Viking hasn't yet commercialized a drug, but it has a promising candidate in late-stage trials, so it may be very close to the finish line in this valuable market. All of this means the biotech, which specializes in developing candidates for metabolic and endocrine disease, might generate revenue -- and at significant levels -- in just a few years.

Though investors haven't rushed into the stock in recent months, this could soon change. Viking has catalysts just ahead: The company expects to report data from a maintenance dosing study of its weight loss drug candidate in the third quarter, and it aims to launch a phase 3 trial for the oral version of its candidate in the fourth quarter.
Considering this, is Viking stock going to $100? Let's find out.
Blockbuster weight loss drugs
We'll start with some details about Viking's lead candidate, VK2735. This is an investigational dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, much like the popular drugs sold by market leaders Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. These drugs act on hormonal pathways involved in digestion, and as a result, they help control appetite and blood sugar levels. The Lilly and Novo drugs have become blockbusters, and demand has been consistently high for these products -- this is thanks to their efficacy, safety, and ease of use.
Though these pharma giants dominate the space, as mentioned, it is a high-growth market, so there is room for others to enter. And even if a company such as Viking doesn't take leadership -- and I wouldn't expect it to unseat a massive pharma company like Lilly or Novo -- it still could bring in blockbuster revenue. That could be quite a huge step for a young biotech.
And Viking does offer its own twist, differentiating itself from current GLP-1 drugs. At the moment, Lilly offers a dual GLP-1/GIP drug in injectable format and a GLP-1 drug in oral format. Novo's obesity drugs are GLP-1s. (Dual GLP-1/GIP drugs interact with two hormonal pathways, while GLP-1s interact with only one hormonal pathway.)
Injectable and oral formulations
Viking is developing VK2735 in both injectable and oral formats. So, if approved, it would be the first dual GLP-1/GIP drug available in oral format -- and the first dual available in both injectable and oral formats. One big advantage of this is that patients can shift from one formulation to the other -- for example, starting with the oral treatment and then using the injectable for maintenance once they've reached their desired weight.
The phase 3 trial for Viking's injectable is ongoing, and as mentioned, the phase 3 study for the oral formulation is set to begin later this year. We also should see data from its maintenance dosing trial in the months to come. These events could represent catalysts for the stock, which has been known to react to news. When Viking initially announced phase 2 data for VK2735 a couple of years ago, the stock soared more than 100% in one trading session.
So now, let's return to our question: Is Viking heading to $100? It reached a high of more than $94 when it announced phase 2 data in February of 2024. The stock has since given back much of that gain, and it trades today for about $27. But the average Wall Street estimate calls for it to reach more than $92 within the coming 12 months, recovering much of that territory.
The path to $100 represents a jump of more than 200%. I don't see that happening overnight like Viking's massive gain in February of 2024. But a few updates or general good news in the obesity drug market could help it along the way -- so Viking could indeed be heading to $100 in the quarters to come.

Chen brings more than two decades of leadership experience in senior executive roles spanning drug discovery, clinical development, regulatory strategy, and product approvals across multiple therapeutic areas.
Prior to joining Viking, Hubert Chen served as the chief research and development officer at Loyal Animal Health. Previously, he was president and chief scientific officer at Forte Biosciences.
In pre-market activity, VKTX shares were trading at $27.84, down 0.32% on the Nasdaq.

An analyst at the banking giant Truist Financial has an $83 price target on Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX), which is particularly notable given that Viking opened at $28.75 per share on June 8. If it reached that target from that June 8 opening price, that would be a gain of 188%.
The clinical-stage company lacks commercial products, but it has a promising weight-loss drug candidate, VK2735, in phase 3 trials. The rewards for getting the drug to market could be substantial, which the bold price target reflects. But so too are the risks for investors.

