over year to $130.8 million from $134.4 million, primarily due to the Don Pepino divestiture. Adjusted EBITDA fell 22.1% year over year to $26.1 million from $33.5 million, impacted by the divestiture, higher raw material costs, increased manufacturing expenses as a percentage of sales and tariff-related pressures.
Meals: Net sales increased 0.9% year over year to $107.1 million from $106.1 million, supported by contributions from the College Inn and Kitchen Basics acquisition, along with favorable pricing and product mix. However, adjusted EBITDA declined 20.1% year over year to $19.9 million from $25 million, due to higher raw material, manufacturing, trade spending and direct marketing costs.
Frozen & Vegetables: Net sales declined 23.7% year over year to $71 million from $93.1 million, primarily due to the Green Giant U.S. frozen and Le Sueur U.S. divestitures. However, Green Giant Canada's net sales increased 16.4%. Adjusted EBITDA surged 411.2% year over year to $4.6 million from a loss of $1.5 million, driven by lower raw material and manufacturing costs, favorable foreign currency impacts and benefits from the new Green Giant U.S. frozen co-manufacturing agreement.
Spices & Flavor Solutions: Net sales increased 9.1% year over year to $100.1 million from $91.7 million, driven by higher volumes, favorable pricing and product mix. Adjusted EBITDA rose 13.1% year over year to $29.7 million from $26.3 million, supported primarily by volume growth and, to a lesser extent, improved pricing, partially offset by higher raw material costs, particularly for garlic and black pepper, along with tariff-related impacts.
B&G Foods’ Financial Position
BGS ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $64.5 million. Long-term debt, net of current portion, stood at $2,000 million. Net cash provided by operating activities was $23.6 million in the first quarter.
Management announced that, beginning with the dividend payment declared on May 12, 2026, and payable on July 30, 2026, the intended annual dividend rate for its common stock will be reduced from 76 cents per share to 38 cents per share. Based on the revised dividend rate and the current share count, aggregate dividend payments are expected to total approximately $46 million in fiscal 2026 and $30.8 million in fiscal 2027.
B&G Foods Raises 2026 Guidance
The company revised its fiscal 2026 outlook upward following the quarter and recent transactions. Management now expects net sales of $1.735 billion to $1.775 billion from the previous guided range of $1.655 billion to $1.695 billion, and adjusted EBITDA is expected to be in the range of $275 million to $290 million from the previous guided range of $265 million to $275 million.
The company also lifted its adjusted earnings per share view to a range of 57.5 cents to 67.5 cents from the previously guided range of 55 cents to 65 cents. The updated guidance incorporates the impact of one fewer reporting week in fiscal 2026 compared with fiscal 2025, reflects completed divestitures and the College Inn and Kitchen Basics acquisition, and excludes the pending Green Giant Canada divestiture.

Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) has a new CEO this year, with Greg Abel taking over from Warren Buffett, and there have already been some significant changes in the company's portfolio. While the investing strategy and discipline may be the same, there have been some notable changes in just the first quarter of 2026. Berkshire added a big position in Delta
Buffett has never been a big fan of airlines. In Berkshire's 2007 shareholder letter, he outlined his reasons for not liking them: "The worst sort of business is one that grows rapidly, requires significant capital to engender the growth, and then earns little or no money. Think airlines."
That's why Berkshire's move to buy around 40 million shares of Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) this past quarter was particularly noteworthy, as it wasn't the type of move Buffett may have made. And at nearly 1% of Berkshire's portfolio, it's not a terribly small position, either. It comes at an interesting time, given that oil prices are up and demand for travel could be lower for the foreseeable future due to not only rising costs but also adverse economic conditions.
Delta is, however, a leading airline and has performed well over the years, and could arguably be a good investment to hold on to for the long term. But Berkshire didn't exactly buy low -- the stock is up 66% in the past five years, making this a bit of a surprising move for the company, given both Delta's rising valuation and the industry that it's in.
It tripled its stake in Alphabet
Something I definitely didn't expect to see so quickly was a top tech company like Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) becoming one of Berkshire's top holdings. While I thought it was possible, I didn't expect it to happen so soon. But at just under 7%, Alphabet now accounts for more of Berkshire's portfolio than Chevron and Occidental Petroleum. It's the fifth-largest holding after Berkshire tripled its position in the tech giant.
Alphabet may be the clearest example of a change in the mix of stocks at Berkshire, potentially reflecting a greater acceptance and focus on tech. While Apple is the leading stock in Berkshire's portfolio, its days of leading the tech sector are long gone. Alphabet, however, gives Berkshire investors more exposure to artificial intelligence and is more of a classic tech investment than Apple, which is why the move to significantly increase its position was particularly noteworthy for Berkshire.
And like Delta, it isn't a terribly cheap stock. Alphabet is trading at an all-time high, and its price-to-earnings multiple is 29. This is another move I wouldn't have expected Buffett to make.
Berkshire dumped many stocks, but Kraft wasn't one of them
There was speculation earlier in the year that Berkshire might exit its position in Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ: KHC), which has long been a staple in its portfolio, but that didn't end up happening. Kraft was contemplating a breakup of its business, but eventually abandoned the idea.
The move to keep Kraft is puzzling, given that Berkshire exited its position in many stocks, including UnitedHealth Group, Mastercard, and Domino's Pizza, among others. These are businesses that arguably look to be in better shape than Kraft, and yet, Berkshire decided to remain invested in the struggling food company.
It may be a sign that Berkshire is more open to hanging onto Kraft as an investment now that it's no longer looking to break up. However, with the company facing considerable headwinds, it's a riskier-looking investment than the stocks that Berkshire exited this past quarter, which is why it's surprising to see Kraft surviving such a mass exodus. In the past five years, Kraft's stock has declined by a staggering 46%, making it one of Berkshire's worst holdings over that stretch.
Do these moves make Berkshire's stock a better buy?
Berkshire's stock is down 4% this year as investors grapple with the reality of Buffett no longer leading the company. The moves Berkshire made this quarter don't necessarily make the business a whole lot better or worse, but they do indicate a shift in strategy, where the company may be more willing to pay higher prices for stocks and venture into new opportunities. For long-term investors, the stock can still be a great buy and an effective way to diversify your portfolio.

