In Tuesday night's State of the Union address, President Trump doubled down on his commitment to tariffs. President Trump’s new 10% global tariffs went into effect on Tuesday after the Supreme Court struck down his global “reciprocal” tariffs last Friday. Mr. Trump subsequently threatened to raise the global tariff rate to 15%, and an administration official said the White House is working on a formal order to implement that higher rate, but the timeline for its implementation has not been finalized. Mr. Trump is applying the 10% baseline levy under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, which allows the president to impose the charge for 150 days without congressional approval.
Geopolitical risks remain a negative for stocks. Tuesday evening, President Trump said Iranian officials are "again pursuing their sinister nuclear ambitions," boosting speculation that the US may be preparing a military strike on Iran in the coming days. US-Iran nuclear talks are scheduled to resume on Thursday in Geneva, and Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said he saw a “good chance” of a diplomatic solution to the standoff over his country’s nuclear program. Last Friday, President Trump said that he’s considering a limited military strike on Iran to ramp up pressure on the country to strike a deal over its nuclear program, and that he thought 10 to 15 days was “pretty much” the “maximum” he would allow for negotiations to continue.
US MBA mortgage applications rose +0.4% in the week ended February 20, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -4.7% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +4.1%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell -8 bp to a nearly 3.5-year low of 6.09% from 6.17% in the prior week.
St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said Wednesday that the fed funds rate is near neutral and well-positioned to balance risks to employment and inflation.
The market’s focus this week will be on corporate earnings results and economic news. After Wednesday’s close, Nvidia will release its earnings results. On Thursday, initial weekly unemployment claims are expected to climb by +10,000 to 216,000. On Friday, the Feb MNI Chicago PMI is expected to slip -1.8 to 52.2.
Q4 earnings season is nearing its end, with more than 90% of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 453 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose to a new record high and closed up +0.93%. China’s Shanghai Composite climbed to a 3.5-week high and closed up +0.72%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 rallied to a new all-time high and closed up +2.20%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Wednesday closed down by -4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.9 bp to 4.048%. T-notes were under pressure on Wednesday from strength in stocks, which curbed safe-haven demand for government debt. Also, weak demand for the Treasury’s $70 billion auction of 5-year T-notes undercut T-note prices, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.32, below the 10-auction average of 2.37.
European government bond yields were mixed on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield was unchanged at 2.701%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +1.1 bp to 4.317%.
The German Mar GfK consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell -0.5 to -24.7, weaker than expectations of an increase to -23.0.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
AI-infrastructure stocks and chipmakers rallied on Wednesday to support gains in the broader market. Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +7%, and Seagate Technology Holdings (STX) closed up more than +6%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT) closed up more than +4%, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), KLA Corp (KLAC), and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +2%.
Software stocks were stronger on Wednesday, boosting the overall market. Thomson Reuters (TRI) closed up more than +10%, and Intuit (INTU) closed up more than +6%. Also, Datadog (DDOG) closed up more than +5%, and Palantir Technologies (PLTR), Cadence Design Systems (CDNS), Salesforce (CRM), and CrowdStrike (CRWD) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) and Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +2%, and Autodesk (ADSK), Adobe Systems (ADBE), and ServiceNow (NOW) closed up more than +1%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks rallied sharply on Wednesday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) surged more than +7%. Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +13%, and Strategy (MSTR) closed up more than +8%. Also, MARA Holdings (MARA) closed up more than +6%, and Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed up more than +5%. In addition, Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed up more than +3%.
Homebuilding stocks retreated on Wednesday on disappointment that President Trump failed to mention any new policy initiatives to bolster the housing market in Tuesday evening’s State of the Union speech. Lennar (LEN) and PulteGroup (PHM) closed down more than -4%, and DR Horton (DHI) closed down more than -5%. Also, KB Home (KBH) closed down more than -2%, and Toll Brothers (TOL) closed down more than -1%.
Alcoholic beverage producers moved lower on Wednesday after Diageo Plc, the maker of Guinness beer and Johnnie Walker whiskey, cut its sales guidance due to further weakness in the US market. Brown-Forman Corp (BF.B) closed down more than -7%, Molson Coors Beverage (TAP) closed down more than -4%, and Constellation Brands (STZ) closed down more than -3%.
Circle Internet Group (CRCL) closed up more than +35% after reporting Q4 total revenue and reserve income of $770 million, stronger than the consensus of $747 million.
Cava Group (CAVA) closed up more than +26% after forecasting full-year restaurant comparable sales will climb +3% to +5%, stronger than the consensus of +2.75%.
Axon Enterprise (AXON) closed up more than +17% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $2.15, well above the consensus of $1.56.

