Pilgrim's Pride Delivers 12% EBITDA Margin in Q1: Can it Last?

Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. CALM delivered a standout performance in the third quarter of fiscal 2025, with gross profit surging more than threefold year over year to $716 million. This translated to a gross margin of 50.5%, representing a 1,940-basis point expansion driven by higher egg prices and volumes, alongside notably lower feed ingredient costs—primarily corn and soybean meal.
Farm production costs per dozen were 5.7% lower year over year, due to more favorable commodity pricing for key feed ingredients. Feed costs per dozen were down 9.6% year over year, mainly owing to lower prices for soybean meal.
Cal-Maine Foods has been rising sequentially in all three quarters of fiscal 2025, ranging from 31% in the first quarter to the latest 50.5% in the third quarter of fiscal 2025. In addition to higher egg prices due to the impact of avian flu, the upside is also being driven by lower feed costs. Notably, feed costs, which had peaked in the second quarter of fiscal 2023, have shown signs of easing since supporting margin expansion.
Recently, soybean futures climbed above $10.65 per bushel, hitting a three-week high after the Trump administration proposed biofuel blending requirements. Meanwhile, corn futures have slipped toward $4.30 per bushel, nearing a six-month low amid oversupply and subdued seasonal demand. Corn prices are down 3.55% year over year. This trend is expected to favor Cal-Maine Foods’ gross margin performance even if egg prices subside from recent highs as avian risks diminish.
Additionally, Cal-Maine Foods has taken strategic steps to further reduce production costs. The company acquired the feed mills (among other assets) of ISE America last year. In February 2025, it acquired storage facilities, usable grain, vehicles, related equipment and the retail feed sales business of Deal-Rite Feeds, Inc. With this move, the company can internally produce and transport feed more efficiently, reducing both costs and logistical complexity.

However, weakness in the Industrial Automation segment, due to lower demand for smart energy and thermal solutions, is worrisome. The weakened demand for personal protective equipment within the sensing and safety technologies business is also concerning. Foreign currency translation remains an overhang.

The company aspires to grow on the back of its three-tier business strategy and use its transformation initiatives to innovate and expand margins. Acquisitions have been pivotal in ADP’s ability to operate across borders.
Automatic Data Processing pursues buyouts that complement the overall business mix. This stock is an eye candy for dividend-seeking investors. The recent rise in the current ratio suggests a robust liquidity position for the company. Meanwhile, rising expenses due to acquisitions and investments are worrisome and can affect profitability.

The First Trust Consumer Staples AlphaDEX ETF (FXG) was launched on 05/08/2007, and is a smart beta exchange traded fund designed to offer broad exposure to the Consumer Staples ETFs category of the market.
What Are Smart Beta ETFs?
The ETF industry has long been dominated by products based on market cap weighted indexes, a strategy created to reflect the market or a particular market segment.
Market cap weighted indexes work great for investors who believe in market efficiency. They provide a low-cost, convenient and transparent way of replicating market returns.
But, there are some investors who would rather invest in smart beta funds; these funds track non-cap weighted strategies, and are a strong option for those who prefer choosing great stocks in order to beat the market.
By attempting to pick stocks that have a better chance of risk-return performance, non-cap weighted indexes are based on certain fundamental characteristics, or a combination of such.
The smart beta space gives investors many different choices, from equal-weighting, one of the simplest strategies, to more complicated ones like fundamental and volatility/momentum based weighting. However, not all of these methodologies have been able to deliver remarkable returns.

The fund is sponsored by First Trust Advisors. It has amassed assets over $284.06 million, making it one of the average sized ETFs in the Consumer Staples ETFs. This particular fund, before fees and expenses, seeks to match the performance of the StrataQuant Consumer Staples Index.
The StrataQuant Consumer Staples Index is a modified equal-dollar weighted index designed by the AMEX to objectively identify and select stocks from the Russell 1000 Index that may generate positive alpha relative to traditional passive style indices through the use of the AlphaDEX screening methodology.

Also, the company’s earnings surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. PPC benefited from its portfolio diversification strategies, operational excellence, branded offerings and key customer partnerships.
PPC’s Q1 Results in Detail
Pilgrim's Pride reported adjusted earnings of $1.31 per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.26. Also, the figure increased from adjusted earnings of 77 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. On a GAAP basis, earnings were $1.24 per share, up from 73 cents in the year-ago period. The producer, marketer and distributor of fresh, frozen and value-added chicken and pork products generated net sales of $4,463 million, which increased 2.3% from the year-ago quarter.
Pilgrim's Pride’s cost of sales was $3,908.1 million, which decreased from $3,978 million reported in the year-ago quarter. Gross profit jumped year over year to $554.9 million from $383.9 million.
The company reported an adjusted EBITDA of $533.2 million, up from $371.9 million in the year-ago quarter. The adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 350 bps year over year to 12% in the quarter under review.
The operating income was $404.5 million, a year-over-year increase from $250.3 million.
PPC’s Segment Analysis
Net sales in the U.S. operations were $2,743.2 million, up from $2,579.3 million in the year-ago quarter. Management noted year-over-year gains in both sales and profitability. The U.S. Fresh segment benefited from continued seasonal strength in commodity prices and enhanced production efficiencies, particularly in Big Bird.
Meanwhile, Case Ready and Small Bird segments saw volume growth driven by expanded distribution with key customers across retail, deli and quick-service restaurants. The Prepared Foods segment accelerated its expansion of value-added products across both retail and foodservice channels.
Net sales from Europe operations declined to $1,231.5 million in the quarter under review from $1,267.9 million in the prior year. However, the region continues to show positive momentum, supported by ongoing optimization, new product development and branded portfolio growth. Europe achieved an adjusted EBITDA margin milestone of 8.1% for the quarter, an improvement of more than 150 basis points year over year. Overall demand remained stable as the portfolio continued shifting toward an enhanced mix. Notably, branded offerings showed strong momentum, with Richmond and Fridge Raiders volumes outpacing category growth.
Mexico operations generated net sales of $488.3 million in the reported quarter, down from $514.7 million in the prior-year quarter. Despite the decline, the region improved profitability through stronger partnerships with key customers in Fresh, favorable commodity pricing and growth in value-added offerings across both retail and foodservice. Expansion efforts in live operations and Prepared Foods are progressing as planned, with all key projects on schedule.
PPC’s Financial Health Snapshot
The company ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $2,066.8 million, long-term debt (less current maturities) of $3,199.7 million and total shareholders’ equity of $3,147.4 million. The company provided $126.9 million in cash from operating activities for the three months ended March 30, 2025.
