A top bank with a fortress balance sheet
JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) is the largest bank in the United States, with total assets under management exceeding $3.8 trillion. To put that size in perspective, it's nearly 50% larger than Bank of America, and more than Citigroup (NYSE: C) and Wells Fargo combined.
Led by CEO Jamie Dimon since 2005, JPMorgan Chase has a track record of prudent capital and risk management that has enabled it to navigate challenging economic and market conditions. The bank emerged from the 2008 financial crisis well, which is how it grew into the behemoth it is today.
More recently, JPMorgan Chase expertly navigated the rising interest rate environment in 2022 and 2023. Not only did the bank see excellent growth in net interest income, but it also did a good job of "hoarding cash" during the ultra-low interest rate era during the pandemic and has put that cash to work in today's higher interest rate environment.
While some banks were experiencing deposit outflows amid the 2023 regional banking crisis, JPMorgan, with its fortress balance sheet, was well-positioned to acquire the assets of failed First Republic Bank.
JPMorgan Chase has done an excellent job navigating various environments. Next year, the bank projects net interest income excluding markets to be around $95 billion, or a roughly 3% increase from this year. Robust capital market activity should also be a tailwind for JPMorgan, which has established a strong investment banking presence.
A rebound in capital markets should benefit this investment bank
A rebound in capital markets should bode well for Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) and its investment banking-heavy business.
The rising interest rate environment from 2022 to 2023 stifled investment banking activity. At the time, many companies put plans to go public on hold, as they awaited better market conditions. Not only that, but mergers and acquisitions also came to a crawl, as major mergers faced heightened scrutiny for antitrust reasons.
However, conditions have improved, and capital markets are heating up. According to Renaissance Capital, 196 initial public offerings (IPOs) have been priced this year, up 40% from 2024. Meanwhile, the total proceeds raised from those IPOs were $36.4 billion, representing a 26% year-over-year increase. This year has seen the return of some major IPOs, including Figma, CoreWeave, and Circle Internet Group.
Meanwhile, dealmaking has also increased. According to EY, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity increased 8.3%. However, the real growth was in major deals, as total deal value surged 146.5% year over year.
Positive momentum is expected to continue. CFO Denis Coleman informed investors during Goldman's third-quarter earnings call that "we continue to see strong momentum with our quarter-end backlog at its highest level in three years." Barring any market disruptions, the bank expects M&A activity to be even stronger heading into 2026, which would be a tailwind for Goldman Sachs.
This bank is undergoing a transformation
Citigroup has lagged its peers for years on key metrics such as return on equity. Part of the reason was its sprawling business, along with regulatory actions, such as fines for deficiencies, that have weighed on the bank and its operating efficiency.
Under the leadership of CEO Jane Fraser, the bank is seeking to reinvent itself. It's making some tough decisions, including cutting bonuses for top employees, reducing the number of layers of management, and selling off its less profitable business units.
As part of this, the bank is divesting from its Mexico retail bank, Banamex. The bank will sell 25% of its stake to businessman Fernando Chico Pardo for approximately $2.3 billion. It plans to go public with its remaining stake, which is expected sometime next year.
Citigroup trades at 1.14 times tangible book value (P/TBV), which is significantly cheaper than JPMorgan Chase (P/TBV of 3.03) and Goldman Sachs (P/TBV of 2.56), making it more appealing to investors seeking value. Citigroup also operates a large investment banking business, which should provide another favorable tailwind as it undergoes its transformation.

