And now Lilly just took two major steps forward in this billion-dollar market. Here's what you need to know.
How GLP-1 drugs work
Let's start with a few quick notes on GLP-1 drugs and Lilly's path along this road so far. GLP-1 drugs soared to popularity with the release of Ozempic as doctors and patients realized their weight-loss potential. These drugs act on hormonal pathways involved in digestion, so they help in the key areas of appetite and blood sugar control.
Today's drugs come in injectable format, administered on a weekly basis. The one exception is the recently approved Wegovy pill -- and regulators are reviewing Lilly's oral weight loss candidate, orforglipron, right now, so a second pill option may be on the horizon.
Novo held the first-to-market advantage, but in recent years, Lilly's drugs have taken the lead. One reason for this may be due to efficacy. In a head-to-head trial, for example, Zepbound helped patients lose more weight than Wegovy. All of this has resulted in soaring revenue and stock performance for Lilly.
Now, let's turn to the latest pieces of news that could push this company further ahead. Novo's CagriSema, a GLP-1 and amylin analogue combo that's currently under regulatory review, didn't beat Lilly's Zepbound in a phase 3 trial. CagriSema -- in a dose of 2.4 mg of cagrilintide and 2.4 mg of semaglutide -- delivered weight loss of 23% over 84 weeks. That's compared to weight loss of more than 25% for 15 mg dosage of tirzepatide.
A positive sign for Lilly
CagriSema, which acts on additional pathways involved in weight control, has been seen as a potential product to rival the Lilly drug -- so this latest trial result isn't good news for Novo. But it is positive for Lilly, as it adds to evidence that Zepbound may be the most effective drug available.
The second piece of news isn't related to efficacy, but it is related to something else that's important to patients: convenience. Lilly just released a new Zepbound format that holds a month's worth of doses in a single pen. This could make treatment easier for patients while they're traveling, for example, as they don't have to carry around as many devices. Mounjaro already is available in this format, called the KwikPen.
This latest news, reinforcing the efficacy and convenience of Zepbound, clearly should work in Lilly's favor in the quarters to come. It's important to remember that this market is growing too, with analysts expecting it to reach nearly $100 billion over the coming four years. And Lilly's orforglipron and farther down the road, other potential drugs could add to growth as this story unfolds.
Facing competition
Of course, Lilly likely will face increasing competition in the coming years. Novo remains a significant player, and other potential market participants -- from Pfizer to Viking Therapeutics -- could take some market share. These companies and others are studying weight loss candidates in clinical trials right now.
Lilly could lose momentum if a rival enters the market with a stronger product. So far, though, Lilly's current products and its pipeline, as well as its massive investments in manufacturing, show its ambition in this market. And that means it has a solid chance of staying ahead and delivering long-term growth to investors.

Here's another known trend: the probability of success rises dramatically as new compounds move into later stages of development. Many of those weight-loss candidates are in preclinical or phase 1 clinical trials. Viking Therapeutics' leading weight-loss therapy, a GLP-1 medicine called VK2735, is already in phase 3 clinical trials. That doesn't guarantee approval, but it makes it far more likely than if the candidate were still just in phase 1.
VK2735's mid-stage results were strong; few drugmakers have posted phase 2 results of this caliber. Viking is developing VK2735 in both subcutaneous and oral formulations, and is exploring different combinations to help patients keep the weight off after they lose it, a challenge in the pharmaceutical industry.
Viking Therapeutics' promising leading candidate and multipronged approach says a lot about the company. If it can execute nearly flawlessly by posting strong phase 3 results for VK2735 and earning approval for the medicine in both formulations, it could carve out a niche for itself in this large and rapidly expanding market. That could lead to excellent financial results and superior stock-market returns over the next 10 years.
Things to keep in mind
Could Viking's stock skyrocket in the coming years? Yes. But keep in mind that if it does encounter clinical or regulatory setbacks, the stock could also sink. And now that the weight-loss market is becoming even more competitive, a clinical success could be a commercial failure.

If you're looking for the company-specific headline that sent shares of Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) soaring today, don't bother. You won't find one. Rather, investors are proverbially connecting dots based on other pharmaceutical companies' headlines. In this instance, what's bad for (much-bigger) Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) is good for Viking.
One less future competitor
Getting straight to the point, Novo Nordisk's injectable weight-loss drug CagriSema is good, but not better than Eli Lilly's (NYSE: LLY) tirzepatide when administered the same way for the same length of time. Specifically, whereas patients receiving subcutaneous injections of Lilly's tirzepatide lost an average of 25.5% of their body weight over 84 weeks, CagriSema users only lost an average of 23%.

