Welcome to Virginia, LC-3
On Thursday morning, Aug. 28, Rocket Lab officially opened its third "launch complex" in the world, LC-3, at the Virginia Spaceport Authority's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island, just off the Virginian eastern seaboard.
LC-3 will be home to Rocket Lab's newest and biggest rocket, the 141-foot-tall, methane-and-liquid oxygen-fueled Neutron. Capable of lifting 13 metric tons to low Earth orbit, Neutron will be 43 times more powerful than its little brother (and Rocket Lab's current only rocket), the Electron. Neutron is scheduled to make its inaugural test flight from LC-3 later this year.
Of course, all of this we already knew about Neutron. We've know this since Rocket Lab CEO Sir Peter Beck promised the rocket was coming, four years ago. But here are three things you probably didn't know about Rocket Lab stock and Neutron., things I only learned myself by attending the LC-3 ribbon-cutting last week.
From MARS to Mars
As Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin pointed out in his opening speech before assisting with the ribbon-cutting, Neutron will be launching from a site at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport -- "MARS," the spaceport. And as CEO Beck observed, bigger rockets can send bigger payloads farther distances -- including to Mars, the planet.
Rocket Lab actually already has two satellites built and ready to go to Mars, as part of the ESCAPADE science mission for the University of California Berkeley's Space Science Laboratory and NASA. What it hasn't had is a rocket big enough to get them there, and delays caused by trying to hitch rides on other companies' rockets -- SpaceX's Falcon Heavy and Blue Origin's New Glenn -- have delayed the mission.
Neutron, when it's ready, could solve that problem by giving Rocket Lab a way to get to Mars under its own power.
Targeting SpaceX
With 43 times the payload capacity of Electron, which can itself often carry multiple small satellites at a time to orbit, Rocket Lab's Neutron rocket is often described as ideal for the deployment of Earth orbit satellite constellations. Rocket Lab's most recent descriptions of the medium-lift rocket, however, suggest the company is preparing to compete with rivals such as SpaceX and Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) in the "cargo resupply" market as well.
Resupply whom, you may ask? Well, the International Space Station is the party most obviously in need of regular resupply runs, and currently, SpaceX and Northrop Grumman are fulfilling that function. NASA has indicated openness to allowing other companies to bid on Commercial Resupply Services contracts, however, awarding one to Sierra Nevada Corporation in 2016, for example. Nearly a decade later, Sierra Nevada has yet to actually perform a resupply mission.
Seems to me that opens up a gap that Rocket Lab may soon be able to fill.
Uncle Sam is looking for a few good astronauts
Arguably the biggest reveal of last week's LC-3 opening, though, was a heavy hint Rocket Lab dropped as to a previously unexpected aspiration: putting astronauts in orbit.
Describing the missions it hopes Neutron to perform once it starts launching, Rocket Lab named all the things we've already discussed -- launching constellations, visiting other planets, "and eventually human spaceflight," too.
This revives an early hope that Neutron might give NASA and other space-users a third way to send astronauts to space, in addition to SpaceX's Crew Dragon and Boeing's (NYSE: BA) ill-starred Starliner.
Admittedly, Rocket Lab stopped short of giving any real detail on its plans to develop a human-rated spacecraft for Neutron to carry. Just the hint it did drop at the LC-3 opening, though, already has investors talking about what Rocket Lab's plans might be along these lines, which could run the gamut from helping to keep space stations crewed, to sending astronauts to the moon or Mars, or even conducting space tourism around Earth.

The fast-growing space flight company's stock is up well over 600% in the last 12 months, driven by increased launches and progress for its new, larger rocket -- the Neutron. With the U.S. government backing the company with grants and contracts, investors are betting big that Rocket Lab can be one of the next big space contractors, taking advantage of this fast-growing sector.

Big investments, government support
Space economy companies have built a huge backlog of contracts to send devices such as satellites into orbit. Except for SpaceX, the actual rocket launch providers have fallen well behind the demand for launch contracts, creating a monopoly for the privately held company valued at $400 billion. Plus, SpaceX is now competing with its customers on its Starlink satellite internet service.
This has created an opportunity for new rocket launch providers to enter the sector if only they could start reliably launching for these customers. Rocket Lab has inched its way ahead of the pack as the second viable solution for satellite providers with its Electron system. This small payload rocket just performed its 70th mission and has a sizable backlog of customers across the U.S. government and private commercial players.
Along with Rocket Lab's space systems segment that helps manufacture items like satellites for these contract customers, Rocket Lab's revenue has exploded higher. Since going public in 2021, overall sales are up a cumulative 800% to $504 million. This makes Rocket Lab one of the fastest-growing businesses in the world.
Seeing this performance has made the U.S. government interested in Rocket Lab as the next key space contractor. It recently granted Rocket Lab a $24 million award for building semiconductors and sensors for space systems in order to maintain a homegrown supply chain. Along with large contracts across various government agencies, the government has a stake in helping Rocket Lab succeed as a company.
Keep a close eye on the Neutron rocket
Even though Rocket Lab is the only other launch provider besides SpaceX regularly performing missions, it is still a small player due to the size of the Electron rocket. But Rocket Lab is in the process of developing and testing its next rocket type called the Neutron that will come with over 10 times the payload capacity of the Electron. This will greatly increase the contract size of each mission, which will lead to more revenue-generating potential for Rocket Lab and the potential to steal contracts from SpaceX.
Management believes it will perform its first test flight for the Neutron later this year. It recently unveiled a new launch facility for the Neutron in Virginia, a huge step forward toward testing. Investors need to watch the development of the Neutron closely as it will bring about the next leg of growth for Rocket Lab. The Electron is great, but it is still a niche product.
The Neutron will allow Rocket Lab to directly compete with SpaceX. At an estimated per-launch revenue of $50 million or more, the Neutron can also lead to a huge boost in revenue if Rocket Lab can start regularly launching the rocket multiple times per year.
Is it too late to invest in Rocket Lab stock?
For investors looking at Rocket Lab's business, the future looks bright. It is developing innovative space technology, has the wind at its back from industry demand, and has the U.S. government supporting its product development. I wouldn't be surprised if Rocket Lab were generating well over $1 billion in revenue within a few years time.
The problem comes when looking at Rocket Lab's valuation. The stock has a market cap of $24 billion, or a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 47. This is a premium valuation -- to put it lightly -- and it means that investors are placing high expectations on future growth for this space stock. Launching rockets is not a high-margin business, either. Rocket Lab's gross margin is just above 30%, a figure it expects to keep climbing but likely not exceed the 40% to 50% range over the long term.
Low gross margins limit Rocket Lab's bottom-line profit potential. Even if the company reaches $5 billion in annual revenue, a 10% bottom-line margin equates to just $500 million in annual earnings, or a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 48, meaning the stock would still trade at a premium earnings multiple even if revenue goes up by 10 times.
It is clear that Rocket Lab is overvalued today. Investors should avoid buying the stock after its monster run over the past 12 months.