PNC Financial's Arm to Offer Direct Bitcoin Access via Coinbase

Shares of JPMorgan JPM fell 4.7% in yesterday’s trading session after Marianne Lake, the CEO of the company’s Consumer and Community Banking business, said at the Goldman Sachs 2025 U.S. Financial Services Conference that the Wall Street giant’s total expenses in 2026 are expected to rise by more than $9 billion to $105 billion.
The 4.7% drop is the biggest single-day decrease in JPM’s share price since April 2025.
Per Lake, the jump in costs will be primarily driven by an increase in growth and volume-related spending (like compensation costs, costs for branching/expansion, and costs related to credit card business growth), along with an increase in expenses related to investments in technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
Apart from these, structural inflation related costs like higher real estate and general operating overhead expenses will result in a rise in overall firm-wide expenses.
However, JPMorgan believes that such spending is purposeful as it is intended to support growth, investments in strategic areas and long term positioning, rather than mere cost escalation.
Details on JPM’s Branch Expansion Plans
Despite the rise of mobile and online banking, JPMorgan has been expanding its footprint in new regions. The company is expanding its affluent banking services by opening 14 new J.P. Morgan Financial Centers and plans to open more than 500 new branches by 2027, with 150 already built in 2024.
With this, JPM aims to boost market share and seize cross-selling opportunities in cards and auto loans.
Moreover, the company is committed to renovating 1,700 existing locations by 2027 to serve its customers better. In 2021, JPMorgan launched its digital retail bank, Chase, in the U.K. and plans to expand the reach of its digital bank across the European Union (to open a digital bank in Germany by mid-2026).
Lakes’ Other Comments at the Conference
Regarding the consumer and small-business segments, while JPM does not expect them to collapse, it sees them as more vulnerable than a year or two ago.
Lake stated, “Consumers look resilient, small businesses are resilient, but there's less capacity to weather an incremental stress because cash buffers have normalized and price levels absolutely are high even as inflation has come down at least. So I would just say that I would characterize the environment as being a little bit more fragile.”
She added, “Our outlook for next year would be for unemployment to grind a little higher and therefore, that to be reflected in consumption.”
In contrast to the warning on expenses, Lake gave a rather optimistic guidance for JPMorgan’s capital markets business. She said that the company’s investment banking (IB) fees are expected to increase in the low-single digit in the fourth quarter of 2025, while its markets revenues are expected to rise in the low teens.

Outlook Provided by JPM’s Peers at the Conference
Citigroup’s C CFO Mark Mason said that the company’s IB fees are expected to jump in the fourth quarter of 2025 on a year-over-year basis, as deal-making continues to swell. Mason stated, “On the investment banking side, we're seeing continued momentum, particularly in M&A. We're probably looking at investment banking fees up in the mid-20s (percentage) year-over-year.”
However, Citi expects its markets revenues to be down in the low to mid-single digit in the fourth quarter from a year ago. Mason said, “The capital markets are wide open to some extent. We're seeing a lot of investment grade activity. Despite the shutdown, equity volumes and IPO volumes have held up.”
KeyCorp KEY anticipates adjusted total revenues (tax equivalent) to rise 15% in 2025 from the prior year, reflecting record revenue growth on the back of robust fee income and net interest income.
KEY expects fee income to exceed $750 million in the fourth quarter of 2025, with IB fees coming in $10-20 million higher than the prior-year quarter, higher than the flattish guidance earlier.

JPMorgan Stock Slides on Warning of Steep 2026 Expense Growth

Last week, Netflix agreed to buy the studio and streaming businesses from Warner Bros. Discovery in a deal valued at $72 billion.
Paramount Skydance announced a hostile takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery for $77.9 billion, but it isn't an apples-to-apples comparison.
There's still a long road ahead before any deal is consummated.
Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) surprised Wall Street and Main Street alike last week when the streaming giant announced its intention to acquire the studio and streaming businesses from Warner Bros. Discovery (NASDAQ: WBD) in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $72 billion. The long-rumored agreement capped off weeks of negotiations and would create a global multimedia and entertainment powerhouse.
All that remained was for the deal to receive regulatory approval, with many industry watchers predicting a heightened level of scrutiny.

