HSBC appears to be a large and well-established bank in terms of scale, but the current valuation already appears to reflect its strengths to a significant extent. The multiples paint a mixed picture: P/E of 27.97 and P/S of 7.17 are materially above the industry median, while P/B of 1.65 is also above average, which limits the potential for further upside without an acceleration in earnings. At the same time, P/FCF of 4.12 looks attractive and is notably below the industry median, supporting the case for solid free cash flow generation. The recent trend in P/E and P/B over the last few quarters has generally not deteriorated dramatically, but it also does not provide a convincing signal of clear undervaluation. Profitability remains a weak point: ROE of 5.89, ROA of 0.38, and ROI of 3.84 are below the industry median, while return on tangible equity of 9.37 also does not look strong for a bank of this scale. At the same time, net profit margin is very high, but for the financial sector this metric should be interpreted cautiously, since it is not always directly comparable with non-financial companies. Operating profit and operating margin look weak and volatile, which reduces confidence in the sustainability of current earnings quality. On the other hand, TTM net income of 6.94 billion and revenue of 10.45 billion remain substantial and generally support the fundamental base. The company’s balance sheet is large and liquid in absolute terms: cash on hand exceeds 1 trillion, assets are around 3.23 trillion, and equity is nearly 197 billion, indicating strong systemic resilience. However, the quick ratio is zero, the current ratio is below 1, and debt to capital is above the median, so liquidity and leverage do not justify an aggressive upward revision in valuation. Dividend yield has declined from higher levels seen last year to 0.57, which reduces the stock’s appeal for income investors. Overall, the fundamentals support a moderately cautious view: the business is large and financially stable, but the valuation no longer looks cheap, and profitability and the dividend profile are not strong enough to justify a meaningful increase in the target price.

HSBC remains a large and resilient bank, but its high valuation, weak profitability, and declining dividend yield limit growth potential.

State Street Corporation STT has signed an initial agreement to acquire Santander CACEIS Latam Securities Services, a joint venture (JV) owned by Santander Group and CACEIS. This is part of the company’s effort to expand its investment servicing footprint across Latin America.
The JV oversees approximately $470 billion in assets under custody (“AUC”) and $225 billion in assets under administration (“AUA”) as of June 30, 2026. The transaction will strengthen State Street’s presence in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia by expanding its custody, foreign exchange, fund administration and other middle- and back-office services. This will enable the company to better serve both regional and global institutional investors.
The financial terms of the deal have not been revealed yet. It is expected to be closed sometime in 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, employee consultation processes and other customary closing conditions.
Following the completion, State Street plans to retain the JV’s experienced local workforce and continue operating through its existing market licenses and regulatory frameworks. The company expects the combination of its global servicing platform with the JV’s local expertise to strengthen its ability to support clients with cross-border investment needs while expanding access to fast-growing Latin American markets.
Our Take on State Street’s Global Expansion Strategy
The impending acquisition is in line with State Street’s strategy of expanding its global investment servicing franchise through targeted acquisitions. It will strengthen the company’s presence across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, further broadening its footprint in Latin America’s largest institutional investment markets.
State Street also continues to expand through new investment servicing mandates and rising client assets. As of June 30, 2026, the company reported record assets under custody and/or administration (AUC/A) of $57.86 trillion and record assets under management (AUM) of $6.28 trillion. This reflects continued business wins, client inflows and favorable market conditions.
Additionally, STT remains focused on investing in technology and enhancing its end-to-end servicing capabilities to support long-term revenue growth.

