Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. operates as a flat-rolled steel producer in North America. The company offers hot-rolled, cold-rolled, electrogalvanized, hot-dip galvanized, hot-dip galvannealed, aluminized, galvalume, enameling, and advanced high-strength steel products; austenitic, martensitic, duplex, precipitation hardening, and ferritic stainless steel products; plates; and grain oriented and non-oriented electrical steel products, as well as slab, scrap, iron ore, coal, and coke. It also provides tubular components, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and electric resistance welded tubing. In addition, the company offers tinplate products, such as electrolytic tin coated and chrome coated sheet, and tin mill products; tooling and sampling; ingots, rolled blooms, and cast blooms; and hot-briquetted iron products. Further, it owns five iron ore mines in Minnesota and Michigan. The company serves automotive, infrastructure and manufacturing, distributors and converters, and steel producers. The company was formerly known as Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. and changed its name to Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. in August 2017. Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. was founded in 1847 and is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio.

And if prognostications are correct that this revolution is still in its infancy, the following stocks could have more upside in store for smart investors.
Forged in steel, remaking itself with AI help
In a bygone era of AI investing -- say, maybe, just two years ago -- few investors would have flocked to steel stocks as AI plays, but today, that notion is to be embraced, not scoffed at. Up nearly 50% over the past year, Cleveland-Cliffs (NYSE: CLF), the largest producer of flat-rolled steel in the U.S., has AI legitimacy, and not just because it's looking to sell idled mills to data center companies to reduce debt.
Obviously, any new data center being constructed needs steel, potentially representing another end market for Cleveland-Cliffs, but the company's AI ties run even deeper than that. All the talk about energy as a "bottleneck" or "chokepoint" for hyperscalers is relevant to investors considering this steel stock, because upgrading or building new transmission cores requires grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES).
Guess who has the U.S. monopoly on GOES? Cleveland-Cliffs. From 2025 through 2030, the GOES market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6%, but in North America, where Cleveland-Cliffs does business, that CAGR is estimated to be 6.1%.
And for good measure, the steelmaker recently inked a deal with Palantir Technologies to use AI in its logistics and manufacturing processes. That could result in operational efficiencies over time.
Not a chip stock, but...
Air Products and Chemicals (NYSE: APD) definitely isn't a semiconductor stock, but what's good for the chip industry can benefit this materials name because it's a major supplier of the industrial gases needed to manufacture electronic components, and that's a big reason the company is sitting on a $9 billion order backlog.
As just one example of Air Products' enviable positioning on the picks-and-shovels side of the AI trade, the materials company recently notched a deal to construct and operate a specialty gas facility for Samsung Electronics. Yes, that Samsung. The South Korean company, a giant in dynamic random-access memory, is working to address a key AI bottleneck.
Air Products isn't just an AI story. It's an execution story. The shares are up 23.5% year to date, in part because management is navigating a tough environment with aplomb, and Wall Street is taking note. There's a belief that Air Products is out of its "show me" phase and can engineer earnings growth, aided by pricing power.
Gassing up, Part 2
Linde (NASDAQ: LIN) is another producer of industrial gas, and in the helium realm, it forms an oligopoly with Air Products. These companies' podium positions in the global helium market are worth noting because supplies of that industrial gas are currently constrained by the war in Iran, as a significant share of helium flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The other issue confounding the helium market is that Russia is a major producer of the gas, and, because of Western sanctions, companies like Linde can't source it there.
That's rough on chipmakers because helium is essential for wafer cooling and contamination prevention. In a telling anecdote, the word "helium" was mentioned roughly a dozen times on Linde's first-quarterearnings conference callwith sell-side analysts.
Linde notes it's well-positioned to meet current helium demand, supported by long-term commitments it's working to secure. Linde's ability to keep helium customers satisfied in a challenging environment is commendable and could pave the way for long-term share appreciation, as helium is irreplaceable in chip manufacturing.
So, without helium, there is no fourth industrial revolution, which supports the case for Linde and rival Air Products.

