Shares of electric vehicle (EV) battery start-up Solid Power (NASDAQ: SLDP) were moving higher on Thursday after rival QuantumScape (NYSE: QS) announced a new deal with Volkswagen (OTC: VWAGY).
As of 11 a.m. ET today, Solid Power's shares were up about 13.5% from Wednesday's closing price.
Solid Power's stock is moving on a rival's big news
Colorado-based Solid Power is working to develop better EV batteries. The company's investors include automakers Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and BMW (ETR: BMW). It also has a manufacturing partnership with Korean battery maker SK Innovation, which supplies several major automakers, including Ford, with EV batteries.
Solid Power itself didn't make news on Thursday. But its stock tends to move in tandem with that of another EV battery start-up, QuantumScape. Like Solid Power, QuantumScape is working to commercialize so-called solid-state batteries, which promise to make future EVs safer, lighter, and quicker to recharge.
Volkswagen is a key investor in QuantumScape, which -- like Solid Power -- is still finalizing development of its solid-state battery design. Under the deal announced on Thursday, VW's battery company, PowerCo, now has the right to produce up to 80 gigawatt-hours of QuantumScape-designed batteries per year under license. That's enough to power about 1 million EVs.
What QuantumScape's deal really means for Solid Power
For QuantumScape, the new deal is a vote of confidence from Volkswagen and an important step toward mass production, although the companies didn't share a timeline.
For Solid Power, the deal doesn't mean much by itself. But it reminded investors that solid-state battery technology is now closer to moving out of the laboratories and into EVs that consumers can buy.

Solid Power Stock Is Surging on News From a Rival

It was another wild week for electric vehicle (EV) stocks as the market swung between fear and greed. Automakers are still struggling with weak demand and falling margins, but some suppliers are seeing a brighter future as interest rates decline.
Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) was the big loser this week, falling as much as 19.6%, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence, and closing the week down 19.2%. But not everything was down as Solid Power (NASDAQ: SLDP) shares jumped as much as 17.4% and ChargePoint (NYSE: CHPT) stock was up 10.1%. Shares of the two companies closed the week up 13% and 3.6%, respectively.
EV demand sags
Shares of Li Auto fell in large part due to the company announcing a drop in demand for vehicles. Management said lower order intake led them to reduce first-quarter 2024 delivery guidance from 100,000 to 103,000 vehicles to a range of 76,000 to 78,000.
This came at the same time Fisker warned it may need to find a buyer or financing options to survive as a going concern.
Over the last few weeks, we have seen Li lower guidance, a price war in China that's impacting BYD and Tesla, and Rivian announcing the delay of its Georgia plant. There's clearly a trend of demand not keeping up with supply, which is why margins are down and stocks are falling.
Suppliers see upside
ChargePoint had a great start to the week only to see shares fall on Friday in part because the CFO sold shares to cover tax obligations.
The reason ChargePoint and Solid Power were up was in part because investors think the Federal Reserve will lower rates multiple times this year after the latest Fed meeting. Interest rates had risen in 2024 as investors feared rate cuts would be put off, but for now that speculation has been put aside.
The 10-year government bond rate has fallen 11 basis points in the past month and dropped five basis points on Friday, which could help make it less costly to buy a vehicle. And with demand in question, any sign of more affordability would be good for EV stocks.
While individual automakers may struggle because supply has outpaced demand, the EV industry is growing, and that means the need for more chargers and batteries. That's the case for ChargePoint and Solid Power this week, despite their mounting financial losses.
Uncertainty for the EV market
The question for this year will be how much these companies can grow and whether or not they'll be profitable anytime soon. Li Auto's guidance reduction of nearly 25% this late in the quarter is a shocking admission that demand isn't as high as a lot of investors think for EVs right now. And margins were already falling across the industry before this announcement.
I think the EV industry is in for a rough year, and not all companies will survive. Fisker has said it needs a cash infusion, and it's not the only one burning more cash than it has on hand. Investors need to beware that these are manufacturing companies that will struggle when demand falls well below supply, which is where we're headed in 2024.

