The company operates through two segments, Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) and Client Solutions Group (CSG). The ISG segment provides modern and traditional storage solutions, including all-flash arrays, scale-out file, object platforms, hyper-converged infrastructure, and software-defined storage; and general-purpose and AI-optimized servers. This segment also offers networking products and services comprising wide area network infrastructure, data center and edge networking switches, and cables and optics that help its business customers to transform and modernize their infrastructure, mobilize and enrich end-user experiences, and accelerate business applications and processes; software and peripherals; and consulting, support, and deployment services. The CSG segment provides desktops, workstations, and notebooks; displays, docking stations, keyboards, mice, webcam, and audio devices; and third-party software and peripherals, as well as configuration, support and deployment, and extended warranty services. It is involved in cybersecurity technology-driven security solutions to prevent security breaches, detect malicious activity, respond rapidly when a security breach occurs, and identify emerging threats; originating, collecting, and servicing customer financing arrangements; and the resale of VMware products and services. The company serves enterprises, public institutions, and small and medium-sized businesses through its direct sales channel, value-added resellers, system integrators, distributors, and retailers. The company was formerly known as Denali Holding Inc. and changed its name to Dell Technologies Inc. in August 2016. Dell Technologies Inc. was founded in 1984 and is headquartered in Round Rock, Texas.

Dell booked a record $60.9 billion of AI server orders in its fiscal 2027 second quarter -- more than its total revenue.

Shares of Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) surged as much as 12% on Friday, touching a fresh 52-week high. The hardware giant's stock has more than quintupled from its 52-week low as of this writing.
Much of the latest leg has come since the company posted fiscal 2027 second-quarter results (the quarter ended July 31, 2026) on Sept. 1.

One comparison in that report stands out to me above everything else: Customers ordered $60.9 billion of artificial intelligence (AI) servers during the fiscal second quarter. Dell's total revenue (across servers, storage, and PCs) came in at $47 billion.
Those are two different kinds of numbers, to be sure. An order is a booking, a commitment that becomes revenue only when Dell builds and delivers the machines. Revenue is what the company recognized in the period.
Demand, in other words, is no longer the debate. What the next two years of earnings look like depends on how quickly Dell converts those commitments into delivered servers, and on what the conversion costs.

Demand is outrunning the income statement
The fiscal second quarter itself was exceptional. Not only did revenue climb 58% year over year, reaching a record $47 billion, but non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings per share also tripled to $7.04. Dell recognized a record $16.4 billion of AI server revenue, up 100% year over year. And with $60.9 billion of new orders coming in, it exited the quarter with a record $95 billion backlog.
Dell booked $24.4 billion of AI orders and recognized $16.1 billion of AI server revenue in the fiscal first quarter. In other words, orders more than doubled sequentially while recognized revenue barely budged.
Management now calls for $192 billion of full-year revenue, a $25 billion increase from its previous outlook and 69% above last year. AI server revenue guidance went from $60 billion to $74 billion, and adjusted earnings per share guidance now sits at $25.50, up 148% year over year.
Can Dell build servers fast enough?
Dell has recognized about $16 billion of AI server revenue in each of the last two quarters. I'd argue the limit right now is how fast the company can build and deliver servers, not how many customers want them.
To hit $74 billion for the full year, the second half needs to accelerate to about $41.5 billion of AI server revenue -- nearly $21 billion a quarter. And even at the faster pace, the backlog represents more than a year of AI server revenue before any new orders.
The margin worry, at least, eased this quarter. Dell's infrastructure segment revenue soared 89% year over year to $31.8 billion, and the segment's operating margin came in at 15%, expanding from the fiscal first quarter's 10.5% and from 8.8% a year earlier, helped by what Dell calls disciplined pricing. That expansion came despite what the company describes as substantial inflation in memory component costs.
The cash hasn't caught up yet
However, all of that growth is consuming cash first. Operating cash flow slipped to $2.2 billion, from $2.5 billion a year earlier, even as net income more than tripled to $4.1 billion. Inventories have doubled since the end of January to $21.3 billion as Dell stockpiles components and builds against its backlog. And financing receivables (money Dell's in-house financing arm lends customers to pay for their purchases) climbed to $20.4 billion from $14.3 billion over the same stretch. Dell's adjusted free cash flow, which adds that lending back, did come in at $8.1 billion, up 224% year over year.
Dell also priced a $5 billion senior notes offering this week, partly to repay notes coming due this year. Sure, funding a build-out of this size takes working capital, and Dell can borrow at reasonable rates. But reported earnings are running well ahead of collected cash for now -- and the next two years of profits depend on those orders turning into delivered, paid-for systems on schedule.
Where does that leave the stock? Shares trade around $562 as of this writing -- about 33 times the company's earnings over the past 12 months, but about 22 times the adjusted earnings per share now guided for this fiscal year. For a company guiding for nearly 70% revenue growth, that price-to-earnings multiple is arguably fair, as long as the conversion stays on schedule.
Ultimately, I wouldn't chase the stock after Friday's surge. For investors who already own shares, I think the backlog is a good reason to keep holding.
And if operating cash flow starts catching up with those record profits over the next couple of quarters, I'd consider buying, even at a higher price.

