Redwire provides critical components for space and national security
Redwire provides space components and subsystems that enable space exploration and research. With modern warfare expanding into orbit, Redwire is also leaning into defense. Modern deterrence and missile tracking rely on satellites and space imaging, and Redwire manufactures the critical hardware that lets them function.
One example is its Roll-Out Solar Arrays (ROSA), which are 20% lighter and use one-quarter of the storage volume of traditional panels. These have become essential for both defense and space exploration.
Maxar contracted Redwire to build two massive 60 kW ROSA wings for NASA's Power and Propulsion Element (PPE), the highest-power roll-out arrays ever manufactured. NASA repurposed this fully integrated PPE bus for its upcoming deep-space flights, and Redwire's hardware will provide electrical power on the 2028 SR-1 Freedom mission to Mars.
Is Redwire stock a buy right now?
Redwire is seeing strong demand growth. Its backlog has multiyear bookings from NASA and the Department of Defense and has surged to over $542 million. This is a 64.5% increase from last year and represents the fifth consecutive quarter of backlog expansion.
That said, the company is expanding and racking up net losses. For example, it has opened a new microgravity facility in Indiana and expanded its Huntsville, Alabama, facility to scale unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and payload manufacturing.
Redwire has used equity to fund its expansion, including a $500 million at-the-money program to sell stocks from time to time, diluting shareholders in the process. Analysts project net losses in the coming years, making Redwire a risky stock for investors buying today.

Should You Buy Redwire While It's Below $13?

Redwire Corporation RDW is expanding its focus on military communications with a strategic investment in next-generation phased-array antenna technology. In August 2026, the company announced the investment to accelerate the development and production of phased-array antenna systems designed for communications across low Earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO) and geostationary orbit (GEO). The systems are expected to support dynamic beam steering, stronger link reliability and higher data throughput for warfighter communications.
The investment builds on Redwire’s existing radio frequency (RF) capabilities. The company already provides tactical connectivity antennas and RF payloads, including antennas used on the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. Redwire also previously demonstrated a Link-16 signal transmission from space to ground, supporting the exchange of tactical data across military platforms.
Phased-array technology could give RDW another opportunity to participate in the expansion of distributed military satellite networks. Its ability to support multiple orbital environments could broaden the applications of its RF portfolio as defense customers seek communications systems capable of operating across increasingly complex space architectures. Redwire’s RF Systems group also supplies tactical communications and sensing payloads to major aerospace and defense companies, giving the company an established channel for deploying these technologies.
The investment could strengthen Redwire’s position in space-based communications while creating opportunities to expand its role across national security programs. With more than 200 flight antennas already delivered and a major upgrade to its RF flight electronics assembly facilities, RDW is building on an existing technology base rather than entering the market from scratch.
Companies Advancing Phased-Array Defense Communications
Growing demand for resilient military communications is encouraging aerospace and defense companies to advance phased-array technologies for satellite and other contested communications applications. Viasat Inc. VSAT and Northrop Grumman Corporation NOC are also developing capabilities that support secure and resilient communications across defense applications.
Viasat develops active electronically scanned array technologies designed to support multi-band and multi-orbit satellite communications, aligning with the broader push toward flexible and resilient military connectivity.
Northrop Grumman works on SATCOM ground systems and phased-array antenna technologies that assist in military communications, providing another example of how advanced antenna architectures are being integrated into defense networks.

Can Redwire's Phased-Array Investment Drive Defense Growth?

Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) has given investors plenty to get excited about this year. The company's IPO was all the rage this summer, as tech pundits and analysts weighed its impact on the market. But for retail investors, SpaceX has a problem that has little to do with rockets: Its various stakeholders can't sell most of the shares they own -- yet.
When companies go public, their pre-IPO stakeholders -- employees, executives, and other early investors -- can't start selling their shares immediately. Lockup periods are put in place to prevent too many shares from flooding the market in too short a time frame. SpaceX laid out a staggered schedule for the release of those shares over the next year, and the next release date falls on Sept. 9.

