Citigroup generated its highest quarterly revenues of $24.76 billion in a decade, which jumped 14% year over year and topped Zacks Consensus Estimates by more than 4%. More impressively, second-quarter adjusted net income surged 45% on a year over year basis to $5.8 billion. This translated into adjusted earnings per share of $3.15, which crushed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by nearly 16% and climbed more than 60% from the prior year quarter.
Growth was broad-based across the franchise, with investment banking, markets, wealth management, services and consumer banking all contributing to the strong quarter. Citigroup also generated positive operating leverage as revenue growth significantly outpaced expense growth, highlighting that CEO Jane Fraser's multi-year restructuring efforts continue to improve the firm's operating efficiency.
C shares are also experiencing significant momentum, rising 14.4% year to date and outperforming the industry’s growth of 11.6%. Bank of America’s shares have risen 14% while Wells Fargo shares declined 6.4% over the same period.

Liquidity Strength Powers Shareholder Payouts: C enjoys a strong liquidity position. As of June 30, 2026, Citigroup’s cash and due from banks and total investments aggregated to $449.4 billion, lower than its total debt (short-term and long-term borrowing) of $373.3 billion.

Is Citigroup Stock Still a Buy After Its Blockbuster Q2 Performance?

Was it a knee-jerk reaction by investors?
The second quarter proved to be a strong one for big banks, which were fueled by a surge in investment banking and mergers and acquisitions, institutional trading, and rising asset levels. But one big bank failed to impress investors despite reporting solid results in Q2: Citigroup (NYSE: C).
Citigroup stock has tumbled some 7% since the bank reported earnings on July 14. It's surprising given how Citigroup performed, crushing estimates by a wider margin than many of its competitors. But the investment case may have turned negative for many investors on the tepid outlook.

But is this a knee-jerk reaction or a longer-term concern?
Blowout Q2 results
Citigroup turned in an excellent second quarter, with revenue up 14% year over year to $24.8 billion. This beat estimates of $23.7 billion. Net income skyrocketed 45% to $5.8 billion, or $3.15 per share, which destroyed consensus estimates of $2.73 per share. Earnings were buoyed by improving credit quality, as provisions for credit losses were $2.5 billion, 12% lower than the same quarter a year ago.
Citigroup posted strong gains across the board. Net interest income rose 13% year over year across the franchise. Equity markets trading revenue soared 45%, while investment banking revenue surged 44% year over year.
Also, its efficiency ratio, which shows how much the bank spends for every dollar of revenue, sank by 530 basis points to 57.4%. And its return on tangible common equity, another key efficiency metric, soared 430 basis points to 13%.
Given the strong results, investors were looking for the bank to raise its guidance, but it did not, as Citigroup maintained its previous guidance across its key metrics. Not only did Citigroup not lift its outlook, it raised some red flags.
Playing the long game
On theearnings call CFO Gonzalo Luchetti said management expects expense growth to outpace revenue growth in some of the next few quarters as the bank invests in its business. Some of the increased spending will come from pulling forward investments initially slated for 2027.
"We are taking full advantage of the market conditions, particularly if they are good in the second half, to be able to make the investments and take actions that will drive growth for the next number of years. And that is where and that is the message that the Street should be taking from this," CEO Jane Fraser said on the earnings call. "We are playing the long game."
The Street is actually bullish on Citigroup stock, with 77% rating it as a buy. It has a median price target of $156 per share, which suggests 18% upside.
Citigroup stock is cheap right now, trading at 12 times forward earnings and a PEG ratio below 1 at 0.72. And if the next few quarters are choppy, it could become even cheaper. The outlook may have changed the short-term investment case for some, but as Fraser said, they are playing the long game. It might not be a bad stock to pick up if it dips further, as the efficiency and growth metrics have been excellent.

Did Citigroup's Latest Earnings Change the Investment Case?

Oil prices are high, inflation is running hot, and Wall Street is tentatively watching consumers.
Bank earnings from the industry giants are in, and the results are very clear.
U.S. consumers appear to be handling the economic headwinds in relative stride.
There's a saying that Wall Street climbs a wall of worry. One of the big worries right now is around inflation, which is running hotter than the Federal Reserve would like, at least partly thanks to high oil prices (driven by a worrying geopolitical conflict in the Middle East). The fear is that the U.S. economy could be tipped into a recession, as strained consumers are forced to pull back.
You can get a look at how well consumers are doing by examining the second quarter results of big banks. If Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Citigroup (NYSE: C), Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC), and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) are any indication, Wall Street's economic worries may be misplaced.