Rocket Lab: A Space Leader
Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock Rocket Lab Corporation (RKLB) is a leader in the young but fast-growing space industry. Rocket Lab designs, manufactures, builds, and launches rockets and satellites. The company is one of only a handful of vertically integrated private companies that are capable of bringing payload to low Earth orbit. Currently, the company leverages its Electron rocket, a small orbital launch vehicle that achieved its first successful launch seven years ago. Since the January 2018 launch, the Electron vehicle has had numerous successful missions, making it the second most launched US rocket behind Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket.
Rocket Lab Growth Model
Rocket Lab has two main businesses: space systems and launch services. Rocket Lab’s launch services business offers customers a reliable and consistent means of getting to space. Rather than relying on large, expensive rockets, customers can launch satellites to space with the Electron rocket (which just recorded its 70th successful launch). Meanwhile, the space systems business is where the company provides the end-to-end technology necessary to launch a satellite into space. Because Rocket Lab is vertically integrated and provides all the essential technology needed to launch satellites, customers only need to provide the payload (for example, a communication device or a scientific instrument), and Rocket Lab does the rest.
The Space Industry is Going Orbital
Outside of artificial intelligence, the space transport industry may be growing faster than any other industry on Wall Street. For instance, numerous companies are rushing to launch Wi-Fi satellites to space as the world seeks more internet access at higher speeds and in more remote areas. Meanwhile, governments are launching more defense-oriented satellites into space as modern warfare becomes more technologically advanced than ever before.
In 2018, 452 objects were sent to space. By 2024, the number of objects launched to space soared to 2,849! (according to ourworldindata.com).

With the need for reliable space transportation soaring and very few companies successfully able to launch items to space, Rocket Lab is in the sweet spot. Over the past few months, the company has secured several large contracts, including one with the US Space Development Agency to launch 18 satellites into space for more than $500 million. While RKLB does not yet turn a profit, its revenues have more than quintupled since going public in 2022. As the company continues to scale, it should be able to turn the profit spigot on within the next few years.

Rocket Lab is a member of a strong industry that includes SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile (ASTS). Meanwhile, the stock is far outpacing Intuitive Machines (LUNR) from a price action perspective.Currently, RKLB shares have set up a textbook weekly bull flag pattern.

Rocket Lab: Poised for Lift Off?

Shares of the launch services leader are shooting higher today thanks to the company's announcement on Friday afternoon as well as investors' growing confidence in development of the Neutron rocket.

Rocket Lab can take a step toward proving the naysayers wrong this week
Before the weekend, Rocket Lab announced that it's increasing U.S. investments to grow semiconductor manufacturing capacity, which will shore up the supply chain for space-grade solar cells and electro-optical sensors for national security space missions. To help support the initiative, Rocket Lab has received a $23.9 million award under the CHIPS and Science Act.
The second catalyst pushing the space stock higher today is the company's planned opening of the Neutron rocket launch complex in Virginia on Thursday. In February, Bleecker Street Capital released a short report on Rocket Lab that cast doubt on management's timetable for the Neutron. Whereas the company projected mid-2025 for an initial flight of the new medium-lift reusable rocket, Bleecker Street Capital suggested that a first flight would be more likely in 2026.
On Rocket Lab's second-quarter-2025 conference call, management affirmed its expectation that the first launch of the Neutron rocket will occur before the end of the year.
Is it too late to fly with Rocket Lab stock for space economy exposure?
Rocket Lab's announcement regarding increased investments in semiconductor manufacturing is encouraging, as is the opening of the Neutron launch complex this week. The stock's rise today, however, seems a bit of an overreaction.
A successful launch of the Neutron rocket will be a powerful catalyst for Rocket Lab stock since Neutron will be the only competitor to the Falcon 9 from SpaceX. Investors looking to mitigate risk, though, may want to wait for a successful debut of the Neutron rocket before buying Rocket Lab stock.
