Late Thursday, Mr. Trump announced a slew of new tariffs, including a 10% global minimum and 15% or higher tariffs for countries with trade surpluses with the US. Also, Amazon.com dropped more than -8% to weigh on technology stocks after it projected weaker-than-expected Q3 operating income.
Signs of weakness in the US economy also weighed on stocks after the monthly July payroll report showed US job growth slowed more than expected, and the Jul ISM manufacturing index showed manufacturing activity unexpectedly contracted the most in 9 months.
Stocks fell to their lows Friday on heightened geopolitical tension between the US and Russia after President Trump said the US was moving two nuclear submarines to "appropriate regions" in response to what he called "highly provocative statements" from former Russian President Medvedev.
However, on the positive side, bond yields sank on the weaker-than-expected US economic reports. The 10-year T-note yield fell to a 1-month low of 4.20% as the weaker-than-expected economic reports boosted the chances of a Fed rate cut at the September FOMC meeting to 93% from 40% before the reports were released.
Jul nonfarm payrolls rose by +73,000, weaker than expectations of +104,000, and Jun nonfarm payrolls were revised sharply downward to +14,000 from the previously reported +147,000. The US Jul unemployment rate rose +0.1 to 4.2%, right on expectations.
Jul average hourly earnings rose +3.9% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.8% y/y.
The US Jul ISM manufacturing index unexpectedly fell -1.0 to 48.0, weaker than expectations of an increase to 49.5 and the steepest pace of contraction in 9 months.
US Jun construction spending unexpectedly fell -0.4% m/m, weaker than expectations of no change.
The University of Michigan US Jul consumer sentiment index was revised lower to 61.7 from 61.8, weaker than expectations of an upward revision to 62.0.
Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said inflation is still further from target than employment, and he's not ready to increase projections for 2025 interest rate cuts.
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said the US labor market still appears healthy, though today's fresh job numbers constituted a "disappointing report to be sure."
In the latest tariff news, President Trump late Thursday raised tariffs on some Canadian goods to 35% from 25% and announced a 10% global minimum and 15% or higher tariffs for countries with trade surpluses with the US, effective after midnight on August 7. According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced.
Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 93% at the September 16-17 FOMC meeting and 73% at the following meeting on October 28-29.
This week was the earnings season's busiest week, with 38% of the stocks in the S&P 500 reporting quarterly earnings, double the amount reported last week. Early results show that S&P 500 earnings are on track to rise +4.5% for the second quarter, better than the pre-season expectations of +2.8% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. With over 55% of S&P 500 firms having reported, around 82% exceeded profit estimates.
Overseas stock markets on Friday settled lower. The Euro Stoxx 50 plunged to a 3-month low and closed down sharply by -2.90%. China's Shanghai Composite slid to a 1.50-week low and closed down -0.37%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -0.66%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) Friday closed up sharply by 1-4/32 points. The 10-year T-note yield fell -15.8 bp to 4.216%. Sep T-notes recovered from overnight losses and rallied to a 1-month high Friday, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 1-month low of 4.200%. T-notes rallied sharply Friday on signs of weakness in the US labor market after Jul nonfarm payrolls rose less than expected and Jun was revised sharply lower. Also, the weakness in US manufacturing activity was bullish for T-notes after the Jul ISM manufacturing index unexpectedly contracted by the most in 9 months. Falling inflation expectations also gave T-note prices a lift after the 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 4-week low on Friday of 2.316%. The weak payrolls and ISM manufacturing reports boosted the chance of a Fed rate cut at next month's FOMC meeting to 93% from 40% before the reports.
T-notes initially moved lower early Friday on inflation risks following President Trump's announcement of new tariffs on all countries with trade surpluses against the US. Also, Friday's payroll report, which showed US Jul average hourly earnings rose more than expected, is hawkish for Fed policy.
European government bond yields on Friday moved lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 1-week low of 2.639% and finished down -1.6 bp to 2.679%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell to a 4-week low of 4.509% and finished down -4.1 bp to 4.528%.
Eurozone Jul CPI rose +2.0% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.9% y/y. Jul core CPI rose +2.3% y/y, right on expectations.
The German Jul S&P manufacturing PMI was revised downward by 0.1 to 49.1 from the previously reported 49.2.
The UK Jul S&P manufacturing PMI was revised downward by -0.2 to 48.0 from the previously reported 48.2.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 14% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Amazon.com (AMZN) closed down more than -8% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials and Nasdaq 100 after forecasting Q3 operating income of $15.5 billion-$20.5 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $19.42 billion.
Chip stocks are under pressure today, weighing on the overall market. Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed down more than -6% and Micron Technology (MU) closed down more than -4%. Also, Nvidia (NVDA), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), GlobalFoundries (GFS), Intel (INTC), and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -2%. In addition, Broadcom (AVGO), Microchip Technology (MCHP), and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed down more than -1%.
Fluor (FLR) closed down more than -27% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of 43 cents, weaker than the consensus of 56 cents, and cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $1.95-$2.15 from a previous estimate of $2.25-$2.75, well below the consensus of $2.53.
Eastman Chemical (EMN) closed down more than -19% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.60, weaker than the consensus of $1.74.
Coinbase Global (COIN) closed down more than -16% after reporting Q2 total revenue of $1.50 billion, below the consensus of $1.59 billion.

