(RTTNews) - British lending major HSBC Holdings Plc (HSBA.L, HSBC) reported Tuesday weak profit in its third quarter amid a 24% growth in operating expenses, despite higher revenues. Further, the company lifted its forecast for fiscal 2025 banking Net interest income.
In Hong Kong, HSBC shares were gaining around 1.1 percent to trade at HK$103.100.
In the third quarter, profit before tax fell 14 percent to $7.30 billion from last year's $8.48 billion.
Profit attributable to ordinary shareholders of the parent company declined to $4.87 billion from last year's $6.13 billion. Earnings per share were $0.28, compared to $0.34 a year ago.
Adjusted profit before tax was $9.10 billion, compared to $8.73 billion a in the prior year. Basic adjusted earnings per share were $0.36, compared to $0.34 last year.
Operating expenses grew to $10.08 billion from last year's $8.14 billion.
Revenue grew 5 percent to $17.79 billion from prior year's $17 billion, benefited mainly by growth in fee and other income in Wealth in International Wealth and Premier Banking and Hong Kong business segments, supported by higher customer activity.
Adjusted revenue increased 4 percent year-over-year to $17.90 billion.
Net operating income grew to $16.78 billion from $16.01 billion last year. Net interest income climbed 15 percent from last year to $8.78 billion. Net interest margin of 1.57 percent increased by 11 basis points from prior year's 1.46 percent.
Further, the Board has approved a third interim dividend for 2025 of $0.10 per share.
Looking ahead, HSBC now expects banking Net interest income to be $43 billion or better in 2025, reflecting increased confidence in the near-term trajectory for policy rates in key markets, including in Hong Kong and the UK.
The bank previously expected banking NII of around $42 billion in 2025.
The company said it expects to deliver a mid-teens or better RoTE for 2025, excluding notable items. The guidance reflects a seasonally lower RoTE in the fourth quarter, which includes historically lower client activity in Wealth and certain cost items specific to the fourth quarter.
Further, the company maintained confidence in its ability to deliver mid-teens RoTE target, excluding notable items for 2026 and 2027.
HSBC continues to expect double-digit percentage average annual growth in fee and other income in Wealth over the medium term.

HSBC Q3 Profit Down, Revenues Rise; Lifts FY25 Banking NII View

(RTTNews) - HSBC Holdings plc (HSBC, HSBA.L,HBC1.DE,HSHD.SI, 0005.HK) announced that it will recognize a provision of US$1.1 billion in its consolidated financial results for the third quarter of 2025, following a recent ruling in the long-running Herald Fund SPC litigation related to the Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC fraud.
The provision is expected to impact the Group's CET1 capital ratio by approximately 15 basis points and will be classified as a material notable item. HSBC confirmed that this will not affect its fiscal year 2025 return on tangible equity (RoTE) excluding notable items, nor its dividend plans.
The litigation stems from a 2009 lawsuit in Luxembourg, where HSBC Securities Services Luxembourg (HSSL) is defending against claims by Herald Fund SPC for restitution of securities and cash. On 24 October 2025, the Luxembourg Court of Cassation denied HSSL's appeal concerning the securities claim but upheld its appeal regarding the cash claim. HSSL now intends to pursue a second appeal before the Luxembourg Court of Appeal.
Should HSSL be unsuccessful in the second appeal, it will challenge the quantum of any payment required in subsequent proceedings. HSBC noted that the final financial impact remains uncertain due to the complexities surrounding the case.
HSBC announced it will release its third-quarter results for fiscal year 2025 on 28 October 2025.

RBC Capital and raised its price target to $31 from $26.
HSBC upgraded Halliburton to buy from hold and lifted its price target to $30 from $23.
Stifel raised the price target on Halliburton to $32 from $27.

