US weekly initial unemployment claims unexpectedly fell -4,000 to a 3-month low of 217,000, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of an increase to 226,000.
The US June Chicago Fed national activity index rose +0.06 to -0.10, stronger than expectations of -0.15.
US June new home sales rose +0.6% m/m to 627,000, weaker than expectations of +4.3% m/m to 650,000.

Last Wednesday, Mr. Trump announced that he intends to send a tariff letter to more than 150 countries, notifying them that their tariff rates could be 10% or 15%, effective August 1. As an update, Mr. Trump late Wednesday said, "We'll have a straight, simple tariff of anywhere between 15% and 50%," an indication that the floor for tariffs is rising and suggesting that he would not go below 15%.

However, T-notes recovered from their worst levels Thursday after June new home sales rose less than expected and the US manufacturing PMI unexpectedly fell to a 7-month low, dovish factors for Fed policy.
European government bond yields on Thursday finished mixed. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 1-week high of 2.711% and ended up +6.3 bp to 2.702%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -1.3 bp to 4.622%.
The Eurozone July S&P manufacturing PMI rose +0.3 to a 3-year high of 49.8, right on expectations. The Eurozone July S&P composite PMI rose +0.4 to 51.0, stronger than expectations of +0.1 to 50.7 and the strongest level in 11 months.
Eurozone Jun new car registrations fell -7.3% y/y to 1.010 million units, the largest decline in 10 months.
The German Aug GfK consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell -1.2 to a 4-month low of -21.5, weaker than expectations of an increase to -19.3.
As expected, the ECB kept the deposit facility rate unchanged at 2.00%. The ECB said, "Inflation is currently at the 2% medium-term target," and the economy has so far proven resilient, but the environment remains uncertain due to trade disputes.
ECB President Lagarde said the economic risks to the Eurozone are tilted to the downside, and a stronger euro could dampen inflation more than expected.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 21% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks, sans Apple and Tesla, rallied Thursday and supported gains in the broader market. Nvidia (NVDA), Amazon.com (AMZN), and Microsoft (MSFT) closed up more than +1%. Also, Alphabet (GOOGL) closed up +0.88%, and Meta Platforms (META) closed up +0.17%.

United Rentals (URI) closed up more than +8% after reporting Q2 revenue of $3.94 billion, above the consensus of $3.90 billion, and said it was adding $400 million to its stock buyback program.

American Airlines AAL stock was down as much as 10% in Thursday morning's trading session despite pleasantly exceeding Q2 top and bottom-line expectations.
This comes as the largest domestic airline carrier gave a cautious outlook, reinstating but narrowing its full-year EPS guidance amid ongoing uncertainty in travel demand.
That said, American Airlines stated it has moved past the brunt of the economic impact, which begs the question of whether AAL shares are too cheap to ignore after dropping more than 30% this year to around $11.

American Airlines Q2 Review
Reporting Q2 sales of $14.39 billion, American Airlines’ top line slightly expanded from $14.33 billion in the comparative period and edged estimates of $14.28 billion. Thanks to disciplined cost control, which was aided by lower fuel costs, American Airlines' Q2 earnings of $0.95 per share comfortably surpassed expectations of $0.79 by 20%, although this was down from EPS of $1.09 a year ago.
Although weaker cross-border travel demand has been a concern that could weaken the outlook for most airlines in correlation with higher tariffs, American Airlines received a boost from strong international and premium cabin demand, especially in the Atlantic markets, where passenger unit revenue rose 5% year over year.
Joining Delta DAL and United UAL Airlines, which reported Q2 results earlier in the month, American Airlines also received a margin boost from loyalty program growth, seeing a 7% jump in Active AAdvantage accounts and a 6% increase in spending on co-branded credit cards.

Notably, American Airlines reinstated but lowered its full-year earnings guidance, expecting adjusted fiscal 2025 EPS to range from a loss of $0.20 to a profit of $0.80, with a midpoint of $0.30. Stocks Gain on Tech Earnings and US Labor Market Strength

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.08%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.67%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.18%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) are up +0.08%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) are up +0.20%.
Stock indexes are mostly higher today, with the S&P 500 posting a new all-time high. Alphabet is leading technology stocks higher after the company reported better-than-expected Q2 revenue, citing strong demand for its AI products. Stocks maintained their gains on signs of resilience in the US labor market, following the unexpected decline in weekly initial unemployment claims to a 3-month low.

