United Airlines (UAL) Falls More Steeply Than Broader Market: What Investors Need to Know

Stocks extended their losses on Thursday, and crude prices added to their gains on comments from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who said that Iran’s leverage of closing the Strait of Hormuz should be used, and attacks on Gulf Arab neighbors will continue. He added that Iran will open unspecified “other fronts” in the war if the US and Israel persist with their attacks. Also, comments from President Trump gave crude prices a boost when he said that preventing Iran from having nuclear weapons is "of far greater interest and importance" to him than the cost of oil, a sign that the war in the Middle East isn't close to a de-escalation.
Credit concerns weighed on bank stocks and asset managers on Thursday after Morgan Stanley and Cliffwater LLC capped withdrawals from their private credit funds amid investor demand to redeem more than the funds allow. Private credit funds are grappling with a wave of redemption requests amid growing concerns over the quality of their loans. BlackRock last week decided to limit withdrawals, a move that other asset managers have since followed.
Crude oil prices rallied sharply on Thursday despite the IEA members' decision on Wednesday to release 400 million barrels from emergency oil stockpiles. The IEA said the war against Iran is disrupting 7.5% of global oil supply, and the conflict will cut global oil supply by 8 million bpd this month. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows, has choked off oil and gas flows due to Iran’s attacks on shipping in the waterway and forced Gulf producers to cut output because they can’t export from the region. UK Defense Secretary Healey said Thursday that it is increasingly evident that Iran is laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, which could keep the strait closed for the foreseeable future.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country would need “firm international guarantees against future aggression” to accept a ceasefire as well as reparations. However, comments from President Trump late Wednesday suggest the conflict could continue for weeks when he said that it would be unwise for the US to wind down hostilities too soon.
US economic news on Thursday was mixed for stocks after weekly jobless claims rose less than expected, a sign of labor market strength. Also, Jan housing starts unexpectedly rose to an 11-month high, but Jan building permits fell to a 5-month low.
US weekly initial unemployment claims fell -1,000 to 213,000, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of an increase to 215,000.
US Jan housing starts unexpectedly rose +7.2% m/m to an 11-month high of 1.487 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.341 million. Jan building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -5.4% m/m to a 5-month low of 1.376 million, weaker than expectations of 1.410 million.
The US Jan trade deficit shrank to -$54.5 billion, narrower than expectations of -$66.0 billion.
Q4 earnings season is nearly over, with more than 98% of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 495 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a -25 bp FOMC rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.79%. China's Shanghai Composite fell from a 1-week high and closed down -0.10%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.04%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Thursday closed down by -18.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +3.9 bp to 4.269%. June T-notes fell to a 5-week low on Thursday, and the 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 5-week high of 4.275%. Thursday’s +9% rally in oil prices raised inflation expectations and undercut T-note prices. Also, concerns that the cost of the ongoing war against Iran will boost the US budget deficit are bearish for T-notes. On the positive side for T-notes on Thursday was strong demand for the Treasury’s $22 billion auction of 30-year T-bonds that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.45, above the 10-auction average of 2.39.
European government bond yields moved higher on Thursday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2.25-year high of 2.962% and finished up +2.5 bp to 2.957%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 6.25-month high of 4.800% and finished up +8.7 bp to 4.773%.
The European Union's economy chief, Valdis Dombrovskis, said the inflation rate could surpass 3% this year, and GDP in the Eurozone could be as much as -0.4 points lower if the war in the Middle East causes crude oil prices to remain around $100 per barrel and gas prices stay elevated for an extended period.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Airline stocks and cruise line operators sold off on Thursday amid a 9% surge in crude oil prices, which are boosting companies’ fuel costs and threatening earnings. Carnival (CCL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) closed down more than -7%, and Alaska Air Group (ALK) and Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) closed down more than -6%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL), Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), and American Airlines Group (AAL) closed down more than -4%. In addition, Delta Airlines (DAL) closed down more than -2%.
Chip stocks retreated on Thursday, weighing on the broader market. Energy producers and service providers rose on Thursday after crude prices jumped more than +9%. ConocoPhillips (COP), Chevron (CVX), Phillips 66 (PSX), and Valero Energy (VLO) closed up more than -2%. Also, APA Corp (APA), Devon Energy (DVN), Exxon Mobil (XOM), and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) closed up more than +1%.
Netskope (NTSK) closed down more than -21% after forecasting a Q1 adjusted net loss per share of -6 cents to -7 cents, wider than Q4’s -4 cent EPS loss.
G-III Apparel Group Ltd (GIII) closed down more than -11% after reporting Q4 net sales of $771.5 million, below the consensus of $791.8 million.
UiPath (PATH) closed down more than -7% after reporting Q4 subscription revenue of $251.2 million, below the consensus of $252.1 million.
Dollar General (DG) closed down more than -6% after giving an underwhelming 2027 comparable sales forecast of up +2.2% to +2.7%, the midpoint right on the consensus of +2.45%.

