The Family Dollar segment operates general merchandise retail discount stores that offer consumable merchandise, which comprise food and beverages, tobacco, health and personal care, household chemicals, paper products, hardware and automotive supplies, diapers, batteries, and pet food and supplies; and home products, including housewares, home décor, and giftware, as well as domestics, such as comforters, sheets, and towels. It also provides apparel and accessories merchandise comprising clothing, fashion accessories, and shoes; and seasonal and electronics merchandise that include Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and Valentine's Day merchandise, as well as personal electronics, which comprise pre-paid cellular phones and services, stationery and school supplies, and toys. How Did the Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) climbed 0.5%, or 238.37 points, to close at 46,190.61. Twenty-two components of the 30-stock index ended in positive territory, while eight ended in negative.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 117.44 points, or 0.5%, to close at 22,679.98.
The S&P 500 gained 34.94 points, or 0.5%, to close at 6,664.01. Eight of the 11 broad sectors of the benchmark index closed in the green. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP), the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) and the Financials Select Sector SPDR (XLF) advanced 1.3%, 0.9% and 0.8%, respectively, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) fell 0.5%.
The fear gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) decreased 17.9% to 20.78. A total of 19.6 billion shares were traded on Friday, lower than the last 20-session average of 20.7 billion. Advancers outnumbered decliners by a 2.6-to-1 ratio on the S&P 500.

Trump’s Softened China Tariff Tone Boosts Market Confidence
On Friday, U.S. markets responded positively when Donald Trump indicated that his previously announced plan to impose 100% tariffs on imports from China was “not sustainable”, signaling a possible de-escalation in trade tensions. Markets were recently rattled by fears of a full-blown trade war, especially after China tightened rare-earth export controls and the administration threatened massive new levies.
The remark that a blanket tariff increase would be impractical reassured investors that the disruption to global supply chains and inflationary pressures might ease. As a result, broad market indices ticked higher, investor sentiment improved and the volatility index fell sharply, suggesting risk aversion was retreating. While most sectors drew support from the thawing trade-war fears, companies sensitive to consumer demand particularly gained ground, as lower costs and improved sentiment raised expectations for spending and profitability.

Realty Income stock performance
Unsurprisingly, real estate stocks haven't done well for much of the year. The S&P 500 real estate sector as a whole is up only 4%, thanks to the weak housing market and high interest rates that make borrowing more expensive. But Realty Income has been able to shake off those pressures. The stock is up 11% on the year, and when you calculate the total return of reinvesting dividend payments, the return is more than 15%.
The company recorded $1.41 billion in revenue in the second quarter, up from $1.34 billion a year ago. Income was down, however, thanks to borrowing costs -- the company recorded $196.9 million and $0.22 per share versus $256.8 million and $0.29 per share a year ago.
Realty Income lowered its full-year guidance, with net income now expected to be $1.29 to $1.33 per share, from previous guidance of $1.40 to $1.46 per share.
The case for Realty Income

This is based on an underlying yearly EPS growth rate of 8-10%, bolstered by the elimination of discrete cost items associated with the tariff mitigation, multi-price store conversions, lost distribution capacity and the divestiture of Family Dollar.
For fiscal 2026, EPS is likely to grow by a high-teens percentage, thanks to the timing of some discrete cost benefits. For the third-quarter-to-date, comparable same-store sales (comps) grew 3.8% and DLTR bought back 2.8 million shares for $271 million. Dollar Tree has reaffirmed its third-quarter and fiscal 2025 guidance, issued on Sept. 3.
For fiscal 2025, it continues to project net sales from continuing operations of $19.3-$19.5 billion, supported by comps growth of 4-6%. Adjusted EPS from continuing operations was then projected to be $5.32-$5.72, including the year-to-date share repurchase impacts. For the third quarter of fiscal 2025, Dollar Tree had envisioned adjusted EPS being similar to the third quarter of fiscal 2024. Management cited that the company’s EPS view for the third quarter and the current fiscal year has not been adjusted for gains from third-quarter share repurchases.