Dell Booked More AI Server Orders in 3 Months Than It Recorded in Total Revenue

S&P Global (NYSE: SPGI) announced that Nike (NYSE: NKE) will be removed from the S&P 100, effective Sept. 21, as part of its quarterly rebalancing. Honeywell Aerospace, Simon Property Group, and Colgate-Palmolive will also be removed, while Dell Technologies, Palo Alto Networks, Arista Networks, and Sandisk will be added.

Justifying Nike's S&P 100 removal
The S&P 100 isn't the 100 largest S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) components by market cap. Rather, it's a curated sector that represents blue chip companies across stock market sectors and industries with a focus on megacap and large-cap behemoths.
Nike has remained in the index due to its industry leadership, not its size. Nike is now the 213th-highest-weighted company in the S&P 500. It's also the lowest-ranked component in the iShares S&P 500 100 ETF -- which uses the S&P 100 as a benchmark.
Nike's removal makes sense given that its stock price continues to fall and its industry leadership isn't what it used to be. What's more, Dell, Palo Alto, Arista, and Sandisk have all gone up so much that they are all in the top 50 in S&P 500 components by market cap. Nike's industry leadership premium no longer justifies its inclusion in the S&P 100 over companies that are worth several times more and contributing to the S&P 500's gains, whereas Nike has been a drag on the index.
As you can see in the chart, Nike is at its lowest level in more than a decade, with revenue and earnings down in recent years and operating margins plummeting from the low- to mid-high teens pre-pandemic to under 9% today. There's a laundry list of issues at Nike, including supply chain and corporate strategy blunders, slowing growth in China, tariffs, domestic consumer spending pressures, and increased competition from formidable rivals.
Even with these issues, it's important to remember that investors care more about where a company could be headed than where it has been. Investors may take one glance at the stock's price action and assume Nike is a no-brainer buy. But Nike hasn't returned to growth, and its runway for doing so is shrouded in dense uncertainty.
As part of its Win Now turnaround plan, Nike has implemented cost cuts and changed its strategy to better balance wholesale and direct-to-consumer. For fiscal 2026, which ended on May 31, wholesale revenue grew 4% year over year, with double-digit growth in North America. But many of the challenges that weighed on the business remain -- namely, competition, current operating trends in consumer discretionary spending, and the China slowdown.
Better Dow candidates
With Alphabet replacing Verizon Communications in the Dow this past June, Nike is now the lowest-ranked component in the price-weighted index -- putting it on the hot seat for the next stock most likely to be replaced. With just 30 components, the Dow is more exclusive than the S&P 100, Nasdaq-100, or the S&P 500. The Dow has become increasingly tech-stock-focused in recent years to reflect the evolving economy -- adding Nvidia and Amazon in 2024, and now Alphabet this year. However, there are massive companies that could muscle their way into the Dow, such as Broadcom, Meta Platforms, Tesla, Space Exploration Technologies, or maybe even Tesla and SpaceX combined if they merge.
Although the Dow has traditionally included industry-leading dividend-paying companies, the dividend-paying aspect of the criteria seems to carry less weight today than in years past, as Alphabet and Nvidia both yield less than 0.5%, and Amazon doesn't even pay a dividend.
Nike has raised its dividend for 24 consecutive years and yields a sizable 4.3%. But that payout could be under pressure if Nike's dividend expense begins to absorb too much of its free cash flow.
Nike will be removed from the Dow
Nike could be a good buy for investors who are confident in its brands and management's ability to execute a successful turnaround. And if the broader stock market were selling off, perhaps Nike would be given more grace.
But the major indexes, including the S&P 500 and the Dow, are hovering around all-time highs -- shortening the leash for underperforming stocks like Nike, especially now that it is closer to the median S&P 500 component weight and makes up a mere 0.4% of the Dow.
At this point, I think it's only a matter of time before Nike is removed from the storied Dow Jones index. And most investors may be better off waiting for concrete signals of a sustained turnaround before buying the stock.

