RTX, which belongs to the Zacks Aerospace - Defense industry, posted revenues of $21.58 billion for the quarter ended June 2025, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5.12%. The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.

Notable Thursday Option Activity: NCLH, SPCE, BTU

With shares down 98% over the last five years, Virgin Galactic (NYSE: SPCE) is a perfect example of the risks involved in stock market investing. While speculative, unprofitable companies can be attractive because of their volatility and millionaire-maker potential, they also face a high risk of failure because reality eventually catches up to the hype.
That said, investors seem to be returning to Virgin Galactic stock after better-than-expected earnings and some analyst upgrades. Shares rose by an impressive 80% on May 16. But is this move a dead cat bounce or the start of a sustainable bull run for the company? Let's dig deeper.

Is space tourism a real opportunity?
Virgin Galactic is helping pioneer a brand new industry called space tourism. Currently, this involves sending wealthy individuals on brief, recreational flights to suborbital space -- roughly 51.4 miles above sea level in Virgin Galactic's case (although rival services may go higher).
While these trips fall short of "outer space" (62 miles above sea level), it is enough to offer passengers a brief period of weightlessness and the ability to view planet Earth from a remarkably high vantage point.
Unsurprisingly, tickets are expensive, at around $600,000 per seat. Still, the company is betting that enough wealthy people will be willing to open their wallets for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They might be right.
For context, top-of-the-line hotel rooms, such as the Royal Mansion in Dubai Atlantis, cost a jaw-dropping $100,000 per night. And climbing Mount Everest can cost from $33,000 to $200,000, depending on the package, according to Expedreview. Virgin Galactic believes it can attract these same high rollers and estimates space tourism has a total addressable market of 300,000, which is expected to grow 8% annually.
Talk is cheap. Where are the results?
Any investor who has spent enough time analyzing speculative stocks knows that talk is cheap. Companies often make exciting projections that might not actually materialize, so it usually makes more sense to focus on their current performance and growth rates. Virgin Galactic's first-quarter results leave much to be desired.
Revenue fell 77% year over year to $461,000, although a reduction in expenses (mainly research and development) helped the company narrow its operating loss from $113.1 million to $88.9 million.
This cash burn is still alarming. With just $140.8 million in cash and equivalents on its balance sheet, Virgin Galactic won't be able to sustain its losses without turning to outside sources of capital, such as equity dilution. Equity dilution essentially means creating and selling more units of its stock while its market cap remains the same. The result is that each share represents a smaller claim on the business and its future earnings.
Virgin Galactic is still in a pre-commercial stage. Its primary focus is building and designing its aircraft while getting the necessary regulatory approvals to start flying paying customers in 2026. In this context, shareholders may benefit more from the company diluting its shares to raise cash because it increases the chances that it will make it to commercialization and avoid worse outcomes, such as bankruptcy.
Is Virgin Galactic a millionaire-maker?
Now it's time to answer the big question: Is Virgin Galactic a potential millionaire-maker stock? The short answer is yes (with some significant caveats). If the company can successfully establish commercial operations, its business could generate substantial shareholder returns over the long term. However, this isn't guaranteed.
While Virgin Galactic's management claims they will be able to start commercial operations in 2026, the company has a long track record of overpromising and underdelivering. In fact, the first passenger-carrying flights were supposed to begin in 2011 -- a whopping 14 years ago. Virgin Galactic keeps kicking the can down the road, so investors should take everything it promises with a grain (or perhaps a handful) of salt.
We don't know when Virgin Galactic's commercial operations will begin. That means the company is likely to continue burning through hundreds of millions in capital each year and diluting shareholders. The risks outweigh the potential rewards right now.