To win the FDA's approval, a new treatment must be at least as effective as an alternative that's already on the market, or offer some other discernible benefit like better patient tolerability.
But what does this have to do with Viking Therapeutics? Although it's a different formulation, Viking's VK2735 currently in phase 3 trials is also a subcutaneously administered drug leveraging the same GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) weight-loss pathway that Lilly's tirzepatide injection and Novo's CagriSema are designed to leverage. If Novo Nordisk is unable to win approval for this injectable version of CagriSema, it means one less future competitor to Viking Therapeutics' VK2735 (assuming it's approved). That's why as of 12:41 p.m. ET today VKTX shares are up 9.6%.
Undoubtedly good news, even if it doesn't matter just yet
It's not an outrageous investor response either.
Although the weight-loss drug industry is largely dominated by Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk right now -- both of which already have obesity treatments on the market -- as the business matures there's growing demand for more finely tuned choices like Viking's. Now it looks like there's going to be at least a little more room for these alternatives as well. To this end, it's worth noting that by some measures Viking's weight-loss drug showed superior efficacy in its phase 2 trials.
Or if nothing else, VK2735 is proving reasonably safe and well-tolerated compared to similar alternatives.
Just bear in mind that Viking's VK2735 isn't yet FDA-approved either, and though its results thus far have been encouraging, there's no guarantee it will be.

The weight loss drug market is on track to reach nearly $100 billion by the end of the decade, analysts predict. This, along with the sustained high demand for these drugs, means there is room for more than one or two companies to succeed here.
At certain points over the past few years, demand exceeded the supply of the Lilly and Novo weight loss drugs. Though both companies no longer face that problem since they've ramped up manufacturing capabilities, other players could easily carve out market share -- especially a company like Viking that so far has delivered solid clinical trial results.
2. Viking's market value makes growth possible
Viking has a market value of about $3.5 billion, leaving it room to run if it gains product approvals and then goes on to generate revenue growth. A 10x increase would result in a market cap of $35 billion -- a move that would be possible if Viking's pipeline delivers.
Of course, with one or two products on the market, Viking wouldn't reach the market value levels of its big pharma rivals -- Lilly and Novo, with market values of more than $900 billion and $200 billion, respectively, have enormous product portfolios supporting growth. But this biotech could easily see its market value soar from current levels.
3. Viking has a track record of stock performance
Viking stock surged following phase 2 data from VK2735. This was during one trading session back in 2024 -- the stock jumped 121%. Since, Viking shares have lost much of that gain, but this movement shows that investors have their eyes on the stock and are ready to pile in on any good news.
A potential product approval could, of course, be big as it opens the door to significant and lasting revenue growth. So, such news, as well as additional clinical trial news in the meantime, could help Viking along the path to increasing by 10.

CRISPR Therapeutics (NASDAQ: CRSP) reached a major goal in recent years: It won approval in 2023 of its first gene editing treatment, Casgevy for blood disorders. This marked an important moment because it was the world's first approval of a CRISPR-based gene editing therapy and demonstrated the ability of this technology to treat disease.
CRISPR gene editing involves the cutting of DNA and the leveraging of a natural repair process to fix a faulty gene. Because the technique repairs genes responsible for disease, it acts as a functional cure -- this makes it a true game changer. Casgevy's launch took time, due to the months-long treatment process, but trends are positive: In the fourth quarter, Casgevy generated $54 million in revenue, and for the full year, it brought in $116 million.
The company expects readouts from clinical trials spanning various disease indications this year, suggesting there may be several catalysts for stock performance just ahead. For example, CRISPR Therapeutics aims to release updates on zugo-cel in autoimmune diseases, as well as on CTX310 for a condition that may lead to heart disease.
I also like the fact that CRISPR Therapeutics has more than $1.9 billion in cash so that it may support the development of its pipeline.
Wall Street expects this stock to climb 58% over the coming 12 months, making now a great time to pick up shares of this biotech innovator.
2. Viking Therapeutics
Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) hasn't yet commercialized a product, but it's progressing through late-stage clinical trials -- and with a candidate that could enter one of the biggest growth markets in healthcare. I'm talking about the obesity drug market. Viking is developing VK2735 in injectable and oral formats. The injectable format is involved in a phase 3 trial right now, while the oral format is set to enter phase 3 in the third quarter of the year.
Both forms of VK2735 have delivered solid trial results so far and aim to enter the GLP-1 drug market in the not-too-distant future. This class of drugs works by stimulating hormonal pathways involved in digestion, and by doing so, GLP-1 drugs help regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. Today's commercialized GLP-1 drugs -- made by Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk -- have helped people worldwide easily shed pounds, and that's why they've become so popular.
Viking also aims to launch a clinical trial for a new type of weight loss candidate this year -- one that interacts with amylin and calcitonin receptors, which play a key role in metabolism.

