Monday Sector Leaders: Defense, Electronic Equipment & Products

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Friday closed down -0.27%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.66%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.17%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) fell -0.33%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) fell -0.21%.
Stock indexes on Friday retreated on the escalation of trade tensions as President Trump ramped up his threats to impose higher tariffs, sparking a risk-off environment in asset markets. Late Thursday, President Trump said a 35% tariff on some Canadian products would take effect on August 1, up from the current 25%. The new Canadian tariffs would not apply to goods traded within the rules of the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement, and a lower 10% tariff would be kept on some energy-related imports. He also said he plans to impose blanket tariffs of 15% or 20% on most US trade partners.

Stocks were also undercut by Friday’s +7 bp rise in the 10-year T-note yield. T-note yields rose on concern that President Trump’s threats to impose higher tariffs on Canada and other US trading partners will lead to higher US inflation that could prevent the Fed from cutting interest rates.
The price of Bitcoin (^BTSUSD) on Friday rallied by more than +3% and posted a new record high. Bitcoin has rallied more than +9% this week after the US House Committee on Financial Services announced on Tuesday that the week of July 14 will be “Crypto Week.” The US House Committee on Ways and Means has planned an oversight subcommittee hearing on July 16 entitled, “Making America the Crypto Capital of the World,” which may lead to more crypto-friendly regulations.
Stocks have been undercut as President Trump vowed to push forward with his aggressive tariff regime, stressing he would not offer additional extensions on country-specific tariffs set to take effect on August 1. Earlier this week, Mr. Trump imposed a 50% tariff on copper imports that will include semi-finished goods, and said that drug companies could face tariffs as high as 200% on imports if they don’t relocate production to the US within the next year. In addition, despite stating that the US was close to a trade deal with India, Mr. Trump said he would still impose a 10% tariff on India’s goods for their participation in BRICS, a group of developing nations he claimed were “set up to hurt” the US.
Another hurdle for stocks is the upcoming earnings season, which begins in earnest next week. Bloomberg Intelligence data show that the consensus for Q2 earnings of S&P 500 companies is for a rise of +2.8% year-over-year, the smallest increase in two years. Also, only six of the eleven S&P 500 sectors are projected to post an increase in earnings, the fewest since Q1 of 2023, according to Yardeni Research.
Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances at 7% for a -25 bp rate cut at the July 29-30 FOMC meeting.
Overseas stock markets Friday were mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell -1.01%. China’s Shanghai Composite climbed to a 9-month high and closed up +0.01%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 fell to a 1-week low and closed down -0.19%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) on Friday fell by -15 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose by +7 bp to 4.419%. T-note prices fell on President Trump’s threats to impose higher tariffs on Canada and other US trading partners, which fueled concern about higher US inflation that could prevent the Fed from cutting interest rates. T-note prices were also undercut after the 10-year German bund yield rose to a 3.25-month high.
European government bond yields moved higher. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 3.25-month high of 2.734% and ended the day up +2.0 bp at 2.725%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +2.6 bp to 4.622%.
UK May manufacturing production fell -1.0% m/m, weaker than expectations of -0.1% m/m and the biggest decline in 10 months.
ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel said, “The bar for another ECB interest rate cut is very high, and there would only be a case for another rate cut if we saw signs of a material deviation of inflation from our target over the medium term. And at the moment, I see no signs of that.”
Swaps are discounting the chances at 1% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the July 24 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks held up fairly well on Friday despite the losses in the main indexes, with only Apple (AAPL) and Meta Platforms (META) showing losses. Alphabet (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN), and Tesla (TSLA) all closed up by more than +1%.
Nvidia (NVDA) rose +0.5% after CEO Huang met President Trump at the White House, ahead of Huang’s trip to China.
Some cryptocurrency stocks rallied as the price of Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) rose more than +3% to a new record high. MicroStrategy (MSTR) rose more than +3% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100.
Drone-related companies climbed after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued orders to ramp up production and deployment of drones. Red Cat Holdings (RCAT) rallied more than +25%, Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (KTOS) rallied more than +11%, and AeroVironment (AVAV) rallied more than +10%.
Airline stocks on Friday moved lower, giving back some of Thursday’s sharp gains that were driven by positive guidance news from Delta. American Airlines Group (AAL) fell more than -5%, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) fell more than -4%, and Alaska Air Group (ALK) fell more than -3%. Delta Air Lines (DAL) fell -0.25% after Thursday’s surge of nearly +12%.
Capricor Therapeutics (CAPR) plunged -33% after the FDA declined to approve the company’s treatment candidate aimed at treating a disease of the heart muscle associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Civista Bancshares (CIVB) fell more than -13% after announcing the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 3.29 million shares of common stock at a price of $21.25 per share, below Thursday’s closing price of $24.82.
Oscar Health (OSCR) fell more than -7% after Wells Fargo Securities downgraded the stock to underweight from equal weight with a price target of $10.
Albemarle (ALB) fell more than -4% after UBS downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $57.
Expeditors International of Washington (EXPD) fell nearly -3% after Bank of America Global Research downgraded the stock to underperform.
Northern Trust Corp (NTRS) fell -0.6% after Keefe, Bruyette & Woods downgraded the stock to underperform from market perform with a price target of $120.
Levy Strauss & Co (LEVI) rose more than +11% after reporting Q2 net revenue of $1.45 billion, stronger than the consensus of $1.37 billion, and raising guidance on its full-year net revenue forecast to up +1% to +2% from a previous forecast of down -1% to -2%.
Performance Food Group (PFGC) rose by more than +4% on reports that the company has attracted takeover interest from US Foods Holding Corp.
Visteon Corp (VC) rose by more than +2% after Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $120.

