A series of big events today, on what had been expected to be fairly mild in actionablemarket news actually kicked off late yesterday with news that Amsterdam-based GPU creator Nebius NBIS is engaging in an AI infrastructure deal with Microsoft MSFT worth $17.4 billion through 2031. Shares of the former spinoff from Russian tech giant Yandex shot up +49% today.
UnitedHealth UNH was the Dow’s biggest mover today, +8.5%, on news that 78% of its Medicare Advantage enrollees should qualify for bonus payments from the federal government. These include plans rated 4-stars or higher. UNH shares remain down -31% year to date.
Apple’s AAPL iPhone 17 event — today’s unveiling of the slimmer iPhone Air model — failed to prod investors toward buying the stock. Though the sleek design may be a selling point for some customers, the lack of any major enhancements with AI technology, etc. Shares of AAPL were down -1.5% today, even as the Nasdaq closed at new all-time high.
The Dow finished the day up +196 points, +0.43%, while the S&P 500 gained +17 points, +0.27%. The Nasdaq’s record day took it to 21,879, up +80 points on the session, +0.37%. The small-cap Russell 2000 was the only major index to give back recent gains today: -13 points or -0.55%.
Oracle Misses in Q3, Stock Shoots Up +22%
After today’s close, Oracle ORCL reported lackluster earnings in its fiscal Q3 report today: earnings of $1.47 per share just met the Zacks consensus, while revenues of $14.93 billion missed expectations of $15.01 billion. Yet shares have zoomed ahead +22% upon the release as its cloud revenue growth has gone into a new orbit.
Without getting too deep into the weeds, Oracle services excess cloud demand for other Big Tech players, such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, etc. And business has been booming: Cloud Infrastructure grew +55% year over year to $3.3 billion, Remaining Performance Obligations (RPO) backlog gained +359%, and Multi-cloud Database Revenue expanded +1529% from a year ago. These aren’t the high-margin businesses that serve organic Oracle customers, but it’s hard to argue with +1500% growth.
New Jobs Revisions Drop -911K in a Year
Last year, when 12-month revisions to employment numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) came out, it demonstrated a massive disconnect with initial job reportage, to the tune of -818K. (This was subsequently revised to -598K at a later date.) It turns out this extraordinarily high number was not a one-off: today’s 12-month BLS revision was -911K — the largest such revision ever.
This accounted for the year from April 2024 through March 2025, which saw the highest number of jobs reduced per sector in the Leisure & Hospitality space, -176K. Professional/Business Services dialed back job gains by -158K for that time period, Trade Retail subtracted -126K and Trade Wholesale shed -110K. Trade/Transportation/Utilities grew +6600 jobs and Utilities gained +3700 on the revision.
These revisions depict the antiquated method of telephone surveys to gather jobs data. Last month, President Trump fired the Director of BLS because he said the jobs numbers were “rigged.” The White House doubled-down on this sentiment following the data’s release today without mentioning that jobs numbers since March of this year have taken yet another step lower. Trump’s choice to take over as BLS Director is E.J. Antoni, who hails from the right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation.
What to Expect from the Stock Market Tomorrow
The big report we are looking at Wednesday morning is the August Producer Price Index (PPI) — the wholesale side of inflation in the U.S. economy. Headline PPI month over month is expected to come way down to +0.3% from +0.9% reported in July. On core (subtracting volatile food and energy prices) we’re also looking for +0.3% month over month, down from +0.6% the previous month.
Year over year PPI was getting heated up in July: +3.3%, +2.8% on core. With these monthly figures likely to cool, perhaps we’ll see some relief on these year-over-year numbers as well. But 3% PPI inflation is as good a reason as any for the Fed not to have begun making interest rate cuts yet this year. These numbers cooling tomorrow would go a long way to assuage the Fed’s fears.
We can already see there is good reason to cut rates with jobs production now averaging just +70K per month. (And that doesn’t count August’s +22K and June’s -13K.) These levels do not likely cover the number of retirees among the U.S. labor force per month, to say nothing of the effects that ICE raids are having on domestic employment. The Fed meets on monetary policy a week from today, with a new interest rate level reporting next Wednesday at 2pm ET.

