What does Rivian do?
From the top-level view, Rivian is an automaker. Right now, it specializes in making electric SUVs, pickup trucks, and delivery vans, which sets it apart from the pack to some degree. It offers a commercial-focused delivery truck and high-end consumer-oriented SUVs and pickups.
The big problem it faces in its attempt to scale up is that the auto sector is already mature and highly competitive. Rivian is effectively a tiny upstart trying to use a technological innovation to break into the auto business. That's a tall order.
It's made even harder because Tesla has already done what Rivian is trying to do. Before Tesla, electric vehicles (EVs) weren't a mainstream product. Tesla effectively forced the auto world to treat EVs seriously. It built its business from the ground up, starting with high-end sports cars and eventually branching out to mass-market vehicles. Along the way, it built manufacturing facilities and honed its production processes so that it could turn a sustainable profit.
Rivian is a follower, not a leader, and that's OK
Along its growth path, Tesla seemed to revel in being the outsider. Rivian is following a similar playbook but is trying to partner more with other companies. For example, Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) has been an important early customer for Rivian, which builds delivery trucks for the online retailer. This relationship provided Rivian with reliable demand so it could justify building out its manufacturing facility. As it worked to fulfill the delivery truck order, Rivian used some of what it learned to also produce high-end consumer vehicles.
Rivian's early focus was on ramping production up to scale. Rivian is now shifting its focus to streamlining the manufacturing process. The early goal was simply to get to the point where it turned a gross profit, which it achieved in late 2024. A gross profit just means that it generated more revenue from selling its vehicles than it cost to build them. But management knows there are more costs below the gross profit line that will likely keep Rivian's bottom line in the red for years to come.
One effort to resolve the profit issue is Rivian's plan to introduce a mass-market SUV with a more reasonable price point within the year. That will broaden the customer base and, assuming it continues to make progress on the cost front, get the company closer to turning a more consistent profit based on scale of production. This plan is the same type of thing Tesla did, but there's an important difference here, too.
Unlike Tesla, Rivian is looking to partner with other automakers. Its agreement with Volkswagen (OTC: VWAGY) gets it valuable funding to use in building out its production facilities in exchange for providing Rivian's technology, which could someday find its way into Volkswagen cars. So, Rivian has at least two notable corporate partners to lean on as it grows and attempts to become profitable.
Rivian has a long way to go, but it is moving in the right direction
Rivian isn't likely to be an attractive choice for risk-averse investors. It is still in the start-up phase, and execution will be vital. A material enough misstep could lead to a very bad outcome for investors. So far, Rivian has been executing well, and its corporate partners have been pleased, with both Amazon and Volkswagen continuing to provide important financial support.
Despite the company's operational and financial progress, Rivian shares have fallen dramatically from their early highs and have only managed to limp along at a relatively low level. More aggressive investors who believe Rivian will follow the Tesla business model and reach a point where it is a sustainably profitable company might want to jump on Rivian stock now while it is still trading at a low level. Assuming Rivian keeps executing well (and you can handle the risk), it has real potential to be a smart long-term investment decision right now.

QuantumScape Stock Is Skyrocketing: Too Late to Buy?

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has long been the leader in the electric vehicle (EV) market, but several upstarts have also entered the picture in recent years. One of the best-positioned in the domestic market at this time is Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN). Let's consider which stock has a better chance of outperforming the other in the coming years.
More than just EVs
When it comes to the EV market, Tesla has not been fairing well lately. While some of this can be attributed to increased competition in the pure EV space and the rising popularity of hybrid vehicles, much of Tesla's recent sales slump can be laid directly at the feet of CEO Elon Musk. His foray into politics as a major donor to President Donald Trump's campaign and his leadership role at the head of Trump's "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE) angered many liberals, leading to protests and boycotts of Tesla vehicles. More recently, he got into a major spat with Trump that may have alienated him from consumers on the other side of the political spectrum as well.