Red Cat Holdings is a small cap company with a market cap of $701 million which makes drone technology for military, government, and commercial operations.
Shares of Red Cat Holdings are down 41% year-to-date, but the shares have soared 1003% over the last year. It’s a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) but Zacks only has one earnings estimate.

2. Barrick Gold Corp. (GOLD)
Barrick Gold is a large cap global gold miner. Tracey talked about the gold trade, specifically with the miners, in a 2024 podcast because the price of gold was hitting new highs.
Shares of Barrick Gold are up 2.3% year-to-date but have only gained 1.5% over the last year. It’s cheap, with a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 9.7. 2025 earnings are expected to rise 30.3%.

3. Arista Networks Inc. (ANET)
Arista Networks is a leader in data-driven, cloud-to-client networking for large AI, data center, campus, and routing environments. It has a market cap of $163 billion.
Shares of Arista Networks have soared over the last year, rising 93.7%. In 2025, they’re up another 15.9% to new all-time highs. Arista Networks isn’t cheap. It trades with a forward P/E of 53.6. Sales and earnings are expected to rise by the double digits again in 2025.

4. Nio Inc. (NIO)
Nio is a Chinese global smart vehicle manufacturer. It has a market cap of $7.3 billion.
Shares of Nio are down 5.7% year-to-date and have fallen 30.9% over the last year. Nio doesn’t have a P/E ratio because it’s earnings are still negative. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 is calling for a loss of $1.01.
Nio is a Zacks #3 (Hold) stock.

5. Apple Inc. (AAPL)
Apple is a Magnificent 7 stock and is one of the four pillars of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway empire. But shares of Apple have declined 11.3% year-to-date and are now “only” up 15.4% over the last year.
But even though the shares have weakened, Apple is not cheap. It still trades with a forward P/E ratio of 30.1. A P/E ratio under 15 is considered a value.

With that said, most use cases showcasing AIP highlight how large corporations are using Palantir to enhance their data analytics capabilities in areas such as fraud detection, logistics, healthcare, and more. By contrast, one area that's often overlooked is how Palantir is assisting the U.S. military in its AI roadmap.
Let's explore a new partnership Palantir formed with drone specialist Red Cat Holdings (NASDAQ: RCAT), and delve into what makes it unique and why it could be a game-changer for Palantir in the long run.
Why is Red Cat's partnership with Palantir important?
In the age of AI, one of the emerging themes in the defense space is unmanned, autonomous systems. These can include products such as boats, submarines, or aircraft are controlled entirely by AI.
Red Cat is a drone company that specializes in robotics and software development for the U.S. military. The company develops a "Family of Systems" approach to its products and services -- offering an ecosystem of drones, sensors, and cost-efficient services to assist with mission-critical operations, particularly in reconnaissance environments.
Palantir is primarily known for its data analytics chops but also has some more niche products that fly under the radar. One such service includes Palantir's Visual Navigation (VNav). The simplest explanation of VNav is that it's an alternative navigation platform for drones when traditional methods, such as GPS, are unreliable.
As per the partnership with Palantir, Red Cat will be integrating VNav and Palantir's operating system (dubbed Warp Speed) into its Black Widow drones.
The deal with Red Cat likely isn't a coincidence. Just days before the partnership was announced, Palantir also shared that it's partnering with another military-focused autonomous systems developer, Anduril.
How does the partnership change the game?
Over the summer, Wedbush Securities equity research analyst Dan Ives posited an interesting idea when it comes to Palantir's valuation. He suggested that investors should look at Palantir through the lens of a sum-of-the-parts (SOTP) model. In an SOTP analysis, investors should look at each segment of the business individually and apply a separate valuation to each one.
As it relates to Palantir, it can be daunting trying to assess an appropriate value for its public-sector operation. Working with the federal government tends to be lumpy and can be non-recurring in nature, so these types of businesses generally don't fetch valuation premiums as high as a high-growth software company, for example.
Nevertheless, throughout the latter half of 2024, Palantir identified new ways to parlay the type of growth it's experiencing on the commercial side of the business to its public-sector operation. Namely, the company partnered with hyperscalers, including Microsoft and Amazon, which are both deploying their cloud infrastructures on AIP.
Furthermore, Palantir is also strengthening its ties with defense contractors, such as L3Harris Technologies, and government consulting behemoth Booz Allen Hamilton. These strategic partnerships will likely translate into reaccelerating growth across Palantir's public-sector business. More importantly, not only will this lead to higher revenue streams, but it also should help Palantir expand its gross margin and profitability profile.
All told, I see the deal with Red Cat as a game-changer. Palantir is laying the groundwork as the leader in AI-driven protocols for the U.S. military for years to come.