State Street to Expand Latam Presence With Santander CACEIS JV Buyout

Shares of HSBC Holdings HSBC have gained 2.2% since the announcement of the deal to divest its Singapore life and health insurance business to Germany-based Allianz SE for $2.09 billion last week. This marks another step in the bank’s ongoing strategy to streamline operations and sharpen its focus on its core wealth management and wholesale banking businesses in the Asia region.
The deal is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027, subject to consent from the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Upon completion, HSBC Bank (Singapore) and HSBC Life Singapore will enter into an exclusive 15-year bancassurance distribution agreement with Allianz. This will allow HSBC to continue offering the life and health insurance products to its retail banking and wealth management customers in Singapore.
This transaction is expected to generate a pre-tax gain of approximately $1.8 billion and increase its Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio by up to 15 basis points following the upstreaming of the distributable gain. HSBC will receive an upfront payment of $200 million from Allianz under the long-term distribution agreement, with additional variable consideration linked to performance.
The sale is a U-turn for HSBC. In 2022, it had acquired AXA Singapore to strengthen its insurance presence in the country. Nonetheless, this May, the company announced it was reviewing HSBC Life Singapore's insurance business, intending to focus on higher-growth operations.
Our Take on HSBC’s Asia Focus Strategy
The divestiture aligns with HSBC’s ongoing simplification and restructuring strategy, which focuses on streamlining its global operations, exiting non-core businesses, redeploying capital to higher-return opportunities, and strengthening its wealth management and wholesale banking franchises in Asia.
By adopting a capital-light bancassurance model in Singapore, the company will continue distributing insurance products without maintaining capital-intensive insurance manufacturing operations.
HSBC has narrowed its investment banking activities in the U.K., Europe and the United States while sharpening its focus on Asia and the Middle East. This year, the bank completed the privatization of Hang Seng Bank and divested its U.K. life insurance business, as well as its retail banking operations in South Africa and Sri Lanka.
HSBC also reclassified its Malta business as held for sale and agreed to sell its Indonesian retail banking business while strategic reviews of its retail operations in Australia, Turkey and Egypt remain underway.
Over the past three months, shares of HSBC have gained 16.4%, outperforming the industry's rally of 15.1%.

HSBC to Divest Singapore Insurance Unit to Allianz for $2.09B

HSBC initiated coverage of SpaceX on Friday with a Hold rating and a $115 price target, below the company's $135 IPO price.

Shares closed Friday within pennies of the new target, roughly 50% under their post-IPO high.
SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) got a new review from a major bank on Friday, and it wasn't the vote of confidence shareholders were hoping for. HSBC initiated coverage of the rocket and satellite company with a Hold rating and a $115 price target. That number sits below the $135 price at which SpaceX went public in June.
The market wasted no time making its own statement. Shares fell as much as 6% on Friday, dipping below the new target shortly after its publication, before closing at $115.07 -- seven cents above it.

That makes SpaceX the rare stock that trades simultaneously below its IPO price, right at a major bank's days-old price target, and roughly 50% below the high of $225.64 it reached shortly after its debut.
What's most interesting about HSBC's math, though, is how generous it tried to be.
A premium for Musk, and still a Hold
HSBC built its valuation as a sum of the parts, adding up what it believes SpaceX's businesses are worth. Then it did something unusual. It applied a 2x premium to account for CEO Elon Musk's track record of commercializing disruptive technologies. In other words, the bank built a 2x innovation premium into its sum-of-the-parts math, on the theory that Musk has repeatedly built industries where none existed.
Even with that premium, the answer came back at $115, along with a conclusion that the price already reflects much of the company's long-term growth potential -- including continued expansion of Starlink, rising launch activity, and the development of its artificial intelligence initiatives. The bank did sketch a friendlier picture. Its most optimistic scenario, which assumes the Starship rocket becomes commercially viable starting in 2027 and launch capacity doubles, values the stock at $293 per share. But that's the ceiling case, not the expectation.
That's the detail I'd sit with. When a valuation grants the founder credit most models never grant, and still can't reach the IPO price, the exercise says as much about the price as it does about the company.
The disagreement is enormous
To be fair, HSBC is one voice, and a notably cautious one next to the rest of Wall Street. The average price target on SpaceX sits at about $237, more than twice the recent share price. Even more telling, individual targets range from $62 all the way to $800. A range that wide is less a forecast than an admission that nobody has figured out how to value this company yet. And HSBC's Hold rating, for what it's worth, implies the stock roughly treads water from here. The bank's caution is about the price, not the business.
The fundamentals explain the confusion. SpaceX's trailing-12-month revenue totals about $19 billion, and its 2025 revenue grew 33% -- remarkable growth for an industrial company. But the stock's market capitalization stands at about $1.5 trillion, which values the company at more than 75 times its sales. The business remains unprofitable, too, as it pours money into developing its Starship rocket. There are no earnings to check the valuation against yet, and there won't be for some time.
Hard evidence is finally coming, though. SpaceX is expected to report its first quarterly results as a public company on Aug. 4, giving investors their first standardized look at the company's finances since the IPO. The first wave of insider share lockups begins expiring shortly after the report. For a debate currently running on beliefs, that report is the first common set of facts both sides will have to reckon with -- and every model on Wall Street, HSBC's included, gets rebuilt on real quarterly disclosure from that day forward.
So, is the newly cheaper stock worth buying now that it has fallen to even a skeptic's target? I don't think the target itself should drive anyone's decision. HSBC's $115 is one bank's estimate, and the consensus near $237 is an average of guesses that disagree with one another by hundreds of dollars.
My takeaway is simply that SpaceX's current valuation continues to require a lot of imagination to justify. A major bank went looking for reasons to be generous with SpaceX, applied the biggest one it could justify, and still concluded the stock was worth less than its IPO price.
I'm not buying before the company's Aug. 4 numbers are released. Sure, a business compounding revenue at 33% deserves respect. But at a $1.5 trillion valuation, I want to see more momentum in its financials before paying up for this stock.

