Should You Buy Intel Stock After Nvidia Investment, Government, and SoftBank Investment?

Intel has improved its balance sheet with multiple deals, and the stock has more than doubled.
IBM's AI and quantum computing strategies look promising.
While the broader stock market is looking pricey, Intel and IBM are solid buys.
With the major U.S. stock indexes carving out new all-time highs despite a highly uncertain macroeconomic environment, investors need to be careful. There's plenty of frothiness, and the return of meme stock rallies could be a sign that the current bull market is under threat.
While there are many stocks that I'm not interested in buying right now, there are a few that stand out as excellent buys. Here's why Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) are my two favorite stocks right now.

Intel
Intel stock has more than doubled from its 52-week low following a string of developments over the past few months. The company has greatly improved its balance sheet by striking multiple deals, and its financial results appear to be stabilizing under CEO Lip-Bu Tan.
In August, Intel gave the U.S. government a nearly 10% stake in exchange for grant money that had yet to be delivered. It was an unusual deal, but it improved Intel's balance sheet and gave the federal government a direct stake in the only U.S.-based advanced logic semiconductor manufacturer.
Intel reached two other notable agreements recently: a $2 billion equity investment from Softbank and a $5 billion equity investment from Nvidia. The latter deal also involved custom chip design work that will integrate Intel's x86 CPU technology with Nvidia technology for both PC and server CPUs.
These deals have bolstered Intel's balance sheet, removing some financial pressure as the company attempts to turn its expensive foundry bet into a long-term success. While Intel's comeback is still in its early innings, the company's third-quarter results were better than expected. Revenue edged up, adjusted EPS jumped back into positive territory, and the company noted that demand was outpacing supply.
It's going to take years for Intel to fully right itself. A strong product roadmap, including Panther Lake and Nova Lake for PCs, and Clearwater Forest and Diamond Rapids for servers, can help the company win back market share in 2026 and 2027. However, securing major external customers for the foundry and improving yields for the Intel 18A process, which will be used by Intel for many of its own upcoming products, are necessary requirements for a return to sustainable revenue and earnings growth.
While Intel's turnaround is a work in progress, the sentiment around the stock has certainly shifted in a positive direction. With shares of Intel still well below the multiyear high, the semiconductor giant is worth betting on even after staging a huge rally.
International Business Machines
IBM isn't a flashy company. The tech giant serves enterprise clients with consulting services, software, and hardware, providing solutions that marry its own products with third-party offerings through various strategic partnerships. The company's client base is enormous, with some relationships spanning decades.
Unlike other tech behemoths, IBM is not pouring capital into massive artificial intelligence data centers or training expensive frontier AI models. Instead, the company is focused on small, efficient, and purpose-built models that are deployed to solve client problems. IBM has booked $9.5 billion worth of AI-related business so far, with around 80% of that total coming from consulting and the rest coming from software. AI implementation and related services are areas where IBM shines.
IBM expects its revenue to grow by more than 5% adjusted for currency this year despite ongoing sluggishness in demand for discretionary tech projects. Free cash flow should be around $14 billion, up from $12.7 billion last year. AI is part of the reason for this growth, in addition to a new mainframe system that puts AI at the center.
Looking further ahead, IBM is a leader in the quantum computing market. The company has a well-defined roadmap and is pursuing a strategy of pairing quantum computers with classical techniques. Recently, HSBC used an IBM quantum computer to accelerate a computation involved in bond trading. Around 2033, IBM expects full-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers to be a reality.
The stock market has finally started to appreciate IBM over the past couple of years, sending the stock up more than 100% since late 2023. As the company's enterprise AI strategy continues to pay off, and as its quantum computing efforts march toward commercial viability, it's not too late for investors to bet on IBM.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday rose by +1.22%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) rose by +0.69%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) rose by +1.82%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) rose by +1.21%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) rose by +1.83%.
US stocks rallied sharply on Monday after US and Chinese negotiators, who met over the weekend in Malaysia, said they reached a tentative trade agreement to be finalized at Thursday's summit between Presidents Trump and Xi on the sidelines of the ASEAN conference in Malaysia. Treasury Secretary Bessent said the agreement means the US threat of a 100% tariff on US imports from China, set to start November 1, is "effectively off the table." Meanwhile, China agreed not to restrict the export of rare earth metals for at least one year and to buy a "substantial" amount of US soybeans. The two sides also made progress on shipping fees and US demands that China crack down on the export to the US of fentanyl and precursors. The two sides may also reach an agreement that would allow US consumers to continue to access TikTok.

