His plan has the confident energy of a cryptocurrency exchange CEO recommending more cryptocurrency adoption. Funny how that works: When your favorite tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

To be fair, Armstrong's fundamental diagnosis is solid. Treasury Department figures show total public debt hit $39.69 trillion as of July 24. On July 1, when Armstrong posted his analysis, it was $39.39 trillion. If you're keeping score at home, that's roughly $300 billion of new debt in a month, or about $100 billion added every nine days.
Meanwhile, the government is paying real money to service all that borrowing. Interest payments have indeed surpassed the defense budget, as Armstrong notes.
America tried this already (sort of)
Backing the dollar with Bitcoin holdings would essentially revive the gold standard that the U.S. abandoned internationally in 1971. The theory is simple: A fixed-supply backing asset limits money printing, which slows government borrowing.
The gold standard ran into bank panics, deflationary depressions, and the general economic vibe of the 1930s. Economists mostly agree that rigid monetary systems make recessions worse, not better.
Bitcoin adds a unique wrinkle: volatility. The cryptocurrency has experienced drawdowns of more than 70% multiple times in its history. A currency backing that swings wildly in value makes the economy more unstable, not less. That's especially true when a single social media post can move Bitcoin prices.
The math gets weird
There's also a practical question: At what price should Bitcoin back the dollar?
The current Bitcoin market cap of roughly $1.3 trillion wouldn't cover a meaningful fraction of the $31.9 trillion in publicly held debt. For Bitcoin backing to be meaningful rather than decorative, the price needs to rise by an order of magnitude (great news for Coinbase and its shareholders). It might make sense someday, but the math doesn't work in 2026.
The part that's actually interesting
Armstrong's third idea has some historical support. The U.S. didn't pay down its World War II debt through austerity. It grew the economy instead. AI and robotics might generate enough growth to outpace the debt accumulation.
Could AI deliver on that promise? It's the most plausible of Armstrong's three proposals, though "I hope technology saves us someday" isn't exactly a fiscal plan. Then again, it's hard to squeeze a detailed economic analysis into a single X post.
The uncomfortable truth
Governments can solve debt problems through some combination of growth, inflation, spending cuts, and tax increases. Growth is the only option anyone actually likes. Inflation technically helps (debt gets cheaper in real terms), but try telling voters that $5 eggs are good fiscal policy.
Spending cuts and tax increases are always hard to swallow. This explains why the debt keeps growing regardless of which party controls Congress or the White House.
Armstrong is right that the incentive structure is broken. Bitcoin backing wouldn't fix it, though. Asset-backed currency just reshapes the fiscal pain of avoiding the three unpopular methods. When that pain becomes acute enough, countries abandon the standard.
This is, again, exactly what happened with gold. Sorry, Mr. Armstrong. Even if Bitcoin had enough market value to make this work, the fiscal constraint wouldn't last long.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong's Bold Fix for America's $39.7 Trillion Debt Crisis (Hint: It Involves Bitcoin.)

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed up +0.21%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +1.03%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.98%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +0.24%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) fell -0.88%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrials climbing to a 1.5-week high and the Nasdaq 100 falling to a 2.75-month low. Better-than-expected earnings from Boeing, Coca-Cola and Sherwin-Williams were supportive of stocks on Tuesday. Also, software stocks rose as investors rotated into sectors that had recently underperformed.

