On Aug. 5, 2025, Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) released results for the company's fiscal fourth quarter, ending June 30, 2025. The artificial intelligence (AI) server maker's shares fell by over 20% on disappointing results and guidance.
Since then, the stock has started to retreat. However, perhaps the dust hasn't settled, and this could instead be the calm before the storm.

Three issues persist, all of which could continue to impact Supermicro's growth, profitability, and the value of its shares: falling market share, squeezed margins, and the threat of losing key customers.
Why SMCI stock tanked after earnings
On both revenue and earnings, Supermicro's Q4 FY2025 results fell short of analysts' expectations:

On a year-over-year basis, Supermicro's Q4 revenue increased by only 7.5%, a far slower pace than in prior quarters. Even worse, the company's adjusted EPS fell by 24% year over year, a wider-than-expected decline.
CEO Charles Liang may have blamed the revenue miss on delayed revenue recognition and the earnings miss on recent tariff hikes. Still, I believe the market took these disappointing results as a sign that the competition continues to get the better of Supermicro.
Alongside disappointing quarterly results, the company also released disappointing updates to guidance. Full-year revenue guidance of $33 billion, or 50% above reported FY2025 revenue, may sound impressive, but previously, the company was guiding for $40 billion in revenue for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026.
Furthermore, with Q1 FY2026 guidance calling for between $6 billion and $7 billion in revenue, it's questionable whether Supermicro can even hit its walked-back revenue target for the full year.
While the company's quarterly results fell short, its annual revenue came in ahead of expectations, growing by 47% over the prior fiscal year. Still, given the latest slowdown and decline in revenue and profitability, I'm skeptical that a rebound is just a few quarters away.
Supermicro's growth, profitability, and stock price remain under threat
Trading for around 25 times annual earnings, Supermicro trades at a premium to direct competitors like Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE). Dell and HPE both currently trade for 20 times earnings.
In the past, Supermicro's valuation premium made sense. After all, this company was an early mover, capitalizing on its strong ties with Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) to quickly bring out cutting-edge AI server products. However, since then, competitors have gained a greater edge.
In turn, this has led to a sharp decline in market share, a trend that is one of three reasons why I'm cautious about Supermicro stock right now. Between 2022 and 2024, the company's share of the AI server market fell from at least 80% to between 40% and 50%.
Further declines may lie ahead. Last month, analysts at Bank of America (BofA) argued that rivals Dell and HPE are better positioned to win new business from enterprise clients. This makes sense, given their existing relationships with such clients.
Additional market share losses could result in a further slowdown in sales growth, but that's not all. High competition could also place further pressure on margins, the second reason I'm concerned about this stock. In recent years, Supermicro's gross margins have shrunk from 18% to 9.5%.
An additional squeeze is possible. Back in June, analysts at KeyBanc argued that a lack of product differentiation points to Supermicro having to compete on price to sustain higher growth. The impact of this on margins could counter the positive impact of a sales resurgence.
To top it all off, there's another long-standing risk with Supermicro that also makes me concerned about future performance: the risk of losing major customers. Reportedly, key customers like CoreWeave and X.ai have started placing AI server orders with Dell. If these customers fully switch over to a competitor for their AI server needs, this could materially affect Supermicro's future revenue and earnings.
Bottom line: I'm sticking to the sidelines
If the aforementioned issues lead to an additional growth slowdown and/or drop in profitability, the impact on the price of Supermicro shares could be significant.
Over the past 12 months, this stock has traded for as low as $17.25 per share. Supermicro could retrace this past low if quarterly results continue to disappoint, management keeps walking back expectations, and SMCI's valuation premium to Dell and HPE continues to erode.
Given these risks, I'm waiting things out -- at least until subsequent developments emerge that help to assuage my concerns.

Commerce Bancshares' claim to fame is summed up in one number: 57. That's how many consecutive years its dividend has been increased, making it a Dividend King. It has the longest streak among U.S. banks.
After that fact, there's really nothing exciting about Commerce Bancshares. It's a regional bank operating around 300 branch and ATM locations in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
In other words, it's a pretty small bank. But given its small size, that also means it has plenty of room to keep expanding. Don't expect that to happen quickly; that's not the company's style.
On that front, however, management is setting the stage for expansion. It recently agreed to buy FineMark Holdings, a bank with 13 branches in Florida, Arizona, and South Carolina. But the key takeaway here is that Commerce Bancshares clearly knows how to survive hard times and grow steadily over the long term. Exciting? No. Reliable? Yes! The dividend yield is around 1.8%.
2. Toronto-Dominion Bank is getting back on track
If a boring bank like Commerce Bancshares isn't your speed, then how about one that just got in trouble with U.S. regulators? Toronto-Dominion Bank's U.S. operation was used to launder money for criminals. That led to a big fine, the need to revamp internal controls, and an asset cap in the U.S. market.
The asset cap effectively means that TD Bank, as it is more commonly known, won't be able to grow in the United States until regulators are happy with its internal controls. The dividend yield is 4.1%, compared to a bank sector average of 2.5%, which might make it more appealing to income seekers.
That said, TD Bank is a giant in Canada and has a long and proven track record of being run in a conservative fashion. But, at the same time, it has also proved adept at changing with the world around it.
Notably, it has paid a dividend since 1857. Raising its payout despite the U.S. issues was the most recent example of this, but the fact that it didn't cut its dividend during the Great Recession, when many of the largest U.S. banks did, is a bigger example. If stablecoins change the world, TD Bank is likely to find a way to adapt and even play in the space itself in some way.
3. Bank of Nova Scotia is changing its business model
Bank of Nova Scotia, normally shortened to Scotiabank, is the last bank up, and it offers the highest yield at 5.7%. Like TD Bank, Scotiabank hails from Canada, but its reach spans from its home country all the way down into Central and South America.
It had historically largely skipped over the U.S. market but has recently begun to change its model. The goal is to provide contiguous banking services from Mexico to Canada, which means Scotiabank needs to materially increase its scale in the U.S. market. To jump-start that effort, it recently bought a roughly 15% stake in KeyCorp.
The "key" to understanding the importance of this move is that it shows Scotiabank's ability to change, quickly, with the times. That will be an important skill if the world embraces stablecoins.
That said, Scotiabank has paid a dividend since 1833 -- even longer than TD Bank! And like TD Bank, Scotiabank didn't resort to a dividend cut during the deep 2007 to 2009 financial crisis and recession. If you buy it now, you can collect a huge yield from a bank that clearly knows how to survive and is willing to adjust its business when change is needed.
Stablecoins could be great, or maybe not
Some investors thrive buying the newest and most exciting things on Wall Street. Stablecoins would still fall into the category for most investors.
If you just can't get yourself to jump on the stablecoin bandwagon, you might be better off with a boring old bank like Dividend King Commerce Bancshares. If you prefer something a bit more exciting, you could step into high-yield TD Bank or Scotiabank. Both are proven survivors and offer attractive dividend yields today.