Stock Indexes Settle Higher on Strength in Tech

Shares of beer giant Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP) declined 4.8% on Tuesday.
While Molson Coors had already fallen following disappointing revenue numbers in its fourth-quarter earnings release last week, a prominent Wall Street analyst lowered his rating on the stock to the ignominious "Underperform" rating today, kicking the stock while it's down.

BofA goes from neutral to negative
Today, Bank of America analyst Peter Galbo downgraded Molson Coors from a "Neutral" rating to an "Underperform," while lowering his price target from $50 to $42. Molson Coors had ended yesterday's trading at $49.89.
An Underperform rating is pretty rare on Wall Street, so the implication seems fairly dire for the beer giant.
Galbo states that fourth-quarter results and the full-year outlook were weaker than expected, with no indications of when beer volume declines might stabilize. Galbo also pointed out that Molson Coors' high fixed costs and inflationary pressures are causing earnings to decline much more than revenue if volumes decline. For instance, although Molson's management forecast just flattish revenue for 2026 after a 4.8% revenue decline in 2025, that translated into a much uglier forecast: a 15% to 18% decline in adjusted EPS.
Molson Coors is a risky value play
After today's decline, Molson Coors looks cheap on the surface, trading at around 10 times this year's earnings estimates, with a 3.9% dividend yield.
Nevertheless, the company also has a not-small $5.4 billion in net debt, good for 2.3 times its adjusted EBITDA.
While not an extremely high leverage ratio, a declining business with that level of debt likely isn't a recipe for a rapid turnaround. Alcohol consumption has been trending downwards overall, so while Molson Coors might not go bankrupt, the stock might also not appreciate much anytime soon unless those larger trends reverse.

Stocks Push Higher as AI-Infrastructure Companies and Chipmakers Rally

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Thursday closed down -0.28%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.54%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.41%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) fell -0.25%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) fell -0.40%.
Stock indexes settled lower on Thursday, led by losses in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks, amid renewed caution over the outlook for artificial intelligence. Concerns remain that AI could disrupt entire sectors of the economy and that the huge investments in the technology may not pay off. Stocks also face some negative carryover from Wednesday, when the minutes of the Jan 27-28 FOMC meeting stated that “several” policymakers suggested the Fed may need to raise interest rates if inflation stays above its goal.