The upside potential of Viking Therapeutics
While there has been previous disappointment with trial results from Viking, the analyst from Truist views the company as a differentiated drugmaker in the space. Its injectable version in particular has been highlighted for its potential to provide both weight loss and favorable tolerability, which could help it stand out in a market that's growing but also increasingly crowded.
Researchers at Morgan Stanley project that theglobal marketfor drugs to treat obesity will grow from around $15 billion in sales in 2024 to $150 billion by 2035. Viking Therapeutics is gearing up to grab a slice of that potential cash pile, developing VK2735 in both oral and injectable forms. Currently, phase 3 for the injectable is in process, while the oral solution is expected to enter phase 3 in the third quarter of 2026, which is just around the corner.
The trials for both versions of VK2735 are evaluating its effectiveness as an obesity treatment. But getting it approved for one condition can be just the first step toward maximizing its sales potential, because weight loss drugs are being approved for uses beyond treating obesity. According to Motley Fool research on longevity investing:
GLP-1 drugs are expanding from weight loss into longevity territory. GLP-1s are a class of drugs that includes semaglutide, sold as Wegovy and Ozempic, and tirzepatide, sold as Zepbound and Mounjaro. Originally approved for diabetes and obesity, they have since received FDA [Food and Drug Administration] approval for cardiovascular risk reduction, obstructive sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, and oral obesity treatment.
The upside is there, but so are plenty of risks
The $83 price target from Truist makes Viking Therapeutics an enticing investment idea. But that upside also needs to be paired with the understanding that this stock carries significant risks. As a clinical-stage company, Viking is currently not generating any revenue.
If there are any issues in the trials for either version of VK2735, it will be a huge setback, removing the chance to get a revenue generator out the door. That's particularly important as losses mount. In 2024, Viking reported a net loss of $109 million, which climbed to $359 million in 2025. The company still has some runway, with $603 million in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments as of the end of March. That said, since it had $706 million at the end of 2025, it burned through $103 million in just three months.
There's a potential $150 billion market for Viking Therapeutics to capture, but investors will face significant volatility as they wait for it to receive approval to launch its first commercial product. The biggest risk is that such an approval may not arrive.

Why 1 Wall Street Analyst Thinks Viking Therapeutics Stock Could Soar 188%

In recent years, the pharmaceutical industry has witnessed a remarkable surge in the development of weight loss medications, particularly GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Ozempic and Wegovy. The global obesity rate has nearly tripled since 1975 and is expected to affect over half the population by 2035, per WHO and Goldman Sachs. Theglobal marketfor anti-obesity medications is expected to reach $50 billion by 2030.
As the prevalence of obesity rises, so do related chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, creating a massive market for treatments like GLP-1 drugs. Pioneering GLP-1 treatments, such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound, are now at the forefront of medical advancements in weight management.
Eli Lilly Hovers Around $1 Trillion Valuation
Eli Lilly LLY shares hit a $1 trillion market value, closing at its first record high since November. The stock has surged more than 25% since the March 30 market low and gained over 400% in the past five years, making Eli Lilly one of Wall Street’s biggest beneficiaries of the obesity-drug boom, per Yahoo Finance. Shares surged about 14% over the past one month (as of June 4, 2026).
Reta Fuels Investor Optimism
Much of the recent excitement centers on retatrutide, or “Reta,” Eli Lilly’s experimental next-generation obesity treatment.
Unlike approved drugs such as Zepbound and Mounjaro, which target two hormone pathways, Reta targets three pathways tied to appetite control, blood sugar regulation and energy use.
In the Phase 3 TRIUMPH-1 obesity trial, patients on the highest dose lost an average of 70.3 pounds, or 28.3% of body weight, over 80 weeks. More than 45% of participants lost at least 30% of their body weight, results often associated with bariatric surgery, per the same Yahoo Finance article.
GLP-1 Market Expands Beyond Obesity
Investors increasingly view GLP-1 drugs as a broader metabolic-health platform extending beyond obesity and diabetes into areas such as sleep apnea, kidney disease, cardiovascular risk, liver disease and addiction treatment.
Alongside Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk NVO, Amgen AMGN and Viking Therapeutics VKTX remain key players in the obesity-drug race. Meanwhile, Indian pharma major Lupin bets big on India’s GLP-1 market.
The trend is also affecting industries outside healthcare, including packaged food, alcohol, restaurant and retail stocks, as investors assess how appetite-suppressing drugs may reshape consumer behavior.
Deloitte Warns of a GLP-1 “Bubble”
A new report from Deloitte suggests soaring demand for obesity and diabetes drugs may be creating a “bubble effect” within the pharmaceutical industry, as quoted on CNBC.
Returns on pharmaceutical R&D among the world’s top 20 drugmakers rose to 7% in 2025, driven largely by GLP-1-related assets. Obesity treatments now account for roughly 25% of projected late-stage pipeline sales, surpassing oncology for the first time in 16 years.
According to Deloitte, GLP-1 and obesity drugs now represent about 38% of projected commercial inflows from the 2025 late-stage pipeline. Excluding these drugs, the industry’s R&D return falls sharply to 2.9%.
The report also highlighted concentration risk, noting that only 9% of blockbuster late-stage therapies is expected to generate nearly 70% of total risk-adjusted peak sales.
AI and Health Tech Join the GLP-1 Boom
The obesity-drug trend is also driving growth in health technology. Health-tech startup Signos recently raised $20 million in funding and expanded its partnership with Dexcom, per a CNBC article.
Signos uses AI-powered glucose monitoring technology alongside Dexcom’s continuous glucose monitors to help users manage weight through personalized recommendations tied to food, sleep, stress and lifestyle habits.