Nvidia
Nvidia is an accelerated computing company best known for its graphics processing units (GPUs), chips also known as data center accelerators because they speed up artificial intelligence (AI) and other demanding workloads. Nvidia holds more than 90% market share in data center GPUs, a market forecast to grow at 36% annually through 2033, and the company is well positioned to maintain its leadership.
Nvidia has differentiated itself with a full-stack approach to accelerated computing, meaning it goes beyond GPUs to build entire data center systems complete with CPUs, interconnects, networking, and software. That vertical integration lets Nvidia build rack-scale solutions like the GB200 NVL72, which pairs 36 Grace CPUs with 72 Blackwell GPUs connected with NVLink Switch technology to create a single accelerated system.
Nvidia also provides InfiniBand and Ethernet networking platforms, which can connect multiple GB200 NVL72 systems. In fact, the company leads the market in generative AI networking gear, according to Morningstar. But the competitive moat most often overlooked is CUDA, a software platform that brings together code libraries, pretrained models, and frameworks to help developers write GPU-accelerated applications.
Nvidia naysayers often highlight growing adoption of custom accelerators from rivals like Broadcom. But those chips lack supporting software, which means it must be built from scratch. Few companies possess the technical knowhow and resources to do that, which will ultimately limit adoption. Meanwhile, AMD GPUs have supporting software, but it pales in comparison to CUDA.
In short, Nvidia is well positioned to retain its leadership in AI infrastructure due to its full-stack strategy. Its ability to design entire data centers lets it build systems with a lower total cost of ownership, meaning its products are actually cheaper after operating expenses are factored into the equation. Broadcom and AMD may gain a little market share, but neither company is likely to be a substantial threat to Nvidia any time soon.
Wall Street expects Nvidia's earnings to increase at 36% annually over the next three years. That makes the current valuation of 52 times earnings look surprisingly reasonable. Shares have skyrocketed 1,250% since November 2023, when the launch of ChatGPT started the AI boom, but Nvidia stock is still worth buying today.
2. Microsoft
Microsoft is the largest enterprise software company in the world. Its best known product is the office productivity suite, which includes applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. But Microsoft is truly formidable because it has a strong presence across several other end markets, including business intelligence, cybersecurity, and enterprise resource planning.
Microsoft is well positioned to monetize artificial intelligence due to the popularity of its software, and the company is executing on that opportunity. Its copilot applications, generative AI tools that automate tasks across other software products, topped 100 million monthly active users in the most recent quarter, according to CEO Satya Nadella.
Also, Microsoft Azure is the second largest public cloud after Amazon Web Services, which again leaves the company well positioned to monetize artificial intelligence. Cloud services revenue increased faster than 30% in each of the last eight quarters and growth actually accelerated to 39% in the most recent quarter, the strongest number in the last two years.
Investors have good reason to believe Microsoft can maintain that momentum. Management says Azure has been capacity constrained for the duration of the AI boom, meaning demand for AI services has outpaced the available compute supply. But Microsoft is scaling its data center capacity faster than any other cloud services company, according to Satya Nadella.
Wall Street expects Microsoft's earnings to increase at 12% annually over the next three years, which roughly matches forecasted growth in the enterprise software market during that period. But that makes the current valuation of 38 times earnings look too expensive. Those numbers give a price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio of 3.1. But Nvidia has a PEG ratio of 1.4, meaning the stock is literally twice as cheap by that particular metric.

2 Trillion-Dollar Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks to Buy Before They Soar in 2026, According to Wall Street

The Bank of New York Mellon Corp. BK is exploring tokenized deposits to accelerate its efforts to modernize its payment network and expand the use of blockchain in global finance. This was reported by a Cryptonews article citing a Bloomberg report.
This move, led by Carl Slabicki, executive platform owner for Treasury Services at BNY Mellon, aims to enable clients to make payments through a blockchain network using tokenized versions of traditional deposits.
The project has been structured to facilitate real-time, instant and global transactions across BK’s international network.
Rationale Behind BNY Mellon’s Move
Tokenized deposits act as a digital representation of customers’ deposits held at a commercial bank. By operating on a Blockchain network, these deposits can be transferred quickly, allowing a real-time settlement of transactions without any delays on intermediaries.
Slabicki stated that tokenized deposits could help “banks overcome legacy technology constraints” through faster and efficient deposit and payment movement across the financial systems.
BNY Mellon’s treasury services division handles nearly $2.5 trillion worth of payments daily. Tokenized deposits can make these payments cheaper, faster and available round-the-clock.
This move aligns with BK’s broader blockchain strategy. In July, the firm collaborated with Goldman Sachs to use blockchain to maintain a record of customers’ ownership for money market funds. The bank is also part of more than 30 international financial institutions collaborating with Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) on a blockchain-based shared ledger aimed at enabling real-time cross-border payments.