I could say the same thing about Tether (CRYPTO: USDT), Ripple USD (CRYPTO: RLUSD), and TrueUSD (CRYPTO: TUSD). Applying the same statement to algorithmic and crypto-backed options like Dai (CRYPTO: DAI) would be a slightly greater risk, but I'm feeling adventurous today -- all five of these robust stablecoins will be worth $1 in 10 years.
And that's exactly what makes them valuable. Let me explain.
The unsung heroes of your crypto toolbox
A cryptocurrency that sticks closely to $1 for decades may not sound like a great investment. And you're right -- stablecoins exist for a different purpose. They don't build wealth over time and they don't execute smart contracts. Some of them offer reasonable interest rates, like a savings account in the cryptocurrency space. But generally speaking, stablecoins aren't great investments on their own.
Most crypto investors end up using stablecoins from time to time -- perhaps without even noticing it. Let's say you just opened a Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) account, sending in $1,000 from a traditional bank account to fund your first crypto investments. The first thing that happens is that Coinbase converts the $1,000 dollar-based funding into USDC.
Coinbase classifies your USDC balance as a "cash" position. It's presented right next to a US dollar balance, which is available if you insist but usually shows a zero-dollar total. You see, USDC is a much more convenient way for Coinbase to move dollar-based funds around in its systems. The company also has a direct financial interest in USDC, having co-launched it in a collaboration with Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL) seven years ago.
So Coinbase prefers trading in your dollars for USDC coins, and then you can treat that stablecoin exactly as you would manage an actual cash balance in the same account. Coinbase currently offers a 4.1% annual percentage yield on USDC coins, but direct dollar holdings don't earn any interest. Just one more reason to store your old-school cash in the newfangled stablecoin format.
How USDC and Tether keep their dollar peg
The largest stablecoins, like Tether and USDC, are backed by actual cash reserves. The coin managers match the total market value of their stablecoins with an equal amount of financial assets, usually in the form of interest-bearing federal Treasury bonds.
That may sound boring, but it's a classic business model with strong echoes of traditional banking. It's a lucrative system, too. Circle Internet generated $1.66 billion of revenue from its interest-bearing cash reserves in 2024. The USDC backing accounts held $43.9 billion of cash equivalents at the end of last year. Coinbase reported $910.5 million of stablecoin revenues for the same period, reflecting its USDC interests.
So there are strong ties between the stablecoin universe and the good old U.S. dollar. Stablecoins are not investments, but handy tools for moving money around in an all-digital system. And they form a user-friendly bridge between the two economies. I think of the decent interest rate as a thank-you note, rewarding me for helping Coinbase run a smoother trading platform.
The risks behind algorithmic stablecoins
The cash reserves behind leading stablecoins such as USDC, TrueUSD, and Tether give me confidence in their long-term robustness. Come back in five years, or 10, or 20, and I expect their prices to stay exactly where they are today. As long as their backers remain in business, the stablecoins will be worth a dollar.
In a perfect world, I'd have the same unshakable confidence in experimental stablecoins like Dai. However, Dai's backers don't hold massive cash reserves. Instead, the stablecoin's $1 value relies on mathematical algorithms and some Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) holdings. Sudden shifts in Ethereum's valuation could move Dai's value far away from $1, at least temporarily. The algorithmic stablecoin meltdown of 2022 demonstrated the risks of this approach, though Dai's Ethereum basis should be reliable enough. That's why I'm keeping an asterisk next to this particular $1 price target.
But yeah, most of today's leading stablecoins will surely be worth $1 per coin in 2025, including USDC. And that's alright. I'm not really investing in USDC, anyway.