Notable Monday Option Activity: COIN, NET, SPCE

In June 2024, space tourism pioneer Virgin Galactic (NYSE: SPCE) launched its Unity spaceplane with a planeload of space tourists for the last time. In the months since, the company has continued working on its new spaceplane, dubbed the Delta class.
Expected to enter service sometime in 2026, the new Delta class should offer multiple improvements over Unity. For example, reconditioning and engine replacement requirements on Unity limited that spaceplane to flying no more frequently than once per month, but Delta will be able to fly twice per week. Also important for the company's revenue-generating potential, instead of the four passengers Delta could carry, Delta-class spaceplanes will be large enough to accommodate six paying passengers per flight.

That's a 50% improvement in passenger capacity, times a ninefold improvement in launch frequency, yielding a potential 1,250% improvement in revenues, over and above any changes in ticket pricing. (Virgin Galactic's earlier tickets sold for less than $250,000 apiece, whereas tickets sold more recently have been going for $450,000 and up.) By my calculations, flying just one Delta-class spaceplane at full capacity, and as frequently as promised, could generate monthly revenues in excess of $22 million for Virgin Galactic -- versus just $1 million in revenue from early Unity flights.
But Virgin Galactic could potentially make even more money than that by limiting the number of passengers carried on its planes... or even exiting the tourism business entirely.
Big news from Redwire
How might that happen?
We got our first clue last week, when Virgin Galactic announced that it is partnering with space infrastructure specialist Redwire (NYSE: RDW), hiring it to manufacture "research payload lockers" for its Delta spaceplanes. Virgin says the lockers will be used to carry microgravity research experiments aboard Delta, useful for conducting "research in preparation for orbital, lunar, or Martian missions" by other companies.
Now, these lockers aren't tiny. Flying without passengers, says Virgin, "each spaceship will be capable of holding five payload racks, for up to 20 lockers total." So each rack can accommodate four lockers. Alternatively, Virgin might mix and match its seating arrangement, flying missions with some tourists and some payload racks -- basically swapping out one passenger per four-locker rack.
Cargo or tourists?
Why would Virgin Galactic want to do this, though?
That brings us to our next clue. Researching the potential revenue that Virgin Galactic might be able to generate from carrying boxed-up scientific experiments rather than living and breathing humans, I came across a 2020 article from Penn State discussing research costs in suborbital space (which is where Virgin Galactic flies, because its spaceplanes lack the power to maintain orbital velocity).
According to Penn State graduate fellow Benjamin Donovan, a single suborbital rocket mission "typically costs less than $5 million," which is a lot less than what some longer space experiments might cost, but a lot more than the $250,000 or even $450,000 price of a tourist seat on Delta. And if Virgin Galactic can substitute four such suborbital research projects per passenger seat removed, well, the math speaks for itself:
The math is simple: 4 x $5 million = $20 million. Meaning Virgin Galactic can earn more money flying cargo than flying tourists.
In fact, even if this cost estimate is off by an order of magnitude and Virgin Galactic can only charge, say $2 million to carry a stack of four research projects sub-orbitally, that's still a 5x improvement over the revenue it could generate from carrying a single tourist to space and back. That's a strong argument in favor of Virgin favoring cargo over tourists in its spaceflights.
If you can't beat 'em, avoid 'em
The argument for Virgin Galactic exiting the space tourism game entirely, or simply scaling back its tourist ambitions, gets even stronger when you consider how badly Virgin is losing this race already. While Unity sits in mothballs, and Virgin works feverishly to get Delta ready for flight, rival space tourism company Blue Origin just keeps launching New Shepard rockets packed full of space tourists.
To date, Blue Origin has already flown nine flights, carrying 47 tourists to space, versus Virgin Galactic's seven successful tourism flights. At the same time, SpaceX has entered the space tourism game through collaborations with Shift4 Payments and Axiom Space, and is also making progress on its orbital-class Starship spacecraft, which could carry tourists into space 100 at a time.
As competition heats up in space tourism, it may be time for Virgin Galactic to reexamine its business model and find a better and more profitable use for its spaceplanes.

