Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) has a radical vision that Wall Street once loved but now is losing faith in, apparently.
The vision? For that, you have to imagine a sky in the city: Picture, there, helicopter-like aircraft, sleek, electric, and quiet, taxiing folks to and from vertiports in the city. If you can see a lot of these electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in your make-believe sky, then you can also picture Joby in its heyday, maintaining strong margins on these flying cars. The faster and safer they whirl above traffic, the stronger the demand for air taxi services.

But now, the reality. For that, look at the skies above any American city: There are no eVTOLs flying commercially in the U.S. Joby may have built one of the most advanced flying taxi prototypes in the world today, but without proof that it can be mass-produced, investors have been a little less sure of its stock.
Increased hesitation toward Joby's business, whetted by a general skepticism toward speculative stocks today, has contributed to the air taxi designer's roughly 50% decline in 2026. And yet for those who can hold the stock long-term, I think today could be the entry that stamps a ticket to millionaire status. Here's one reason why.
Joby may be further along than investors realize
Five years ago, Morgan Stanley released a sweeping report on the future of eVTOLs and urban air mobility (UAM). Although the 50-page document has plenty of fascinating information, the most stirring among investors was a prediction that the total addressable market (TAM) for eVTOLs would reach $1 trillion by 2040 and $9 trillion by 2050.
That was only the base case, too. In Morgan Stanley's most bullish scenario, analysts forecast the global eVTOL and UAM market reaching $4.4 trillion by 2040 and $18.9 trillion by 2050.
So far, Joby hasn't done anything yet to rule out Morgan Stanley's base case. In fact, its technological and regulatory progress looks pretty consistent with it. Joby has demonstrated flights in New York City, it is gearing up for production with its manufacturing partner Toyota (NYSE: TM), and it's two years deep into the fourth of the FAA's five-stage process for Type Certification.
With FAA Type Certification, Joby's eVTOL design -- the S4 -- would meet the FAA's safety standards, which would be a massive step forward toward commercialization.
But here's where it gets interesting: Joby has made such immense progress that it hasn't ruled out the bull case scenario, either.
If you read the conditions that would create this bullish scenario, your eye might catch something interesting: "Economic rationale more clearly evident and taking a far larger share of surface transport market, bolstered by relatively more accommodative policy and path to certification."
And wasn't it just last September that Joby planned to "jump-start U.S. operations" through a White House eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), an initiative designed to accelerate commercial operations of eVTOLs in the U.S?
It is, of course, too early to say whether the eVTOL's TAD is on track for the $19 trillion bull case. But the situation today is much more optimistic than Morgan Stanley's bear case -- which combines unsuccessful technology and obstructive governmental policy -- and seems very supportive of the business Joby is trying to build.
For that, I think this year's sell-off will, in retrospect, look like a prime buying opportunity. Almost everything that matters still sits in front of Joby -- it needs FAA type certification more than anything -- but for risk-tolerant investors, a sizable position could be your ticket to millionaire status.

The electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry is no longer just a collection of futuristic concepts. Several companies now have aircraft in advanced testing, regulators are actively working toward certification, and commercial launches are beginning to take shape.
Of course, that doesn't mean every eVTOL stock deserves a place in your portfolio. But if I had to choose one today, I'd buy Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) and avoid Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR).

