The end of the Bitcoin treasury company model?
Trump Media is hardly the only Bitcoin treasury company that's in trouble. This year has seen a shakeout of the top digital asset treasury companies. The one that is on everyone's radar, of course, is Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR). The company that famously told investors, "Never sell your Bitcoin," is doing just that, and that has the crypto market spooked.
In the past quarter, Strategy reported a nearly $10 billion paper loss on its Bitcoin holdings. The company acquired its 840,447 BTC at an average price of $75,482, but the current price of Bitcoin is just $63,000. You can't make money doing that.
The bigger problem is that selling can beget more selling, which can beget even more selling. That's the way markets work. Many crypto investors may be afraid to admit it, but if Strategy is ever forced to sell significant amounts of its Bitcoin at one time, it could trigger a historic market meltdown. And that's when the pain really starts, especially if crypto market losses seep into the equity market.
Lessons for crypto investors
There are a few lessons here. The biggest one is that trying to time the crypto market is ultimately futile. Trump Media got into Bitcoin at nearly exactly the point that the world's top cryptocurrency was rocketing to an all-time high of $126,000. At the time, the company's new Bitcoin strategy looked like a stroke of genius.
But, alas, the company was buying Bitcoin at the top. And we all know how that story ends: If you buy at the top and sell at the bottom, you will lose money. Within months, the price of Bitcoin began to decline, and the losses began to mount.
That's why I'm now keeping my eye on all the crypto companies that are making a sudden pivot into artificial intelligence. For example, some Bitcoin mining companies are selling off their Bitcoin and going all-in on AI infrastructure. They are abandoning Bitcoin entirely.
This is doing it all wrong. Trying to move in and out of Bitcoin on a regular basis will force you to miss out on Bitcoin's biggest gains. Far better to buy and hold for the long-term, confident that Bitcoin has always found a way to bounce back from adversity.

On August 10, Trump Media & Technology reported its Q2 earnings. The company generated just $1.7 million in revenue in the quarter, mainly from advertising on the Truth Social platform. What this transaction means for investors
The August 13 sale of Trump Media stock by CFO Phillip Juhan occurred a few days after the company terminated its previously announced proposed business combination with Crypto.com. Instead, Trump Media’s foray into cryptocurrency will be put aside in favor of a planned merger with TAE Technologies, a privately-held fusion energy enterprise. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
However, Juhan’s disposition is an unrelated event, as it was a non-discretionary transaction executed to fulfill tax withholding obligations associated with the vesting of restricted stock units (RSUs). The CFO maintained a sizable 581,749 directly-held shares post-disposal, including unvested RSUs, ensuring continued alignment with shareholder interests.
Trump Media posted Q2 sales of $1.7 million, up from $883,300 in the prior year. Even so, the company’s net loss ballooned to $238.1 million from 2025’s loss of $20 million as the value of its cryptocurrency declined.
Trump Media’s efforts to grow its business have met with setbacks, such as the termination of the partnership with Crypto.com. Its path forward to long-term prosperity now seems entirely dependent on its merger with TAE Technologies.

From his eponymous Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ: DJT) to the "Liberation Day" market aftermath in April 2025, there's no denying that Trump has been able to move the performance of specific stocks and entire markets.
Naturally, savvy traders want to cash in on these market effects. Enter the so-called "Trump Trade," in which investors bought stocks and ETFs that stood to benefit from Trump's stated policies of cutting housing regulations, upping defense spending, and reshoring manufacturing to the U.S.

One of those traders was Ned Davis Research, which assembled a basket of Trump Trade exchange-traded funds (ETFs) it dubbed the "Trump Trade Index." Unfortunately for Ned Davis and other Trump Trade investors, things haven't gone according to plan this year. Here's why not, and whether investors should worry.
A sharp reversal
Early in the year, it looked as though the Trump Trade strategy was paying off in spades.
On March 1, many of the Trump Trade Index's component ETFs were up sharply for the year. The Global X Defense Tech ETF (NYSEMKT: SHLD) was up 15.5%, the Global X Uranium ETF (NYSEMKT: URA) was up 27.2%, and the VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF (NYSEMKT: REMX) was up a jaw-dropping 35.1%.
The success of these funds was even more remarkable, considering the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) had risen only 0.5% during that time.
But as the war in Iran has dragged on and tariffs have remained in force, the Trump Trade Index components have suffered. The index is now down 16% since May, according to Ned Davis Research, and many of its component ETFs are in negative territory for the year, with the Global X Defense Tech ETF down 0.9%, the Global X Uranium ETF down 4.5%, and the VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF down 8.7%.
Even Trump-focused ETFs like the Point Bridge America First ETF (NYSEMKT: MAGA), which is up 10.6% for the year, are lagging the S&P 500, which has gained 11% so far in 2026.
Unintended consequences
Although Trump's policy positions toward the key Trump Trade sectors of homebuilding, defense, and manufacturing haven't changed, his actions have produced unintended consequences that have been problematic for those very sectors.
For example, the tariffs and the Iran war have pushed inflation higher, which has caused interest rates to remain high. High interest rates have slowed down the housing market, which has impacted homebuilding. Meanwhile, overall economic uncertainty has affected the broader economy, and these issues aren't showing signs of going away anytime soon.
Even if a president comes to office planning to boost a particular sector of the economy, those plans don't always come to fruition. The best strategy for long-term wealth building is usually to spread your investments across high-quality businesses across multiple sectors, rather than focusing narrowly on a few industries that might get left in the dust.
Investors who are still pursuing the Trump Trade strategy may want to branch out to other sectors to preserve their nest egg.