Oracle Misses in Q3, Gains +22% - Plus Jobs Revisions & More

(RTTNews) - Tech giant Apple Inc. (AAPL) on Tuesday launched its next-gen iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, featuring a new redesigned body, powered by the latest A19 Pro processor, and sporting a more advanced camera system.
The company also unveiled the thinner iPhone Air and a low-cost iPhone 17.
The iPhone 17 Pro features a lightweight, aerospace-grade aluminum chassis with an Apple-designed vapor chamber for enhanced performance. The new design features a larger battery.
Both devices feature Super Retina XDR displays in 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes, supporting 120Hz ProMotion and achieving up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The camera system features three 48-megapixel sensors, a main, ultra-wide, and telephoto lens. The Pro Max introduces the longest optical zoom ever on an iPhone at 8x.
Apple also announced the iPhone Air, which it described as the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever at 5.6mm. Built with a titanium frame and Ceramic Shield protection on both sides, the device runs on the A19 Pro. It sports a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display, a 48MP Fusion camera, and the same Center Stage front camera found in the Pro models.
The iPhone Air is available in space black, cloud white, light gold, and sky blue.
The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 with 256GB of storage, while the Pro Max begins at $1,199 and goes up to 2TB. Both are offered in deep blue, cosmic orange, and silver. Pre-orders open September 12, with availability beginning September 19. The iPhone Air, a 5.6mm-thin titanium model, will start at $999, and the standard iPhone 17 at $899.

Pre-market futures continue their upward drift this morning, after closing politely higher Monday and setting a new all-time closing high on the tech-heavy Nasdaq. The Dow is up another +37 points at this hour, the S&P 500 is +6 points and the Nasdaq is +45 to 23,851. Only the small-cap Russell 2000 is down a marginal -0.4 points at this hour, though it leads the major indexes over the last five trading days.
We’re not seeing a ton of new data out ahead of the opening bell — certainly nothing like last week’s Jobs Week — but we do look forward to Apple’s AAPL release of the iPhone 17 later today. Expectations there for are an ultra-thin model and some charging/battery upgrades, but not much in the way of AI technology.
Small-Business Optimism Ticks Higher
Early this morning, the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index for August came in half a point higher to 100.8, remaining above the 52-year average of 98.0. Over two-thirds of small business owners find conditions to be either excellent (+14%) or good (+54%), while only 4% think they are poor. Labor Quality was the top problem among small business owners in the survey, with 32% having open jobs they are unable to fill.
FuelCell Energy Beats Estimates in Q3
Small-cap renewable energy server FuelCell Energy FCEL posted big positive surprises in its fiscal Q3 report out this morning, reporting a loss of -95 cents per share for a +40% beat, on revenues of $46.7 million, which amounts to +97% sales growth year over year. Shares are up +2.6% in pre-market trading, though still down -50% year to date.
What to Expect from the Stock Market Today
Aside from the aforementioned Apple news on the updated iPhone, a year’s worth of jobs revisions from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is expected after today’s open. These adjustments will take into account all BLS employment tallies from April 2024 to March 2025. Analysts anticipate revisions to be in the several hundreds of thousands.
Recall a year ago, only weeks ahead of the 2024 General Election: BLS jobs revisions came in a whopping -818K, adjusting downward the accomplishments of the labor market over the prior year. This year, BLS reports have entered the political realm thanks to President Trump’s suggestion that previous jobs numbers were not “real.” So aside from whatever the BLS finds, expect commentary from the White House today, as well.
We also look forward to fiscal Q1 earnings from Oracle ORCL after today’s close. Expectations are for +5.76% earnings growth to $1.47 per share in the quarter, on +12.8% revenue growth from a year ago to $15.01 billion. The Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) Oracle is looking for its second-straight earnings beat, following two quarters of slight misses.
Also reporting earnings this afternoon are microchip designer Synopsys SNPS and meme-stock extraordinaire GameStop GME. GameStop is projected to bring in huge +1800% positive earnings growth, while Synopsys expects a mere +12% in earnings growth year over year.