As of that day, those early shareholders will be able to sell another 319 million shares. That does not mean every shareholder will sell their newly eligible shares. But it does create a potential technical headwind for a stock that entered the public market with a small effective float. SpaceX's own filing also registered shares held by current and former employees for potential resale, meaning investors have to think about supply as well as demand.
That is one reason I'd rather look for opportunities elsewhere in the space and technology markets today. Three companies stand out because their growth stories are tied to infrastructure that still has to be built.
1. Rocket Lab is building the other end of the launch market
Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) is not trying to replicate SpaceX one-for-one. Its smaller-payload Electron rocket has given the company launch experience, while its larger Neutron vehicle addresses the medium-lift market. Rocket Lab has said Neutron is intended to support constellation deployments, and it already has dedicated launches booked.
The technical opportunity for the company is bigger than selling launches. Rocket Lab is building itself into an end-to-end space company, with launch vehicles, spacecraft, and components under one roof. That vertical integration can matter because satellite operators don't just need a ride to orbit. They need spacecraft, propulsion, power systems, and the ability to replace aging satellites or expand satellite constellations over time.
Neutron is also the major swing factor. Developing a reusable medium-lift rocket is expensive and carries execution risk, but success could earn Rocket Lab an additional layer of recurring launch demand from commercial and government clients.
2. AST SpaceMobile is attacking a different bottleneck
AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS) is taking another approach to the space economy. Instead of selling launches, it is trying to integrate satellites into terrestrial cellular networks.
Its next-generation BlueBird satellites have phased arrays measuring almost 2,400 square feet and are designed to connect directly with ordinary smartphones. The company's architecture uses its proprietary AST5000 chip, which provides up to 10 gigahertz of processing bandwidth per satellite.
What caught my attention is the pace of the company's build-out. AST SpaceMobile launched BlueBirds 8 through 10 in June and BlueBirds 11 through 13 in August. The company says its production system is designed to build six satellites per month and expects to have about 45 in orbit by early next year.
This is still a capital-intensive bet with real technical and regulatory risks. But each successful satellite deployment moves the company closer to a being continuously available network in its chosen markets rather than another technology demonstration.
3. Redwire is selling the infrastructure behind the infrastructure
Redwire (NYSE: RDW) may be the least obvious name here, but that is what makes it interesting.
The company is developing systems that provide power, manufacturing, and other infrastructure for spacecraft. Its new ELSA solar array is designed for mass-produced satellites and can deliver up to 50% more power per unit volume than traditional arrays. Redwire has also won contracts tied to national security satellites and commercial space infrastructure.
SpaceX gets attention because everyone can understand a rocket launch. The less glamorous opportunity may be the companies supplying key components and hardware for satellite constellations.
None of these three companies is as proven as SpaceX. That is the trade-off. Rocket Lab still has to complete its first Neutron launch, AST SpaceMobile has to grow its satellite constellation into a viable communications network, and Redwire has to execute across a growing set of space and defense programs.

