The company offers medical and supplemental benefit plans to individuals. It has a contract with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to administer the Limited Income Newly Eligible Transition prescription drug plan program; and contracts with various states to provide Medicaid, dual eligible, and long-term support services benefits. In addition, the company provides commercial fully-insured medical and specialty health insurance benefits comprising dental, vision, life insurance, and other supplemental health benefits, as well as administrative services only products to individuals and employer groups; military services, such as TRICARE T2017 East Region contract; and engages in the operations of pharmacy benefit manager business. Further, it operates pharmacies and senior focused primary care centers; and offers home solutions services, such as home health, hospice, and other services to its health plan members, as well as to third parties. The company sells its products through employers and employees, independent brokers and agents, sales representatives, and digital insurance agencies. The company was formerly known as Extendicare Inc. and changed its name to Humana Inc. in April 1974. Humana Inc. was founded in 1961 and is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.

Can Centene's Q3 Earnings Escape Industry's Cost Headwinds?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.32%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.18%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.33%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) are up +0.35%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) are up +0.35%.
Stock indexes are moving higher today, led by strength in energy producers after WTI crude oil jumped more than +5% when the US blacklisted state-run Rosneft PJSC and Lukoil PJSC, Russia's largest oil producers, which threatens to tighten global oil supplies. Also, Dow Inc. is up more than +11% after reporting stronger-than-expected Q3 adjusted operating Ebitda. In addition, Honeywell International is up more than +5% after reporting better-than-expected Q3 sales.

On the negative side, Molina Healthcare is down more than -20% to lead health insurers lower after cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast. Also, International Business Machines is down more than -4% after reporting a smaller-than-expected increase in its Q3 hybrid cloud unit. In addition, Tesla is down more than -3% after reporting Q3 EPS below consensus.
Late Wednesday, the Trump administration announced sanctions on Rosneft PJSC and Lukoil PJSC, Russia's biggest oil producers, due to "Russia's lack of serious commitment to a peace process to end the war in Ukraine." The new sanctions could bar foreign countries or companies from conducting business with the oil companies and cut them off from much of the international financial system.
The markets are focusing on progress in US-China trade talks, as President Trump reiterated his threat on Monday to boost tariffs on Chinese goods "if there isn't a deal" by November 1. President Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in South Korea.
The shutdown of the US government continues into its fourth week, weighing on market sentiment and delaying key economic reports. The government shutdown means delays in the release of government reports, including the last four weeks of weekly initial unemployment claims and the September payroll report. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said the September consumer price report, which was initially scheduled to be released last Wednesday, will be released this Friday. The White House has warned that if the government shutdown lingers, it would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don't align with President Trump's priorities. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets this week will focus on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season continues. Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 85% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. Also, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 that have provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results are expected to beat analysts' expectations, the highest in a year. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from 6.4% in Q2.
