Chipotle Stock Falls 38% in a Year: Should You Buy Now or Hold Steady?

McDonald’s Corporation MCD stock has fallen 12.8% over the past three months compared with the industry’s decline of 6.8%. In the same time frame, the S&P 500 has returned 11%.
Investor sentiment has been pressured by concerns about a softer consumer spending environment, rising commodity costs, margin pressures and expectations of slower near-term sales growth. While the fast-food giant continues to gain market share and execute well operationally, Wall Street appears focused on the hurdles that could limit earnings growth in the coming quarters.

Why Has McDonald's Stock Lost Momentum?
A key concern is the continued pressure on lower-income consumers, a customer group that represents an important portion of McDonald’s traffic. Management noted that while higher-income consumers remain resilient, lower-income diners are still reducing spending as they grapple with elevated fuel prices and broader inflation. Although McDonald’s value initiatives have helped recapture some of these customers, demand from this group remains weaker than historical levels, creating uncertainty around traffic growth.
Inflationary pressures are also weighing on investor confidence. Beef prices remain elevated globally, increasing operating costs across the system. The consensus estimate for revenues is pegged at $28.42 billion and $30.08 billion for 2026 and 2027, implying a year-over-year improvement of 5.7% and 5.8%, respectively.

McDonald's Stock Slides 13% in 3 Months: Buy the Dip or Stay Away?

To kick off the launch, the company introduced new Crispy Parm Pan Pizza, available now at participating Pizza Hut locations nationwide. It also plans to offer fan-favorite menu items at throwback value.
Additionally, Hut Originals platform is bringing back its classic BOOK IT! button on June 10 for a free personal pan pizza.

Pizza Hut Launches Hut Originals Platform To Celebrate Food And Fan Memories

(RTTNews) - Yum! Brands Inc. (YUM) announced that its Chief Operating Officer and Chief People & Culture Officer,Tracy Skeans, plans to retire after more than 25 years with the company. Skeans will remain in her current role through late this year, after which she will move into an advisory position.
Skeans' responsibilities will transition to the company's next Chief People & Culture Officer and Chief Scale Officer. Yum! Brands is working to fill both roles. Skeans will assist in the transition in her advisory role through early 2028.
Skeans spent more than 25 years with Yum! Brands and was instrumental in shaping the company's business, culture and leadership, the company said.