Everything You Need to Know About EV Stocks This Week

LONDON/DETROIT, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Volkswagen, whose drive to develop a "solid-state" electric car battery with U.S. startup QuantumScape has been dogged by delays, is casting its net wider in pursuit of the potentially game-changing technology.
The German auto giant is holding talks with France's Blue Solutions, which already produces solid-state batteries for Daimler electric buses, about adapting the design for cars, a source with direct knowledge of the discussions told Reuters.
VW VOWG.DE and Blue Solutions aim to reach a joint development agreement in the coming months, according to the source who asked not to be identified as the talks are private.
Volkswagen's move to widen its options in the field points to the array of technical hurdles holding back wider development of solid-state technology, seen by its backers as the "holy grail" of EV batteries, promising longer driving ranges and shorter charging times than traditional lithium-ion packs.
VW said its venture with QuantumScape QS.N was on track and declined to comment when asked about any discussions with Blue Solutions.
A spokesperson for Blue Solutions, a unit of French conglomerate Bollore BOLL.PA, confirmed that it was working on a battery for passenger cars and said it had signed development deals with BMW BMWG.DE and another company, and was in talks with a third, but declined to identify the others.
VW, Toyota 7203.T, BMW and other global automakers are vying to crack the conundrum of solid-state batteries, which remain technically elusive despite decades of research and billions of dollars of investment.
"A lot of promises haven't been delivered and several automakers and investors have been burnt," said Rory McNulty at consultancy Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. "There's loads of really good verified data and technology, but can they (the industry) do it reliably, at scale?"
Blue Solutions, for its part, faces stiff challenges to radically bring down the four-hour charging time required by its current batteries, which is feasible for buses parked overnight in depots. The company's spokesperson told Reuters it was working on a passenger car battery with a charging time of 20 minutes, and aimed to construct a "gigafactory" for it by 2029.
The sector's lack of commercial success has dampened market enthusiasm; the amount of global venture capital deal activity in solid-state battery companies fell 72% last year to $146 million, according to data from PitchBook.
"Investor interest in solid state batteries has waned. They are questioning whether the risk of solid state is worth it," Ibex Investors partner Jeff Peters said.
QUANTUMSCAPE: STILL A LOT OF WORK
Solid state ideally envisions replacing the liquid electrolyte though which the electrical charge passes in lithium-ion EV batteries with a solid substitute, thus reducing a fire hazard and shrinking the size of battery packs, and using lithium metal for its negative terminal to boost performance.
Gauging precisely the right combination of chemicals and materials so they don't react adversely with each other is a minefield, though.
QuantumScape's venture with its top shareholder VW, which has invested $300 million in the startup, is an example how solid-state technology has failed to live up to its initial promise.
The development deal signed in 2018 envisaged solid-state powering Volkswagen EVs by 2025, enabling the e-Golf to more than double its range to 750 km. When QuantumScape subsequently went public via a reverse merger with a special purpose acquisition company in New York in 2020, it said it was aiming for commercial battery production in 2024.
Yet mass commercial production remains a distant prospect, even after QuantumScape shipped its first prototypes to VW and other prospective customers in late 2022, the start of what is typically a multi-year process of testing and certification.
Furthermore, the battery isn't pure solid state since it uses a liquid electrolyte though uses ceramic to separate the positive and negative terminals.
"We still have a lot of work to do," QuantumScape's CEO Jagdeep Singh told Reuters. "The prototype is meant to show the core functionality is there, not that the cell is fully ironed out in terms of all the different defects that can be introduced during the production process."
QuantumScape's shares, which hit a peak of $132.70 in December 2020, have since sunk to $7.37, giving the company a market value of about $3.6 billion. It has not said when it expects high-volume commercial production. Goldman Sachs said this was likely in the latter part of the decade.
QuantumScape said in a regulatory filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last October that it had missed commercialization timeline milestones envisaged in the 2018 deal with VW, and that the German automaker thus had the right to terminate the joint venture should it choose to.
TOYOTA FLAGS BREAKTHROUGH
Volkswagen and QuantumScape aren't the only players that have pared their ambitions as they grapple with the technical complexities of solid state.
Toyota, the world's biggest automaker ahead of VW, had targeted a 2025 production startup date for its solid-state batteries, but said in June it now does not expect to produce the cells at scale before 2027 or 2028.
The Japanese company nonetheless said it had achieved a technical breakthrough, without providing details beyond a projected driving range of 750 miles or more and charging time of 10 minutes.
Several other companies have plans to roll out solid-state batteries including Chinese battery leader CATL 300750.SZ, LG Energy Solution, Solid Power SLDP.O, ProLogium, Honda 7267.T and Nissan 7201.T. (see accompanying FACTBOX)
EV market leader Tesla TSLA.O is an industry outlier in not having detailed any solid-state battery development plans.
A key issue solid-state scientists have been grappling with is the impact of introducing lithium metal for the anode.
Lithium metal can dramatically lift performance, but often sparks reactions with the solid compounds, including creating dendrites, spiky formations that create cracks and imperfections and can ultimately short-circuit a battery.
Battery makers, automakers and researchers have tried using a variety of substances for the solid electrolyte in three main categories: polymers, sulfides and oxides.
Some companies have already rolled out partial versions of solid-state batteries that offer some benefits of the technology. China's EV firms Nio 9866.HK and Seres have both launched EV models with "semi-solid-state" batteries which have both solid and gel-like electrolyte components but do not use lithium metal anodes.