Dollar Tree Reaffirms FY25 View, Strategic Initiatives Seem Encouraging

Stocks extended their gains today as trade concerns over China eased slightly after Treasury Secretary Bessent suggested the possibility of a longer China tariff truce, tied explicitly to rare earth materials. Bessent also said that as far as he's aware, President Trump "is a go" on meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month in South Korea.
Stocks are also climbing after dovish Fed comments bolstered expectations for the Fed to cut interest rates at the next FOMC meeting on October 28-29. The 10-year T-note yield fell to a 4-week low of 4.00% today after Boston Fed President Susan Collins said it is prudent for the Fed to cut rates a bit more this year.
The escalation of trade tensions between the US and China, along with the ongoing US government shutdown, has sparked a buying spree in precious metals as a haven, with gold reaching a fresh all-time high today. Also, global bond markets have become the recipients of safe-haven demand from the trade turmoil, as bond yields declined worldwide. The 10-year German bund yield dropped to a 3.25-month low of 2.57% today, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 3.5-week low of 4.00%.
Today's private survey news was supportive of stocks after the Oct Empire manufacturing survey general business conditions index rose +19.4 to 10.7, stronger than expectations of -1.8.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.8% in the week ended October 10, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -2.7% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -1.0%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell -1 bp to 6.42% from 6.43% in the prior week.
Boston Fed President Susan Collins said, "With inflation risks somewhat more contained, but greater risks to employment, it seems prudent to normalize policy a bit further this year to support the labor market."
The shutdown of the US government continues, weighing on market sentiment and delaying key economic reports. The government shutdown means delays in the release of government reports, including the last two weeks of weekly initial unemployment claims, the Aug US trade report, and the Sep payroll report. Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said that it will release the September consumer price report, which was originally scheduled to be released today, on October 24. The White House has warned that if the government shutdown lingers, it would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don't align with President Trump's priorities. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets this week will focus on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season begins. Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 71% of the 24 S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts. Also, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 that provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results are expected to beat analysts' expectations, the highest in a year. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from 6.4% in Q2.
The markets are pricing in a 98% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Overseas stock markets are higher today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +1.04%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.22%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +1.76%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) today are up +2 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -1.9 bp to 4.013%. Dec -T-notes matched Tuesday's 4-week high today, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 4-week low of 3.998%. Dovish comments from Boston Fed President Susan Collins gave T-notes a boost when she said it is prudent for the Fed to cut rates a bit more this year.
Also, falling inflation expectations are supportive of T-notes after the 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 3.25-month low today of 2.293%. T-notes also have support amid concerns about the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
Strength in stocks today is limiting the upside in T-notes. Also, the stronger-than-expected Oct Empire manufacturing index was hawkish for Fed policy and bearish for T-notes.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield dropped to a 3.25-month low of 2.565% and is down -3.9 bp at 2.571%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell to a 2.25-month low of 4.523% and is down -5.2 bp to 4.538%.
Eurozone Aug industrial production fell -1.2% m/m, the biggest decline in 4 months, but better than expectations of -1.6% m/m.
ECB Governing Council member Makhlouf said he's more worried that inflation will come in above the ECB's 2% target than below it.
ECB Governing Council member Dolenc said that the current ECB policy "doesn't stimulate inflationary pressures on one hand, while not hindering economic activity on the other," so he sees no reason to change interest rates this month or in the coming months.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks are climbing today, with ASML Holding NV (ASML) up more than +3% after reporting stronger-than-expected Q3 new orders. Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is up more than +7% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and KLA Corp (KLAC) is up more than +5%. In addition, Lam Research (LRCX), Broadcom (AVGO), Applied Materials (AMAT), and Intel (INTC) are up more than +3%.
Bunge Global SA (BG) is up more than +13% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after it projected full-year adjusted EPS of $7.30 to $7.60 for its combined merger with Viterra.
Papa John's International (PZZA) is up more than +8% after Reuters reported that Apollo Global Management submitted a bid within the last week to take the company private at $64 a share.
Morgan Stanley (MS) is up more than +6% after reporting Q3 FICC sales and trading revenue of $2.17 billion, stronger than the consensus of $2.07 billion.
Bank of America (BAC) is up more than +5% after reporting Q3 net interest income of $15.23 billion, above the consensus of $15.03 billion.
BrightSpring Health (BTSG) is up more than +4% after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the company will replace Veritex Holdings in the S&P SmallCap 600 effective before the opening of trading on Monday, October 20.
Amphenol Corp (APH) is up more than +2% after Bank of America Global Research upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $150.
Dollar Tree (DLTR) is up more than +1% after projecting earnings per share to gain as much as 10% annually over the next three years.