Buy: Joby Aviation
Joby has consistently stayed ahead of nearly every competitor in the industry. To date, the company has completed more than 50,000 miles of test flights, making it one of the most tested eVTOL developers in the world. It's also steadily progressing through the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) certification process, which remains the biggest hurdle before commercial service can begin.
Earlier this year, Joby began flying its first FAA-conforming production aircraft. This is a big deal because it's built to the same standards regulators expect for commercial certification. Joby isn't just building aircraft at this point. It's actively building an operating business.
The company currently has partnerships with Delta Air Lines to launch airport shuttle services in New York and Los Angeles and with Virgin Atlantic to bring similar services to the United Kingdom. It also acquired Uber Elevate several years ago, giving it an established software platform and customer relationships that should help commercial operations.
International expansion is underway, too. Joby has completed demonstration flights in Japan and the United Arab Emirates and expects Dubai to become one of its first commercial markets.
A healthy balance sheet
At the end of Q1, 2026, Joby reported approximately $1.1 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and investments. That gives management a lot of flexibility as it works toward commercialization without immediately returning to capital markets.
Yes, it's true that Joby is still losing money. Revenue remains minimal, and profitability is likely several years away. But among publicly traded eVTOL companies, Joby appears to have the strongest combination of technology, certification progress, strategic partnerships, and financial resources.
Avoid: Archer Aviation
Archer has made meaningful progress over the past year, but there are still some pretty serious execution risks. Indeed, the company has generated excitement through high-profile partnerships with United Airlines, Stellantis, and the U.S. military. Its Midnight aircraft continues to advance through flight testing, too.
Those are legitimate strengths, but the problem is that much of Archer's valuation already assumes successful execution. And like Joby, Archer has yet to generate meaningful commercial revenue. Its business still depends on obtaining FAA certification, scaling manufacturing, building charging infrastructure, training pilots, and convincing customers to adopt an entirely new transportation model. That's a long list of things that all have to go right.
Financially, Archer remains well funded, reporting roughly $1.7 billion in cash and cash equivalents. But scaling an aerospace manufacturing business isn't cheap. Production delays, certification setbacks, or slower-than-expected customer adoption could force additional fundraising and dilute existing shareholders.
There's also another concern. Unlike Joby, which intends to operate much of its own air taxi network, Archer relies more heavily on partners to commercialize its aircraft. That model could ultimately work, but it also gives Archer less direct control over customer relationships and long-term operating economics.
The better long-term investment
The eVTOL market has enormous potential. Morgan Stanley has estimated the industry could eventually exceed $1 trillion as urban air mobility expands into passenger transportation, cargo delivery, defense, and emergency services.
But don't confuse a promising industry with guaranteed winners. Joby appears to have established an early lead where it matters most: certification progress, operational testing, international expansion, and commercial partnerships. It also has one of the strongest balance sheets in the sector, reducing the likelihood of near-term shareholder dilution.
Archer could certainly become a successful company over time. If management executes flawlessly, today's valuation may eventually prove justified. But investing isn't about identifying companies that can succeed. It's about identifying companies with the highest probability of success. Today, Joby checks more of those boxes.
If you're looking for exposure to the growing eVTOL market, I'd buy Joby Aviation and leave Archer Aviation on the watch list until it proves it can turn promising technology into a sustainable business.

1 eVTOL Stock to Buy, and 1 to Avoid

When a high-growth stock drops below a psychological price level, like $10, investors naturally ask the same question: Has something gone wrong? In the case of Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY), the answer isn't as straightforward as many investors think.
The company hasn't reported a major operational setback. It continues to make progress toward commercializing its electric flying taxis, remains well-funded, and still expects to begin carrying passengers in 2026. So why has the stock fallen?

The answer has less to do with Joby Aviation's business and more with changes in investors' expectations.
Investors are no longer paying for potential alone
For years, Joby Aviation's investment story revolved around the possibility of air taxis making technological breakthroughs.
So far, things seem to be moving in the right direction. The company demonstrated successful flight tests, advanced through FAA certification, expanded manufacturing capacity, and built partnerships with companies such as Toyota Motor , Delta Air Lines, and Uber Technologies. Each milestone strengthened confidence that flying taxis could eventually become a reality.
But that was the past. Today, however, investors want something more tangible, that the business can generate revenue.
Joby Aviation is approaching the point where technological progress alone is no longer enough to drive the stock higher. Investors now want evidence that the company can begin commercial operations and turn years of research and development into a real business. And 2026 is the pivotal year when the company expects to launch its services across multiple U.S. cities.
That shift in expectations often happens as innovative companies move closer to commercialization. The market becomes less interested in what could happen and more interested in what will happen over the next few quarters.
Commercial success is still far from guaranteed
And here's the thing: Even if Joby launches commercial flights in 2026, the company will still have plenty to prove. Flying passengers is only the beginning. Joby must show that customers are willing to use the service regularly, ticket prices can support healthy margins, and its operations can scale safely and efficiently.
These questions matter because successful technology doesn't always become a successful business. It will require management to execute well across multiple fronts to build a viable business model.
And that's how Investors are beginning to evaluate Joby. Instead of asking whether flying taxis can work, they're asking whether they can generate sustainable revenue, profits, and, ultimately, attractive returns on capital.
The truth about profitability that investors should know
While it makes a lot of sense to include air taxis as part of future transportation infrastructure, it will still take years before the business turns a profit.
The main reason is that the company must continue to spend heavily on engineering, manufacturing, certification, and commercial preparation. Even if we assume the service goes live as planned, further investments will still be needed across the whole operation.
Thus, in today's market, where many investors prefer companies already generating cash flow rather than businesses still investing heavily for future growth, Joby Aviation (and its stock price) will likely see volatility in the near future.
What does it mean for investors?
Joby Aviation's decline below $10 doesn't necessarily mean its long-term investment thesis has broken. Instead, it reflects a market that has become more demanding.
Investors are no longer rewarding certification milestones and partnership announcements the way they once did. They now want evidence that Joby Aviation can launch commercial operations, attract paying customers, and build a profitable business. That's a much higher bar to meet.
For long-term investors, the opportunity remains compelling if Joby Aviation executes well over the next several years. But until the company begins converting technological progress into commercial success, the stock is likely to remain volatile.
In short, the stock is not for the faint-hearted.