The investment also adds another route to defense growth as military customers seek communications that can operate across distributed space architectures. L3Harris Technologies, Inc. LHX likewise offers electronically steered array solutions and secure space communications, illustrating the broader defense industry's focus on resilient connectivity.
RDW Builds on an Established RF Systems Base
Redwire is not starting from zero in radio frequency systems. Its RF Systems portfolio has delivered more than 200 flight antennas, giving the company an established base of space-qualified hardware and customer experience.
Its tactical connectivity antennas are already used on the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. That installed presence provides a relevant platform for extending Redwire's antenna capabilities as phased-array technology matures.
Redwire Broadens Defense Tech Beyond UAS and ISR
The antenna investment arrives while Redwire's autonomous-systems portfolio is scaling. Defense Tech revenues reached $61.9 million in the second quarter of 2026, while segment adjusted EBITDA improved to $14.1 million from a $15 million loss a year earlier.
Repeat Stalker orders, a high eight-figure multi-year Penguin Mk3 contract and nearly 200 Octopus intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance payload deliveries year to date reinforce that momentum. Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. KTOS is also expanding satellite communications capabilities, including multi-orbit ground systems, underscoring the strategic relevance of resilient communications within defense technology.
RDW's Investment Comes During a Capacity Buildout
Redwire is also expanding physical capacity. Its planned 164,000-square-foot Huntsville, AL, expansion will support uncrewed aerial systems, Octopus payloads, advanced energy solutions and space capabilities, linking manufacturing growth with several of the company's priority markets.
Liquidity of $607.8 million at the end of the second quarter gives Redwire greater flexibility to fund internal capability development. The company has described balance-sheet strength and internal innovation as key parts of its investment framework.
Redwire Still Must Convert Investment Into Results
The phased-array announcement did not quantify expected revenues, earnings contribution or a specific program award. Investors therefore have limited financial evidence so far for measuring how quickly the investment could contribute to results.
That matters because Redwire is already spending aggressively. First-half 2026 research and development expense rose to $25.1 million, while free cash flow was negative $48 million. Additional inventory requirements and several simultaneous growth initiatives could keep cash generation uneven during the buildout.
RDW's Neutral Signal Keeps Expectations Grounded
The phased-array initiative can expand Redwire's addressable defense opportunity, but it is still an investment case rather than a demonstrated earnings driver. Existing RF heritage, Defense Tech growth and stronger liquidity improve the strategic fit, while execution and cash-flow demands remain material.
The stated Neutral view keeps the focus on evidence: resilient space communications could become a useful extension of Defense Tech, but the investment does not by itself establish near-term earnings upside.

Redwire's Phased-Array Bet Could Broaden Its Defense Tech Opportunity

Redwire (NYSE: RDW) stock was hardly in the red in the last full month of 2026's summer. In fact, it posted a solid, double-digit gain of 24% across August, helped in no small part by second-quarter earnings that easily topped analyst expectations. The company also continued to secure new contracts, including one with a very prominent name in the space industry.
Soaring sales
Redwire published its earnings release near the start of the month, setting the tone for the remainder of August.

The company's revenue zoomed almost 90% higher year over year to slightly over $117 million. Not surprisingly, given that kind of improvement, that figure set a new Redwire record. Also notching an all-time high was its project backlog, which was 32% higher than the end-2025 level, at over $542 million.
None of this made the still-relatively young company profitable, however. Its net loss under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) came in at nearly $41 million, which, on the bright side, was significantly narrower than the nearly $97 million deficit in the same quarter of last year. On a non-GAAP (adjusted), per-share basis, the loss slimmed to $0.09 from $0.31.
Both headline results convincingly topped the consensus analyst estimates. On average, the pundits tracking Redwire stock were estimating total revenue just shy of $108 million. They believed the company would post a much steeper adjusted net loss of $0.16 per share.
Much of the year-over-year improvements in the fundamentals came from increases in good, old-fashioned project work.
The quarter saw the company sign contracts to supply its Penguin drones to clients such as an unnamed North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) country and the Asian island nation of Taiwan, and complete on-orbit operations for drug development activities for prominent pharmaceutical and biotech companies, among other projects.
Double-digit growth to continue?
With those tailwinds at its back, Redwire was confident enough to maintain its full-year revenue guidance of $450 million to $500 million. This would mean at least 34% growth over the 2025 result.
Looking at the company's announcements in its current (third) quarter alone, this seems eminently achievable. For example, just after earnings, it revealed that its Space Microgravity Development (SpaceMD) unit had signed a collaboration agreement with Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX.
The Elon Musk-led company sold its payload space on a mission of Starfall, the large payload capsule it's currently developing. SpaceMD will then resell the space to drug discovery clients.
The future for this company is exciting, although I'll feel much more confident when and if it consistently posts net profits. I'd say it is a speculative stock at the moment, suitable for investors with a healthy appetite for risk, that has considerable upside potential.

