While the artificial intelligence theme remains attractive, investors have become increasingly cautious as the company's financial performance continues to lag its ambitious growth narrative. Although BigBear.ai is making progress in expanding its AI platform and winning new contracts, several near-term concerns have weighed on sentiment.
BBAI has underperformed other industry players, such as Palantir Technologies Inc. PLTR and C3.ai, Inc. AI, over the past month.

Why Is BigBear.ai Stock Under Pressure?
The biggest concern is the company's lack of meaningful revenue growth. First-quarter 2026 revenues came in at $34.4 million, essentially unchanged from the prior-year quarter. While management attributed the performance to lower activity on certain Army programs offset by contributions from the Ask Sage acquisition, investors were expecting stronger organic growth given the booming AI market.
Profitability also remains elusive. Although it narrowed net loss year over year, BigBear.ai still reported a quarterly net loss of $56.8 million and adjusted EBITDA of negative $9.9 million. The company continues to spend aggressively on product development, sales expansion and marketing, suggesting profitability could remain some distance away.
Operating expenses are moving in the wrong direction. SG&A expenses climbed sharply due to acquisition-related amortization, legal costs and investments in expanding the sales organization. Research and development spending also increased as BigBear.ai continues building new AI capabilities. While these investments may support long-term growth, they are weighing on near-term earnings and cash generation.
Another concern is the company's dependence on government spending. A large portion of BigBear.ai's business comes from U.S. federal agencies, making contract awards dependent on procurement cycles, budget approvals and government priorities. Even though management remains optimistic about future opportunities, delays in contract timing can create earnings volatility.
These factors help explain why investors have taken a more cautious stance despite the strong enthusiasm surrounding AI stocks.
What Could Bring the Stock Back on Track?
Despite recent weakness, BigBear.ai's operating momentum remains encouraging.
The company secured several meaningful contract wins during the quarter, including a classified intelligence contract with an approximate ceiling value of $53 million, airport security deployments at Chicago O'Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth, new Shipyard AI contracts and additional Ask Sage customers, including NASA, the Army Intelligence and Security Command and the Naval Research Laboratory. These wins reinforce the company's position in mission-critical AI applications.
Equally encouraging is the steady expansion of backlog. BigBear.ai ended the quarter with a backlog of approximately $282 million, up 14% sequentially, providing better revenue visibility. Management also reaffirmed full-year revenue guidance of $135-$165 million, signaling confidence in execution.
The company's product mix is also improving. Recent acquisitions, including Ask Sage and CargoSeer, are expanding BigBear.ai's higher-margin software and generative AI offerings. Ask Sage recently launched a redesigned interface and broadened its commercial availability beyond government agencies, while CargoSeer continues adding AI-powered supply-chain capabilities.
Margins are already showing early benefits from this transition. Gross margin expanded to 34% during the quarter, reflecting a greater contribution from software-based AI platforms rather than traditional services.
The balance sheet also remains a key strength. BigBear.ai closed the quarter with approximately $431 million in cash and investments, giving management ample flexibility to invest in product innovation, expand its AI portfolio and pursue additional acquisitions without immediate funding concerns.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 sales is pegged at $146.6 million, indicating year-over-year growth of 14.8%. In the past 60 days, loss estimates for 2026 have remained stable.

Both BigBear.ai and SoundHound AI provide exposure to the artificial intelligence boom, but not all AI-focused companies are positioned to prosper. That’s why my choice to invest in between the two is SoundHound.
BigBear.ai is highly dependent on government contracts to power its revenue growth. When the Trump Administration cut costs in 2025, BigBear.ai was among the enterprises affected, causing a steep revenue decline. In 2026, it posted sales of $34.4 million, a 1% year-over-year drop despite the contribution of its Ask Sage acquisition. This suggests the company continues to struggle with growing its business amidst the hot AI market.
SoundHound’s Q1 sales soared 52% year over year to $44.2 million. The company has achieved impressive growth through a series of acquisitions, although management stated excluding the impact of acquisitions, Q1 revenue rose 88%. This highlights how its core business is seeing strong customer demand.
SoundHound forecasts 2026 sales to hit between $225 million and $260 million, up from 2025’s $168.9 million. The company’s ability to maintain excellent revenue growth is a key factor behind why I think it’s the superior artificial intelligence stock to buy over BigBear.ai.

If adoption of frictionless security accelerates, this market could become an increasingly meaningful contributor to the company's future growth.

Corporate leadership teams usually don't ask much of their shareholders beyond approving board slates and executive compensation packages. But the board of BigBear.ai (NYSE: BBAI) just made a big ask of its shareholders, who responded with a move that could come back to bite them.