2 Innovative Biotech Stocks That May Climb 58% and 200%, According to Wall Street

Eli Lilly and Company LLY is one of the two clear leaders in the rapidly expanding diabetes and obesity treatment market, supported by the strong success of its GLP-1–based therapies — Mounjaro for type II diabetes (T2D) and Zepbound for chronic weight management. Both medicines contain tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that has delivered impressive efficacy in clinical and real-world use.
However, Lilly faces intense competition from Novo Nordisk NVO, which markets semaglutide-based blockbusters — Ozempic for diabetes and Wegovy for obesity.
The global obesity drug market is projected to grow dramatically, reaching nearly $95 billion by 2030 and potentially $125 billion by 2035, according to Goldman Sachs estimates. While Lilly and Novo Nordisk currently dominate this space, both companies are racing to develop next-generation, more powerful and more convenient GLP-1–based treatments, including oral options and multi-acting candidates, to stay ahead of emerging rivals. Additionally, potential approvals in new indications could further accelerate sales growth for Mounjaro and Zepbound over the long term.
Lilly is investing broadly in obesity and has several new molecules currently in clinical development, with a range of oral and injectable medications with different mechanisms of action.
Orforglipron is a Key Candidate in LLY’s Obesity Pipeline
A key drug in its obesity pipeline is a once-daily oral GLP-1 small molecule called orforglipron. Oral pills will be a more convenient alternative to the currently available once-weekly injectable obesity treatments like Zepbound and Wegovy. Oral pills may significantly lower the treatment burden and potentially broaden patient adoption versus injections. Oral pills can also be manufactured at scale to meet global demand, which, in turn, can drive billions in additional sales.
Lilly has announced positive data across six studies on orforglipron in obesity and type II diabetes. Lilly has already filed regulatory applications in the United States, the EU and several other countries seeking approval for orforglipron in obesity. Lilly expects to launch orforglipron for obesity in the United States in the second quarter of 2026 and in most international markets during 2027. For the type II diabetes indication, Lilly has filed a regulatory application in the EU and plans to file regulatory applications in the United States and other countries later in 2026.
Lilly is also evaluating orforglipron in late-stage studies in other disease areas like obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis pain of the knee, stress urinary incontinence and hypertension. These multiple late-stage studies on orforglipron can expand the candidate’s revenue potential beyond obesity/T2D.
Retatrutide – Another Key Obesity Candidate
The company is also evaluating another key candidate, triple-acting incretin, retatrutide (which combines GLP-1, GIP and glucagon), in type II diabetes and obesity, along with other indications like obstructive sleep apnea, knee osteoarthritis and chronic low back pain, in late-stage studies.
Data from a phase III study on retatrutide in obesity and knee osteoarthritis pain showed that the drug delivered significant weight loss with substantial relief from osteoarthritis pain. Lilly plans to seek approval for retatrutide for obesity and knee osteoarthritis pain in 2026. It believes retatrutide has the potential to become an important new treatment option for patients who want significant weight loss and face certain complications.
Other than tirzepatide, retatrutide and orforglipron, Lilly also has some other candidates in its obesity pipeline, including its selective amylin agonist, eloralintide and next-generation GIP/GLP-1 dual agonist brenipatide, both in late-stage studies.
Race to Make Oral Obesity Pill Intensifies
Competition in the obesity market is heating up. Novo Nordisk gained approval for an oral version of Wegovy in December 2025 and launched the pill in January 2026. The Wegovy pill gives NVO the first-to-market advantage and will initially bring in additional revenues, which may hurt Lilly’s market share. However, we believe Lilly may be able to close the gap fast, once its own oral obesity pill, orforglipron is approved by the FDA this year.
Smaller biotechs like Structure Therapeutics GPCR and Viking Therapeutics VKTX are also developing oral GLP-1 drugs for treating obesity.
Viking Therapeutics’ dual GIPR/GLP-1 receptor agonist, VK2735, is being developed both as oral and subcutaneous formulations for the treatment of obesity. Viking plans to advance oral VK2735 into phase III development for obesity in the third quarter of 2026.
Structure Therapeutics’ ACCESS study on its orally GLP-1 RA, aleniglipron, for obesity, met its primary and all key secondary endpoints. Structure Therapeutics expects to initiate the late-stage program of aleniglipron in obesity around mid-2026.
LLY’s Stock Price, Valuation and Estimates
Lilly’s stock has risen 19.5% in the past year, compared with the industry’s 18.2% increase.

Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) is aiming to join one of the biggest growth industries of the times: the weight loss drug market. People hoping to lose weight have rushed to get in on GLP-1 drugs, a type of product that has proven its efficacy in clinical trials and in the real world over the past few years. Many have become household names, from Eli Lilly's Zepbound to Novo Nordisk's Wegovy.
But those pharma giants may see others join the market in the years to come -- and one serious contender could be Viking. The biotech player's candidate is involved in a phase 3 trial in injectable format, and it plans to soon begin a phase 3 trial for the candidate in oral format.

Why are people rushing into GLP-1 drugs?
So, first, let's talk a bit about GLP-1 drugs and why so many people have rushed to get a prescription. These products interact with hormonal pathways involved in appetite control and the management of blood sugar levels. I've spoken with people who take them, and the message is clear: They are easy to administer weekly by injection, so don't interfere with lifestyle, they generally are well tolerated, and they control appetite. And, of course, the weight loss has been impressive.
All of this has made these drugs immensely popular, and at times, demand has even exceeded supply. Looking ahead, analysts expect the obesity drug market to reach nearly $100 billion by the end of the decade. All of this suggests there is plenty of room for today's leaders as well as new entrants to coexist -- and each generate growth.
Viking's candidate, like Eli Lilly's weight loss drugs, is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist, meaning it interacts with two hormonal pathways instead of just one. The phase 3 study of VK2735 in injectable format is ongoing, and a phase 3 study of the oral format is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year. Viking also is conducting a phase 1 maintenance dosing study involving both injectable and oral formats -- the idea is to develop dosing options for ongoing maintenance use of the potential drug. Results from this trial are expected during the third quarter of this year.
A new clinical trial ahead
On top of this, Viking also is on the road to launching clinical trials for another candidate, a dual amylin and calcitonin receptor agonist. In the first quarter, the biotech company aims to file a request to begin these studies.
Amylin and calcitonin receptors play important roles in metabolism, making them attractive targets in the quest for new weight loss drugs. Viking hopes this potential product may be used as a stand-alone treatment for those who aren't candidates for GLP-1 drugs, as well as in combination with GLP-1 drugs.
All of this means this year could be a big one for Viking, with the release of data, progress in late-stage clinical trials, and the launch of a trial for a new weight loss candidate. The trial launch is particularly interesting because it shows that Viking isn't relying on a single GLP-1 candidate; instead, it's innovating to build a pipeline that may support long-term growth.
Consider your feelings about risk
Does this mean now is the right time to buy Viking stock? This depends on your comfort with risk. Viking doesn't yet have products on the market, and a lot is riding on the outcome of trials for VK2735. There's reason to be optimistic about this candidate based on the data we've seen so far, but in drug development, the risk isn't eliminated until the candidate wraps up trials and receives a nod from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. So cautious investors might hold off on investing in this clinical stage biotech right now.
But if you don't mind this risk that comes with drug development, now is a great time to get in on Viking stock. This year may be a good one for the company -- but if all goes well in clinical development, the long term may be even better.