Small Business Index Ticks in Higher

A recent antitrust court ruling involving Google's search business largely favored its parent company, Alphabet.

The importance of data to artificial intelligence means the court's decision is a boon for Alphabet's rivals in the race for AI dominance.
For months, a dark cloud hung over shares of Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) after a federal judge declared its Google search engine business an illegal monopoly. Investors were left waiting for the penalties associated with the court ruling.
Finally, on Sept. 2, the cloud was lifted when the legal repercussions against Alphabet were revealed. And they were far less than what might have happened, such as a forced divestiture of Google's Chrome browser. The tech titan's stock promptly took off, hitting a 52-week high of $235.76 on Sept. 5.

Does this good news for Alphabet investors mean now is the time to pick up shares? Here's a look at where the company stands today.
The latest antitrust ruling's impact on Alphabet
After Alphabet lost the antitrust lawsuit against its Google search engine last year, investors were concerned the presiding judge would impose remedies that could hurt the company's future growth. The U.S. Justice Department sought penalties as far-ranging as selling off Alphabet's Android mobile operating system -- but that won't happen.
Instead, the judge ruled Alphabet will be subject to restrictions that are unlikely to dramatically alter its business. These include prohibiting it from entering into exclusive agreements with partners, such as Apple and Samsung Electronics, which made Google products the default in their offerings. Even so, that doesn't prevent the partners from sticking with the search giant as long as exclusivity isn't part of the deal.
Perhaps the most impactful court requirement is for Google to share some of its search data with competitors. Data is the new gold in today's digital world, particularly for its importance to artificial intelligence (AI).
AI introduces a new threat to Google's search dominance. With AI, Microsoft's Bing search engine can now respond to consumer searches with greater comprehensiveness and accuracy. The court's data-sharing requirement will help Microsoft and other competitors strengthen their AI models.
AI's boost to Alphabet's business
Despite the implications, the court's decision on data sharing may not blunt Alphabet's AI success. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the company's second quarter revenue jumped to $96.4 billion from $84.7 billion in 2024.
Contributing to this is Google's search usage, which grew year over year in Q2 because of new AI features, according to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Consequently, Google's Q2 search sales rose 12% year over year to $54.2 billion.
The company's cloud computing business, Google Cloud, is another AI beneficiary. Its Q2 revenue was $13.6 billion, a strong 32% increase from the prior year's $10.3 billion, as businesses adopted Google Cloud's AI offerings.
Alphabet's AI app, Gemini, is also seeing phenomenal adoption. In Q2, the app had more than 450 million monthly active users, with daily requests up by more than 50% compared to Q1.
Alphabet's wide-ranging integration of AI across its businesses, and resulting success, give it a strong leg up against competitors that may benefit from gaining access to Google search data. This is why the court requirements from the antitrust case may not impact its business in a material way any time soon.
Other factors to consider with Alphabet stock
Although Alphabet avoided significant harm to its business in the Sept. 2 court ruling, another major antitrust case looms. The conglomerate's advertising business was deemed an illegal monopoly earlier this year, although the penalties in this case have yet to be determined.
Alphabet plans to appeal the ruling, which could tie up the case in court for years And ultimately, as seen in the search monopoly ruling, penalties might be mild.
With this in mind, is now the time to buy Alphabet stock, especially since it recently hit a new high? Certainly, share-price valuation is a consideration, and that can be evaluated using its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio in comparison to competitors Meta Platforms and Microsoft.
Both Meta and Microsoft battle Alphabet in digital advertising and AI, while the latter also competes in search and the cloud computing space.
As shown in the chart, Alphabet's P/E multiple has been on the rise in recent months, but it's still lower than Meta's and Microsoft's. This suggests Alphabet's shares are a better value than those of its rivals.
In August, I recommended buying Alphabet stock. It's less of a bargain now than it was then, but shares are still worth picking up. With its strong start to AI, ongoing revenue growth across key parts of its business, and lower valuation compared to its competitors, Alphabet is a worthwhile investment to buy and hold over the long run.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.17%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.23%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.58%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) are up +0.18%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) are up +0.68%.
Stocks are climbing today on the prospect of a more accommodative Federal Reserve. The 10-year T-note yield fell to a 5-month low today of 4.05%. The markets have fully priced in a 25 bp rate cut by the Fed at next week's FOMC meeting and priced in a 10% chance for a 50 bp rate cut. However, this week's US Aug CPI and PPI reports will show how much room the Fed has to cut interest rates and support the job market. Stocks fell last Friday after the weaker-than-expected US Aug payroll report sparked concerns that the Fed was falling behind in supporting a rapidly cooling US labor market.

