Following completion, FirstBank will merge into PNC Bank, N.A., and its branches will be rebranded under the PNC Bank name once customer accounts transition to PNC’s platform. Further, the company has committed to retaining all FirstBank branches and frontline employees, ensuring seamless service for customers and communities.
Rationale Behind PNC-FirstBank’s Deal
Over the past decade, PNC Financial has consistently delivered double-digit revenue growth in new and acquired markets, supported by investments in technology, marketing and branch expansion. The deal with FirstBank aligns with PNC’s broader strategy of scaling its franchise through organic growth and strategic acquisition.
With this acquisition, PNC will more than triple its Colorado branch footprint to 120, making Denver one of its largest markets for commercial and business banking. PNC will become the leading bank in Denver by retail deposit share (20%) and branch share (14%).
The deal also expands PNC’s presence in Arizona, bringing its network to more than 70 branches with the addition of 13 FirstBank branches. Leveraging FirstBanks’ strong local customer relationships, PNC plans to further grow its corporate and private banking business in both Colorado and Arizona.

PNC to Acquire FirstBank in $4.1B Deal, Expand in Colorado & Arizona

Investors eyeing a purchase of PNC Financial Services Group (Symbol: PNC) stock, but cautious about paying the going market price of $194.18/share, might benefit from considering selling puts among the alternative strategies at their disposal. One interesting put contract in particular, is the January 2027 put at the $105 strike, which has a bid at the time of this writing of $2.10. Collecting that bid as the premium represents a 2% return against the $105 commitment, or a 1.4% annualized rate of return (at Stock Options Channel we call this the YieldBoost).
Selling a put does not give an investor access to PNC's upside potential the way owning shares would, because the put seller only ends up owning shares in the scenario where the contract is exercised. And the person on the other side of the contract would only benefit from exercising at the $105 strike if doing so produced a better outcome than selling at the going market price. So unless PNC Financial Services Group sees its shares fall 46% and the contract is exercised (resulting in a cost basis of $102.90 per share before broker commissions, subtracting the $2.10 from $105), the only upside to the put seller is from collecting that premium for the 1.4% annualized rate of return.

Truist's Path to Long-Term Growth: Branching Out and Going Digital

Truist Financial TFC, one of the largest regional banks in the United States, is witnessing steady loan growth. As of June 30, 2025, the lender had $312.6 billion in average loans and leases held for investment, a rise of 2% on a year-over-year basis.
As the average loan balance improved, it led to higher average earning assets for TFC in the first six months of 2025. Though the yield on the average total loan portfolio of 5.99% declined 42 basis points (bps) from the prior-year period following interest rate cuts in the latter part of 2024, this was more than offset by lower average cost of interest-bearing deposits (down 37 bps) and average cost of short-term borrowings (down 112 bps).
As such, Truist’s net interest income (NII) of $7.09 billion in the first half of 2025 witnessed 3% year-over-year growth. Likewise, net interest margin improved 7 bps to 3.02%.
Management is optimistic about the NII growth trajectory in 2025. The company expects NII to increase approximately 3% this year on the assumptions of low single-digit average loan growth and reductions in the Fed funds rate later in the year. Also, Truist plans to reprice roughly $27 billion of fixed-rate loans and investment securities in the second half of 2025, with new fixed-rate loans likely to have a run-on rate around 7% compared with a current run-off rate of nearly 6.4%.
Hence, Truist expects modest loan growth, favorable loan repricing and strategic balance sheet management to offset Fed rate cuts, with higher loan yields and extra revenue days boosting NII in 2025. We expect NII to grow 2.8%, 3.1% and 4.5% in 2025, 2026 and 2027, respectively. Our estimates for total loans indicate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.8% 2027. Further, in 2025, 2026 and 2027, we project NIM to be 3.05%, 3.14% and 3.25%, respectively.
How are Truist’s Peers Faring in Terms of Loan Growth & NII?
PNC Financial PNC benefits from a decent lending scenario. Total loans have witnessed a five-year (2019-2024) CAGR of 5.6%, with momentum continuing in the first half of 2025. The expectation of interest rate cuts in 2025 is likely to influence loan demand positively in the forthcoming period.
Driven by decent loan growth, PNC Financial’s NII witnessed a five-year (ended 2024) CAGR of 6.3%, with a rising trend continuing in the first six months of 2025. Loan repricing, modest loan growth and stabilizing funding costs are expected to boost PNC Financial’s NII in 2025, with management projecting a 7% rise in the same this year.
U.S. Bancorp USB has experienced strong growth in total loans during the past few years as it continued to expand and deepen relationships with current customers and acquire new customers and market share. The company’s total loans recorded a five-year (2019-2024) CAGR of 5.1%, with the trend continuing in the first six months of 2025. Going forward, the strengthening of loan pipelines in the commercial and credit card space is likely to drive loan growth.
On the back of loan growth, U.S. Bancorp’s NII witnessed a five-year CAGR of 4.4% through 2019-2024, with a rising trend continuing in the first half of 2025. Investment portfolio repositioning, stabilizing funding costs and less deposit migration will drive U.S. Bancorp’s NII expansion in the quarters ahead.

