However, under-the-radar defense stocks such as AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV) and Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (NASDAQ: KTOS) could deliver better returns because they have higher growth profiles.
AeroVironment's growth is on autopilot
AeroVironment makes small- and medium-sized drones, space-based platforms, directed energy systems, and cyberwarfare and electronic warfare products. Its drones have been battle-tested in Ukraine, and the conflict in Iran will no doubt lead to a call for more drone manufacturing by the U.S. and its allies.
The defense company's shares, while up more than 68% over the past year, are down more than 14% so far in 2026. The impetus for that decline was the company's fiscal 2026 third-quarter earnings report, which disappointed investors.
In the quarter, which ended Jan. 31, AeroVironment lost $0.06 per share, compared to its earnings per share (EPS) of $0.16 in the prior-year period. However, revenue climbed 143% to $4.08 million. That rise was mainly due to its purchase of BlueHalo in May, which helped establish its market presence in larger drones, space technology, and autonomous underwater vehicles. AeroVironment also has a funded backlog of $1.1 billion.
The reason management gave for the bottom-line issues was that it received fewer orders from the U.S. Space Force, particularly from its Satellite Communications Augmentation Resource (SCAR) program. BlueHalo provides antennas for the SCAR program. On the other side, the Defense Department is ramping up orders for the company's drones.
This year, the company is forecasting revenue between $1.85 billion and $1.95 billion, up from just $820.6 million last year, and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of $265 million to $285 million, which would be an increase of 14.5% at the midpoint.
Kratos is there to help the U.S. reload
Kratos Defense & Security Solutions' shares are up more than 15% so far in 2026 and more than 200% over the past year. The San Diego-based company focuses on affordable, rapidly developed military technology, including drones, unmanned systems, satellite and space communications, radar and missile guidance, and missiles.
In 2025, the company reported revenue of $1.35 billion, up 18.5%. In 2026, it is predicting sales of $1.59 billion to $1.67 billion, a 21.4% jump at the midpoint. EPS in 2025 rose 18% to $0.13. That type of growth is what makes the stock so attractive in the long term.
Kratos is in the process of buying Israeli satellite mobile systems company Orbit Technologies for $356.3 million, with the deal expected to close at the end of March. It also just received a $7 million production contract award from an unnamed customer to make a counter-UAS system -- essentially an anti-drone shield that stops threats before they reach their targets.
Great long-term prospects for both companies
It's important to note that, even as comparatively under-the-radar defense stocks, both of these companies have relatively high valuations. However, given their ability to quickly respond to U.S. defense needs, both are likely to see double-digit percentage revenue growth over the next few years.
Because they are relatively small companies, their stocks are likely to experience more volatility, but their willingness to expand through acquisitions and their sales of high-margin technology speak well for their long-term prospects.

2 Under-the-Radar Defense Stocks That Could Double as Military Budgets Surge

U.S. stock markets closed mixed on Wednesday as the U.S.-Israel attack on Iran showed no signs of de-escalation. Crude oil prices remained elevated due to severe supply concerns from the Middle East. Earnings reports and key inflation data came in mixed and failed to enthuse market participants. The Dow and the S&P 500 ended in negative territory while the Nasdaq Composite managed to finish in the green.
How Did The Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) tumbled 0.6% or 289.24 points to close at 47,417.27 after a choppy session. At intraday high, the index was up nearly 5 points. Notably, 24 components of the 30-stock index ended in negative territory while six ended in positive territory.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite finished at 22,716.14, rising 0.1% owing to the good performance by corporate bigwigs. At intraday high, the tech-laden index was up 180.61 points and at intraday low, the index was down nearly 95 points.
The S&P 500 fell 0.1% to finish at 6,775.80. At intraday high, the index was up 0.4%. All 11 broad sectors of the broad-market index ended in the negative territory. The Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) was down 1.3%.
The fear gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) was down 2.8% to 24.23. A total of 17.79 billion shares were traded on Wednesday, lower than the last 20-session average of 20.09 billion. Decliners outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by a 1.84-to-1 ratio. On the Nasdaq, a 1.38-to-1 ratio favored advancing issues.
Crude Oil Prices Remain Elevated
The geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East remained heightened. Iran continued to retaliate against the U.S.-Israel joint attack and the largest crude oil supply line through the Strait of Hormuz remained heavily disturbed.
The 32 countries of the International Energy Agency (IEA) agreed to release 400 million barrels of crude oil to normalize global oil supply. This marked the largest such action in IEA’s history. Moreover, OPEC said that Saudi Arabia has also ramped up oil production.
Despite these measures, the U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures surged more than 4% to settle at $87.25 per barrel. The global benchmark — the Brent futures — climbed 4.8% to settle at $91.98 per barrel.
Mixed Earnings Results
The global RDBMS giant Oracle Corp. ORCL reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.79 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5.29% and surged 21% year over year in dollar terms and 16% in constant currency.
Revenues beat the consensus mark by 1.77% and climbed 22% in USD and 18% in cc year over year to $17.2 billion, driven by explosive growth in cloud infrastructure as Oracle continues to establish itself as the destination of choice for AI workloads.
Defense equipment manufacturer AeroVironment Inc. AVAV came up with quarterly adjusted earnings of $0.64 per share, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.68 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.3 per share a year ago. Quarterly revenues of $408.05 million missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 13.73%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $167.64 million.

