Opendoor Technologies (NASDAQ: OPEN) stock delivered a return of 264% in 2025, but that only tells a small part of the story. The stock hit a record low of $0.51 in June before rocketing higher by more than 2,000%, to reach $10.87 by September, as retail investors whipped up a buying frenzy using social media platforms like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter).
Opendoor operates in the real estate sector, so with the U.S. Federal Reserve cutting interest rates six times since late 2024, a little optimism from investors might be warranted. However, this company faces some structural issues that will be very difficult to overcome, even with a new chief executive officer who's implementing a fresh strategy.

Here's what could be in store for Opendoor stock during 2026.
Opendoor's business model has a concerning track record
Selling a home is an enormous undertaking for most owners, which is why they hire a professional agent to manage the process. But not even the best agents can guarantee a timely sale, which leaves the seller in a state of uncertainty for weeks or even months.
Opendoor operates a direct-buying service. Willing sellers can enter some basic details about their home on the company's website, and they will be presented with a cash offer they can accept or reject. If they choose to proceed, Opendoor can get the deal closed in just a couple of weeks -- no open homes, no uncertain settlements, no fuss.
The company makes money by attempting to flip the house for a profit, which is straightforward when real estate prices are rising but extremely risky when the housing market is weak. After the last housing boom peaked in 2021, companies like Zillow and Redfin shut their direct-buying businesses because they were suffering substantial losses. In fact, Zillow's direct-buying service was losing so much money that it threatened the financial stability of the entire company.
Unfortunately, the real estate market isn't very strong right now. U.S. existing home sales came in at 4.35 million annualized units in December, which remained near a five-year low. Plus, according to data from Redfin, there were 529,770 more sellers than buyers last November, which is near a record high. It's very hard for Opendoor to generate sales in these conditions, especially at favorable prices.
Fortunately, the Fed's interest-rate cuts are steadily reducing mortgage costs, and President Donald Trump is trying to accelerate the decline by instructing government-controlled enterprises Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) and Freddie Mac (Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation) to intervene in the market for mortgage-backed securities. Anything that helps jump-start the housing market will help Opendoor's business.
Opendoor continues to lose money
Opendoor sold 9,813 homes during the first three quarters of 2025, generating $3.6 billion in revenue. However, it only acquired 6,535 homes during the same period, as management deliberately reduced inventory in light of the tough market conditions. Therefore, we already know the company's revenue is likely to shrink in the early stages of 2026.
However, Opendoor's real problem is on the bottom line because it reported a $204 million net loss on a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) basis during the first three quarters of 2025. Even after excluding one-off and non-cash expenses like stock-based compensation, the company's adjusted (non-GAAP) loss still came in at $133 million.
Opendoor had $962 million in cash on hand as of Sept. 30, so it can afford to sustain losses of this magnitude for the foreseeable future. That provides some runway for the company's new CEO Kaz Nejatian, who was appointed in September. He previously held leadership roles at Shopify, PayPal, and LinkedIn and has a plan to turn this ship around.
Nejatian wants to use technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) to speed up the pace at which Opendoor sells each home after acquiring it, which will theoretically leave the company less exposed to housing-market swings. He strongly believes boosting sales volume (and therefore, market share) will give Opendoor more control over prices, which will create a pathway to sustainable profits.
However, I'm not totally convinced. Zillow was an extremely high-volume player in the direct-buying market and still couldn't make the numbers work.
Investors should proceed with caution
The CME Group's FedWatch tool suggests there could be two more interest-rate cuts in 2026, which should bring more buyers into the real estate market. However, it's important to remember that interest rates were near a historic low when Zillow and Redfin exited the direct-buying business, so there's no guarantee lower rates will be a magic bullet for Opendoor.
Opendoor stock has already plummeted by 46% from last year's peak, and I think there could be more downside coming during 2026. Previous stocks that were swept up in social media-fueled retail buying frenzies include GameStop and AMC, and both went on to lose most of their value once the hype settled down. That appears to be the most likely outcome in this case, too.