Beyond QuantumScape: Can the Competition Catch Up?

Investors have been concerned about slowing growth in electric vehicle (EV) sales. One reason is the lack of charging infrastructure. But battery maker Solid Power (NASDAQ: SLDP) is one of several companies that hopes to have a long-term solution.
Solid Power shares popped today after fellow solid-state battery maker QuantumScape (NYSE: QS) announced some game-changing news. As of 2:45 p.m. ET, Solid Power shares were higher by 11.2%.
Ending range anxiety
That move was dwarfed, however, by the 47% spike in QuantumScape shares at that time. The stock was soaring after a battery unit of partner and potential customer Volkswagen Group said tests confirmed that the solid-state battery technology it is testing for QuantumScape achieved more than 1,000 charging cycles without losing virtually any charging capacity.
That equates to over 300,000 miles an electric car could travel without losing any battery range. With most existing EVs having a range of 250 to 300 miles, many consumers have remained shy of transitioning to an EV for fear of running low without a place to charge. Solid-state technology could be the answer, and Volkswagen's PowerCo unit's confirmation of that performance -- at least in a laboratory test setting -- has investors piling into names in that sector today.
Not there yet
That helps explain why competitor Solid Power's stock popped today too. But even QuantumScape doesn't expect to be able to commercialize its technology for about two more years. Solid Power has partnered with BMW for testing but doesn't expect to be able to scale its battery cells to a high-volume production level until 2028.
Those lengthy timelines are why even speculative investors have sold shares in these stocks over the past year. But both Solid Power and QuantumScape have sufficient liquidity to continue to have automakers testing the technology.
If solid-state batteries are able to extinguish range anxiety, there will be plenty of upsides for shares of both Solid Power and QuantumScape. That's a big "if" though, so any investment should be considered completely speculative, even after today's positive gains.

Is Solid Power a Buy After QuantumScape's Massive News?

Micro-cap stocks are defined as companies with a market valuation of $50 to $300 million. These stocks, therefore, represent early-stage companies with a small equity base. Two more things follow.
First, micro-cap stocks carry an extremely high risk; a small part of the portfolio should be allocated to these names. I would compare micro-cap stocks to investing in a decent cryptocurrency project.
Further, the returns in micro-cap stocks can be multi-fold if the companies they represent deliver and grow at a stellar pace. Given the risk involved, I would not consider more than 5% to 10% portfolio exposure to these stocks. That’s, however, enough to boost overall portfolio returns as I am focused on micro-cap stocks with 10x potential.
Talking about the investment horizon is challenging. The best idea is to review business developments every quarter for further conviction on the idea. However, I believe these micro-cap stocks can deliver 10x returns within the next 36 months.
Let’s discuss the reasons to be optimistic.

(NASDAQ:SLDP) stock has plunged 67% in the last 12 months. The company is working toward potential commercialization of solid-state batteries. If successful, returns in SLDP stock can be multi-fold. This looks like a good accumulation opportunity with a deep correction and positive business developments.
In a big development, Solid Power has made its “first A-1 EV cell deliveries to BMW (OTCMKTS:BMWYY) to enter automotive qualification formally.” If results are positive from validation testing, it’s likely to be a big boost for the stock. I must add that Ford (NYSE:F) is another automotive player backing the company.
I also like that Solid Power has $422 million in cash buffer. That’s more than the company’s market valuation. The cash buffer will ensure no equity dilution is needed in the next 12 to 24 months. Further, the backing of BMW and Ford may help scale operations if the company’s technology is proven.
Bitfarms (BITF)