The markets are pricing in a 99% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.17%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.22%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.35%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) today are down -8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +3.4 bp to 3.984%. T-notes are under pressure today due to inflation concerns, as a +5% surge in WTI crude oil prices has boosted inflation expectations and pushed the 10-year breakeven inflation rate up to a 1-week high of 2.309%. Also, supply pressures are negative for T-notes as the Treasury will auction $26 billion of 5-year TIPS later today.
T-notes have ongoing support due to the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +1.6 bp to 2.579%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +0.8 bp to 4.425%.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Energy stocks and energy service providers are climbing today, with the price of WTI crude oil up more than +5% at a 2-week high. APA Corp (APA) is up more than +6% and Valero Energy (VLO) is up more than +5%. Also, Diamondback Energy (FANG) and Devon Energy (DVN) are up more than +4%, and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and ConocoPhillips (COP) are up more than +3%. In addition, Halliburton (HAL), Phillips 66 (PSX), and Baker Hughes (BKR) are up more than +2%.
Quantum-computing stocks are rallying today after the Wall Street Journal reported that the firms are in talks to give the Commerce Department equity stakes in exchange for federal funding. As a result, IonQ (IONQ), Rigetti Computing (RGTI), D-Wave Quantum (QBTS), and Quantum Computing (QUBT) are up more than +6%.
Molina Healthcare (MOH) is down more than -20% to lead health insurers lower and losers in the S&P 500 after cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $14.00 from a previous estimate of $19.00, well below the consensus of $18.65. Also, Centene (CNC) and Oscar Health (OSCR) are down more than -7%. In addition, Humana (HUM) is down -2%, and Elevance Health (ELV), United Health Services (UHS), and UnitedHealth Group (UNH) are down more than -1%.
West Pharmaceutical Services (WST) is up more than +12% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after raising its full-year adjusted EPS estimate to $7.06-$7.11 from a previous forecast of $6.65-$6.85.
Dow Inc. (DOW) is up more than +11% after reporting Q3 adjusted operating Ebitda of $868 million, well above the consensus of $759.7 million.
Las Vegas Sands (LVS) is up more than +9% after reporting Q3 net revenue of $3.33 billion, above he consensus of $3.04 billion.
Honeywell International (HON) is up more than +5% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q3 sales of $10.41 billion, stronger than the consensus of $10.15 billion.
TransUnion (TRU) is up more than +3% after reporting Q3 adjusted EPS of $1.10, better than the consensus of $1.05.
CME Group (CME) is up more than +1% after Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $300.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed down -0.16%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.44%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.69%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) fell -0.20%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) fell -0.75%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average recovering from a one-month low. Stocks were pressured on Tuesday as the US-China trade conflict escalated further after China sanctioned five US units of South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean Co., in the latest in a series of tit-for-tat moves. Both countries have slapped special port fees on each other’s vessels. The moves have implications for the global economy, as vessels are responsible for moving more than 80% of international trade. Additionally, President Trump stated that he may halt trade in cooking oil from China as a retaliatory measure against China’s refusal to purchase US soybeans.

