REX American Resources Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, produces and sells ethanol in the United States. The company also offers corn, distillers grains, non-food grade corn oil, gasoline, and natural gas. In addition, it provides dry distillers grains with solubles, which is used as a protein in animal feed. The company was formerly known as REX Stores Corporation and changed its name to REX American Resources Corporation in 2010. REX American Resources Corporation was founded in 1980 and is headquartered in Dayton, Ohio.

REX appears to be a financially stable company with very strong liquidity and almost no debt burden, but the market is already pricing in a noticeable quality premium. The year-over-year dynamics rather support the business than undermine it: revenue and EBITDA are generally holding at a stable level, gross profit and operating income remain positive, and TTM net income is still higher than during the weaker periods of last year. But revenue of $164 million is below the industry median, net income of $18 million is also below the industry level, and forecast EPS is weaker than the historical actual, which points to limited growth pace. ROE of 13.56% looks respectable, but still below the industry median, so shareholder returns are not outstanding enough to justify an aggressive premium. The lack of dividend yield removes one of the sources of valuation support for an investor focused on cash return. Overall, the fundamentals are more quality- and defensive-oriented than fast-growing: a strong balance sheet and solid ROA/ROI support the valuation, but expensive multiples and weaker-than-industry margins/revenue limit upside. For the target price, this implies a moderate downgrade, since the current price already reflects a significant portion of the company’s strengths, and the room for further fundamental upside is limited.