The 3 Most Surprising Moves Berkshire Hathaway Made in Q1 Under New CEO Greg Abel

Berkshire didn't start investing in Alphabet until last year, but it's already one of the conglomerate's biggest positions.
Warren Buffett's retirement as CEO of the conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB) drew a lot of questions, particularly around its vaunted investment portfolio. Would the company's buy-and-hold investment philosophy change under the stewardship of Buffett's successor, Greg Abel? And how would the makeup of the company's $330 billion portfolio change?
Now we've got some answers. Berkshire Hathaway made its 13-F quarterly filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the period ending March 31, making it Berkshire's first 13-F under Abel's leadership. Berkshire opened new positions in retailer Macy's and airline Delta Air Lines. And it closed long-term positions in such stalwarts such as Mastercard, Visa, Charter Communications, and Pool.

But I was most struck by two significant trades of Magnificent Seven stocks -- Berkshire Hathaway completely closed its position in Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), and purchased more than 3.5 million shares of Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) stock -- instantly making the Google parent one of Berkshire Hathaway's biggest holdings.
The moves are particularly striking, as Buffett had been a fan of Amazon stock for a long time and publicly lamented that he hadn't invested earlier. Meanwhile, Berkshire didn't open a position in Alphabet until the third quarter of 2025, making it one of the company's newest stocks.
Abel obviously likes Alphabet stock a lot more than Amazon these days. And I think he's absolutely right. Here's why.
Amazon and Alphabet have some things in common
Both these companies are members of the Magnificent Seven grouping of stocks -- seven of the biggest and most influential companies in the stock market. The Magnificent Seven group -- Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, Meta Platforms, plus Amazon and Alphabet -- represent more than a third of the S&P 500, and gained 875% from 2016 through 2025.
Both companies are major players in cloud computing and the build-out of artificial intelligence. Amazon Web Services is the largest name in the cloud infrastructure market with 28% ofglobal marketshare. Microsoft Azure is in second place with 21%, and Alphabet's Google Cloud is in third place with 14%.And both are growing quickly -- AWS brought in $37.5 billion in sales in the first quarter, up 28.5% from a year ago. Meanwhile, Google Cloud generated $20.1 billion in Q1 revenue, up 63% in a year.
However, some key differences make Alphabet better
The critical difference between the two companies is their businesses outside the cloud. Amazon is a juggernaut in e-commerce, with revenue of $104.1 billion in North America and $39.78 billion internationally. However, those two mammoth segments combined generated only $9.69 billion in operating income, less than Amazon's AWS ($14.16 billion).
Meanwhile, Alphabet reported $89.63 billion in revenue from Google Services, including internet search, Google Network ads, YouTube, and Google subscriptions. That segment generated $40.58 billion in operating income, compared with $6.59 billion from Google Cloud.
The bottom line? Alphabet's internet advertising dominance is much more profitable than Amazon's e-commerce. And that makes Alphabet a more appealing company.
The new Berkshire Hathaway portfolio

While Alphabet stock makes up 7% of Berkshire Hathaway's total investment portfolio, it's important to note that the company holds a relatively small stake, accounting for less than 1% of total Alphabet shares. In comparison, Berkshire Hathaway owns 22.2% of American Express, 27.5% of the consumer goods company Kraft Heinz, and 37.5% of the entertainment company Sirius XM.
Abel will surely make additional changes to the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio in the months to come, so investors may have more surprises ahead. But the new CEO's preference for Alphabet over Amazon stock right now couldn't be clearer.