2026 Could Be a Big Year for Viking Therapeutics. Time to Buy?

Novo Nordisk NVO shares have plunged 20.5% in the past month. The massive sell-off of the stock was primarily driven by a weaker-than-expected 2026 financial outlook issued by the company, despite its fourth-quarter 2025 results beating both earnings and sales estimates.
Novo Nordisk is a dominant player in the cardiometabolic space, led by its blockbuster semaglutide-based (GLP-1) drugs, Ozempic (for type II diabetes [T2D]) and Wegovy (for obesity), which generated DKK 206.2 billion in 2025, including DKK 53.7 billion in the fourth quarter. However, sales momentum has slowed in the past year amid intensifying competition from Eli Lilly LLY, widespread compounded semaglutide use in the United States, pricing pressure and foreign-exchange headwinds.
While legal actions and tighter FDA oversight may curb compounded alternatives, Novo Nordisk’s structural growth challenges remain unresolved, as is evident from its 2026 outlook.
Although headline sales and operating profit will benefit from a one-off $4.2 billion reversal of U.S. 340B rebate provisions, NVO excluded this gain from its new non-IFRS adjusted metrics, exposing the weakness in the core business. On an adjusted basis, Novo Nordisk expects sales and operating profit to decline 5-13% at CER in 2026, with further FX headwinds in DKK terms. Even on a reported basis, guidance implies roughly flat sales and only modest operating profit growth, highlighting the limited core momentum once non-recurring benefits are stripped out.
Growth in International Operations, driven by broader GLP-1 adoption and Wegovy roll-outs, is expected to be offset by rising competition, pricing pressure and semaglutide exclusivity losses. In the United States — Novo Nordisk’s most important market — slowing prescriptions, reduced Medicaid obesity coverage and lower realized prices under access initiatives and the MFN agreement weigh on expectations. At the same time, stepped-up R&D and commercial spending are set to pressure margins, with no repeat of the favorable gross-to-net adjustments that boosted 2025 results.
The disappointing 2026 guidance has largely wiped out the optimism that followed the approval and launch of oral Wegovy — the first GLP-1 therapy in pill form for weight management. While the oral formulation initially raised hopes of a meaningful new growth driver, investors now appear unconvinced that it can offset Novo Nordisk’s weakening near-term outlook or materially strengthen its competitive position.
Eli Lilly had launched Zepbound for obesity in December 2023, much later than NVO launched Wegovy injection a couple of years before. Still, Zepbound managed to capture much higher market share than Wegovy and surpassed the latter’s sales in 2025. If history repeats itself, Lilly may be able to close the gap fast once its GLP-1 oral pill, orforglipron, currently under review, is approved by the FDA later in 2026.
With slowing demand, intensifying competition, pricing pressure, rising costs and limited near-term catalysts, Novo Nordisk’s growth outlook is deteriorating across multiple fronts. Let’s dig deeper and understand the company’s strengths and weaknesses to understand how to play the stock.
Semaglutide — Still NVO’s Primary Top-Line Driver
Novo Nordisk’s success in recent years has been driven by the sales of Ozempic and Rybelsus (oral) for T2D, and Wegovy for obesity. The company boasts one of the industry's broadest diabetes and obesity care portfolios.
Ozempic and Wegovy are the major revenue drivers. Novo Nordisk is expanding access to Wegovy through broader distribution and partnerships with major U.S. pharmacies, telehealth providers, and proprietary and third-party platforms to ensure patients can obtain authentic, FDA-approved treatments. If successful, this strategy, along with a legal crackdown, could help mitigate the compounded alternatives problem.
Novo Nordisk is expanding semaglutide's reach through new indications. Wegovy injection is now approved for reducing major cardiovascular events, easing HFpEF symptoms, and relieving osteoarthritis-related knee pain in obesity.
Rybelsus’ label in the United States and the EU has been expanded to include cardiovascular benefits in diabetes patients. A 7.2 mg Wegovy dose, showing up to 25% weight loss in the STEP UP study, is under review in the United States and the EU. Label expansion is also being sought for Ozempic in treating peripheral artery disease in the United States and the EU.
Eli Lilly is Novo Nordisk’s fierce competitor in the diabetes/obesity space. Despite being on the market for a shorter period, LLY’s tirzepatide-based injections, Mounjaro (T2D) and Zepbound (obesity), have become its key top-line drivers, eating away market share from NVO. Following strong fourth-quarter results, Lilly announced a bullish outlook for 2026. In 2025, Mounjaro and Zepbound generated combined sales of $36.5 billion, comprising around 56% of LLY’s total revenues.
NVO Expands Footprint in Rare Diseases and Liver Care
Beyond its GLP-1 portfolio, Novo Nordisk is broadening its presence in rare diseases. The company has submitted a regulatory filing seeking approval for Mim8 in hemophilia A in the United States. NVO has also secured both EU and U.S. approvals for Alhemo to treat hemophilia A and B, with or without inhibitors.
The FDA has also granted accelerated approval to Wegovy as the first GLP-1 therapy to treat noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis with moderate-to-advanced liver fibrosis. This marked a significant milestone in liver care by offering patients a treatment that can both halt disease activity and reverse liver damage.
NVO Focuses on Next-Generation Drugs for Obesity
Novo Nordisk is also developing several next-generation obesity candidates in its pipeline, especially targeting the lucrative U.S. market. Apart from CagriSema, currently awaiting FDA evaluation, NVO is gearing up to launch a dedicated late-stage program evaluating cagrilintide as a monotherapy for obesity.
Novo Nordisk is also gearing up to advance another next-generation candidate, amycretin, for weight management into late-stage development. The phase III program on amycretin is planned to be initiated during the first quarter of 2026. The company is also developing oral monlunabant in a mid-stage obesity study. It recently signed a $2.2 billion deal with Septerna for developing and commercializing oral small-molecule medicines for treating obesity, diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases.

