Tech stocks that weren't manufacturers of artificial intelligence (AI) hardware were feeling the squeeze this week. Several top tech companies indicated plans to spend heavily on building out their AI capabilities; with that, investors aggressively sold out of software companies.
One of these was customer engagement software specialist Braze (NASDAQ: BRZE). As of Friday morning before market open, the company's shares were down by 15% week to date, according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

200 billion reasons to be worried?
Braze didn't have any news of its own sufficient to move its stock meaningfully. It's clear, then, that the company was caught up in the general software rout. If we have to zero in on one particular catalyst for this, it's the second-quarter results published on Wednesday by Alphabet.
While Google's parent showed robust growth and estimates-beating fundamentals, it raised its guidance for full-year 2026 capital expenditures (capex) to $195 billion to $205 billion. That was up from its preceding $180 billion to $190 billion. Management also said that capex will increase substantially in 2027.
Not surprisingly, Alphabet executives cited the need to invest aggressively in AI infrastructure as a key reason for the higher capex projections.
A stock for the patient
Alphabet has been on top of the tech food chain for decades now, so where it goes, many peer companies will follow. The prospect of mountains of IT budget money being diverted to AI from, say, software implementations and upgrades, spooked investors. We shouldn't be surprised if this fear lingers for some time.
Given this, I'd feel comfortable taking a chance on a solid but beaten-down software company. Any tool that can give a business an edge with customer engagement is inherently appealing, and Braze's solutions qualify. I should caution, though, that these concerns about "AI spend disruption" might not dissipate for a while, so Braze looks more like a mid- to long-term play.

Salesforce is a global leader in customer relationship management that helps businesses unify their sales and marketing data. It currently employs over 71,000 people and serves a diverse global client base, with no single customer accounting for more than 10% of revenue.
In FY 2026, revenue reached nearly $41.5 billion, representing growth of approximately 9.6% over the previous year. The company reported net income of close to $7.5 billion during this period. This resulted in a net margin of roughly 18.0% for the fiscal year.
As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is nearly 0.3x, while the current ratio is approximately 0.8x. Free cash flow for the fiscal year reached roughly $14.4 billion. Note that stock-based compensation represented roughly 23.4% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.
The case for Braze
Braze operates a customer engagement platform designed to help brands process data and interact with users in real time. The company focuses on cross-channel messaging to build loyalty for more than 2,000 global brands. It has not disclosed any major customer concentrations in its recent filings, suggesting a broad distribution of revenue across its 2,528 clients.
In FY 2026, revenue reached nearly $738.2 million, which represents growth of approximately 24.4% year over year. The company reported a net loss of close to $131.3 million for the same period. This reflects a net margin of roughly -17.8% as the business continues to prioritize expansion.
As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 0.1x, and the current ratio is nearly 1.4x. Free cash flow for the year was close to $61.9 million. Note that stock-based compensation represented roughly 201.2% of operating cash flow, meaning reported cash generation is heavily inflated by this non-cash add-back.
Risk profile comparison
Salesforce faces significant cybersecurity risks and evolving data privacy regulations that could expose it to legal liability. Competition remains intense from established software giants like Microsoft and Alphabet, as well as specialized AI-native startups. Additionally, the company must successfully integrate complex acquisitions to realize expected financial benefits.
Braze competes with well-capitalized software providers such as Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) and Iterable, which have greater name recognition. The platform relies on third-party infrastructure from providers such as Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), and any disruptions could harm financial results. Furthermore, strict privacy laws such as the GDPR require ongoing compliance efforts to avoid reputational damage.
Valuation comparison
Salesforce appears more attractively priced based on its Forward P/E, which compares its price to future earnings estimates, compared to the broader sector. Meanwhile, Braze offers a lower P/S ratio, which compares market value to annual sales.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?
Both Salesforce and Braze are designed to help businesses manage customer relationships. But they appeal to different types of investors, depending on their risk profile and goals.
Salesforce has wider name recognition than Braze. Many large organizations rely on it for customer relationship management (CRM), and it’s relatively sticky, with high switching costs. Like many other tech companies, Salesforce has been investing in AI. That makes it more valuable for its customers and offers investors indirect exposure to AI growth trends. Shareholders have benefited from share repurchases and regular dividends. So, of the two, this is the choice for investors seeking growth and stability.
Braze offers a different opportunity. Like Salesforce, it is a CRM platform, but it also provides marketing automation. It is delivering impressive revenue growth and gaining market share despite the industry's competitiveness. This company may appeal more to the aggressive, higher-risk investor. It is still working toward consistent profitability. If it continues to grow, Braze could generate attractive returns for investors, but along the way, the stock may experience some volatility.
For my portfolio, which tends to be conservative, I’d choose Salesforce. It has a proven business model and has consistently performed over time. And with the addition of AI features, the company appears well positioned to keep growing.