A month has gone by since the last earnings report for Yum Brands (YUM). Shares have lost about 6% in that time frame, underperforming the S&P 500.
But investors have to be wondering, will the recent negative trend continue leading up to its next earnings release, or is Yum due for a breakout? Well, first let's take a quick look at its latest earnings report in order to get a better handle on the recent drivers for Yum! Brands, Inc. before we dive into how investors and analysts have reacted as of late.
YUM Q1 Earnings Beat Estimates on Taco Bell Sales and Digital Growth
Yum! Brands delivered first-quarter 2026 results, wherein both earnings and revenues surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.50, up 15.4% year over year and above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.39 by 7.9%. Revenues increased 15.2% to $2.06 billion and topped the $2.01 billion estimate by 2.6%.
Results were powered by Taco Bell’s standout 8% same-store sales gain, while worldwide system sales grew 6% excluding foreign currency translation, signaling steady demand across much of the portfolio.
YUM Starts 2026 With Solid Global Momentum
YUM’s top-line strength extended beyond a single brand. Worldwide same-store sales grew 3% in the quarter, complementing system sales growth and underscoring a consumer environment that remained supportive for the company’s quick-service concepts.
Expansion also contributed. Unit count increased 5% year over year, supported by 1,030 gross new units opened in the quarter, keeping development activity aligned with the company’s long-term growth algorithm.
Yum! Brands Builds on KFC's Scale and Profitability
KFC continued to be a steady growth and cash-generation engine. The division’s restaurant count climbed 7% year over year to 34,332, reflecting broad-based expansion across markets.
Operationally, KFC delivered higher profitability. For first-quarter 2026, revenues from KFC totaled $879 million, up 14% from the prior-year quarter. Our model predicted the metric to increase 13.2% year over year. Comps in the division rose 2% year over year.
Franchise and property revenues rose 13% to $461 million, while operating profit increased 16% to $383 million. Operating margin improved 70 basis points to 43.6%, helped by stronger company-owned restaurant margins of 10.3%, up 100 basis points.
YUM Leans on Taco Bell for Consistent Growth
Taco Bell extended its growth streak with continued brand momentum. The division’s restaurant base increased 3% to 9,021, reflecting ongoing development progress even as the concept remained in a relatively mature stage in the United States.
Financial performance stayed firm. Taco Bell's revenues were $797 million, up 21% from the year-ago quarter's levels. Our model predicted the metric to increase 8.5% year over year. Comps in the segment increased 8%.
System sales increased 10% to $4,394 million, and franchise and property revenues advanced 7% to $251 million. Operating profit rose 16% to $281 million, though operating margin declined 150 basis points to 35.2%, suggesting less favorable cost leverage. The division opened 30 gross new restaurants and U.S. company-owned restaurant margins were 23.9%.
Yum! Brands Sees Pizza Hut Pressure, Habit Improves
Pizza Hut produced mixed results, with global stability masking notable regional divergence. The division’s restaurant count edged up 1% to 19,944, while system sales increased 3% to $3,114 million and same-store sales were flat overall. At Pizza Hut, revenues amounted to $253 million, up 10% year over year. Our model predicted Pizza Hut revenues to increase 1.8% year over year. Comps in the quarter were flat year over year.
Profitability weakened at Pizza Hut, with operating profit down 14% to $64 million and operating margin contracting to 25.4%. Regionally, U.S. system sales declined 6% excluding foreign currency translation, while China system sales rose 8% on the same basis. Pizza Hut opened 346 gross new restaurants.
At Habit Burger & Grill, system sales increased 7% and same-store sales grew 5%, supported by six gross new restaurant openings. In the first quarter, the Habit Burger Grill division’s revenues amounted to $130 million compared with $128 million reported in the prior-year quarter. Our model predicted the metric to be $129.4 million. Comps in the division grew 5% year over year.
YUM Highlights Cash Generation and Notable Items
Below the segment line, YUM reported GAAP net income of $432 million and GAAP diluted earnings of $1.55 per share.
Cash flow remained supportive of capital returns. Net cash provided by operating activities totaled $416 million, while capital spending was $75 million. The company repurchased $185 million of stock and paid $207 million in dividends, with dividends declared at $0.75 per share. On the balance sheet, cash and cash equivalents were $689 million at quarter's end, long-term debt totaled $10.21 billion and short-term borrowings rose to $1.74 billion from $38 million at Dec. 31, 2025.

McDonald’s Corporation MCD delivered stronger-than-expected U.S. momentum during the first quarter of 2026, with comparable sales rising 3.9% as the fast-food giant leaned heavily on its evolving value strategy to attract cost-conscious consumers. This robust performance marked a significant reversal from the 3.6% decline recorded in the prior-year quarter. The company reported that U.S. comps were primarily driven by positive check growth, while global comparable sales also posted a healthy 3.8% gain.
Management credited the quarter's success largely to its newly expanded "McValue" platform, the steady performance of Extra Value Meals (EVMs) and a series of entry-level pricing initiatives designed to protect market share amidst a tightening consumer environment. Affordability remained the cornerstone of this growth, with EVMs maintaining strong operational momentum following their comprehensive relaunch last September. Financial support provided to franchisees under the EVM program tracked below the initial $35 million corporate estimate due to this strong transaction momentum before concluding at the end of March.
Building on this baseline, McDonald's secured unanimous alignment from its franchisees to introduce an expanded "Everyday Affordable Price" (EDAP) tier. This evolved ecosystem features a structured 10-item menu priced entirely under $3 — spotlighted by a nationally advertised $2.50 McDouble and a $1.50 Sausage McMuffin. McDonald's U.S. Comps Jump 3.9%: What's Driving Momentum?