Roundhill GLP-1 and Weight Loss ETF OZEM, Tema Heart & Health ETF HRTS and Amplify Weight Loss Drug & Treatment ETF THNR are some of the ETFs that should be closely tracked in light of the above-mentioned scenario.
LLY-heavy ETFs like the iShares U.S. Pharmaceuticals ETF IHE, Harbor Health Care ETF MEDI and VanEck Pharmaceutical ETF PPH should also benefit from this trend.

Inside the GLP-1 Boom: ETF Picks for the Obesity Drug Market

Eli Lilly LLY stock continues to hit new all-time highs as the drugmaker keeps delivering a steady stream of positive clinical updates across its diabetes and obesity portfolio.
LLY shares reached a record high of $1,149.15 on Monday following encouraging clinical results from late-stage studies of Foundayo (orforglipron), its oral GLP-1 therapy, and retatrutide, its investigational triple-hormone receptor agonist that targets the GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon pathways. The latest data presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions further reinforced confidence in the company’s cardiometabolic franchise.
Per data from the phase III ACHIEVE-3 head-to-head study, Foundayo outperformed Novo Nordisk’s NVO oral semaglutide across both blood sugar control and weight-loss measures in adults with type II diabetes (T2D). Patients receiving the highest Foundayo dose achieved greater A1C reductions and significantly higher weight loss than those taking oral semaglutide, while a larger proportion reached normal blood sugar levels.
Foundayo also produced strong results in two additional late-stage studies. In ACHIEVE-2, the drug delivered superior A1C reduction and weight loss compared with AstraZeneca’s Farxiga (dapagliflozin). In ACHIEVE-5, Foundayo significantly improved glycemic control and body weight when added to insulin therapy. Collectively, the data strengthen Lilly’s case for expanding Foundayo into the T2D market, with a regulatory filing planned by the end of the second quarter.
Lilly is also investing heavily in next-generation candidates to maintain continued future profitability. The company recently reported additional phase III results for retatrutide. In the TRIUMPH-1 study, patients receiving the highest dose lost an average of 28.3% of their body weight over 80 weeks, with nearly two-thirds no longer meeting the clinical definition of obesity. Beyond weight reduction, retatrutide demonstrated meaningful improvements in obesity-related conditions, including knee osteoarthritis pain and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. In the TRANSCEND-T2D-1 study, the candidate reduced A1C by up to 2% and delivered weight loss of up to 16.8%, with nearly half of the participants achieving normal blood sugar levels.
The latest findings build on positive top-line data Lilly had already reported from both the TRIUMPH-1 and TRANSCEND-T2D-1 studies earlier this year. Those earlier results established retatrutide’s ability to drive substantial weight loss and glycemic control. At the same time, the newly released detailed analyses further highlighted benefits across multiple obesity-related complications and cardiovascular risk factors. Together, the data continue to strengthen expectations that retatrutide could become one of Lilly’s most important future growth drivers.
Investors remain encouraged by Lilly’s ability to expand its leadership beyond blockbuster products like Mounjaro (T2D) and Zepbound (obesity), while simultaneously advancing next-generation therapies that could support long-term growth.
Lilly's Clinical Edge Continues to Pressure Novo Nordisk
Novo Nordisk remains Lilly’s fiercest rival in the obesity and diabetes markets. Novo Nordisk is also expanding its portfolio through higher-dose semaglutide products, label expansions and pipeline candidates such as CagriSema and amycretin.
However, Lilly’s recent string of clinical wins appears to be shifting competitive momentum in its favor. Foundayo’s superiority over Rybelsus in a direct phase III comparison and retatrutide’s impressive efficacy profile suggest Lilly could continue capturing market share across both diabetes and obesity. LLY now possesses a broad portfolio spanning injectable and oral therapies while also advancing next-generation treatments that may offer greater efficacy than currently available options.
LLY Faces Rising Pressure From Next-Generation GLP-1 Rivals
The obesity space has garnered much of the spotlight over the past year due to the sizeable and still underpenetrated market opportunity.
Smaller biotech firms, like Viking Therapeutics VKTX and Structure Therapeutics GPCR, are also advancing GLP-1–based therapies to challenge the incumbents. Viking Therapeutics’ dual GIPR/GLP-1 receptor agonist, VK2735, is being developed both as oral and subcutaneous formulations for the treatment of obesity. Viking Therapeutics plans to advance oral VK2735 into phase III development for obesity in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Structure Therapeutics’ phase II ACCESS study on its orally administered GLP-1 RA, aleniglipron, demonstrated significant weight loss across all doses. Structure Therapeutics expects to initiate the late-stage program of aleniglipron in obesity in the second half of 2026.
LLY’s Stock Price, Valuation and Estimates
Shares of Eli Lilly have gained 6.9% year to date compared with the industry’s 4.4% growth. During the same time frame, the company has also outperformed the sector but underperformed the S&P 500, as seen in the chart below.

