The Platform Solutions segment offers credit cards and point-of-sale financing for purchase of goods or services. This segment also provides cash management services, such as deposit-taking and payment solutions for corporate and institutional clients. The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. was founded in 1869 and is headquartered in New York, New York.

Goldman Sachs looks like a high-quality financial asset, but no longer a cheap one: profitability and returns remain strong, yet the market valuation is clearly ahead of the sector. A P/E of 19.1, P/S of 5.44, and P/B of 2.51 are significantly above the sector median, which limits the potential for further re-rating without an acceleration in earnings growth. At the same time, an ROE of 13.8% and return on tangible equity of 13.8% are above industry benchmarks, while a net margin of 28.32% and an operating margin of 37.54% demonstrate high business efficiency. The year-over-year trend is generally positive: EPS, revenue, operating income, and net income are growing, while margins are gradually improving, supporting the fundamental valuation. On the other hand, ROA of 0.92% and ROI of 4.14% remain below the industry median, meaning assets and capital are not being used as efficiently as they could be. The balance sheet looks strained: debt/equity of 2.57 is significantly above the industry level, long-term debt is increasing, and a current ratio of 0.63 and quick ratio of 0.00 indicate weak short-term liquidity. A large amount of cash on hand mitigates this risk, but does not eliminate the fact that the liability structure remains heavy. The dividend yield has fallen to zero, so shareholder returns now depend almost entirely on price appreciation rather than recurring cash flow. Against the backdrop of rising earnings and revenue, this does not look like a weak business, but the high valuation already reflects much of the good news. In this setup, a modest downward revision to the forecast would be reasonable, since strong operating momentum partially offsets expensive multiples and leverage. For an investor, this is a story of high quality and durable profitability, but with limited upside from re-rating and heightened sensitivity to any slowdown in growth or deterioration in market conditions.

Speaking to a Stanford University computer science class in May, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang raised eyebrows by saying, "The amount of energy that we need for [AI] computing is likely probably 1,000 times more than we currently have." He didn't add any additional detail to his mental math and even conceded, "I wouldn't be surprised if we're off by a couple orders of magnitude." If his goal was simply to provide some tangible perspective -- for effect -- on what the energy industry needs to accomplish in the foreseeable future, then mission accomplished.
The projected scope makes sense. Also in May, Goldman Sachs predicted that the power U.S. data centers alone would need would more than double between 2025 and 2027, from 31 gigawatts (GW) to 66 GW. At peak usage, this would push the domestic AI industry's consumption from just over 4% of the nation's total power output to well over 8%. Extending this trend, Bloom Energy predicts artificial intelligence could be using up to 12% of the United States' produced electricity by 2030, and it would still just be getting started.