HSBC Just Started Covering SpaceX With a $115 Price Target. The Stock Closed Friday at $115.07.

(RTTNews) - Mastercard Inc. (MA), the U.S. payments network, Thursday announced expansion of 'In Control' virtual card number platform with new security controls, embedded payments and a single API connection.
The payments company said the enhancements to its business-to-business payments platform were aimed at helping issuers, corporates and platforms manage virtual card programs with greater control and less integration work.
Mastercard said its virtual card ecosystem now spans issuers, direct platforms and corporates across 43 countries and 174 currencies. The company cited data from Kaiser Associates calling 'In Control' the industry-leading virtual card number platform.
The Company will be rolling out two new controls across the virtual card lifecycle. 'Issuer Enforced Controls' let issuers set spend limits, transaction caps and validity periods at card creation. 'Clearing Controls,' first introduced last year, is intended to let corporates and platforms block invalid transactions and manage payment timing beyond authorization.
Citigroup Inc. (C), the U.S. bank, is live with both controls and is expected to be the first issuer to roll them out globally later this year, Mastercard said.
The Company also expanded 'Commercial Connect API,' the market's only single API front door for virtual cards, according to Kaiser Associates.
New features include the ability to apply multiple control sets at the real card level and to combine virtual card creation and payment initiation in one step.
Mastercard said fraud rates on virtual cards were less than one-fifth of those on non-virtual cards, and even lower for cards issued through 'In Control.'
Since launching its embedded virtual card program in March 2025, Mastercard said dozens of partners in expense management, ERP, accounts payable, travel, hospitality, healthcare and e-commerce had joined. It cited a new integration with SAP SE (SAP), the German software company, and a mobile virtual card launch with HSBC Holdings Plc. (HSBA.L), the UK bank, in the UAE.
On the NYSE, shares of Mastercard are currently losing 0.86 percent, changing hands at $527.41.

The company's 2026 economic and market outlook said that "ex-U.S. equities" -- international stocks not including the U.S. -- are expected to deliver 4.9% to 6.9% average annual returns for the next 10 years, while U.S. stocks are expected to deliver only 4% to 5% returns. Another Vanguard report in June predicted that some of the best long-term gains from the artificial intelligence (AI) boom might go not to AI stocks, but to "developed markets outside the U.S." as global companies use AI to improve their operations.