However, the Nasdaq 100 was under pressure amid a deepening rout in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks, driven by fresh concerns over artificial intelligence spending and rising competition from China. Also, the unexpected decline in US July consumer confidence weighed on market sentiment on Tuesday.
Lower crude oil prices have also eased inflation concerns and pushed bond yields lower, supporting stocks. Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) fell by more than -4% on Tuesday to a 1-week low, as the US and Iran extended their pause in hostilities. The focus is now on talks between Iran and Oman over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The 10-year T-note yield fell -5 bp to 4.60%.
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf. Also, President Trump on Tuesday said that the US would “take out” Pickaxe Mountain, an Iranian facility that the US and Israel said they suspect is a nuclear site, if there wasn’t a deal. In addition, Houthi militants said they would continue striking Saudi Arabia after claiming to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi Arabia’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively shut off by the war.
The US May S&P composite-20 home price index rose +1.6% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.3% y/y and the largest increase in 10 months.
The Conference Board US Jul consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell by -1.4 to 90.8, weaker than expectations of an increase to 92.4.
The US Jul Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +1 to 5, weaker than expectations of 6.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are awaiting results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms on Wednesday, and Amazon.com and Apple on Thursday. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 170 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 30% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the Tue/Wed FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.12%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -1.16%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2-month low and closed down sharply by -3.95%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Tuesday closed up +7.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -4.9 bp to 4.600%. T-notes pushed higher on Tuesday as a -4% plunge in crude oil prices eased inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1-month low of 2.192% on Tuesday. T-notes also rose after US July consumer confidence unexpectedly declined. Solid demand for the Treasury’s $44 billion auction of 7-year T-notes was bullish for T-note prices, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.49, better than the 10-auction average of 2.47.
European government bond yields moved lower on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-week low of 3.103% and finished down -2.9 bp to 3.104%. The 10-year UK gilt yield slid to a 1-week low of 4.944% and finished down -5.2 bp to 4.944%.
The France Jul consumer confidence survey rose +2 to a 4-month high of 86, stronger than expectations of 85.
The markets are discounting an 86% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Software stocks rallied on Tuesday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Workday (WDAY) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and Thomson Reuters (TRI) and Autodesk (ADSK) closed up more than +5%. Also, Adobe (ADBE), ServiceNow (NOW), Salesforce (CRM), and Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +4%, and Intuit (INTU) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) closed up more than +1%.
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks retreated on Tuesday, weighing on the Nasdaq 100. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) dropped to a 2.5-month low and closed down more than -4%. Sandisk (SNDK) closed down more than -14% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Micron Technology (MU) and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed down more than -8%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -7%, and KLA Corp (KLAC) and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -6%. In addition, Intel (INTC) closed down more than -5%, and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed down more than -4%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved lower on Tuesday after Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) fell more than -1% to a 1-week low. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed down more than -9%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) closed down more than -4%. Also, Strategy (MSTR), Riot Platforms (RIOT), and Circle Internet Group (CRCL) closed down more than -2%, and Coinbase Global (COIN) closed down -0.39%.
IQVIA Holdings (IQV) closed up more than +13% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $17.28 billion to $17.48 billion from a previous forecast of $17.15 billion to $17.35 billion, stronger than the consensus of $17.28 billion.
Sherwin-Williams (SHW) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting adjusted EPS of $3.70, better than the consensus of $3.51, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $11.80 to $12.20 from a previous forecast of $11.50 to $11.90, above the consensus of $11.76.
Nucor (NUE) closed up more than +7% after reporting Q2 net sales of $10.40 billion, above the consensus of $10.03 billion.
Coca-Cola (KO) closed up +5% after raising its full-year comparable EPS forecast to +9% to +10% from a previous view of +8% to +9%.
Boeing (BA) closed up more than +4% after reporting Q2 revenue of $24.56 billion, stronger than the consensus of $24.26 billion.
Amkor Technology (AMKR) closed down more than -24% after forecasting Q3 net sales of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.11 billion.
Corning (GLW) closed down more than -12% after forecasting Q3 core sales of $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $5.0 billion.
Noble Corp. (NE) closed down more than -9% after cutting its full-year adjusted Ebitda estimate to $850 million to $925 million from a previous forecast of $940 million to $1.02 billion, below the consensus of $970.3 million.
Carrier Global (CARR) closed down more than -8% after reporting Q2 gross margin of 27.2%, below the consensus of 28.1%.
RXO Inc (RXO) closed down more than -6% after TD Cowen downgraded the stock to sell from hold with a price target of $19.