Stock indexes recovered from their worst levels on Tuesday as bond yields declined on dovish comments from Fed Chair Powell, which reinforced expectations that the Fed will cut interest rates at the October 28-29 FOMC meeting. Fed Chair Powell said labor market perceptions remain on a downward trajectory and that the Fed may stop shrinking its balance sheet and end quantitative tightening in the coming months. The 10-year T-note yield fell -2 bp to 4.02%.
Stocks also garnered support on Tuesday on AI optimism after Walmart rose more than 4% after it announced a partnership with OpenAI to enable shoppers to browse and purchase products on ChatGPT.
The escalation of trade tensions has sparked buying of precious metals as a haven, as gold and silver rallied to new record highs on Tuesday. Also, global bond markets are the recipients of haven demand from the trade turmoil as bond yields declined worldwide. The 10-year German bund yield dropped to a 3.25-month low of 2.58% and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 3.5-week low of 4.00%.
Tuesday’s minor economic news showed that the US Sep NFIB small business optimism index fell -2.0 to 98.8, weaker than expectations of 100.6.
Most stock indexes rallied to record highs last week on optimism that growth in the AI sector and spending on artificial intelligence will translate into corporate profits. Stocks are also underpinned by hopes that a resilient US economy and additional Fed easing will continue to support the economy.
The shutdown of the US government continues, weighing on market sentiment and delaying key economic reports. The government shutdown means delays in the release of government reports, including the last two weeks of weekly initial unemployment claims, the Aug US trade report, and the Sep nonfarm payrolls report. Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said that it will release the September consumer price report on October 24 if the government shutdown continues into Wednesday, when the Sep CPI report is scheduled for release. The White House has warned that if the government shutdown lingered, it would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don’t align with President Trump’s priorities. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets this week will focus on Q3 earnings results as the Q3 earnings season begins. Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results that are expected to beat analysts’ expectations, the highest in a year. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2%, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% from 6.4% in Q2.
The markets are pricing in a 98% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2-week low and closed down -0.29%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed down -0.62%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 dropped to a 1-week low and closed down sharply by -2.58%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Tuesday closed up +8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -1.5 bp to 4.017%. Dec -T-notes rallied to a 3.5-week high on Tuesday, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 3.5-week low of 3.998%. The escalation of the US-China trade conflict sparked safe-haven buying of government debt securities. Also, falling inflation expectations are supportive for T-notes after the 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 3.25-month low on Tuesday at 2.299%. T-notes also have support amid concerns about the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
European government bond yields moved lower on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield dropped to a 3.25-month low of 2.583% and finished down -2.6 bp at 2.610%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell to a 2-month low of 4.570% and finished down -6.8 bp to 4.590%.
The German Oct ZEW expectations of economic growth survey rose +2.0 to 39.3, weaker than expectations of 41.1.
ECB President Lagarde said the Eurozone economy is “in a good place” as risks to the economic outlook are more balanced and the Eurozone economy has been relatively resilient to tariffs.
UK Aug employment rose by +91,000 in the 3-months ending August, which was weaker than expectations of +125,000. The ILO unemployment rate rose +0.1 to a 4.25-year high of 4.8% in the 3-months ending August, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of no change at 4.7%.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks retreated on Tuesday, weighing on the overall market. Arista Networks (ANET) closed down more than -5% to lead losers in the S&P 500, and Intel (INTC) closed down more than -4%. Also, Broadcom (AVGO), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Dell Technologies (DELL), Super Micro Computer (SMCI), and Micron Technology (MU) closed down more than -3%. In addition, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -2%, and ON Semiconductor (ON) closed down more than-1%.
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks were mostly lower on Tuesday, a negative factor for the broader market. Nvidia (NVDA) closed down more than -4%, and Tesla (TSLA), Amazon.com (AMZN), and Meta Platforms (META) closed down more than -1%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) closed down -0.09%.
Humana (HUM) closed down more than -3% after it lost a lawsuit against the US government that sought to undo cuts to the 2026 bonus payments it receives from the Medicare Advantage program.
Salesforce (CRM) closed down by more than -3% after Northland Securities downgraded the stock to market perform from outperform.
Goldman Sachs (GS) closed down more than -2% after reporting Q3 equities sales and trading revenue of $3.74 billion, below the consensus of $3.94 billion.
CyberArk Software (CYBR) closed down more than -2% after Barclays downgraded the stock to equal weight from overweight.
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) closed down more than -1% despite raising its full-year net interest income estimate after CEO Dimon said he sees some softness in the US economy.
Navitas Semiconductor (NVTS) closed up more than +26% after unveiling its 100 V GaN FETs, 650 V GaN, and high voltage SIC devices for Nvidia’s 800 VDC AI factory architecture. This will enable direct conversion from 13.8 kVAC utility power to 88 VDC within the data center power room.
Polaris Inc. (PII) closed up more than +14% after saying it will separate Indian Motorcycle from its portfolio into a standalone company and enter into a definitive agreement to sell a majority stake to Carolwood LP.
Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC) closed up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q3 revenue of $21.44 billion, above the consensus of $21.16 billion.
Walmart (WMT) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after announcing that it was teaming up with OpenAI to enable shoppers to browse and purchase products on ChatGPT.
Caterpillar (CAT) closed up more than +4% after JPMorgan Chase raised its price target on the stock to $650 from $505, citing expectations for accelerating revenue growth.
HP Inc (HPQ) closed up more than +4% after HSBC upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $30.
Domino’s Pizza (DPZ) closed up more than +3% after reporting Q3 total domestic stores comparable sales growth of 5.2%, which is better than the consensus of 4.28%.