The same dynamics are taking shape outside of the U.S. as well, of course.
It's an opportunity, to be sure, but only for companies already ready to capitalize on it. To this end, here's a closer look at three industrial names already seeing the upside of the surge in power demand.
1. GE Vernova
GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) is the former power-generation arm of industrial titan General Electric, which began splitting itself into smaller, more manageable pieces in 2021. This particular offshoot makes everything from wind turbines to nuclear reactors to hydropower systems to power grid solutions.Its red-hot equipment right now, however, is natural gas turbines.
Originally intended for utility companies, these power plants -- capable of producing anywhere from 34.5 megawatts to 571 megawatts of power -- are ideally suited to power data centers due to their scalability, ability to be throttled as needed, and relatively small footprint. Just as important, on-premises power generation means AI data center owners/operators don't need to wait for time-consuming (and often costly) connections to a power grid. That's why PwC believes the United States' data center-driven demand for natural gas could easily quintuple between last year and 2035, with an outside chance of further growth taking shape even sooner.
GE Vernova won't supply all the turbines linked to this surge in demand for natural gas. With a companywide backlog of $176 billion (nearly two-thirds of which is gas turbine-related) versus 2026's expected revenue of about $46 billion, however -- and a gas power equipment backlog that grew from 100 GW to 116 GW in Q2 alone - this company's certainly going to meet a huge chunk of this demand.
2. Vistra
Technically speaking, Vistra (NYSE: VST) isn't an industrial company. It's categorized as a power utility, though even by utility-stock standards, it's not exactly your typical power company. While it does directly provide electricity to about 5 million residential and business customers, Vistra's core business is generating and then selling electricity on a wholesale basis to other utility companies sharing the same grid.
The company's now making the most of this flexibility too. For instance, rather than merely connecting new artificial intelligence data centers to existing grid infrastructure and treating them like any other customer, Vistra is now entering long-term power purchase agreements directly with institutions. Early this year, the company announced it had inked long-term deals with Amazon and Facebook parent Meta Platforms to supply both tech companies with the electricity needed for existing and new AI data centers.
Such arrangements still account for only a relatively small part of the company's total business. In that these long-term agreements allow Vistra to make capital investments -- particularly in nuclear power -- with a reasonably assured return on the investment, the company can add power production capacity with the confidence that ultimately allows it to build more efficient infrastructure.
In other words, it's a win-win. That's why you shouldn't be surprised to see more such dealmaking in the future, particularly from Vistra, which has already shown its interest in custom-designed power provision solutions.
3. Caterpillar
Finally, add Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) -- yes, the construction equipment company -- to your list of stocks that will benefit from the AI industry's exploding demand for electricity. It's already benefiting, in fact.
You know it best as a maker of bulldozers, backhoes, and dump trucks. And that's still a huge part of its business to be sure. Largely overlooked, though, is that Caterpillar also manufactures high-capacity mobile diesel and gas generators, battery-based energy storage systems, and more, all of which are proving to be much-needed stopgap solutions while data center owners and operators are waiting on more permanent equipment. Outfits including Space Exploration Technologies and Microsoft (through Nscale) are utilizing off-grid generators to power some of their AI data centers.
To this end, while all of Caterpillar's business lines grew last year, its power generation arm, which provides these generators, experienced company-leading growth of roughly 30%. The company expects this business to double between 2025 and 2030, and S&P Global doesn't exactly disagree with this outlook. It's looking for Caterpillar's power and energy division to grow another 17% this year -- from last year's revenue of $33.4 billion -- en route to $54.8 billion in annual revenue by 2030.

Jensen Huang Says AI Needs "1,000 Times More Power Than We Currently Have." These 3 Industrial Stocks Will Deliver It.

Looking at the universe of stocks we cover at Dividend Channel, in trading on Wednesday, shares of Goldman Sachs Group Inc (Symbol: GS) were yielding above the 2% mark based on its quarterly dividend (annualized to $20), with the stock changing hands as low as $981.33 on the day. Dividends are particularly important for investors to consider, because historically speaking dividends have provided a considerable share of the stock market's total return. To illustrate, suppose for example you purchased shares of the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) back on 12/31/1999 — you would have paid $146.88 per share. Fast forward to 12/31/2012 and each share was worth $142.41 on that date, a decrease of $4.67/share over all those years. But now consider that you collected a whopping $25.98 per share in dividends over the same period, for a positive total return of 23.36%. Even with dividends reinvested, that only amounts to an average annual total return of about 1.6%; so by comparison collecting a yield above 2% would appear considerably attractive if that yield is sustainable. U.S. stocks fell sharply in midday trading Wednesday as geopolitical tensions reignited and investors positioned ahead of the Federal Reserve's 2:00 p.m. ET policy decision. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) is down 1.7% at mid-day, led lower by Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) dropping 7.3% and Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) falling 4.6% on macroeconomic concerns. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has shed 1%, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) is down by 1.3%.