Last month, HSBC Holdings HSBC expanded its tokenized deposit service for corporate clients, enabling them to safely transfer currencies in real-time with instant settlement, thereby supporting cross-border transactions.
This move by HSBC builds upon the successful rollout of the tokenized deposit service for domestic payments in Hong Kong and Singapore earlier this year. The service has been extended to the UK and Luxembourg markets.
Similarly, in August, JPMorgan JPM partnered with Coinbase Global COIN, marking a pivotal step toward mainstream cryptocurrency adoption in the United States.
Customers will soon be able to connect their JPMorgan accounts directly to Coinbase wallets through a secure API, eliminating reliance on third-party aggregators. Starting fall 2025, Chase credit cards will support direct crypto purchases, and by 2026, users will be able to convert Chase Ultimate Rewards points into USDC, marking the first time a major rewards program is linked to a stablecoin.
This collaboration enhances compliance and security by embedding KYC and AML processes directly into JPMorgan’s infrastructure. Bypassing aggregators reduces data privacy risks and offers the bank greater control over fiat-to-crypto flows. The partnership is also pioneering the use of stablecoins and tokenized bank deposits, with JPMorgan piloting its own deposit token on Coinbase’s Base blockchain.

International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) stock jumped 1.6% through 10:30 a.m. ET Friday after Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring called it the "clear leader" in quantum computing.
Curiously, the reason Morgan Stanley said this stems from another announcement by another bank entirely: HSBC (NYSE: HSBC).

HSBC's big quantum news
HSBC says that it "successfully used quantum computing in a trial to optimize bond trading, making it the first in the world to prove the value of the powerful emerging technology in the financial services industry." More importantly to investors, though, HSBC used a "Heron" quantum processor from IBM to accomplish this.
As CBS reports, use of the IBM quantum chip helped HSBC deliver "a 34% improvement in algorithmic bond price predictions" (i.e., it helped HSBC better predict bond prices before they happened, so that HSBC could more effectively buy low and sell high).
What does this mean for investors?
Better accuracy in predicting bond prices should naturally translate into better profits for HSBC as it trades bonds. That's good news for HSBC. It's almost certainly good news for IBM, too, which now has a real-world example of how banks can use its quantum computers to make money -- that they can then spend on buying more IBM quantum computers!
More broadly, though, this development is good news for investors in quantum stocks in general. As HSBC explained, "we have great confidence we are on the cusp of a new frontier of computing in financial services, rather than something that is far away in the future."
And that means the day when current money-losing quantum stocks start earning profits could be a lot nearer than many investors think.

Why IBM Stock Popped on Friday

International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) has been working on quantum computing technology for decades. The company's quantum computing roadmap calls for a demonstration of quantum advantage, where a quantum computer outperforms a classical computer, by 2026 through combining the two technologies. The first fault-tolerant quantum computer is expected by 2029, with IBM scaling up after that.
While large-scale quantum computers are still many years away, IBM and HSBC announced a significant quantum computing breakthrough on Thursday. Detailed in a recently submitted scientific paper and a press release on HSBC's website, the bank used IBM's quantum computers paired with standard techniques to improve a particular process in algorithmic bond trading. This was just a trial, but it demonstrates the potential for IBM's quantum computing technology to deliver real-world benefits.