However, the proposed deal hit a snag when Paramount Skydance (NASDAQ: PSKY) announced a hostile takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, ramping up the drama and casting doubt on the existing agreement.
Going directly to shareholders
In a press release that dropped Monday morning, Paramount Skydance sidestepped the negotiation process, appealing directly to shareholders with an all-cash offer of $77.9 billion or $30 per share. Paramount argued that its "strategically and financially compelling" deal was a "superior alternative" to the existing Netflix offer, citing the potential for regulatory scrutiny and a higher per-share price.
It's important to note that this is not an apples-to-apples comparison. Paramount suggests its deal "provides shareholders $18 billion more in cash" than the Netflix's acquisition bid. While technically true, the devil is in the details, and the claim needs context.
Paramount is offering $30 per share for the entire company. Netflix's bid of $27.75 -- which included $23.25 in cash and $4.50 in Netflix stock -- was just for the acquisition of the company's film and television studios, as well as HBO and HBO Max.
The deal with Netflix did not include Warner Bros. Discovery's sizable suite of cable channels, which includes CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, Travel Channel, Animal Planet, Food Network, Cartoon Network, and more. Warner Bros. had previously announced plans to spin off its cable assets, which Netflix argues will be worth several dollars per share, making its bid superior. Warner Bros.' board of directors seemingly came to the same conclusion when they accepted Netflix's bid over Paramount's.
The worst of both worlds
This could be bad news for Netflix. A hostile takeover bid after negotiations are complete could result in several unfavorable outcomes for the streaming giant. If Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders accept the deal from Parmount, Netflix could ultimately lose its prize. There's also the possibility that this could turn into a messy and protracted bidding war, which could drive up the final cost to acquire Warner Bros. Indeed, the stock surged Monday morning as the emergence of a motivated suitor could increase the stakes for any potential deal.
Paramount CEO David Ellison apparently had this in mind and has already lined up a laundry list of backers to secure the deal. The roster includes not only the considerable resources of the Ellison family and private equity firm RedBird Capital, but also debt commitments from Citi, Bank of America, and Apollo Global Management.
On the other hand, with its industry-leading recommendation engine and a treasure trove of data two decades in the making, I would argue that Netflix knows what Warner Bros. Discovery's content is worth, so it's unlikely to overpay for it.
Lies, damned lies, and statistics
Both Netflix and Paramount are painting themselves as the company most likely to pass regulatory muster.
In an interview with CNBC, Ellison made his case directly to the investing public, saying, "When you fundamentally look at the marketplace, allowing the No. 1 streaming service (Netflix) to combine with the No. 3 streaming service (HBO) is anticompetitive."
Netflix argues a similar point, but is using different statistics. According to TV rating provider Nielsen, Paramount controls 8.2% of total TV viewing time, compared to 8% for Netflix. For context, Netflix is sixth on the list, behind Alphabet's No. 1 YouTube and No. 2 Disney, which suggests robust competition exists.
Ultimately, it will be up to regulators to decide which measurement more accurately reflects reality.
What's next?
Netflix and Warner Bros. have a lot at stake if the agreement falls apart. If Netflix walks away or regulators quash the deal, the company would owe a $5.8 billion breakup fee to Warner Bros. Discovery. On the other hand, if Warner Bros. accepts a competing proposal or otherwise violates the agreement, it will be on the hook for a $2.8 billion payment to Netflix.
Recent developments suggest this drama is far from over. Any marriage will still require regulatory approval, and how that will play out -- and in whose favor -- is still anyone's guess.
For now, investors should sit tight and watch while the story unfolds.

Is the Netflix Deal to Buy Warner Bros. Already in Trouble?