Why Redwire Stock Rocketed 24% Higher in August

But it looks reasonably valued relative to its growth potential.
Shares of Redwire (NYSE: RDW), a producer of critical space mission components, closed at a record high of $25.90 on May 28 as the market's anticipation for SpaceX's (NASDAQ: SPCX) IPO sparked a buying frenzy in space stocks. However, Redwire and many of its industry peers lost their momentum ahead of SpaceX's market debut on June 12 -- and that record-setting IPO exacerbated that pressure by drawing investors away from smaller space stocks.
By July 29, Redwire's stock had sunk to a 52-week low of $7.78. But today, it trades at about $10, so a $1,000 investment at its 2026 low would have grown to nearly $1,300.

Does Redwire have more upside potential?
Redwire develops navigation, power, and 3D-printing components for satellites, space stations, and other spacecraft. It also manufactures military drones and custom components for missile defense and military communications systems.
Before going public, Redwire predicted its revenue could rise from $163 million in 2021 to $1.41 billion in 2025. But in reality, its revenue only rose from $138 million in 2021 to $335 million in 2025. It struggled with negative cost revisions on its fixed-price contracts, delayed government deals, and expensive acquisitions that diluted its investors and squeezed its margins.
Redwire disappointed many investors, but analysts expect its revenue to grow at a 27% 3-year CAGR to $684 million in 2028 as its customers build orbital data centers, launch more satellites, develop new drones, and launch new lunar missions. At five times next year's sales, Redwire also looks cheaper than SpaceX, which trades at 19 times next year's sales.

Redwire Corporation (NYSE: RDW) had a terrific Q2 -- or at least, investors viewed it that way.
Redwire beat sales expectations, reporting $117 million for the quarter earlier this month. Losses were less than expected at only $0.09 per share. Investors cheered -- and shares of the space infrastructure-and-terrestrial drones company soared past $13 a share the day after earnings were released, a one-day gain of nearly 15%.

They've mostly stayed above $13 since that Aug. 5 earnings report, but briefly dipped below that level on Tuesday. Today, the stock is down 7.3% (as of 12:15 p.m.). And now the question for investors is: Should you buy Redwire stock while it's still below $13?
Redwire stock is a rocket
The sales and earnings news for last quarter was only the beginning, too. Proceeding through its report, Redwire described how it flipped from negative gross profit margins a year ago to positive 27.8% this time, and how it added 42% more money entering its backlog as new orders, than exited as revenue -- a book-to-bill ratio of 1.42. And how its backlog of work to be done now stands at $542 million.
That's more than 15 months' work all lined up and ready to be done, at the company's current annual revenue rate of $426 million.
Between the rising backlog and the accelerating rate of new orders, Redwire anticipates growing its sales by up to 49% this year, to perhaps $500 million.
How to value Redwire stock
That's the good news.
The bad news is that analysts polled by S&P Global Market Intelligence think Redwire will need to reach closer to $700 million before it has a chance of becoming profitable. Long-ish range forecasts see the company approaching that mark in 2028, with about $685 million in sales -- but still $10 million in losses. So Redwire will probably have to exceed $700 million in revenue before it reaches breakeven profit under GAAP.
Until that happens, investors won't be able to value Redwire on price-to-earnings, and will have to make do with price-to-sales ratios.
This, unfortunately, is the other bad news. Currently priced at $3.35 billion in market capitalization, Redwire stock sells for 7.9 times trailing sales and 6.7 times its own best estimate of current-year sales. The stock furthermore costs nearly 5 times the sales that analysts forecast for it in 2028 -- two years from now.
All of these valuations, unfortunately, remain well above the 2x-4x sales valuation that investors have historically paid for not-yet-profitable space start-ups like Redwire. For this reason, I continue to view Redwire stock as overvalued.
Tempting as it may be to buy Redwire now that its stock has fallen below $13, I'd need to see it drop to $8 or below before I'd be interested in buying.