Loan Growth Boosts Truist's NII in 1H25: Is the Upside Sustainable?

Virtus Investment Partners VRTS announced an annual hike in its quarterly dividend for the eighth consecutive year. The company declared a quarterly cash dividend of $2.40 per share, indicating a nearly 6.7% rise from the prior payout. The dividend will be paid out on Nov. 14, 2025, to its shareholders of record as of Oct. 31.
Prior to this, in August 2024, VRTS raised its dividend by 18% to $2.25 per share. The company has increased its dividend payout six times in the past five years. Considering the closing price of $194.09 on Friday, its current dividend yield is 4.64% compared with the industry’s average of 2.04%.

Currently, the company’s payout ratio is 34% of its earnings. This indicates that it retains adequate earnings for reinvestment and future growth initiatives, supported by a disciplined capital strategy that continues to deliver lucrative returns to its shareholders.

Virtus Investment Rewards Shareholders With a 6.7% Dividend Hike

A month has gone by since the last earnings report for The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc (PNC). Shares have lost about 0.7% in that time frame, underperforming the S&P 500.

Non-interest income slightly decreased year over year to $2.1 billion. The decrease was driven by lower residential and commercial mortgage income, along with a decline in other non-interest income.
Non-interest expenses totaled $3.38 billion, which rose marginally from the year-ago figure.
The efficiency ratio was 60% compared with 62% in the year-ago quarter. A fall in the efficiency ratio reflects increased profitability.
Loan and Deposit Balance Rises
As of June 30, 2025, total loans were $326.3 billion, which increased 2.3% on a sequential basis. Further, total deposits increased by nearly 1% from the end of the previous quarter to $426.7 billion.
Credit Quality: Mixed Bag
Non-performing loans fell 15.8% year over year to $2.1 billion. Further, net loan charge-offs were $198 million, which declined 24.4% year over year.
The company reported a provision for credit losses of $254 million in the second quarter, which surged 8.1% from the year-earlier quarter.
The allowance for credit losses decreased 1.3% to $5.3 billion.
Capital Position & Profitability Ratios Improve
As of June 30, 2025, the Basel III common equity tier 1 capital ratio was 10.5% compared with 10.2% as of June 30, 2024.
Return on average assets and average common shareholders’ equity were 1.17% and 12.20%, respectively, compared with 1.05% and 12.16% witnessed in the prior-year quarter.

The PNC Financial Services Group (PNC) Down 0.7% Since Last Earnings Report: Can It Rebound?

On Comerica Incorporated’s CMA second-quarter 2025earnings call two experienced sell-side research analysts — David George and Mike Mayo — questioned the company regarding its historical underperformance and whether Comerica would sell itself. In response to this, CEO Curtis Farmer hinted at the bank’s openness to mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

Its efficiency ratio has increased from 54% in 2018 to 71% in 2024. The rise in the efficiency ratio indicates deteriorating profitability.