Outside of the Federal Reserve and trade, nothing is likely to impact the US economy and stock market more than the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. As such, whether one is a tech investor or not, the industry is worth watching. With so much going on in the industry from a regulatory, investment, and international perspective, it’s worth taking some time to track the latest headlines. Below are three of the most impactful AI headlines this week:
Trump Executive Order: One Rule Book for AI
One of the benefits under the Tenth Amendment of the United States Constitution is that “all powers not granted to the federal government are reserved for the states and the people.” In other words, because the United States is diverse, states have autonomy from the Federal government over issues such as health, public safety, and education. However, in certain instances, like AI, the federal government must take control, as without one rule book, regulations become too cumbersome, unrealistic, and anti-innovation. For this reason, on Monday, the Trump Administration announced plans for an executive order next month seeking to create a national AI rule.
In a lengthy social media post, “AI Czar” David Sacks presented the logic behind the executive order decision. Below is an excerpt:
“When an AI model is developed in state A, trained in state B, inferenced in state C, and delivered over the internet through national telecommunications infrastructure, that is clearly interstate commerce, and exactly the type of economic activity that the Framers of the Constitution intended to reserve for the federal government to regulate. In the absence of preemption, 50 different states will assert their jurisdiction, creating a patchwork of 50 different regulatory regimes, often in contradiction with each other. Indeed this is already happening. Over 1,200 bills have been introduced in state legislatures, and over 100 measures have already passed.”
For US stock market and AI bulls, it is absolutely critical that this bill passes. If US AI firms are bogged down by 50 different sets of rules, competing with cutthroat competition like China seems highly unlikely.
Nvidia Reportedly Allowed to Sell H200s to China
Nvidia (NVDA), which designs the most powerful AI chips worldwide, has been caught in the middle of trade tensions between the United States and China. However, after cooling tensions between the two economic rivals and several meetings, the US Commerce Department is reportedly prepared to permit the sale of NVDA H200s to China.
China hawks argue that by selling powerful AI chips to China, the US risks China becoming too powerful militarily. Conversely, proponents of a more open market suggest that China will get their hands on these chips through backdoor means or eventually catch up to Nvidia’s groundbreaking technology.
Baidu Rises on Reports of AI Chip Spin-Off
Baidu (BIDU), the ‘Google of China,’ is up ~10% over the past two sessions after a report suggested that the Chinese tech giant may spin off and IPO its Kunlun AI chip unit. Today, Citi (C) reiterated its buy rating and $181 price target for the stock.

UBS Group AG UBS is preparing to cut up to 10,000 employees globally by 2027 as it advances the integration of Credit Suisse, according to Business Today news, which was published on MSN News. The reduction could affect roughly 9% of UBS’s workforce, which stood at about 110,000 at the end of 2024.
Since acquiring Credit Suisse in 2023, the company has already eliminated approximately 15,000 positions, mainly from overlapping roles created by the merger. In the third quarter of 2025, the bank cut nearly 322 positions compared with the previous quarter and 6,549 compared with the same period last year. Looking ahead, workforce reduction may accelerate depending on the progress of Credit Suisse’s integration. These reductions are aimed at removing redundant positions, improving operational efficiency, and supporting the broader structural consolidation required to integrate Credit Suisse’s operations fully.
While the pace of job cuts is accelerating, UBS continues to make progress on broader cost reductions and streamlining operations, including branch consolidations, client account migrations, and reducing its non-core and legacy portfolios. The bank has already migrated more than 90% of Credit Suisse’s Wealth Management accounts in Luxembourg, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. It has also transferred more than two-thirds of all Credit Suisse client accounts booked in Switzerland as of October 2025.
Meanwhile, the company’s risk-weighted assets in the Non-Core and Legacy division have declined 64% by the end of the third quarter of 2025, ahead of plan, with targets to fall below $8 billion by year-end and $4 billion by 2026. Since 2022, UBS has delivered $10 billion in gross savings, representing roughly 77% of its $13 billion exit-rate savings target for 2026.
These measures reflect the company’s disciplined effort to integrate Credit Suisse, streamline operations, and optimize efficiency as it navigates ongoing staff reductions.
Similar Move by Other Financial Firms
In June 2025, BlackRock, Inc. BLK announced plans to cut 300 jobs, affecting more than 1% of its workforce. This marked the company’s second reduction this year, following a January cut of approximately 200 positions aimed at realigning resources with the firm’s strategic priorities. Since 2023, BlackRock’s employee count has grown by more than 14% after acquiring Global Infrastructure Partners in October 2024 and Preqin Ltd. in March 2025.
The workforce reductions aim to streamline operations and optimize resources, supporting BlackRock’s efforts to improve profitability and integrate its recent acquisitions.
In the same month, Citigroup Inc. C announced it would reduce approximately 3,500 jobs at its Shanghai and Dalian technology centers by the fourth quarter of 2025, following a $136 million U.S. regulatory fine tied to data management issues. The reductions are part of Citigroup’s broader global overhaul, which includes 20,000 workforce cuts by 2026, aiming to simplify governance, reduce management layers, and improve operational efficiency, with expected annualized savings of $2–2.5 billion.
The move aligns with ongoing efforts to focus on core businesses, including the exit from consumer banking operations in 14 international markets, freeing capital for higher-return segments like wealth management and investment banking.

