Investors may be taking a fresh look at General Motors GM) and Ford Motor’s F) stock after their stronger-than-expected Q1 earnings and upgraded guidance.
GM topped Wall Street’s EPS expectations yesterday evening, and Ford followed suit with its own earnings beat after-market hours on Wednesday.
Both automakers delivered earnings beats that signaled stronger profitability, healthier margins, and early traction in their efforts to balance EV investments with resilient combustion-engine demand.
Tariff Refunds Boost GM & Ford’s Q1 Results
Despite higher EV-related costs and modest revenue softness, GM’s operational performance, strategic positioning, and digital services drove a standout quarter. Impressively exceeding earnings expectations, GM’s Q1 EPS came in at $3.70, nearly 42% above estimates of $2.61 and spiking from $2.78 per share in the prior year quarter.
GM’s outperformance was attributed to a $500 million tariff-related benefit from a Supreme Court decision, and strong North American performance, including leadership in full-size pickup sales. Other highlights included growing digital services, with OnStar and Super Cruise subscriber growth accelerating during the quarter.
This was despite Q1 sales of $43.62 billion slightly missing expectations of $43.93 billion and dipping from $44.02 billion a year ago. Still, GM reported that its adjusted EBIT increased 22% YoY to $4.25 billion, reflecting improved margins and operational discipline.

As for Ford, Q1 EPS of $0.66 crushed expectations of $0.20 by 230% and climbed from $0.14 a share in the prior year quarter. This came as Q1 sales rose 6% to $39.81 billion and edged estimates of $39.34 billion. Most intriguing, Ford’s adjusted EBIT more than tripled to $3.5 billion.
Ford also highlighted a $1.3 billion tariff refund. While the refund has not yet been received, the company stated it will help offset rising commodity costs, especially for aluminum.

GM & Ford’s Raised Guidance
GM raised its FY26 EPS guidance range to $11.50-$13.50 and increased its adjusted EBIT outlook to a range of $13.5-$15.5 billion. These figures were up from prior EPS and EBIT guidance of $11.00-$13.00 and $13-$15 billion.
Meanwhile, Ford raised its adjusted EBIT guidance to a range of $8.5-$10.5 billion from $8-$10 billion.
Bottom Line
A combination of earnings beats, higher guidance, tariff relief, and expanding margins may start to give analysts confidence that GM and Ford can outperform in an increasingly competitive auto market.
For now, GM and Ford stock both land a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). That said, buy ratings could be on the way, given that EPS revisions are likely to trend higher and these auto giants remain attractively valued at less than 10X forward earnings, respectively.

Retail investor buzz surrounding the SpaceX IPO is off the charts -- and rightfully so, with the space economy and artificial intelligence representing some of the largest long-term addressable opportunities.

The hype surrounding SpaceX is palpable – so much so that up to 30% of the company's shares may be set aside for retail investors. Most IPOs portion 5% to 10% of shares for everyday investors.
It's easy to be excited when several of SpaceX's puzzle pieces are growing at a breakneck pace. Space infrastructure and artificial intelligence are two of the largest addressable opportunities over the coming decade. When Musk's company files its registration statement (S-1), we'll get a true feel for just how fast SpaceX is growing.
Retail investors have a terrible habit of being overzealous with Wall Street's largest IPOs
But while SpaceX is drumming up plenty of interest for its historic debut, it's likely also luring potentially millions of retail investors into a costly mistake.
The $75 billion (or more) that SpaceX aims to raise from its IPO would be the most in history by a long shot. The current largest IPO recordholder is Saudi Aramco, which raised $29.4 billion from its overseas debut in December 2019.
In terms of capital raises, U.S. investors have witnessed a handful of big-time debuts since 1999, including Facebook (now Meta Platforms), Alibaba Group, Visa, General Motors, and United Parcel Service. With the exception of China's largest e-commerce and cloud infrastructure services platform, Alibaba, these other businesses are household names, and they generated a mountain of retail investor buzz before their respective IPOs.
Something else most of these companies have in common is that they sputtered out of the gate. Although Visa rallied 23% in the six months following its public debut, Meta, Alibaba, General Motors, UPS, and even Saudi Aramco, tumbled by 38%, 9%, 8%, 11%, and 15%, respectively, in the six months following their IPOs.
History has shown that investors have a terrible habit of being overzealous with brand-name IPOs, and there's a high probability this will be the case with SpaceX.

Putting aside the well-known long-term growth prospects for the space economy and AI, SpaceX is trading at a triple-digit (and likely unsustainable) price-to-sales ratio, based on a January Reuters report that the company generated $15 billion to $16 billion in sales last year.
History also tells us that every game-changing technology and trend endures an early stage bubble-bursting event. If the space economy and AI follow the same pattern other next-big-thing trends have for more than three decades, SpaceX's valuation premium would be hard to justify.