Prediction: USDC Will Be Worth $1 in 10 Years

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -1.60%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -1.35%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -1.77%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) are down -1.67%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) are down -1.87%.
Stock indexes are sharply lower today, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 falling to 2-week lows and the Dow Jones Industrials falling to a 5-week low. Stocks are slumping today after President Trump's sweeping import tariffs raised concern about the outlook for global economic growth. Late Thursday, Mr. Trump announced a slew of new tariffs, including a 10% global minimum and 15% or higher tariffs for countries with trade surpluses with the US. Also, Amazon.com is down more than -7% to weigh on technology stocks after it projected weaker-than-expected Q3 operating income.

Stocks also tumbled today on signs of weakness in the US economy after the monthly July payroll report showed US job growth slowed more than expected, and the Jul ISM manufacturing index showed manufacturing activity unexpectedly contracted the most in 9 months.
However, on the positive side, bond yields sank on the weaker-than-expected US economic reports. The 10-year T-note yield fell to a 1-month low of 4.224% as the weaker-than-expected economic reports boosted the chances of a Fed rate cut at the September FOMC meeting to 84% from 40% before the reports were released.
Jul nonfarm payrolls rose by +73,000, weaker than expectations of +104,000, and Jun nonfarm payrolls were revised sharply downward to +14,000 from the previously reported +147,000. The US Jul unemployment rate rose +0.1 to 4.2%, right on expectations.
Jul average hourly earnings rose +3.9% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.8% y/y.
The US Jul ISM manufacturing index unexpectedly fell -1.0 to 48.0, weaker than expectations of an increase to 49.5 and the steepest pace of contraction in 9 months.
US Jun construction spending unexpectedly fell -0.4% m/m, weaker than expectations of no change.
The University of Michigan US Jul consumer sentiment index was revised lower to 61.7 from 61.8, weaker than expectations of an upward revision to 62.0.
Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said inflation is still further from target than employment, and he's not ready to increase projections for 2025 interest rate cuts.
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said the US labor market still appears healthy, though today's fresh job numbers constituted a "disappointing report to be sure."
In the latest tariff news, President Trump late Thursday raised tariffs on some Canadian goods to 35% from 25% and announced a 10% global minimum and 15% or higher tariffs for countries with trade surpluses with the US, effective after midnight on August 7. According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced.
Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 85% at the September 16-17 FOMC meeting and 68% at the following meeting on October 28-29.
This week was the earnings season's busiest week, with 38% of the stocks in the S&P 500 reporting quarterly earnings, double the amount reported last week. The earnings results of Magnificent Seven members will be front and center, with Apple and Amazon.com reporting after today's closing. Early results show that S&P 500 earnings are on track to rise +4.5% for the second quarter, better than the pre-season expectations of +2.8% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. With over 55% of S&P 500 firms having reported, around 82% exceeded profit estimates.
Overseas stock markets today are lower. The Euro Stoxx 50 plunged to a 3-month low and is down sharply by -2.80%. China's Shanghai Composite slid to a 1.50-week low and closed down -0.37%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -0.66%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) today are up +29 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -12.9 bp to 4.245%. Sep T-notes recovered from overnight losses and rallied to a 1-month high today, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 1-month low of 4.224%. T-notes rallied sharply today on signs of weakness in the US labor market after Jul nonfarm payrolls rose less than expected and Jun was revised sharply lower. T-notes raced to their highs after the Jul ISM manufacturing index unexpectedly contracted by the most in 9 months. The weak payrolls and ISM manufacturing reports boosted the chance of a Fed rate cut at next month's FOMC meeting to 85% from 40% before the report.
T-notes initially moved lower today on inflation risks following President Trump's announcement of new tariffs on all countries with trade surpluses against the US. Also, today's payroll report, which showed US Jul average hourly earnings rose more than expected, is hawkish for Fed policy.
European government bond yields today are moving lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 1-week low of 2.639% and is down -2.5 bp to 2.670%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell to a 4-week low of 4.509% and is down -3.4 bp to 4.534%.
Eurozone Jul CPI rose +2.0% y/y, stronger than expectations of +1.9% y/y. Jul core CPI rose +2.3% y/y, right on expectations.
The German Jul S&P manufacturing PMI was revised downward by 0.1 to 49.1 from the previously reported 49.2.
The UK Jul S&P manufacturing PMI was revised downward by -0.2 to 48.0 from the previously reported 48.2.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 16% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Amazon.com (AMZN) is down more than -7% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials and Nasdaq 100 after forecasting Q3 operating income of $15.5 billion-$20.5 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $19.42 billion.