The big-bank numbers you need to watch
Two of the key metrics used to identify financial strain among a bank's customers are the charge-off ratio and the non-performing loan ratio. The charge-off ratio is simply the percentage of a bank's loans that it believes are uncollectible. That's basically the worst-case scenario view of the credit situation. The non-performing loan ratio is the percentage of a bank's loans that aren't currently being paid, which could lead to a default. That's basically one step ahead of the charge-off ratio.
Bank of America's customers are fine
Starting with Bank of America, one of the world's largest financial institutions, the story looks pretty good. The bank's charge-off ratio was 0.47% in the second quarter of 2026. That's not a bad number, but it doesn't give you the full picture. The first quarter figure was 0.48%, and the charge-off ratio a year earlier was 0.55%. In other words, it looks like the bank's customers are in better shape today than they were a year ago.
The same trend holds with the non-performing loan ratio. It was 0.47% in the second quarter. That was down slightly from 0.49% in the first quarter and 0.52% a year earlier. So this leading indicator of increasing strain is also moving in a positive direction.
Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase customers are fine, too
Wells Fargo's credit metrics showed the same trends as Bank of America. Its net charge-off ratio in the second quarter was 0.34%. That was down from 0.45% in the first quarter and 0.44% a year earlier. The bank's non-performing loan ratio was 0.77%, down from 0.86% in the first quarter and year earlier periods.
JPMorgan Chase's numbers weren't quite as good, but they weren't worrying, either. Its net charge-off ratio was 1.51% in the second quarter of 2026, down from 1.56% in the first quarter and up slightly from 1.48% a year ago. No big moves are taking shape there. Its non-performing loan ratio was more sanguine, with the second quarter figure for its credit card business at 1%, down from 1.15% in the first quarter and 1.07% a year earlier. Credit cards are often where financial strain first shows up.
Citigroup card customers highlight the need to keep watching
That said, Citibank is seeing a slightly weaker trend in its credit card business. The company's general-purpose cards had a non-performing loan rate of 1.3% in the second quarter, up slightly from 1.27% in the first quarter and 1.21% in the year-ago period. The cards the company issues for retailers (private-label cards), which tend to carry more credit risk, had a non-performing loan rate of 2%, down from 2.08% in the first quarter but up from 1.92% in the second quarter of 2025. Citibank's card business is an indication that investors can't ignore the health of the consumer. And yet, the numbers still aren't at worrying levels.
Every bank is different, so these credit metrics are similar but not identical. You really have to take a big-picture view to get a sense of how well consumers are doing right now. When you do that, the answer is that the health of the U.S. consumer is still strong. But, at the same time, the big picture shows that you shouldn't stop monitoring the trends given the geopolitical and economic backdrop.

What Big Bank Earnings Just Revealed About the Health of the U.S. Consumer

Easy come, easy go. At one point yesterday, Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) stock was up 6% -- before giving back almost all its gains at the close. Today, Sandisk continues to slide lower, with losses hitting 6.5% as of 11:25 a.m. ET.
And yet, the news for Sandisk today is actually pretty good.

Citi says "buy chip stocks"
Citigroup this morning called the recent broad-based sell-off in semiconductor stocks a buying opportunity for investors. High demand for AI chips and memory chips at AI data centers is driving chip sales, says Citi, accounting for about 34% of total chip sales, and Citi sees demand continuing to outrun supply through 2030.
Automotive and industrial chip demand accounts for 21% of the market and is also growing. Really, the only place chip sales are sagging is in PCs, mobile phones, and consumer electronics. That's 42% of the market -- a big chunk -- but sales are only weak because memory costs so much, and there's not enough supply!
All things considered, this is bullish for Sandisk, which supplies the memory and reaps the high prices.
Intel sales soar
On top of this positive commentary, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) just reported a big earnings beat -- pro forma profits of $0.42 per share were twice what Wall Street expected. Sales grew 25% to $16.1 billion, Intel's fastest revenue growth in nearly 15 years, and were also more than analysts forecast.
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan says "AI is driving unprecedented demand for compute," with notable growth in sales of Intel Xeon processors for inference solutions (i.e., answering questions). That's a segment of the artificial intelligence market known to require especially large amounts of memory chips to function.
These are all reasons to buy Sandisk stock -- not sell it.