Right now, the most recent publicly available Tesla sales data is from April, which was before Musk's fight with Trump. The company's sales sank by 16% in the U.S. and plunged by 50% in Europe. Meanwhile, its sales in China dropped by 9%, even as the company offered bigger incentives and discounts in the country than it had in the past and introduced its Model Y vehicle in that market.
With Tesla sales reeling in all of its primary markets, it is pinning its hopes on its robotaxi business. The company just launched the service for paying riders in Austin, Texas. It's a small pilot program so far -- the rides are only taking place within a geofenced area, use of the service is by invitation only, and the vehicles -- all of the Model Ys, not CyberCabs -- are operating for now with a safety monitor in the passenger seat.
Footage has already surfaced of one of those robotaxis driving briefly in a lane designated for traffic going in the opposite direction, among other reports of them violating traffic laws, so questions remain about Tesla's autonomous driving technology. Additionally, there is still the issue of whether the brand damage that Musk has caused will lead to potential customers shunning his robotaxi business, as well.
A drive to profitability
While Musk is seemingly trying to alienate more and more of his potential consumers, Rivian is looking to take advantage. The younger EV maker has done a great job of reducing its costs and is now able to sell its popular R1 luxury SUV at a positive gross margin. It did this by both improving its manufacturing processes and completely overhauling the EV's design. Rivian lowered its material costs, but more importantly, it switched to a zonal architecture, which significantly reduces the number of electronic control units (ECUs) and the amount of wiring in its vehicles.
That zonal architecture technology was also a big reason why the company was able to strike a partnership with (and get a large investment from) Volkswagen. The giant German automaker got access to the technology it wanted while the smaller EV upstart got a cash infusion that will help fund the production ramp-up of its new, lower-priced R2 SUV.
This is a transition year for Rivian as it retools its manufacturing facility in preparation for the launch of the R2 SUV in the first half of 2026. The SUV is expected to start around $45,000, which is a price tag that will put it within reach of a much larger demographic than Rivian's R1 model, which starts at over $70,000 and with luxury trims can exceed $100,000.
In January, meanwhile, Rivian received final approval for a low-cost $6.6 billion Department of Energy loan that will allow it to continue building a new manufacturing plant in Georgia. There was some concern in March that the Trump administration might try to rescind the loan, but nothing definite has happened as U.S. budget negotiations continue. That facility, if given the go-ahead, is now expected to be up and running in 2028, and should help the company gain vital scale in its manufacturing and aid it on its path toward profitability.
Which stock is the better stock?
Both Tesla and Rivian come with risks to investors. Tesla's core business is flailing, and it's pinning a lot of hope on its nascent robotaxi business and other ventures. Rivian, meanwhile, is in the early innings of its journey and still has a long road to traverse before it can achieve profitability.
That said, I prefer Rivian of the two stocks. The brand damage Musk has done to Tesla appears to be immense, and thus far, the company has not proven that its autonomous driving technology is completely safe. At the same time, Tesla's stock price reflects a belief that it will have some success outside of just being an EV maker.
Rivian, on the other hand, has been hitting important milestones such as becoming gross margin positive, and is backed by two large companies: Amazon, for which it makes EV delivery vans, and Volkswagen. Between the backing of those giants and its large federal loan, Rivian should have the cash it will need to further scale up its production and become profitable.

Uber, Lyft to Report Earnings This Week
Later this week, the two ride-share leaders,Uber Technologies (UBER) and Lyft (LYFT), will report first-quarter 2025 earnings.Lyft generates almost its entire revenue from ridesharing and owns roughly a quarter of the ride-sharing market in the United States. Meanwhile, Uber is the dominant player in the ride-sharing industry, with an approximately 75% market share.
Wall Street analysts see Lyft reporting flat EPS with gross bookings growth between 10-14% when it reports earnings on Thursday after the market close. Meanwhile, Wall Street sees Uber earnings of $0.51 per share swinging from a loss last quarter, with gross bookings growth between 17-21%.
Uber, Lyft Expected Moves
Traders can determine a stock’s expected post-earnings move of a stock by analyzing the implied volatility of options prices. The options market currently implies a move of + or – 7.8% for Uber and a juicy 15.6% move for Lyft.
Uber Versus Lyft: Which is the Ride-Share Leader?
Beyond its overwhelming market share, Uber has established itself as the clear leader in the ride-sharing industry over the past year for three reasons:
1. Uber Exhibits Relative Strength Versus Lyft: The most straightforward yet powerful indicator of leadership is price performance. Year-to-date, UBER shares are up a juicy 43%, trouncing LYFT’s 0.5% gains. Uber’s performance is even more impressive considering the volatile market backdrop and the S&P 500’s weak performance.