A quantum computing first
In the corporate bond market, customer inquiries are priced in a competitive bidding process using computer models and classical algorithms. This process is complicated and must incorporate real-time market conditions, risk estimates, and other factors.
In collaboration with IBM, HSBC leveraged a quantum algorithm running on IBM's Heron quantum processor to tackle the process of estimating how likely a trade is to be filled at a quoted price in the over-the-counter European bond market. By pairing quantum computing with standard machine learning techniques, HSBC was able to improve this process by as much as 34% compared to using solely nonquantum techniques.
"This is a ground-breaking world-first in bond trading. It means we now have a tangible example of how today's quantum computers could solve a real-world business problem at scale and offer a competitive edge, which will only continue to grow as quantum computers advance," said HSBC quantum head Philip Intallura in the press release.
This development follows IBM's announcement in August that it was collaborating with AMD to develop next-generation computing architectures that combine quantum computers and high-performance classical computers. IBM's strategy, dubbed quantum-centric supercomputing, is a hybrid approach that combines quantum computers with CPUs, GPUs, and other standard chips to take on real-world problems.
The HSBC announcement is a strong signal that this hybrid approach is promising and could pay off within the next few years in the form of a quantum-centric computer that can accelerate real-world business or scientific computations.
A major opportunity for IBM
IBM's quantum computing business has already generated nearly $1 billion in bookings. Those signings are in the form of tests, trials, and explorations like the HSBC collaboration. IBM works with a wide variety of partners, including national laboratories, universities, and companies including HSBC, Boeing, Wells Fargo, and Bosch.
The HSBC findings suggest that it may not be long before IBM's quantum computing business begins generating revenue from real-world deployments of quantum computers and algorithms working in tandem with classical techniques, perhaps within a few years. While there are plenty of tricky problems to solve in the field of quantum computing before large-scale, fault-tolerant systems are viable, the technology may be useful in some real-world applications earlier in IBM's roadmap.
McKinsey estimates that the quantum computing market could reach $97 billion by 2035 and $198 billion by 2040. While these estimates should be taken with a grain of salt, they demonstrate the size of IBM's opportunity to translate its decades of quantum computing research into a multibillion-dollar business.
Meaningful quantum computing revenue isn't coming in the near term for IBM, but HSBC's results suggest that the tech giant is on the right track as it builds toward a viable quantum computing business that solves real-world problems.

AVDE, SHEL, HSBC, ASML: ETF Inflow Alert

Bank of Montreal BMO recently initiated a process to sell some of its U.S. branches, which hold approximately $6 billion in deposits, per the Wall Street Journal, as cited by Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter. The move highlights the Canadian lender’s efforts to exit select geographies and streamline its U.S. retail footprint following its largest acquisition in 2023.
Details of the BMO’s Planned Sale
According to the report, the bank is weighing the divestiture of branches in states such as Wyoming and the Dakotas. The branches may be sold either individually or in clusters and could include associated loans. However, the plans are still preliminary and may not ultimately result in a transaction.
The potential branch sale follows BMO’s $16.3 billion acquisition of BNP Paribas’ U.S. unit, Bank of the West, completed in 2023. The deal added nearly 500 branches, expanded its customer base by about 2 million, and strengthened its presence across the Midwest and Western United States.
BMO is reviewing its branch network to streamline operations, a process that often involves closures or consolidations. Such moves are common after major deals, particularly as more customers shift toward digital and mobile banking services.

In July 2025, Capital One Financial Corporation COF decided to wind down the home equity lending business it acquired while buying Discover Financial in May.
After conducting a strategic review of Discover’s home equity and refinance loan business to assess its fit within the company’s portfolio, COF announced the difficult decision to exit the business.
In June 2025, HSBC Holdings PLC HSBC announced it would close its business banking division in the United States. This announcement comes amid the company’s ongoing business simplification efforts and accelerated shift toward the Asia and Middle East regions.
The move aligns with the bank’s ongoing overhaul of its dealmaking and corporate advisory activities in the West. HSBC intends to tighten its focus on Asia and boost returns under CEO Georges Elhedery.