From a valuation standpoint, LLY stock is expensive. Going by the price/earnings ratio, the company’s shares currently trade at 29.05 forward earnings, higher than 17.68 for the industry. However, the stock is trading below its five-year mean of 34.56.

Estimates for Eli Lilly’s 2026 earnings have improved from $35.47 to $35.67 per share in the past 30 days, and estimates for 2027 earnings have improved from $44.50 to $44.56 per share over the same time frame.

Can Eli Lilly's Clinical Momentum Keep the Stock at Record Highs?

Novo Nordisk NVO remains one of the dominant players in the rapidly expanding obesity treatment market. The company markets its blockbuster GLP-1 medicine Wegovy (semaglutide) in both injectable and oral forms. While the injectable version has been a key growth driver for years, NVO broadened its franchise with the approval of the Wegovy pill in late December 2025 and its commercial launch in January 2026. The oral formulation marked a significant milestone for the company by offering patients a needle-free treatment option in a market where demand for convenient obesity therapies continues to rise.
Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity and certain overweight adults with weight-related health conditions when used alongside diet and exercise. It is also approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death, in adults with established heart disease who have obesity or are overweight. These dual benefits have helped differentiate Wegovy from competing therapies.
The Wegovy pill launch has been one of the strongest pharmaceutical rollouts in recent U.S. history. Novo Nordisk reported that the oral formulation surpassed three million prescriptions in just over five months after its launch, equivalent to roughly one prescription being filled every five seconds. The drug's momentum also accelerated over time, reaching its first one million prescriptions in about 12 weeks and adding the next two million in only 10 weeks.
Importantly, the majority of demand appears to be coming from new patients rather than existing GLP-1 users switching therapies. More than 80% of new Wegovy pill prescriptions were written for people who had not previously used a GLP-1 medicine, suggesting the oral formulation is expanding the obesity treatment market and attracting patients who may have been reluctant to start injectable therapies.
The rapid uptake also reflects improved affordability and access. Wegovy is now available through more than 70,000 U.S. pharmacies and multiple distribution channels. Commercially insured patients may obtain the drug for as little as $25 per month through savings programs, while eligible Medicare beneficiaries are expected to gain access through a new program offering a $50 monthly copay beginning in July 2026.
Wegovy Pill Momentum Strengthens NVO Against LLY Rival
The latest prescription milestone arrives as competition with Eli Lilly LLY intensifies. Lilly has emerged as Novo Nordisk’s primary challenger in obesity treatment through its injectable GLP-1/GIP therapy Zepbound (tirzepatide) and its recently launched oral obesity pill, Foundayo (orforglipron). Both companies now offer injectable and oral treatment options, setting the stage for a fierce battle for market share.
Eli Lilly recently strengthened its position by securing broader coverage from major U.S. pharmacy benefit managers, including CVS Caremark. The expanded reimbursement support improves access to both Zepbound and Foundayo and could help accelerate prescription growth. At the same time, Zepbound continues to benefit from data showing greater weight-loss efficacy than Wegovy in a prior head-to-head study.
However, Novo Nordisk's latest prescription figures demonstrate that its first-mover advantage in oral obesity treatment remains meaningful. The fact that the Wegovy pill has already surpassed three million prescriptions and continues to attract large numbers of GLP-1-naive patients suggests that NVO has established substantial early momentum. While Lilly's broader insurance coverage could narrow the gap over time, the rapid uptake of the Wegovy pill provides evidence that Novo Nordisk has successfully expanded patient access, strengthened affordability and built a sizable foothold in the oral obesity market before competition fully intensifies.