2. Uber Eats: While Lyft is a one-dimensional company, Uber benefits from a boom in its delivery business, Uber Eats. During the COVID-19 pandemic Uber enjoyed a spike in online order volumes, and, since then, the business has never looked back. In addition, Uber-backed Serve Robotics (SERV) is the leader in autonomous sidewalk delivery robots. SERV is expanding its partnership with Uber Eats to deploy up to 2,000 autonomous delivery robots in multiple US cities by early 2026.
3. Uber’s Robotaxi Partnerships: Uber has inked several key partnerships to build out its autonomous ride-sharing ambitions with companies like Nvidia (NVDA), Volkswagen (VWAGY), and Momenta.
What to Watch: Robotaxi Wars
Savvy investors understand that markets are forward looking. As such, the most critical component to watch in the ride-sharing earnings reports are comments about robotaxis. CNBC recently reported that Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Waymo robotaxi service, which Uber has a partnership with, already provides a mind-boggling 250,000 paid robotaxi rides per week in the United States. Meanwhile, Tesla (TSLA) will kick off its Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, this summer.
Waymo’s scorching hot growth proves that the idea of a robotaxi has transformed from a dream to reality. The big question for Uber and Lyft is, will they adapt to the robotaxi revolution, or will they be cut out of the market? Thus far, Uber’s numerous partnerships prove that the company is unwilling to take chances. While Lyft has done less on the robotaxi front than Uber, the company inked a deal with Mobileye (MBLY) to launch robotaxis this summer.

After years of losses, Uber and Lyft reached “scale” in 2023, swung to profitability, and never looked back.

Over the past few years, Lyft and Uber have consistently delivered bullish earnings surprises. For instance, LYFT has beaten Zacks Consensus analyst estimates for eight consecutive quarters. Meanwhile, Lyft has beat expectations by a margin of 42.11% over the past four quarters.

Uber vs. Lyft Earnings Preview: Robotaxi Ambitions in Focus

Electric vehicle (EV) and tech giant Tesla TSLA has been revolutionizing the charging space. Its Supercharger network has become a critical component of the company’s ecosystem. Last year, Tesla added over 10,000 new Supercharger stalls, expanding into three new countries and growing the global network by 19% year over year to more than 65,000 stalls. In total, the network delivered over 5.2 terawatt-hours of energy — enough to offset 5.5 billion kilograms of CO2 and replace 2.4 billion liters of gasoline.
The rollout of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) has bolstered Tesla’s position, allowing various automakers to access its charging network.The sweeping shift toward Tesla's NACS port is a pivotal moment in the EV charging landscape, promising a more streamlined charging experience for EV drivers. The company also offers home charging solutions like the Wall Connector, which integrates seamlessly with its vehicles, providing overnight charging convenience.
Tesla owns the world’s largest EV charging network, with its U.S. stations outnumbering all rivals combined. This fast-growing, profitable business gives Tesla a major edge as EV adoption expands over the years. Industry experts project that the charging division could bring in $6-$12 billion in annual revenues by 2030, especially as Tesla has opened its Superchargers to non-Tesla drivers, paving the way for a strong, recurring revenue stream in the years ahead.
The Race to Dominate EV Charging Infrastructure
Last month, Chinese automaker BYD Co Ltd BYDDY made a bold claim — charging an EV could soon take as little time as refueling a gasoline car. With its new "Super e-Platform," BYD claims its latest batteries can achieve 400 kilometers (about 249 miles) of range with just five minutes of charging.BYD’s Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV models will feature the Super e-Platform.
Volkswagen Group VWAGY is also rapidly expanding its electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Through subsidiaries like Electrify America and partnerships such as Ionity in Europe, Volkswagen is fast solidifying its presence in the space. Earlier this year, Volkswagen joined forces with XPeng to build super-fast charging networks for zero-emission vehicles in China.
TSLA’s Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates
Shares of Tesla have lost around 41% year to date compared with the industry’s decline of 37.5%.
From a valuation standpoint, TSLA trades at a forward price-to-sales ratio of 7, above the industry. It carries a Value Score of F.