Chip stocks are under pressure today, weighing on the overall market. Marvell Technology (MRVL) is down more than -7%. Also, Micron Technology (MU), Microchip Technology (MCHP), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), GlobalFoundries (GFS), and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) are down more than -3%. In addition, Broadcom (AVGO), Intel (INTC), and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) are down more than -2%.
Fluor (FLR) is down more than -32% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of 43 cents, weaker than the consensus of 56 cents, and cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $1.95-$2.15 from a previous estimate of $2.25-$2.75, well below the consensus of $2.53.
Eastman Chemical (EMN) is down more than -21% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.60, weaker than the consensus of $1.74.
Coinbase Global (COIN) is down more than -14% after reporting Q2 total revenue of $1.50 billion, below the consensus of $1.59 billion.
WW Grainger (GWW) is down more than -7% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $9.97, below the consensus of $10.06, and cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $38.50-$40.25 from a previous forecast of $39.00-$41.50.
Moderna (MRNA) is down more than -7% after narrowing its full-year revenue forecast to $1.5 billion to $2.2 billion from a previous forecast of $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.07 billion.
Avis Budget Group (CAR) is down more than -4% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $105.
Reddit (RDDT) is up more than +20% after reporting Q2 revenue of $499.6 million, stronger than the consensus of $425.3 million, and forecasting Q3 revenue of $535 million-$545 million, well above the consensus of $472.7 million.
Homebuilding stocks are climbing today after the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 1-month low, a supportive factor for housing demand. DR Horton (DHI) is up more than +4%, Lennar (LEN) and PulteGroup (PHM) are up more than +3%, and Toll Brothers (TOL) is up more than +2%.
Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) is up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $4.21, stronger than the consensus of $4.12.
Kimberly-Clark (KMB) is up more than +4% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.92, above the consensus of $1.68.
AES Corp (AES) is up more than 3% after forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $2.10 to $2.26, the midpoint above the consensus of $2.14.
Eli Lilly (LLY) is up more than +2% after the Washington Post reported that the US government plans to experiment with covering weight-loss drugs for federal health programs.

Tariffs and Economic Jitters Hammer Stocks

Coinbase Global, Inc. COIN reported second-quarter 2025 net operating earnings per share of 12 cents, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 89.9%. The bottom line decreased 88.8% year over year.
COIN witnessed lower crypto volatility and lower transaction revenue in the quarter while operating expenses increased.
Operational Update
Total trading volume increased 4.9% year over year to 237 million in the reported quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at 235 million.
Total revenues of $1.5 billion missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.5%. The top line, however, increased 3.2% year over year on higher transaction revenues, subscription and services revenues and other revenues.
Coinbase Global, Inc. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Total transaction revenues decreased 2.1% year over year to $764.3 million in the quarter. The decline was due to lower consumer transaction revenues as well as institutional transaction revenues. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $795 million.
Total subscription and services revenues increased 9.5% year over year to $655.8 million in the reported quarter. The growth was driven by higher stablecoin revenues. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at $692 million.
Total operating expenses increased 37.5% to $1.5 billion in the quarter due to higher transaction expense, technology and development, sales and marketing and general and administrative expenses as well as other operating expense.
Adjusted EBITDA was $512 million in the reported quarter, which fell 3.2% from the year-ago quarter.
Financial Update
Coinbase exited the second quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $7.5 billion as of June 30, 2025, down 11.8% from 2024-end.
As of June 30, 2025, long-term debt increased 62.6% from 2024-end to $2.9 billion.
Shareholders' equity was $12.1 billion at second-quarter 2025-end, up 17.7% from 2024-end.
Net cash provided by operating activities was $145.7 million in first-half 2025, a drop of 83.7% year over year.
Q3 2025 Outlook
Coinbase expects subscription and services revenues to be in the range of $665-$745 million, driven primarily by higher average crypto prices and stablecoin revenues.
Transaction expenses are expected to be in the mid-teens as a percent of net revenues.
Coinbase expects technology and development and general and administrative expenses to be in the range of $800-$850 million, driven by headcount growth to support international expansion, new product initiatives and strengthening of customer support & security functions.
Coinbase expects sales and marketing expenses to increase quarter over quarter to $190-$290 million, driven by potential variability in performance marketing and customer USDC balances in Coinbase products, which drive USDC reward.

