Noteworthy Friday Option Activity: AXP, ALGN, MOH

Bread Financial Holdings’ BFH operating income of $3.14 per share for the second quarter of 2025 beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 69.7%. The bottom line improved 18% year over year. The quarterly results reflected a drop in revenues but higher credit sales.
Behind the Headlines of BFH
Revenues decreased 1.1% year over year to $929 million, primarily due to lower finance charges and late fees resulting from a reduced average prime rate, lower delinquencies, and a gradual shift in risk and product mix, leading to a smaller proportion of private label accounts. The top line also missed the consensus estimate by 0.9%.
Credit sales of $6.8 billion increased 4%, driven by new partner growth and increased general-purpose spending. Our estimate was $6.6 billion.
Average loans of $17.7 billion decreased 1%, primarily due to the macroeconomic environment, which resulted in lower consumer spending, higher gross losses and tighter underwriting standards. Our estimate for the same was $18.1 billion.

Pre-tax pre-provision earnings decreased 5% year over year to $448 million due to lower net interest income.

As of June 30, 2025, cash and cash equivalents were $4.2 billion, up 14.4% from the level of 2024.
As of June 30, 2025, long-term debt and other debt increased 28.7% from the 2024-end level to $1.3 billion.
Tangible book value was $52.21 per share as of June 30, 2025, up 7% year over year.
Return on average equity was 17.5% in the second quarter of 2025. The figure expanded 80 basis points year over year.

In April, it repurchased 1.1 million shares, exhausting the board-authorized share repurchase program of $150 million.

Total revenues net of interest expense amounted to $17.9 billion, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1%. The top line improved 9% year over year in the quarter under review.
Network volumes of $472 billion rose 7% year over year in the second quarter, driven by higher U.S. consumer spending. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.3%. Total interest income of $6.3 billion increased 8% year over year and beat the consensus mark by 0.4%. Provision for credit losses rose 11% year over year to $1.4 billion due to higher net write-offs and net reserve build.
American Express still anticipates revenues to increase between 8% and 10% in 2025 from the 2024 level of $65.9 billion. Management expects EPS in the range of $15-$15.50.

Bread Financial Q2 Earnings Beat, Revenues Miss, Credit Sales Rise

At Holdings Channel, we have reviewed the latest batch of the 22 most recent 13F filings for the 06/30/2025 reporting period, and noticed that American Express Co. (Symbol: AXP) was held by 13 of these funds. When hedge fund managers appear to be thinking alike, we find it is a good idea to take a closer look.
Before we proceed, it is important to point out that 13F filings do not tell the whole story, because these funds are only required to disclose their long positions with the SEC, but are not required to disclose their short positions. A fund making a bearish bet against a stock by shorting calls, for example, might also be long some amount of stock as they trade around their overall bearish position. This long component could show up in a 13F filing and everyone might assume the fund is bullish, but this tells only part of the story because the bearish/short side of the position is not seen.
Having given that caveat, we believe that looking at groups of 13F filings can be revealing, especially when comparing one holding period to another. Below, let's take a look at the change in AXP positions, for this latest batch of 13F filers:

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) raised earnings guidance for the last half of 2025, and American Express (NYSE: AXP) delivered second-quarter revenue that set a new record.
However, it takes more than one encouraging quarterly earnings report to make a great dividend stock. Here's a look at the road ahead of these businesses to see which is likely to deliver the most income to your brokerage account.