Geopolitical risks also undercut stocks on Thursday. WTI crude oil (CLH26) rose more than +1% to a 6.5-month high on comments from the head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, who said the US military buildup in the Middle East means Iran’s window to reach a diplomatic agreement over its nuclear activities is at risk of closing. Also, President Trump said Thursday that “really bad things will happen” if there is no deal with Iran.
Thursday’s US economic news was mixed for stocks. On the positive side, weekly jobless claims fell to a 5-week low, and the Feb Philadelphia business outlook survey unexpectedly rose to a 5-month high. Conversely, the Dec trade deficit widened more than expected to a 5-month high, and Jan pending home sales unexpectedly declined.
Hawkish comments on Thursday from Fed Governor Stephen Miran were bearish for stocks, as he said he now sees a "less accommodative" interest rate path, given that US employment has held up better than anticipated and goods inflation has been more stubborn.
US weekly initial unemployment claims fell -23,000 to a 5-week low of 206,000, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of 225,000.
The US Feb Philadelphia business outlook survey unexpectedly rose +3.7 to a 5-month high of 16.3, stronger than expectations of a decline to 7.5.
The US Dec trade deficit was -$70.3 billion, wider than expectations of -$55.5 billion and the biggest deficit in 5 months.
US Jan pending home sales unexpectedly fell -0.8% m/m, weaker than expectations of a +2.0% m/m increase.
The market’s focus is on corporate earnings results and economic news. On Friday, Q4 GDP is expected to expand by +3.0% (q/q annualized), and the Q4 core price index is expected to climb by +2.6%. Also, Dec personal spending is expected to rise by +0.4% m/m and Dec personal income is expected to be up +0.3% m/m. In addition, the Dec core PCE price index (the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge) is expected to be up +0.3% m/m and +2.9% y/y. The Feb S&P manufacturing PMI is expected to slip by -0.1 to 52.3, and Dec new home sales will be released. Finally, the University of Michigan Feb consumer sentiment index is expected to be revised slightly lower to 57.2 from 57.3.
Q4 earnings season is nearing its end, with more than three-quarters of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 418 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 6% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.72%. China’s Shanghai Composite is closed for the week-long Lunar New Year holidays. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +0.57%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Thursday closed up +0.5 of a tick. The 10-year T-note yield fell -1.2 bp to 4.071%. T-notes recovered from early losses on Thursday and settled slightly higher as heightened geopolitical risks with Iran knocked stocks lower and boosted safe-haven demand for government debt.
T-notes initially moved lower on Thursday after better-than-expected US economic news showed weekly jobless claims fell to a 5-week low, and the Feb Philadelphia business outlook survey unexpectedly rose to a 5-month high. Swaps are discounting a 2% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.

Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks were under pressure on Thursday, dragging the broader market lower. Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -4%, and Seagate Technology Holdings (STX) closed down more than -3%. Also, Microchip Technology (MCHP), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), Intel (INTC), and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed down more than -2%. In addition, Qualcomm (QCOM), Lam Research (LRCX), Micron Technology (MU), and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed down more than -1%.
Avis Budget Group (CAR) closed down more than -22% after forecasting full-year adjusted Ebitda of $800 million to $1.00 billion, weaker than the consensus of $1.07 billion.
EPAM Systems (EPAM) closed down more than -17% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting a full-year revenue growth rate on an organic constant currency basis of 3% to 6%, weaker than the consensus of 6.3%.
Pool Corp (POOL) closed down more than -14% after reporting Q4 adjusted RPS of 84 cents, below the consensus of 98 cents, and forecasting full-year EPS of $10.85 to $11.15. weaker than the consensus of $11.61.

Stocks Decline Amid AI Fears and Geopolitical Risks

Molson beat on earnings last night... sort of.
The beer company still managed to lose $10.75 per share in 2025.
Molson Coors Beverage (NYSE: TAP) stock dropped 5% through 1:45 p.m. ET Thursday after reporting mixed earnings last night.
On the one hand, analysts forecast Molson would earn only $1.15 per share, but Molson reported $1.21 per share in Q4 instead. On the other hand, analysts thought Molson's quarterly sales would be more than $2.7 billion -- but they ended up under $2.7 billion.

Molson Coors Q4 earnings
Sales declined 2.7% year over year at Molson, and GAAP earnings dropped 6.9% at the beer company. For the full year, Molson reported a 4.2% sales decline to $11.1 billion, with a disappointing loss of $10.75 per share.
Molson blamed a "non-cash partial goodwill impairment charge" for turning what should have been an annual profit into a big GAAP loss.
CEO Rahul Goyal lamented that 2025 was a "tough year" for Molson, but insisted his company has the "brands, infrastructure and people, and a strong balance sheet to weather this macro volatility."
Is Molson Coors stock a sell?
This "weathering" may take some time. Turning to guidance, company CFO Tracey Joubert warned of "rising commodity input costs pressuring our bottom-line" in 2026.
2026 sales are expected to be basically flat against 2025 -- about $11 billion. Combined with rising costs, though, the company forecasts an 11% to 15% year over year decline in "underlying" earnings (i.e., non-GAAP, not counting the 2025 write-downs).
The good news is Molson still expects to generate about $1.1 billion in positive free cash flow this year. On Molson's $9.6 billion market capitalization, that works out to a price-to-free cash flow ratio of only 8.7. Molson shouldn't have to grow much at all to justify that valuation.
But it does have to grow at least some.

Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.97%. China’s Shanghai Composite is closed for the week-long Lunar New Year holidays. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +0.57%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) today are down by -5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +1.7 bp to 4.100%. T-notes are sliding today on better-than-expected US economic news that showed weekly jobless claims fell to a 5-week low, and the Feb Philadelphia business outlook survey unexpectedly rose to a 5-month high. T-notes also have negative carryover from Wednesday’s hawkish minutes of the Jan 27-28 FOMC meeting, where “several” policymakers suggested the Fed may need to raise interest rates if inflation stays above their goal. In addition, today’s jump in WTI crude oil by more than +1% to a 3-week high is lifting inflation expectations, a bearish factor for T-notes.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +1.4 bp to 2.753%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +1.6 bp to 4.390%.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks are under pressure today, dragging the broader market lower. Seagate Technology Holdings (STX) is down more than -3%, and Intel (INTC), Micron Technology (MU), Western Digital (WDC), Lam Research (LRCX), Applied Materials (AMAT), KLA Corp (KLAC), and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) are down more than -2%. Also, Nvidia (NVDA), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Palantir Technologies (PLTR), and Qualcomm (QCOM) are down more than -1%.
EPAM Systems (EPAM) is down more than -19% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting a full-year revenue growth rate on an organic constant currency basis of 3% to 6%, weaker than the consensus of 6.3%.
Avis Budget Group (CAR) is down more than -18% after forecasting full-year adjusted Ebitda of $800 million to $1.00 billion, weaker than the consensus of $1.07 billion.
Pool Corp (POOL) is down more than -13% after reporting Q4 adjusted RPS of 84 cents, below the consensus of 98 cents, and forecasting full-year EPS of $10.85 to $11.15. weaker than the consensus of $11.61.
Wayfair (W) is down more than -12% after reporting Q4 active customers of 21 million, below the consensus of 21.4 million.
Molson Coors Beverage (TAP) is down more than -8% after reporting Q4 net sales of $2.66 billion, below the consensus of $2.70 billion.
Booking Holdings (BKNG) is down more than -7 to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $48.80, below the consensus of $48.86.
Carvana (CVNA) is down more than -6% after reporting Q4 adjusted Ebitda of $511 million, weaker than the consensus of $535.7 million.
Cheesecake Factory (CAKE) is down more than -3% after reporting that Q4 restaurant comparable sales fell 2.2%, weaker than the consensus of -0.81%.
Omnicom Group (OMC) is up more than +13% to lead gainers in the S&P 50 after reporting Q4 revenue of $5.50 billion, well above the consensus of $4.52 billion.
Etsy (ETSY) is up more than +10% after selling its Depop business to eBay for about $1.2 billion.
Deere & Co (DE) is up more than +9% after raising its full-year net income forecast to $4.5 billion to $5.0 billion from a previous forecast of $4.00 billion to $4.75 billion.
DoorDash (DASH) is up more than +5% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after forecasting Q1 Marketplace gross order value of $31 billion to $31.8 billion, above the consensus of $30.75 billion.
Dentsply Sirona (XRAY) is up more than +5% after Bank of America Global Research upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $17.
Quanta Services (PWR) is up more than +4% after reporting Q4 revenue of $7.84 billion, better than the consensus of $7.40 billion, and forecasting full-year revenue of $33.25 billion to $33.75 billion, well above the consensus of $31.32 billion.
Kinetik Holdings (KNTK) is up more than +3% after it said it is considering a sale after being approached by Western Midstream Partners.

Stocks Retreat on AI Concerns and Geopolitical Risks

Investors in Molson Coors Beverage Co (Symbol: TAP) saw new options begin trading today, for the October 16th expiration. One of the key data points that goes into the price an option buyer is willing to pay, is the time value, so with 239 days until expiration the newly trading contracts represent a potential opportunity for sellers of puts or calls to achieve a higher premium than would be available for the contracts with a closer expiration.