Crude oil prices are moving higher today despite the IEA members' decision on Wednesday to release 400 million barrels from emergency oil stockpiles. The IEA said the war against Iran is disrupting 7.5% of global oil supply, and the conflict will cut global oil supply by 8 million bpd this month. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows, has choked off oil and gas flows due to Iran’s attacks on shipping in the waterway and forced Gulf producers to cut output because they can’t export from the region.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said that his country would need “firm international guarantees against future aggression” to accept a ceasefire as well as reparations. However, comments from President Trump late Wednesday suggest the conflict could continue for weeks when he said that it would be unwise for the US to wind down hostilities too soon.
US economic news today was mixed for stocks after weekly jobless claims rose less than expected, a sign of labor market strength. Also, Jan housing starts unexpectedly rose to an 11-month high, but Jan building permits fell to a 5-month low.
US weekly initial unemployment claims fell -1,000 to 213,000, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of an increase to 215,000.
US Jan housing starts unexpectedly rose +7.2% m/m to an 11-month high of 1.487 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.341 million. Jan building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -5.4% m/m to a 5-month low of 1.376 million, weaker than expectations of 1.410 million.
The US Jan trade deficit shrank to -$54.5 billion, narrower than expectations of -$66.0 billion.
Q4 earnings season is nearly over, with more than 95% of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 492 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a -25 bp FOMC rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets are lower. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.86%. China's Shanghai Composite fell from a 1-week high and closed down -0.10%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.04%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) are down by -9 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +1.6 bp to 4.245%. June T-notes fell to a 5-week low today, and the 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 5-week high of 4.249%. Today’s +8% rally in oil prices is raising inflation expectations and undercutting T-note prices. Also, concerns that the cost of the ongoing war against Iran will boost the US budget deficit are bearish for T-notes. In addition, supply pressures are weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $22 billion of 30-year bonds later today.
European government bond yields are mixed today. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2.25-year high of 2.958% and is up +1.2 bp to 2.944%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +5.3 bp to 4.739%.
The European Union's economy chief, Valdis Dombrovskis, said the inflation rate could surpass 3% this year and GDP in the Eurozone could be as much as -0.4 points lower if the war in the Middle East causes crude oil prices to remain around $100 per barrel and gas prices stay elevated for an extended period.
Swaps are discounting a 4% chance of a -25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Airline stocks and cruise line operators are falling today due to the 8% surge in crude oil prices, which are boosting companies’ fuel costs and threatening earnings. Carnival (CCL), Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), United Airlines Holdings (UAL), American Airlines Group (AAL), Alaska Air Group (ALK), and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are down more than -3%. Also, Delta Airlines (DAL) is down more than -2%.
Chip stocks are sliding today, weighing on the broader market. Lam Research (LRCX), Applied Materials (AMAT), and Micron Technology (MU) are down more than -3%. Also, ASML Holding NV (ASML), Intel (INTC), Analog Devices (ADI), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), KLA Corp (KLAC), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Microchip Technology (MCHP), and Texas Instruments (TXN) are down more than -2%.
Fertilizer stocks are climbing today amid supply disruptions from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. CF Industries Holdings (CF) is up more than +7% to lead gainers in the S&P 500. Also, Intrepid Potash (IPI) and Mosaic (MOS) are up more than +4%.
Netskope (NTSK) is down more than -22% after forecasting a Q1 adjusted net loss per share of -6 cents to -7 cents, wider than Q4’s -4 cent EPS loss.
G-III Apparel Group Ltd (GIII) is down more than -14% after reporting Q4 net sales of $771.5 million, below the consensus of $791.8 million.
Dollar General (DG) is down more than -7% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after giving an underwhelming 2027 comparable sales forecast of up +2.2% to +2.7%, the midpoint right on the consensus of +2.45%.
UiPath (PATH) is down more than -5% after reporting Q4 subscription revenue of $251.2 million, below the consensus of $252.1 million.
MercadoLibre (MELI) is down more than -4% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after JPMorgan Chase downgraded the stock to neutral from overweight.
GlobalFoundries (GFS) is down more than -4% after a subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Co. was said to sell as much as $852 million of its stake in the stock overnight at $41.60 to $42.60 per share.
Dow Inc. (DOW) is up more than +6% after Citigroup upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $40.
Atlassian Corp (TEAM) is up more than +4% after announcing a restructuring that will eliminate about 10% of its workforce. UBS upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $97.
Occidental Petroleum (OXY) is up more than +3% after Wells Fargo Securities double upgraded the stock to overweight from underweight with a price target of $69.
LyondellBasell Industries NV (LYB) is up more than +3% after Citigroup upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $76.

Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR), a developer of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, hasn't impressed many investors since it went public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in September 2021. The combined company's stock opened at $9.90 on its first day, but it now trades at about $6.
Like many SPAC-backed start-ups, Archer disappointed its initial investors by falling short of its own ambitious forecasts. Instead of hitting its targets of producing ten Midnight eVTOLs in 2024 and 250 eVTOLs in 2025, it has only manufactured two eVTOLs as of this writing.

In 2025, it generated a mere $0.3 million in revenue while incurring a net loss of $618.2 million. Those numbers look disastrous, but I believe Archer could still deliver a ten-bagger gain (or more) from its current levels if it finally ramps up production over the next decade.
Why could Archer Aviation's stock soar?
Archer's Midnight eVTOL carries a single pilot and four passengers, travels up to 100 miles on a single charge, and can achieve a maximum speed of 150 miles per hour. Compared to helicopters, eVTOLs are greener and easier to land in crowded urban areas.
At the end of 2025, Archer already had an "indicative" (non-committal) backlog of $6 billion with pending orders for approximately 1,200 aircraft. Its top customers include United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL), Future Flight Global, Soracle (a joint venture between Japan Airlines (OTC: JAPSY) and Sumitomo (OTC:SSUM.F)), Ethiopian Airlines, and Abu Dhabi Aviation. All those companies want to use Midnight for short-range air taxi services. Archer's top investor, Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), will serve as its contract manufacturer for those aircraft.
By 2028, analysts expect Archer's revenue to soar to $512.4 million. With a market cap of $5.5 billion, it still looks reasonably valued at 11 times that estimate.
What challenges does it face?
However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hasn't approved Archer's first commercial flights. Its first air taxi flights in Abu Dhabi, which were scheduled to start this year, will likely be delayed by the intensifying conflict with Iran. So until the FAA approves its first flights and the situation in the Middle East improves, Archer's stock will remain out of favor.
That said, the global eVTOL market could still grow at a 23.5% CAGR from 2025 to 2034, according to Exactitude Consultancy. So if you expect Archer to overcome its challenges and scale up its deliveries over the next decade, it could deliver much bigger gains.

ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. (ZIM) reported fourth-quarter 2025 loss per share of 58 cents, which was narrower thanthe Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of $1.01. In the year-ago reported quarter, ZIM reported earnings per share of $4.66.
Revenues of $1.48 billion beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.41 billion but declined 31.5% from the year-ago quarter. The downside was due to the decrease in freight rates and carried volume.

Adjusted EBIT was $13 million in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared with $658 million in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted EBIT margins in the fourth quarter of 2025 fell to 1% from 30% in the year-ago quarter.

ZIM exited the fourth quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $1.05 billion compared with $1.29 billion at the end of the previous quarter.