Running on empty
BigBear.ai is a defense company that has created AI-powered systems for various government entities, including facial scanners used at ports of entry and secure battlefield operations networks. Unlike fellow AI defense and security company Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR), BigBear has had limited success expanding beyond its niche into larger markets.
About the only thing BigBear has grown is its outstanding share count. The company has increased the number of shares outstanding by more than tenfold over the past five years, from 46 million in 2021 to over 477 million today. Those shares have been used for acquisitions, executive and board compensation, and debt retirement.
But BigBear was slowly running out of shares to issue. Its Certificate of Incorporation limited it to issuing only 500 million shares in total, with less than 23 million remaining. That's why the board made its big ask.
Double or nothing
At the most recent annual meeting, shareholders were asked to vote on an amendment to double the number of shares the company was authorized to issue from 500 million to 1 billion. The vote easily succeeded 89% to 10%.
On one hand, the company will likely need some of those shares soon. At BigBear's current share price of $3.53 per share, it had just $81 million in shares available on its old authorization. Even if you added the entire $100.7 million of cash on the company's balance sheet, that's just $181.7 million, not even enough to make another acquisition the size of its recent modest Ask Sage acquisition, which cost $250 million.
The increase in share authorization at least buys the company some time and gives management the flexibility to consider its options.
A rough ride
That said, any further share issuances will result in further share dilution... and the stock is already down more than 60% since it went public via a SPAC merger in 2021.
Meanwhile, BigBear's net losses have grown, it's been burning ever more cash, and its revenue has increased only 13.5%. That's a sharp contrast to Palantir, which has grown revenue, net income, and operating cash flow by triple- or quadruple-digit percentages during roughly the same time frame.
The new share authorization may be used to make strategic acquisitions that complement the company's offerings and allow it to tap into new markets. On the other hand, we haven't seen any evidence that the 10x growth in share count over the last five years has moved the needle. There's little reason to believe the company has been waiting on this authorization to execute some game-changing master plan.
Until I see a coherent explanation from BigBear's management about how they plan to leverage their recent acquisitions and this new authorization into a coherent business strategy, I'll stay as far away from this bear as I would from a real grizzly.

Palantir's valuation has been the primary reason behind its underperformance. However, shares of BigBear.ai Holdings (NYSE: BBAI), which are significantly cheaper than Palantir, have met with the same fate. Like Palantir, BigBear.ai also offers AI tools that enterprises and business customers can use to make decisions and predict outcomes. The company's solutions are used in border security, defense and intelligence, and supply chain applications.

However, BigBear.ai stock is down 37% so far this year. However, its 12-month median price target of $5 points to potential upside of 36%. So, should investors consider buying this beaten-down stock in anticipation of a turnaround? Let's find out.
BigBear.ai's financial performance is improving in 2026
BigBear.ai had a forgettable 2025. Its revenue fell by 19% last year to $127.7 million. Additionally, the company's gross margin fell by 17 percentage points in the fourth quarter last year due to low-margin contracts.
BigBear.ai notes that the majority of its revenue comes from federal government contracts. As a result, its revenue is dependent on the timing of government contracts, their funding, and budgets. The company's revenue decline clearly indicates that these factors can severely impact it. However, BigBear.ai has gotten off to a much better start in 2026.
Its revenue dropped just 1% in Q1 to $34.4 million. What's more, the company's gross margin increased by almost 13 percentage points to 34%. However, the improved performance was driven by the contribution from Ask Sage, which BigBear.ai acquired in December 2025. BigBear.ai spent $250 million on this acquisition to enhance its presence and capabilities "across defense, intelligence, and other highly regulated environments."
BigBear.ai notes that Ask Sage's generative AI products and software platforms have higher margins. So, the company seems well-placed to deliver a stronger margin performance in 2026. Also, BigBear.ai recorded new contract wins worth almost $75 million in Q1. This encouraged management to maintain its full-year revenue forecast of $135 million to $165 million, with the midpoint implying a 17% jump in its top line this year.
Will BigBear.ai's improving growth profile translate into stock price upside?
BigBear.ai's turnaround seems primarily driven by its acquisition of Ask Sage. So, it remains to be seen whether the company can sustain its momentum in 2027 once the inorganic boost from Ask Sage fades.
Analysts are projecting $159 million in revenue for BigBear.ai next year, indicating that its top-line growth could slow to mid-single digits. Given that this AI stock is trading at 12 times sales, a significant premium to the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite index's sales multiple of 5.4, it needs to do much better to justify its premium.
So, even though the median price target points to a nice jump in BigBear.ai's stock price, the expensive valuation and slow growth could continue to weigh on its shares. That's why investors should consider investing in other fast-growing AI niches, as it seems too early to bet on a turnaround at BigBear.ai.

Both companies face risks and challenges related to improving margins and profitability. However, SoundHound AI may offer higher upside over the long term.
Excluding acquisitions, SoundHound’s automotive and Internet of Things business grew 88% year over year last quarter. In addition to the restaurant industry, it serves many leading companies across the banking, airline, and telecommunications sectors.
BigBear.ai may have significant upside from these low share prices, but it seems to have a narrower market focus in national security, trade, and travel. Revenue has declined since 2021, falling from $145 million to $127 million on a trailing-12-month basis. Investors buying the stock are placing a big bet that the company will land lucrative contracts in the future, but that’s not a guarantee in a competitive market.
Meanwhile, SoundHound is already delivering steady revenue growth. Much of its growth over the last few years has come from acquisitions, but these are strategic deals that expand its capabilities. For example, the acquisition of LivePerson extends its customer base to hundreds of additional enterprise brands.
The main challenge for SoundHound is improving margins. There’s been no clear trend in its net income or free cash flow to indicate when it might turn the corner on the bottom line. The good news is that it is in a solid financial position, with its March 31, 2026, balance sheet showing $215 million in cash and no debt.