Once you've done that, look for cryptocurrencies that are already relatively established and have real-world utility. These are more likely to survive long term.
Here are three to consider.
1. Bitcoin
When I first started investing in cryptocurrencies, I got frustrated with lists like these that started with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC). It's the biggest and best-known crypto out there, and back then I wanted to find under-the-radar projects that still had the potential to go to the moon. Since then, I've seen prices plummet, and some of those lesser-known projects have collapsed completely.
A look at historical prices shows that Bitcoin is one of the best choices for long-term investors. It is still volatile, but it's always erased its losses and gone on to reach new highs. If you only hold one cryptocurrency, make it Bitcoin or Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH).
Bitcoin has potential as the backbone to the on-chain economy. It is already attracting increased institutional and corporate investment, and some governments have added it to their reserves. Another area where Bitcoin may stand out is as a form of digital gold -- a safe asset that may offer a hedge against inflation. It has yet to prove itself in this regard, but it may do so as it continues to mature.
2. Ethereum
Ethereum is the second-biggest crypto by market capitalization. It was the first crypto to introduce smart contracts, which are what make cryptocurrencies programmable. Smart contracts allow developers to use Ethereum's ecosystem to build other cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and a host of decentralized applications.
Critics point to Ethereum's high fees and relatively slow transaction times. That hasn't stopped Ethereum from retaining its dominant position in decentralized finance. According to DefiLlama, almost 60% -- more than $70 billion -- of the funds in on-chain applications are on the Ethereum network. Some are turning to faster, lower-cost cryptocurrencies like Solana (CRYPTO: SOL), but when it comes to handling people's money, reliability goes a long way.
One of the exciting things about blockchain this year is that we've seen big steps toward mainstream integration for real-world asset tokenization, particularly stablecoins. If companies use public blockchains for these projects, Ethereum and Solana are both strong choices. That could translate into growth in the coming decades.
There's now a legal framework for stablecoins in the U.S., and Citi thinks issuance could grow from about $280 billion today to as high as $4 trillion by 2030. Broader tokenization of other assets, such as equities, bonds, and real estate, also look likely to soar in 2026 and beyond.
3. Chainlink
If, like my former self, you're looking for a lesser-known cryptocurrency with potential, Chainlink (CRYPTO: LINK) is one to have on your radar. Chainlink is an oracle crypto, which means it feeds data from other blockchains and the real world into decentralized workflows. I mentioned smart-contract cryptos -- these are tiny pieces of decentralized blockchain code.
Automated code needs accurate data. Let's say a farmer takes out a decentralized insurance contract. The idea is that it pays out under certain weather conditions that might damage the crops. It would rely on the oracle to tell it when those conditions are met, triggering the payment. Similarly, if people start to trade tokenized versions of stocks, there needs to be a reliable on-chain source of pricing data.
Chainlink has fallen 40% during the past year. At the same time, it's secured partnerships with major financial institutions, blockchains, and even the U.S. government. This is a cryptocurrency that could underpin many of the uses for blockchain technology, and that gives it strong growth potential.
Consider crypto ETFs
One of the things that holds new crypto investors back is the idea that they need to open an account with a cryptocurrency exchange and figure out a safe place to store their assets. Crypto ETFs take that worry out of the equation, as you can buy them through your brokerage account. The fund takes care of custody, and the ETFs are protected against brokerage failure by SIPC insurance.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs were first launched in early 2024, and Ethereum ETFs followed that summer. Since then, they've attracted more than $100 billion in funds. The first Chainlink ETF has just launched, meaning you can access all these cryptos in ETF form. They are also all available from top cryptocurrency exchanges if you prefer to go that route.