Stocks Mixed on Earnings Results and Weakness in Chipmakers

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.22%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.68%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -1.50%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) are down -0.29%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) are down -1.56%.
Stock indexes are mixed today, with the Dow Jones Industrials posting a 1.5-week high and the Nasdaq 100 falling to a 2.75-month low. Better-than-expected earnings from Coca-Cola and Sherwin-Williams are supportive of stocks today. However, the Nasdaq 100 is under pressure today amid a deepening rout in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks, driven by fresh concerns over artificial intelligence spending and rising competition from China. Also, losses in stock indexes are limited as investors rotate into other sectors of the market that tend to generate relatively stable revenues regardless of the economic cycle.

Lower crude oil prices have also eased inflation concerns and are pushing bond yields lower, supporting stocks. Sep WTI crude oil prices (CLU26) are down by more than 1% today to a 1-week low, as the US and Iran extended their pause in hostilities. The focus is now on talks between Iran and Oman over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The 10-year T-note yield is down -2 bp to 4.63%
However, tensions remain high in the Middle East as the US maintains its blockade of Iranian oil shipments in the Persian Gulf and President Trump raised the possibility of intensified action against Iran. Also, Houthi militants in Yemen claimed to have struck facilities linked to Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port towns of Jizan and Yanbu on Saturday. Yanbu, the western end of the East-West pipeline, has become Saudi’s key crude export outlet since the Strait of Hormuz has effectively been shut off by the war. Jizan is home to a refinery and export terminal along the Red Sea.
The US May S&P composite-20 home price index rose +1.6% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.3% y/y and the largest increase in 10 months.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which continue this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. The markets are waiting for results from a raft of megacap technology companies this week, including Amazon.com, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2. So far, earnings results have been positive, with 86% of the 135 S&P 500 companies that have reported Q2 earnings beating estimates, according to Bloomberg data.
The markets are discounting a 32% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on Tue/Wed.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.37%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -1.16%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average fell to a 2-month low and closed down sharply by -3.95%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are up +4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -2.2 bp to 4.626%. T-notes are climbing today as a -1% fall in crude oil prices eases inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 1-month low of 2.192% today. Also, short covering ahead of the 2-day FOMC meeting that begins today is supporting T-note prices. Supply pressures are limiting gains in T-notes as the Treasury will auction $44 billion of 7-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-week low of 3.106% and is down -0.4 bp to 3.129%. The 10-year UK gilt yield slid to a 1-week low of 4.945% and is down -2.7 bp to 4.970%.
The France Jul consumer confidence survey rose +2 to a 4-month high of 86, stronger than expectations of 85.
The markets are discounting an 88% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on September 10.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks are falling today, weighing on the broader market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) dropped to a 2.25-month low and is down more than -5%. Western Digital (WDC) is down more than -13% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) is down more than -12%. Also, Micron Technology (MU) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) are down more than -9%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), and Lam Research (LRCX) are down more than -8%. In addition, Applied Materials (AMAT) and Intel (INTC) are down more than -7%, and KLA Corp (KLAC) is down more than -6%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks are moving lower today, with Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) down more than -3% at a 1-week low. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) is down more than -9%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) are down more than -7%. Also, Circle Internet Group (CRCL) is down more than -6%, and Coinbase Global (COIN) and Strategy (MSTR) are down more than -4%.
Software stocks are mostly higher today, a supportive factor for the overall market. Autodesk (ADSK), Thomson Reuters (TRI), and Workday (WDAY) are up more than +4%, and Adobe (ADBE), Intuit (INTU), and Salesforce (CRM) closed up more than +3%. Also, Microsoft (MSFT), ServiceNow (NOW), Atlassian (TEAM), and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) are up more than +1%.
Amkor Technology (AMKR) is down more than -21% after forecasting Q3 net sales of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.11 billion.
Corning (GLW) is down more than -18% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q3 core sales of $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $5.0 billion.
Noble Corp. (NE) is down more than -5% after cutting its full-year adjusted Ebitda estimate to $850 million to $925 million from a previous forecast of $940 million to $1.02 billion, below the consensus of $970.3 million.
RXO Inc (RXO) is down more than -5% after TD Cowen downgraded the stock to sell from hold with a price target of $19.
IQVIA Holdings (IQV) is up more than +14% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $17.28 billion to $17.48 billion from a previous forecast of $17.15 billion to $17.35 billion, stronger than the consensus of $17.28 billion.
Sherwin-Williams (SHW) is up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting adjusted EPS of $3.70, better than the consensus of $3.51, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $11.80 to $12.20 from a previous forecast of $11.50 to $11.90, above the consensus of $11.76.
Coca-Cola (KO) is up more than +6% after raising its full-year comparable EPS forecast to up +9% to +10% from a previous view of +8% to +9%.
Nucor (NUE) is up more than +5% after reporting Q2 net sales of $10.40 billion, above the consensus of $10.03 billion.
Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) is up more than +4% after UBS upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $500.