On the negative side, Tesla is down more than -8% after reporting its biggest revenue decline in at least ten years and CEO Musk warning of a "rough patch" for the company for the next year or more. Also, IBM is down more than -9% to weigh on the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting weaker-than-expected Q2 software revenue. In addition, signs of weakness in US manufacturing activity are bearish for stocks after the July S&P US manufacturing PMI fell -3.4 to 49.5, weaker than expectations of 52.7 and the weakest level in 7 months.
US weekly initial unemployment claims unexpectedly fell -4,000 to a 3-month low of 217,000, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of an increase to 226,000.
The US June Chicago Fed national activity index rose +0.06 to -0.10, stronger than expectations of -0.15.
The markets are awaiting President Trump's August 1 deadline for trade deals to avoid high tariffs. Last Wednesday, Mr. Trump announced that he intends to send a tariff letter to more than 150 countries, notifying them that their tariff rates could be 10% or 15%, effective August 1. As an update, Mr. Trump late Wednesday said, "We'll have a straight, simple tariff of anywhere between 15% and 50%," an indication that the floor for tariffs is rising and suggesting that he would not go below 15%.
The markets this week will focus on any tariff news along with the announcement of any new trade deals. Later today, June new home sales are expected to climb +4.3% m/m to 650,000. On Friday, June capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts are expected to increase by +0.2% m/m.
Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 3% at the July 29-30 FOMC meeting and 58% at the following meeting on September 16-17.
The markets this week absorbed a heavy slate of quarterly corporate earnings, with reports from about one-fifth of the companies in the S&P 500. Early results now show S&P 500 earnings are on track to rise +3.2% for the second quarter, better than the pre-season expectations of +2.8% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Also, only six of the eleven S&P 500 sectors are projected to post an increase in earnings, the fewest since Q1 of 2023, according to Yardeni Research.
Overseas stock markets today are higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.05%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.65%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 climbed to a new 1-year high and closed up sharply for a second session by +1.59%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) today are down -10 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +5.0 bp to 4.430%. T-notes are under pressure due to reduced safe-haven demand for government securities, as optimism grows that the US will reach more trade deals with its trading partners following the clinching of a deal with Japan on Wednesday. Also, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that the US and EU are closing in on a trade deal. Losses in T-notes accelerated after weekly US jobless claims unexpectedly fell to a 3-month low, a sign of labor market strength that is hawkish for Fed policy.
European government bond yields today are moving higher. The 10-year German bund yield is up +3.9 bp to 2.678%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +1.6 bp to 4.651%.
The Eurozone July S&P manufacturing PMI rose +0.3 to a 3-year high of 49.8, right on expectations. The Eurozone July S&P composite PMI rose +0.4 to 51.0, stronger than expectations of +0.1 to 50.7 and the strongest level in 11 months.
Eurozone Jun new car registrations fell -7.3% y/y to 1.010 million units, the largest decline in 10 months.
The German Aug GfK consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell -1.2 to a 4-month low of -21.5, weaker than expectations of an increase to -19.3.
As expected, the ECB kept the deposit facility rate unchanged at 2.00%. The ECB said, "Inflation is currently at the 2% medium-term target," and the economy has so far proven resilient, but the environment remains uncertain due to trade disputes.
ECB President Lagarde said the economic risks to the Eurozone are tilted to the downside, and a stronger euro could dampen inflation more than expected.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 27% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Alphabet (GOOGL) is up more than +2% after reporting Q2 revenue ex-TAC of $81.72 billion, stronger than the consensus of $79.60 billion.
West Pharmaceutical Services (WST) is up more than +27% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 net sales of $766.5 million, well above the consensus of $726.1 million, and raising its full-year net sales forecast to $3.04 billion-$3.06 billion from a previous forecast of $2.95 billion-$2.98 billion, stronger than the consensus of $2.96 billion.
Labcorp Holdings (LH) is up more than +9% after reporting Q2 revenue of $3.53 billion, better than the consensus of $3.49 billion, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS estimate to $16.05-$16.50 from a previous estimate of $15.70-$16.40.
T-Mobile US (TMUS) is up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q2 total postpaid net customers of 1.77 million, above the consensus of 1.34 million, and raising its full-year postpaid net customers forecast to 6.1 million-6.4 million from a previous estimate of 5.5 million-6.0 million, better than the consensus of 5.94 million.
ServiceNow (NOW) is up more than +5% after reporting Q2 subscription revenue of $3.11 billion, above the consensus of $3.04 billion, and raising its full-year subscription revenue forecast to $12.78 billion-$12.80 billion from a previous forecast of $12.64 billion-$12.68 billion, stronger than the consensus of $12.68 billion.
Las Vegas Sands (LVS) is up more than +4% after reporting Q2 net revenue of $3.18 billion, well above the consensus of $2.83 billion.
Tractor Supply Co (TSCO) is up more than +3% after reporting Q2 comparable same-store sales rose +1.5%, stronger than the consensus of +0.44%
LKQ Corp (LKQ) is down more than -20% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS continuing operations of 87 cents, weaker than the consensus of 93 cents.
Dow Inc (DOW) is down more than -12% after reporting a Q2 adjusted operating loss per share of -42 cents, a much wider loss than the consensus of -18 cents.
Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) is down more than -12% after reporting Q2 comparable sales fell -4%, weaker than the consensus of -2.91%, and cutting its full-year comparable sales forecast to 0% from a previous forecast of low single-digits growth.
Tesla (TSLA) is down more than -8% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q2 revenue of $22.50 billion, below the consensus of $22.64 billion, and CEO Musk warning of a "rough patch" for the company for the next year or more.
International Business Machines (IBM) is down more than -9% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q2 software revenue of $7.39 billion, weaker than the consensus of $7.49 billion.