Why Did Joby Aviation Stock Fall Below $10?

Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) companies Archer Aviation (NYSE:ACHR) and Beta Technologies (NYSE:BETA) just announced they are partnering with Macquarie Capital to bring standardized eVTOL charging hardware to as many as 250 air taxi sites across the U.S.
The companies dubbed the initiative America’s Consortium for Electric Skyways (ACES). They touted their charging standard as having been endorsed by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) and “adopted almost uniformly across the industry.”

“Almost uniformly?” That’s right: there’s one major player in the U.S. eVTOL space that doesn’t conform to this standard. And, unsurprisingly, it's Archer’s big rival Joby Aviation (NYSE:JOBY).
Here’s what this new charging network is likely to mean for Archer, Beta, Joby, and their shareholders.

A new standard
The Combined Charging Standard (CCS) for electric vehicles is a particular type of plug that allows a vehicle to charge using alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). It was once the standard for electric vehicle charging in the U.S., but is now being phased out in favor of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug, developed by Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) for use in its Supercharger system.
However, the global aviation consortium GAMA still supports the CCS standard for electric aircraft, believing that having a standardized plug is preferable to having different manufacturers each developing their own non-interoperable plugs.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what Joby had to do.
Square plug, round hole
Despite being a GAMA associate member, Joby didn’t design its eVTOLs to work with CCS plugs. Instead, it developed its own standard, the Global Electric Aviation Charging System (GEACS). In 2023, it made the GEACS specifications freely available to other companies in the industry.
There were two good reasons for Joby not to use CCS chargers. The first was that it designed its aircraft with distributed battery packs to provide redundancy for added safety. The GEACS system contains multiple DC channels, allowing for simultaneous charging of multiple battery packs. Archer’s and Beta’s systems concentrate their battery packs in a single location, so they don’t need this extra feature.

The second reason is that Joby’s GEACS includes a coolant exchange system, providing an additional mechanism to prevent the batteries from overheating during charging, which could reduce their lifespan. Archer utilizes an onboard thermal management system made by Honeywell International (NASDAQ:HON) that, in theory, keeps the batteries from overheating. Meanwhile, Beta uses a separate device called a Thermal Management System Cube to cycle coolant through the batteries during recharging.
You snooze, you lose
It’s not surprising that Archer and Beta – which are also both GAMA associate members – would agree to join forces to deploy a type of charger with a plug that their aircraft can use but which their major rival’s cannot.
It also makes sense that Archer and Beta would try to get a head start on deploying their preferred chargers at airports likely to offer eVTOL air taxi service. According to an Archer press release, up to 250 deployments will occur over the next decade at locations “including airports and vertiports in California, Texas, Florida, and New York.”
Would an airport that had already installed Beta’s CCS chargers actually prevent Joby eVTOLs from operating there due to a lack of charging infrastructure? It seems doubtful, but it might cause some headaches for Joby down the road. And of course, there’s no love lost between Archer and Joby at this point.
The takeaway
All the charging infrastructure in the world doesn’t matter if you don’t have an aircraft to charge. If Joby can get U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for its eVTOLs to operate before Archer can, it’ll probably be able to dictate its own charging infrastructure installation to airports where it’s providing service. The same is true for Archer if it can beat Joby to the punch.
While the collaboration between Archer and Beta to shut out Joby is a smart move for those two companies, in the long run, it’s going to be FAA approval and then the profitability of their business models that determine whether Archer, Beta, and Joby succeed or fail. Not their charging apparatus.

eVTOL Stocks Like Archer Aviation Team Up For New Charging Network

If you've been holding out on Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY), whether because of its lofty valuation or unfinished certification process, now might be a good time to take a second look at the beaten-down aviation stock.
Over the past month, Joby stock has lost about 21% of its value; year to date, about 47% has been shaved off. The company now has a $7.5 billion market capitalization, which still isn't cheap considering it could be years away from generating meaningful revenue.

