Pre-markets are somewhat reversed this morning: after closing yesterday with the Dow closing in the red slightly and the Nasdaq and S&P 500 in the green, at this hour the Dow is up but the Nasdaq, S&P 500 and small-cap Russell 2000 are down. Oil prices are up again at this hour, sending futures off their early-morning highs.
The Strait of Hormuz remains closed at this hour, likely to remain so, as the latest proposal to open the major shipping channel appears to not find favor with the Trump administration. The war in Iran has already gone on weeks longer than originally anticipated, with no realistic end in sight at this time.
A Wall Street Journal article this morning on OpenAI having missed its quarterly targets is especially hitting the tech-heavy Nasdaq harder, sending the index down -319 points, -1.16%. The S&P 500 and the Russell 2000 are both -0.60% currently, while the blue-chip Dow is up +58 points, +0.12% at this hour.
Case-Shiller Home Prices Slowed in February
Scoring one for lower inflation metrics (albeit in the rearview mirror), the Case-Shiller Home Price Index for February came in at +0.9% on the 20-city composite, down 30 basis points (bps) month over month. Higher mortgage rates for the month put downward pressure on pricing, and real home price returns have now been negative (rising slower than the rate of inflation) for now nine-straight months.
The top-performing cities were once again Chicago (+5.0%) and New York (4.7%), followed by Cleveland (+4.2%). Denver was the weakest market for the month, -2.2%, after several months of Tampa being the weakest market for home price growth. Los Angeles and Washington DC were also lower for the month.
Q1 Earnings at a Glance: BP, GM, KO & More
BP BP shares are up following Q1 results that doubled earnings for the oil supermajor, a direct result of the war in Iran. Earnings of $1.24 per share outpaced the $0.91 in the Zacks consensus, leading to a +36.26% earnings surprise.
General Motors GM had an even better quarter on its bottom line: earnings of $3.70 per share zoomed ahead of the $2.61 consensus by +41.76%. A $500 million tariff refund has bolstered the U.S.’s top automaker, but shares are down -1.23% at this hour ahead of the open.
Coca-Cola KO shares are up +3.45% currently, after outperforming expectations on its bottom line by a solid nickel: 86 cents peer share versus 81 in the Zacks consensus, with the company’s strongest sales growth in nearly two years.
UPS UPS delivered a modest 3-cent earnings beat this morning to $1.07 per share, for a +2.88% earnings surprise. Yet declining volume domestically is weighing on the stock, which is -6% at this hour in pre-market trading.
Spotify SPOT surpassed earnings estimates this morning — $4.04 per share versus $3.72 anticipated — but shares are falling -11% ahead of the opening bell after missing full-year guidance, deepening from its -14% selloff year to date.

Valero Gears Up to Report Q1 Earnings: What's in the Cards?

(RTTNews) - British Oil and gas major bp plc (BP, BP.L) reported Tuesday higher replacement cost or RC profit in its first quarter with increased sales. Further, the firm warned on weak upstream production in fiscal 2026.
In the overnight trading, bp shares were gaining around 1.8 percent, trading at $46.80.
In the quarter, RC profit grew to $662 million from last year's $569 million. Underlying RC profit was $3.20 billion, compared to $1.38 billion a year ago.
Underlying RC profit per share increased to 20.67 cents from 8.75 cents last year. Underlying RC profit per ADS was $1.24, up from $0.53 a year earlier.
Profit before taxation surged to $7.37 billion from prior year's $3.13 billion. Profit attributable to bp shareholders was $3.84 billion, significantly higher than $0.69 billion in the same period of 2025. Earnings per ADS were $1.47, up from $0.26 last year.
Total revenues and other income grew to $53.37 billion from last year's $47.88 billion. Sales and other operating revenues were $52.26 billion, up from $46.91 billion in the prior year.
Upstream production was 2,339 mboe/d, up from 2,239 mboe/d last year.
Looking ahead, bp expects second-quarter reported upstream production to be lower sequentially, due to seasonal maintenance predominantly in the Gulf of America and the effects of disruption in the Middle East. The heightened volatility in the oil and gas prices could also impact PSA contracts.
Further, for fiscal 2026, bp now expects reported upstream production to be lower due to effects of disruption in the Middle East, and underlying upstream production to be broadly flat compared with 2025.
The company expects underlying production from oil production & operations to be broadly flat and production from gas & low carbon energy to be lower.