Stocks Mixed as Weakness in Chipmakers Deepens

Key Points
SpaceX values its total addressable market at $28.5 billion, and it attributes most of that sum to AI products and services.
Wall Street says SpaceX's sales will grow at 102% annually through 2028; that makes the current valuation of 78 times sales tolerable.
Among the 10 largest U.S. IPOs in the past decade, the average stock returned 24% during its first year on the public market.
Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) completed its historic initial public offering (IPO) on Friday, June 12. The rocket and satellite company raised a record $75 billion at an unprecedented market value of $1.7 trillion.
SpaceX stock is down 42% from its post-IPO high, partly because some insiders will be allowed to sell shares two days after the company reports second-quarter financial results on August 4. But a rich valuation, debt issuance, and launch delays have also factored into the decline.

Nevertheless, Wall Street is overwhelmingly bullish. Among 37 analysts, SpaceX has a median target of $225 per share, implying 96% upside from its current share price of $115. My prediction is a little more conservative: I think SpaceX will trade at $167 per share by June 2027.
Here's why.
SpaceX is chasing a $26.5 trillion opportunity in AI products and services
SpaceX is a vertically integrated business that designs hardware and software across three operating segments: space, connectivity, and artificial intelligence. The company has a key competitive advantage in reusable rockets, which dramatically reduce launch costs. That economic moat has helped SpaceX build Starlink, the largest satellite internet service in the world.
SpaceX also runs two Colossus data centers, which collectively form the largest AI training cluster on the planet. Using its low-cost launch capabilities, massive satellite network, and AI expertise, the company plans to provide AI cloud services from orbital (space-based) data centers. Solar power and cold temperatures could solve the energy and cooling problems that limit terrestrial data centers.
"We believe we are the only company with a commercially viable path to building orbital AI compute at scale," SpaceX explains its SEC Form S-1. The company values its addressable market at $28.5 billion, and the vast majority of that sum ($26.5 trillion) is attributed to AI products and services.
Wall Street says SpaceX's revenue will grow at 102% annually through 2028
In the first quarter, SpaceX reported a net loss of $4.2 billion, but the company has plenty of cash on its balance sheet after raising $75 billion from its initial public offering (IPO) and AI revenue is likely to grow quickly in the quarters ahead. Anthropic and Alphabet have agreed to rent cloud capacity from SpaceX for monthly fees of $1.25 billion and $920 million, respectively.
SpaceX brought in revenue of $19.3 billion in the past year, and the company currently has a market value of $1.5 trillion as of July 25. Those figures give SpaceX a price-to-sales ratio of 78. That would be a very rich valuation in almost any circumstance, but it's tolerable here because Wall Street estimates sales will increase at 102% annually through 2028. In other words, SpaceX currently trades at about 11 times projected sales for 2028.
History says SpaceX's stock price will increase 45% by June 2027
SpaceX had a market capitalization of $1.7 trillion at its IPO price of $135 per share. That made it the largest IPO in history by a wide margin. There is no perfect comparison, but we can look at how other large IPOs have performed to make an educated guess about where SpaceX is headed.
The following chart shows the 10 largest U.S. IPOs (as measured by market value at the IPO price) between 2016 and 2025. It also details how those stocks performed during their first year on the market.