In the past six months, Novo Nordisk shares have lost 7.8% against the industry’s 28.4% growth. The company has also underperformed the sector and the S&P 500 during the same time frame, as seen in the chart below.

Novo Nordisk is trading at a discount to the industry, as seen in the chart below. Going by the price/earnings ratio, the company’s shares currently trade at 14.76 forward earnings, which is lower than 18.83 for the industry. The stock is trading much below its five-year mean of 29.25.

Earnings estimates for 2026 have deteriorated from $3.55 to $3.36 per share over the past 60 days. During the same time frame, Novo Nordisk’s 2027 earnings estimates have declined from $3.65 to $3.34.

Here’s How to Play NVO Stock
Given the weakening near-term outlook for Novo Nordisk, currently carrying a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), investors may be better off reducing exposure in the short term. The company’s disappointing 2026 guidance signals slowing core growth, margin pressure from rising R&D and commercial spending, and limited earnings support once one-off accounting benefits are excluded. At the same time, competitive intensity is rising rapidly — particularly from Eli Lilly — while pricing pressure, slower U.S. prescriptions and reduced reimbursement coverage are weighing on demand. The fact that weak guidance has already erased much of the enthusiasm around oral Wegovy suggests sentiment may remain fragile, increasing the risk of further volatility and downside in the coming quarters.

The medium-to-long-term risk profile also appears increasingly unfavorable. Novo Nordisk’s heavy reliance on the semaglutide franchise leaves it exposed to market share erosion, exclusivity losses and intensifying innovation-driven competition, while pipeline investments may take years to translate into meaningful revenues. Continued estimate downgrades, slowing growth across key markets and an uncertain competitive trajectory in obesity and diabetes raise concerns about the sustainability of earnings expansion. Even though NVO shares are trading cheaper, the discount reflects deteriorating fundamentals rather than an attractive entry point.
Competition in the obesity treatment market is intensifying as the space attracts new contenders beyond leaders Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. Smaller biotech firms, like Viking Therapeutics VKTX, are advancing GLP-1–based therapies to challenge the incumbents. Viking Therapeutics is developing its dual GIPR/GLP-1 RA, VK2735, both as oral and subcutaneous formulations for the treatment of obesity. Until clearer signs of durable growth, competitive stabilization and margin recovery emerge, reducing exposure in NVO stock across short, medium and long-term horizons appears to be the more prudent strategy.

NVO Crashes 21% in a Month: Is This an Indication to Sell the Stock?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Thursday closed down -1.57%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -1.34%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -2.04%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) fell -1.55%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) fell -2.02%.
Stock indexes gave up an early advance and sold off sharply on Thursday as the Magnificent Seven technology stocks retreated, weighing on the broader market. Also, Cisco Systems fell more than -12% after saying that higher memory-chip prices are expected to eat into its profitability. In addition, trucking and logistics companies fell sharply amid the threat of AI on future earnings.