Can Wegovy Pill's Rapid Uptake Give Novo Nordisk an Edge Over LLY?

Eli Lilly LLY has pursued a series of acquisitions since early 2026 to strengthen its pipeline and support long-term growth amid intensifying competition in the obesity space. While cardiometabolic health remains its core focus, LLY is deliberately broadening its footprint into other therapeutic areas, such as oncology, neuroscience, immunology and infectious diseases, through targeted deals.
Eli Lilly recently agreed to acquire three privately held biotech companies — Curevo, LimmaTech Biologics and Vaccine Company — in deals worth up to $3.83 billion combined, marking a significant expansion into vaccines and infectious diseases. The acquisitions add assets spanning shingles, bacterial infections and viral diseases, broadening Lilly's growth opportunities beyond its core obesity, diabetes and oncology franchises.
The centerpiece of the strategy is Curevo's phase III-ready shingles vaccine candidate, amezosvatein, acquired in a deal worth up to $1.5 billion. Lilly is also gaining LimmaTech's bacterial vaccine platform, including a candidate targeting Staphylococcus aureus infections, and Vaccine Company's early-stage pipeline led by an Epstein-Barr virus vaccine. If completed, the deals would strengthen Lilly’s long-term growth platform in infectious diseases and extend the company’s aggressive business development activity in 2026.
Earlier this year, LLY announced plans to acquire Ventyx Biosciences in a $1.2 billion deal aimed at expanding its pipeline of oral therapies for inflammatory diseases. Lilly also announced plans to acquire Orna Therapeutics for up to $2.4 billion to strengthen its in vivo CAR-T pipeline. In March, LLY announced its intent to acquire neuroscience biotech Centessa Pharmaceuticals in a $7.8 billion deal. In April, Eli Lilly agreed to acquire CrossBridge Bio for up to $300 million, adding its dual-payload ADC platform to strengthen precision oncology and next-generation cancer therapeutics capabilities. LLY recently also agreed to acquire Kelonia Therapeutics in a deal valued at up to $7 billion and Ajax Therapeutics for up to $2.3 billion to expand its oncology pipeline further.
These acquisitions reflect Eli Lilly’s effort to avoid overreliance on its blockbuster obesity and diabetes franchise, led by blockbuster GLP-1 injections, Mounjaro for type II diabetes (T2D) and Zepbound for obesity and its newly approved oral GLP-1 therapy, Foundayo.
By expanding its portfolio, LLY is diversifying its future revenue streams, reducing concentration risk and creating multiple long-term growth drivers. This broader pipeline strategy could help maximize shareholder value while strengthening Lilly’s competitive position against its obesity rival, Novo Nordisk NVO, in an increasingly crowded market.
LLY’s Increasing Rivalry in the Obesity Space
Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk presently dominate the obesity market. Mounjaro and Zepbound directly compete with NVO’s GLP-1-based semaglutide medicines, Ozempic for T2D and Wegovy for obesity. Like Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk also generates a substantial portion of its revenues from both drugs.
Novo Nordisk launched the oral version of its obesity drug, Wegovy, in January 2026, giving it a first-mover advantage over Foundayo. However, Lilly could narrow the gap rapidly following the April launch of Foundayo.
Smaller biotech firms, like Viking Therapeutics VKTX and Structure Therapeutics GPCR, are also advancing GLP-1–based therapies to challenge the incumbents. Viking Therapeutics’ dual GIPR/GLP-1 receptor agonist, VK2735, is being developed both as oral and subcutaneous formulations for the treatment of obesity. Viking Therapeutics plans to advance oral VK2735 into phase III development for obesity in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Structure Therapeutics’ phase II ACCESS study on its orally administered GLP-1 RA, aleniglipron, demonstrated significant weight loss across all doses. Structure Therapeutics expects to initiate the late-stage program of aleniglipron in obesity in the second half of 2026.
LLY’s Stock Price, Valuation and Estimates
Shares of Eli Lilly have gained 4.7% year to date, whereas the industry has neither posted a loss nor a gain. During the same time frame, the company has also underperformed the S&P 500 but outperformed the sector, as seen in the chart below.