The new Robinhood
Robinhood is a clever name for a company aiming to help the everyman get richer. It rose to fame with its free trades that attract the novice investor, and some infamy as it became the platform of choice for meme investors who generated some short-squeezes a few years ago.
It has moved past that to become a real player in fintech. Although its core product is its trading platform, it offers a large suite of financial services through its financial ecosystem, including bank accounts and a credit card. Its offerings are innovative, delivering a truly unique experience in its field, and its value-driven business approach appeals to savvy investors. Robinhood is adding new customers at a rapid pace, and it's monetizing them with fee-based products and a premium membership program.
It reported stellar results in the 2025 first quarter. Revenue increased 50% year over year, and although much of it was driven by a 100% increase in cryptocurrency revenue, it was also driven by higher sales of other trading products like equities, which were up 44%, and options, which increased 56%. There were many other highlights, including a 44% increase in deposits annualized over the past 12 months and a 14% increase in net interest revenue. Net income was up 114% from last year.
Funded customers increased 1.9 million, or 8%, to 25.8 million, and average revenue per user increased 39% to $145. It added 550,000 gold members, or 1.5 million year over year to nearly double last year's figure. Gold members pay $5 a month or $50 annually and get perks like 3% matching in individual retirement accounts (IRA) and 4% interest on uninvested funds.
Opportunities, risks, and valuation
The company is constantly releasing new products and upgrading its platform. It recently launched a slew of new services including Robinhood Strategies and Robinhood Banking, and it's rolling out more services internationally. It has more plans for the remainder of the year, such as expanding the crypto platform and continuing the banking rollout. It recently announced a new tokenization product for European customers that gives them the opportunity to buy tokens on a blockchain that follows certain U.S. stocks.
Robinhood is taking a fresh and even visionary approach to finance that resonates with a certain demographic, and that bold vision should lead it into many growth areas over the next five years.
However, there are several risks here. The first is the focus on cryptocurrency. That focus is somewhat responsible for Robinhood's meteoric rise over the past year, but it could equally bring the company down to earth if trends change. Investing in Robinhood stock is a big thumbs-up for cryptocurrency. If you have a lot of confidence in crypto trading, Robinhood could be an excellent way to get exposure while investing in a company that has tangible assets. But it comes with volatility.
Robinhood stock is also quite expensive, trading at a P/E ratio of 62 and a price-to-sales ratio of 31. Over the next five years, it could be challenging to keep up growth at that valuation.
If you have a healthy appetite for risk and are a fan of cryptocurrency, you may be interested in taking a position in Robinhood, which could be valued a lot higher five years from now. Investors with a low risk tolerance, however, should sit this one out.

Noteworthy Friday Option Activity: BLDR, AMC, CEG

The pair have been thawing icy relations with a couple of highly successful events.
While these mutually beneficial collaborations are likely to continue, the big picture remains the same.
Over the past few decades, there's been a paradigm shift in how audiences consume entertainment. Many viewers have abandoned broadcast and cable TV in favor of streaming services. This shift has coincided with a secular decline in movie theater ticket sales.
Leading the charge has been Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX). The streaming giant reported over 300 million global subscribers to close out 2024, although the company no longer provides updates on its subscription data. The company's insistence on shorter theatrical windows and "day-and-date" -- the practice of releasing movies to its vast streaming audience on the same day its movies hit cinemas -- caused a long-standing rift between Netflix and cinema operators.

AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE: AMC), the world's largest theater chain, opposed these practices, and CEO Adam Aron has long been one of Netflix's most vocal opponents. However, the past few months have seen a warming of relations, and a couple of successful collaborations suggest the tide has turned.
Let's examine what led to this change of heart and whether it bodes well for the pair in 2026 and beyond.
A meeting of titans
Late last year, executives from Netflix and AMC held a "high-level dialogue" aimed at finding common ground and ways for the companies to work together for their mutual benefit.
KPop Demon Hunters seemed like a good place to start. The Netflix original was already a global sensation, quickly becoming the streamer's most-watched animated movie before ultimately nabbing the title of Netflix's most popular film ever. It had spawned a Billboard No. 1 hit and become the first soundtrack ever with four simultaneous top-10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100.
Netflix had already engineered the highly successful KPop Demon Hunters Sing-Along theatrical event, which sold out more than 1,300 theaters during a special one-weekend event in August, reaching No. 1 at the box office. AMC joined in the festivities during a special Halloween rerelease, capturing more than 35% of all the attendance during that holiday weekend.
On the heels of that success, Netflix and AMC joined forces again to capture the zeitgeist of the streaming giant's global hit Stranger Things. AMC showed the series finale in 231 U.S. theaters, and to say the venture was a success would be an understatement. The event attracted more than 753,000 viewers to AMC cinemas, accounting for roughly half of all moviegoers for the Stranger Things event.
Demand was so high that AMC ended up with "nine times the available seating capacity allocated to Stranger Things than was originally envisioned," as it "repeatedly and exponentially added thousands of additional showtimes," according to a statement.
On the heels of this success, Netflix and AMC are looking for "more enticing projects ... in 2026 and beyond." Aron went on to say, "AMC remains committed to seeking mutually beneficial opportunities to join Netflix's award-winning content with the superb theatrical experience offered day in and day out by AMC Theatres."
The dawn of a new era?
While the success of these events is undeniable, several unresolved issues remain. AMC remains committed to the industry standard 45-day theatrical window, while Netflix continues to push for a shorter 17-day window. This divide was the biggest contributor to the rift in the first place, highlighting the differing priorities of the two companies. AMC is interested in filling seats, while Netflix wants its customers to renew their subscription every month, so it's unlikely the two will meet in the middle.
Indeed, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos have previously said, "Driving folks to a theater is just not our business." Some industry insiders have described the Stranger Things event as "something of an olive branch" to movie theaters, in light of its bid to buy certain assets from Warner Bros. Discovery.
Some theater owners fear that if Netflix acquires Warner Bros., it will shorten the theatrical window to 17 days across the board, dealing a blow to the industry as a whole. In a statement, Netflix said (emphasis mine):
There's been a lot of talk about theatrical distribution, so we want to set the record straight: we are 100% committed to releasing Warner Bros. films in theaters with industry-standard windows. While this hasn't been part of our business model until now, we are looking forward to bringing this expertise from Warner Bros. to Netflix.
So, is the warming relationship between Netflix and AMC a game changer? Based on the available evidence, I'd have to say no. The vastly different business strategies and secular trends will keep them at odds.
While it's good to see these titans working together, I don't see the big picture changing any time soon. While that's good news for Netflix investors, challenges remain for AMC.

Is The Warming Relationship Between Netflix and AMC Theaters a Game Changer Heading Into 2026?

Remember the skyrocketing meme stocks of 2021? Gosh, how time flies.
It has been almost five years since social media posts ignited short squeezes in GameStop (NYSE: GME) and AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE: AMC) shares. From the closing bell on Jan. 20, 2021, to the end of Jan. 27, 2021 (just one week later), AMC's stock spiked 570% higher while GameStop soared 788%.

But the joy didn't last long. AMC's stock is down 98% from that peak, and GameStop has lost 73% as of Dec. 17, 2025. The average analyst recommendation for GameStop is underperform with a price target 41% below the current level. Keep those expected price drops up for a few more years, and there won't be much left.
I hate to say it, but GameStop is starting to look obsolete. When was the last time you bought a video game from a local store instead of just downloading it to your favorite console? GameStop's stock may very well go to zero in the long run.
Amazon is eating GameStop's lunch
On the upside, I can recommend one of GameStop's top competitors for new money in 2026. The same digital industry shift that's destroying GameStop has big winners too. In particular, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) benefits in several ways from the game-download trend.
Amazon Luna: The e-commerce giant has its own cloud-based gaming service -- no discs, no downloads, just run the games on Amazon's servers and stream the experience to your favorite web browser or mobile device.
Prime Gaming: Amazon Prime subscribers have free access to many Luna games and in-game items.
Digital game sales: Amazon sells download codes for Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC games. You get the same product as GameStop's, with no retail footprint needed. It's true that each gaming platform also offers direct downloads, but Amazon helps you organize your gaming buys across many device types.
AWS gaming infrastructure: Amazon Web Services (AWS) powers online multiplayer, game streaming, and patch/update delivery for many major publishers. This way, Amazon profits whether you play on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC.
Twitch: Amazon owns the dominant game-streaming video platform. Twitch also integrates with Prime Gaming for cross-promotion.
E-commerce for hardware: And Amazon is happy to serve if you're looking for consoles, controllers, or accessories (the physical stuff GameStop's brick-and-mortar stores rely on).
Gaming is just a bonus; Amazon is a great buy anyway
And here's the best part. With or without its gaming industry muscle, Amazon stock is a fantastic buy right now.
Amazon's annualized revenue growth has averaged 11.5% over the last three years, with 13% year-over-year jumps in the last two reports. The company generated $10.6 billion of free cash flow over the last year, based on a massive $691 billion in top-line revenues and $120 billion of capital expenses. Those artificial intelligence (AI) data centers won't just build themselves, you know.
This trillion-dollar tech titan is earning its market cap the honest way, with excellent financials and strong growth prospects. Sorry, GameStop, but Amazon is the first place I'd start looking for a buy related to the video game industry.