Joby's steep, not to say vertical, decline isn't all that surprising. In fact, even the most bullish forecasts for the nascent electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) market have warned investors not to get too hung up on a slow regulatory process.
At today's price, I think Joby is looking like a long-term buy, and it's for similar reasons that investors are currently shying away from it.
Joby Aviation is moving forward, even if the stock is moving backward
In a nutshell, Joby Aviation is trying to build the first real air-taxi company in the U.S.
To that end, the company has more real-world proof than most of its eVTOL peers. It has logged tens of thousands of miles across its eVTOL fleet, is currently testing its FAA-conforming aircraft in preparation for Type Inspection Authorization (TIA), and has begun preparatory work with its partner Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM) to begin commercial production.
Joby has also partnered with Delta Air Lines and Uber Technologies, acquired Blade Air Mobility's passenger business, and is participating in a White House-backed eVTOL program, which could give it an opportunity to begin early operations in some states before the end of this year.
And yet the stock sinks. Not all that surprising, to be honest. Hype over Joby reached a fever pitch last year, when it and its rival Archer Aviation became two of the market's hottest speculative stocks, fueled by growing enthusiasm for flying cars and the prospect of future commercial launches.
Commercial launches are, to be sure, moving forward, just not as quickly as some bullish investors might have hoped. Its progress, nevertheless, is consistent with Morgan Stanley's long-standing warning that eVTOL technology would likely advance faster than the regulatory framework needed to commercialize it. In 2021, Morgan Stanley predicted that the global urban air mobility market could reach $1 trillion by 2040 and $9 trillion by 2050 in its base-case scenario (its bullish case sees the market at about $19 trillion by 2050). If Joby captured even a sliver of that market, its revenue growth could be enormous.
Is Joby Aviation stock a buy?
Wall Street seems to be dumping Joby because certification is taking time, but I think the slow progress was always a part of even the most bullish thesis. That, to me, is what makes Joby a compelling stock. Nothing has changed negatively for its business; indeed, its prospects have improved.
For aggressive investors with a long-term time horizon, Joby's progress makes it increasingly interesting. I would certainly treat it as a speculative play, but one that could deliver monster gains over the long run.

I have a starter position in Joby Aviation and will likely add to it over time, especially given the stock is down over 50% from its 52-week high. My favorite reason for considering the stock is that it is founder-led by JoeBen Bevirt, a serial inventor and entrepreneur. He holds dozens of patents and has made Joby his core focus for the last two decades, essentially building the company’s eVTOLs from scratch.
That said, Joby will likely remain a very high-risk, high-reward growth stock for at least a decade as it continues to add to its growing customer base, secure new flying certifications, and eventually consider integrating autonomous flying into its eVTOLs. Armed with a manufacturing joint venture with Toyota Motor Corporation and helmed by one of the more impressive founders of our era in the engineering niche, Joby will be a fun stock to watch over the years, but I wouldn’t recommend making a large bet on the stock just yet.

The electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) market is a tough one to invest in because it's in such an early stage. While there are multiple companies involved in the space and trying to convince investors they're the real deals, it's difficult, if not impossible, to predict which, if any, will lead the market in the next five to 10 years.
Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) is one of the promising players in the industry, and that's evident with its sizable valuation. Its market cap is nearly $9 billion -- more than double that of rival Archer Aviation. But investors have grown bearish about Joby's stock of late, as it's down more than 30% since the beginning of the year. Trading at around $9, investors may be torn about where the eVTOL stock will be headed from here on out: is it more likely to get to $15 or $5 this year?

Why has the bearishness taken over?
Joby's stock had been rising prior to the start of this year on the hope that its air taxis would soon commence operating activities. While that's still a possibility, it's notable that the stock began to go into a free fall in late January after Joby announced it was raising about $1.2 billion from the issue of common stock and convertible notes, raising flags over the unprofitable company's need to raise cash -- an issue that's likely to persist over the long haul.
While Joby has been showcasing its air taxi with test flights in New York City and Dubai, investors are still left waiting for approval from regulators, which would surely be the catalyst that lifts the stock higher. Joby has previously stated it expects to commence U.S. operations at some point this year. If that ends up happening, that could be what's needed for the stock to rally once more.
Joby's stock could be due for a rally, but it remains risky
Assuming that Joby does indeed obtain certification for its air taxis this year and begins commercial air taxi operations, the stock could quickly rally and make up for the losses it's incurred thus far in 2026. I believe that's a more probable scenario than it falling further down to $5 or lower, as the stock has been fairly stable over the past few months, and unless there's some more negative news to come out to cause its stock to crash further, I think a rally is more probable than a further decline.
That being said, this remains a fairly risky stock due to its uncertain future and the company inevitably incurring losses for the foreseeable future. But for growth-oriented investors who are willing to take on some risk, Joby's stock could make for an intriguing buy right now.