Nike Is Being Deleted From the S&P 100. Is Its Seat in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in Jeopardy?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Friday rose by +0.86%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) rose by +0.98%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) rose by +0.91%. E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +0.83%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) rose +0.86%.
Stock indexes closed higher, supported by Friday’s -2.4% decline in oil prices. The stock market took Friday’s CPI report largely in stride, even as the 10-year T-note yield closed slightly higher and the odds of a Fed rate hike next week rose to 85%.

Friday’s Aug US CPI report of +0.4% m/m was in line with market expectations, but the core CPI report of +0.3% m/m was slightly stronger than market expectations of +0.2% m/m. On a year-on-year basis, the Aug CPI report of +3.4% y/y was unchanged from July and was in line with market expectations. Meanwhile, the Aug core CPI report of +2.4% y/y eased slightly from July’s +2.5% and posted a new 5.5-year low, and was in line with market expectations.
Friday’s CPI report caused the markets to raise the odds for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at next week’s meeting on September 15-16 to 88% from 75% on Thursday.
Stocks were undercut by Friday’s weaker-than-expected US consumer sentiment report. The University of Michigan’s preliminary Sep US consumer sentiment index fell by -3.9 points to 47.8, weaker than market expectations for a -0.6 point decline to 51.3.
Also on the negative side, the University of Michigan reported that Sep US consumer 1-year inflation expectations rose to +4.6% from +4.0% in August, stronger than expectations of +4.2%. Sep consumer 5-10 year inflation expectations rose to +3.4% from +3.3% in August, and were stronger than market expectations of +3.3%.
The US-Canada trade war continues to weigh on stock market sentiment. On Tuesday, Canada imposed tariffs of 15% to 50% on hundreds of US goods in retaliation for the US action last month to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion of imports from Canada. The US responded by blocking imports of some Canadian products and slapping new tariffs on others, and by seeking to bar Canadian companies from selling to US government contractors.
Oct WTI crude oil prices (CLV26) fell -2.4% on Friday, reversing part of Thursday’s +6.7% surge to a 3.5-month high. Oil prices still rose by a net +9% on the week, but fell on Friday after the International Energy Agency warned that high oil prices and restricted oil supply will cause the biggest drop in global oil demand this year since the Covid-19 pandemic.
There were reports that two ships were struck by unidentified projectiles near Oman on Thursday, presumably by Iran. Also, Axios reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called President Trump twice on Thursday, asking him to launch a new military attack against the Houthis in Yemen, who are gaining control of more territory in Yemen near the critical Bab el-Mandeb Strait and have been striking Saudi oil facilities. Saudi Arabia told OPEC on Thursday that its crude production in August fell to 6.238 million bpd, the lowest since 1990.
Overseas stock markets closed mixed on Friday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.90%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -1.18%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed down -1.91%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ6) fell by -7 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +0.6 bp to 4.969%, following Thursday’s +11 bp surge to a 2.75-year high of 4.963%. T-note prices found support early in the session from lower oil prices but eventually succumbed to the hawkish CPI report and the higher odds of an FOMC rate hike next week. T-note prices had some underlying support as the 10-year breakeven inflation expectations rate fell -4.4 bp to 2.373%, down from Thursday’s 3.25-month high of 2.42%.
European government bond yields were mixed. The 10-year German bund yield today posted a new 24-year high of 3.532% and ended the day up +0.3 bp to 3.504%. The 10-year UK gilt yield edged to a 19-year high of 5.380% but ended the day down -3.1 bp to 5.343%.
Markets are discounting a 78% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at the ECB’s next meeting on October 29. The ECB at this week’s meeting raised its deposit facility rate by 25 bp to 2.50%, as expected, and said inflation will stay above 2% for an "extended period."
US Stock Movers
Oracle (ORCL) rallied +5% in Thursday’s overnight session on positive cloud news but then lost those gains and ended Friday down -1.7%. Oracle said late Thursday that its cloud infrastructure sales rose +121% to $7.4 billion, above the market consensus of $7.2 billion. Oracle’s co-CEO Clay Magouyrk said, “We are delivering data center and GPU capacity at a pace that would have seemed impossible only a year ago.” The company also said it sold more than $30 billion in AI cloud contracts during the latest quarter, higher than expectations. Fiscal-Q1 sales rose +30% and the adjusted EPS report of $1.92 per share was higher than market expectations of $1.75.
Chipmakers rose nearly across the board on Friday, and the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rallied +1.75% on the day. ON Semiconductor (ON) rallied more than +8%. Analog Devices (ADI), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), Arm Holdings (ARM), and Marvell (MRVL) all rallied more than +4%.
The Magnificent Seven all closed higher on Friday except for Nvidia (NVDA), which showed a small loss. Amazon.com, Alphabet (GOOGL), and Apple (AAPL) all rallied by more than +1%. Apple found continued support after releasing its new iPhone Duo earlier this week, its first foldable phone.
Microsoft (MSFT) rallied +0.65% after saying it plans a data center push to triple its computing power since a current shortage is forcing it to turn away new AI and cloud business.
Crypto stocks traded higher on Friday, supported by a +3.1% gain in Ethereum (^ETHUSD) and a +0.2% gain in Bitcoin (^BTCUSD). Mara Holdings (MARA) rallied more than +4%, Riot Platforms rallied more than +2%, and Strategy (MSTR)and Coinbase (COIN) rallied more than 1%.
Adobe (ADBE) closed up +1.4% despite slightly disappointing guidance, fueling concerns that AI will cannibalize software revenue.
Dell Technologies (DELL) rallied nearly +12% after RBC Capital Markets started research coverage with an outperform rating and $640 price target based on expectations for strong AI infrastructure demand.