Ford's $4.8B Germany Revamp: Buy the Stock or Stay Away?
Fordis making a bold move to revive its struggling European business. The U.S. legacy auto giant plans to inject up to €4.4 billion ($4.8 billion) into its German operations, aiming to reduce debt and improve competitiveness. Its German arm, Ford-Werke, has €5.8 billion ($6.3 billion) of debt, making this cash infusion crucial. This move comes at a time when the European auto industry is under pressure from rising costs, weak demand and growing competition from Chinese EV makers like BYD Co Ltd.
Ford has been losing money in Europe for years and has been cutting costs to survive. In November, it announced plans to cut another 4,000 jobs by 2027, blaming slow EV demand and fierce competition. Now, with this fresh investment, the company hopes to stabilize its German operations and push forward a multi-year recovery plan.
Ford isn't the only one struggling. Germany's auto biggie Volkswagen is also downsizing and even considering closing plants as it fights to stay competitive. Chinese EV brands are rapidly expanding, forcing traditional automakers to rethink their strategies. Can Ford's capital injection revitalize its European business and should you place your bets on the stock on this development?

Ford's Model e & Blue Units Suffering, Pro Thriving
Ford's segments are facing a mixed outlook. While its Model e and Ford Blue segments are under pressure, Ford Pro remains a bright spot.
The Model e division, Ford's EV unit, continues to struggle. The company lost $5.07 billion in the segment in 2024, even worse than the $4.7 billion loss in 2023. Intense competition, pricing pressure and high investment costs for next-generation EVs are weighing on profits. Ford expects another $5-5.5 billion loss this year, while its closest peer General Motors is cutting EV losses and improving profitability.
The Ford Blue segment, which includes traditional gas-powered vehicles, is also showing signs of weakness. Ford projects 2025 EBIT of $3.5-4 billion, down from $5.3 billion in 2024. Lower ICE vehicle sales, a shift in product mix and foreign exchange headwinds are expected to drag down profits.
However, Ford Pro, the company's commercial vehicle business, is thriving. In 2024, revenues rose 15% to $67 billion, and EBIT jumped from $7.2 billion to $9 billion, with a 13.5% margin. Strong demand for Super Duty trucks and Transit vans, along with growth in software and service subscriptions, is driving this success. Ford's focus on software, technology and services could be a key growth driver moving forward.
F's Strong Liquidity & Generous Dividend Boost Confidence
Ford ended 2024 with $47 billion in liquidity (including $28 billion in cash), providing a strong financial base for its Ford+ strategy. The company is focused on cutting costs. In the second half of 2024, it saved $500 million and targets $1 billion in product design cost reductions for 2025. The automaker offers a more than 6% dividend yield, far above the S&P 500's 1.31% average.
With plans to return 40-50% of free cash flow to investors, its dividend provides stability amid stock volatility. Strong liquidity and cost-cutting efforts could support Ford's turnaround, but market uncertainties remain a key factor.
Tariff Woes & Weak Outlook Could Hurt Ford Stock

Ford’s segments are facing a mixed outlook. While its Model e and Ford Blue segments are under pressure, Ford Pro remains a bright spot.
The Model e division, Ford’s EV unit, continues to struggle. The company lost $5.07 billion in the segment in 2024, even worse than the $4.7 billion loss in 2023. Intense competition, pricing pressure and high investment costs for next-generation EVs are weighing on profits. However, Ford Pro, the company’s commercial vehicle business, is thriving. In 2024, revenues rose 15% to $67 billion, and EBIT jumped from $7.2 billion to $9 billion, with a 13.5% margin. Strong demand for Super Duty trucks and Transit vans, along with growth in software and service subscriptions, is driving this success. Ford ended 2024 with $47 billion in liquidity (including $28 billion in cash), providing a strong financial base for its Ford+ strategy. The company is focused on cutting costs. Ford's $4.8B Germany Revamp: Time to Buy the Stock or Stay Away?