American Airlines (AAL) Q2 2025 Earnings Transcript

Key Points
American Airlines beat on sales and earnings this morning.
Revenues held steady year over year, but profits declined 10%.
American Airlines says it will lose money in Q3, and could lose money for the full year as well.
American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) stock sank 7.2% through 10:55 a.m. ET Thursday despite reporting an earnings beat for Q2 this morning.
Analysts forecast the airline company would earn $0.77, adjusted for one-time items, on $14.3 billion in Q2 sales. In fact, the airline earned $0.95 on sales of $14.4 billion.

American Airlines Q2 earnings
What's bad about that? Combing through the numbers, here's what we find: Earnings as calculated according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) were lower than the adjusted figure of $0.91. This was down 10% from what AA earned a year ago, despite quarterly revenue remaining roughly flat.
So obviously, profit margins declined. But why? Well, fuel costs were lower in Q2 2025 than a year ago, but salaries, wages, and benefits cost 11% more, and landing fees grew 7%. Those were among the biggest changes that stand out.
Is American Airlines stock a sell?
I doubt these costs are what's upset investors today, however. Looming larger are concerns about "macro weaknesses" in the economy that are affecting company guidance.
Although American Airlines management says it doesn't necessarily see a reason to worry right now, it worries anyway -- and after reporting its big Q2 profit, told investors it might lose as much as $0.60 per share in Q3, while full-year results could be as good as a $0.80 per-share profit... or as bad as a $0.20 per-share loss.
That's a pretty wide range of potential outcomes for the year, and the only thing AA seems certain of is that it will definitely lose money in the current quarter. With a market cap of only $7.8 billion but more than $28 billion in debt and losses on the horizon, maybe investors should worry about AAL stock, too.

(RTTNews) - American Airlines Group Inc. (AAL) said it expects a third-quarter adjusted loss per share to be between $0.10 and $0.60. Based on recent booking trends, American expects full-year adjusted earnings per share to be between a loss of $0.20 and profit of $0.80, with a mid-point of $0.30. The company believes the top end of the range is achievable if demand in the domestic market continues to strengthen.
Second quarter earnings came in at $599 million, or $0.91 per share. This compares with $717 million, or $1.01 per share, last year. Excluding items, American Airlines reported adjusted earnings of $628 million or $0.95 per share for the period. Revenue rose 0.4% to $14.39 billion from $14.33 billion last year.
The company ended the second quarter with $38 billion of total debt and $29 billion of net debt. The company ended the second quarter with $12 billion of total available liquidity.
Shares of American Airlines are down 6% in pre-market trade on Thursday.