All three indexes opened in the red, made a half-hearted attempt at stabilization around 11 a.m. ET, then gave up and slid lower again.
Geopolitical chaos meets central bank uncertainty
The immediate trigger for today's selling? Oil prices rocketing more than 6%.
President Donald Trump told Fox News the U.S. would give Iran "a beating" following an overnight missile attack on American forces. That was the end of last Friday's diplomatic progress. You know the ripple effects that follow when oil prices are on the move. Every company depends on energy in some way, so high oil prices quickly get expensive for retailers, tech giants, and manufacturers.
Then there's the Fed. At 2:00 p.m., Chairman Kevin Warsh will announce the latest policy decision, and futures markets are pricing in a nearly 70% chance that rates stay put in the current 3.5% to 3.75% range. But the real drama will come during Warsh's press conference, where traders will parse every word for hints on whether the Fed is sticking with "higher-for-longer" or if recent oil price swings and stubborn inflation readings are raising fresh concerns.
Semiconductor stocks bore the brunt of the technology sector sell-off. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ: SOXX) plunged 4.4%, extending a 10% weekly decline. Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) dropped 5.7%, and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) fell 5.8%. They didn't do anything wrong, other than being richly valued growth stocks on a de-risking kind of market day.
And it's earnings season. Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) beat analyst estimates and Boeing (NYSE: BA) posted a mixed report. Both stocks fell, erasing a combined 109 points from the Dow.
What's next?
The market drama won't stop here. Two Magnificent 7 companies are reporting earnings tonight, and another two tomorrow. Besides their financials, whatever they say about data center plans and AI investments will surely move the markets for the rest of this week.
Sometimes the market throws multiple curveballs at once. The daily drama may open some opportunities and close others, so there's nothing wrong with tracking the headlines. Still, the best strategy is to stay focused on the predictable value of long-term fundamentals.

Market Indexes Tumble on Geopolitical Tensions and Chip Stock Selloff

Roughly seven weeks ago, on June 12, Elon Musk's trillion-dollar artificial intelligence (AI) and space economy goliath, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) (NASDAQ: SPCX), etched its name in Wall Street lore. The $85.7 billion raised from its initial public offering (IPO) nearly tripled the previous recordholder.
When SpaceX went public, it had an astonishing 21 underwriters, with Goldman Sachs leading the way. Given that underwriters typically purchase shares of the companies they bring public, it's common for these financial institutions to bestow buy ratings and lofty price targets on these businesses.

Spanning seven weeks, 38 Wall Street analysts have weighed in on SpaceX. Unsurprisingly, 30 of these analysts have rated it a buy, with an additional seven chiming in with a hold-equivalent rating. But with SpaceX trading 15% below its IPO price and nearly 50% off its all-time high (as of July 24), these 37 analysts have, thus far, been wrong.
Only one Wall Street analyst has hit the nail on the head with SpaceX: CFRA Research's Keith Snyder.
"Hope is not an investment strategy"
Shortly after Musk's company debuted, Snyder issued a sell rating and a (now prescient) $115 price target. While Snyder acknowledged in a CNBC interview that he'd like to see SpaceX succeed, he firmly proclaimed that "hope is not an investment strategy."

Specifically, CFRA's senior research analyst notes that the fundamental outlook for SpaceX doesn't match where Wall Street and retail investors were valuing the company. Snyder questioned how SpaceX arrived at its $28.5 trillion total addressable market, and he highlighted several potential speed bumps for the company, including space-based data centers and the evolution of Starship.
The SpaceX prospectus backs up this skepticism. Despite several years of positive adjusted EBITDA, Musk's company isn't yet generating recurring profits. This is a highly capital-intensive business that's prone to delays, which hasn't yet proved it's sustainable.
"Musk isn't infallible"
However, the strongest argument Snyder makes against owning SpaceX stock is something that Wall Street analysts rarely tackle. In response to CNBC host Brian Sullivan's statement that investors are buying SpaceX because of the prior success of Musk in proving doubters wrong, Snyder retorted:
Musk has done incredible things. But, he's not infallible. They have a lot on their plate right now, and they have a lot of different moving parts that all are required to make this success story a reality. And they all have to go right.
Acknowledging that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk isn't perfect is something we rarely see, but it's central to the thesis of skeptics.
For example, Musk has been promising Level 5 full self-driving for Tesla's electric vehicles annually for over a decade, but this has never come to fruition. Likewise, he promised 1 million robotaxis on public roads by the end of 2020, which also failed to materialize. Musk frequently makes bold claims that end up baked into his public companies' share prices, but these visions rarely go as planned.
Put plainly, SpaceX is a "show-me stock" that's being valued as if it's proven itself for the last decade. Among a veritable sea of bulls, CFRA's Keith Snyder is the only analyst who's been right about SpaceX.