Is Palantir's Deal With Red Cat a Game-Changer?

Developments in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector have generated a lot of headlines over the past couple of years. The abilities of AI systems to create original content, automate processes, and increase productivity have businesses of all stripes eager to secure a part of the resulting windfall.
One company that's well positioned to benefit from this trend is Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR). It has decades of experience creating novel AI solutions, which came in handy when the generative AI trend went mainstream early in 2023. That secular tailwind has been extremely profitable for the company and its shareholders. The stock is up 333% so far this year and up 1,060% since the start of 2023, with its gains driven by robust results and an expanding opportunity.

Positive developments for Palantir were so plentiful over the past week, it's likely that some investors didn't catch all the announcements. So here are four things you may have missed this week.
1. Admission to the Nasdaq-100 index
To kick off the week, Nasdaq announced that Palantir will be added to the Nasdaq-100 index before the market opens on Dec. 23. This was widely expected after Palantir switched its listing from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq last month.
In a press release at the time, Palantir said, "The company expects to begin trading as a Nasdaq-listed company on November 26, 2024 and its common stock will continue to trade under the symbol "PLTR." Upon transferring, Palantir anticipates meeting the eligibility requirements of the Nasdaq-100 Index."
While the listing move was largely a cosmetic change, it could boost demand for Palantir stock, as mutual funds, institutional investors, and exchange-traded funds that track the index will have to buy it.
2. A new partnership
Palantir and Red Cat Holdings (NASDAQ: RCAT) announced a strategic partnership that will see Palantir's Visual Navigation software integrated into Red Cat's Black Widow drone. The company will also deploy Palantir's Warp Speed manufacturing operating system.
"Equipped with Palantir's visual navigation and artificial intelligence, the Black Widow will be among the most capable drones ever fielded by the Department of Defense, compact enough to fit in a rucksack," said Red Cat CEO Jeff Thompson.
The terms of the contract weren't provided.
3. Extending its Army Vantage contract
Palantir announced an extension to its "long-standing partnership with the U.S. Army to deliver the Army Vantage capability in support of the 'Army Data Platform' (ADP)." The platform leverages data and Palantir's AI to accelerate decision-making and improve combat readiness.
While the original contract was focused on personnel and combat readiness, the ADP system has become integral to the Army's data-driven decision-making process. It supports soldiers in a growing list of use cases in areas such as logistics, risk management, recruiting, and financial management. This new agreement will expand the contract to include data across the entire Department of the Army.
The total value of the contract is $400 million, though it could potentially be increased to as much as $618 million over the next four years.
4. Translating faith-based content
On the other side of the war and peace coin, Pray.com chose Palantir to help it with foreign language translations for the company's faith-based content. The company noted the challenge of providing its offerings in a variety of languages, which has been cost-prohibitive due to the staffing requirements and the complexity of local idioms.
Using Palantir's Ontology Software Development Kit, Pray.com was able to process audio and video transcripts and translations "across multiple languages," achieving the "quality of native language speakers." Perhaps equally important, it was able to achieve these results in a matter of minutes, rather than the days or weeks of human efforts its large volumes of translations had previously required.
Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
What it all means for investors
It's important to point out that none of these developments are likely to move the needle for Palantir individually. Taken together, however, they bolster the company's investment thesis.
Given Palantir's rapid growth trajectory, commonly used valuation metrics like price-to-earnings and price-to-sales ratios fall short as gauges of its stock. However, applying the more appropriate forward price/earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio -- which considers Palantir's robust growth rate -- provides a multiple of 0.61. Generally speaking, the experts view any positive PEG ratio below 1 as signifying an undervalued stock.
For price-sensitive investors concerned about its current level, it might be worth buying Palantir using a dollar-cost averaging strategy -- investing set amounts in the stock at regular intervals, regardless of what the price is doing at those times. Or, one could wait and hope the stock dips.
That said, given the company's accelerating growth and the magnitude of the opportunity, I believe Palantir is a buy.