Shares of Bank of America BAC, the second-largest U.S. bank, are poised for another year of double-digit gains, building on its strong 30.5% rally in 2024.
So far this year, BAC stock has risen 23.1%, outperforming the S&P 500 Index. Meanwhile, it has lagged JPMorgan JPM and Citigroup’s C share price jump of 31.9% and 53.2%, respectively, in the same time frame.

Investors wonder whether this is the correct time to buy Bank of America stock or if they should wait for a better entry point. For that, let’s check the company fundamentals and current macroeconomic backdrop to see how the shares will fare going forward.
Factors That Will Support Bank of America Stock
Interest Rate Cuts: The Federal Reserve lowered rates twice this year to 3.75%-4.00%, with another 25 basis points (bps) cut expected next week. This followed a 100-bp cut in 2024. Being one of the most interest rate-sensitive U.S. banks, BAC’s net interest income (NII) is expected to face pressure as interest rates come down. However, fixed-rate asset repricing, higher loan and deposit balances and a gradual fall in funding costs are expected to offset the adverse impact of lower rates.
As rates decline, lending activity is expected to increase. Also, easing regulatory capital requirements will help channel excess capital into loan growth, particularly within resilient commercial and consumer segments. Hence, Bank of America is likely to witness a decent demand for loans, which will support NII expansion. Over the medium term, loans and deposits are expected to witness a CAGR of 5% and 4%, respectively.
Bank of America projects a 5-7% year-over-year increase in NII for 2026, after similar growth this year. Likewise, JPMorgan and Citigroup are likely to demonstrate resilience and steady growth in NII.
For 2025, Citigroup expects NII (excluding Markets) to grow 5.5%. JPMorgan anticipates 2025 NII to be $95.8 billion, up more than 3% year over year. Nonetheless, as interest rates decline, both are likely to face some headwinds in 2026.
Network Expansion & Digital Reach: Bank of America is highly focused on its financial centers as a core part of its growth strategy, combining digital and physical convenience for clients. The company operates 3,650 financial centers in the country and is actively expanding its footprint, especially in growth markets. Since 2019, it has opened 300 new financial centers and renovated more than 100.
BAC has entered 18 new markets since 2014 and plans to open financial centers in six additional markets through 2028. This expansion has already added 170 new financial centers and $18 billion in incremental deposits in those markets. The bank sees the physical network as critical to driving core deposit and account growth, even in a heavily digital era, thanks to client preference for local, trusted in-person advice and expanded relationship opportunities.
The bank's strategic investment in new financial centers and expansion into new markets reflects a broader industry shift toward optimizing branch networks to deepen customer relationships and tap into new business opportunities. In this competitive environment, the ability to blend digital convenience with in-person expertise is expected to give Bank of America long-term leverage in the evolving banking landscape.
The company plans to continue strengthening its technology initiatives and spend heavily on these. These efforts help it attract and retain customers and boost cross-selling opportunities.
Fortress Balance Sheet & Solid Liquidity: Bank of America’s liquidity profile remains solid. As of Sept. 30, 2025, average global liquidity sources totaled $961 billion. The company’s investment-grade long-term credit ratings of A1, A- and AA- from Moody’s, S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings, respectively, and a stable outlook facilitate easy access to the debt market.
BAC continues to reward shareholders handsomely. The company cleared this year’s stress test conducted by the Fed and raised the dividend by 8% to 28 cents per share. In the past five years, it has raised dividends five times, with an annualized growth rate of 8.83%.
