Here are three reasons why.
1. GM is competitive in returning value to shareholders
General Motors is often compared to Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F), and rightfully so as the two have very comparable strategies and results. However, one narrative that tends to need adjusting is that Ford returns much more value to its shareholders. Investors likely think this because of Ford's lucrative dividend yields over 5% and it often dishes out an annual supplemental dividend. Ford should be lauded for its dividend.
However, investors often overlook just how much value GM returns to shareholders via share buybacks. In fact, GM has announced $16 billion in share buybacks since 2023 alone and significantly reduced its shares outstanding.
Another way to look at the value GM returns to shareholders is through total yield, which includes not only the dividend yield but includes the impact of share buybacks. While GM's dividend yield is a modest 0.9%, its total yield jumps to 14.93%. That compares favorably to Ford's 4.9% dividend yield and 6.6% total yield.
General Motors is returning massive value to shareholders, and it's time investors made a note of it.
2. GM is managing the troubles that all automakers are seeing in China
General Motors isn't alone in its China pain, as the country is embroiled in a brutal price war rooted deep in its electric vehicle (EV) industry. With the light-vehicle market increasingly moving toward electric, and with many competitive young EV domestic companies, foreign automakers struggled to maintain market share and profits.
This led to General Motors restructuring its entire China business in a move that cost the company more than $5 billion. Late in the fourth quarter of 2024, the automaker noted it would take a noncash charge of $2.7 billion for the restructuring and $2.6 billion to $2.9 billion to account for the decreased value of an equity stake in a 50-50 joint venture with China's SAIC Motor Corp.
The good news is that the restructuring is paying off. General Motors and its joint ventures in China delivered a 10% year-over-year sales increase during the third quarter, and it marked the third consecutive quarter of growth. General Motors has returned to profitability in China and, more importantly, expects to be profitable for the full year and going forward.
3. GM is seeing success across its vehicle lineup
What's really driving GM's current success is strong demand for its vehicles across the entire lineup. General Motors' third-quarter vehicle sales were up 8% compared to the prior year, and sales through the first three quarters were up a higher 10% to 2.2 million vehicles, the best pace in a decade.
GMC is on pace for its best year ever. Chevrolet Trax was the No. 1 in the small SUV segment during the third quarter, and Buick was the fastest-growing mainstream brand calendar year to date. Cadillac recorded its best third quarter and calendar year-to-date sales since 2013, and GM Envolve, the company's fleet business, reported a 20% increase in third-quarter sales thanks to demand for its OnStar Services.
The strength in GM's full product portfolio powered its results during the third quarter when the automaker reported operating profit of $3.1 billion on revenue of $48.6 billion, which easily topped analysts' estimates and enabled management to raise full-year guidance.
What it all means
General Motors is doing a lot of things right these days, and is a far better business and company than it was two decades ago. The market hasn't realized it yet and has yet to reward the company with a proper valuation -- it currently trades at a paltry 10 times price-to-earnings -- and that's partly why the company repurchased so much of its stock. GM is buying its shares, and it's probably time investors started considering the same.

(RTTNews) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has expanded its probe into 286,000 General Motors vehicles in the U.S. over a possible engine failure issue.
The safety regulator said that it has expanded the investigation after receiving several complaints. The NHTSA said the issue stems from engine bearing failures in GM's L87 6.2-litre engine installed in models such as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Cadillac Escalade.
The regulator opened a preliminary investigation into the issues in January, which led to a recall in April.
The NHTSA on Monday upgraded the probe to an engineering analysis on the basis of 1,157 reports of engine bearing failure.
The regulator will also assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope.

