It also provides hosted payload and other data services, such as satellite time and location services; and inbound connections from the public switched telephone network, short message, subscriber identity module, activation, customer reactivation, and other peripheral services. In addition, the company offers voice and data solutions comprising personnel tracking devices; asset tracking devices for equipment, vehicles, and aircrafts; beyond-line-of-sight aircraft communications applications; maritime communications applications; specialized communications solutions for high-value individuals; mobile communications and data devices for the military and other government agencies, such as secure satellite handsets, as well as netted voice, messaging, and paging services; and maintenance services for the United States government's dedicated gateway. Further, it provides satellite handsets, voice and data modems, broadband data devices, and IoT data devices; various accessories for its devices that include batteries, holsters, earbud headphones, portable auxiliary antennas, antenna adaptors, USB data cables, charging units, and others; and engineering and support services. Iridium Communications Inc. sells its products and services to commercial end users through a wholesale distribution network that include service providers, and value-added resellers and manufacturers. The company was formerly known as Iridium Holdings LLC and changed its name to Iridium Communications Inc. in September 2009. Iridium Communications Inc. is headquartered in McLean, Virginia.

What this means for investors
AST shares have soared almost 250% over the last 12 months as investors anticipated the continued deployment of a large array of satellites to support the company’s ambitions to provide space-based broadband internet access. That’s why the failed attempt to launch its BlueBird 7 satellite in the correct orbit hit the stock hard today.
BlueBird 7 has now effectively been lost and will have to be deliberately destroyed in an atmospheric re-entry. While the failed positioning by a rocket from Jeff Bezos’ space technology company Blue Origin should be covered by insurance, it has delayed AST SpaceMobile’s plans and potentially soured investors on the stock, at least for the near term.

A big deal in space
Iridium's peer in question is Globalstar, which landed prominently in the financial headlines on Tuesday after it signed a deal to be acquired by the always-ambitious Amazon. The cash-and-stock transaction is valued at more than $11 billion.
The deal puts a valuable asset in Amazon's pocket, as the company will add Globalstar's direct-to-device services to Amazon Leo, its low Earth orbit satellite network.
Not surprisingly, Globalstar's stock and Iridium's both popped on the news. After all, the transaction heightened the value of the few existing satellite networks operated by publicly traded companies, and Iridium has operated its network for many years.
Knock-on effects
I predict that we'll see much more coverage of satellite companies, and hence potential interest from other would-be acquirers with bulging coffers. Satellite networks have been valuable in the telecom and defense industries for a long time, and that value is likely to grow if and when artificial intelligence (AI)-ready data centers are floated in space -- a hot idea in both the space and tech industries now.

Globalstar, Inc. GSAT is stepping into a transformative phase following its definitive agreement to be acquired by Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN, a move that positions the satellite communications provider at the center of the next wave of global connectivity. Long known for its mobile satellite services and early leadership in low Earth orbit (LEO) systems, Globalstar now stands to significantly expand its technological reach and commercial relevance through integration with Amazon’s ambitious Amazon Leo initiative.
The deal represents a powerful validation of its decades-long investment in spectrum assets, satellite infrastructure and direct-to-device (D2D) capabilities. Notably, shares of Globalstar have gained approximately 10% in the trading session yesterday. Its shares have gained 80.5% in the past six months compared with the Zacks Satellite and Communication industry's growth of 80%.