From a valuation standpoint, LLY stock is expensive. Going by the price/earnings ratio, the company’s shares currently trade at 28.68 forward earnings, higher than 16.95 for the industry. However, the stock is trading below its five-year mean of 34.56.

Can Eli Lilly's 2026 Acquisition Spree Diversify Growth Beyond GLP-1s?

Eli Lilly and Company’s LLY stock has risen 14% in the past month, backed by several positive developments. Robust first-quarter 2026 results and a guidance raise were the biggest catalysts. Also last month, Lilly announced that CVS Caremark, a large U.S. pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), expanded insurance coverage for Lilly’s obesity drugs. CVS Caremark announced it will cover Foundayo beginning June 1 and restore broader Zepbound coverage starting in October.
Moreover, in a pivotal phase III obesity study, data showed that Lilly’s next-generation triple-agonist obesity candidate, retatrutide, achieved weight loss of about 28% over 80 weeks. Lilly also announced three acquisitions to build its infectious disease portfolio.
However, though the stock’s bull run will impress investors, those with a long-term investment horizon should make a decision based on the company’s fundamentals after carefully analyzing its strengths and weaknesses.
Strong Growth of LLY’s GLP-1 Drugs Mounjaro and Zepbound
Lilly boasts a robust portfolio of treatments for diabetes and other cardiometabolic conditions, with its cardiometabolic division emerging as the company’s strongest segment. This success is largely attributed to blockbuster demand for its GLP-1 therapies, Mounjaro and Zepbound. Despite a short time on the market, Mounjaro and Zepbound have become key top-line drivers for Lilly, with demand rising rapidly. These therapies account for more than 60% of the company’s total revenues.
Mounjaro is the market leader in new prescriptions within type II diabetes incretin analogs in both the United States and ex-U.S. markets. Zepbound also holds a leading market share in the branded obesity market with nearly 70% share of new prescriptions.
In the first quarter, Mounjaro recorded sales of $8.66 billion, up 125% year over year, while Zepbound’s sales were $4.16 billion, up 80% year over year, driven by increased demand, which offset the impact of lower pricing. The positive trend is expected to continue in 2026.
New Drugs Also Contributing to LLY’s Growth
In addition to Mounjaro and Zepbound, Lilly has secured approvals for several other new therapies over the past few years. These include Omvoh for treating ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, BTK inhibitor Jaypirca for mantle cell lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Ebglyss for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, Kisunla (donanemab) for early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease and Inluriyo (imlunestrant) for metastatic breast cancer. These newly approved drugs are also contributing to Lilly’s revenue growth, with the positive trend expected to continue.
Lilly’s Broad Obesity Pipeline
Lilly is developing several next-generation, more powerful and more convenient GLP-1–based treatments, including oral options and multi-acting candidates.