Treasury Secretary Bessent said Monday that the pool of candidates for the next Fed Chair has been narrowed to Christopher Waller, Kevin Warsh, Kevin Hassett, Michelle Bowman, and Rick Rieder. President Trump is expected to announce a decision on a new Fed Chair by year-end to replace current Fed Chair Powell, whose term as the Fed Chairman ends on May 15, 2026. Mr. Powell's separate term as a Fed Governor runs until January 2028, though he faces pressure from Mr. Trump to step down as a Fed Governor as well, so Mr. Trump can appoint a more dovish Fed governor.
This is a busy week, with the FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, when it is expected to cut its federal funds rate target by -25 bp. Also, five of the Magnificent Seven companies report earnings this week, with Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft reporting on Wednesday, and Apple and Amazon.com reporting on Thursday.
There was some carry-over support from last Friday's Sep US CPI report of +3.0% y/y for both the nominal and core figures, which was slightly weaker than expectations of +3.1% y/y for both figures.
Trade relations with Canada were a negative factor for stocks on Monday after President Trump said on Saturday that he would impose a new 10% tariff on US imports from Canada as punishment for last week's anti-tariff advertisement released by the provincial government of Ontario. Mr. Trump initially said that he was only halting US trade negotiations with Canada due to the ad, but he escalated the punishment over the weekend by imposing a new 10% tariff, even though Ontario had agreed to pause the ad campaign.
Ontario's ad featured former US President Reagan speaking out in a 1987 address in favor of free trade and against tariffs, calling tariffs an outdated idea that stifles innovation, drives up prices, and hurts US workers. Mr. Trump claimed the ad was deceptive and said it was designed to influence the US Supreme Court ahead of oral arguments on November 5 on the legality of Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs. Lower courts have already deemed Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs illegal, ruling the tariffs are based on a specious claim of emergency authority. If the US Supreme Court upholds those rulings, the US government will have to refund the tariffs already collected, and Mr. Trump's power to impose tariffs will be limited to well-founded sections of US trade law.
The US government shutdown continues into its fifth week, weighing on market sentiment and the US economy. The government shutdown is delaying the release of government reports, including all the recent weekly unemployment claims reports, the September unemployment and payroll report, Aug trade balance, Sep retail sales, Sep PPI, Sep housing starts, Sep industrial production, Sep leading indicators, and others. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets are focused on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season continues. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 84% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from +6.4% in Q2.
Overseas stock markets on Monday closed higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.64%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.18%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +2.46%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Monday rose slightly by +0.5 tick. The 10-year T-note yield fell -1.2 bp to 3.989%. T-note prices initially fell on Monday due to the US-Chinese trade agreement, which reduced safe-haven demand for Treasury securities and was positive for the US and Chinese economies. T-note prices were also pressured by the rally in US stocks.
However, T-note prices recovered later in the day as the 10-year inflation expectations rate fell by -1.1 bp to 2.288%. T-notes have support from the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
The markets are discounting a 98% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at this week's FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct 28-29).
European government bond yields closed lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell -1.0 bp to 2.616%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell 3.0 bp at 4.402%.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks all closed higher on Monday, led by a +4.3% gain in Tesla (TSLA), a +3.6% gain in Alphabet (GOOG), and gains of more than +2% in Nvidia (NVDA) and Apple (AAPL).
Chip stocks traded higher across the board Monday, led by a +11% gain in Qualcomm (QCOM) on news of a new AI chip and computer line to compete with Nvidia. Marvell Technology (MRVL) rose more than +5%, and Arm Holdings (ARM) rose more than +4%. ON Semiconductors (ON), Lam Research (LRCX), and Intel (INTC) all rose by more than +3%.
Crypto stocks traded higher, with support from Monday's gains of more than +3% in Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) and +5% in Ethereum (^ETHUSD). Riot Platforms (RIOT) rallied more than +7%, Strategy (MSTR) rallied +2.3%, and Coinbase (COIN) rallied +2.0%.
Avidity Biosciences (RNA) rallied +42% after news that Swiss-based Novartis plans to buy the company in a deal worth $12 billion. Novartis ADR shares (NVS) fell -0.9%.
Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) agreed to buy Cadence Bank (CADE) for $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal to expand into the Southeast and South. Huntington fell -1.8%, while Cadence rallied +4.4%.
American Water Works (AWK) fell -2.5%, and Essential Utilities (WTRG) fell -1.4%, after news that the two companies finalized AWK's purchase of Essential Utilities for $12 billion in an all-stock deal.
Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) rallied more than +7% after raising its full-year net sales guidance.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) rallied about +2% on news of an agreement with the National Football League and sports merchandiser Fanatics Inc to develop a line of fan apparel.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) rose more than +4% after CICC gave the brokerage a new rating of outperform.
Newmont (NEM) fell more than -5% as the company seeks to gain control of Barrick's gold mines in Nevada.
Boeing (BA) rose +0.8% even though factory workers in St Louis narrowly rejected a new 5-year contract that would have ended a 3-month strike that has disrupted the company's main military manufacturing operations.