Weaker-than-expected trade news from China is negative for global growth prospects after China's Aug exports rose +4.4% y/y, weaker than expectations of +5.5% y/y. Also, Aug imports rose +1.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of +3.4% y/y.
Market focus this week will be on any trade or tariff news. On Tuesday, the BLS will release annual benchmark revisions to US payrolls in the year through March. On Wednesday, Aug PPI final demand is expected to climb +3.3% y/y, unchanged from July, and Aug PPI ex-food and energy is expected to ease to +3.5% y/y from +3.7% y/y in July. On Thursday, Aug CPI is expected to climb to +2.9% y/y from +2.7% y/y in July, and Aug CPI ex-food and energy is expected to increase +3.1% y/y, unchanged from July. Also, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall by -3,000 to 234,000. On Friday, the University of Michigan Sep consumer sentiment index is expected to slip -0.2 to 58.0.
The markets are now pricing in a 13% chance of a 50 bp rate cut at the upcoming FOMC meeting on Sep 16-17, versus the previous expectations of a zero chance of that 50 bp rate cut. After the fully expected -25 bp rate cut at the Sep 16-17 meeting, the markets are now discounting an 81% chance of a second -25 bp rate cut at the Oct 28-29 meeting, up from a 54% chance as of late Thursday. The markets are now pricing in an overall -76 bp rate cut in the federal funds rate by year-end to 3.62% from the current 4.38% rate.
Regarding tariffs, a federal appeals court ruled late last month that President Trump exceeded his authority by imposing global tariffs without Congressional approval, but the court let the tariffs remain in place while appeals continue. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court said, "The statute bestows significant authority on the President to undertake a number of actions in response to a declared national emergency, but none of these actions explicitly include the power to impose tariffs, duties, or the like, or the power to tax." The case now appears to be headed to the Supreme Court for a final decision. According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced.
Overseas stock markets today are higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.57%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.38%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 rose to a 2.5-week high and closed up +1.45%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) are up by +4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down by -2.1 bp to 4.053%. The 10-year T-note yield dropped to a 5-month low today at 4.051% on carryover support from last Friday's weak US unemployment report that bolstered the outlook for Fed easing. Supply pressures are limiting gains in T-note prices as the Treasury will auction $119 billion of T-notes and T-bonds this week, beginning with Tuesday's $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes.
Concerns about Fed independence are negatively impacting T-note prices due to President Trump's attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook and Stephen Miran's intention to hold a Fed Governor position while remaining technically in his White House role on the Council of Economic Advisors.
European government bond yields today are moving lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 1-month low of 2.640% and is down -2.1 bp to 2.641%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 3-week low of 4.616% and is down -2.9 bp to 4.615%.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 1% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks are mostly higher today, lifting the broader market. Nvidia (NVDA) is up more than +2% and Meta Platforms (META) is up more than +2%. Also, Alphabet (GOOGL) is up +0.92% and Tesla (TSLA) is up +0.88%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) is up +0.77%, and Amazon (AMZN) is up +0.73%. Apple (AAPL) is a laggard, down -0.15%.
Chip stocks are climbing today to provide support to the overall market. Broadcom (AVGO) is up more than +4% and added to last Friday's +9% surge to lead chip stocks higher and gainers in the S&P 500 on news that the company is teaming up with OpenAI to make artificial intelligence accelerators. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) is up more than +2% after the stock received a 30-day upside catalyst watch at Citigroup. In addition, KLA Corp (KLAC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Marvell Technology (MRVL), ARM Holding NV (ARM), and Applied Materials (AMAT) are up more than +1%.
AppLovin (APP) is up more than +10% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock will replace Caesars Entertainment in the S&P 500 before the start of trading on September 22.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) is up more than +11% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock will replace MarketAxess Holdings in the S&P 500 before the start of trading on September 22.
Rapport Therapeutics (RAPP) is up more than +171% after reporting positive topline results from its RAP-219 treatment for focal onset seizures.
Forward Industries (FORD) is up more than 67% after receiving $1.65 billion in cash and stablecoin commitments for a private investment in public equity offering to fund a Solana-focused digital asset treasury strategy.
EchoStar (SATS) is up more than +20% after SpaceX's Starlink agreed to buy wireless spectrum from the company for about $17 billion.
Premier Inc. (PINC) is up more than +8% after Patient Square Capital was said to be exploring an acquisition of the company.

Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) has been a fantastic investment opportunity for investors over the years. The company owns the world's No. 1 search engine, Google Search, and generates revenue from its growing cloud computing unit Google Cloud as well as through the sales of equipment such as smartphones. This has helped the tech giant generate billions of dollars in earnings -- and the stock price has advanced more than 600% over the past decade, scoring a win for shareholders who have held on for the long haul.
But one thing in particular has prompted some investors to hold back on buying the stock, and that's a U.S. antitrust lawsuit. Last year, in the Justice Department's case against the company, a U.S. district judge ruled that Alphabet operates an illegal Internet search monopoly. To remedy the situation, the department recommended a breakup of Google -- and one of the possibilities was the sale of Google Chrome.

Though Alphabet stock has advanced, the case still weighed on the stock's potential as some investors worried about a dismantling of the company's valuable search business. Last week, though, that worst-case scenario was avoided. In fact, Alphabet scored a "monster win," according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. Still, after Alphabet's double-digit gain this year, is it too late to get in on this top tech stock? Let's find out.
Alphabet's antitrust troubles
So, first a quick look at the troubles Alphabet faced up until a few days ago. As mentioned, investors feared the technology powerhouse would have to break apart its Google unit, damaging its market position and growth prospects. Alphabet's ownership of an entire ecosystem of products and services allows it to operate more efficiently and share resources across these platforms, from Google Chrome to YouTube, for example.
On top of this, the idea of a breakup put into jeopardy Alphabet's deal with Apple that's allowed Google to be the search engine of choice on the iPhone. It's important to remember that Alphabet's Google Services business represents 85% of revenue -- this is thanks to advertising across Google platforms -- so any potential disruption of its current form could be highly destructive.
That's why last week's court ruling was fantastic news for Alphabet shareholders: The court said Alphabet wouldn't have to divest Google Chrome or its Android operating system, and that "plaintiffs overreached in seeking forced divestiture of these key assets." Instead, Alphabet must share search data with its competitors to level the playing field.
Ives raises his Alphabet price target
Wedbush's Ives, a technology bull, said this is a "monster win" and "removes a huge overhang on the stock," according to a CNBC report. Ives also increased his price target on the stock, which currently trades for about $232, to $245.
So now let's return to our question: This is great news for Alphabet shareholders -- but if you haven't yet bought the stock or if you aim to add to your position, is it too late to buy? After all, even though the antitrust case might have put the brakes on share performance, the stock still has advanced nearly 50% over the past year.
Here, it's important to consider valuation. In spite of the gains, Alphabet trades for only 23x forward earnings estimates, making it the cheapest of the Magnificent Seven stocks.

What valuation suggests
This valuation suggests Alphabet still has plenty of room to run, even in the near term. And in the long term, there's even more reason to get excited about this company. Alphabet, thanks to the court ruling, now can continue to grow its search business, and on top of this, the company has demonstrated that it could be a winner in the AI revolution. Google Cloud is a major provider of AI tools and services, and this has helped the unit's revenue climb in the double digits in recent quarters. And with an AI market forecast to reach into the trillions in a few years, Alphabet is well positioned to see more growth.
All of this means that even after Alphabet stock's recent climb, it still remains a fantastic tech player to buy and hold -- and now you can do so without worrying about any potential upset from the antitrust case.