Although Vanguard's research doesn't recommend any specific stocks or exchange-traded funds (ETFs), if you agree with this forecast, buying international dividend stocks could be a good strategy. That's because international stocks that pay high dividend yields tend to come from developed markets such as Japan, Canada, and Western Europe.
The Vanguard International High Dividend Yield ETF (NASDAQ: VYMI) and the Vanguard International Dividend Appreciation ETF (NASDAQ: VIGI) are two Vanguard ETFs that offer exposure to international dividend stocks. Both hold portfolios that include the types of stocks that Vanguard research says might outperform in the next few years.
But in the past 10 years, the Vanguard International High Dividend Yield ETF has delivered a total return of 188.1%, strongly outperforming the other fund:
Let's look at these two Vanguard international ETFs and see which could be a better choice for your investment dollars.
Vanguard International High Dividend Yield ETF (VYMI): 1,578 stocks, 10 years of 11.2% annualized returns
The Vanguard International High Dividend Yield ETF has had a strong recent run of performance. At recent prices, it has delivered a total return of 24% in the past year, which has outperformed the S&P 500 index.
Over a longer-term time horizon, the fund's past performance is less strong, but still solid. This international ETF has delivered annualized total returns (by net asset value) of 22% for the past three years, 12.9% for the past five years, and 11.2% for the past 10 years. It charges a low expense ratio of 0.07%.
Could this fund be a good choice for the future? It holds a diversified portfolio of 1,578 global stocks. If you want developed market stocks, this fund can provide that exposure. Its portfolio consists of 43.7% European stocks, 23.8% Pacific region stocks, and only 22.8% emerging markets.
This ETF's top five countries included in the portfolio are Japan (11.5% of the fund), the United Kingdom (11%), Canada (8.9%), Switzerland (7.5%), and Australia (7.3%). The fund's top 10 stock holdings include international banks such as HSBC Holdings (NYSE: HSBC), pharmaceutical giants such as Roche Holding (OTC: RHHBY), energy major Shell (NYSE: SHEL), and Australian mining company BHP Group (NYSE: BHP).
If you're concerned that U.S. tech stocks have gotten overheated, this fund can put your money to work in different parts of the global economy. Companies like these tend to be well-established and financially strong, which enables them to return lots of cash to shareholders. This dividend ETF has delivered a trailing-12-month dividend yield of 3.68%, which is higher than many of the best dividend index funds. And this fund has a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 14.02, which makes it look much cheaper than the S&P 500 index earnings multiple of 25.37.
Vanguard International Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIGI): 343 stocks, 10 years of 7.98% annualized returns
Another way to invest in international dividend stocks is to use the Vanguard International Dividend Appreciation ETF. This fund uses a different approach. Instead of more than 1,500 stocks, its portfolio holds only 343 stocks. This fund is even more focused on developed markets, with only 5.1% of its assets invested in emerging-market stocks. It charges the same low 0.07% expense ratio as the other Vanguard fund.
The Vanguard International Dividend Appreciation ETF has some of the same names as VYMI in its top 10 stock holdings. It owns international banks such as Royal Bank of Canada (NYSE: RY) and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (NYSE: MUFG), pharma stocks such as Roche Holding and Novartis (NYSE: NVS), and German tech and industrial companies SAP (NYSE: SAP) and Schneider Electric (OTC: SBGSY).
However, this fund has not performed as well as the other Vanguard international ETF. The Vanguard International Dividend Appreciation ETF has delivered average annual returns of 8% in the past year, 10.8% in the past three years, 4.6% in the past five years, and 7.98% in the past 10 years. It has underperformed the S&P 500 in all those time frames.
This dividend ETF is also lagging the other fund's dividend yield, with a trailing-12-month yield of 2.13%. And the Vanguard International Dividend Appreciation ETF has a more expensive P/E ratio at 19.33.
One possible risk of this fund is that its portfolio is less diversified than the other Vanguard ETF. The Vanguard International Dividend Appreciation ETF has almost 80% of its portfolio invested in its top five markets:
Japan: 30.9% of the fund
Canada: 23%
Switzerland: 14.4%
Germany: 5.5%
United Kingdom: 5.6%
That's a rather highly concentrated bet on just a few countries. If any of those countries experiences an economic downturn or a weakening of its currency against the U.S. dollar, that could be bad news for American investors in this fund.
Why buy VYMI vs. VIGI
Recent Vanguard research says developed markets outside the U.S. could outperform in the next few years; both funds fit that strategy. And in case you're concerned about high valuations of tech companies, these international dividend stock ETFs tend to hold value stocks, not growth stocks. The companies represented in these funds are involved in different parts of the global economy that are less directly involved with the AI boom.
But the Vanguard International High Dividend Yield ETF is more diversified, its P/E ratio is lower, and it has a track record of paying a higher dividend yield in the past 12 months. I believe this fund is a better choice for most long-term investors who want exposure to high-yield dividend stocks outside the U.S. market.