Today’s Aug US CPI report of +0.4% m/m was in line with market expectations, but the core CPI report of +0.3% m/m was slightly stronger than market expectations of +0.2% m/m. On a year-on-year basis, the Aug CPI report of +3.4% y/y was unchanged from July and was in line with market expectations. Meanwhile, the Aug core CPI report of +2.4% y/y eased slightly from July’s +2.5% and posted a new 5.5-year low, and was in line with market expectations.

The US responded by blocking imports of some Canadian products and slapping new tariffs on others, and by seeking to bar Canadian companies from selling to US government contractors.
Oct WTI crude oil prices (CLV26) are down more than -2% today, giving back part of Thursday’s +6.7% surge to a 3.5-month high. Oil prices are still sharply higher on the week, but fell back today after the International Energy Agency today warned that high oil prices and restricted oil supply will cause the biggest drop in global oil demand this year since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Today’s Aug US CPI report of +0.4% m/m was in line with market expectations, but the core CPI report of +0.3% m/m was slightly stronger than market expectations of +0.2% m/m. On a year-on-year basis, the Aug CPI report of +3.4% y/y was unchanged from July and was in line with market expectations. Meanwhile, the Aug core CPI report of +2.4% y/y eased slightly from July’s +2.5% and posted a new 5.5-year low, and was in line with market expectations.
Today’s CPI report caused the markets to raise the odds for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at next week’s meeting on September 15-16 to 88% from 75% on Thursday.
The US-Canada trade war continues to weigh on stock market sentiment. On Tuesday, Canada imposed tariffs of 15% to 50% on hundreds of US goods in retaliation for the US action last month to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion of imports from Canada. The US responded by blocking imports of some Canadian products and slapping new tariffs on others, as well as seeking to bar Canadian companies from selling to US government contractors.
Oct WTI crude oil prices (CLV26) are down more than -3% today, giving back part of Thursday’s +6.7% surge to a 3.5-month high. Oil prices are still sharply higher on the week, but fell back today after the International Energy Agency today warned that high oil prices and restricted oil supply will cause the biggest drop in global oil demand this year since the Covid-19 pandemic.
There were reports that two ships were struck by unidentified projectiles near Oman on Thursday, presumably by Iran. Also, Axios reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called President Trump twice on Thursday, asking him to launch a new military attack against the Houthis in Yemen, who are gaining control of more territory in Yemen near the critical Bab el-Mandeb Strait and have been striking Saudi oil facilities. Saudi Arabia told OPEC on Thursday that its crude production in August fell to 6.238 million bpd, the lowest since 1990.
Overseas stock markets are mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.81%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -1.18%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed down -1.91%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ6) are up +4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -4.1 bp to 4.922%, following Thursday’s +11 bp surge to a 2.75-year high of 4.963%. T-note prices shook off the CPI report and the higher odds of an FOMC rate hike next week and are trading higher on today’s decline in oil prices. The 10-year break-even inflation expectations rate is down -2.6 bp to 2.390%, falling back from Thursday’s 3.25-month high of 2.42%.
European government bond yields are steady to lower. The 10-year German bund yield today posted a new 24-year high of 3.532% but then backed off and is little changed at 3.502%. The 10-year UK gilt yield edged to a 19-year high of 5.380% but then backed off and is down -4.4 bp at 5.329%.
Markets are discounting a 78% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at the ECB’s next meeting on October 29. The ECB at this week’s meeting raised its deposit facility rate by 25 bp to 2.50%, as expected, and said inflation will stay above 2% for an "extended period."
US Stock Movers
Oracle (ORCL) is up more than +2% after reporting late Thursday that its cloud infrastructure sales rose +121% to $7.4 billion, above the market consensus of $7.2 billion. Oracle’s co-CEO Clay Magouyrk said, “We are delivering data center and GPU capacity at a pace that would have seemed impossible only a year ago.” The company also said it sold more than $30 billion in AI cloud contracts during the latest quarter, higher than expectations. Fiscal-Q1 sales rose +30% and the adjusted EPS report of $1.92 per share was higher than market expectations of $1.75.