T-note prices are also being pressured by the rally in US stocks and today’s +0.7 bp rise in the 10-year breakeven inflation expectations rate.
T-notes have support from the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
The markets are discounting a 97% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at this week’s FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct 28-29).
European government bond yields are steady to lower. The 10-year German bund yield is unchanged at 2.626%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -2.0 bp at 4.411%.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks are all trading higher today, led by gains of more than +2% in Nvidia (NVDA), Alphabet (GOOG), Tesla (TSLA), and Meta Platforms (META).
Chip stocks are trading higher across the board today, led by gains of more than +3% in Intel (INTC) and Lam Research (LRCX).
Crypto stocks are trading higher today, with support from today’s gains of more than +3% in Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) and +5% in Ethereum (^ETHUSD). Strategy (MSTR), MARA Holdings (MARA), and Riot Platforms (RIOT) are up more than +2%. Coinbase (COIN) is up more than +1%.
Avidity Biosciences (RNA) is up +42% after news that Swiss-based Novartis plans to buy the company in a deal worth $12 billion. Novartis ADR shares (NVS) down -2%.
Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) agreed to buy Cadence Bank (CADE) for $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal to expand into the Southeast and South. Huntington is down -2% while Cadence is up more than +4%.
Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) is up more than +4% after raising its full-year net sales guidance.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) is up more than +2% on news of an agreement with the National Football League and sports merchandiser Fanatics Inc to develop a line of fan apparel.
Robinhood (HOOD) is up more than 5% after CICC gave the brokerage a new rating of outperform.
Newmont (NEM) is down -4% as the company seeks to gain control of Barrick’s gold mines in Nevada.
Boeing (BA) is trading slightly higher even though factory workers in St Louis narrowly rejected a new 5-year contract that would have ended a 3-month strike that has disrupted the company’s main military manufacturing operations.

Shares of Lam Research Break Out to New Highs
Shares of Lam Research are red hot. They have hit a new all-time high in 2025, gaining another 18.2% in the last month. Year to date they’re up 109.4%.
Lam Research is not cheap, but you’re paying for the growth. It has a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 32.4. A P/E over 20 is considered expensive.