BP Q1 RC Profit Rises On Sales Growth; Warns On FY26 Upstream Production

Eni S.p.A. E on April 20, 2026 announced a significant gas discovery at the Geliga-1 exploration well in the Kutei Basin, offshore Indonesia. Following the announcement, E shares rose 2.83% to $54.11 per share.
The well, which encountered substantial hydrocarbon resources, is located in the Ganal block, around 70 km off the East Kalimantan coast. The discovery is estimated to contain 5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas and 300 million barrels of condensate.
The Geliga-1 well was drilled to a depth of about 5,100 meters in a water depth of around 2,000 meters. The well hit a substantial gas column in the targeted Miocene interval, which demonstrated strong petrophysical characteristics. A Drill Stem Test is planned to evaluate the reservoir’s productivity.
The discovery highlights the strong resource potential of the Kutei Basin, following the Geng North discovery in 2023 and the Konta-1 discovery in December 2025. This also reinforces Indonesia’s position as an important emerging hub for natural gas and LNG supply.
The discovery aligns with Eni’s broader strategy of focusing on gas as a transition fuel and concentrating on scalable development areas that can accelerate production while lowering costs.
Eni reported multiple recent exploration successes in the same basin, strengthening the commercial viability of the region. The Geliga find is expected to be integrated into existing and planned infrastructure to reduce costs and time, while supporting domestic energy demand and international LNG exports.
The Geliga discovery is situated next to the 2 Tcf Gula field. The combined fields are expected to yield 1 billion standard cubic feet per day of gas and 80,000 barrels per day of condensate. Together, these assets could support a fast-track third hub in the Kutei Basin using the established North Hub concept.
Through its partnership with Petronas, Eni aims to fast-track development and generate additional cash-flow by integrating its technical expertise and resources.
Overall, the discovery is set to unlock significant gas volumes, supporting regional energy security while enhancing Eni’s long-term growth in the global LNG market.

The average Europe Brent spot prices for January, February and March of this year were $66.6, $70.89 and $103.13 per barrel, respectively, per EIA data. The crude pricing environment was quite favorable for exploration and production activities of E, especially in the last month of the quarter. The supporting commodity prices are likely to have aided production volumes.

The price of Brent crude is trading at more than $100 per barrel, per OilPrice.com, thanks to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Also, EIA in its latest short-term energy outlook stated its expectations for the spot average price of Brent crude for this year at $96 per barrel. The highly favorable crude pricing environment will probably aid E, like XOM and BP, to produce at a level that will aid it to meet its 2025-2028 medium-term plan.
Since the integrated energy major generates the lion’s share of its earnings from exploration and production activities, the overall business outlook looks highly promising. The company is not heavily reliant on borrowing, and expects gearing to lie between 10% and 15% this year. Thus, even if the business scenario turns unfavorable, Eni can rely on its strong balance sheet to stay afloat.

Over the last couple of months, analysts have been trimming their expectations for both the current year and next year. That downward pressure on estimates is exactly what drives weaker Zacks Ranks and signals deteriorating sentiment on Wall Street.
Three analysts have dropped their numbers for the current year while two have done so for next year. The bearish moves have slashed our Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current year from $7.05 to $6.54 while next year’s number is down from $7.84 to $7.21.
Why the pessimism? It comes down to the broader environment for auto retailers. Higher interest rates are still biting, making auto loans more expensive and reducing affordability for consumers. That directly impacts vehicle demand, especially on the new car side. At the same time, used car prices have been normalizing, which compresses margins for dealers who were previously benefiting from elevated pricing.
And let’s not ignore the margin story. During the pandemic-era boom, dealerships enjoyed record margins thanks to tight inventory and surging demand. Those days are over. Now we’re seeing margin compression across the industry, and Sonic isn’t immune.