The S&P 500 index is already a bit tech-heavy, with over a third of its constituents in the sector, but it's about to see that number pushed higher with four new AI stocks set to be added to the index later this month. Let's take a look at the S&P's newest members and whether investors should buy, hold, or pass on these stocks.
One of the best-performing stocks in the market this year, Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) has been riding the memory supercycle to huge revenue growth and a robust gross margin. The company is a pure-play NAND (flash) memory maker and has benefited from the current supply-demand imbalance in the industry.

NAND supply remains constrained as the big three memory makers continue to put most of their efforts and resources into DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and specifically high bandwidth memory (HBM). At the same time, demand for flash continues to soar from the need for massive solid-state drives (SSDs) that store training data.
Sandisk has started to lock up customers with long-term deals for the first time ever, and AI seems to have potentially brought with it a structural shift where the typical boom-bust cycles are no longer the norm. Trading at a forward P/E of 5, the stock looks like a solid hold, with the NAND cycle looking like it will last longer than most expect.
Palo Alto Networks
After Anthropic's Mythos model revealed extensive previously unknown software vulnerabilities, the importance of cybersecurity in the AI era took center stage. Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ: PANW) is one of the leaders in AI security, and its earlier decision to stop selling point solutions and have customers consolidate on one of its platforms has been paying off.
As a leader in next-generation security, Palo Alto has a bright future. However, the stock is extremely pricey, trading at a forward price-to-sales ratio (P/S) of 19, based on fiscal 2027 (ending September 2027) estimates, while growing its revenue by 34% last quarter. That's just too pricey in my book, and as such, I'd pass.
Dell
AI data centers require more than just AI chips, and Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL) has been benefiting by delivering customers custom end-to-end solutions with ongoing support. Its AI Factory includes everything from hardware -- like servers, networking equipment, power, cooling, storage, and data management infrastructure -- to software and security services. It also includes edge devices like PCs.
The company is seeing surging revenue, up 58% last quarter, and it sees full-year revenue climbing 69%. Traditional servers and networking revenue skyrocketed 122%, while storage was up 26% and client solutions rose 20%. While Dell is a top-tier systems integrator with deep supply-chain scale and high-value enterprise services, it still functions largely as a hardware pass-through, and its 21% gross margin reflects that reality.
An investment in the stock largely comes down to the company continuing to ride the AI infrastructure wave and continuing to benefit from operating leverage as it scales. With the AI boom looking like it still has legs, the stock looks like a buy.
Arista Networks
Arista Networks (NYSE: ANET) is benefiting from AI chip clusters growing in size and complexity and the need to better manage AI networks. The company is a close partner with Broadcom, where it assembles its networking components together and layers on its Extensible Operating System (EOS) software platform so customers can easily manage their networks.
Microsoft and Meta Platforms are two of Arista's largest customers, and it's benefiting from their aggressive spending on AI infrastructure. However, it said it now has hundreds of customers that have adopted its solutions, up from only four or five in 2024. Arista grew its revenue by 38% last quarter and now expects its revenue to climb by 40% this year.
Despite the company's momentum, with the shares trading at a forward P/E of 37, based on 2027 analyst estimates, I'd pass on the stock at this time.