Strength in stocks today is limiting the upside in T-notes. Also, the stronger-than-expected Oct Empire manufacturing index was hawkish for Fed policy and bearish for T-notes.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield dropped to a 3.25-month low of 2.574% and is down -2.8 bp at 2.582%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell to a 2.25-month low of 4.535% and is down -3.7 bp to 4.554%.
Eurozone Aug industrial production fell -1.2% m/m, the biggest decline in 4 months, but better than expectations of -1.6% m/m.
ECB Governing Council member Makhlouf said he's more worried that inflation will come in above the ECB's 2% target than below it.
ECB Governing Council member Dolenc said that the current ECB policy "doesn't stimulate inflationary pressures on one hand, while not hindering economic activity on the other," so he sees no reason to change interest rates this month or in the coming months.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks are climbing today, with ASML Holding NV (ASML) up more than +2% after reporting stronger-than-expected Q3 new orders. Also, Lam Research (LRCX), KLA Corp (KLAC), and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are up more than +2%. In addition, Micron Technology (MU), ON Semiconductor (ON), Broadcom (AVGO), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Intel (INTC) are up more than +1%.
Bunge Global SA (BG) is up more than +10% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after it projected full-year adjusted EPS of $7.30 to $7.60 for its combined merger with Viterra.
Papa John's International (PZZA) is up more than +10% after Reuters reported that Apollo Global Management submitted a bid within the last week to take the company private at $64 a share.
Morgan Stanley (MS) is up more than +6% after reporting Q3 FICC sales and trading revenue of $2.17 billion, stronger than the consensus of $2.07 billion.
Bank of America (BAC) is up more than +4% after reporting Q3 net interest income of $15.23 billion, above the consensus of $15.03 billion.
BrightSpring Health (BTSG) is up more than +4% after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the company will replace Veritex Holdings in the S&P SmallCap 600 effective before the opening of trading on Monday, October 20.
Amphenol Corp (APH) is up more than +3% after Bank of America Global Research upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $150.
Citizens Financial Group (CFG) is up more than +2% after reporting Q3 underlying EPS of $1.05, above the consensus of $1.03.
Dollar Tree (DLTR) is up more than +1% after projecting earnings per share to gain as much as 10% annually over the next three years.
Sable Offshore (SOC) is down more than -15% after the Santa Barbara Superior Court issued a tentative ruling that will deny the firm's claims against the Coastal Commission for issuing cease and desist orders during Sable's repair program on the Las Flores pipeline.
Progressive Corp (PGR) is down more than -8% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q3 net premiums written of $21.38 billion, below the consensus of $21.65 billion.
Ibotta Inc (IBTA) is down more than -7% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $12.
PNC Financial Services Group (PNC) is down more than -3% after forecasting Q4 revenue will be "stable to down 1%" q/q.
Abbott Laboratories (ABT) is down more than -3% after cutting the top end of its 2025 earnings guidance to $5.18 from $5.20.
Hancock Whitney (HWC) is down more than -3% after reporting a Q3 net interest margin of 3.49%, below the consensus of 3.52%.
Roper Technologies (ROP) is down more than -1% after JPMorgan Chase downgraded the stock to underweight from neutral.

Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR) stock has been doing fairly well this year, up 17% entering trading this week, which is better than the S&P 500's gain of 11%. But in recent weeks, Dollar Tree's stock has been in a tailspin, reaching levels it hasn't been at in months. It recently was down about 26% from its high of $118.06.

The sell-off began after its second-quarter results came out
On Sept. 3, Dollar Tree released its second-quarter results for fiscal 2025. That day, the stock would fall by more than 8% and its decline would continue in the following weeks.
Overall, the quarter wasn't a bad one for Dollar Tree. Same-store net sales rose by 6.5% for the period ending Aug. 2 and operating income of $231 million rose by 7% year over year. Investors, however, may have been worried about what lies ahead for the business in upcoming quarters.
On the company'searnings call CEO Michael Creedon did allude to tariff risk ahead.
"The timing of the impacts of tariffs and our mitigation activities played out differently than we originally anticipated, with some of the net positive benefits of our mitigation initiatives coming earlier in Q2 and the tariff impacts shifting to later in the year," he said.
Tariffs have been a big concern for investors this year and while Dollar Tree is planning to mitigate those potential headwinds as best as it can, it could mean that worse results may be on the horizon for the discount retailer. A big test may be looming for the company when it reports results later this year, and investors may be hesitant to hold on to the retail stock given the uncertainty.
Why it may not be all bad news for Dollar Tree investors
Although tariffs may negatively impact Dollar Tree's top and bottom lines, the company is giving itself more of a buffer these days by introducing a greater variety of products that are priced between $3 and $5. While the vast majority of its products still cost consumers less than $2, the expansion into higher-priced items can help it appeal to a wider range of shoppers.
During the quarter, Creedon said that households earning $100,000 or more were a "meaningful portion of our Q2 growth," and that's been part of an emerging trend for Dollar Tree as consumers look for ways to trim their budgets.
Dollar Tree is in a good position where both low-income and high-income shoppers may see a reason to go to its stores. With a solid comparable store growth rate, it's proving that the business may be more resilient than other retailers.
Is Dollar Tree stock a good buy?
The decline in Dollar Tree's stock in recent weeks doesn't put it anywhere near its 52-week low of $60.49, but it does bring its price-to-earnings multiple down to around 17. That's well below where the average S&P 500 stock trades -- a multiple of nearly 26.
Tariffs may be a concern for the company in the short term, but over the long run it's not likely to weigh on the business because policies may change and Dollar Tree will have more time to adapt. The stock's reasonable valuation combined with the company's continued strong results makes it a solid investment to consider today.

In early trading on Friday, shares of Dollar Tree topped the list of the day's best performing components of the S&P 500 index, trading up 3.6%. Year to date, Dollar Tree registers a 23.0% gain.
And the worst performing S&P 500 component thus far on the day is Mosaic, trading down 9.9%. Mosaic is showing a gain of 22.5% looking at the year to date performance.
Two other components making moves today are Humana, trading down 4.0%, and Amcor, trading up 3.1% on the day.