The Board of Directors of CTS has declared a cash dividend of $0.04 per share on outstanding shares of common stock, without par value, to be paid on July 24, 2026, to shareholders of record at the close of business on June 26, 2026.
Cisco has declared a quarterly dividend of $0.42 per common share to be paid on July 22, 2026, to all stockholders of record as of the close of business on July 6, 2026.
Comcast announced that its Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.33 a share on the company's common stock. The quarterly dividend is payable on July 22, 2026, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on July 1, 2026.

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. CMG is broadening its growth agenda with a more visible push into international markets, while continuing to scale its core North American restaurant base. Management reiterated confidence in reaching 7,000 restaurants over time in the United States and Canada — separate from its still early-stage international expansion efforts. In the first quarter of 2026, Chipotle opened 49 new restaurants, including 42 Chipotlanes, and remains on track to open roughly 350 restaurants this year, with approximately 80% expected to include a Chipotlane.
The international opportunity is increasingly drawing attention. In Europe, Chipotle opened a new restaurant at Westfield Stratford, one of the U.K.’s busiest shopping destinations, which management said delivered the strongest opening-day sales in the region’s history. The company now has 29 restaurants across Europe and expects at least one additional opening in Frankfurt this year. Management also noted that European comps remained positive across all countries in the first quarter, supported by closer alignment with North American culinary, training, systems and operating standards.
Chipotle also continues to pursue partner-operated growth in newer markets. The company expects openings in Mexico and South Korea this year, while Singapore is likely to open in 2027. In the Middle East, ongoing geopolitical conditions may delay some openings, resulting in fewer partner-operated restaurants than initially anticipated. However, management stated that its long-term outlook for the region remains unchanged and that it continues to see potential for hundreds of restaurants over time.
For investors, the key issue is whether Chipotle can translate its strong North American unit economics into a broader global growth platform. The company’s international base remains small, but early signs in Europe, planned market entries and partner-operated expansion suggest that global access is becoming a more visible part of the long-term story. As CMG works toward its 7,000-restaurant target, sustained progress outside North America could help broaden the company’s growth profile over time.

McDonald’s Corporation MCD provides a useful benchmark for Chipotle’s global expansion ambitions because of the scale of its restaurant base and development pipeline. Management said the company still feels confident in its ability to reach about 50,000 restaurants by the end of 2027, while emphasizing that new development decisions remain tied to strong returns for both the company and franchisees. McDonald’s is also reviewing its pipeline in light of higher construction costs, indicating that unit growth remains disciplined rather than volume-driven.
Yum! Brands, Inc. YUM is expanding at a much faster global development pace, supported by its heavily franchised model and broad international footprint. The company opened 1,030 new stores in the first quarter of 2026, including 648 KFC locations across 45 countries. KFC reported 7% unit growth in the quarter and management noted that 90% of KFC’s development outside China is contractual through development agreements with well-capitalized franchisees. Taco Bell also continues to build its international base, with growth in Spain, India and the U.K., while management pointed to Canada as the next likely market to reach 100 units.
Compared with McDonald’s and Yum! Brands, Chipotle’s international footprint remains much smaller, but that also leaves more room for expansion if execution improves. McDonald’s has already built a highly scaled global system, while Yum! Brands benefits from a diversified franchise model across KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. Chipotle’s international strategy is still more measured, with Europe, Mexico, South Korea, Singapore and the Middle East representing early-stage opportunities.