What Does This Acquisition Offer?
The addition of Globalstar’s infrastructure allows Amazon Leo to accelerate its roadmap toward D2D services, expected to roll out beginning in 2028. For Globalstar, this means its existing satellite fleet and next-generation assets will not only remain relevant but become integral to a much larger, unified network. This integration enhances utilization rates, extends asset lifecycles and unlocks new monetization avenues across consumer, enterprise and government segments. Instead of operating as a niche satellite provider, Globalstar is effectively being scaled into a global connectivity backbone.
The transaction shifts Globalstar from a capital-constrained operator to part of a well-funded ecosystem backed by Amazon’s scale, engineering depth and cloud infrastructure. This dramatically reduces execution risk associated with satellite launches, network expansion and technology upgrades. It also positions GSAT to benefit from Amazon’s broader partnerships with mobile network operators, enabling hybrid connectivity solutions that extend coverage to remote and underserved regions worldwide.
The acquisition strengthens Globalstar’s competitive positioning against other satellite players pursuing direct-to-device connectivity. With Amazon’s backing, GSAT gains the ability to compete not just on technology, but on scale, integration and service reliability. This is especially important as satellite connectivity becomes a critical layer in global telecom infrastructure, supporting everything from disaster response to IoT and remote enterprise operations.
Globalstar, Inc. Price and Consensus
The deal offers Globalstar shareholders a structured exit with upside participation through Amazon equity, while also reflecting the strategic premium attached to its assets. More importantly, it underscores the growing value of spectrum ownership and LEO capabilities in an increasingly connected world.
GSAT operates a LEO satellite constellation providing mobile satellite services (MSS) and voice/data communications to retail, enterprise and government customers. Its terrestrial assets include Band 53 spectrum, the 5G n53 variant and XCOM RAN. Recently, Globalstar introduced XCOM RAN, a next-generation private 5G solution designed to accelerate the adoption of “physical AI” across industries. The company is preparing to launch replacement and next-generation satellites, expand network infrastructure, roll out two-way IoT services and grow its XCOM RAN business, positioning 2026 as a growth phase.
For 2026, the company expects total revenues to be in the range of $280-$305 million, along with an adjusted EBITDA margin of approximately 50%.
However, Globalstar faces stiff competition from other companies such as AST SpaceMobile, Inc. ASTS and Iridium Communications Inc. IRDM. AST SpaceMobile has strategically partnered with leading telecom companies to grant customers easy access to their technology. The acquisition of Ligado Networks has enabled it to gain the spectrum rights to a 45MHz block of Ligado’s L-band spectrum in the United States and Canadian markets for more than 80 years. With the successful completion of the transaction, ASTS will be able to offer its cellular satellite services independently, reducing its reliance on carrier partners.
IRDM benefits from strong growth prospects in the satellite communications space, supported by its enhanced mesh architecture, strategic government relationships and a solid subscriber base, positioning it to generate higher revenues. In 2026, Iridium plans to roll out new offerings with $200 million in revenue potential by 2030.

Buyout rumors are swirling
Several space stocks jumped on Thursday on reports that Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) was in talks to buy Globalstar (NASDAQ: GSAT).
Amazon is reportedly looking to accelerate its plans to offer satellite-based internet services. Acquiring Globalstar's satellite constellation and mobile communications network -- or one of its competitors -- could help it do so.
A mega IPO could be on the horizon
The space industry also received a boost from reports that SpaceX had quietly filed for an IPO. The Elon Musk-led aerospace manufacturer and space transportation leader could be seeking a staggering $1.75 trillion market valuation, according to Bloomberg.
SpaceX's IPO, which would no doubt bring further attention to the massive growth potential of the space market, could take place as early as June.
These space stocks could benefit
Planet Labs supplies satellite imagery and other geospatial solutions to a growing list of customers, including the U.S. Department of Defense and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Iridium provides mobile satellite communications services to businesses and government agencies. It specializes in delivering positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services to pilots, sailors, and first responders.
Intuitive Machines is a leader in space exploration and infrastructure development. It recently received a $180 million contract from NASA to deliver payloads to the Moon's surface. Intuitive Machines' technology is also supporting the Artemis II mission currently underway.

Why Planet Labs, Iridium Communications, Intuitive Machines, and Other Space Stocks Skyrocketed This Week

The would-be buyer is a top name in online retail.
Satellite stocks were hot among investors on Thursday, and one beneficiary of this was telecom services specialist Iridium Communications (NASDAQ: IRDM). Following a widely read media report about a peer company potentially being acquired, Iridium's share price zoomed more than 15% higher. That crushed the essentially flat performance of the S&P 500 index.
Star turn
Before market open, the Financial Times published an article stating that Globalstar was in discussions with Amazon about a potential acquisition. Such a deal would bolster Amazon's current satellite internet effort, called Leo (not coincidentally, the acronym for low Earth orbit, the region of Earth's orbit most crowded with satellites).

Citing unnamed "people familiar with the matter," the FT wrote that the two companies have been discussing a deal for some time. There were no indications of how much this might be worth.
One complicating factor, according to the FT's sources, is Apple, which holds a 20% stake in Globalstar. The newspaper said that Apple and Amazon were also holding talks.
Amazon is likely not Globalstar's only suitor. Late last year, it reportedly discussed a possible acquisition with the Elon Musk-led SpaceX. At the time, according to Bloomberg, this was among discussions with other companies that had some interest in buying the company.
None of the mentioned companies has officially commented on the FT article.
AI in the void
The clear interest in Globalstar from deep-pocketed strategic investors highlights the value of satellite networks. These are rightly considered the "next frontier" not only in the telecom and defense industries, but also in the white-hot tech segment of artificial intelligence (AI). A popular topic in the tech world is the possibility of building AI-capable data centers in space.
That said, the sudden surge of investor interest in satellite stocks in the wake of the report feels like a frenzy. While companies like Iridium have their own merits, it's always risky to trade on secondary takeover speculation. I'd leave Iridium and its peers alone in the coming days as that frenzy cools down.