Berkshire Taps Yen Bonds: Does This Signal Confidence in Japan?
Berkshire Hathaway has sold ¥272.3 billion or $1.7 billion worth of yen-denominated bonds per a media report, reflecting a well-structured financing strategy. The 10-year notes offering comprised six tranches, with maturities ranging from three to 30 years, as per the report.
By tapping the Japanese debt market, the company is effectively managing currency risk while taking advantage of the country’s low borrowing costs. This approach enables Berkshire to secure funding at more attractive rates than in the United States and deploy the capital into higher-yielding investment opportunities.
The move likely signals confidence in Japanese assets, building on Berkshire’s existing investments in major Japanese trading houses. Berkshire has been steadily increasing its stakes in Japan’s five companies — Itochu, Marubeni, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, and Sumitomo — since initiating investment in July 2019. By the end of 2025, Berkshire’s aggregate investment cost was $15.4 billion, while the market value of its stakes had grown to $35.4 billion.
Per the 2025 annual report of Berkshire Hathaway, the company has borrowed an amount roughly equivalent to the yen invested (cost basis) in Japan, at an average cost of 1.2%, with a weighted-average life of approximately 5.75 years.
Borrowing in yen creates a natural hedge when invested in yen assets, reducing currency risk by aligning assets and liabilities—consistent with Berkshire’s conservative approach. It also signals potential for greater exposure to Japan, where valuations remain attractive and governance is improving. The move further reflects Berkshire’s strong credit quality, allowing access to global funding at favorable rates.
What About Other Insurers?
MetLife, a major U.S. insurer, has built a strong, long-term presence in Japan. MetLife’s most transformative move was acquiring Alico in 2010. It positioned MetLife as a leading force in Japan’s life insurance sector and reinforced its strategic growth ambitions in Asia.
Aflac Inc. established Aflac Ventures Japan in 2019 to invest in cancer care, HealthTech, and InsurTech startups, fostering innovation for Aflac Life Insurance Japan. In 2018, Aflac converted its Japanese branch into a subsidiary. Today, Japan remains a vital revenue driver, underscoring Aflac’s strategic commitment.

BP and Sonic have been highlighted as Zacks Bull and Bear of the Day

Chevron (NYSE: CVX) was already on track to have a stellar year well before the war with Iran sent crude prices soaring. The oil giant completed several major growth capital projects last year and closed its needle-moving acquisition of Hess. These growth drivers, along with its cost-savings initiatives, positioned the oil giant to produce an additional $12.5 billion of free cash flow at $70 oil this year. With crude prices now in the $90s, Chevron is on track to produce an even bigger gusher of free cash flow.
Higher oil prices aren't the only major additional catalyst for the oil stock this year. Chevron recently added two more drivers to its high-octane growth engine. Here's a look at how they could enhance its long-term growth profile.

Striking more oil in the Gulf
Chevron is a leader in the Gulf of Mexico (also known as the Gulf of America in the U.S.). It's the largest leaseholder with about 1.7 million net acres. Last year, Chevron and its partners started production from the Anchor, Ballymore, Stampede, and Whale fields in the Gulf. These recently completed projects have the company on track to produce 300,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from the region this year. That growing production is helping fuel the expected surge in its free cash flow.
The oil giant and its partners continue to find more oil in the Gulf. Occidental Petroleum recently announced a discovery at its Bandit prospect in the Gulf. Chevron has a 37.1% interest in Bandit (Occidental holds 45.4% and Woodside Energy owns 17.5%). The discovery is adjacent to another Occidental-operated facility and others in the region. That proximity means it has the potential for subsea tiebacks, enabling the partners to leverage existing infrastructure to deliver production faster and at lower costs.
Bandit is just the latest oil discovery by Chevron and its partners in recent years. Last year, BP announced a discovery at the Far South prospect (57.5% owned by BP and 42.5% by Chevron). These discoveries should give Chevron plenty of fuel to continue growing its production in the region.
Swapping assets in Venezuela
Chevron also has a long history of operating in Venezuela. While many of its peers have left the oil-rich South American nation over the years due to political instability, Chevron has grown its oil output by about 200,000 barrels per day since 2022.
The company had been looking to complete a deal to bolster its operations in the region. It's now doing so through an asset swap with the country's national oil company, PDVSA. Under the terms of the deal, Chevron will receive an additional 13.21% interest in their Petroindependencia joint venture (JV), increasing its stake to 49%. In addition, another JV, Petropiar, has received the rights to develop the adjacent Ayacucho 8 area in the Orinoco Oil Belt of Venezuela. In exchange, Chevron will hand Venezuela its 60% and 100% interests in two offshore gas licenses, as well as its 25.2% interest in the Petroindependiente JV.
Overall, the deal expands Chevron's heavy oil position in two joint ventures. It adds Ayacucho 8, which is a producing asset near Petropiar. That proximity enhances its ability to develop that resource. The swap puts the company in a stronger position to achieve its goal of boosting its oil production in Venezuela by 50% within the next two years. The company's JVs with PDVSA currently produce about 260,000 barrels per day, about a quarter of Venezuela's output.
A high-octane oil stock
Chevron reached an inflection point this year, which is fueling a sharp rise in its free cash flow. There's more grow coming, with the oil giant expecting to deliver 10% compound annual free cash flow growth through 2030 at $70 oil. Meanwhile, these new growth drivers will add even more fuel to its long-term growth engine. While its share price is already up by more than 20% this year, Chevron could have a lot further to run as its growth engine kicks into high gear, making it still look like a compelling buy even after the war-fueled surge.