As core international stock ETFs go, the iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF (NYSEMKT: IEFA) and the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (NASDAQ: VXUS) are among the best. Both have expense ratios of less than 0.1%. Both hold thousands of stocks, making diversification a non-issue.
But they're not nearly the same. Their target markets are different. Their key holdings are different. Their sector exposures are different. Both can act as core international equity funds, but the reality of these ETFs is very simple: One is a complete international fund, and one is not.

iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF
IEFA tracks the MSCI EAFE IMI Index, which covers around 2,600 stocks from nearly two dozen developed markets outside the United States and Canada. Japan (26%) and the U.K. (14%) alone account for around 40% of the portfolio. Financials (23%), industrials (19%), and tech (12%) are the top three sector holdings.
But the key point is that the iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF holds only developed-market stocks. That means you'd need to pair this fund with an emerging markets fund, such as the iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF, to cover the entire international equity market.

Roche: 1.2%
AstraZeneca: 1.2%
Novartis: 1.1%
This fund is the choice if you want solely stocks from developed markets or if you're interested in pairing it with a second fund for total international exposure.
Vanguard Total International Stock ETF
VXUS tracks the FTSE Global All Cap ex-US Index, which holds around 8,700 stocks across both developed and emerging markets. Around 26% of the fund is in emerging markets, with the remainder in non-U.S. developed markets, including Canada. Japan (15%), Taiwan (9%), and the U.K. (8%) are the biggest country allocations. Financials (22%), tech (21%), and industrials (15%) are the top three sector holdings.
The biggest distinction, again, is that the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF invests in virtually all non-U.S. stocks worldwide. It's more comprehensive globally, which is reflected in the much smaller country weightings. The addition of emerging markets gives the tech sector a much larger weighting, especially in some of the larger artificial intelligence (AI) stocks of the moment.

This fund is the choice if you want total international stock coverage in a single ticker.
VXUS is a better choice than IEFA
From a simplicity standpoint, the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF is the better choice. Including both developed and emerging markets in a diversified equity portfolio is preferable, given that the latter category includes many of the big foreign tech companies driving the AI theme at the moment.
The iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF is reasonable enough if you want to stick just with developed economies. But the diversified approach is the better one.

IEFA vs. VXUS: Both Are Cheap. Both Are Broad. Here Is the Key Difference Long-Term Investors Need to Understand.

HSBC Holdings plc HSBC is reportedly in early-stage discussions with Emirates NBD over a potential sale of its Turkish banking operations, per a Bloomberg report, citing people familiar with the matter. While neither lender has confirmed the negotiations, the development aligns with HSBC’s ongoing strategy of streamlining its international footprint and concentrating resources on higher-growth core markets.
If completed, the transaction would represent another significant step in HSBC’s portfolio optimization efforts under CEO Georges Elhedery, who has prioritized simplifying the bank’s global operations while improving efficiency and capital allocation.
HSBC has steadily reduced its presence in Turkey over the past decade as challenging economic conditions, currency volatility, regulatory pressures and intense competition affected profitability.
Once operating more than 300 branches in the country, the bank now maintains a significantly smaller network.
A potential divestment would be consistent with HSBC’s broader restructuring program, following recent exits from businesses in markets such as Germany, South Africa and Malta, while reinforcing its strategic focus on the U.K., Asia and the Middle East.
How Can the Deal Benefit Emirates NBD?
For Emirates NBD, acquiring HSBC Turkey would strengthen an already established presence through DenizBank, which it acquired from Sberbank in 2019.
The combination could create a more diversified banking franchise, with DenizBank’s strengths in retail, SME and agricultural banking complementing HSBC Turkey’s capabilities in wholesale banking, trade finance and wealth management.
The transaction could modestly expand Emirates NBD’s Turkish asset base despite ongoing macroeconomic risks, including inflation and currency volatility.
Conclusion
Although any transaction would require regulatory approval and the negotiations are currently preliminary, a potential sale highlights HSBC’s continued commitment to optimizing its global portfolio while focusing investment on markets that offer stronger long-term growth prospects.

Divestitures & Acquisitions by Other Finance Firms
Last month, Invesco IVZ completed the transfer of its Canadian fund management business to CI Global Asset Management (CI GAM), marking the close of a deal that significantly reshapes the Canadian investment fund landscape.

Creation of new units will mean the underlying holdings of the ETF need to be purchased, while destruction of units involves selling underlying holdings, so large flows can also impact the individual components held within ETFs.