Yum (YUM) Q1 2026 Earnings Transcript

Yum! Brands, Inc. YUM delivered first-quarter 2026 results, wherein both earnings and revenues surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Following the results, the company’s shares are up nearly 1% in the pre-market trading session today.
The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.50, up 15.4% year over year and above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.39 by 7.9%. Revenues increased 15.2% to $2.06 billion and topped the $2.01 billion estimate by 2.6%.
Results were powered by Taco Bell’s standout 8% same-store sales gain, while worldwide system sales grew 6% excluding foreign currency translation, signaling steady demand across much of the portfolio.
YUM Starts 2026 With Solid Global Momentum
YUM’s top-line strength extended beyond a single brand. Worldwide same-store sales grew 3% in the quarter, complementing system sales growth and underscoring a consumer environment that remained supportive for the company’s quick-service concepts.
Expansion also contributed. Unit count increased 5% year over year, supported by 1,030 gross new units opened in the quarter, keeping development activity aligned with the company’s long-term growth algorithm.

Yum! Brands Builds on KFC's Scale and Profitability
KFC continued to be a steady growth and cash-generation engine. The division’s restaurant count climbed 7% year over year to 34,332, reflecting broad-based expansion across markets.
Operationally, KFC delivered higher profitability. For first-quarter 2026, revenues from KFC totaled $879 million, up 14% from the prior-year quarter. Our model predicted the metric to increase 13.2% year over year. Comps in the division rose 2% year over year.
Franchise and property revenues rose 13% to $461 million, while operating profit increased 16% to $383 million. Operating margin improved 70 basis points to 43.6%, helped by stronger company-owned restaurant margins of 10.3%, up 100 basis points.
YUM Leans on Taco Bell for Consistent Growth
Taco Bell extended its growth streak with continued brand momentum. The division’s restaurant base increased 3% to 9,021, reflecting ongoing development progress even as the concept remained in a relatively mature stage in the United States.
Financial performance stayed firm. Taco Bell's revenues were $797 million, up 21% from the year-ago quarter's levels. Our model predicted the metric to increase 8.5% year over year. Comps in the segment increased 8%.
System sales increased 10% to $4,394 million, and franchise and property revenues advanced 7% to $251 million. Operating profit rose 16% to $281 million, though operating margin declined 150 basis points to 35.2%, suggesting less favorable cost leverage. The division opened 30 gross new restaurants and U.S. company-owned restaurant margins were 23.9%.
Yum! Brands Sees Pizza Hut Pressure, Habit Improves
Pizza Hut produced mixed results, with global stability masking notable regional divergence. The division’s restaurant count edged up 1% to 19,944, while system sales increased 3% to $3,114 million and same-store sales were flat overall.
At Pizza Hut, revenues amounted to $253 million, up 10% year over year. Our model predicted Pizza Hut revenues to increase 1.8% year over year. Comps in the quarter were flat year over year.
Profitability weakened at Pizza Hut, with operating profit down 14% to $64 million and operating margin contracting to 25.4%. Regionally, U.S. system sales declined 6% excluding foreign currency translation, while China system sales rose 8% on the same basis. Pizza Hut opened 346 gross new restaurants.
At Habit Burger & Grill, system sales increased 7% and same-store sales grew 5%, supported by six gross new restaurant openings. In the first quarter, the Habit Burger Grill division’s revenues amounted to $130 million compared with $128 million reported in the prior-year quarter. Our model predicted the metric to be $129.4 million. Comps in the division grew 5% year over year.
YUM Highlights Cash Generation and Notable Items
Below the segment line, YUM reported GAAP net income of $432 million and GAAP diluted earnings of $1.55 per share. The effective tax rate was 16.2%, and results comprised special items that shaped comparability, including $37 million of charges tied to the Pizza Hut strategic options review and $44 million of income from a litigation settlement.
Cash flow remained supportive of capital returns. Net cash provided by operating activities totaled $416 million, while capital spending was $75 million. The company repurchased $185 million of stock and paid $207 million in dividends, with dividends declared at $0.75 per share. On the balance sheet, cash and cash equivalents were $689 million at quarter's end, long-term debt totaled $10.21 billion and short-term borrowings rose to $1.74 billion from $38 million at Dec. 31, 2025.