Verizon
Last September, Verizon raised its dividend payout for the 18th year in a row. At recent prices, shares of America's largest telecommunications giant offer an attractive 6.3% dividend yield.
Verizon's payout raises have been consistent, but they haven't been anything to write home about. The quarterly payment is up by just 19.9% over the past 10 years.
Verizon's wireless phone business isn't growing fast, but broadband is picking up the slack. Second-quarter wireless service revenue rose just 2.2% year over year, but the company expanded total broadband connections by 12.2% year over year to 12.9 million.
While revenue isn't growing very fast, the array of new tax reforms will make meeting and raising its payout a little easier. At the midpoint of management's guided range, free cash flow is expected to reach $4.74 per share in 2025. That's more than enough to meet and raise a dividend obligation currently set at $2.71 annually.
American Express
American Express doesn't raise its payout as frequently as Verizon. It makes up for its lack of consistency, though, with rapid payout bumps when the time is right.
At recent prices, the credit card network operator offers a minuscule 1.1% yield. This is much lower than Verizon, but rapid payout raises could lead to a higher yield on cost down the road.
Earlier this year, American Express raised its dividend payout by 17%. Over the past 10 years, the payout has soared 183%.
Another global pandemic could lead American Express to pause payout raises, but investors can still expect heaps of profits to come their way in the form of share repurchases. American Express has lowered its share count by 29.4% over the past decade. This makes future payout raises, like the big 17% bump we saw recently, relatively easy to manage.
As one of just four global credit card payment networks, steady growth from American Express is a reasonable expectation. Credit card network fees are annoying, but they're hardly high enough to make using cryptocurrency for everyday purchases an economically sensible option. If this changes, American Express and the other three established networks can easily compete by reducing swipe fees.
American Express recently took a big step toward cementing its competitive position in a shifting cryptocurrency landscape. In June, management announced that the Coinbase One Card will launch on the American Express network.
The better dividend stock to buy now
Choosing the better stock among these two will depend on your time horizon. The dividend growth rate American Express reported over the past decade is outstanding, but the stock offers a very low yield at the moment. If we project the past decade's dividend growth rate forward, investors who begin an American Express position now would receive a yield on cost of around 3.6% in 2045.
Verizon's yield is growing slowly, but investors who don't have more than a few decades to wait around are probably better off with the high-yield telecom stock. Its payout is growing slowly, and the recent cash acquisition of Frontier Communications for $20 billion means the next few payout raises probably won't be large ones.
If we project Verizon's past decade of dividend payout raises forward, investors who start a position now could receive a 9.1% yield on cost in 2045. That makes it a better buy for most income-seeking investors.

It is benefiting from sustained revenue growth driven by new product launches, strategic partnerships and a rebound in travel and entertainment spending.
American Express’ revenues rose 8% YOY in the first half of 2025. Strong cash generation and disciplined capital returns underscore its financial strength. AXP returned $2 billion in 2Q25 through dividends and buybacks. The company expects EPS in the range of $15-$15.50 in 2025.
However, persistently rising expenses continue to weigh on margins. Loan loss provisions remain elevated due to macro uncertainty. A high debt load and increased interest costs further pressure profitability. AXP’s limited exposure to emerging non-card payment channels may constrain future competitiveness. Top Stock Reports for Wells Fargo, Abbott & American Express

Capital One Financial (NYSE:COF) is set to report Q2 2025 results on Tuesday, July 22, marking its first earnings release since completing the landmark acquisition of Discover in May. The all-stock deal created the largest U.S. credit card issuer by outstanding balances and has positioned Capital One as a vertically integrated payments powerhouse with its own network. Although the impact of the merger will not be immediately visible in this quarter’s numbers, we will be watching for updates on integration progress, synergy realization, and strategic direction.

XLF, GS, MS, AXP: ETF Inflow Alert

(RTTNews) - Rakuten announced the launch of the Rakuten American Express Card in the U.S., exclusively for Rakuten members. With the Rakuten Card, cardholders will receive an extra four percent Cash Back on top of what they already earn while shopping on Rakuten's platform of more than 3,500 stores, in-person, or online, up to the first $7,000 of credit card spending each calendar year. Also, cardholders will earn an extra five percent Cash Back on top of the five percent members earn when dining at more than 22,000 Rakuten partner restaurants, totaling 10 percent Cash Back on Rakuten Dining.
Rakuten is partnering with Imprint to power the card program and First Electronic Bank to issue the card through American Express' Agile Partner Platform. The Rakuten Card provides cardholders with access to Amex Offers for shopping, dining and travel, and access to Amex Experiences.

Rakuten Unveils Rakuten American Express Card With Cash Back Rewards

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) Monday closed up +0.14%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.04%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.50%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) rose +0.19%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) rose +0.54%.
Stock indexes mainly settled higher on Monday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting new all-time highs. Stocks found support as the 10-year T-note yield fell by -5 bp to a one-week low of 4.37%. Also, the strength in chip stocks on Monday boosted technology stocks and led the broader market higher. On the negative side, natural gas producers retreated Monday after nat-gas futures fell more than -6% to a 1-week low.