(NASDAQ:) trades at a market capitalization of just over $300 million. Considering its strong fundamentals, I wanted to discuss the bullish thesis for Bitfarms. It’s difficult to find stocks micro-cap stocks with above average fundamentals.
To put things into perspective, Bitfarms reported a liquidity buffer of $65.8 million as of Q3 2023. Further, the company expects to be debt-free by February 2024. High financial flexibility will allow Bitfarms to pursue aggressive Bitcoin mining capacity expansion next year.
The second reason to like Bitfarms is that a Bit rally is impending in Bitcoin. Standard Chartered believes the cryptocurrency can touch $120,000 by the end of 2024. If this holds true, BITF stock can easily do 10x from current levels.
For Q3 2023, Bitfarms reported revenue and EBITDA of $35 million and $7 million, respectively. The company is a low-cost Bitcoin miner, and if the digital asset surges, EBITDA margin expansion will be significant. It’s, therefore, a good time to consider exposure to the stock for multibagger returns.
Vertical Aerospace (EVTL)

(NYSE:) stock is among the lesser-known names in the flying car industry. Overall, it’s been a good year for some of the best EVTL stocks. However, EVTL stock has declined 75% due to concerns of cash burn and dilution of equity. The correction is overdone, and the micro-cap stock looks interesting at 80 cents.
It’s worth noting that Vertical Aerospace is targeting 2026 as the year for commercial launch of its flying cars. However, the company claims to have a pre-order for 1,400 aircraft, which implies an order book of $5.5 billion. Recently, South Korean mobility firm Kakao Mobility ordered up to 50 VX4 aircraft.
For now, the challenge is to navigate the regulatory hurdles. At the same time, the company would need a continuous cash infusion to maintain operations. If the business progress remains steady, 10x returns from current levels would not be a distant target.

3 Micro-Cap Stocks With 10-Bagger Potential

Value penny stocks have been associated with blockbuster returns in bull markets. Back in 2021, many penny stocks doubled or tripled in a matter of weeks.
Of course, we are not in a similar bull market that’s characterized by euphoria among investors. However, several value penny stocks can deliver 5x or 10x returns in the next five years. This is a conservative estimate, and returns can be higher if a few impending catalysts for the business play out.
In making the above point, it’s also clear that I am not discussing purely speculative penny stocks. My idea is to look at promising businesses at an early growth stage. There are likely to be headwinds, but if progress remains steady, a lot of value creation is expected in the long term. Let’s, therefore, discuss the reasons to be bullish on these value penny stocks.
Value Penny Stocks: Cronos Group (CRON)

Cronos Group (NASDAQ:) looks massively undervalued among cannabis penny stocks. I would expect CRON stock to deliver multibagger returns from current levels of $1.95. Besides being oversold, Cronos has reported positive business developments that will support a rally from current levels.
I must mention at the onset that Cronos has a cash buffer of $840 million. The cash buffer is higher than the current market valuation of Cronos. This can be utilized for aggressive organic and acquisition-driven growth in a federal-level cannabis legalization scenario.
For Q3 2023, Cronos reported revenue growth of 22% on a year-on-year basis to $24.8 million. Adjusted EBITDA losses also narrowed as compared to Q3 2022. With cost-cutting measures, Cronos has guided for positive net change in cash for 2024. This is an important catalyst for CRON stock trending higher.
It’s noteworthy that Cronos launched the Peace Naturals brand in Germany. Further, the Company has a presence in Israel. As Cronos expands beyond Canada, growth is likely to accelerate further.
Standard Lithium (SLI)

(NYSE:SLI) stock is a potential 10x in the next five years if business developments remain positive. The early-stage miner has been depressed as lithium metal prices have corrected during the year. However, lithium’s long-term outlook remains positive, and SLI stock will likely create immense value.
In October, the Company announced the highest confirmed lithium-grade brine in East Texas. It’s also worth noting that the Company commands a market valuation of $490 million. I must add that the net present value of the South West Arkansas project is $4.5 billion. If the NPV of other assets is also considered, SLI stock should be 10x from current levels based on asset valuation.
However, the markets will focus on the commercialization timeline. If the project progress is steady, it will translate into meaningful stock upside. I expect Standard Lithium to dilute equity, but that’s not a concern considering the cash flow potential from the assets.
Kinross Gold (KGC)