Among the 10 largest U.S. IPOs in history, the average stock returned 24% during its first year on the public market. If SpaceX follows that trajectory, the stock will trade at $167 per share in June 2027. That implies 45% upside from the current share price of $115.
I think $167 per share is a sensible forecast. It implies a market value of $2.1 trillion, which means the stock would trade at 30 times projected sales for 2027. That is not cheap, but it is much cheaper than the current valuation.
More importantly, even if I am wrong about SpaceX reaching $167 per share by June 2027, I think patient investors who buy the stock today will outperform the S&P 500 over the next five years. I would start with a small position and add shares if the stock continues to move lower.

That pullback might seem like a buying opportunity for contrarian investors, but I expect its stock to sink even lower before it's considered a bargain.
Why did Coinbase's stock crash?
Coinbase generates most of its revenue by charging transaction fees for spot crypto trades. When interest rates are low, cryptocurrencies often rally as investors pivot toward riskier investments. The opposite happens when interest rates rise, and the crypto market cools off.

Last year, many investors expected the Fed to continue cutting rates in 2026 as inflation cooled. But after the outbreak of the Iran war, oil prices surged and inflation heated up again. As a result, many investors are now bracing for interest rate hikes in the second half of 2026. In other words, the crypto market could remain chilly for the foreseeable future.
At the same time, Coinbase faces intense competition from its bigger rival, Binance; traditional brokerages that are expanding into the crypto market, and a growing list of fintech apps that also offer cryptocurrency trading. Stablecoins, which accounted for nearly a fifth of its top line in 2025, also face an uncertain future as the CLARITY Act remains stalled in the Senate. The broader crypto market also faces unpredictable regulatory headwinds worldwide.
Coinbase is cutting costs and pruning its workforce to offset that pressure, but it still posted back-to-back quarterly losses in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.
All of those issues are driving investors away from Coinbase, even though it seems reasonably valued right now at 21 times this year's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). From 2025 to 2028, analysts expect its revenue and adjusted EBITDA to grow at CAGRs of 5% and 7%, respectively. However, we should take those estimates with a grain of salt, since they're pegged to the unpredictable crypto market.
Why am I bearish on Coinbase's stock?
Coinbase established an early mover's advantage in the crypto market, but it faces too many macro, competitive, and regulatory challenges to be considered a safe investment. Coinbase might eventually bounce back, but it won't attract more attention until interest rates stabilize, the CLARITY Act passes, and it finds more ways to widen its moat against its competitors.

Coinbase Is Down More Than 60% Over the Past 12 Months. Here's Why I'm Bearish on COIN Stock.

Circle could profit from the stablecoin boom.
But new stablecoins, like OUSD, could challenge Circle’s market dominance.
Circle (NYSE: CRCL) issues USD Coin (CRYPTO: USDC), the world's second-largest stablecoin and the most widely used stablecoin in the United States. USD Coin is backed by Circle's own U.S. dollars and Treasuries, and the company generates most of its revenue from the interest earned on those deposits (known as its reserve income). Circle recently won a U.S. bank charter, and its firm compliance with U.S. regulations makes it an appealing choice for institutional investors.
Circle's revenue will keep rising as long as it continues to mint more USDC tokens for investors who want a faster, more digitally flexible alternative to real U.S. dollars. In a recent CNBC interview, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire claimed the entire stablecoin market could grow from about $1 trillion today to tens of trillions of dollars over the coming years. But does that mean Circle's stock will grow at the same rate as the broader stablecoin market?