Lower bond yields were supportive of stocks, as the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 2.25-month low of 4.10% after weekly jobless claims fell less than expected and Jan existing home sales fell more than expected to a 16-month low.
US weekly initial unemployment claims fell -5,000 to 227,000, showing a slightly weaker labor market than expectations of 223,000.
US Jan existing home sales fell -8.4% m/m to a 16-month low of 3.91 million, weaker than expectations of 4.5 million.
The markets this week will focus on corporate earnings results and economic news. On Friday, Jan CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y, and Jan core CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, as more than two-thirds of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 76% of the 358 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 9% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell from a new all-time high and closed down by -0.40%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed up +0.05%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 fell from a record high and closed down by -0.02%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Thursday closed up by +16.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -6.8 bp to 4.104%. Mar T-notes rallied to a 1.75-month high on Thursday, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 2.25-month low of 4.098%. T-notes moved higher on Thursday after weekly US jobless claims fell less than expected and Jan existing home sales fell more than expected to a 16-month low, both of which are dovish for Fed policy. T-notes added to their gains after the selloff in stocks sparked safe-haven demand for government debt securities. T-notes raced to their highs Thursday afternoon on strong demand for the Treasury’s $25 billion auction of 30-year T-bonds that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.66, well above the 10-auction average of 2.37 and an 8-year high.
European government bond yields moved lower on Thursday. The 10-year German bund yield dropped to a 2.25-month low of 2.775% and finished down -1.4 bp to 2.779%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell to a 3-week low of 4.443% and finished down -2.4 bp to 4.452%.
UK Q4 GDP rose +0.1% q/q and +1.0% y/y, weaker than expectations of +0.2% q/q and +1.2% y/y.
UK Dec manufacturing production fell -0.5% m/m, weaker than expectations of-0.1% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks sold off on Thursday, weighing on the overall market. Apple (AAPL) closed down more than -5%, and Amazon.com (AMZN), Meta Platforms (META), and Tesla (TSLA) closed down more than -2%. Also, Nvidia (NVDA) closed down more than -1%, Microsoft (MSFT) closed down -0.66%, and Alphabet (GOOGL) closed down -0.64%.
Trucking and logistics companies retreated on Thursday amid fears of disruption from artificial intelligence. Landstar Systems (LSTR) closed down more than -15%, and CH Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) closed down more than -14%. Also, Expeditors International of Washington (EXPD) closed down more than -13%, and XPO Inc (XPO) closed down more than -5%. In addition, JB Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) and Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) closed down more than -4%, and Covenant Logistics Group (CVLG) closed down more than -3%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks fell on Thursday after Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) declined by more than -3%. Coinbase Global (COIN) closed down more than -7%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed down more than -4%. Also, Strategy (MSTR) closed down more than -2%, and Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed down more than -1%.
ICON Plc (ICLR) closed down more than -39% after saying the audit committee launched an internal investigation into its accounting practices, which, in preliminary findings, indicated revenue may have been overstated “by less than 2%” in fiscal years 2023 and 2024.
Baxter International (BAX) closed down more than -15% after forecasting 2026 organic sales growth to be about flat.
Tyler Technologies (TYL) closed down more than -15% after reporting Q4 total revenue of $575.2 million, weaker than the consensus of $590.8 million.
Cisco Systems (CSCO) closed down more than -12% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after forecasting Q3 adjusted gross margin of 65.5% to 66.5%, weaker than the consensus of 68.2%.
Rollins (ROL) closed down more than -10% after reporting Q4 revenue of $912.9 million, weaker than the consensus of $927.3 million.
Check Point Software Technologies Ltd (CHKP) closed down more than -6% after reporting Q4 revenue of $744.9 million, weaker than the consensus of $746.3 million.
Cognex Corp (CGNX) closed up more than +37% after reporting Q4 revenue of $252.3 million, well above the consensus of $239.6 million, and forecasting Q1 revenue of $235 million to $255 million, stronger than the consensus of $230.4 million.
Equinix (EQIX) closed up more than +10% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after forecasting a full-year Ebitda of $5.14 billion to $5.22 billion, above the consensus of $5.02 billion.
Zebra Technologies (ZBRA) closed up more than +8% after reporting Q4 net sales of $1.48 billion, better than the consensus of $1.47 billion.
Motorola Solutions (MSI) closed up more than +7% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $4.59, better than the consensus of $4.35, and forecasting 2026 adjusted EPS of $16.70 to $16.85, well above the consensus of $16.27.
Viking Therapeutics (VKTX) closed up more than +7% after it said it plans to advance its oral obesity drug to Phase 3 in the third quarter of this year.
Exelon (EXC) closed up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q4 operating income of $1.19 billion, better than the consensus of $1.03 billion.
Howmet Aerospace (HWM) closed up more than +6% after reporting Q4 revenue of $2.17 billion, above the consensus of $2.13 billion, and forecasting Q1 revenue of $2.23 billion to $2.25 billion, stronger than the consensus of $2.16 billion.
Sandisk (SNDK) closed up more than +5% after Japanese chipmaker Kioxia forecasted higher demand for Sandisk’s NAND memory chips.