Notable Two Hundred Day Moving Average Cross - HUM

On Thursday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (“CMS”) released the 2026 Star Ratings for Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (“MAPD”) plans. The five-star rating system evaluates Medicare health care and drug plans to ensure they meet CMS’ quality standards, with plans rated four stars or higher qualifying for bonus payments. CVS Health’s CVS insurer, Aetna, continues to rank among the top tier of large, publicly traded companies, supported by high-quality performance across several of its largest Medicare Advantage contracts. More than 81% of Aetna MA members are in plans rated 4.0 stars or higher, with more than 63% of members in a 4.5-star plan for 2026.
CVS’ key rivals, Humana HUM and UnitedHealth Group UNH, had previously reported preliminary 2026 Star Ratings data. Humana has nearly 20% of its members enrolled in plans rated 4 stars and above, with 14% of members in 4.5-star plans. The company’s average Star rating of 3.61 is consistent with last year’s levels. On the other hand, UnitedHealth Group estimated that it would have approximately 78% of its members in four-star or higher plans. According to Reuters, citing Oppenheimer analysts, both insurers’ final star ratings were in line with their prior expectations.

CVS shares opened 1.6% higher on Oct. 10 following the after-hours announcement and ended the session at $77.90. The stock’s impressive year-to-date run now extends to 73.5%, outpacing both the industry’s 1.5% decline and the Medical sector’s modest 0.1% gains. In the same time frame, Humana shares rose 10.4%, while UnitedHealth stock declined 29.9%.

A Peek Into Aetna’s 2026 MA Plans
Aetna has unveiled the 2026 MA Plans centering around three key elements — access, simplicity and care. The company’s 2026 MADP plans will be available across 43 states and Washington, D.C., covering nearly 57 million Medicare-eligible beneficiaries. Key highlights include a $2,100 maximum annual out-of-pocket for covered prescription drugs and affordable SilverScript prescription drug plan coverage.
In every county where plans are available, Aetna provides a $0 monthly premium plan. These also come with $0 copays for Tier 1 drugs at in-network pharmacies and include dental, vision and hearing benefits, along with a SilverSneakers fitness membership. Aetna estimates that 82% of the Medicare-eligible beneficiaries will have access to a $0 premium MA plan.
Further, eligible members can use the Extra Benefits Card, powered by CVS Health’s OTC Health Solutions, on certain services and products at CVS stores and at more than 70,000 additional participating locations. Aetna offers certain in-network services at no additional costs, including $0 copays for annual physicals, colonoscopies, mammograms, routine eye and hearing exams, and $0 copays for primary care visits and labs for some plans. All MA plans include an annual Healthy Home Visit from a licensed Signify Health clinician at no extra cost.
In 2026, Aetna is broadening its Special Needs Plans (SNPs), which provide additional targeted benefits to eligible members. Chronic Condition SNPs (C-SNPs) will expand to 18 states, including 16 new ones. Dual Eligible (D-SNPs) will grow to 119 new counties, with all members receiving a monthly allowance on an Extra Benefits Card for approved over-the-counter products.
Innovation-Driven Aetna Boosts Optimism for CVS
Earlier this year, Aetna introduced an approach to bundling approvals for prior authorizations for certain cancer-related scans and tests, making it one upfront approval instead of multiple approvals over months. The move builds on CVS’ years-long effort to simplify and reduce unnecessary complexities in health care to make critical medications available more quickly. Currently, Aetna has one of the shortest lists of treatments and procedures that require prior authorization, approving more than 95% eligible requests within 24 hours.
In addition, Aetna’s Clinical Collaboration program is on track to be implemented in 10 hospitals by the end of 2025. The program helps reduce the standard 30-day readmission rates and emergency room visits while easing the administrative load on hospitals and clinical personnel. As part of CVS Health’s $20 billion multi-year digital health care investment, Aetna rolled out Aetna Care Paths, a first-to-market care option available within the Aetna Health app.

What’s Pressuring CVS Health?
The company’s retail pharmacy, specialty pharmacy and long-term care pharmacy (LTC) operations are facing ongoing reimbursement pressures from competition, client demands for lower prices, generic drug pricing, earlier-than-expected generic drug introductions and network reimbursement challenges. Increased utilization trends are also expected to continue exerting pressure on CVS’ Healthcare Benefits segment and its healthcare delivery assets throughout the remainder of 2025.
Additionally, legal issues are mounting for CVS Health. A federal court ordered its pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), Caremark, to pay nearly $290 million in damages following a decade-long allegation of overcharging Medicare for prescription drugs.