Similarly, JPMorgan and Citigroup cleared their stress tests and announced higher quarterly dividends. JPMorgan declared a quarterly dividend of $1.50 per share, representing a rise of 7% from the prior payout. Citigroup announced an increase in its quarterly dividend by 7% to 60 cents per share.
Additionally, Bank of America has announced a new share repurchase plan under which it is authorized to buy back $40 billion worth of shares. The company intends to buy back shares worth $4.5 billion every quarter in the near term.
Investment Banking (IB) Business: As global deal-making came to a grinding halt at the beginning of 2022, it weighed heavily on Bank of America’s IB business. Though the company’s total IB fees plunged in 2022 and 2023, the trend reversed in 2024. This year has had its share of hiccups. It began on an optimistic note, although the market sentiment cooled after the launch of Trump’s tariff policies on 'Liberation Day.'
However, after the initial setback, deal-making activities have regained momentum. Many deals that were put on hold are resuming as there is more clarity about the direction of the economy and tariff plans, with capital remaining available. Thus, BAC’s IB business performance was decent in the first nine months of 2025.
Bank of America targets mid-single-digit CAGR in IB fees and a 50 to 100-bp market share gain over the medium term, building on its 136-bp gain as of the third quarter of 2025. Management plans to deepen integration between corporate and IB, expand middle-market coverage and pursue more large deals. Growth will be driven by AI-enabled insights, senior talent and holistic capital solutions, including private credit and alternative investments, while leveraging its global client reach across 87 jurisdictions.
Asset Quality: Bank of America’s asset quality has been weakening. While the company recorded negative provisions in 2021, a substantial jump in provisions occurred in the following years due to a worsening macroeconomic outlook. The metric surged 115.4% in 2022, 72.8% in 2023 and 32.5% in 2024. Similarly, net charge-offs grew 74.9% in 2023 and 58.8% in 2024. The uptrend for both continued in the first nine months of 2025.
As interest rates are less likely to decline substantially in the near term, it is expected to hurt the borrowers’ credit profile. The company remains vigilant about the effects of continuous high rates on its loan portfolio. The impact of tariffs on inflation is now clearly visible, with numbers trending higher. Hence, the company’s asset quality is expected to remain subdued.
BAC Targets Double-Digit Earnings Growth in the Medium Term
Bank of America’s medium-term strategy focuses on responsible growth, maintaining risk discipline while investing in technology, capital and talent to scale efficiently. It invests more than $4B annually in tech, expanding AI, automation, cybersecurity and digital engagement to strengthen client relationships and productivity.
BAC plans to use data and AI across lending, risk and advisory to improve efficiency, with growth led by higher-return businesses like middle market, global banking and wealth management, alongside international expansion and broader capital solutions.
The bank targets a 55-59% efficiency ratio, along with decent loan and deposit growth. While outcomes will hinge on macro conditions, credit quality, rates and potential regulatory/tech cost pressures, these goals look attainable given BAC’s cost-control track record, diversified earnings and strong digital adoption. As such, the company aims to achieve earnings growth of almost 12% in the medium term.
Bank of America’s Near-Term Earnings & Valuation Analysis
Over the past month, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 and 2026 earnings per share has been revised upward to $3.80 and $4.35, respectively. The consensus estimate for earnings indicates 15.9% and 14.5% growth for 2025 and 2026, respectively.