ZIM’s Fourth-Quarter 2025 Dividend
ZIM’s board of directors declared a regular cash dividend of almost $106 million, or $0.88 per ordinary share. The dividend will be paid on March 26, 2026, to shareholders of record as of March 20, 2026.
For 2025, ZIM has made dividend payments amounting to total $240 million, or $1.99 per share, reflecting almost 50% of 2025 net income.
Q4 Performances of Other Transportation Companies
Delta Air Lines DAL reported fourth-quarter 2025 earnings (excluding 31 cents from non-recurring items) of $1.55 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.53. Earnings decreased 16.22% on a year-over-year basis due to high labor costs.
Revenues in the December-end quarter were $16 billion, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $15.63 billion and increasing 2.9% on a year-over-year basis. Adjusted operating revenues (excluding third-party refinery sales) increased 1.2% year over year to $14.6 billion. Revenue growth was impacted by about 2 points due to the government shutdown, mainly in the domestic segment, consistent with the company's disclosure last month.
J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (JBHT) reported fourth-quarter 2025 earnings of $1.90 per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.81 and improved 24.2% year over year.
Total operating revenues of $3.09 billion lagged the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.12 billion and were down 1.6% year over year. JBHT’s fourth-quarter revenue performance was hurt by a 2% and 4% decline in revenue per load excluding fuel surcharge revenue in Intermodal (JBI) and Truckload (JBT), respectively, a 1% decrease in average trucks in Dedicated Contract Services (DCS), and a 7% and 2% decline in load volume in Integrated Capacity Solutions (ICS) and JBI, respectively. The decrease in revenue, excluding fuel surcharge revenue, was partially offset by a 15% increase in volume in JBT, a 1% uptick in productivity, excluding fuel surcharge revenue, in DCS, and an increase in revenue per load in ICS. Total operating revenue, excluding fuel surcharge revenue, decreased 2% year over year.
United Airlines Holdings, Inc. (UAL) reported solid fourth-quarter 2025 results wherein the company’s earnings and revenues beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
UAL's fourth-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share (excluding 9 cents from non-recurring items) of $3.10 surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.98 but declined 4.9% on a year-over-year basis. The reported figure lies within the guided range of $3.00-$3.50.
Operating revenues of $15.4 billion outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate marginally by 0.1% and increased 4.8% year over year. Passenger revenues (which accounted for 90.4% of the top line) increased 4.9% year over year to $13.9 billion. UAL flights transported 45,679 passengers in the fourth quarter, up 3% year over year. Cargo revenues fell 6% year over year to $490 million. Revenues from other sources rose 9.1% year over year to $981 million.

Why Airlines Are Cutting Earnings Forecasts
1. Jet Fuel Prices Have Spiked Sharply
Fuel is one of the largest airline expenses, and recent geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East have driven oil prices dramatically higher. Optimistically, crude oil prices dropped toward $80 a barrel on Tuesday after previously spiking above $100.
Still, jet fuel prices have surged over 70% in Asia and more than 140% in Europe, driven by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and broader supply-chain threats.
Higher fuel costs directly reduce profit margins, forcing airlines to revise earnings expectations downward.
2. Geopolitical Tensions Are Disrupting Flight Routes
Airspace closures have sprawled across the Middle East after Iran-related strikes grounded thousands of flights and disrupted global travel flows.
These disruptions increase operating costs (longer routes, cancellations) and reduce revenue.
3. Demand and Pricing Have Been Softer Than Expected
Along with rising costs, domestic airline stocks has underperformed the broader market this year due to weaker-than-hoped demand and pricing.
Economic uncertainty has also played a part in dampening consumer travel spending.
4. Labor Issues and Pilot Shortages
Airlines continue to face elevated labor costs and pilot shortages, which pressure margins and complicate capacity planning.
Additionally, there has been a TSA personnel shortage recently, causing hours-long airport security lines across the U.S., including major hubs like Houston, New Orleans, and Atlanta.
The TSA shortage is directly tied to the ongoing partial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown, which has forced TSA officers to work without pay, leading to increased absences and reduced staffing.
Southwest a Notable Airline Stock That Looks Oversold
Holding spots on the coveted Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) list, three notable airline stocks are making the case for being oversold, including Allegiant Travel Co., Southwest Airlines and International Consolidated Airlines Group, the holding company for British Airways and Iberia Airlines.
All three trade under 10X forward earnings and have fallen sharply over the last month, but are experiencing a stable or favorable trend of EPS revisions despite industry-wide cost pressures.
Southwest, for example, is less affected by international flight disruptions as a major regional carrier in the U.S. Trading at 9X forward earnings, FY26 and FY27 EPS estimates are actually up 6% and 4% for Southwest in the last 30 days, respectively.
Projected to bring in more than $30 billion in annual sales, Southwest’s annual earnings are now expected to spike to $4.38 per share this year compared to EPS of $0.93 in 2025. Furthermore, FY27 EPS is projected to leap another 18% to $5.17.
More compelling, the year-ago EPS estimates picture shows that Southwest’s FY26 and FY27 earnings estimate revisions have now spiked 57% and 33%, respectively.
Conclusion & Strategic Thoughts
Airline stocks may start to present some of the most intriguing buy-the-dip opportunities for investors who are willing to be patient and expand their risk tolerance. The airline industry is highly cyclical and sensitive to economic shifts, yet it can deliver strong returns when operating conditions turn favorable.
Keeping this in mind, major carriers likeAmerican, Delta and United have all cut their earnings forecast but remain attractive for long-term investors with a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Today, the company was hit with a price target cut from TD Cowen, which lowered its target on the stock from $17 to $13 -- just 17% above today’s price. The analyst cited fuel cost volatility and demand weakness as potential risks.
It is tough to argue with this sentiment, as most major U.S. airlines have distanced themselves from fuel hedging programs over the last few years, meaning a prolonged rise in crude oil prices could really weigh on AAL’s financials. Furthermore, potential flight-buying customers are also hampered by the rising pump prices, creating a double whammy of negativity for AAL stock. I’d rather stay away, personally.