While there was little in the way of fresh, business-specific news driving the pullback, the stock saw a massive valuation decline as investors moved out of speculative growth stocks. As of this writing, the stock is now down roughly 47% over the last year.

Archer Aviation stock got crushed in June despite little news
June was a slow news month for Archer Aviation, which makes the stock's huge valuation decline in the month somewhat surprising. On the other hand, there were some macroeconomic catalysts that explain the big pullback.
For starters, investors broadly became more convinced that a move from the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates probably isn't coming any time soon -- and more concerned that the Fed could move to hike rates. The U.S. central banking authority uses rate increases to combat inflation, and accelerating inflation connected to rising energy prices due to the Iran war had investors worried last month that rate increases could arrive this year. That could be trouble for Archer stock.
Even after big sell-offs, Archer Aviation has a market capitalization of roughly $4.1 billion. Meanwhile, the company is valued at approximately 430 times this year's expected sales. Highly growth-dependent stocks tend to perform much better in low-interest rate environments, and they can get hit with huge pullbacks when rates start to rise.
Archer has regained some ground early in July
Archer Aviation stock has seen bullish momentum early in July's trading, with the stock up more than 9% in the month as of this writing. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 is up 0.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite is up roughly 0.3%.
In addition to bullish support for the broader market, Archer stock has climbed higher in conjunction with electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) industry news. On June 30, Joby Aviation announced that it had entered a new joint venture with Toyota to advance manufacturing capabilities for eVTOL aircraft.
While Joby is arguably Archer's biggest competitor, investors appear to view the new partnership as a positive indicator for the broader eVTOL industry. Archer has a similar partnership with Stellantis, and the team-up between Joby and Toyota seems to have investors feeling more bullish about auto manufacturers helping leading eVTOL players eventually reach profitability.

Why Archer Aviation Stock Plummeted Last Month But Is Gaining in July

The prospects for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) companies don't just depend on future orders or regulatory approvals; they also depend on securing their supply chains and ramping up production to meet expectations. That's why investors have reason to be positive about Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL) after it recently signed a long-term agreement with Astronics for power distribution systems for its Valo eVTOL. Is it enough to make the stock a buy?
Vertical Aerospace de-risks its business model
Not all eVTOL companies are made equal. While Joby Aviation is pursuing a vertically integrated model and developing its own technology, Boeing's Wisk is also relying on investment and technology from its parent company, and companies like Archer Aviation and Vertical Aerospace are heavily reliant on components from established companies.

In theory, at least, this should accelerate development and make it easier to ramp up production. That's why every time the U.K.'s Vertical Aerospace signs a long-term supply agreement, it helps de-risk the company's business model. It already has deals in place with Honeywell (flight control and management systems), Hyundai WIA (landing gear), and other specialist aerospace suppliers, with the recent deal adding low-voltage power distribution systems -- a critical part of an eVTOL.
Dilution risk remains
While execution risk has diminished somewhat with the deal, this is still a company burning cash and won't generate earnings until 2032, according to the Wall Street analyst consensus from S&P Global Market Intelligence. In other words, the $239 million-market cap company will need cash, which means significant dilution for existing investors is on the way.
On the company's lastearnings callin May, management said it had "short-term liquidity, together with anticipated draws under available facilities, expected to provide at least 12 months' runway." However, the good news is that it has access to financing of up to $850 million as part of an agreed-upon financial package with Yorkville Advisors Global.
The bad news is that Vertical Aerospace will have to issue equity to raise cash when it needs it, which means dilution of current shareholders' claims to its future earnings. The need to raise cash is why Wall Street projects Vertical's share count will rise from 157 million in 2026 to 373 million in 2032, when Vertical is expected to start generating earnings.
Of course, these share count estimates are subject to the share price, with a lower share price leading to more equity issued and vice versa.
A stock to buy?
This is a high-risk stock that will suit only fully committed and extremely patient eVTOL investors. The company does have 1,500 preorders for its Valo eVTOL, but just how much cash investment it will need and what kind of dilution will happen to shareholders along the way to executing on those orders are open to question.