Circle faces a major existential challenge
Circle's U.S. bank charter and its tight compliance with U.S. regulators might make it seem like an obvious way to profit from the stablecoin market's growth. However, Circle's entire future is pegged to USDC -- and that leading token will face a major new competitor later this year.
That challenger is Open USD (OUSD), a new stablecoin backed by a coalition of over 140 financial, tech, and retail giants. One of OUSD's most prominent backers is Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN), a founding partner of USDC. Coinbase retains USDC's reserve income on its own exchange, and that crucial partnership will automatically renew on Aug. 18.
Unlike USDC, which is only managed by Circle, OUSD is managed by that independent coalition. OUSD's zero-cost minting and redemptions could also undermine Circle's fee structures and reduce the operational friction in using stablecoins. Those decentralized, democratized improvements could quickly make OUSD more popular than USDC.
Why Circle's stock is a risky bet right now
From 2025 to 2028, analysts expect Circle's revenue to nearly double from $2.75 billion to $5.25 billion. They also expect its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) to more than double from $582 million to $1.31 billion.
With an enterprise value of $13.23 billion, Circle might seem attractively valued at 21 times this year's adjusted EBITDA. However, its stock has declined nearly 70% over the past 12 months amid investor concerns about unpredictable macro conditions and competitive headwinds.
So while the stablecoin market could grow rapidly over the next few years as more businesses, governments, and investors adopt it, it doesn't necessarily mean that Circle -- which established an early mover's advantage in this market -- will be a guaranteed winner in that expanding market.

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire Says the Stablecoin Market Is Going to See Record Growth. What Does That Mean for CRCL Stock?

Stripe is trying to purchase PayPal.
There hasn't yet been an agreement reached.
If Stripe succeeds, it'll be positioned as the most important player in stablecoin rails overnight.
On July 15, Stripe made an offer to buy PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) for $53 billion. While PayPal has not accepted that offer as of July 22, with its board opting on July 20 to hold out for a higher price, the acquisition could still very well go through in the near future.
Crypto investors now need to reckon with what these companies have already built separately. Their combination would carry immediate consequences for XRP (CRYPTO: XRP), Solana (CRYPTO: SOL), and other coins, and would dramatically shake up the pecking order among stablecoins, with knock-on effects elsewhere. Let's analyze how this deal could change crypto's competitive landscape overnight despite neither Stripe nor PayPal being crypto-first businesses.

The stablecoin landscape could see a tectonic shift
Stripe's foray into crypto accelerated dramatically with its launch of Tempo, a payments-first blockchain for stablecoins, on March 18. Transaction fees on the network are minimal and can be paid in any stablecoin, as there's no native token. Leading financial companies were Stripe's design partners for Tempo, including juggernauts like Visa, Mastercard, and others.
Then, on June 30, more than 140 organizations, including Stripe, Visa, and Coinbase Global, announced the upcoming launch of Open USD (OUSD), a consortium-backed stablecoin that will launch natively on Solana with additional chains to follow and that shares the reserve yield of its underlying assets with its consortium partners rather than pocketing it as is the norm with most other stablecoins.
PayPal, if it ends up being acquired, will bring the ingredients that Stripe cannot buy outright: consumers.
PayPal's stablecoin, PayPal USD, has a $2.7 billion market cap, with Solana as its default payment network since February. With Stripe's 4 million merchants and PayPal's 439 million active accounts, Tempo could become the primary settlement rail for the largest non-crypto-native stablecoin distribution channel that has ever been built. That would inevitably starve a lot of new capital from cryptocurrencies that depend heavily on stablecoin transfer volume, like Tron, and probably permanently so.
What it means for XRP and Solana
The immediate thing to know is that if Stripe successfully acquires PayPal, it will likely be mildly bearish for both Solana and XRP. But, as both coins compete in a few different segments, it won't be as catastrophic for them as it might be for a chain like Tron.
XRP's original pitch, being an efficient cross-border money transfer layer, was already very questionable and perhaps even untenable before this due to increasing adoption of stablecoins. Ripple's own Ripple USD is somewhat cannibalizing the very enterprise customers in financial institutions that XRP was supposed to serve.
A Stripe empowered by PayPal's resources would aim Tempo at the same buyers, with orders-of-magnitude greater consumer reach. It's hard to see how XRP could compete very effectively in the stablecoin payments space if that happens. Nonetheless, the network has other ways of finding growth, such as hosting tokenized asset management activities.
Solana's exposure is less severe because it's somewhat hedged.
If a merged entity steers stablecoin flows away from Solana and toward Tempo, Solana would lose some of its share of a fast-growing category. On the other hand, if it uses Solana as the rail to reach PayPal's consumers, whether or not the PayPal stablecoin or any other stablecoin is used as the medium, Solana will win because the capital will stay on its chain. And even if Solana loses out, it still has other growth segments which won't be affected, like its expanding base of tokenized stocks on the network.
Even if PayPal doesn't agree to the acquisition, this move by Stripe is yet another recent sign that the big players in the traditional financial sector are making their moves to shore up their crypto infrastructure.
So far, the networks with diversified ecosystems and a collection of different capabilities, look like they'll fare much better than the one-trick ponies, as powerful new players entering their spaces are likely to muscle them out.