Bank of America stock is currently trading at a 12-month trailing price-to-tangible book (P/TB) of 1.98X, which is below the industry’s 3.07X. This shows the stock is trading at a discount.

BAC stock is inexpensive compared with JPMorgan, which has a P/TB of 3.17X. On the other hand, it is trading at a premium compared with Citigroup’s P/TB of 1.17X.
Should You Buy or Avoid Bank of America Stock Now?
Even after a strong run, Bank of America stock still looks buyable because the setup for 2026 supports earnings power. While Fed cuts can pressure NII in the near term, repricing of fixed-rate assets, improving deposit costs and rising loan/deposit balances should help offset headwinds, with management targeting 5-7% NII growth in 2026. With a potential pickup in lending as rates ease and capital rules relax, the fundamental backdrop remains constructive.
BAC also has multiple levers that can compound returns. Its expanding physical network, paired with deep digital engagement, supports core deposit growth and cross-sell, while the IB cycle is recovering and management is targeting share gains. With a fortress liquidity profile, an 8% dividend hike and a new $40B buyback plan, shareholders are paid to hold, especially with the stock still trading at a discount to the industry.

Bank of America Shares Climb 23.1% YTD: Is It Too Late to Buy?

Amid favorable interest rates, improving credit demand and capital market activities, 2026 is shaping up to be a potentially strong year for the banking sector. After several years of volatility, thanks to Fed rate hikes and inflationary pressures, banks may finally find themselves in a more favorable macro environment.
The segment has started to fly higher this year. Invesco KBW Bank ETF KBWB has added 25.3% so far in 2025, beating 17.1% gains recorded in SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust SPY. However, the broader financial State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF XLF has advanced 11.3% in the year-to-date frame.
Let’s delve a little deeper into the fact why bank stocks could soar in 2026.
Upbeat Zacks Ranks
The Finance sector ranks second out of the 16 Zacks classified sectors. The Financial - Investment Bank category, from which most big banks come, is also strongly positioned at present. The industry ranks in the top 11% of the 243 industries classified by Zacks.
Steepening Yield Curve in the Cards?
The Fed is currently cutting interest rates. If risk-on sentiment in the market holds (assuming the so-called AI bubble doesn’t burst), long-term bond yields are likely to rise, while short-term yields will decline due to the Fed’s rate cuts.
This would steepen the yield curve — a positive for the banking sector — by boosting banks’ net interest margins. However, healthy credit demand is necessary to support gains in the net interest margins.
Cheaper Valuation
The financials sector currently trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 11.47 versus 20.01 possessed by the S&P 500. The Financial - Investment Bank industry trades at a forward P/E of 17.12X.
Projected EPS Growth of the sector is a solid 9.80% versus the S&P 500’s growth of 7.62%. The Financial - Investment Bank industry’s growth is 18.18%. The financials sector currently has a lower debt-to-equity ratio of 0.32X than the S&P 500’s 0.57X. The Financial - Investment Bank industry’s debt-to-equity ratio is even lower at 0.26X.
Deal-Making in Fine Fettle Despite Trade Uncertainty
Despite ongoing tariff threats and policy uncertainty, banks reported in mid-2025 (mentioned on Yahoo Finance) that corporate clients remain undeterred. Companies are still pursuing mergers, issuing debt and going public. This shows that strategic initiatives are in place, irrespective of short-term trade risks.
Investors should note that for banks’ equities trading desks, volatility isn't a threat; it’s a business driver. Their profits don’t depend on whether markets rise or fall, but on the volume and frequency of trades. As stock prices are volatile this year, banks have benefited from elevated trading activity. In the future, too, banks will be there to enable trades and collect fees at every turn.
Upbeat Q3 Earnings
We now have third-quarter results from 100% of the Finance sector’s total market capitalization on the S&P 500 index. Total earnings for these Finance sector companies grew more than 25.4% from the same period last year on 8.4% higher revenues, with 90.3% beating EPS estimates and 74.2% beating revenue estimates.
JPMorgan Chase & Co. JPM, Wells Fargo & Company WFC, Citigroup Inc. C, Goldman Sachs GS, Morgan Stanley MS and Bank of America BAC beat both top and bottom-line estimates in their latest earnings releases.
The capital markets segment is finally delivering results after several quarters of management highlighting improving deal pipelines. While activity has remained low by historical standards, the favorable regulatory and monetary policy environment makes it reasonable to be optimistic about the sector’s prospects.
Consumer spending and household finances remain stable. Credit demand shows signs of improvement, and delinquencies have declined from their peaks despite some occasional strains.
Bank ETFs in Focus
Against this backdrop, financial exchange-traded funds (ETFs), such as iShares U.S. Financial Services ETF IYG, iShares US Financials ETF IYF, Invesco KBW Bank ETF KBWB, Financial Select Sector SPDR XLF and Vanguard Financials ETF VFH, should gain. ETFs like KBWB and First Trust NASDAQ Bank ETF FTXO have also been hovering around a 52-week high.