Berkshire Hathaway's Greg Abel Thinks Alphabet Is a Better Magnificent Seven Stock Than Amazon. Here's Why He's Right.

Looking at the universe of stocks we cover at Dividend Channel, in trading on Monday, shares of Kraft Heinz Co (Symbol: KHC) were yielding above the 7% mark based on its quarterly dividend (annualized to $1.6), with the stock changing hands as low as $22.82 on the day. Dividends are particularly important for investors to consider, because historically speaking dividends have provided a considerable share of the stock market's total return. To illustrate, suppose for example you purchased shares of the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) back on 12/31/1999 — you would have paid $146.88 per share. Fast forward to 12/31/2012 and each share was worth $142.41 on that date, a decrease of $4.67/share over all those years. But now consider that you collected a whopping $25.98 per share in dividends over the same period, for a positive total return of 23.36%. Even with dividends reinvested, that only amounts to an average annual total return of about 1.6%; so by comparison collecting a yield above 7% would appear considerably attractive if that yield is sustainable. U.S. stocks ended sharply higher on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 closing above the 7,300 mark for the first time, on hopes that the United States and Iran could reach a peace deal soon and robust earnings reports from a fresh batch of companies. All three major indexes ended in positive territory.
How Did The Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) jumped 1.2% or 612.34 points, to close at 49,910.59 points.
The S&P 500 added 1.5% to end at 7,365.12 points. Industrial and tech stocks were the biggest gainers.
The Industrials Select Sector SPDR (XLI) gained 2.6%. The Information Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK) rose 2.7%. The Materials Select Sector SPDR (XLB) rose 1.7%. Nine of the 11 sectors of the benchmark index ended in negative territory.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced 2% to finish at 25,838.94 points.
The fear gauge, CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), was up 0.06% to 17.39. Advancers outnumbered decliners on the S&P 500 by a 1.7-to-1 ratio. A total of 18.8 billion shares were traded on Wednesday, higher than the last 20-session average of 17.6 billion.
On the Nasdaq, there were 186 new highs and 92 new lows. On the S&P 500, there were 46 new 52-week highs and 21 new lows.
Stocks Rally on Hopes of U.S.-Iran Deal
Iran on Wednesday said that it was reviewing the new proposal from the United States, while multiple sources claimed both nations were about to reach a deal and sign a one-page memorandum in a bid to end the ongoing conflict.
Bigger issues like Iran’s nuclear program will be decided later. Stocks rallied following the news but came off their highs after President Donald Trump said that the agreement was “not certain.”
However, investors mostly remained hopeful that the war would end soon, sending stocks on a rally. Oil prices fell further. The West Texas Intermediate futures fell 7.03%, to settle at $95.08 per barrel.
Also, robust earnings from a batch of tech companies lifted investors’ sentiment, further boosting the rally. Wednesday’s rally was driven by Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Shares of Advanced Micro Devices surged 18.6% after the company reported first-quarter 2026 earnings of $1.37 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.30 per share.
Shares of The Kraft Heinz Company (KHC) rose 2.4% after the company reported first-quarter 2026 earnings of $0.58 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.5 per share.
Economic Data
Private payrolls increased to a 15-month high in April. Automatic Data Processing, Inc.’s (ADP) national employment report showed that private payrolls increased 109,000 in April, its biggest gain since January 2025. This follows a downwardly revised gain of 61,000 job additions in March.

Suncor Energy's Board of Directors has approved a quarterly dividend of $0.60 per share on its common shares, payable June 25, 2026 to shareholders of record at the close of business on June 4, 2026.
Kraft Heinz announced today that the Company's Board of Directors declared a regular quarterly dividend of $0.40 per share of common stock payable on June 26, 2026, to stockholders of record as of June 5, 2026.
Enbridge announced that its Board of Directors has declared a quarterly dividend of $0.9700 per common share, payable on June 1, 2026 to shareholders of record on May 15, 2026. The amount of the dividend is consistent with the March 1, 2026 dividend.
The board of directors of Dominion Energy has declared a quarterly dividend of 66.75 cents per share of common stock.
Dividends are payable on June 20, 2026, to shareholders of record at the close of business May 29, 2026.
This is the 393rd consecutive dividend that Dominion Energy or its predecessor company has paid holders of common stock. The company's last quarterly dividend was declared Jan. 23, 2026.
Emerson today reported results for its second quarter ended March 31, 2026 and updated its full year outlook for fiscal 2026. Emerson also declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.555 per share of common stock payable June 10, 2026 to stockholders of record on May 15, 2026.