Volkswagen VWAGY has reported a fourth-quarter 2024 earnings per share (EPS) of 67 cents, lower than the year-ago quarter’s EPS of $1. Revenues of $93.21 billion declined 0.7% from the prior-year quarter’s revenues of $93.88 billion, primarily due to a decline in vehicle sales.
For the full year, however, VWAGY’s sales revenues grew 0.7% on a year-over-year basis to $352.8 billion. The automaker reported a 15% year-on-year drop in its 2024 annual operating profit, citing rising costs and restructuring-related expenses, resulting in an operating margin of 5.9%.
The company sold nine million vehicles in 2024, marking a 3.5% drop from 2023. Sales growth in South America was not enough to offset the declines in China. Meanwhile, North American and European sales remained stable. Despite the challenges, Volkswagen saw an 88% increase in orders for battery-electric vehicles in Western Europe.
The company has proposed a 30% cut in dividends, recommending €6.36 per ordinary share and €6.36 per preferred share. The payout ratio will be approximately 30%.
For 2025, VWAGY expects sales revenues to grow by up to 5% compared to 2024. It also anticipates its operating margin to be between 5.5% and 6.5% in the year. VWAGY expects strong growth in 2025 to a battery-electric vehicle share of 10% to 14% globally. The company, however, is also preparing for headwinds in the year, as the Trump administration’s 25% tariffs on auto imports from Mexico and Canada are set to significantly disrupt Volkswagen’s supply chains and increase costs.
Furthermore, increasing competition, especially in the EV space from emerging Chinese manufacturers like BYD and NIO, volatile commodity prices, and emissions-related regulations like the EPA 2027 are also likely to create challenges for the company.
VWAGY’s 2024 Highlights
Volkswagen’s 2024 was marked by noteworthy new model launches and strategic partnerships. The company launched over 30 new models across its brands, including Volkswagen, Skoda, CUPRA, Audi and Porsche. The revamped lineup has improved product quality and, per the company, it has been receiving positive feedback from customers.
In China, VWAGY strengthened its regional tech partnerships with companies like XPeng and Horizon Robotics. The launch of the company’s Hefei innovation hub aided it in accelerating its development time in the country. Meanwhile, in North America, Volkswagen strengthened its position with the revival of the Scout brand, driving growth in the pickup and SUV segments.
Strategic collaborations played a crucial role in the reported year for the company, with partnerships with XPeng for China and Rivian for global markets contributing to innovative advancements in software and electronic architecture. Volkswagen’s software collaboration with Cariad, focused on autonomous driving, infotainment and cloud services, is aimed at ensuring future competitiveness.
The company’s push for electrification also continued in 2024, with EV sales stabilizing and new models like the Porsche Macan, Audi Q6 e-tron and Skoda ELROQ aimed at driving growth in 2025.

VWAGY Q4 & 2024 Earnings: Drop in Profits, EV Growth & Tariff Scare

Electric vehicle (EV) maker and tech titan Tesla TSLA has been off to a rough start this year. After a wild ride that saw the stock surge over 50% following Trump’s election win to hit record highs in December, the momentum has faded fast. It seems like the hype around Musk-Trump ties have cooled and investors are taking a hard look at Tesla’s fundamentals, which don’t look too great now.
TSLA is on a five-day losing streak and closed at $328.50 yesterday—its lowest level since Nov. 15. It’s also the worst-performing Mag-7 stock so far this year, trailing NVIDIA, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta Platforms.