(NYSE:KGC) stock is an undervalued gold miner that trades marginally above $5. I am tempted to talk about KGC stock, considering a forward price-earnings ratio of 13.3. Further, the penny stock offers a dividend yield of 2.26%.
First, it’s important to understand that gold has been in a period of extended consolidation at around $2,000 an ounce. I am bullish on the precious metal with geopolitical tensions and the expectations of rate cuts in 2024. If gold surges by 15% to 20% from current levels, KGC stock will double.
From a fundamental perspective, Kinross has a robust liquidity buffer of $2 billion as of Q3 2023. Further, Kinross reported an operating cash flow of $406.8 million for the quarter. If gold trends higher next year, OCF visibility will be more than $2 billion.
Robust flexibility positions Kinross to pursue aggressive organic and acquisition-driven growth. The stock will likely surge if production growth visibility accelerates for 2025 and beyond.
Plug Power (PLUG)

I didn’t expect (NASDAQ:PLUG) to be listed among penny stocks. PLUG stock seems oversold after plunging by 75% in the last 12 months. It’s worth noting that the stock has a short interest of 26.5%, and I expect a massive short-squeeze rally.
It’s important to note that Plug Power has ambitious growth plans. From current year revenue of $1.2 billion, the Company expects to boost revenue to $20 billion by 2030. It’s therefore surprising to see the stock plummet.
I believe that there are two reasons for this deep correction. First, financing growth is a concern. If the Company can boost its liquidity buffer, the stock outlook will change. Further, there is a gap between planning and execution. The markets will wait to see the execution capabilities. Additionally, cash burn is a concern and requires an infusion of funds.
Therefore, there is no doubt that the risk is high, but I would consider some exposure. The hydrogen economy has growth tailwinds, and if Plug Power can deliver on its plans, returns will be multibagger.
Solid Power (SLDP)

(NASDAQ:SLDP) is another value penny stock to buy after a correction of 70% in the last 12 months. A simple investment thesis for SLDP stock would be the commercialization of solid-state batteries. If the Company is successful by 2026 or 2027, SLDP stock can deliver 20x or 30x returns from current levels. It’s, therefore, a risk worth taking.
I am encouraged by the fact that the Company has the backing of big automotive players like Ford (NYSE:) and BMW (OTCMKTS:BMWYY). In a major development, the Company has made its first A-1 EV cell deliveries to BMW to formally enter automotive qualification. Positive results from validation testing can be a game changer.
It’s worth mentioning that in December 2022, the Company licensed its cell design and technology to BMW for parallel research and development. This will help in accelerating the path towards commercialization.
As of Q3 2023, Solid Power reported a cash buffer of $443 million. This will ensure that no dilution is needed in the next 12 to 18 months.
Bitfarms (BITF)
(NASDAQ:) stock has surged by 200% year-to-date. The stock, however, remains undervalued at current levels of $1.3. If (BTC-USD) continues to trend higher, BITF stock can deliver multibagger returns in the next few quarters.
Bitfarms is a Bitcoin miner, and the micro-cap stock has a robust liquidity buffer of $65.8 million as of Q3 2023. The Company also expects to be debt-free by February 2024. Therefore, with high financial flexibility, Bitfarms is positioned to pursue aggressive growth.
For Q3 2023, Bitfarms reported revenue and EBITDA of $35 million and $7 million, respectively. The Company is a low-cost Bitcoin miner, and the EBITDA margin can be significantly higher than 20% in the coming quarters. As cash flows swell, the stock is likely to be revalued.
I must add that as of March 2022, the Company’s mining capacity was 2.7EH/s. Bitfarms targets to expand capacity to 7EH/s by March 2024. This will translate into healthy growth and the addition of digital assets to the balance sheet.
Blink Charging (BLNK)

In the last month, Blink Charging (NASDAQ:) stock has surged by 46%. The rally from deeply oversold levels has been on the back of positive business metrics. I remain bullish on the stock for the coming quarters.
For Q3 2023, Blink reported revenue growth of 152% on a year-on-year basis to $43.4 million. For the same period, the Company reported a gross margin of 29.5%. With a presence in the U.S. and Europe, I expect revenue growth to remain stellar in the coming years.
However, BLNK stock is likely to trend higher due to the following factors: The Company expects to achieve positive adjusted EBITDA by December 2024. Of course, with operating leverage, margin expansion will likely be robust beyond 2024. Blink will also benefit from swelling recurring services revenue as the number of operational charging stations swells. It’s, therefore, a good time to consider exposure to BLNK stock.