In early trading on Tuesday, shares of Honeywell International topped the list of the day's best performing Dow Jones Industrial Average components, trading up 7.5%. Year to date, Honeywell International registers a 42.2% gain.
And the worst performing Dow component thus far on the day is Caterpillar, trading down 4.7%. Caterpillar is showing a gain of 45.3% looking at the year to date performance.

Even with Caterpillar, industrials aren't the heaviest-weighted sector in the Dow.
GE Vernova equipment is in high demand for data center applications.
GE Vernova would need to issue a stock split to be considered for the Dow.
International Business Machines had its worst day in its history on July 14. So you may think that the blue chip dividend stock would drag down the Dow Jones Industrial Average, but that didn't happen. IBM has only a 2.3% weighting in the Dow, so its losses were more than offset by fellow Dow component Goldman Sachs, which has a 12.4% weighting and gained 9% that day.
This is just one of many examples when a Dow heavyweight has carried drastic underperformance from lower-weighted components. Ten of the Dow's 30 components are down year to date, but the Dow is up nearly 8% thanks to the overperformance of its top three heaviest weighted components. Goldman Sachs has the top weighting in the Dow and is up 23%, followed by Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT), which has a 10.3% weighting and is up 56%; and UnitedHealth Group, which has a 4.9% weighting and is up 30% on the year.

The price-weighted Dow index can become unbalanced if a handful of stocks surge in price without issuing stock splits. Goldman Sachs is up 190% in the last five years, and Caterpillar has done even better, jumping 330%. Combined, these two stocks make up over 22% of the Dow.
Right now, the industrials sector has the second-highest overall weighting in the Dow, representing 19% of the index. I believe there's an industrial stock that would be an ideal component to join the Dow, but it would need Caterpillar to issue a stock split first to balance the index's industrial sector weighting. That stock is GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) -- let's see if it's a good buy now.
A Caterpillar split could open the door for GE Vernova
GE Vernova has some history in the Dow. It was created by the 2023 split of General Electric, which was divided into GE Vernova, GE Healthcare Technologies, and GE Aerospace. GE was one of the original members of the Dow when it was founded in 1896, but was removed in 2018.
The three independent companies have collectively produced incredible gains for investors who held the original stock. GE Vernova is up a mind-numbing 700% since its spinoff and 533% in the last two years. The rapid rise has pole-vaulted its market cap to $282 billion -- making it the third most valuable U.S. industrial company behind Caterpillar and GE Aerospace.
But Caterpillar would likely need to split its stock to make room for GE Vernova so the industrial sector isn't overweighted in the index. Caterpillar has issued stock splits in the past; its most recent split came in 2005.
And which company would be removed from the index to make room for GE Vernova? A very logical seat change could be dropping Nike, given that the athletic wear company is hovering near a 12-year low and its turnaround is taking far longer than expected. Nike has the smallest weighting in the Dow, making up only 0.48% of the index.
GE Vernova is a candidate to split its stock as well
At just over $1,000 per share at the time of this writing, GE Vernova would need to issue a stock split of its own before being added to the Dow.
If Caterpillar issued a stock split and GE Vernova replaced Nike at its current price, the Dow's industrial sector weighting would increase even more, and GE Vernova would instantly become one of the most heavily weighted components alongside Goldman Sachs. The Dow typically adds stocks only if they are priced closer to the index's median weighting or have recently split their own shares, to avoid tilting the index's balance.
For example, Alphabet issued a 20-for-1 stock split in 2022 and was added to the Dow in June of this year. If GE Vernova issued a 4-for-1 split, it would be priced right around the median of the Dow components.
This hypergrowth industrial stock deserves a seat in the Dow
Given its industry-leading role in supplying industrial machinery, such as heavy-duty gas turbines, for AI data centers, GE Vernova stands out as a logical choice for adding another industrial component to the Dow.
Despite its massive run-up in recent years, GE Vernova fetches a surprisingly reasonable 30.8 price-to-earnings ratio because its earnings growth has kept up with its stock price appreciation. However, analyst consensus estimates have GE Vernova earning $30.64 in 2026 earnings per share (EPS) but just $24.48 in 2027 EPS.
Investors who believe we are still in the early innings of the AI infrastructure build-out may still want to buy GE Vernova, but it's worth noting that cyclical stocks can look cheap when their trailing earnings are in an expansion cycle, and then far more expensive as earnings compress during downturns. GE Vernova could pull back just as quickly as it ran up if there's a spending slowdown, making the stock ideally suited for risk-tolerant investors willing to endure volatility.