Management estimates average receivables to be flat to slightly down from 2024. It expects average credit card and other loans to be flat to slightly down from the 2024 level. Total revenues are estimated to be flat year over year. The net loss rate is guided in the range of 7.8-7.9%.
Virtu Financial’s VIRT second-quarter operating income of $1.53 per share for the second quarter of 2025 beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.8%. The bottom line improved 84.3% year over year. Revenues increased 47.5% year over year to $929 million. The top line also beat the consensus estimate by 9.4%.
Adjusted EBITDA increased 69.8% to $369.4 million. Adjusted EBITDA margin of 65.1% expanded 860 bps year over year.

Fluor (FLR) is down more than -27% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of 43 cents, weaker than the consensus of 56 cents, and cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $1.95-$2.15 from a previous estimate of $2.25-$2.75, well below the consensus of $2.53.
Eastman Chemical (EMN) is down more than -17% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.60, weaker than the consensus of $1.74.
Coinbase Global (COIN) is down more than -14% after reporting Q2 total revenue of $1.50 billion, below the consensus of $1.59 billion.
WW Grainger (GWW) is down more than -10% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $9.97, below the consensus of $10.06, and cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $38.50-$40.25 from a previous forecast of $39.00-$41.50.
Moderna (MRNA) is down more than -6% after narrowing its full-year revenue forecast to $1.5 billion to $2.2 billion from a previous forecast of $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion, weaker than the consensus of $2.07 billion.
Avis Budget Group (CAR) is down more than -5% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $105.
Reddit (RDDT) is up more than +15% after reporting Q2 revenue of $499.6 million, stronger than the consensus of $425.3 million, and forecasting Q3 revenue of $535 million-$545 million, well above the consensus of $472.7 million.
Homebuilding stocks are climbing today after the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 4-week low, a supportive factor for housing demand. DR Horton (DHI), Lennar (LEN), and PulteGroup (PHM) are up more than +2%.
Kimberly-Clark (KMB) is up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.92, above the consensus of $1.68.
Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN) is up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q2 revenue of $3.68 billion, well above the consensus of $3.29 billion.
Eli Lilly (LLY) is up more than +2% after the Washington Post reported that the US government plans to experiment with covering weight-loss drugs for federal health programs.

Stocks Slump on Tariffs and Weak US Job Growth

In early trading on Friday, shares of Kimberly-Clark topped the list of the day's best performing components of the S&P 500 index, trading up 7.5%. Year to date, Kimberly-Clark registers a 2.2% gain.
And the worst performing S&P 500 component thus far on the day is Eastman Chemical, trading down 15.9%. Eastman Chemical is lower by about 33.2% looking at the year to date performance.
Two other components making moves today are Coinbase Global, trading down 12.9%, and First Solar, trading up 5.6% on the day.

S&P 500 Movers: EMN, KMB

The total size of the stablecoin industry ($250 billion) still pales in comparison to Visa's market cap ($700 billion).