In early April 2026, Lilly gained FDA approval for its once-daily oral GLP-1 pill Foundayo (orforglipron) for treating obesity. Foundayo, which offers the benefits of GLP-1 therapy in a pill form, can prove to be a commercial game-changer for Lilly. Early launch data for Foundayo has been encouraging, and insurance coverage for the pill is expanding rapidly through major PBMs. Lilly expects to launch Foundayo in most international markets during 2027.
Oral pills will be a more convenient alternative to the currently available once-weekly injectable obesity treatments like Zepbound and Novo Nordisk’s NVO Wegovy. Oral pills may significantly lower the treatment burden and potentially broaden patient adoption versus injections. Oral pills can also be manufactured at scale to meet global demand, which, in turn, can drive billions in additional sales. In addition to obesity and diabetes, Lilly is evaluating Foundayo in six phase III studies for other diabetes and obesity-related diseases.
For the type II diabetes indication, Lilly has filed regulatory applications in several countries, while it expects to file the same in the United States in late second-quarter 2026.
In its GLP pipeline, retatrutide is one of Lilly’s most important late-stage candidates, as it targets three biological pathways — GLP-1, GIP and glucagon — potentially offering greater weight-loss and metabolic benefits than current therapies. Phase III studies have shown strong results in obesity, type II diabetes and knee osteoarthritis pain, positioning the drug as a potential next-generation growth driver. Lilly plans to seek approval for retatrutide in obesity and knee osteoarthritis pain in 2026.
Efforts to Diversify Beyond Obesity & Diabetes
In the past couple of years, Lilly has upped its efforts to diversify beyond GLP-1 drugs by expanding into cardiovascular, oncology and neuroscience areas. In 2026 so far, Lilly has announced six proposed acquisitions — Centessa Pharmaceuticals, Ajax Therapeutics, Kelonia Therapeutics, Orna Therapeutics, CrossBridge Bio and Ventyx Biosciences — to diversify beyond its GLP-1 franchise and strengthen its pipeline in oncology, neuroscience, RNA and cell therapies. It also agreed to acquire three private vaccine developers in May 2026, adding programs targeting shingles, bacterial infections and Epstein-Barr virus. In 2025, it also announced several M&A deals.
Race to Make Oral Obesity Pill Intensifies
The global obesity drug market is projected to grow dramatically, reaching nearly $95 billion by 2030 and potentially $125 billion by 2035, according to Goldman Sachs estimates.
Nordisk had gained approval for an oral version of its obesity drug, Wegovy, in December 2025 and launched the pill in January 2026, which gave it a first-mover advantage over Foundayo. However, Lilly may be able to close the gap quickly now that it has launched Foundayo. Also, Foundayo offers better patient convenience as it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. In contrast, NVO’s Wegovy pill has to be taken on an empty stomach, followed by a waiting period of 30 minutes before eating. However, in terms of side effects, Wegovy has a slight edge as it seems to have a more stable safety and tolerability profile than Foundayo, whose use is associated with some gastrointestinal side effects.
While Lilly and Novo Nordisk currently dominate this space, smaller biotechs like Structure Therapeutics GPCR and Viking Therapeutics VKTX are also developing oral GLP-1 drugs for treating obesity.