Notable Wednesday Option Activity: MDB, TMO, SPCE

Virgin Galactic (NYSE: SPCE) announced third-quarter earnings last week, and the news was not great.
On the one hand, the space tourism company confirmed that the "build phase" of its new fleet of Delta-class spaceplanes is "underway," it's shifting to design work on its new "mothership," and the company is on course to begin commercial flights in 2026 -- all good news. Yet, Virgin Galactic stock closed down for the week regardless.
The reason for that was the earnings themselves.
Virgin Galactic is still losing money
Virgin Galactic's Unity spaceplane flew its last batch of space tourists on the Galactic 07 flight this past June, and entered into retirement shortly thereafter. The company hasn't flown a single paying customer to space since, and won't be able to until it completes construction and testing of its new Delta-class spaceplanes, and the motherships to carry them.
Unsurprisingly, then, Virgin Galactic collected almost no revenue this past quarter (just $402,000). Granted, with no flights happening, Virgin's costs declined steeply (down 29%). Still, the company had to spend something for development efforts on the new space tourism fleet, and operating costs totaled $82.1 million.
On the bottom line, Virgin Galactic lost $72.7 million -- $2.66 per share -- despite growing its share count dramatically, and spreading its losses out among 49% more shares than it had a year ago.
Virgin Galactic also noted that its cash burn rate accelerated to $118 million in the quarter, which isn't great news. On the plus side, the company has $744 million in cash and equivalents. Assuming a constant burn rate, that would keep the company in business for another six quarters -- just long enough to bridge the gap between now and 2026, when Delta-class spaceplanes are supposed to start flying. On the minus side, though, management actually expects cash burn to keep rising, predicting it will burn somewhere between $115 million and $125 million this current fourth quarter.
If you can't sell rocket rides, sell stock
Long story short, even if everything goes right and Virgin Galactic's cash does last until 2026, it's going be tight and there's no room for error. And, of course, there's the old "space is hard" adage to consider. Everything is probably not going to go right for Virgin Galactic. Delays will crop up, test flights will encounter glitches, and a return to commercial spaceflight could very well get pushed back -- maybe only to later in 2026, but also maybe into 2027 or later.
How does Virgin Galactic plan to mitigate that risk? By selling more stock.
No sooner had it reported Q3 earnings than Virgin Galactic announced it will issue and sell another $300 million worth of stock "from time to time." The company says the money will be used to build both "an additional mothership" and a "third and fourth Delta" spaceplane (implying that management believes its current cash will suffice to build its first two Deltas, and its first new mothership as well), and to pay for "general corporate purposes."
Left unsaid was the fact that raising $300 million at Virgin's current $7 share price implies this will require issuing roughly 42 million new shares. That is (checks notes) a whopping 50% more shares than Virgin Galactic currently has outstanding, by the way. Therefore, this means Virgin Galactic will dilute its existing shareholders by a staggering 150%!
What's next for Virgin Galactic?
So should you buy or sell Virgin Galactic stock now?
I think by now I've made my thoughts on that question clear. (Hint: I say "sell".) I have to say that the company's latest news doesn't really change my thinking.
On the one hand, $300 million in new cash ensures Virgin Galactic should remain solvent throughout 2026 -- even if it misses its deadline for a return to spaceflight, but still launches before 2027. On the other hand, even if Virgin Galactic succeeds in getting back to business, investors will own much, much less of any future profits the company might earn, because of the dilution.
Considering that even in a best-case scenario, I don't see Virgin Galactic ever becoming more than marginally profitable to begin with, I really see no reason to own this stock.

Shocking News (But No, Not Really): Virgin Galactic Needs More Money

In trading on Monday, aerospace & defense shares were relative leaders, up on the day by about 3.6%. Leading the group were shares of Virgin Galactic Holdings, up about 23.6% and shares of Archer Aviation up about 13.6% on the day.
Also showing relative strength are diagnostics shares, up on the day by about 2.9% as a group, led by RadNet, trading up by about 18.4% and LifeMD, trading higher by about 14.2% on Monday.