GM Q1 2026 Earnings Call Transcript

Pre-markets are somewhat reversed this morning: after closing yesterday with the Dow closing in the red slightly and the Nasdaq and S&P 500 in the green, at this hour the Dow is up but the Nasdaq, S&P 500 and small-cap Russell 2000 are down. Oil prices are up again at this hour, sending futures off their early-morning highs.
The Strait of Hormuz remains closed at this hour, likely to remain so, as the latest proposal to open the major shipping channel appears to not find favor with the Trump administration. The war in Iran has already gone on weeks longer than originally anticipated, with no realistic end in sight at this time.
A Wall Street Journal article this morning on OpenAI having missed its quarterly targets is especially hitting the tech-heavy Nasdaq harder, sending the index down -319 points, -1.16%. The S&P 500 and the Russell 2000 are both -0.60% currently, while the blue-chip Dow is up +58 points, +0.12% at this hour.
Case-Shiller Home Prices Slowed in February
Scoring one for lower inflation metrics (albeit in the rearview mirror), the Case-Shiller Home Price Index for February came in at +0.9% on the 20-city composite, down 30 basis points (bps) month over month. Higher mortgage rates for the month put downward pressure on pricing, and real home price returns have now been negative (rising slower than the rate of inflation) for now nine-straight months.
The top-performing cities were once again Chicago (+5.0%) and New York (4.7%), followed by Cleveland (+4.2%). Denver was the weakest market for the month, -2.2%, after several months of Tampa being the weakest market for home price growth. Los Angeles and Washington DC were also lower for the month.
Q1 Earnings at a Glance: BP, GM, KO & More
BP BP shares are up following Q1 results that doubled earnings for the oil supermajor, a direct result of the war in Iran. Earnings of $1.24 per share outpaced the $0.91 in the Zacks consensus, leading to a +36.26% earnings surprise.
General Motors GM had an even better quarter on its bottom line: earnings of $3.70 per share zoomed ahead of the $2.61 consensus by +41.76%. A $500 million tariff refund has bolstered the U.S.’s top automaker, but shares are down -1.23% at this hour ahead of the open.
Coca-Cola KO shares are up +3.45% currently, after outperforming expectations on its bottom line by a solid nickel: 86 cents peer share versus 81 in the Zacks consensus, with the company’s strongest sales growth in nearly two years.
UPS UPS delivered a modest 3-cent earnings beat this morning to $1.07 per share, for a +2.88% earnings surprise. Yet declining volume domestically is weighing on the stock, which is -6% at this hour in pre-market trading.
Spotify SPOT surpassed earnings estimates this morning — $4.04 per share versus $3.72 anticipated — but shares are falling -11% ahead of the opening bell after missing full-year guidance, deepening from its -14% selloff year to date.

Pre-Markets Down on Oil Prices, Q1 Earnings Results

(RTTNews) - Automajor General Motors on Tuesday trimmed fiscal 2026 outlook for reported earnings, but lifted forecast for adjusted earnings to reflect tariffs impact, after reporting weak results in its first quarter .
On the NYSE, General Motors shares are currently trading 0.10 percent lower, at $77.89.
Looking ahead for fiscal 2026, net income attributable to stockholders is now expected to be $9.9 billion to $11.4 billion, lower than previous guidance of $10.3 billion to $11.7 billion. Earnings per share is now projected in a range of $10.62 to $12.62, revised from prior guidance range of $11.00 to $13.00.
Further, the firm now expects adjusted earnings per share in a range of $11.50 to $13.50, higher than prior guidance range of $11.00 to $13.00.
EBIT -adjusted is now guided in a range of $13.5 billion to $15.5 billion, updated from prior guidance range of $13.0 billion to $15.0 billion.
The company attributed the revision in EBIT adjusted guidance to a favorable adjustment of around $0.5 billion resulting from the U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding certain U.S. tariffs that were paid under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
The company now expects gross tariff costs of $2.5 billion to $3.5 billion in 2026, down from the original estimate of $3.0 billion to $4.0 billion.
Further, GM announced that its Board has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.18 per share, payable June 18, to holders of the company's common stock at the close of trading on June 5.
In the first quarter, net income attributable to stockholders declined 5.7 percent to $2.63 billion from $2.78 billion last year. Net income attributable to common stockholders were $2.61 billion, down from $3.36 billion a year ago.
Earnings per share were $2.82, 15.9 percent lower than $3.35 a year ago.
Adjusted earnings were $3.430 billion or $3.70 per share, compared to $2.78 per share last year.
EBIT-adjusted increased 21.9 percent to $4.25 billion from $3.49 billion in the prior year. EBIT-adjusted margin improced to 9.7% from 7.9% a year earlier.
Total net sales and revenue, meanwhile, declined 0.9% to $43.62 billion from $44.02 billion a year ago.
Automotive net sales edged down to $39.35 billion from $39.86 billion last year. However, GM Financial revenues grew to $4.28 billion from prior year's $4.16 billion.

GM Q1 Results Down, Cuts FY26 Reported Earnings View, Lifts Adj. EPS Outlook

General Motors (GM) came out with quarterly earnings of $3.7 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.61 per share. This compares to earnings of $2.78 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.
This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of +41.81%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this an automotive manufacturer would post earnings of $2.27 per share when it actually produced earnings of $2.51, delivering a surprise of +10.57%.
Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates four times.
General Motors, which belongs to the Zacks Automotive - Domestic industry, posted revenues of $43.62 billion for the quarter ended March 2026, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.72%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $44.02 billion. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates two times over the last four quarters.
The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.