Stablecoins have exploded onto the crypto scene, and are now a $250 billion industry with strong political backing at the highest levels. New stablecoin legislation, recently signed into law, ensures that stablecoins aren't going away anytime soon. In fact, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent thinks they could be worth as much as $2 trillion within the next few years.
Despite all the buzz surrounding stablecoins, many payment providers -- including Visa (NYSE: V) -- say they are not worried. For now, stablecoins pose no direct risk. But what about in a few years? Here are three stablecoins to watch.

USDC and Tether
The two stablecoins with the greatest potential to disrupt Visa are USDC (CRYPTO: USDC) and Tether (CRYPTO: USDT). As new stablecoin research from The Motley Fool points out, these two stablecoins are truly dominant. Together, they account for 90% of the value of the $250 billion stablecoin market.
Granted, if you are only comparing market caps, it's easy to miss the big picture. After all, Visa has a hefty market cap of nearly $700 billion. That's more than four times the market cap of stablecoin leader Tether, which has a market cap of $158.9 billion. And Visa is more than 10 times the size of USDC, which has a comparatively tiny market cap of $62.6 billion.
But what if we look at the transaction volume of stablecoins instead? According to new research from Messari, stablecoins have already surpassed Visa in terms of overall transaction volume. Tether is particularly strong in Africa and Asia, while USDC leads the way in the U.S. and Europe.
PayPal USD
The third stablecoin to watch is from PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL), and it's called PayPal USD (CRYPTO: PYUSD). It launched back in August 2023 and currently has a market cap of $883.7 million. According to Motley Fool stablecoin research, it now ranks as the seventh most popular stablecoin in the world.
That's where things get interesting, because PayPal has the sort of name brand recognition and consumer clout to make a real difference in the world of payments. It's easy to see how PayPal could decide to push PayPal USD as a form of payment on sites like eBay before rolling it out to a much larger audience.
And, indeed, if you check your PayPal app, there's now a section called "PYUSD Rewards" within the "Crypto" tab. Right now, you can earn 4% by buying and holding PYUSD with PayPal. This seems like a very clever way to onboard new stablecoin users -- entice them with the 4% yield, then encourage them to spend those PayPal stablecoins at partner sites.
Visa vs. stablecoins
So why isn't Visa worried? First of all, Visa says that stablecoins are really nothing new. According to the head of crypto at Visa, they are "just another way to represent an existing currency." Technically that's true, since stablecoins are really just "digital dollars," and dollars have been around for nearly 250 years.
Second, the number of use cases for stablecoins is still rather limited. Mostly, says Visa, they are used for high-value cross-border payments. This is what is likely inflating the value of stablecoin transactions in the Messari crypto report.
Third, stablecoins are mostly popular in emerging markets, where crypto investors view them as a potential hedge against hyperinflation. In places like Latin America, it's arguably better to own a dollar-linked stablecoin than your own nation's currency.
Finally, in the United States, it's not like you're going to go to your favorite supermarket and pay for anything with stablecoins. The technology is just too new, and it's not ready for retail yet. Conceptually, it sounds fantastic. However, replacing one payment system with another is not something you do over the weekend.
What happens next for stablecoins?
That being said, Visa is hardly ignoring stablecoins. The company has already worked to integrate stablecoins into its payment and settlement network. And it has plenty of interesting stablecoin projects on tap, including a new one that just launched in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa's emerging markets.
Of the three stablecoins mentioned above, the one that has the most potential to disrupt Visa is likely USDC. While Tether is much bigger than USDC, it's easier to find a merchant within the U.S. that will accept USDC. Moreover, USDC has lined up some powerful partners within the U.S., including Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN).
While many people think of Coinbase as just a cryptocurrency exchange, the company actually has a growing number of initiatives that involve its proprietary blockchain (Base). One of these is Coinbase Payments, which rolled out in June. This back-end stablecoin integration from Coinbase is what enabled Shopify to start offering stablecoin payment options this summer.
And don't forget about the retailers that are planning stablecoin launches of their own. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that both Amazon and Walmart were planning stablecoin launches. The goal, most likely, is to avoid credit card processing fees by accepting stablecoin payments instead.
So keep your eyes on the stablecoin industry. There are a lot of interesting developments going on, and the size of the industry is certain to grow by leaps and bounds in the coming years. Finding the right stablecoin investment opportunity now could pay off big later.