Economic Data
The Department of Labor reported that the consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.3% in February, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The metric for January was 0.2%. Year over year, the headline CPI advanced 2.4% in February.
The core CPI (excluding volatile food and energy items) rose 0.2% in February, lower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 0.3%. The metric for January was also 0.3%. Year over year, the core CPI advanced 2.5% in February.

Analysts forecast the maker of military drones would earn $0.72 per share on sales of $483.9 million in its fiscal Q3 2026. In fact, AeroVironment earned only $0.64 per share, and sales fell far short of expectations: $408 million.

AeroVironment Q3 earnings
On the surface, this seems pretty bad news -- but it wasn't all bad. Despite "missing" on sales, AeroVironment nonetheless managed to grow its sales 143% year over year.
Less encouraging is the news on profits. AeroVironment not only missed on earnings in Q3. And what it did "earn" was only pro forma profit. When calculated under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), AV's result for Q3 was actually a net loss of $3.15 per share.
Year to date, AV has racked up losses of $241 million, and its free cash flow is negative $220 million.
Is AeroVironment stock a sell?
So sales are surging, but profits are nowhere to be seen. How should investors react to this?
On the one hand, continued sales growth seems certain. Management noted it's got a book-to-bill ratio of 1.6 so far this year (which foreshadows more strong sales growth ahead). Guidance is for about $1.9 billion in total sales through the end of this fiscal year, more than twice AV's total sales last year.
There are two problems with this: First, AV's entire guidance range is below analysts' year-end forecasts. Second, it's not enough revenue to turn AV profitable. GAAP losses for the year are still forecast to be at least $4.10 per share, and potentially as bad as $4.44 per share.
To me, AV stock looks like a sell.

KTOS Stock Outperforms Industry: What Should Investors do Now?

Ondas Inc. ONDS recently announced a merger agreement with Mistral Inc. Mistral is a U.S.-based defense prime contractor that has supported U.S. military, federal and public safety programs over the past few decades. Under the agreement, Mistral will merge with a subsidiary of Ondas while continuing to manage its existing contracts. The merger is anticipated to conclude in the second quarter of 2026.
Mistral is a prime contractor on U.S. Army and USSOCOM uncrewed and autonomous platforms procurement vehicles. Mistral brings U.S.-based manufacturing, assembly, integration and quality assurance capabilities to Ondas’ operations, supporting program execution and compliance with the country’s defense sourcing requirements. Mistral has a wide-ranging exposure, including advanced mission equipment integration, survivability and mobility enhancements, unmanned systems procurement, defense electronics and lifecycle sustainment services.
The company currently develops autonomous aerial and ground platforms through its Ondas Autonomous Systems segment. Combining these with Mistral’s infrastructure, the company aims to deliver integrated autonomous solutions for defense, homeland security and public safety applications.
Management highlighted that the transaction “aligns” with the company’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in U.S. defense procurement. Ondas is seeking structured participation in multi-year Department of Defense contract vehicles and “program-of-record opportunities” from just standalone system deployments.

AeroVironment AVAV is one of the key pure-play beneficiaries of rising global demand for military drones and its biggest competitive moat is the strategic ties with the U.S. and allied governments. It recently won a three-year contract worth $97 million from the U.S. Army to develop a next-generation sensor testing system. Before that, AVAV clinched a delivery order from the U.S. Army worth $186 million for Switchblade 600 Block 2 and Switchblade 300 Block 20 explosively formed penetrator loitering munition systems.
In December 2025, AVAV delivered two Joint Light Tactical Vehicle-mounted C-UAS laser weapon systems to the U.S. Army under the second increment of the Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser program.
Red Cat Holdings RCAT is witnessing solid demand from defense and government clients and expanding program wins. Through its subsidiary Teal Drones, the company develops small unmanned aircraft systems tailored for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
Given the increasing demand for its solutions, the company is also sharpening the ability to rapidly scale production to meet mission-critical requirements. On the lastearnings call management emphasized “factories are the moat,” with expanded facilities in Salt Lake City, UT, and Los Angeles, and a newly opened 155,000-square-foot plant in Georgia (large-scale USVs manufacturing). The Georgia facility can churn out more than 500 to 1,000 vessels per year and has a sales showroom and lab in Southeast Florida and a prototype partner in Maine, added RCAT.