Stripe Plans to Acquire PayPal for $53 Billion. Here's What That Could Mean for Crypto Investors.

Looking at options trading activity among components of the S&P 500 index, there is noteworthy activity today in Apple Inc (Symbol: AAPL), where a total volume of 500,831 contracts has been traded thus far today, a contract volume which is representative of approximately 50.1 million underlying shares (given that every 1 contract represents 100 underlying shares). That number works out to 77.1% of AAPL's average daily trading volume over the past month, of 65.0 million shares. Especially high volume was seen for the $320 strike put option expiring July 24, 2026, with 38,143 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 3.8 million underlying shares of AAPL. Coinbase Global Inc (Symbol: COIN) options are showing a volume of 56,454 contracts thus far today. That number of contracts represents approximately 5.6 million underlying shares, working out to a sizeable 74.1% of COIN's average daily trading volume over the past month, of 7.6 million shares. Particularly high volume was seen for the $170 strike call option expiring July 24, 2026, with 3,201 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 320,100 underlying shares of COIN. Notable Thursday Option Activity: AAPL, COIN, CSX

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Tuesday closed up +0.89%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.74%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +1.93%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) rose +0.81%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) rose +1.82%.
Stock indexes settled higher on Tuesday as a rebound in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks gathered steam. The recent selloff in chipmakers has cheapened valuations, enticing dip buyers ahead of earnings results of megacap technology stocks this week, beginning with Alphabet and Tesla on Wednesday. On the downside, software stocks were weak on Tuesday after Morgan Stanley downgraded several in the sector. Also, rising crude oil prices pushed bond yields higher, with the 10-year T-note yield climbing to a 2-month high of 4.64% on Tuesday.