Tesla revolutionized the EV market, much like Amazon transformed retail and Netflix reshaped entertainment. For over a decade, TSLA has been synonymous with cutting-edge innovation and industry dominance. But lately, the magic seems to be wearing off.
Well, much of Tesla’s growth could be linked to its visionary CEO Elon Musk. Once seen as Tesla’s biggest asset, he is now a concern for investors. His polarizing statements, political controversies and divided attention are shaking confidence. Meanwhile, Tesla’s dominant market share is slipping fast in the face of intensifying competition. And investors are taking notice of it.
Musk insists Tesla is entering its next phase of explosive growth, even claiming it could one day be worth more than the next five biggest companies combined. But with the stock tumbling and rivals catching up, investors are starting to wonder whether Tesla’s growth story is running out of juice.
TSLA’s Declining Sales & Shrinking Market Share
Tesla’s sales slump is turning into a major concern. After its first-ever annual delivery decline in 2024, 2025 isn’t looking much better. Sales are falling across key markets, with Europe and China leading the downturn.
In January, Tesla’s sales plummeted 63% in France and 8% in the UK. Registrations in Germany plunged 59%, even as overall EV sales in Germany jumped 54%. That means companies like Volkswagen VWAGY and BMW are grabbing Tesla’s lost market share. Adding fuel to the fire, Elon Musk’s controversial support for Germany’s far-right AfD party has stirred backlash, possibly turning away customers in the region.
Tesla’s sales in China aren’t faring much better. The country is full of home-grown players like BYD Co Ltd BYDDY, NIO, XPeng and Li, among others. As China is a big market for Tesla, stiff competition is likely to erode its share in the country. The company’s sales dropped 11.5% in January, while rival BYDDY surged 48%. The competition is only heating up. BYD just unveiled a major expansion of its AI-powered "God’s Eye" self-driving system, integrating DeepSeek technology even into its sub-$10,000 EVs. Meanwhile, Tesla faces regulatory roadblocks delaying its own Full Self-Driving (FSD) rollout in China. Its FSD program is yet to be launched in China and Europe.
Back home also, Tesla’s dominance is fading. The company’s sales in California took a sharp hit last year, with numbers declining in all four quarters of 2024.TSLA’s U.S. EV market share has dropped below 50%, down from 63% in 2022, as legacy automakers like General Motors GM and Ford F ramp up their EV push, alongside rising threats from Rivian and Lucid.
With intensifying global competition and market share slipping across regions, Tesla’s growth narrative is under serious pressure.
Musk’s Divided Attention Adding to TSLA’s Woes
Musk’s growing list of responsibilities is making investors uneasy. In addition to running Tesla, he’s juggling leadership at SpaceX, Neuralink, X (formerly Twitter) and AI startup xAI. Now, his controversial government role under Trump (as part of the Department of Government Efficiency) adds another layer of distraction.
Concerns over Musk’s focus intensified this week after he made a roughly $100 billion bid to take over OpenAI, which was swiftly rejected. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman countered with an offer to buy X for $9.74 billion. Musk, being Musk, didn’t take it well. He lashed out, calling Altman a "swindler" on social media.
With his attention split and political controversies piling up, investors are questioning whether Tesla is still his top priority.
2025 is a “Prove it” Year for Tesla
With TSLA’s EV sales declining and affordability a growing concern, let’s hope the company sticks to its timeline to launch affordable cars. Tesla is on track to launch one in the first half of 2025 and expand its lineup from there. If executed well, this could reignite Tesla’s demand in price-sensitive markets and it could recapture lost market share.
At the same time, Musk is betting big on FSD and robotaxis, calling them Tesla’s most valuable future segment. Tesla plans to roll out unsupervised FSD as a paid service in Austin this June, with potential expansion to California and other U.S. regions by year-end, pending regulatory approvals.
Tesla Shares Still Too Pricey
Even after its rough run on the bourses so far in 2025, Tesla is the most overvalued stock among its Mag-7 peers. It is trading at a forward 12-month P/E of 124.48X — nearly four times the group’s average forward P/E. With slowing EV growth and execution risks, many investors worry that Tesla’s valuation is way too premium.

How to Play TSLA Now
Tesla’s core EV business is struggling, and while it expects modest growth in 2025, Musk has walked back his 20-30% vehicle growth target. The company also faces trade policy risks. Trump’s 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum could raise vehicle costs, hurting affordability or squeezing margins. If tariffs on Mexico and Canada are enacted, supply chain disruptions could add further pressure. Estimates for TSLA’s EPS have also been revised downward in the past 30 days.

What’s working great for Tesla is its energy generation and storage business, with deployments doubling in 2024 to 31.4 GWh. Musk expects another 50% growth in 2025, making it a key revenue driver.
Currently, Tesla is at a crossroads, and this year will be pivotal for its future. The company needs to prove it can execute its autonomous driving vision and deliver on its affordable EV promise. Investors will closely watch Tesla’s autonomous vehicle (AV) progress, as FSD approvals and robotaxi developments will be key to Tesla’s long-term growth.