Stock Market Today, March 10: American Airlines Falls After Analysts Cut Price Targets on Sector Pressures

With many airline stocks trading at enticingly low forward P/E valuations, their rebound prospects have become increasingly attractive following a broader industry-wide correction.
However, several major U.S. airlines have cut or softened their earnings forecasts due to rising fuel costs, geopolitical disruptions, and uneven travel demand.
These pressures have contributed to weaker sector performance and investor caution, although there are a few noteworthy airline stocks that are starting to make the argument for being in oversold territory.
Why Airlines Are Cutting Earnings Forecasts
1. Jet Fuel Prices Have Spiked Sharply
Fuel is one of the largest airline expenses, and recent geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East have driven oil prices dramatically higher. Optimistically, crude oil prices dropped toward $80 a barrel on Tuesday after previously spiking above $100.
Still, jet fuel prices have surged over 70% in Asia and more than 140% in Europe, driven by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and broader supply-chain threats.
Higher fuel costs directly reduce profit margins, forcing airlines to revise earnings expectations downward.
2. Geopolitical Tensions Are Disrupting Flight Routes
Airspace closures have sprawled across the Middle East after Iran-related strikes grounded thousands of flights and disrupted global travel flows.
These disruptions increase operating costs (longer routes, cancellations) and reduce revenue.
3. Demand and Pricing Have Been Softer Than Expected
Along with rising costs, domestic airline stocks has underperformed the broader market this year due to weaker-than-hoped demand and pricing.
Economic uncertainty has also played a part in dampening consumer travel spending.
4. Labor Issues and Pilot Shortages
Airlines continue to face elevated labor costs and pilot shortages, which pressure margins and complicate capacity planning.
Additionally, there has been a TSA personnel shortage recently, causing hours-long airport security lines across the U.S., including major hubs like Houston, New Orleans, and Atlanta.
The TSA shortage is directly tied to the ongoing partial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown, which has forced TSA officers to work without pay, leading to increased absences and reduced staffing.
Southwest is a Notable Airline Stock That Looks Oversold
Holding spots on the coveted Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) list, three notable airline stocks are making the case for being oversold, including Allegiant Travel Company ALGT, Southwest Airlines LUV, and International Consolidated Airlines Group ICAGY, the holding company for British Airways and Iberia Airlines.
All three trade under 10X forward earnings and have fallen sharply over the last month, but are experiencing a stable or favorable trend of EPS revisions despite industry-wide cost pressures.

Southwest, for example, is less affected by international flight disruptions as a major regional carrier in the U.S. Trading at 9X forward earnings, FY26 and FY27 EPS estimates are actually up 6% and 4% for Southwest in the last 30 days, respectively.
Projected to bring in more than $30 billion in annual sales, Southwest’s annual earnings are now expected to spike to $4.38 per share this year compared to EPS of $0.93 in 2025. Furthermore, FY27 EPS is projected to leap another 18% to $5.17.

More compelling, the year-ago EPS estimates picture shows that Southwest’s FY26 and FY27 earnings estimate revisions have now spiked 57% and 33%, respectively.

Airline stocks may start to present some of the most intriguing buy-the-dip opportunities for investors who are willing to be patient and expand their risk tolerance. The airline industry is highly cyclical and sensitive to economic shifts, yet it can deliver strong returns when operating conditions turn favorable.
Keeping this in mind, major carriers like American AAL, Delta DAL, and United UAL have all cut their earnings forecast but remain attractive for long-term investors with a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
Although there could still be better buying opportunities ahead, several indicators suggest the pullback in the major airline stocks is starting to offer a compelling entry point as well, considering travel demand as a whole was still strong heading into 2026, and they're also trading at discounted valuations. This setup favors patient buyers looking for cyclical recovery potential.