A positive start to earnings season is also supporting stock gains. 91% of the S&P 500 companies reporting Q2 earnings results thus far have beaten estimates, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
WTI crude oil (CLQ26) rose more than +2% on Tuesday to a 5-week high as the US and Iran exchanged strikes for a 10th consecutive day even as mediators sought to revive a truce. The US targeted military command centers, launch sites, and air defenses in Iran today. Meanwhile, Iran attacked US military sites in Kuwait and Jordan. The UK navy also reported Iran struck two vessels around the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump said on Tuesday that the US has “no interest” in meeting with Iran until they are ready for serious peace negotiations.
Also, Houthi rebels on Monday said they will impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia in retaliation for what they say is the kingdom's siege on the Yemeni capital, a potential threat to Saudi Arabian crude exports through the Red Sea. President Trump said Tuesday that if there is a blockade in the Red Sea, the US “will take care of it.”
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings, which begin in earnest this week, is a bullish factor for stocks. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2.
The markets are discounting a 24% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on July 28-29.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.94%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.79%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up sharply by +3.26%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Tuesday closed down -7 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield rose +4.0 bp at 4.632%. Sep T-notes fell to a 1-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 2-month high of 4.638%. WTI crude oil prices jumped more than +2% to a 5-week high on Tuesday, boosting inflation expectations, a hawkish factor for Fed policy. Also, Tuesday's strength in stocks has reduced safe-haven demand for T-notes. Heightened Middle East tensions are supporting safe-haven demand for T-notes after President Trump threatened a disproportionate response for any Americans killed by Iran.
European government bond yields were mixed on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield climbed to a 2-month high of 3.185% and finished up +1.3 bp to 3.163%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -0.2 bp to 5.030%.
The German Jul ZEW survey expectations of economic growth rose +15.8 to a 5-month high of 26.3, stronger than expectations of 15.3.
Swaps are discounting a 4% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks rallied sharply on Tuesday, supporting gains in the overall market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) closed up more than +5%. Sandisk (SNDK) closed up more than +14% to lead gainers in the S&P 500, and Teradyne (TER), Western Digital (WDC), and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +12%. Also, Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up more than +11%, and Intel (INTC) closed up more than +9%. In addition, Applied Materials (AMAT), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +7%, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +6%. Finally, Lam Research (LRCX) and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed up more than +5%, and ASML Holding NV (ASML), Microchip Technology (MCHP), and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed up more than +3%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved higher on Tuesday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) rose more than +1% to a 5-week high. Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +9%, and Circle Internet Group (CRCL) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed up more than +8%. Also, Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed up more than +7%, and Strategy (MSTR) and MARA Holdings (MARA) closed up more than +4%.
Software stocks were under pressure on Tuesday after Morgan Stanley downgraded Adobe, Intuit, and Workday. Atlassian Corp (TEAM) closed down more than -5%, and Thomson Reuters (TRI) closed down more than -4% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Workday (WDAY) closed down more than -4%, and Adobe Systems (ADBE), Datadog (DDOG), and Autodesk (ADSK) closed down more than -3%. In addition, ServiceNow (NOW) and Salesforce (CRM) closed down more than -2%.
Nebius Group NV (NBIS) closed up more than +18% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after Nvidia reported a 9.3% stake in the company in a 13G filing.
Hasbro (HAS) closed up more than +8% after reporting Q2 net revenue of $1.14 billion, better than the consensus of $1.07 billion, and boosting its full-year adjusted Ebitda forecast to $1.45 billion to $1.50 billion from a previous forecast of $1.40 billion to $1.45 billion, stronger than the consensus of $1.45 billion.
3M Co (MMM) closed up more than +7% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q1 adjusted EPS of $2.40, stronger than the consensus of $2.25, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $8.80 to $8.95 from a previous forecast of $8.50 to $8.70.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) closed up more than +7% after Bernstein and Piper Sandler said the company’s revenue from prediction markets is set to overshadow that from cryptocurrency trading as soon as Q2.
General Motors (GM) closed up more than +5% after reporting Q2 net sales of $48.03 billion, stronger than the consensus of $46.61 billion, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $12 to $14 from a previous estimate of $11.50 to $13.50, the midpoint above the consensus of $12.81.
Ralph Lauren (RL) closed up more than +2% after Raymond James upgraded the stock to outperform from market perform with a price target of $410.
Danaher (DHR) closed down more than -10% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q3 non-GAAP core revenue growth of 2.0% to 3.0%, weaker than the consensus of 3.61%.
MSCI Inc (MSCI) closed down more than -10% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $4.94, below the consensus of $4.99, and boosting its full-year operating expenses estimate to $1.54 billion to $1.58 billion from a previous estimate of $1.49 billion to $1.53 billion.
Agios Pharmaceuticals (AGIO) closed down more than -6% after announcing it will not advance the development of tebapivat for sickle cell disease following Phase 2 trial results that failed to establish a differentiated profile versus placebo.
Halliburton (HAL) closed down more than -5% after reporting Q2 adjusted operating income of $683 million, weaker than the consensus of $688.7 million.
Equifax (EFX) closed down more than -3% after lowering the top end of its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $8.39 to $8.69 from $8.34 to $8.74.