Helen of Troy Beat in the Fiscal Second Quarter of 2026
On Oct 9, 2025, Helen of Troy reported its fiscal second quarter 2026 results and beat on the Zacks Consensus Estimate by $0.05. It reported $0.59 versus the consensus of $0.54.
It was the first beat after missing the prior two quarters.
Net sales fell 8.9% to $431.8 million from $474.2 million a year ago. Both of its business segments declined.
Beauty & Wellness fell due to lower sales of thermometers, heaters, and hair appliances. Home & Outdoor saw a decrease in the insulated beverageware and home categories.
Gross profit also declined year-over-year to 44.2% from 45.6% due to a 200-basis point hit from the tariffs and some promotional expenses.
Analysts Are Bearish on Helen of Troy for This Year and Next
In its fiscal Q1 2026 earnings report, Helen of Troy only provided second quarter guidance, and not full year. But on Oct 9, 2025, it finally gave full year guidance. However, it was below the Zacks Consensus.
As a result, 2 estimates were cut for both fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027 in the last month. For fiscal 2026, the cuts pushed the Zacks Consensus down to $4.29 from $4.62.
That’s a decline of 40.2% from fiscal 2025. But earnings were also down 19.5% in fiscal 2025.
The fiscal 2027 Zacks Consensus Estimate fell to $4.33 from $4.98. This is earnings growth of 0.9%.
Shares of Helen of Troy Fall to 5-Year Lows
Shares of Helen of Troy still haven’t found a bottom. It’s down 90.2% over the last 5 years but is still down 65.9% year-to-date.
It’s dirt cheap on a price-to-earnings (P/E) basis. It has a P/E of 4.75. A P/E under 10 is considered dirt cheap. But sometimes a P/E can be too low and it indicates a trap.
Helen of Troy is not paying a dividend at this time. It has also put in a slew of things to turn the business around including suspension of projects and capital expenditures that are not critical.
It had paused most project and travel expenses in Q1 and that remains in place.
While it is working on mitigating some of the tariffs, it has resumed a targeted purchases of inventory from China in the short term. However, it’s expecting softer consumer demand in the short to intermediate term.
Given all the uncertainty, investors might want to wait on the sidelines for improvement in sales and earnings.

Intel’s Q3 Earnings Are Out – The Company Reports a Profit
Intel announced third-quarter revenues of $13.7 billion, up 3% year over year, according to the company’s press release. This reflects a notable boost in demand for Intel’s Core x86 processors for personal computers (PCs).
Intel’s products group division brought in $12.7 billion in revenue for the third quarter, a 3% increase from the same period last year. Within this division, the Client Computing Group, which includes PCs and laptops, earned $8.5 billion, up 5% from the previous year.
Intel’s net income totaled $4.1 billion, or 90 cents a share, for the three months ended in September, reversing a net loss of $16.6 billion, or $3.88 a share, in the year-ago quarter. CEO Lip-Bu Tan’s initiatives to cut headcounts and halt certain projects proved effective, improving Intel’s profit margins.
NVIDIA Deal to Boost Intel’s Data Center and AI Growth
In the third quarter, the Data Center and AI division, part of the products group, generated $4.1 billion in revenue, a 1% decrease year over year. However, Intel expects its recent deal with NVIDIA Corp. to jump-start growth in its data center central processors (CPU) business.
Both Intel and NVIDIA are collaborating to develop next-generation data center and PC products for hyperscalers and the broader consumer market. The partnership will integrate Intel’s x86 ecosystem with NVIDIA’s artificial intelligence (AI) and accelerated computing platforms via NVIDIA NVLink, as noted in the press release.
Intel’s Foundry Business to Benefit From Microsoft Tie-Up
In the third quarter, Intel’s foundry business produced $4.2 billion in revenue, a 2% decline from the previous year. Looking ahead, Microsoft Corp. is expected to leverage Intel’s foundry to develop its own advanced AI chips, which could significantly expand this division.
Microsoft may decide to use Intel’s 18A or 18A-P process for its next in-house AI chip. Nevertheless, Intel has already strengthened its partnership with Microsoft through Windows ML collaboration and Intel vPro integration with Microsoft Intune, as mentioned in the press release.