The stock moved higher after investors digested last week’s first-quarter results that modestly beat revenue expectations and showed a narrower loss. Investors are watching steel sector earnings to assess fundamental company strength in a strong demand and pricing environment. Cleveland-Cliffs shares initially dropped after its Q1 report last week as investors focused on a net loss exacerbated by one-time energy costs.

Momentum in steel
SDI's record shipments led to an 84% increase in net income compared with last year. CEO Mark Millett noted, "The improvement in earnings was driven by record steel shipments combined with higher steel prices." Demand remains strong even amid strong pricing. Yet not every steel company is taking advantage of this environment.
Cleveland-Cliffs also reported earnings this week, but its CEO, Lourenco Goncalves, said that his company faced unfavorable pricing due to lags from contract business, and high energy prices also impacted the quarter.
Another big domestic player will report earnings next week. Nucor should mirror SDI's view on demand, pricing, and the strength of its order book. Those trends are supported by steel trade actions, manufacturing growth, and infrastructure initiatives. If Nucor instead highlights headwinds, investors can expect even more capital to flow into SDI stock.

Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) Q1 2026 Earnings Transcript

We start a new trading week with Friday’s hopefulness about fruitful peace talks with Iran hitting the rocks this morning. A scheduled meeting in Islamabad this week between the two warring factions is now off, following the weekend seizure of an Iranian oil vessel attempting to broach the U.S. blockade outside the Strait of Hormuz.
Peace talks are obviously key to getting the Strait opened again, and the longer it remains closed, the more global supply is choked off and all oil-based products — not just gasoline — will come with even-higher price tags. Iran’s strategy all along has been to attack the economies of the West, while a vast array of approaches have thus far been employed by the Trump administration.
Analysts are considering the near-term timeline currently: the cease-fire reached between the U.S. and Iran is due to expire tomorrow night, and with animosities apparently climbing again, it remains to be seen if another extension can be wrangled. As a result, pre-market futures are weaker this morning: the Dow is -225 points, -0.45%, the S&P 500 is -31, -0.44%, the Nasdaq -113 points, -0.42% and the small-cap Russell 2000 is -22 points, -0.81%.
Economic Reports Expected This Week
Aside from the ongoing real-life saga in the Middle East, we have plenty of other grist for the mill this week: Tuesday brings us Retail Sales and Pending Home Sales results for March, and Business Inventories for February. Thursday has Weekly Jobless Claims and S&P flash PMI in Services and Manufacturing for April, and Friday is April Consumer Sentiment results.
While important, these metrics are unlikely to move the needle in terms of equity-market conduct this week, especially relative to developments in and around Iran. We’re still a week and a half away from the Fed’s preferred gauge of inflation, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE), which happens to come a day after what will likely be the final Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting under the helm of Fed Chair Jerome Powell. And we’ll next see a new “Jobs Week” two weeks from now.
Cleveland-Cliffs Beats Q1 Estimates
American steel producer Cleveland-Cliffs CLF reported better-than-expected results in its Q1 report this morning, with a bottom-line loss of -$0.40 per share coming in 4 cents better than the Zacks consensus. Revenues of $4.92 billion in the quarter was +1.8% ahead of projections, and nicely up from the $4.63 billion reported in the year-ago quarter. Shipments grew +9% in the quarter, but expected energy price headwinds are expected going forward.

Market Awaits Economic Data

(RTTNews) - Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (CLF) reported a first quarter GAAP net loss of $229 million, or $0.42 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $486 million, or $1.01 per diluted share, a year ago. Adjusted net loss was $0.40 per diluted share compared to a loss of $0.93 per diluted share.
Adjusted EBITDA was $95 million, which included an $80 million negative one-time impact due to a cold-weather driven energy price spike. This is compared to an adjusted EBITDA loss of $179 million, last year. First-quarter consolidated revenues were $4.9 billion, compared to $4.6 billion, a year ago. Steel shipments were 4.1 million net tons, for the quarter.
For 2026, the company maintained its steel shipment volume guidance at approximately 16.5-17.0 million net tons.
Shares of Cleveland-Cliffs are up 2.16% to $10.16 in pre-market trade on Monday.