This fee growth was driven by higher investment banking and debt placement fees, as well as increased commercial mortgage servicing fees.
On the cost side, total noninterest expense (GAAP) increased 7.0% year-over-year in Q2 2025 to $1.15 billion, mainly due to higher personnel and technology investments. Notably, personnel expense rose 10.8% in Q2 2025, reflecting additional staff to support growth in fee-based business lines and higher incentive compensation for improved results. The bank also increased spending on computer processing and professional fees, primarily for technology-related investments.
Credit quality remains in focus. Net loan charge-offs -- a measure of loans unlikely to be collected -- rose to $102 million in Q2 2025, up 12.1% year-over-year, yet improved from the prior quarter. The provision for credit losses increased in Q2 2025 to cover loan growth, changes in loan types, and early signs of a softer economic outlook. Management noted it added $36 million to reserves in Q2 2025 as a prudent step. KeyCorp Matches EPS Expectations in Q2

KeyCorp’s KEY second-quarter 2025 earnings per share from continuing operations of 35 cents surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. The bottom line reflected a 40% jump from the prior-year quarter’s actual.
Results benefited from a rise in net interest income (NII) and non-interest income. The average loan balance increased sequentially, which was another positive. However, higher expenses and a rise in provisions were undermining factors.
Net income from continuing operations attributable to common shareholders was $387 million, up 63.3% year over year.
KEY’s Revenues Improve, Expenses Rise
Total revenues increased 20.9% year over year to $1.83 billion. Moreover, the top line beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.80 billion.
NII (on a tax-equivalent or TE basis) increased 27.9% on a year-over-year basis to $1.15 billion. The net interest margin (NIM) (TE basis) from continuing operations expanded 62 basis points (bps) to 2.66%. Both metrics benefited from the lower deposit costs, reinvestment of proceeds from maturing low-yielding investment securities, fixed-rate loans and swaps repricing into higher-yielding investments, the repositioning of the available-for-sale portfolio in the third and fourth quarters of 2024, and an improved funding mix.
These benefits were partially offset by the impact of lower interest rates on variable-rate earning assets, and lower loan balances. Our estimate for NII (TE) and NIM was $1.14 billion and 2.62%, respectively.
Non-interest income was $690 million, up 10% year over year. The rise was driven by an increase in almost all the components of fee income, except for corporate-owned life insurance income, consumer mortgage income, operating lease income and other leasing gains, and other income. Our estimate for the metric was $673.3 million.
Non-interest expenses increased 7% year over year to $1.15 billion. The rise was due to an increase in almost all cost components, except for operating lease expenses and other expenses. We projected the metric to be $1.16 billion.
KeyCorp’s Loans Rise & Deposits Slip
At the end of the second quarter, average total loans were $105.72 billion, up 1.3% from the previous quarter. We had anticipated average total loans of $105.52 billion.
Average total deposits were $147.45 billion, down marginally from the prior-quarter end. The fall was due to a reduction in higher-cost commercial client balances and retail CDs. Our estimate for the metric was $150.58 billion.
KEY’s Credit Quality: A Mixed Bag
The provision for credit losses was $138 million, up 38% year over year. Our estimate for provision for credit losses was $120.2 million.
Net loan charge-offs, as a percentage of average total loans, rose 5 bps year over year to 0.39%.
However, the allowance for loan and lease losses was $1.45 billion, down 6.5% from the prior-year quarter. Non-performing assets, as a percentage of period-end portfolio loans, other real estate-owned property assets, and other non-performing assets, were 0.66%, down 2 bps year over year.
KeyCorp’s Capital Ratios Improve
KEY's tangible common equity to tangible assets ratio was 7.8% as of June 30, 2025, up from 5.2% in the corresponding period of 2024. The Tier 1 risk-based capital ratio was 13.4%, up from 12.2%. The Common Equity Tier 1 ratio was 11.7%, up from 10.5% as of June 30, 2024.