Easy come, easy go. Micron (NASDAQ: MU) stock closed up 3.2% Thursday evening, but it's giving all those gains back this morning, with shares down 5.7% through 10 a.m. ET.
And yet, the news for Micron today is actually pretty good.

Citi says "buy chip stocks"
Let's start with the news from Wall Street, where Citigroup is calling the recent broad-based sell-off in semiconductor stocks a buying opportunity for investors. Insatiable data center demand is driving sales of AI chips and memory chips from companies such as Micron to support them, says Citi. Roughly 34% of semiconductor demand comes from this direction, and Citi sees demand continuing to outstrip supply through 2030.
Automotive and industrial chips demand makes up 21% of the market, and is growing as well. Really, the only market for chips that's weakening is in PCs, mobile phones, and consumer electronics. ACWI, PM, GEV, C: Large Outflows Detected at ETF

(RTTNews) - Mastercard Inc. (MA), the U.S. payments network, Thursday announced expansion of 'In Control' virtual card number platform with new security controls, embedded payments and a single API connection.
The payments company said the enhancements to its business-to-business payments platform were aimed at helping issuers, corporates and platforms manage virtual card programs with greater control and less integration work.
Mastercard said its virtual card ecosystem now spans issuers, direct platforms and corporates across 43 countries and 174 currencies. The company cited data from Kaiser Associates calling 'In Control' the industry-leading virtual card number platform.
The Company will be rolling out two new controls across the virtual card lifecycle. 'Issuer Enforced Controls' let issuers set spend limits, transaction caps and validity periods at card creation. 'Clearing Controls,' first introduced last year, is intended to let corporates and platforms block invalid transactions and manage payment timing beyond authorization.
Citigroup Inc. (C), the U.S. bank, is live with both controls and is expected to be the first issuer to roll them out globally later this year, Mastercard said.
The Company also expanded 'Commercial Connect API,' the market's only single API front door for virtual cards, according to Kaiser Associates.
New features include the ability to apply multiple control sets at the real card level and to combine virtual card creation and payment initiation in one step.
Mastercard said fraud rates on virtual cards were less than one-fifth of those on non-virtual cards, and even lower for cards issued through 'In Control.'
Since launching its embedded virtual card program in March 2025, Mastercard said dozens of partners in expense management, ERP, accounts payable, travel, hospitality, healthcare and e-commerce had joined. It cited a new integration with SAP SE (SAP), the German software company, and a mobile virtual card launch with HSBC Holdings Plc. (HSBA.L), the UK bank, in the UAE.
On the NYSE, shares of Mastercard are currently losing 0.86 percent, changing hands at $527.41.

Mastercard Adds Security Controls, Single API To Virtual Card Platform

The Board of Directors of Citigroup declared a quarterly dividend on Citigroup's common stock of $0.67 per share, payable on August 28, 2026, to stockholders of record on August 3, 2026.
The Board of Directors of Albemarle today announced that it declared a quarterly common stock dividend of $0.41 per share. The dividend, which has an annualized rate of $1.64, is payable Oct. 1, 2026, to shareholders of record at the close of business as of Sept. 11, 2026.
Rollins, a premier global consumer and commercial services company, announced that the Board of Directors declared a regular quarterly cash dividend on its common stock of $0.1825 per share payable September 10, 2026 to shareholders of record at the close of business on August 10, 2026.
Norfolk Southern announced today a quarterly dividend of $1.35 per share on its common stock. The dividend is payable August 20, 2026, to shareholders of record on August 7, 2026. The company has paid a dividend on its common stock for 176 consecutive quarters since its formation in 1982.
The Board of Directors of Air Products today declared a quarterly dividend of $1.81 per share of common stock. The dividend is payable on November 9, 2026 to shareholders of record at the close of business on October 1, 2026.
The Board of Directors of McKesson yesterday declared a regular dividend of $0.94 per share of common stock, a 15% increase from $0.82 per share in the prior quarter. The dividend will be payable on October 1, 2026, to shareholders of record on September 1, 2026. "Today's announcement marks our tenth consecutive year of dividend growth, reflecting the strength of our business, our disciplined approach to capital allocation and our commitment to returning capital to shareholders," said Brian Tyler, chair and chief executive officer. "We remain focused on leveraging our financial strength to execute against the company priorities and create sustainable, long-term value for shareholders."