Why Iridium Stock Trounced the Market on Thursday

Iridium Communications IRDM reported earnings per share (EPS) of 24 cents for the fourth quarter of 2025, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 4.4%. The bottom line, however, compared unfavorably with the prior year quarter's figure of 32 cents.
Iridium reported quarterly total revenue of $212.9 million, flat year over year, missing the consensus estimate by 3%. Service revenue growth largely offset declines in subscriber equipment revenue. This mix shift continues to enhance visibility and margin stability, as service revenue is primarily recurring and subscription-driven. For the full year, revenue grew 5% to $871.7 million, fueled by rising IoT demand and deeper integration into mission-critical applications.
Total Service revenues rose 3% year over year to $158.9 million. The growth in recurring revenues, led by higher subscriber engagement, drove the performance. Service revenues contributed 75% to total revenues in the fourth quarter. Our estimate for the metric was $157.8 million.
Commercial service revenue grew 3% year over year to $131.2 million, accounting for 62% of total revenue in the quarter. Growth was driven by a 4% increase in voice and data revenue, supported by summer price hikes, and an 11% rise in commercial IoT revenue. In 2025, Iridium added new partners and certified more than 30 IoT products. These new relationships and applications are expected to expand its sales pipeline and extend its satellite technology to more industries and customers in the coming years. This segment remains the structural growth pillar of the business.
Iridium Communications Inc Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Hosted payload and other data services revenue fell 13% year over year to $13.4 million in the quarter, mainly due to a delay in a PNT deployment by an existing customer. Excluding this delay, demand for Iridium’s assured PNT services remains strong, and the company continues to target $100 million in annual service revenue from this business by the end of the decade. Government service revenue rose 3% to $27.6 million, driven by a contractual rate increase under the Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services (EMSS) contract with the U.S. Space Force. Our estimate for total commercial service and government service revenues was pegged at $137.5 million and $26.3 million, respectively.
Subscriber Equipment sales declined 21% to $17 million. Although down year over year, it aligns with Iridium’s outlook for normalized annual equipment sales of $80–$90 million. We projected the figure to be $18.6 million.
Engineering and support revenue inched down 1% year over year at $37.1 million. Engineering revenue rose sharply in 2025 and is expected to grow again in 2026, providing diversification beyond pure subscription revenue.
Following the announcements, IRDM’s shares jumped 21.3% in trading and closed the session at $22.39 on Feb. 12. In the past year, shares have declined 30% against the Zacks Satellite and Communication industry's growth of 168%.

Other Details
Total operating expenses were $157.7 million compared with $160.9 in the prior-year quarter, primarily due to lower research and development costs.
Operational EBITDA (OEBITDA) of $115.3 million was down 2% year over year. OEBITDA fell by a $3 million inventory charge recorded in the fourth quarter.
Operating income came in at $55.3 million compared with $52.1 million in the year-ago quarter.
Iridium ended the fourth quarter with 2,537,000 total billable subscribers, up 3% from 2,460,000 at the prior-year quarter end. The year-over-year rise was backed by strength in commercial IoT. Commercial IoT now represents 83% of commercial subscribers, reinforcing Iridium’s strategy of serving industrial, maritime, aviation, oil & gas, mining and asset-tracking markets.
Liquidity
As of Dec. 31, 2025, total cash and cash equivalents were $96.5 million, with $1.7 billion of net debt. Capital expenditures were $33.5 million in the quarter under review.
Due to the suspension of its share repurchase program as announced on the third-quarterearnings call Iridium did not buy back any shares in the fourth quarter. In 2025, Iridium bought back about 6.8 million shares for a total of roughly $185 million. As of Dec. 31, 2025, $245.3 million remained available under the current authorization, which runs through 2027.
2026 Guidance Signals Discipline
For 2026, service revenue is expected to be flat to up 2%, reflecting continued IoT growth offset by moderation elsewhere, following 2025 service revenue of $634 million.
Iridium expects 2026 OEBITDA of $480–$490 million compared with $495.3 million reported in 2025. The guidance includes a roughly $17 million hit from paying incentive compensation fully in cash rather than a mix of cash and equity. Excluding this accounting change, 2026 OEBITDA would have been $497–$507 million, indicating no underlying operational deterioration.

The earnings figure, however, missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 43 cents. BCE Inc. BCE reported fourth-quarter 2025 adjusted EPS of C$0.69 (49 cents), down from C$0.79 in the prior-year quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at 45 cents. Quarterly total operating revenues dipped 0.3% year over year to C$6.4 billion ($4.6 billion). The consensus estimate was pegged at $4.7 billion. The decline is attributed to a 15% fall in Product revenues, which totaled C$965 million, amid 2.9% growth in Service revenues, which came in at C$5.4 billion.