Dan Ives Says Alphabet Just Scored a "Monster Win." But, After Double-Digit Gains, is it Too Late to Buy the Stock?

The future for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) just got a lot less murky thanks to the United States court system. In the monopoly case against Google Search, a judge ruled last year that the business was indeed violating anticompetitive laws in the United States. Since then, there has been deliberation on what the remedies would be to keep fair business practices.
Even though the case was not against Apple, the lawsuit posed a major threat to its cash cow licensing deal for Google Search, which the case mentioned as monopolistic behavior that could be deemed illegal. In what some saw as a surprise ruling, the judge decided on Sept. 2 that it was permissible for Apple to receive these payments from Google Search as long as they are not exclusive deals.

At more than $20 billion in licensing fees a year, this is a huge profit driver for Apple, which is why the stock shot up 4% on the announcement. Here's what the ruling means for Apple and the stock going forward into the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
Software licensing deals
Apple's customer base is a highly lucrative demographic. It has more than 2 billion active computing devices -- ranging from the iPhone to Air Pods -- that skew usage toward the top earners in countries, especially in the West. This is a huge revenue opportunity for mobile application and software developers.
In order to retain its dominance in the search engine market, Google and its now parent company Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) began paying Apple a licensing fee to make Google Search the default search provider on the Apple Safari browser. Including its cut of search revenue that happens on Safari, Apple's payment from Google has grown along with the business and is now reported at $20 billion a year or higher.
Apple's consolidated operating earnings are $130 billion. Even though the company still makes the majority of its profit from selling iPhones, this single fee from Google makes up more than 15% of its annual operating earnings. Along with potentially other licensing deals, it has now been solidified as legal for Apple to receive these payments.
Is Apple falling behind in AI?
Keeping the Google payment likely led to a sigh of relief from Apple shareholders. A ruling in the other direction would have wiped out hundreds of billions in value from Apple's market capitalization and led to a fall in the stock price.
What shareholders should be concerned about today is Apple falling behind in AI. Its branded "Apple Intelligence" products have fallen flat with consumers, and its advanced new hardware tools powered with AI, such as the Vision Pro, have been flops. To make matters worse, Apple has reportedly lost a ton of AI developer talent to the likes of OpenAI, XAI, and Alphabet, which could further leave it behind the curve.
That has led Apple to come back to its old strategy of technology licensing. It is with the same company that makes Google Search: Alphabet. Alphabet's Gemini chatbot is not as popular as ChatGPT today, but Alphabet has the leading infrastructure to scale usage across billions of users given its cloud and semiconductor investments. Along with the court case ruling, news outlets are reporting that a new AI search tool with Siri could be powered by Gemini, although a deal has not been finalized.
The question is: Will Apple receive a payment from Alphabet for this partnership? It is unclear exactly how a deal would work out today given the differences between AI and the traditional search engine market. Building and deploying AI is expensive. If Apple is going to power Siri with Gemini, it may need to foot some of this bill.
What it all means for Apple stock
It is clearly a positive that Apple can still receive $20 billion or more a year from Alphabet. In the long run, a stock will appreciate in price along with its underlying profitability, and if Apple can milk $100 billion in total licensing revenue from Alphabet over the next five years, all the better for the business.
But what should give investors pause is the changing dynamics of the search engine and AI chatbot market. Five years from now, search may be totally upended by ChatGPT or even Alphabet's homegrown Gemini chatbot, which would eliminate the Google Search licensing deal that was just given the go-ahead by the United States court system. With a market cap of $3.5 trillion, $100 billion in earnings over five years is not particularly relevant for anyone considering buying Apple stock today.
What Apple needs to figure out -- and what investors need to think about -- is how to be the go-to personal computing hardware for the AI era. Whether through new computing form factors or licensing deals with the AI software makers, Apple's earnings should grow over the long term if it can be the No.1 way people access both the internet and AI.
Uncertainty abounds over whether Apple can make this happen. With an expensive-looking price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 36, the stock is not reflecting this uncertainty. It is probably best for investors to avoid buying Apple stock for the time being.