Opendoor Technologies (NASDAQ: OPEN) remains a top meme stock. Names like AMC Entertainment and GameStop may still get some speculative activity from retail investors, but speculation about a further bull run remains more prevalent with shares in this real estate iBuyer.
Yet, while the stock has held onto most of its meme-related gains, things could play out quite differently in 2026. Why? Mostly, due to a macroeconomic backdrop that could limit the company's turnaround potential.

Why Opendoor experienced "meme mania" in 2025
Meme mania kicked off for Opendoor Technologies last summer. That's when hedge fund manager Eric Jackson began making the bull case for the real estate technology company on social media.
Jackson's bull case was that the company will experience a growth resurgence, as well as figure out a way to monetize its housing market data.
Setting a $82 per-share price target, 100 times what the stock was trading for at the time the meme wave started, Jackson's posts spurred a flurry of retail investor speculation. Within months, shares rallied over 13-fold, to as much as $10.87 per share.
Be careful going into 2026
Opendoor hit double-digit prices in September. That's when the company's co-founders returned to the board and when a new CEO -- Kaz Nejatian, formerly Shopify's COO -- came on board to lead a turnaround . Around this time, one of the co-founders, Keith Rabois, noted in an interview that the company could do without as much as 85% of its employees. Massive layoffs have yet to happen, and excitement about the turnaround has fizzled somewhat.
Shares have only moderately declined from this year's highs, but that's hardly an invitation to buy the dip. 2026 housing market predictions remain mixed at best.
The latest sell-side analyst earnings estimates also still predict significant losses. This suggests that Opendoor may need to raise additional capital, potentially leading to further share dilution. Unless Opendoor's results suddenly improve in the next quarter, "meme mania" could further dissipate. I'd be cautious about buying the stock.

The debunked disruption
Remember when cryptocurrencies were supposed to disrupt credit card giants? Quick and low-fee payments with transaction-tuned cryptos like Litecoin (CRYPTO: LTC), Bitcoin Cash (CRYPTO: BCH), and yes, even Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) popped up at various checkout counters.
Thanks to digital payment processors like Bitpay and CoinGate, you can buy computer parts from Newegg (NASDAQ: NEGG) with Litecoin and AMC Entertainment (NYSE: AMC) popcorn and movie tickets with Shiba Inu (CRYPTO: SHIB) or your preferred stablecoin. Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) still accepts crypto payments, but only in the form of Dogecoin, of course. Elon Musk's favorite coin gets special treatment.
Visa and Mastercard enter the chat
The tables are turning. The credit card veterans see value in encrypted ledgers of transaction data, and are actively building stablecoin-based processing into their payment platforms.
I may never know who started their stablecoin projects first, but Visa got the investor-facing party started in April 2025. Partnering with a Stripe subsidiary called Bridge, Visa cards can be linked to the card user's stablecoin holdings. It's like a traditional debit card, relying on a new type of funds. Visa highlighted this project as a particularly promising product for Latin America, where banking systems can be slow but stablecoin ownership is relatively common.
Mastercard followed suit in June. The company integrated four leading stablecoins in its global settlement systems. This move involved collaborations with stablecoin issuers Circle Internet (NYSE: CRCL), Fiserv (NASDAQ: FI), Paxos, and PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL).
"Consumers and merchants adopt solutions that are convenient, secure and dependable," Mastercard said in the press materials. "We don't see stablecoins disrupting this dynamic -- in fact, they reinforce it."
The ripple effects on Litecoin, Dogecoin, and friends
You may have noticed that Visa and Mastercard aren't charging in with their own bespoke crypto-like payment alternatives, promising to disrupt every stablecoin under the sun. Instead, they are picking partners and teeing up established coins like USDC (CRYPTO: USDC) and PayPal USD (CRYPTO: PYUSD) for widespread usage by consumers around the world.
Both companies underscored the money-moving powers of stablecoins, foreshadowing rivalries with international payments specialist XRP (CRYPTO: XRP). Or maybe they're hoping to acquire XRP's Ripple Labs organization before it goes public. Either way, the border-crossing market is heating up like a crypto-mining rig without a fan.
The payment-focused cryptos mentioned earlier are certainly facing a challenge here. Veterans like Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin need to make it clear that they're built for fast and secure crypto payments. Ad campaigns and exclusive retailer partnerships spring to mind, but I'm not sure their open-source developer communities are prepared for that task.
Shiba Inu and Dogecoin always painted outside the lines, basing their business cases on celebrity tweets and other social media pushes. For all I know, that could be enough to keep the leading meme coins relevant even in the shadow of Mastercard and Visa stablecoin deals.
How to invest in this plot twist
In the end, cryptocurrencies are really just a different accounting method. They're fast and secure, and the right partnerships can tie them into most traditional bank accounts and payment platforms. Innovative financial giants like Visa and Mastercard are almost inevitable participants in this evolved setup with public transaction ledgers behind encrypted firewalls.
So, how should investors play this sea change, even while the whole crypto sector is sagging and perhaps entering the next crypto winter?
It depends, of course. Mastercard and Visa are promising choices, and their stocks are reasonably valued right now. If the stablecoin integrations spark fresh business growth in Latin America and the e-commerce sector, credit card processors could be lucrative holdings over the next few years.
The stablecoins themselves aren't really designed for long-term investments. Sure, they often come with reasonable interest-like reward payouts, but they're more useful as behind-the-scenes tools in trading of cryptocurrencies and other assets. However, stablecoin issuers like Circle and PayPal should benefit greatly from increased usage.
Yes, the big boys of traditional finance are entering the crypto space. But that's not necessarily the end of the story -- heavyweight partners may be just what some of these cryptocurrencies needed. Invest accordingly, preferring stablecoin issuers over the stablecoins themselves, and stay tuned for further news. I'm sure there are plenty of crypto/banking partnerships brewing in the background.