Should You Buy Redwire Stock Below $13?

Space stocks are in shambles.
"Led" (in a bad way) by Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX), the space titan built by Elon Musk and IPOed on June 12, shares of space stocks of all stripes have taken a beating over the past couple of months.

Take Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) for example. The space company, often described as a mini-SpaceX, surged from below $5 in May 2024 to more than $140 in May 2026 -- a thirtyfold rise in just two years. Then it plunged more than 50% after the SpaceX IPO.
Or consider AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS), the satellite communications pioneer that proved the concept of cell phone-to-cell phone communications via satellite, with no towers in between. That one rose nearly twelvefold over the same two-year period -- then gave back 20% in the month following SpaceX's titanic IPO.
More targeted space plays such as Redwire Corporation (NYSE: RDW), which builds space infrastructure, and Intuitive Machines (NASDAQ: LUNR), focused on delivering cargo to the moon, gained fourfold in two years and nearly eightfold, respectively, before falling each falling roughly 70% in a month.
Can they bounce back?
SpaceX leads; others follow
Even SpaceX hasn't gone unscathed. After a first few frenzied days of trading that lifted Elon Musk's space empire past $211 a share, sellers arrived in force at SpaceX, driving the shares down nearly into the double digits.
The good news is that SpaceX appears to have found its footing again, closing at $140 Friday and once again above its IPO price. The better news is that many other space stocks are recovering, at least somewhat, alongside the leader.
The best news of all is that, with the U.S. government continuing to pour money into space exploration, there's reason to believe the momentum is sustainable.
NITE-STAR gazing
Case in point: Late last month, the U.S. Space Force announced a $981 million award to be shared among more than a dozen separate space stocks working on the "National Space Test and Training Complex Innovative Technology and Engineering Space Test and Range Capability Development" -- dubbed "NITE-STAR."
(Someone clearly worked overtime trying to make those words fit that acronym.)
Space Force named the following 15 space companies -- 13 of which are publicly traded -- as winners of NITE-STAR, clearing them to bid on future task orders under the umbrella contract, which will span 10 years:
It's not entirely clear what NITE-STAR will entail. The Space Force itself might not be 100% certain, describing the contract's goal vaguely as "advancement of the sophisticated systems and technologies required to keep [Space Force servicemen known as] Guardians ahead of the complexities of a contested space domain."
More importantly for investors, it's less than 100% certain anyone on the above list will book significant, needle-moving wins -- even on this nearly $1 billion contract.
What it means for space investors
Consider that $981 million, spread over 10 years, works out to just $98.1 million per year. And if contracts are evenly distributed, each of the 15 companies might, on average, expect to book as little as $6.5 million per year under the contract.
It goes without saying that $6.5 million won't move the needle for giant space companies such as Boeing, Lockheed, Northrop, or L3Harris. Smaller space-fry such as Firefly, Redwire, or York Space might notice the revenue influx more. But even at York, $6.5 million extra per year will only add about 1.5% to the company's $405 million-a-year revenue stream.
In short, big as this contract appears on the surface, it's not -- in and of itself -- going to be enough to turn things around and start a new bull market in space stocks. Many more contracts, and many much larger contracts, will be needed for that.
Meanwhile, a survey of 15 of the biggest space stocks that I follow shows an average price-to-sales ratio of 65.4. (Even throwing out triple-digit P/S outliers such as AST and Virgin Galactic (NYSE: SPCE) only brings the average P/S down to 19.8.) Valuations remain extreme in this sector.
Investors should be wary. Even after some pretty historic declines, space stocks as a whole aren't yet cheap enough to guarantee a bounce-back.