AI-driven expansion
Braze helps marketers deploy AI models and agents to better connect with their clients and deliver more personalized experiences. Demand for these AI services is booming.
Braze's revenue jumped 28% year over year to $205 million in its fiscal 2026 fourth quarter, which ended on Jan. 31. The gains were fueled by new business wins and upsells to existing customers.
Braze's customer count expanded by 14% to 2,609. And those with annual recurring revenue (ARR) of at least $500,000 climbed 35% to 333.
"The world's largest and most sophisticated brands are choosing Braze as a foundational partner to drive their AI transformation during this period of intense disruption and opportunity," CEO Bill Magnuson said.
Braze's adjusted operating income, in turn, soared 83% to $14.5 million.
Healthy sales momentum
Management expects the company's revenue to grow to between $884 million and $889 million in fiscal 2027, up from $738 million in fiscal 2026. Braze also projects adjusted operating income of $69 million to $73 million, up from $28.5 million.
Recently expanded partnerships with data analytics leader Snowflake, e-commerce giant Shopify, and digital ad platform The Trade Desk should help to fuel Braze's growth.
"We begin this fiscal year with strong commercial momentum and the fastest pace of new product delivery in our history," Magnuson said.

Why Braze Stock Surged Today

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Wednesday closed up +0.54%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.66%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.67%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) rose +0.56%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) rose +0.68%.

However, stock index futures fell from their best levels on Wednesday, and crude oil prices rebounded from their lows after Iran’s semi-official news agency Fars said Iran rejects the US ceasefire proposal and said a truce and peace talks are not viable in current conditions. Iran wants a complete halt to “aggression and assassinations” by the enemy and the establishment of concrete mechanisms to ensure that the war is not reimposed on Iran. Also, Iran wants guaranteed, clearly defined payment for war damages and reparations, and international recognition and guarantees of Iran’s sovereign right to exercise authority over the Strait of Hormuz.

US MBA mortgage applications fell -10.5% in the week ended March 20, with the mortgage purchase sub-index down -5.4% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -14.6%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +13 bp to 6.43% from 6.30% the prior week.
The US Feb import index ex-petroleum rose +1.2% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.4% m/m and the biggest increase in 4 years.

The IEA on March 11 released 400 million barrels from emergency oil stockpiles and said the war against Iran is disrupting 7.5% of global oil supply, and the conflict will cut global oil supply by 8 million bpd this month. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows, has choked off oil and gas flows due to Iran’s attacks on shipping in the waterway and forced Gulf producers to cut output because they can’t export from the region. Iran is also seeking to control ship transit through the Strait of Hormuz, asking vessels to provide lists of crew and cargo, along with voyage details and bills of lading if they want to travel through the waterway. Goldman Sachs warns that crude prices could exceed the 2008 record high of close to $150 a barrel if flows through the Strait of Hormuz remain depressed through March.
The International Energy Agency said Monday that more than 40 energy sites across nine countries in the Middle East have been "severely or very severely" damaged, potentially prolonging disruptions to global supply chains once the war in Iran ends.

The 10-year breakeven inflation rate dropped to a 2.5-week low of 2.299% on Wednesday.
T-notes fell back from their best levels on Wednesday after the US Feb import index ex-petroleum posted its largest increase in 4 years. Also, weak demand for the Treasury’s $70 billion auction of 5-year T-notes weighed on T-note prices as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.29, below the 10-auction average of 2.36 and the weakest in 3.5 years.
European government bond yields moved lower on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell -7.0 bp to 2.958%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -11.9 bp to 4.839%.
The German Mar IFO business climate fell -2.0 to a 13-month low of 86.4.
ECB President Lagarde said, it is too early to determine the response to the war, and "we will not act before we have sufficient information on the size and persistence of the shock and its propagation." She added that the initial shock may be smaller than in 2022, given a more benign macroeconomic backdrop.
UK Feb CPI rose +3.0% y/y, right on expectations. Feb core CPI rose +3.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.1% y/y.
Swaps are discounting a 62% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on April 30.

Space and satellite stocks surged on Wednesday as The Information reported that SpaceX aims to file a prospectus for an initial public offering as soon as this week. Globalstar (GSAT) closed up more than +11%, and AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) and Rocket Lab (RKLB) closed up more than +9%. Also, EchoStar (SATS) closed up more than +7%.
Chip makers moved higher on Wednesday, a supportive factor for the overall market. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) closed up more than +7%, and Intel (INTC) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +6%. Also, Nvidia (NVDA) closed up more than +2%, and Qualcomm (QCOM) and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed up more than +1%.

Chewy (CHWY) closed up more than +13% after forecasting 2027 net sales of $13.60 billion to $13.75 billion, stronger than the consensus of $13.59 billion.
Terns Pharmaceuticals (TERN) closed up more than +5% after Meck & Co agreed to buy the company for about $6.7 billion, or $53 per share in cash.
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) closed up more than +2% after HSBC initiated coverage of the stock with a buy recommendation and a price target of $325.