This Industrial Stock Is Up 533% in 2 Years. I Predict It Will Join the Dow if Caterpillar Issues a Stock Split.

The spreads between crude oil prices and prices of refined petroleum products are at a record high.
Even if crude prices come back down, the shortage of refining capacity will keep refiners' margins elevated.
The energy industry, broadly speaking, has benefited from the higher oil prices this year resulting from Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Yet one energy subsector has significantly outperformed both the energy sector and the broader market.

I'm talking about refiners. As measured by the VanEck Oil Refiners ETF (NYSEMKT: CRAK), refiner stocks are up about 24% since the start of the U.S.-Iran war. That's much better than the overall energy sector, as measured by the State Street Energy Select Sector ETF, up 9% over that period, and the S&P 500 index, up about 7.5%.
Digging down to individual companies, some of the biggest refiners have seen much larger gains.
Marathon Petroleum (NYSE: MPC) is up 59% since the war began, Valero Energy (NYSE: VLO) has climbed 52%, and Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX) is up 36%.
So, what's going on that has driven refiner stocks so much higher than other energy stocks in recent months?
Basically, it's all about crack spreads. Those reflect the difference between the price of crude oil that refiners buy on global markets and the price they can charge for the refined products they extract from it, such as gasoline, diesel, or heating oil. That difference is also essentially the refiner's profit margin.
The most common industry benchmark is the 3-2-1 crack spread, the spread obtained by converting three barrels of crude oil into two barrels of gasoline and one barrel of a distillate, such as diesel or heating oil.
So while many people believe the price of gasoline and other products moves exactly in tandem with the price of crude, in fact, there's a difference because of the refining process. When there's a shortage of refining capacity, the price of products like gasoline and jet fuel will rise and deliver bigger profit margins to refiners.
That's the case today.
A global refining capacity shortage
Due to wars in Ukraine and the Persian Gulf and the resulting destruction of refining infrastructure, as well as pandemic-era closures and aging infrastructure, global refining utilization was about 78 million barrels a day during the second quarter. That's 5 million barrels below the same period a year ago.
That's created a bottleneck that's driven the 3-2-1 crack spread for U.S. refiners to about $64, a new high.
Even if the two conflicts end tomorrow, it will take much longer to get refining capacity back where it needs to be to meet global demand for petroleum products.
That has generated considerable optimism about refining stocks. This week, Goldman Sachs raised its price target for Valero from $286 to $357, suggesting a 14% upside from the current price.
While I wouldn't put a lot of money into oil companies, as the price of oil remains highly volatile due to the twists and turns of the Persian Gulf conflict, I would invest in refiners. The global refining shortage driving their margins higher will last a lot longer.
