TTD Factor-Based Stock Analysis

Investors eyeing a purchase of The Trade Desk Inc (Symbol: TTD) stock, but cautious about paying the going market price of $51.87/share, might benefit from considering selling puts among the alternative strategies at their disposal. One interesting put contract in particular, is the January 2027 put at the $37.50 strike, which has a bid at the time of this writing of $4.85. Collecting that bid as the premium represents a 12.9% return against the $37.50 commitment, or a 9.2% annualized rate of return (at Stock Options Channel we call this the YieldBoost).
Selling a put does not give an investor access to TTD's upside potential the way owning shares would, because the put seller only ends up owning shares in the scenario where the contract is exercised. Within that group, Dayforce Inc (Symbol: DAY) and First Solar Inc (Symbol: FSLR) are two of the day's stand-outs, showing a gain of 27.0% and 9.6%, respectively. Among technology ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLK), which is flat on the day on the day, and up 14.57% year-to-date. Dayforce Inc, meanwhile, is down 7.55% year-to-date, and First Solar Inc is up 24.29% year-to-date. FSLR makes up approximately 0.2% of the underlying holdings of XLK.

Components of that ETF with the highest volume on Monday were Nvidia, trading up about 0.5% with over 88.0 million shares changing hands so far this session, and Palantir Technologies, down about 2.8% on volume of over 47.1 million shares. The Trade Desk is the component faring the best Monday, up by about 5.9% on the day, while Rocket Companies is lagging other components of the Innovator Equity Managed Floor ETF, trading lower by about 3.3%.

In early trading on Monday, shares of lululemon athletica topped the list of the day's best performing components of the Nasdaq 100 index, trading up 2.5%. Year to date, lululemon athletica has lost about 46.8% of its value.
And the worst performing Nasdaq 100 component thus far on the day is Intel, trading down 4.4%. Intel is showing a gain of 17.1% looking at the year to date performance.

Digital advertising veteran The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD) used to be hot stuff. In early December 2024, the stock had posted a market-stomping 156% gain in two years. The stock traded at market-darling valuation multiples such as 134 times free cash flow and 30 times sales. The Trade Desk made mighty Nvidia's (NASDAQ: NVDA) stock look affordable by comparison.
But things have changed.

The Trade Desk's recent earnings reports have been robust, but they were accompanied by a sobering market analysis and modest forward-looking guidance. The brutal market reaction wiped out several years of The Trade Desk's investor gains.
So if you invested $500 in The Trade Desk five years ago, that position would be worth just $576 today:
The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) market index more than doubled over the same period, in terms of total returns. That's an above-average compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.6% versus The Trade Desk's anemic 2.9%.
Silver lining of the reality check
These days, you can buy The Trade Desk's stock at a less outrageous valuation of 33 times free cash flow and 9 times sales. If the stock price doubled today, the shares would still carry lower valuation multiples than Nvidia's 62 times free cash flow and 30 times sales.
Mind you, The Trade Desk is still far from a deep-discount value stock. These multiples are appropriate for a fast-growing business addressing a large target market.
And I would argue that The Trade Desk fits that description. Its sales have been soaring for years, and free cash flows are richer than ever:
The company's near-term outlook has been less bullish in recent quarters, but management still expects roughly 14% sales growth in the third-quarter report. This growth story is far from over. The 2025 stock price cuts simply made this top-notch company more affordable.