Stay Invested in LLY Stock
Lilly has its share of problems. Prices of most of Lilly’s products are declining in the United States. Price is expected to continue to be a drag on top-line growth in the low to mid-teens percentage in 2026. Rising competition in the GLP-1 diabetes/obesity market is a key headwind. Also, sales of late-life cycle products like Trulicity, Taltz and Verzenio are expected to be flat to down in 2026.
However, Lilly is the only drug company with a market value above $1 trillion. Though the stock is not cheap, Lilly is a great stock to have in one’s portfolio, given its significant price appreciation, dominant obesity franchise, strong earnings growth, deep pipeline and bullish analyst sentiment. LLY Rises 14% in a Month: Should You Hold as Obesity Growth Continues?

Investors have long looked to Warren Buffett for investing inspiration. This is because the billionaire, as chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway for 60 years, led the company to market-beating returns over that time period. He did this by investing in industries and companies he knew well, and he put a focus on players with solid competitive advantages.
Buffett retired from the job at the start of this year and handed the responsibility over to Greg Abel -- and this new CEO has promised to follow in the footsteps of the legendary investor. Buffett also remains chairman and has said he's willing to help out however and whenever needed.

Though Buffett and now Abel have constructed and maintained a portfolio that includes many sectors, there is one sector in particular that both of these investing giants are largely ignoring. And here's why investors shouldn't.
The Berkshire Hathaway portfolio
So, first, let's take a quick look at the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio. Its biggest holding, opened by Buffett many years ago, is Apple -- Buffett doesn't generally invest in tech players, but he has made exceptions, for example, opening a position in Alphabet last year. And Abel added to it in the first quarter of this year. At the moment, these are the fund's only tech stocks.
Meanwhile, the portfolio holds a wide range of stocks across finance, consumer goods, and communications, and a couple of energy and materials players. But the one sector that's almost completely absent is... drum roll... healthcare. The portfolio includes only kidney care giant DaVita, a stock Buffett added back in 2011.
Abel closed out a position in health insurance giant UnitedHealth Group in the first quarter of the year -- Berkshire Hathaway had that position since the second quarter of last year.
So, it's fair to say Buffett and Abel are pretty much absent from the healthcare space. Why should you take the opposite path? It's important to note that, while it's a great idea to seek investing inspiration from experts like Buffett and Abel, their investing needs, priorities, and resources may be quite different from yours. So while you may follow them into certain stocks and industries, it's probably not a good idea to follow every move.
The healthcare opportunity
The healthcare industry represents a clear opportunity for investors, offering a wide range of offerings to suit many investment styles. For example, an aggressive investor might choose a pharma or biotech company operating in a high-growth area such as the weight loss drug market. Leader Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) has seen earnings and its stock price skyrocket, and this growth story may have many chapters left. (The obesity drug market is on track to reach almost $100 billion by the end of the decade.) Growth investors may also look for potential new entrants here, such as biotech Viking Therapeutics.
And if this is your investment style, you might find plenty of exciting possibilities in the area of biotech as these companies are exploring cutting-edge therapies -- and any wins could result in explosive gains for the stocks.
For example, Intellia Therapeutics launched a rolling submission for its gene editing candidate for swelling disorder, hereditary angioedema. If all goes smoothly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Intellia meet Wall Street's forecast for a 115% increase in the stock price over the coming 12 months.
Meanwhile, cautious investors or those looking for dividend income have a plethora of choices in the area of healthcare. Since patients need their medicines and procedures regardless of the economic background, this sector generally offers investors access to steady earnings growth over time. And this steady growth means many of these companies have the financial resources to commit to dividend payments. Some, such as Johnson & Johnson and Abbott Laboratories, have even increased their dividends for more than 50 years, winning them a spot on the Dividend Kings list.
All of this means that, though it's a great idea to follow some of the moves of investing giants Warren Buffett and his Berkshire Hathaway successor Greg Abel, it's also wise to make some independent moves. And one of them should be considering the high-potential sector of healthcare.

The weight-loss drug market
Weight-loss drugs come in injectable and oral forms. The initially approved drugs, including Novo Nordisk's Wegovy (semaglutide) and Eli Lilly's Zepbound (tirzepatide), are injectable. However, Novo Nordisk now has Wegovy approved in an oral formulation, and it's quickly gaining sales traction. Eli Lilly's recently approved oral pill, Foundayo (orforglipron), is also expected to do very well; the Wall Street consensus calls for $1.2 billion in Foundayo sales in 2026, compared with $19.6 billion for Zepbound.
Why Viking Therapeutics can grab market share
VK2735 is in Phase 3 trials for both oral and injectable forms. The bullish case rests on its potential to capture market share. VK2735 has two key advantages and one disadvantage. First, in both Phase 2 trials for VK2735, it demonstrated a significantly steeper velocity of weight loss than its rivals.

Second, VK2735 is also being developed as a dual-formulation therapy, and results from a Phase 1 trial will be released in the third quarter of this year.
On a less positive note, the Phase 2 data for oral VK2735 showed excellent efficacy but disappointing tolerability, with a 20% treatment discontinuation rate due to adverse events.
Where next for Viking
The bulls hope the Phase 1 maintenance dosing trial will demonstrate the efficacy of a dual-formulation strategy using the same drug. In addition, the Phase 3 clinical trials will hopefully demonstrate a similarly steep rate of weight loss, with better tolerability data in the oral VK2735 trial after dosing is adjusted.
Meanwhile, the bears focus on the fact that Viking is behind two much larger rivals in the race and still has to demonstrate better tolerability data for VK2735 oral in its Phase 3.