Intel’s strong third-quarter performance and its partnerships with NVIDIA and Microsoft to strengthen its data center and foundry business provide compelling reasons for stakeholders to remain invested in the stock.
Confidence is further bolstered by Softbank and the Trump administration’s $2 billion and $8.9 billion investment, respectively, in Intel, aimed at strengthening the company’s efforts to develop a resilient semiconductor supply chain in the United States.

Lam Research and Helen of Troy have been highlighted as Zacks Bull and Bear of the Day

Intel's (NASDAQ: INTC) comeback continued on Thursday as the legacy chip company posted better-than-expected results in its third quarter.
Revenue growth was weak again, up just 3% to $13.7 billion, but was still well ahead of the consensus at $13.14 billion, showing how low expectations have sunk the stock.

However, the real star of the earnings report was the dramatic improvement in the company's profitability. Adjusted gross margin jumped 22 percentage points to 40%, benefiting from a more favorable product mix, lower inventory reserves, and higher revenue. Higher operating margin rose 29 percentage points to 11.2% as Intel lowered research and development and general and administrative expenses from $4.8 billion to $3.9 billion. On the bottom line, adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.23 from a per-share loss of $0.46 in the quarter a year ago.
CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took over the company in March, has been focused on shoring up the balance sheet. Intel has sold stakes in the company to the federal government, Nvidia, and Softbank, and it sold stakes in Mobility and Altera to raise cash as well. Altogether, it raised $12.9 billion from those moves, and it expects Nvidia's $5 billion investment to close in the fourth quarter. It also repaid $4.3 billion in debt. Since the start of the year, the company has added $20 billion in net assets, showing that those efforts have paid off.
What's next for Intel?
Intel is now a significantly different company than it was a year ago. Its new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, was previously on the board of directors but left in frustration with the company's slow pace of change.
Now Tan is calling the shots. The company has slimmed down, selling off a majority stake in Altera and a minority stake in Mobileye. It also announced plans to cut 25,000 jobs in July, the latest in several rounds of layoffs, and it has refreshed its management ranks to "reestablish an engineering-first mindset."
Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, the company expects revenue of $12.8 billion to $13.8 billion, a 3% sequential decline from the third quarter and a 6.3% year-over-year decline.
That shows that despite the company's efforts to streamline the business, it's still struggling to grow at a time when peers like Nvidia, AMD, and Arm are delivering strong growth and benefiting from the AI boom.
On the bottom line, it expects a gross margin of 36.5% and adjusted earnings per share of $0.08, down from $0.13 in the quarter a year ago and well below the $0.23 it reported in the third quarter.
While much of its efforts have been on the Intel products division, the improvement on the bottom line came primarily from lowering costs in its foundry division and narrowing its operating loss from $5.8 billion to $2.3 billion in that division, even as revenue was down slightly.
Is Intel a buy?
After plunging back to 2003 levels as it got left behind in the AI race, Intel stock has doubled in less than three months and is now trading around where it was in early 2024 when hopes about AI lifted the stock.
Intel's market cap is now hovering around $200 billion, and the implied expectations are suddenly much higher. Based on next year's adjusted earnings per share consensus of $0.61, the stock now trades at a forward P/E of more than 60.
Of course, there's room for Intel to improve its business and top that number, but the argument that the stock is oversold and too cheap no longer applies.
At this point, investors should want to see clear signs that the company can return to revenue growth before bidding the stock higher.

The U.S. does not have a dependable supply chain for these minerals, which are largely mined and processed in China. And China has banned or restricted the export of some of these minerals to the U.S. So, the U.S. government is spending some big bucks to develop a more dependable critical minerals supply chain.
The Trump administration has even bought a stake in several publicly traded U.S. companies it considers essential to the nation's national security. This includes three critical minerals companies -- Lithium Americas, Trilogy Metals, and rare-earth elements company MP Materials (NYSE: MP) -- along with semiconductor maker Intel.