Some favorable corporate news supported gains in stocks on Monday. Block rose more than +7% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the company will replace Hess Corp in the S&P 500 before the opening of trade on Wednesday. Also, Verizon Communications rose more than +4% after raising the lower end of its full-year earnings forecast.
Recent trade news has put some downward pressure on stocks. Last Wednesday, President Trump announced that he intends to send a tariff letter to more than 150 countries, notifying them that their tariff rates could be 10% or 15%, effective August 1. Also, President Trump recently announced that the US will impose 30% tariffs on US imports from the European Union and Mexico, effective August 1. In addition, Mr. Trump said that a 35% tariff on some Canadian products would take effect on August 1, up from the current 25%.
The markets this week will focus on any tariff news along with the announcement of any new trade deals. On Wednesday, June existing home sales are expected to fall -0.7% m/m to 4.00 million. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to climb by +6,000 to 227,000. Also, the July S&P US manufacturing PMI is expected to slip -0.4 to 52.5. Finally, on Thursday, June new home sales are expected to climb +4.3% m/m to 650,000. On Friday, June capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts are expected to increase by +0.2% m/m.
Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 3% at the July 29-30 FOMC meeting and 58% at the following meeting on September 16-17.
The markets are awaiting a heavy slate of quarterly corporate earnings results this week, including Alphabet and Tesla on Wednesday. About one-fifth of the companies in the S&P 500 are expected to report their Q2 earnings results this week. Early results now show S&P 500 earnings are on track to rise +3.2% for the second quarter, better than the pre-season expectations of +2.8% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Also, only six of the eleven S&P 500 sectors are projected to post an increase in earnings, the fewest since Q1 of 2023, according to Yardeni Research.
Overseas stock markets on Monday settled mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.30%. China's Shanghai Composite rallied to a 9.5-month high and closed up +0.72%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 was closed today for the Marine Day holiday.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) on Monday closed up +13 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -4.4 bp to 4.372%. Sep T-notes rose to a 1-week high on Monday, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 1-week low of 4.350%. T-notes rallied Monday on carryover support from last Friday when Fed Governor Christopher Waller said he backs a Fed rate cut at the July 29-30 FOMC meeting. T-notes also have carryover support from Monday's rally in 10-year German bunds to a 2-week high.
European government bond yields on Monday moved lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-week low of 2.611% and finished down -8.2 bp to 2.613%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -7.1 bp to 4.603%.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 2% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at Thursday's policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Strength in chip stocks on Monday supported gains in the broader market. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +2%. In addition, NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), Broadcom (AVGO), Lam Research (LRCX), and Applied Materials (AMAT) closed up more than +1%.
Block (XYZ) closed up more than +7% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the company will replace Hess Corp in the S&P 500 before the opening of trade on Wednesday.
Verizon Communications (VZ) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials after raising the lower end of its full-year earnings forecast to +1% to 3% from a previous estimate of 0% to +3%.
Pinterest (PINS) closed up more than +2% after Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight with a price target of $45.
Dollar Tree (DLTR) closed up more than +2% after Barclays upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight with a price target of $120.
Equinix Inc. (EQIX) closed up more than +1% after Elliot Investment Management said it has built up a stake in the company in an effort to get it to take steps to boost its share price.
Invesco Ltd (IVZ) closed up more than +1% after TD Cowen upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $25.
Natural gas producers retreated Monday after nat-gas futures (NQQ25) plunged more than -6% to a 1-week low. As a result, EQT Corp (EQT) closed down more than -9% to lead losers in the S&P 500. Also, Antero Resources (AR) closed down more than -10%, Expand Energy (EXE) closed down more than -8%, Cheniere Energy (LNG) closed down more than -7%, and Coterra Energy (CTRA) closed down more than -5%.
Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) closed down more than -5% after it refused to pause all shipments of its Elevidys treatment after three deaths were linked to the company's gene therapies.
Molina Healthcare (MOH) closed down more than -3% after TD Cowen cut its price target on the stock to $283 from $369.
American Express (AXP) closed down more than -1% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after issuing $4 billion in debt securities due in four and seven years.
Biogen (BIIB) closed down more than -1% after Truist Securities downgraded the stock to hold from buy.