Ferrari's luxury business model
Ferrari designs and builds ultra-premium sports cars, but its economics have more in common with Hermès than with Toyota. Every aspect of the business is engineered for scarcity, exclusivity, and customization.
In 2024, Ferrari delivered 13,752 cars -- a tiny fraction of the output of mainstream manufacturers -- yet generated 6.677 billion euros in revenue. That year, the growth in sales volume was just 89 cars, but revenue improved by €707 million, a feat that almost no car companies can achieve.
Those figures place Ferrari in a different league. Its margins rival luxury fashion houses and far exceed peers in the auto sector, where high costs and price competition typically cap profits in the single digits. According to Macrotrends, Ferrari's gross margin reached about 50% in 2024, roughly five times that of General Motors.
Scarcity -- the engine behind Ferrari's economics
Ferrari's defining choice is to stay small. The company's founder, Enzo Ferrari, famously insisted on producing "one car less than the market demands." Management still follows that mantra today. By capping production, Ferrari preserves rarity, drives waiting lists, and strengthens resale values -- a feedback loop that reinforces the brand's mystique.
What's special about Ferrari's brand isn't recognition -- it's permission. Ferrari can raise prices, restrict access, and still expand demand. This unique effect is the essence of luxury economics: When price increases, desire often rises too.
That brand gravity also lowers risk. Waiting lists extend years into the future, creating pre-sold demand that cushions Ferrari against economic downturns. Even in recessions, ultra-high-net-worth customers tend to remain loyal.

Its first fully electric car will arrive in 2026, and management has said that by the end of 2026, about 60% of sales will be hybrid or electric -- without compromising sound, emotion, or driving experience.

This disciplined growth philosophy also shows up in financial management. Free cash hit €1.0 billion in 2024, even after heavy investment in product development and the new Maranello EV facility.

Tigress Financial Maintains General Motors (GM) Strong Buy Recommendation

It hasn't been a smooth year for most automakers. Companies such as General Motors (NYSE: GM) have had to adjust global strategies to offset U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles and automotive parts, and have had to prepare for a slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) sales in the fourth quarter after the $7,500 federal tax credit was removed at the end of September. Don't tell General Motors to be gloomy, though -- despite the headwinds the company just posted strong third-quarter results that drove its stock 15% higher Tuesday.
By the numbers
Thanks to a strong sales mix heavy on full-size trucks and SUVs, along with rising sales, General Motors delivered a strong third quarter of earnings and cash flow. GM recorded its highest third-quarter market share since 2017 in the U.S. market and its restructured China business once again reached profitability.

Focusing on the numbers, GM reported third-quarter operating profit of $3.1 billion from revenue of $48.6 billion. Those figures easily topped analysts' estimates that were looking for operating profit of $2.7 billion on revenue of $45 billion.
GM also raised its full-year operating profit guidance, with a bigger movement on the lower end of the range. GM now expects operating profit to check in between $12 billion to $13 billion, up from the prior $10 billion to $12.5 billion. While the raised forecast is positive news for investors, keep in mind that it's still a decline from the prior year's nearly $15 billion operating profit result.
One reason for the lower profits was the implementation of tariffs, but there's a little good news on that front as well. GM's estimated tariff impact in 2025 is now expected to be between $3.5 billion to $4.5 billion -- this is where the profit decline came from -- which is at least $500 million better than previously expected.
The road ahead
The road ahead is likely to remain bumpy, especially as automakers grapple with the loss of the $7,500 EV purchase tax credit. Not only did the loss of the credit pull forward demand from the fourth quarter into the third quarter, leaving a lull going forward, but it will also pressure EV profitability. That's a problem for investors that recently became more painfully obvious. GM took $1.6 billion in write-downs related to EV assets -- essentially admitting the investments in EVs won't be churning the level of profitability once anticipated.
Despite all of the noise surrounding the slowing EV market in the U.S., new car sales remained 4% higher through August, compared to the prior year. That's with the average transaction price on a new vehicle (overall) rising to a staggering $50,000 in September.
What it all means
General Motors has proven to investors that the company is incredibly capable of navigating complex problems facing the automotive industry. While tariffs, changing global strategies, the rise of Chinese EV manufacturers, and other headwinds remain, GM is still driving forward due to strong demand for its entire fleet. General Motors remains a top automotive stock trading at a cheap 10 times price to earnings and savvy investors would be wise to keep an eye on its stock going forward.

Why This Top Stock Rocketed 15% Higher Tuesday

(RTTNews) - General Motors (GM) has laid off more than 200 salaried employees on Friday, primarily at its Tech Center in Warren, Michigan, just days after raising its full-year earnings guidance, as per Bloomberg reports.
The report states that impacted workers were notified through Slack that the terminations were due to business conditions, not performance problems. Before making the layoffs, the automaker reportedly examined its white-collar workers to find overlapping roles.
The action demonstrates GM's ongoing emphasis on cost effectiveness despite rising financial forecasts.
GM is currently trading at $65.79, up $7.79 or 13.43 percent on the New York Stock Exchange.