Plot Twist: Credit Card Giants Are Emerging As Crypto Disruptors

The movie theater chain’s leadership is touting its bright future.
This optimism, however, has been circulating for a couple of years now and has yet to be realized.
The COVID-19 pandemic permanently changed the entertainment business in a way that works against movie theaters.
There's little the market loves more than rewarding a turnaround story, and boy, does AMC Entertainment (NYSE: AMC) appear to have one in the works.
That's what CEO Adam Aron seems to believe, anyway. As he commented in the movie theater chain's third-quarter results posted early this month, "We expect the fourth quarter industrywide box office will turn out to be the highest-grossing fourth quarter in six years," adding, "We also continue to believe that the size of the 2026 box office will be dramatically larger than that achieved in 2025."

This is a bullish pep talk, however, that I won't be buying into anytime soon, if ever.
See, we've been hearing this kind of optimism for a while now, none of it to any avail. The theater business isn't just struggling -- it's been permanently damaged. Indeed, the industry as we know it will be lucky to survive at all. Underscoring this bearish argument is the fact that AMC hasn't actually turned a net profit in a single quarter since before the COVID-19 pandemic, and was barely profitable when it was.
Just not something people do like they used to
Cutting straight to the chase, the solidification of the then-still-wobbly streaming business during and because of the coronavirus contagion wiped away much of consumers' remaining interest in the theater experience.
Oh, certainly some films are still best seen on the big screen, and there's no denying plenty of people are still willing to pay for the in-person entertainment experience. The newest Fantastic Four flick released in July, for instance, has domestically sold nearly $300 million worth of tickets (according to numbers from Box Office Mojo). But, by and large, people just aren't feeling it the way they did prior to the pandemic.
The graphic below tells the tale. Although the business has obviously bounced back from its COVID-prompted slump, it's also obviously leveling off at about 30% below its pre-pandemic peak.
What gives? As was noted, the mainstreaming of at-home streaming during and because of the COVID-19 contagion proved consumers are perfectly content to watch feature-length films -- including new releases -- in the comfort of their own homes. The availability of affordable giant-screen televisions around this time only helped, of course. Data compiled by Statista indicates the average TV screen in North American homes is a whopping 55 inches.
And studios are on board with bypassing the silver screen as well, by the way. Vicious, along with Netflix's (NASDAQ: NFLX) suspense thriller A House of Dynamite, are just a couple of recent critically acclaimed films that could have done well in theaters, but were sent straight to streaming platforms instead.
More to the point for interested investors, it's not clear what Aron is seeing on the horizon that will change the industry's trajectory for the better now if it hasn't happened yet.
Possible doesn't mean probable
Sure, anything's possible. Three years removed from pandemic-prompted shutdowns, though, a full rebound of the theater business seems fairly unlikely; if it was going to happen, we'd see at least some clearer evidence of it by now. And given that the recovery thus far has yet to push AMC out of the red and back into the black, it's pretty difficult to have hope here.
